Dream High: Episode 13

This drama gives me the warm and fuzzies, but even more than that, it fulfills that hole left by so many dramas where style and fanservice are swapped in as stand-ins for actual plot or continuity. With so many idols, Dream High could so easily devolve into a nonstop fanservice extravaganza, but instead it’s working the performances in to make sense with the plot, rather than just shoehorning them in ’cause they know the fans’ll eat it up regardless.

This episode kept the drama in first place for the night, recording a strong 17.9%.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

Sam-dong stands there onstage, hearing dulled, wondering, “Is this the answer the stage is giving me?”

He watches the keyboardist play and counts down to his cue, then starts singing. Problem is, while he’s on time and his voice sounds good, he’s singing in the wrong key, sounding a discordant melody.

Sam-dong sees the confused murmuring in the audience and realizes that something is wrong, and breaks off, courage faltering. But Hye-mi, true to her promise, refuses to let him fail and heads to the second story. She gestures that he’s flat, then indicates the beats so he can get back on track — and he does.

Hye-mi mouths along the lyrics as she keeps the beat, and Sam-dong keeps his eyes fixed on her as he wows the crowd, both of them letting their tears fall.

In the end, he gets a standing ovation, and he cries out of pain and relief — his dream’s not dead, but the revival of an almost-dead hope is a painful thing.

Hye-mi and Oh-hyuk meet with Sam-dong’s doctor for notes on how to help Sam-dong, and are surprised when the doctor informs them that his illness has nothing to do with head trauma.

Jin-gook is the guest of honor at a ceremony celebrating his recent No. 1 performance on Music Bank as a solo artist. Even his manager is impressed with the level of his success, but Jin-gook is more moved by a particular congratulatory wreath, sent by his father.

Hye-mi presents Sam-dong with a tuning fork, telling him that if he’s able to grasp the A note as his anchor, he’ll be fine. She starts to rattle off a list of foods he needs to avoid, and Sam-dong cuts in to remind her that the doctor said his head injury has nothing to do with his deafness — so she can stop acting out of guilt. Hye-mi says that she knows, but that doesn’t matter, and that she’ll help him no matter what.

Sam-dong asks if she’s doing this because she likes him, or feels sorry for him. It’s a rhetorical question, and he adds the request that she stop, because it’s confusing him. Aw. It’s the sort of thing you say when you like somebody who you know doesn’t like you back, and you’re trying your best to get over them.

He tells her that she’s done enough and that he won’t do anything stupid, so she can stop worrying about him. And that he’s sorry for making her cry.

The next focus of music lessons is about pitch, and Pil-sook is the only student with perfect pitch. (Perfect pitch is a natural talent where a person can identify any note without needing a music cue.) Kyung-jin tells them that perfect pitch is nice, but what they really need is relative pitch, the understanding of the notes’ relation to each other.

This lesson is particularly relevant to Sam-dong’s interests, because he could perform without worrying if he could always be assured of the right notes. He asks if one can learn perfect pitch, disappointed when Kyung-jin answers no.

Still, it’s worth checking out, so he asks to meet Pil-sook later, and she readily agrees…which gets Jason’s Pil-sook-radar up and his jealousy-o-meter spiking. He asks Sam-dong, then Hye-mi, what that’s all about, but doesn’t get any answers and stands there in dissatisfaction.

Baek-hee is now the new outcast at Kirin, thanks to her showcase disaster. She sits at a cafeteria table, only to have the two girls haughtily move over to a different table. Sigh. The misery of the high school condition is universal.

Ah-jung joins the girls and gossips that Baek-hee plagiarized her showcase song from a songwriter at her agency, and she’s going to be cut loose any day now. That means no other agency will take her on, and her budding career is finito.

Baek-hee is joined at the table by Hye-mi, who sits down without saying a word and sticks her earbud into Baek-hee’s ear. Baek-hee points out that there’s no music playing, to which Hye-mi tells her to just go along with it.

Touched at the gestury but wary, Baek-hee says that her career isn’t over, and that she won’t give up. Hye-mi merely says, “I know.”

Kyung-jin finds Baek-hee sitting alone backstage, and approaches her sympathetically. Baek-hee admits that she knows why she did what she did, and that breaking the rules got her to this point. She intends to ask President Yoon for another chance, and if he gives it, she promises to work hard without cheating. And if he doesn’t…well, she’ll have to start all over from the bottom, hard as that’ll be.

Kyung-jin nods her approval, and answers Baek-hee’s request for help with a heartfelt “I will.” I’ve gotta say, I’m really liking how formerly tough-as-nails Kyung-jin has evolved into this awkward softie.

Sam-dong practices in the studio, trying to grasp perfect pitch. Oh-hyuk cautions him that learning it isn’t easy (or even, perhaps, possible), and that with medicine and care, he won’t lose his hearing. The problem is the tinnitus that comes and goes and drowns out sound — and if Sam-dong were to give up the idea of performing and instead took on songwriting, he’ll have no problem continuing on.

