Trailer for comedic period mystery Joseon’s Great Detective
by | December 10, 2010 | 46 Comments

The character posters and trailer are out for Joseon’s Great Detective: Secret of the Wolfsbane, which looks like it could be a hoot. The film is highly stylized and peppered with action and comedy, which has me sitting up in interest — plus, it stars A-list leading man Kim Myung-min (Beethoven Virus, My Love By My Side). Always a good thing.

Kim plays the titular hero, the top detective of the Joseon era, who seems like a Sherlock Holmes-y type of character with his mix of bravado, confidence, and goofiness (though perhaps less depraved/tortured).

The normally sweet-faced, lively Han Ji-min (Cain & Abel, Yi San) is looking a lot bolder and darker for her role; she’s also wearing a lot of black and red, which is practically movie/drama code for “sly femme fatale.” We’ve already seen the first movie poster featuring Kim Myung-min, and here are the rest. Her poster bears the tagline, “What is it you wish to know?” That, coupled with the sly smiles and knowing glances in the trailer video, gives her an aura of mystery.

Here’s the video:

Meanwhile, Kim Myung-min’s poster reads, “Is there a case you’d like solved?” I can’t help myself from wanting to shave that silly mustache from his face, but I know it’s part of the package, giving him a goofy look to counter his character’s smarts. Still. It’s like a caterpillar died on his face. Shudder.

Last but not least, Oh Dal-soo plays the standard comic relief role as the sidekick, and his poster reads, “Do you have need of my help?”

Looks like a rollicking fun time, if you ask me. (Kim Myung-min doing comedy is not to be missed! Especially since we don’t know how long it’ll be before we can see his funny side again, especially if he continues to favor serious, weightier roles in the future, as he has been doing in the past few years.)

Joseon’s Great Detective: Secret of the Wolfsbane releases in theaters on January 27.

      • 1.1.1 koreandramalover/kdl

        LOL!!! ;)

        methinks its BOTH -

        the dog is GARGANTUAN!!!

        and

the man is already kind of short
but standing next to that GINORMOUS dog,
he looks positively DWARFED… hehe ;)

        • 1.1.1.1 lilymon

          LOL…I second that!

It’s a beautiful dog. Makes me want to go “mung mung”. XD Too bad I like animals but am too lazy to own a pet. X(

      • 1.2.1 joeydragonlady

love that dog…could be a photo effect but dang excellent photo!

    • 1.3 soysauce

WHOA, I just realized that. HUGE indeed. wth.

      • 1.3.1 Another Fan

And I just realized it looks like one of the dogs in “Das Feuerzeug”. Dont no if there is any translation into english of this fairytale but it’s a german one as far as I know. So this is one of the dogs that appears every time he tries to enkindle his lighter. If he tries it once their is a small dog, twice a huger one and the third time he tries a dog like this one up there appears. WOW. And what for? To grant him every whish he asks for. This last one actually kidnapped the princess (that the hero has fallen for) ON HIS BACK WHILE SHE’S STILL ASLEEP and brings her to the hero (who gets really in trouble because of that).

That is how huge he is. xD
So maybe this dog is the real sidekick?

    • 1.4 dzigh

      That’s my thoughts exactly!!

    • 1.5 danni

Lol, that’s exactly what I was thinking. I think it’s taller than me, which is a very scary thought.

    • 1.6 Ojou_Belle

I agree with the dog comment! Goodness!

That is one huge dog…it couldn’t possibly be true to

size is it? Unless it’s Jacob? Hahaha!

Anyway, hope the show goes well. We’ll have to watch

      and see!

      • 1.6.1 Casie J.

LMAO. That was my first thought when I saw a huge dog.

        “Jacob?! In Korea?!”

  2. minah

    Love love Kim Myung-min!! :D I wanna see this~

  3. w

I was just thinking that I need to get a dog that size too…It will my bodyguard!

  4. Ani

Man, I love his facial expression in the trailer at 0:23. Kim Myung-nim hwaiting. Ganbatte ne~

P.S. The trailer has a similar vibe with the Woo-Chi movie. I bet it’ll be effing AWESOME!!!

    • 4.1 lovepark

That’s what I thought, too. It reminded of Jeon Woochi especially around the end when Kim Myung-min was standing on the title and talking.

      • 4.1.1 asianromance

same here! first thought that came to mind from the first few seconds of the trailer was Jeon Woo-Chi. I can’t wait to see this! it sounds like it’s going to be hilarious!

