Hwang Jung-eum cast as lead in new drama

Rising actress Hwang Jung-eum (Giant, High Kick Through the Roof) has been cast in her first leading role in the upcoming MBC drama Do You Hear My Heart. It’s not surprising that she’ll be headlining her own drama, with all the praise from her role in last year’s epic Giant, which earned her a New Star Award from SBS.

There’s rampant speculation about her leading man co-star, from Hallyu stars to ‘flower pretty boys,’ but I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough who she’ll be sharing the screen with. Her character in the drama is described as a Candy-type (OF COURSE), who is cheery and strong.

The team leading the production will be PD Kim Sang-ho of Fantasy Couple and writer Moon Hee-jung of Smile, You. Both upbeat, cheery comedies, so we can expect a similar tone I’m sure. I confess I’ve never liked Fantasy Couple, which was super hammy, but I’m in an optimistic mood, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a good springtime comedy.

It's slated to follow Flames of Desire on Sat/Sun MBC slot.

Likely a thirty ep drama or there abouts in length.

I'm wondering why the male lead it. For some reason I keep thinking it'll be Kim Bum. Esp after the got the matching Barbie and Ken awards last month from Mattel.

Also, out of the three musketeers, JIW has 49 Days in March, which is followed by LMH in City Hunter in May. Only KB needs a drama porject. This sounds perfect for him.

If KB is the male lead I'm not watching, sorry Miju! I love ya and all but have an allergy to that guy for some reason.

Is it bad that I wouldn't want that? If she's a Candy type then SJK'd probably be a Darcy type which in my opinion doesn't suit him at all. I'd rather he took on a drama with slightly quirkier leading role, kinda like Gong Yoo's character from Finding Kim Jong-wook.

Song Joongki? Hmm, I hate to say it, but even tho they're of same age, he's gonna look like her kid brother. Someone older would be more believable, I think.

I really enjoyed her character in high kick and giant, i'll be looking forward to this. She's really on the rise, i used to be only neutral about her in variety shows she used to participate in but she's the type to grow on you.

Wish her luck, i'll have to read the sypnosis first before deciding whether i'll watch it or not.

Good luck but i still doubt regarding her acting , in Giant her acting is weak , the romance seems touching due to acting skill of a actor pairing with her not her, she ruined so many romantic moments , her crying is lack of sincerity .
Fr me K actors are more talented than K actresses .

I'm with you there. Her acting was weak but the other actors made up for it.
I hope they'll find a strong leading man to carry her :p.

I agree with you there. Her acting was the weakest. Luckily for her in Giant, the rest of the cast were awesome. She is pretty, but then there are lots of pretty K actresses.

Wow! On the contrary I think she was a pretty strong actress. She could light up the screen with her presence, she sang quite well and she maintained the same endearing qualities of Park Ha-young's little Mi-joo, had great chemistry with anyone and everyone around her. Where she struggled was her speech impediment. Bless.

In terms of letdowns, it was Park Jin-hee for me. Nam Ji-hyun ALWAYS sets the bar impossibly high for the actresses that replace her and PJH so clearly struggled to live up to the challenge in the first half of the series. I just don't think she was ready for such a tremendous role. But I still adore the actress.

And saying that, ehh, not too excited about this drama.

I liked Hwang Jung Eum in High Kick though the roof, well at least up until the 120th episode, then I figured they ran out of plot and couldn't figure out what to do.

I look forward to her in a new upbeat drama

I would have understand if you said that you droped a romantic comedy or a melodrama because of someone's voice .
But when it comes to a drama of giant's calibre, dropping it because of someone's voice is totally unacceptable >:).
Give the drama a second chance ,it's one of the best dramas ever made if not the best.
Maybe you droped it not because of miju's voice, but because you don't like politics and you find the drama boring!?that's another story :D

i can't help but say that i would probably be avoiding her drama. the 'candy' factor, acted by her, is going a little too overboard for me.

Wow there seems to be mostly negativeness regarding her and her acting. Is she that bad---worth not even giving her another chance? I'm just curious :S

i am very wary of candy-type heroines, they tend to get unbearably annoying. i haven't seen HJE in any dramas yet, but thought she was bubbly and fun in Love Letter, so she might do well here.

I remembered her in "love letter days". Looks like she had gone under the knife since then because she looks so different now and not as flat chested as before.

Honestly, she got recognized because of her drunk scenes in High Kick. Which i think is not a role to do. But she has stuck in this industry long enough and i quess it's about time she comes afloat. Though her acting skills are still limited and still a long way to the top.