But Sam-dong doesn’t want that — he won’t give up performing, and he vows to rid himself of his weakness.

At half-past five (and therefore well into Pil-sook’s meeting with Sam-dong), Jason is hyper-conscious of the time and trying to talk himself out of caring, or barging in on them. The other students send him annoyed looks since he’s ostensibly listening to music, but instead arguing to himself like a crazy person, and holding up the line at the listening station.

With some prodding from an annoyed In-sung, he finally decides to go. Well, it only took you forever.

In the old Misfit classroom, Pil-sook describes to Sam-dong how she hears pitch, and how her vocal cords understand how much they have to vibrate to produce a particular note. So it’s not just about the sound, necessarily, but about the feel of the note.

Hye-mi doesn’t seem to be jealous of the situation but she’s there nonetheless, watching the lesson, keeping abreast of Sam-dong’s progress. She finds it very amusing to see Jason sidle up to the window, and upon seeing her he comes up with a lame excuse about losing his way to the library.

I love that Hye-mi always sees Jason at his weakest, and that she calls him on his bluff: She offers to take him to the library, and he has no choice but to go along. Well, it’s that or tell her the truth. And we all know he can’t handle the truth. Yet.

The teachers meet with Ma Doo-shik, now the CEO of White Entertainment, who is interested in managing the debuts of Pil-sook and Hye-mi. Each student has her weaknesses: Pil-sook’s is her old photos, considering how this is a cruel, cold world that values appearance more than anything.

Jin-man is disgusted with this line of reasoning and throws a mini hissy fit (“Does a person sing with their face? Or dance with their face?”), which is both hilarious and a little paining since Park Jin-young has seen his share of face-ridiculing in his day. Aw. I’m sorry. Your awesome comic acting totally rocks, if that’s any consolation. Well, plus you’re super-rich and successful.

Hye-mi’s problem area is her personality, and although Jin-man tries to defend her as “not that bad,” he then remembers examples of her rudeness and is shut down by Principal Shi. The principal wonders why Doo-shik picked such problematic students to back.

Doo-shik wonders that himself, and imagines a scenario where the two girls (who’ve been formed into the group “Sook and Mi”) are guests on a live radio show, hosted by Super Junior’s Eunhyuk and Leeteuk. A fan calls in and makes mention of Pil-sook’s weight troubles, sending Hye-mi into a rant against her since she’s recognized the voice as Ria. Gotta say, when Hye-mi seemed like a bitter pill, I had no great liking for her attitude — but now that she’s shown herself to be caring and sympathetic, I LOVE her surly face. It cracks me up every time it’s used as a recurring joke.

Doo-shik backpedals with Oh-hyuk, who says he’s “disappointed” in Doo-shik for being no better than all the other agency presidents who throw money around to make kids into singers.

Jin-man hilariously flip-flops loyalties from one side to the other, and Oh-hyuk smartly maneuvers Doo-shik into proceeding with the debut. At mention of Sam-dong, Jin-man says that it’s too bad he has such stage fright (the explanation that has circulated about his showcase performance), since he has such a strong sense of relative pitch.

Stirred by those words, Oh-hyuk hurries to inform Sam-dong that there may be a way for him after all: Instead of trying to learn perfect pitch to identify all notes, if he just focuses on one note — the tuning fork’s A — then he ought to be able to figure his way around, using the A to root himself and link him to the other notes.

Jin-gook loiters outside his father’s house, feeling buoyed by the wreath his father sent. Gruff Dad isn’t comfortable with those fluffy things normal people call emotions, so he mutters to his secretary, “Why’d you do something I didn’t tell you to do?” But the secretary answers, “But you told me to send it yesterday…” Jin-gook smiles, and tells his father he’s been working hard. He sees that Dad is wearing the watch he gave him and grins wider, and leaves in high spirits.

Jin-gook calls Hye-mi out, who congratulates him for his No. 1 on Music Bank. He scoffs at her trademark blank face, to which she answers, “This IS my congratulations face.” Ha. Love it. He tells her about his father sending the wreath, and she brightens up in excitement over it.

Jin-gook pinches her cheeks to confirm that he’s not dreaming, so she returns the gesture and tells him to confirm his own dreams. So they stand there, pinching each other’s cheeks, grinning like giddy fools. This may be the first time I’ve ever thought this couple was cute, but it’s better late than never.

Sam-dong approaches and Hye-mi quickly lets go of Jin-gook, which is a fact that doesn’t go unnoticed by him. But Sam-dong isn’t fazed to see them together, and congratulates Jin-gook pleasantly on his single success.

A call from his agency darkens Jin-gook’s mood, as he had specifically asked President Yoon to NOT turn his father’s gesture into a promo opportunity. Looks like the president has reneged on his word, and Jin-gook heads off to go take care of the matter.