  5. lovepark

Kim Myung-min… enough said. No, seriously, the man is fabulous. I’m so glad he’s getting so much recognition. The movie looks entertaining and great potential fun! Plus, there’s Oh Dal-soo who cracks me up.

  6. glacierkn

mmm hhmm…nice to see Han Ji Min again!

  7. huama

whoa, nearly couldn’t recognize han ji min!! glad she’s coming back!

  8. Christy

Awesome trailer. The visuals are both stunning and poetic.

  9. all4movies

Instead of dark and mysterious, it’s starting to look a lit like goofy and silly, with a dash of salt for good measure. A la Pink Panther?

    Looks scrumptious.

  10. 10 ikaw@ako

my first time seeing han ji min like this.
kim myung min, it’s been a while he did comedy, i like him both acting in comedy and melo or serious character, the man knows how to act.

  11. 11 mybus

KMM…do want! Caterpillar on his face won’t make him look any less charming. The trailer looks so beautiful, I’m gonna put this on my to-watch list :D

  12. 12 sunshine

I’m looking forward to this one. I think KMM and HJM are both incredibly talented, and a genre piece set in historical times (ex: Joseon X-Files) is totally my cup of tea.

  13. 13 danni

Whoa, I did not recognize Han Ji-min. I’ve only see her in Cain & Abel and she had a cutesy role there so it’s really weird to see her looking so sexy and dangerous.
Kim Myung-min’s mustache actually doesn’t bother me, maybe because I know it’s for comedic effect or just because it’s Kim Myung-min and he can do just about anything he wants.

  14. 14 Lenita

that is a huge…husky? a really handsome one at that.
contrary, i like the mustache on the man, it gives him that sparkling quality.
thanks for bringing this film to our attention, JB, would definitely look out for it…

  15. 15 cha

The movie looks fun, but I’ve promised to myself to keep my expectation low, so there will be no disappointment later..

    And I think I’m getting used to KMM’s mustache~ ^^

  16. 16 mimi

the dog is the most handsome!

  17. 17 choufy

Too bad, I thought it was a drama X3
I didn’t finish Joseon X-Files yet but I can feel already the withdrawal symptoms just around the corner… Several episodes with KMM’s crazy mustache would have been a blast lol
Anyway, for some reason this movie, visually, made me think about “The Accidental Gangster and the Mistaken Courtesan” movie (good for the eyes, not so good for the story), I will definitally check it ^^

  18. 18 Biscuit

The first thing that came to my mind was how the clothes are soooooooo pretty in the posters…. haaaaa. And I just want to cuddle that big fluffball!

Now seriously onto the trailer, I’m totally happy for comedic KMM and the trailer was hilarious to watch! I’m completely anticipating this movie with high hopes.

  19. 19 Vendetta

    LOL MOUSTACHE!<3
wow, looking forward to watching this.

  20. 20 jandoe

    ooooooo she is looking hot!

  21. 21 Anonymous

is the dog real? it is so big!

i didn’t recognize han ji min right away! she’s not her usual sweet self, she looks mysterious and sexy. love her transformation.

am not a fan of KMM’s acting – imo he overacts a lot.

  22. 22 come2noona

Looks awesome! There are quite a few Korean movies I’d like to see. Is there anywhere I can find movies subbed on line?

  23. 23 koreamom

this looks like all kinds of fun! really want to see it.

  24. 24 jen

Yess Han Ji Min’s baack baby!!! :) Always missed her after Cain and abel… Can’t wait for her drama

  25. 25 Anna

I love Han Ji Min and the trailer looks so fun. I hope it’d be a hit !!!

  26. 26 peanut butter

the mustache doesnt bother me too much since it adds to the comedic effect as far as character personality goes. the trailer i absolutely love! i will definitely watch this one!

  27. 27 Autumn

oh yes, more joseon goodness. looks like this is going to be so much fun. can’t wait.

  28. 28 Sup super supper

    Yay, Kim Myung Min, yay!!

  29. 29 prncssptri

Han Ji Min looks STUNNING!!!! wow, this looks funny and interesting XD

  30. 30 astoldbyannabanana

maybe it’s because I just watched Sherlocke Holmes again two days ago, but the soundtrack is awfully familiar esp. near the ending

  31. 31 js

    Han Ji-min!!!! <3

  32. 32 Kristal

I want to see this, another fan here of han ji min after watching Cain and Abel, I really want her to be one of the top actresses in Korea aside from of course being drop dead gorgeous!!!
