Sign wins (but just barely) in Wednesday ratings

Two new shows kicked off with strong premieres today, bringing in ratings that were just within 0.2% of each other. SBS’s medical investigation drama Sign was the official first-place show with a rating of 16.1%, but MBC’s My Princess was close behind with a 15.9%.

On the other hand, KBS’s President dropped from its previous episode number of 10.0% to an 8.9%. It has been in single digits for most of its run thus far, unable to break through despite generally favorable reviews.

I haven’t caught much of Sign yet, which is next on the docket, though it looks like a well-made, brisk show that’ll probably incorporate a good amount of tense drama and suspense. (My big question is: Even if it looks good, will it be emotionally engaging?) On the other end of the spectrum, I thought My Princess had a fun, light tone, much as I expected.

It’ll be interesting to see how the race heats up tomorrow and in the coming weeks: Will they stay neck in neck, or will one pull ahead? Will people opt for a slick procedural show, or stick with familiar comfort-food fare in a bubbly rom-com?

totally agree. I (reluctantly) watched it with a friend and it 'was definitely better than expected. I'm actually looking forward to the next episode. Kim Tae Hee seemed a little over-acty sometimes but I love her as Lee Sul. She's super cute. I have yet to watch Sign but I will soon.

I agree too! Some parts were a bit boring but generally, Kim Tae Hee has turned in quite a refreshing winning portrayal. If I can watch this show with my finger on the fast-forward button I think I will definitely enjoy it!

My Princess was adorable. And it's a pleasant surprise that Song Seung Hun's character is NICE... which felt so weird for a second because the male lead is usually a bit of a prick at the beginning, but I find him very likable (so far).

i know! he has every trait of a second lead: nice, some angst, and...uh, nice. oh and pining for a girl he grew up with. but i like it :) He and Lee Seul had a really nice friendly dynamic in the first episode, which was refreshing and it would be interesting to see how he's gonna treat her, seeing how much he hated that grave...(which i presume to be her grandfather's).

I haven't watch Sign Yet... But I trust the writers and PD...

I loved their previous drama, harvest villa.... I have high expectation with SIGN.

I emotionally engaged with harvest villa.... I couldn't count how many times I cried for that drama.

Hope Sign would be the same effect as harvest villa to make me invested with the characters

haven't seen Sign yet but I've caught a glimpse of My Princess and I enjoyed watching the first episode since I didn't find Kim Tae-hee nor Song Seung-hun acting annoying, they actually fit their characters well and I love the positive vibe of the whole episode. let's see if this will continue with the next episodes if not, I'll try watching Sign :)

My Princess is going to be the surprise for 2011 and probably will break the MBC curse for the Wed-Thu time slot. Sign is good but will just attract a different demographic/taste.

my princess kind hurt my eyes. the shooting/editing is soooo bad there. it cuts back and forth in each scene that it just makes my head hurt trying to see the whole big picture.

I do not see any cut back & forth. Your TV has problem? or the screen is blur online or u have problem with download? The shooting is nice. I see it online, high definition, screens are clear & cinematography is wonderful.

Finish watching first episode of My princess too. I like it too much. It is really interesting, romantic, funny & has small mystery. Right, it is really above my expectation. I want to see other episodes immediately and can not wait.

I reaaaaally hope SSH's character ends up falling for KTH's first. I'm starting to dislike dramas where the girl ends up pining for the guy first because THAT ALWAYS HAPPENS! (Which is one of the great perks about Secret Garden; it's Joo-Won chasing the girl around--not the other way around!)

i'm confused... if kim tae hee's character is supposed to be poor, how can she afford a lady dior bag (the red bag she uses when she goes to the museum) which costs in the range of $2000 and $3000 USD?

Sign not only keeping up with but winning over My Princess in ratings is a definite surprise! I'm not sure if I will follow Signs. I'll wait to hear more responses abt it first. I would like to see what twist they will make on this to differentiate from American and even Japanese procedurals. I already watch a lot of American procedurals and tend to watch asian dramas to balance out all those murders.

I watched both dramas on the internet. I liked My Princess although I did think she was a bit over-acting to the point that this started to remind me of Personal Taste which I had grown to hate since over-acting was done to the very end of it by the female lead. I am going to keep watching for a few more episode to see if she improves or if I get so wrapped up in the story that I can overlook her acting. I liked the rest of the drama just fine. I am sure this one will do well. It won't be a smash hit, but it is good entertainment.

As for Sign, I hated it. It bore me to tears and it was so blatantly over-the-top fiction/ fantasy with long monologues through out that I was rolling my eyes more times than I care to admit. I don't know if anyone watched Korean cable drama "God's Quiz" that recently ended, but that medical investigation drama was awesome and puts this one to shame. It may have had crappy FX make-up (some of it was truly cheesy) but the story, the characters and the suspense/tension in it was awesome. Coming from watching that great drama to Sign, I struggled to finished the episode. Plus, that ending with the switch-a-roo was totally lame/cheesy and so unbelievable to be used to create the climax of the episode. I gave the drama even less points for using that trick. It was so uncreative of them and predictable. (And yes, the investigation along with the cutting up of the body was poorly done that it did not look believable.) The only things that got me to watch this until the end was the Female Ball-Buster Cop who looked like she was a character out of a Marvel Comic and her sidekick who is a scruffy Jeong Kyeo-woon who acted more like a Rebel without a Cause than a professional cop. But Jeong was drool worthy, so I kept watching with hopes of seeing him again to melt over. Unfortunately, I did not luck out with that. Just more of the annoy female lead who continued to wear her "I am not sure what I am supposed to do other than to look cute" dazed look. She really annoyed me. Again, Sign was a disappointment after seeing all of God Quiz. I recommend skipping Sign and just watch God Quiz on the internet. More bang for your buck.

I'm going to have to agree on some level to this. The characters of Sign were.. characters. It was very, very, very alike to watching most standard Japanese detective shows.

•Main character newbie watson: check
•Character who knows everything/is the best sherlock holmes dude: check
-Guy he gets into fights with at his job: double check
•Bitchy woman cop with short haircut who clawed her way to the top: check
•Rebel Cop: check

Jeong Kyeo-woon...is wearing a wig. Ha, ha, ha.
.... He should really keep that wig on.

Sooooo.... After SKKS and MGIAG, I'm only watching Secret Garden now..... MSOAN/MMM totally FAILED me, gave up on episode 1...

I always check DB for all my Kdrama news and I always read about My Princess.. I know it is top billed by famous actors but never really paid attention to it.. I had some free time tonight and just went online and watched the first episode with incomplete subs.. and although I didnt get all of it, I was surprisingly entertained and engaged... I think I'm gonna watch episode 2 and hopefully keep watching the entire series.. =))

After seeing first episode, I fall in love with MY PRINCESS and continue to watch it. I prefer director makes some scenes faster a little. Wow, it is really lovely, funny, interesting with small secret of the true family of student.
KTH suits her role well.