…and the next thing we know, he’s at the police station for assaulting President Yoon, with reporters swarming around for the juicy story.

Oh-hyuk comes to collect him, and delivers him to tempoary refuge in the old basement studio, which Doo-shik has rented. Sitting there, Jin-gook notes glumly, “I’ve come back to the bottom.” So fleeting, the idol’s fame.

Hye-mi and Sam-dong see the report on TV, which looks mighty bad for Jin-gook. President Yoon works the victim stance by sobbing about trusting a friend, wearing a neck brace and sitting in a wheelchair. Worst of all, the attack was all caught on CCTV.

The Kirin students enjoy a laugh at Jin-gook’s expense, since some Photoshop-happy netizens have parodied the incident with references to Baker King (changed to Assault King) and My Gangster Boyfriend (changed to My Gangster Shi-hyuk). Gossipmonger Ah-jung spreads the story that Jin-gook hit Baek-hee at a previous showcase, bruising her face and necessitating her stage makeup. At least there’s one voice willing to dissent, and In-sung defends his friend.

Make that two: Jason tells Ria (who’s busy speculating on the gangster status of Jin-gook’s supposed bio-dad) to shut up. Baek-hee feels bad for him as well, but she keeps herself out of view.

Oh-hyuk takes Jin-gook home late that night, and they arrive as Hye-mi and Sam-dong are cleaning up the graffiti’d posters and slurs posted up on their front wall. Oh-hyuk’s sister fusses over him sympathetically, but not without trying to fish around for a story. Lol. Can’t blame a reporter for trying.

Jin-gook’s father hears the news with chagrin, and is advised to keep his distance because involving himself would only cause more media furor. He arrives at Oh-hyuk’s house later that night and asks for an explanation, showing some faith that his son wouldn’t have acted like that without a reason. Jin-gook merely bows his head and says through tears that he was reckless, and that he’s sorry for disappointing him. Really, is now the time to be playing the noble idiot? What do you have to lose by admitting the truth?

Instead, Jin-gook just kneels and apologizes over and over.

Baek-hee goes to her mother’s store that night, where Mom has been delivered a special present from the agency president — a box of fresh abalone, an expensive and generous gift.

Mom is pleased to accept, and doesn’t understand why Baek-hee suddenly looks desperate and begs her to return the gift. Such a large gift without reason may just signal a prelude to her being let go…

Sam-dong comes into the room as Jin-gook is sulking in bed and wallowing in his misery. I love that Sam-dong’s first attempt to draw a response is, “Hey, I’m wearing your underwear.” HAHA. But no, you know the depression is severe when that gets no rise out of Jin-gook, so Sam-dong offers to play a little game of “Whose life sucks more?” Hey, I thought this was supposed to cheer him up, buddy.

Jin-gook is in no mood for this, but Sam-dong proceeds, starting with their parents: Jin-gook has no mother, but Sam-dong has no father, so they’re square on that front. But Jin-gook has got a No. 1 TV appearance under his belt, while he hasn’t even debuted yet, so he’s got one up on him.

And sure, Jin-gook has turned into a national gangster overnight, but Sam-dong has a bigger concern: “My ears are ruined.”

Jin-gook is shocked, and that defuses some of his tension. Sam-dong presses his point: “I’m just as depressed as you, but I’m doing my best. Even if there’s no sound, I chase it so I can sing. Do you know why? So I can beat you.” He wants to take on Jin-gook fair and square and be so strong that nobody can pity him, and win — meaning, with Hye-mi.

Sam-dong tells him to buck up and get it together, which is just the thing Jin-gook needs to hear to kick his butt into gear. In the morning, he finds a note from Sam-dong telling him to see him prove himself, since his music test at school today.

In the cafeteria, Pil-sook overhears Jason talking to some hussy named Julie and signing off with an “I love you.” So when he slides over to ask about her meeting with Sam-dong, she glares at him while he explains, just as her senior, that hanging around with guys one-on-one could lead to misunderstandings and scandals — though of course HE’s not the type to misunderstand. It’s just all those pesky other people she has to watch out for!

She retorts that he’d better watch it with the “I love you”s to his precious Julie, and that brings a smile to his face as he guesses, “Is that advice, or jealousy?” She asks him the same thing, but neither one is willing to confess first, so they agree to both spit it out on the count of three…and then neither one says anything.

Jason huffs, “Forget it” and leaves, while Pil-sook sits all peeved. But then he turns back and sits down again, admitting, “Okay, I was jealous. You?” She admits the same, and AAAAGHHH THESE TWO ARE SO CUTE.

Hye-mi grabs Sam-dong (pushing him against a wall, rawr!) before his test to check on his condition, and tells him to look to her if his hearing fades out again so she can signal him.

She’s not sold on his assurances that he’s fine, but he points out that she can hardly follow him around all his life sending him hand signals, and promises to demonstrate so well that she won’t ever worry about him again.

