Secret Garden gets a special broadcast
by | January 14, 2011 | 110 Comments

Secret Garden ends its 20-episode run this weekend, but it’ll have another week on the broadcast schedule, as it has announced a special to air the following week.

It’ll be a standard special, with a highlight reel, behind-the-scenes tidbits, and NG clips, and has a 70-minute running time. As the cast is still busily shooting the finale (eep), it’s not yet known which of the actors will be available to participate, but I suspect that if the main actors aren’t present there’ll be a fan uproar; Secret Garden isn’t Secret Garden without Hyun Bin. (I’d go so far as to say the drama would’ve tired a lot sooner without him.)

This appears to be a way to pad out the schedule with the Asia Cup taking place that weekend. The special broadcast is currently scheduled to air on Saturday, January 22, but should the Korean team win the group stage and advance to the quarterfinals, they’ll play that night and the Secret Garden broadcast will be pushed to Sunday.

The drama to follow, New Gisaeng Story, was originally scheduled to premiere on the 22nd. However, it is now scheduled to air its first two episodes on the 23rd, unless an Asia Cup win pushes that to the following week.

Also secret garden isn’t secret garden without Ha Jin Won ^^

    • 1.1 Nana

Secret garden will be my last drama to watch .. so secret garden’s specials would be a really special ending :) :)

      • 1.1.1 Elle-Emme

        why?

        • 1.1.1.1 Nana

because although watching dramas is a great pleasure, however it is not adding to my life or the lives of other people around me anything so it’s a big waste of time especially when it turns into addiction. I’d rather get this pleasure from spending more quality time with my family and friends. it’s just my opinion ^^ so no more dramas for me but i’m happy to make this decision :) and I am happy to end it with Secret Garden’s specials :D

          • 1.1.1.1.1 soysauce

haha, running away from dramas before it’s too late? Well, this will be my last until spring break or probably summer. School just started and let’s just say that boy am I glad Secret Garden’s ending this weekend, or else it would’ve made quite a dent in my school grades.

AND YAYY!!!!! This should make the withdrawal easier to deal with right? All Gardeners rejoice!

          • 1.1.1.1.2 carshii

i agree!!! but ive tried giving up dramas dozens of times already but failed each time… so good luck!!!

stay strong~~~ and resist drama temptations hehe

          • 1.1.1.1.3 Nana

@carshii I think it’ll be easier for me since it hasn’t been long when I started watching k-dramas and usually once I make a decision I stick to it tell the end ^^

          • 1.1.1.1.4 teapot

I’d suggest we start a kdrama recovery support group, but lets face it – we’d all just start talking about more dramas! Lol.
@Nana – you picked a great one to end on! Have fun with fam and friends:)

          • 1.1.1.1.5 kpopfan

            HI Nana,
I think you are right. It does get addicting. I’ve been trying to detox from K dramas as well. but it’s so hard !!!! I actually never ever watched K dramas until I gave birth to my firstborn and I was stuck at home with my mother who brought over those darn video tapes…. it was the beginning of the end.
            But good for you.

          • 1.1.1.1.6 Phisky

SG is the last one for me too mainly for the same reasons plus focusing on job hunting.

          • 1.1.1.1.7 Vendetta

This is a good discussion, it makes me feel maybe I should give up dramas too, it is true that they take up a lot of time. I have been giving so much of my time up for dramas when I was suppose to be working on college projects. :( I guess as much as this addiction entertains me it also leaves me feeling guilty.

To be brutally honest, its like “lol you’re wasting your time on random dramas while there are people out there being creative, working and producing things for their future and not wasting a minute of their life”

yeah, sometimes when I think about it, most dramas have the same cliche theme of female and male leads ending up falling for eachother and blablahblah.
But as an addict I defend that by pointing out “enjoying the characters stories and journeys, how they overcome obstacles lalala”.

In the end I don’t know what to do XDDD! omg help!

