Secret Garden to be made into manhwa and novel

Can’t get enough of the wacky romantic comedy Secret Garden? Thanks to the popularity of the drama series, the story will be adapted for several additional formats: a novel, a photo comic book, and a soonjung manhwa (aka shojo manga, or romance-themed comic book).

The novel will be written by a new writer, Kang Yi-eul, and will include many of the drama’s most recognizable bits of dialogue as written by scriptwriter Kim Eun-sook. An example: “Is this your best? Are you sure?” which is the icy comment Joo-won always levels at his staff, which intimidates them and asserts his position as alpha dog. As though his position as CEO and his general hauteur weren’t enough to cow them into submission.

In the photo comic book, memorable scenes will be captured in stills and arranged, comic book style, to tell a story. Since all of its material will be taken from the drama proper, the story won’t be new, so I suppose it works more as a collector’s item for drama fans. It’ll be published in two volumes. The actual (soonjung) comic book, in contrast, will diverge from the drama’s established storyline to include new plotlines for the characters.

Hmm, it’s good for the drama producers, but I’m not sure how compelling this franchise will be without the crackling onscreen chemistry between Hyun Bin and Ha Ji-won (and the childish rivalry between Hyun Bin and Yoon Sang-hyun). At least readers will have their portrayals in mind when reading the new material, which should help.

The novel became available for preorders this week, and preorders open up for the first of the two photo books next week. The manhwa collection plans to go up for preorders in January.

Not so much for me. If it doesn't have KSH, and if it's not Bin-bin or Key Lime, than I don't find it that appealing.

“Is this your best? Are you sure?”--> scariest question ever. You can't win! If you say "no", you're screwed. If you say "yes" and he doesn't like it, then you're screwed.

I agree that without the chemistry between Ha Ji Won and Hyun Bin, it's not as interesting. I don't think anyone but Hyun Bin could have played this role. He can be a complete dick and steal candy from little babies and we'd still forgive him. No wonder Ra-Im is so conflicted. I almost hate myself for not hating him completely.

I wish I knew how to read korean- would totally go for the novel. Not sure abt the manhwa. I usually love manhwa, but I don't want them to mess with the story.

“Is this your best? Are you sure?”

I wonder if the top honcho had asked the marketing/production team this question when they were presented the idea of the photobook, comics, etc. :D

Yeah, I think being able to picture the SG cast in our minds will make reading the novel much more enjoyable. For fun, might even play the OST in the background as I read key scenes.

Thanks to you, JB, I now have a new word in my lexicon: hauteur. I love that you are both erudite and down-to-earth.

Oh and about the novel etc. I would have been more interested in reading them if they had preceded the drama.

For me it's Hyun Bin, Ha Ji Won and the other cast members who make the script so special. Without these actors' body language and line delivery I don't think there would be the same dramatic impact.

For Coffee Prince the novel was interesting as there were differences to the drama and I appreciated that the drama was based on it. It's where the drama originated and I appreciated that.

Then this would probably be the time to take out that Korean 101 book I've been hiding in my drawer. Ahem: "chogiyo Hyun Bin oppa, domo domo choaheyo!" *insert Miho's famous hand gun* Hehe. I wanted to say more but my book is so limited with words. Darn rip off.

Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that SG would warrant a manhwa and novel.

For a "romantic comedy" there certainly isn't much comedy (yeah, there were a few amusing moments w/ the "change", but that's about it), nor romance worth caring about (all those moments where you are supposed to feel something - absolutely nothing for me).

Most of the characters are annoying/have little appeal and the dialogue and plot/romance lines are just horrible.

This seems to be one of the dramas where the casting (well, of the 2 leads) has made it more successful than what is warranted, not that the 2 leads have that much chemistry btwn them.

MGIAG had a lot more chemistry btwn the 2 leads and Coffee House had much funnier comedy bits, as well as dialogue; SG, otoh, may very well be the worst drama I have seen this year (unless things change for the better soon).

i dunno about that......i love the drama, and while i go for the whole movie-then book, i'm not sure it would work out backwards....

and i also have a plea for anyone who is a soundtrack or instrumental connoiseour or else saw fugitive plan b.
in fugitive: plan b ep 10 part 3, when mijin is going to kill rain, jini, and detective an arabic instrumental piece plays. it plays throughout the drama whenever the baddies are plotting evil deeds (charman yang plotting, kai threatening him, etc etc.), but it isn't on the soundtrack!!!! if anyone know the name or where i can dowload from, simply reply!!! thanks!!!

I'm enjoying this drama but I think that aside from HJW & HB there is a lot of bad acting/directing in this drama where the emotion from the manhwa might be more than expressed by certain actors. Joo Won's mother for instance, what a caricature! Can't stand her, she'll probably be a better actress in manwha form. Can't stand Seul's constant crying scenes...The martial arts director is really wooden...he's definately what you call a block of wood

Hyun Bin is really selling this though and of course Ha Ji Won. I don't even think they have this great chemistry together, it's just that they are both such charismatic and wonderful actors they are both so much fun to watch. Loved the whipped cream kiss. That was hot.

I agree that Hyun and Ha Ji Won has wonderful chemistry together and they really sell the drama but I have to disagree with you regarding the acting. I actually think that SG has one of the best cast and acting I've seen in a kdrama this year. In addition to the leads, I thought many of the supporting characters did very well too.

I think we all agree that Hyun Bin, Han Ji-won and Yoon Sang-hyun gave outstanding performances. Kim Sa-rang (Seul) may not match their standard yet but she didn't do badly either. I thought she handled the emotional scenes quite well. Philips Lee is a little stiff but his character was written as the quiet brooding type in the first place, at least I think he managed to bring across the character of a director who is stern on the outside but secretly cares for the female lead. Joo Won's mother IS written as a caricature but I thought she managed to display some deft comic timing in her scenes, making her character funnier than intended to be. Same goes for the manager who is eyeing Joo-won's position. Another outstanding actor is the guy who played Joo-won's assistant, he has few scenes but he is stealing every single one of them. Others like Ri-am's roommate and her sunbae at the action school, the talented singer who Oska is trying to sign etc handled themselves pretty well too. I can't really think of a single character in this who I think can really be called bad. Your sweeping criticism of the acting in this drama is a little harsh I feel.

I'm going to agree w/ jfc, tho I think the bad acting is more due to the actors having little to work w/ than their actual talents.

The dialogue is either boring/forgettable or downright predictable/lame (sometimes so bad that I find myself laughing).

I don't know what comic timing your talking about since there hasn't been much comedy (well, successful comedy at least).

As for Yoon Sang-hyun, it was bad casting - I simply don't buy him as a Hallyu star or as a player.

I don't mind buying the manhwa since there will be new stuff. For the photobook...hmm I would rather have dramabean's commentary then a repetition of what happened. The novel might be good though, since it would prolly have more info on what the characters are thinking...just in case I missed a slight look or gesture - translation will most prob not be available though....

The thing that would go a long way for the success of the manhwa and the photo comic book is strong characterization and crackling dialogue. I can't imagine the manhwa/photo comic book lasting long if it deviates from the main plot but...here's hoping.