There’s an adorable moment in the testing room when Jason and Pil-sook both reach for their test music and draw back shyly, urging the other to go ahead. Then they decide to both go on the count of three, which is hilarious because you just know they’re the couple who gets sickeningly lovey-dovey at everything, cooing, “No you hang up first. No you. No really! Okay, on the count of three…” I love that Kyung-jin puts the kibosh on that ridiculousness with an eyeroll.

The test is simple: Sing their selections a cappella, two students per song, complete with harmonization. The piano will start them off.

The Milk couple had looked excited at the prospect of singing together, so when Jason realizes he has the same music as Hye-mi, he sends the most hilarious sad-puppy face Pil-sook’s way. Adorable.

Next up: Sam-dong and Pil-sook. Jin-gook arrives at the school in time to join Oh-hyuk and Jin-man outside the test studio. Before starting, Sam-dong asks if they can nix the piano, wanting to start off a cappella, which shouldn’t be a problem for his partner since Pil-sook has perfect pitch.

It’s a strange request since this would be a handicap for most students, and the teachers are nervous at Sam-dong’s show of bravado. Kyung-jin warns that he can’t complain about his grade, then.

With that, Sam-dong starts them off a cappella, and when Pil-sook joins him, they’re perfectly in tune with each other. [ Download ]

Everyone’s amazed, and Jason’s really tickling my fancy in this episode, with the way he smiles widely when looking at Pil-sook sing, then grimaces when he looks at Sam-dong, then smiles again at his honey. Silly, transparent boy.

Kyung-jin admits that she’d thought Sam-dong was full of hot air — but sure enough, he and Pil-sook both managed without any mistakes. A+.

Jin-gook watches in with a mix of admiration and, I think, bitterness (or at least self-pity) that Sam-dong managed his demons so well. Sam-dong chases him down in the hall to tell him that it’s Jin-gook’s turn to dig himself out of his own abyss, reminding him that he won’t wait for his showdown forever. So he’d better get on it, pronto.

Sam-dong turns back at the last minute to toss something his way — the K pendant, which he no longer needs.

At the lockers, Hye-mi sees Baek-hee in a daze, stumbling over her own feet and swaying dangerously as she walks up the stairs. She follows her to the roof, where Baek-hee approaches the railing and slips one foot out of her shoe.

Hye-mi interrupts, playing the moment lightly by chiding her for walking around with her shoelaces untied, bending down to tie them for her. But when she looks up, she’s startled at Baek-hee’s expression. In tears, Baek-hee cries on Hye-mi’s shoulder and says pitifully, “It’s all my fault, what happened to Jin-gook. He hit President Yoon while saving me.”

WHAT?!

HOW CAN YOU JUST END HERE?

I need to knoooooooooooooow!

COMMENTS

Oooh, great twist! After I was all ready to sigh that Jin-gook’s reckless moment seemed overplayed for something relatively small, this is a welcome revelation. So the question is: Why exactly did Baek-hee need saving?

I have a couple of theories. Perhaps Baek-hee went to the agency to beg the president to take her back, and he got angry and was about to get violent with her, which Jin-gook saw (while there to talk about his own beef with the prez) and stopped. OR… and this is more unsavory, but perhaps Baek-hee was begging for another chance, and President Yoon saw fit to take advantage of the situation by offering a sponsorship situation (sponsorship = casting couch scenario). I don’t think she’d offer that herself (what with her vow not to break the rules anymore), but the guy always seemed a bit scummy… It would be an interesting way to address one of those common issues that everyone knows about but doesn’t address openly (at least, not until recent years).

As much as I’m a fan of bromance, I appreciate that the Sam-dong/Jin-gook storyline in this episode went much deeper than that. I love that Sam-dong beelines for Jin-gook after his test (rather than, say, Hye-mi or his teachers) and pushes him to dig himself out of his funk. These characters care about each other too much to let each other slide into misery, but they’re not afraid to tell each other the harsh truth, either, rather than coddling them. Like with Hye-mi and Sam-dong — she is essentially let off the hook by the doctor…only she realizes she perhaps doesn’t want to be let off the hook. Or rather, she wants to help regardless of things like obligation and guilt.

It’s this kind of tough love that Baek-hee lacks, and while strength of character is at least partially innate, it doesn’t help that she fell prey to exactly the type of cutthroat, superficial system that feeds off of her weaknesses and insecurities. In contrast, our Not-Quite-Misfits-Anymore have built up a support system, and I love that the round-robin with the K pendant is a nice motif to illustrate that. They know they can’t save their friends from their demons, but they CAN push and encourage and persuade their friends to save themselves.

Last but not least, here’s the ending clip, with Taecyeon/Jin-gook singing “My Valentine” on Music bank. [ Download ]

BTW...how is Baekhee's hair suddenly long? Is that supposed to be an indication of time passing or she just wanted long hair again (like Hyemi? ^^) and put some extensions in?