          • 1.1.1.1.8 cyphherr

I have watched kdramas for years but I think addiction has stages .. I used to really watch them straight for hours but now I learned to set aside time to watch and do other things .. It’s like watching TV or going to movies we need not do it 24/7 hehe.. To think I’m working in a hospital, kdramas for me is a breath of fresh air when I feel burnt out hehehe…

          • 1.1.1.1.9 Sasorisa

Good for you! I think I used to be totally addicted (tho it spanned through Manga, Anime, J-Dramas and K-Dramas) – but unlike the other poster – after my firstborn really NO time at all! But the best thing EVER is my commute to work – I get to watch all I want and it won’t interfere with my life!

          • 1.1.1.1.10 Aerisama

KUKUKU And the numbers keep going up! I had the same issue a year ago [when I started to watch Kdramas] because I stayed up all night just to sleep at classes or leaving undone paperwork and essays behind. Even so here I am with good grades at University, a job and still watching dramas KEKEKE

The key is an schedule and the will to stick to it, I have my own leisure time free of guilty [paperwork, chores and homeworks done] to watch Kdrama :D

          • 1.1.1.1.11 Lenita

as with any hobby, i think moderation is key. but once addicted, they say going without cold turkey is the best way forward.

actually reading recaps is a good alternative for me, i can keep the thirst at bay but still enjoy some drama. then i just marathon a drama over some weekend or long break. no drama-watching during the weekdays.

      • 1.1.2 dami

        why?
        drama’s rock, i love them

        • 1.1.2.1 jann

I couldn’t quit coz dramas are special to me, but i’ve learned to control…just one episode and one drama at a time, and if i have other plans…the drama has to wait. it’s a win-win situation!

          • 1.1.2.1.1 Lilian

yeah..it’s ok if in moderation. Just don’t let it prevent you from meeting friends and spending time with family =)

      • 1.1.3 Vendetta

yeah, so in the end it all comes down to moderation and self control XD lol

        • 1.1.3.1 girlatsea

Definitely. I was totally addicted when I first started (August 2010) but I think over time life started to get in the way. College, my social life, k-pop (LOL, that’s another story). But I’m pretty good with self-control these days. It’s been about two months since I marathoned anything. Actually I hadn’t really been watching any dramas until My Princess and Dream High premiered (I gave up on Secret Garden on around episode 8.)

I think it’s really hard to managed your time in general (I’m in college right now & I’m about 100% sure I have ADD.) There’s school, work, family… I’m fortunate enough that the height my addiction was never during an actual semester of college (I took a semester hiatus) but I think I’ll be able to handle it well because I’ve started to treat these dramas as treats kind of like I treat myself with movies and so on (friends, partying LOL.) I’ve been saving it for the weekend or for my special chillin/alone time.

@Nana Maybe you could do the same? Giving up something you enjoy just seems a little harsh to me.

      • 1.1.4 Sooshi Meo

Uh, that’s a “good” decision but I think you’re in denial. I grew up watching dramas at the age of 2. Monkey King was the first drama I ever watched in Vietnam, I’d wait for it every morning and that was when it was dubbed in ONE voice. Anyway, its become such a big thing now (Viet dubbed, English subtitles and many other languages and its not exclusive to Asians only) but as an Asian I feel like it is a part of our culture to watch dramas. I watch dramas everyday and I’m proud to have a big list but don’t think that just because I watch dramas that I don’t have a life outside of my addiction. If I love something enough I’ll make time for it. :) I’m never giving up dramas and I’m very picky about them. I don’t watch every single one that comes out but when a good one comes along I’ll make sure to watch it to the end and with its specials, ngs, etc. You just have to learn how to manage your time. Good luck with trying but I’m sure I’ll see you around here soon. Haha. :P

      • 1.1.5 goldlilys

Like in any cases of addiction, learn to do it in MODERATION. Balance your time with work/school, family, friends, and entertainment (which is dramaland in your case).