See episode 12. She had on the extensions during her performance at the showcase.

I've been wondering the same thing. I assume they're extensions (she wants a new look? or go back to her old one?) because not that much time has passed since the start of the songwriting class, when she still had short hair :-/

Maybe its to signify her transformation? Like when she cut her hair after she cut off ties with Hyemi. This could be her redeeming hairstyle?? Who knows.. O_o

But yeah they are defiantly extensions.

Could be. I dunno. That was my initial thought.

I mean I saw that she had extensions in the showcase in Episode 12...but I didn't think it would carry over to this one. I'm like...what's going on? LOL

But it's good either way. I was just confused.

Isn't it weird that Director Yoon let Baek-Hee come in when he is expecting Jin-Gook if he want to sexually harrass her? Yoon migth just get violent because he is angry but that has no reason for Jin-Gook to hit him really hard.

An Alternative theory is that Yoon has been asked to fake harassing Baek-Hee so that Jin-Gook can see and get angry and act violently. The whole scheme is a setup in order to destroy Jin-Gook's father. However, Director Yoon didn't even expect Baek-Hee to ask for meeting him when I called Jin-Gook.

Whatever theory I can come up make no sense if you consider all the minor details. I am looking forwards to see how it get resolved in the next episode.

The director wasn't expecting Jingook. Someone else alerted Jingook to the fact that the director was about to release the tidbit about his father, so he was going there without having made an appointment.

It makes sense that the scheme was entirely setup by JG's father's opposition and Yoon, maybe even BH, were in on it!

At this point, i think the pendant passing will come full circle... And Baek Hee seems to be a likely contender for K. It's time they release a soundtrack song sang by Eunjung!

i hope they'll release a separate OST of the various cast versions of the songs that they sang in the show.

I've really been trying to avoid speculation on the identity of K. I know myself well enough to know that I'd likely obsess over it to the degree that I'd be unable to sit back and get lost in the cracktasticness of Crack High.

If I had to take a wild guess, I'd probably go with Baek-Hee. Much as that currently irks me. I guess it's because she seems the least likely of the characters to be K. And can't you just see the Noble Idiot giving her the pendant to pull her out of her slump?

It's strange, but I get the impression that HM means more to JG than she does to SD. And yes, I realize that makes me sound like I do crack in addition to watching it.

It's just that JG seems more interested in the girl than the music career. SD seems more interested in the music than the girl. JG's dream seems to be sharing the music with HM. SD's dream seems to be the music itself, and HM is just icing on that particular cake.

For the record, I'm not pro JG or SD. I personally think it would be hysterical and awesome if HM and Baek-Hee realized their love hate rivalry is really more pent-up sexual frustration, confessed their feelings for each other and thumbed their noses entirely at the boys.

Totally agree with you on HM+JG. Which is why SD has given up any romantic aspirations and he is now all business with HM.

Seeing you're dream girl/first love kiss another guy is more than enough to suppress that urge...and his juvenile pride tells him he'd be like knowingly buying "cracked eggs".

However, it seems the drama queens are playing the shifting pursuit again and HM has now become the pursuer though a bit subdued..Next eps will surely let us know.

LOL you clearly didn't see the part where Jingook left hye mi for his debut and never even called her once throughout that 6 whole months :-S With Samdong, he didn't even care about music at first, he followed hye mi. She's the one who made him come with her. She encouraged him to sing. HM definately means more to SD, if he didn't care about her he wouldn't have done what he did. Seeing the girl u love kiss another man obviously would hurt his feelings, but HE loves her. So in order to make her happy, he is actually letting the girl choose if that would make her happy. There's a saying: if you really love someone, you have to let them go. And personally that's what i think he is doing

Whaaaat??? Sam Dong only followed Hye Mi because of her not because he wanted to join the school. He challenged Jason to a competition to prove himself to Hye Mi. Every step of his music career was motivated by his love for Hye Mi, to step up for Hye Mi, to make Hye Mi his. I think the turning point was when he saw the girl he was working so hard for, kissing another guy. That's when he realized that all his effort was for nothing, but then also realized that he enjoyed the journey as well and that's when he realizes his love for music. I think now he has given up on Hye Mi because he realizes that she will never be his (though I think she will) and that he has to pursue his other love, his love for music. I also think Jin Guk needs his father's love the most. Jin Guk abandoned Hye Mi and the others for his father, the first time when he gave up the showcase to adhere to his father's instructions and the second time to make his debut and prove himself to his father.

Thanks for your recap and conclusions. After BaekHee admitted it was her fault, my thoughts went straight to the sponsorship situation like you mentioned. I wish they didn't. I guess I heard too much about that stuff going on.

I like how the misfits have that inner circle of support for each other, too. I always like when everyone likes each other and gets along, but then there would be no drama. Dream High does it well that though they are competing, they still cheer for each other. Pretty much just saying what you said already. haha.

Awesome recap!

Thanks JB for a great recap.

I was expecting a SD and HM kiss this episode. It didn't happen so the 'Who's going to get the girl?' game is still on as far as I'm concerned. HM is just a great friend to all her 'family'. I thought JG might have a lead what with knowing her from way back but I don't think she treats him much different from SD. However, coming from a different culture I may be totally missing the nuances.

The song My Valentine has had heavy rotation in the house today. Totally love it.

Wonder what happened with B*H and Pres Yoon. I just can't see her being put on the couch...I don't particularly like Pres Yoon's character but he didn't seem sleazy to me...

Even though JG has hit bottom with 'the people' and will have to start again with his Dad I'm glad it will gave him the opportunity to join the gangster Pres.

Look forward to seeing what comes next.

My first thought with the whole Jin gook beating up the president I admittedly thought Baek hee is involved confirming it was when the mom had those gifts & yes I thought of the casting couch scenario right away.
I really do hope that is the case because it would show what really does go on behind closed doors in the entertainment world. I would totally give props to Dream High for actually taking something serious & showing it.

I say that K pendent is a curse instead of a good luck charm. yes it's good luck to whomever has it but then once you give it away slowly things start to fall apart, people should just believe in themselves instead of putting too much faith in that pendent.

I really hope though that Sam doong will get the girl. I just don't find Jin gook & Hye mi appealing, I guess it's because I honestly just see Taecyeon & Suzy, which to me seem more like a brother & sister vibe. That should be telling you something then when the actor/actress isn't convincing some of the audience of their character then they need more help on their acting skills. I mean I can see them as their characters separately but when they are together I see Taec & Suzy, that's the reason why I've never supported this pairing. I am really hoping for a Samdoong & Hyemi ending. Jingook looks better with Baekhee anyways.

Thanks for the recaps.

I agree. Somehow when Suzy is with Taecyeon, I see Suzy acting.
When she's with SamDong she becomes Hyemi, kind of.

She just has more chemistry with SooHyun and it's HARD to root for MiGook when it's like this.

About the K pendent...I'm soo torn. Its kinda like you said...but then kinda not.

1-> The Director gives it away and he is forced to leave the school.
2-> BaeHee gives it away and her manager wants to replace her in the group and she gets caught plagiarizing. 3-> HyeMi gives it away..nothing bad really happens to her other than being confused between the two boys. Infact doesn't Ma want her to debut? :S
4-> Sam..we'll have to wait and see.

Totally love how SD is dealing with his hearing problem his is truly a strong baby n when HM grabbed him was like OMO moved closer to the tv but there no action such a tease DH
Poor BH for her to actually think of suicide she must be feeling hopeless n cornered n HM being there in the nick of time was sooo touching that I shed some tears even when she choose to sit next to BH during what looked like breakfast was touching moments for me...ohhh DH wish you had 16 more episodes instead of the very few thats left

I think move makes it clear that she is at least considering SD romantically. Especially after he told her he didn't want her to confuse him anymore.

I like that HM's impulsiveness turns the tables on the boys.
When she and Jason are together, with similiarly colored hair, I see them as noona/dongsaeng. Even though she is younger - she is definitely the "big" sister who keeps him on his toes.

anyone else find that scene between sam dong and hyemi right after milky couple confession and before music exam irresistible? it was like serious chemistry was going off between the two and the way he was looking at her..... <3
he was holding her hand too! kekeke.
it honestly feels like sam dong has slowly crept into hyemi's heart. or maybe it's suzy's acting improving so she seems more feeling than she used to around sam dong? but she's been happier seeing him happy than when jinguk was. every little bit of progress made her beam and she seemed much more concerned/frantic about sam dong.

I completely adore this drama! And I'm so happy that Samdong is over his emo (minus the beiber hair) ways. I like that he's finally kicking his butt into gear and that Hye Mi's affections aren't guilt induced anymore.

And am I the only one who noticed that Hye Mi is mirroring Jin-Gook's (her boyfriend?) actions towards Baekhi? The earphone thing when others are talking about her and the shoe tying thing. I like that it's showing that both boys have taught her a few things when it comes to how she treats people....although right now it mostly seems to be Jin-Gook. Back in epi 10? when she was about yell at SD because he messed up on the coreo, she stops herself (kind of mirroring episode 4 when he told her not to throw a tantrum just bc she was upset).

And also, what's with everyone saying that SD deserves HM more than JG? If you really want to put it in perspective, JG "deserves" HM bc he literally has no one. But I've always been kind of "meh" on the whole people deserving another person kind of thing. She's not an inanimate object

Required fields are marked *

The reason why people want SD to end up with HM is because he was there for her thru everything not because he going deaf.. and he's proving that to HM that he wants her love from her heart and not from pity.