I’m still really obsessed with Asian dramas and movies, but not so much animes now (can’t find good ones). Yet I still have to focus on what’s really important. Family, Work, Friends, then addiction. CONTROL your addiction, do not let it control you.

And really good luck giving up watching dramas. That will be hard especially when you randomly spot a good summary of one on the net, and you wonder hmm just one episode then delete it … 16 episodes later, ah crap I watched another drama full. LOL

    • 1.2 sean

      agree!

    • 1.3 milan1010

      thank you for that….

no other female actress can pull this role the way she did….

      • 1.3.1 jann

i’ve never been impressed with ha ji won before, but now i’m sure that no other female actress or just a pretty face would’ve been a better Ra Im!! Love their pairing…it’s spot on!!

    • 1.4 beng

      Agree!

And thank God it’s Saturday already, can’t wait for Episode 19…

    • 1.5 libran

  2. rich

OMG… time runs by very fast. It’s time to say goodbye to SG… :( I’m going to miss them! T.T

    • 2.1 ilikehim

Definitely, everyone will be suffering frm withdrawal..meanwhile, ANYTHING that extends SG’s life is good news…like this special…

  3. questions987

And the viki mod in me is screaming. NOOOOOO while the fan girl is screaming Yesssss!

    • 3.1 otk

      LOL LOL

You guys HAVE to get this subbed!

      • 3.1.1 Lenita

Yes yes yes please please please sub it!:D

      • 3.1.2 questions987

Coco already announced it on viki. We will do the special – no promises on subbers being willing to sub it but the channel manager/mods/seggers will upload and seg the videos and pray that subbers will sub it.

Please keep in mind that subbing specials is a lot harder than subbing an episode.

::now back to work – CK the slave driver is stalking me again::

        • 3.1.2.1 Lenita

sounds good, at least we can watch it too, thanks!

        • 3.1.2.2 ck1Oz

Oh hey I was editing all day.I was on a JB break when I saw your post :-) You just happened to be conveniently fangirling ^^

Man all those new Mon-Thurs dramas.I will be glad for a Sat-Sun break.

    • 3.2 ck1Oz

LOL.Annyeong, your ‘slave driver’ here.Nope you can’t escape me ‘evil laugh’ Work and more work for you woman!

My inner fangirl is doing a HJW sword dance in the snow :-)

  4. otk

YES..I love me some bloopers…. the episode where they showed some….those ones weren’t funny :/

Does anyone actually know the storyline of “New tales of the Gisaeng”

I’ve been searching for weeks and never get anything other than cast and writer/PD.

    • 4.1 Okie Dokie

I would love to see the NGs. Hopefully, they’ll revolve around the soul-switching antics. That’d be so fun.

This is the link to the sbs website. Someone who translates better than me can look. But for now…

Gisaeng disappeared at the end of the Joseon period, with the breakdown of the social system and the Japanese occupation.

The drama attempts to imagine what would have happened if they had not disappeared, and were still around today. That’s why they’re called “new” gisaeng stories.

The ladies of the gisaeng house entertain the VVIPs in modern day Korea.

padding out for the broadcast station/
futile means to ease me into a Secret Garden-less life

    poytahtoh-tomaytoh.

  6. Lacey

Yay a special! i hope someone subs it!

  7. otk

This might appear very shallow or groundless but,
if Hyun Bin wasn’t in SG and Jang Hyuk was instead….
I don’t think I’d watch it…I don’t think JH would’ve been able to act like HB does…and JH looks a bit more ‘non refined’ :/

    • 7.1 gea

i love Jang Hyuk, but gotta agree on that. Jang Hyuk doesn’t have that refined aura Hyun Bin has. Maybe watching Jang Hyuk all scruffy in Chuno makes me think that… Hyun Bin made Kim Joo Won’s character awesome!

      • 7.1.1 adj

i second that. JH is my top favorite Korean actor, as for JW’s role, Hyun Bin is the best.