""If you really want to put it in perspective, JG “deserves” HM bc he literally has no one."" -----that's a bunch of BS- so he deserve her because he doesn't have anyone?OKAY- that's a totally great reasoning. I don't think so.. JG does have people there for him- he has a father(who is finally turning around) and he has a older brother (friend)- the guy that they did SNSD dance for... so JG does have people that love him in his life as well... and as you watch ep 13- as Sam Dong puts it there to JG "you think your the only one that has problems, here's your 3 problem , let me match the first 2 and let me top your 3rd problem" ---

EXACTLY. Jin gook has people loving him aswell, if you wanna compare it with Samdong, he only has a mother and i think he is suffering way more than jingook. Yeah hye mi might looks up at both boys but seems like her relationship with jingook is just about the pass thats all they talk about, im kinda sick of their boring stories together it gets ols like move on already, but samdong brings many sides of hye mi. Both guys understands hye mi but samdong sorta changed her

Required fields are marked *

Okay basically to be honest...

I'm not that satisfied with this episode :-S Eeek
Because first, i was really looking forward to the hye mi/Samdong kiss. Which didn't happen :( Gutted

But i'm glad in this episode it turns out that Samdong's head injury has nothing to do with his illness. What a relief! Because then, if hye mi still looks after him & start developing any kind of feelings, we know it's not out of guilt :) Thank God.

The first 10 minutes of the show, i was drowned by own tears. Seeing both Hye mi and Samdong crying it's just too emotional. But yet, beautiful. You can see she really cares about him, when he's happy, she's happy. And when they were talking, Samdong asked her if she likes him.. That was intense! Damn, she looked surprised and embarassed by that question. Samdong is so sweet when he apologized for making her cry. And she got teary-eyed again in the end before he left her standing there!

Hmmm, Jingook never apologized for making her cry -,-
And when they were pinching eachother's face and Samdong saw it. The way hye mi shook jingook off and dropped her hands! Why would she do that if she doesn't have even the tiniest bit of feelings for Samdong. Even Jingook realised.

And still, in this episode i don't feel hye mi/Jingook connection. I just don't see it. I thought it was cute when they were pinching eachothers face, but only in a friendly way. They look good just being buddys but not as a lover.

I love it when hye mi pushed Samdong to the wall as if she was gonna do something totally un-expected to him. Even he was surprised!

There's 3 more episodes to go. I really hope this show don't let us down in the end. I really want Samdong and Hyemi to be together though, You can just see they secretely can't resist eachother :')

I want a kiss between them two :(

I'm right with you, I really want Sam-dong to end up with Hye-mi (still waiting for that kiss!). Earlier in the series, Jin-gook teased Sam-dong that Hye-mi would only cry in front of him, hinting that she's more comfortable with him to drop her mask than she is with him. But she's been showing more sides of herself to Sam-dong, she'll cry in front of him, he was there when she hit rock bottom, she has tried hard to help him with his condition even after finding out that it wasn't caused by head trauma. Also in the last episode (12), she lit up when he came to class, she hasn't done that for Jin-gook.

Possible answer: She could have dropped her hands b/c she knows that SD likes her and doesn't want to hurt him more than he already has been.

BUT, I think the drama has been pointing towards a HM - SD relationship the past two episodes b/c JG keeps noticing HM showing concern for SD. -- the notebook, her mentioning to Teacher Kang about SD, her dropping her hands from his face.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

but a lot of that had to do with him not knowing background stuff.

Like Hye Mi smiling at SD when he came back? That was more because they (her and Kang) got him to start trying again (JG didn't know anything about what was going on and only found out later that SD was having problems. And he told Hye Mi he was mad at her for not telling him).

Idk they could be going that route (HM/SD)...but i feel like they're going to make it ambiguous. Or neither, bc if they want to be an idol they can't really date.

Plus, it seems to me that they're implying that JG/HM are dating (they always sit next to each other, do cutesy couple things like feeding each other, and he called to tell her good news, SD alluded to it and HM didn't correct him etc), and given HM's family past (her mother leaving her family for another man)...it would be out of character for her to move on like that.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

that may be true ... that she 's happy because sam came back to class... but I don't think she had ever really looked at JG in that way..

But I think it's because she starting to realize her feeling for SD casue HM shows up to see what SD and PS was doing and was happy to find out that they were just practicing their pitch- you can say that that was nothing but why would HM need to check up on them if she didn't have more feeling for SD- I mean come she showed just like Jason did. I'm a SD/HM lover but at the end if nobody ended up together except for PS/Jason I'll be fine with that.

I also want SamMI kiss... but with 3 episodes left, it seems unlikely there will be major development in their relationship romantically.

It seems that Sam Dong is ready to let Hye Mi go and he's at ease with JG and Hm relationship (God I wish that I'm completely wrong at interpreting this episode).

He's more likely to pursue his dream to become a performer.

Besides, all I care is Sam Dong smiles again and It sure Brightens my whole day.