        • 7.1.1.1 Free

          i third that !

        • 7.1.1.2 Moozy

I fourth that. Ep 19 Hyun Bin oudone himself. Even for myself who can ick up one or 2 korean cried!! Kudos SG!! Will miss u once it ends tomorrow nite..

  8. Omega

    @otk I am with you

  9. Jomo

I was hoping they were going to do this.
Now I have next Saturday to look forward to, too.

  10. 10 Viv

I hope they show us NG and BTS of all the kiss scenes. The party kiss BTS was the best so far. If I didn’t know any better, I would think there is ‘something’ going on between HB and HJW. Off screen chemistry is just as explosive as their on screen chemistry.

    • 10.1 Lenita

where did you see the party scene bts? link please?

this is why i love dramabeans, people actually reads the comments and reply! kamsamnida!

        • 10.1.1.4 Moozy

Thank you!!!!! Sizzling scene. Hardworking casts. Sad to saw farewell tomorrow.

  11. 11 Thorpey

Can’t wait for this broadcast. Hope the DVD they’ll be releasing will include this goodies. Secret Garden should end with a BANG!

  12. 12 VanillaSalt

umm hate to sound kinda dumb, but what does NG stand for?

    • 12.1 Viv

I believe it means ‘not good’, a term for bloopers. Scenes that director shouted ‘CUT, do it again’.

    • 12.2 Lenita

yup, ‘no good’ as in no-good scenes (bloopers)

  13. 13 Lenita

oh i hope someone subs this!

i haven’t started watching SG cause i don’t like the weekly waits, so imma marathon it. so probly am in minority here cause i’m glad it’s ending. soon i can find the vids and finally start watching whole episode! *squeals*

  14. 14 Twilight

As much as Hyun Bin’s character is being adored for his role as the neurotic Ji Woon, Secret Garden won’t be as successful without the great presence of Ha Ji Won.. I love her as Gil Ra Im – I don’t think any other actress can portray that role effectively. Also, the rest of the cast even the Oska and Seul story is cute and heartbreaking.

    • 14.1 Sukispop

Agreed. Ha Ji-won’s Raim was the perfect foible to Hyun Bin’s Joo-won, and together they made SG a very special drama. It would not have been the same at all, had either of their roles been portrayed by anyone else. I loved Hyun Bin’s performance…but, honestly, I watched SG because of Ha Ji-won.

The love story of Oska and Seul was also very compelling, and it made a great companion story to Joo-won and Ra-im’s amazing one. ;)

      • 14.1.1 Startulle

        u guys are so rite!!!!

  15. 15 WarlyGal

    That is so TRUE!!!!!!

  16. 16 rose

it so sad actually , for viki not allowing us in this region to watch any korean drama and other site have also other problems can anyone suggest a site where i can watch sg , dramacrazy have been acting lately i dont know if it a virus or something

  17. 17 charitee

because of the set-up of switching and blahblahblah, i am sure that SG will have some of the BEST NG CLIPS EVAR!

hahaha. i love this drama too much…

  18. 18 HalfALu

Holy Shnikeez! Thank you so much for that link!! *squee*

  19. 19 lala

    That’s awesome!

  20. 20 shizniz00

ahhh loving it!! sad that it’s ending…gonna be SG withdrawal.

  21. 21 Show2007

I love HJW as well. However, I agree that HB is the one who steal the show.

  22. 22 Diane

Yes!! :D I can’t wait..but where do you think I’ll be able to find it after it airs? I know kdrama won’t have it…viikii doesn’t show secret garden… help? :’(

    • 22.1 jfc

you can watch it on dramafever!

    • 22.2 ck1Oz

  23. 23 asianromance

As much as I’m going to miss Joo-won and Ra-Im, I’m really REALLY going to miss Secretary Kim! Love this guy and his whines of “sajang-niiiiim”.

    • 23.1 Laica

Me too! I love Secretary Kim. He’s adorable.

  24. 24 Francesca

I’m gonna miss SG for a long time :) Hyun Bin-Ha Ji Won are such a great actor/actress ^^

  25. 25 Stephanie

Only a few dramas make it into my fav list. This is one of them. This is also the first drama in the list that I’d attribute most of its success to one person – Hyun Bin. Coffee Prince, Dal Ja’s spring, World’s Within, etc depended on the whole cast and crew to be a success. But this show really hung on the acting skills of Hyun Bin. I mean, I love the directing and the writing but without Hyun Bin’s execution, it would have failed so so so very badly.

    • 25.1 Free

      totally agree !

    • 25.2 libran

how can a drama attribute most of its success to just one person? credits also to Ha Ji Won, you did a great job, i never liked you before but because of Secret Garden, I immediately became a fan. And Hyun Bin, I super love you too!

  26. 26 chong

anyone has any idea how to stream it live tonight & tmr?

i don’t wanna use SBS’s web though. they need an account.

  27. 27 nomujoha

I LOVE THEM BOTH, ha ji won and hyun bin are making the drama perfect. love their chemistry. so cuteeeee. i wish they would just date…sorry hye gyo unnie, but i’m RaIm-JooWoon shipper. XD

  28. 28 Lady Seoul

Cool beans, I hope the viikii team would subbed this as well. ^_^

  29. 29 rouninghie

ahhh…i’m ganna miss so much dis drama..one of my fav..lab u hyun bin and ha ji won..and special…oska wahahaha…u guys r totally awesome…u made us happy…sarangheoyo…….

  34. 34 liz

I keep refreshing dramabeans.com over and over again, hoping to catch Episode 19′s recap fresh out of the oven!

I can’t believe Secret Garden’s going to end soon. It’s been an enjoyable eighteen plus hours of squealing/crying in front of my laptop. I only realised after watching Episode 18 that Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won won the SBS 2010 Best Couple award (and both won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively). No surprise there! ;)

  35. 35 D

i totally agree, this drama wouldn’t have been what it is without Hyun bin taking over Jang Hyuk’s role. man…I don’t know…I love Jang Hyuk but Kim Joowang is totally HYUN BIN. so sad this drama is ending.

    • 35.1 jaykay

      AMEN!
as much as i love jang hyuk, hyun bin nailed this role. sriously, it wouldn’t have been the same. he got alot of love from this(:
      he IS KIM JOO WON.

    • 39.1 nanu

      yah so true..

  40. 40 mehappy

OMG!!! It is ending soon..just wanted to say how wonderful the casts are. The lead are the perfect couple(really great choice)for this drama. Ha Ji Won, love her in every drama. She is so great in every role she play. This one just prove another greatness of her acting skills. I’ve been watching k-drama for along time and watch many actors and actress from different roles, however they never exceed to my expection as much as Ha ji won play her different roles. From action, drama, comedy, and not to mention horror, this girl have it all under her belt. Really, Ha Ji won…you rock!!!!! I have to say she also have great physique. I like the fact that she’s not super skinny. Now i have to wait for her new movie to come out:)…Congratulation to all the cast for doing such a great job on SG!!!!!

  41. 41 Cam

Wow…..I can’t believe that this drama will be ending soooon, oh aigoo! What a flying time flies so fast!

  44. 44 C

Honestly, SG’s nothing for me without the supporting cast – especially Ah Young, Secretary Kim and TAE SUN

  45. 45 ms. virgo

I really like Secret Garden… im inlove again… ilove hyun bin…..

  46. 46 Farah

I miss Secret Garden so much. Why did you have to end * tears* the other KDrama shows are good and all but SG is and will always be my first show affair. Please please please have a sequel like It started with a kiss (Playful Kiss). I guess I will just have to suffer and watch my other shows: Lie to Me, Romance Town, Baby-faced Beauty, and whatever else I can find to fill the void of not seeing SG anymore.