Wow I sounds so cheesy and pathethic. hehehhe...

That was what i didn't get. Why did Samdong say that to Jingook? When Samdong told hye mi to not get him confused cos she is giving him mixed signals with the whole caring not out of guilt thing. I feel so sorry for him. He is trying to give up though thats the thing well it looks like it anyway cos he's not like how he used to towards her. Ahh what is happening now i'm curious of what Samdong meant by that saying to Jingook!?

I want hye mi to make the effort now, i want her chasing Samdong -_-

hahaha. I also thought about this too. (Well, mostly I think we all have too much time and we are all too obsessed with this drama! I know I am.) I also thought that perhaps SD only said this to JG to get him out of his slump. However, I think now that he meant it both ways. I think he wants HM to figure out her feelings, but that he has not given up on her yet, ESPECIALLY since now his hearing will not keep him from performing or from become a star.

0

I personally thought SD only said it just to give JG encouragement and motivation. At the time of the confrontation, i believe SD had accepted (or at least, started to accept) his reality with HM. that's not to say he's already over her (or aware of her wavering feelings even), but the boy has matured, he knew he gave his best, if HM still really likes JG, then i am sure he will not interfere. after all, he adores her, i don't think he will completely disregard her feelings to get what he wants.

0

This is what I think..Sam Dong that because Hye Mi used to feel like she had a debt to repay him. So he doesn't want her to act out of pity.
I don't know which couple will be end game but neither guys have given up Hye Mi. If anything I think their rivalry will hit full throttle once Jin Gook gets out of his slump.

0

me too I need a SAMMI kiss ... It would seriouly be way more intense than the JG/HM kiss just because when SAMMI acts together it just looks more emotional... anything can happen in 3 ep.... I thought it was going to take longer for SD to get over his hearing issue but look it only took 2 eps and we are back at JG issues...

Not to butt hurt anyone but man I am pretty sick and tired of JG's issue.. I've seen it since the beginning and I was really looking forward to seeing more development with SD/HM.. why oh why did they have to create more issue for JG.. he was getting so successful in his debut... I was gonna scream when I saw him and his dad .. thank goodness atleast this time there is a new twist But I wonder if he's feeling more down because of his career or disappointing his dad.. hopefully in the new ep, it willl be more about his dreams and less about complications his dad.

Thank you JB for the recaps!

I wish I was home watching this instead of work...I can see myself bawling during Sam-dong's performace.
I love that Hye-mi continues trying to help him with his condition and that he decides not to give up on his dream.

Pil-sook and Jason are too cute. I just hope that we get a glimpse of Jason's phone gallery. I'm hoping its full of her pre-diet pictures.

Either possibility right now is possible for Jin-gook to beat up President Yoon than just the incident with his father. He has mentioned before how out of all the members of K, she is the least active and in an earlier episode he is seen trying to convince a PD to allow Baek Hee to participate in his program. Also, why would he send her mother an expensive gift if he was trying to out of the group? Is he trying to pressure into accepting it if she wants to continue in the group?

Didn't Ok-hyuk say in that it was his opinion that they (1st years like Baek Hee and Jin-gook) were debuting too quickly? Or maybe I made it up?

I've been thinking too, what BH's reason is for considering to harm herself. the scary suspicion is that she might have accepted the casting couch after being backed in a corner (plagiarism issue and non-star quality stuff) and then changed her mind which may have caused the president to go violent on her, which could be the scene that Jin Gook walked into. BH could be feeling too much shame from being involved in a casting couch incident, and from breaking from her promise to play it clean. if word comes out regarding the incident, it would totally ruin her.

Yeah, I think everyone thought it was the other way around: Sam-dong as K, and Jin-gook gets the girl. But since the pendant is now in Jin-gook's hands and there's only 3 more episodes to go, let's hope it goes the way you predict!

But who knows? What if K ends up being a girl? Or was it clearly shown as a guy in the first episode? I can't quite remember. I think Baek Hee still needs the pendant the most. I'm growing more and more sympathetic towards her character.

I thought that too especially when Sam dong was singing. They kept on flashing back to her face and she seemed to be thinking about the lyrics. Also I think the whole reversal with Jason and hye-mi and Sam dong with pil- sook could be a foreshadow to the ending couple. I do think BH's drama is about the casting couch scenario. This would fit in with her reaction to receiving the box of abalone. I don't think the gift was a prelude to getting kicked out of the group. People don't tend to send expensive gifts to people they are going to get rid of... unless they do in Korea?

can't wait for Doo Sik to go compete head-on with Top Ent. president. I hope he employs his gangster side and teach TE pres a lesson for messing with minors. On the other hand, DS tried to mess with a minor - HM - only in a different way. and am I thankful that it wasn't something similar to casting couch. (shudders) so yeah, DS should go gangster on TE pres. after all they both have gangster pasts.

and I love the Sam Dong - Jin Guk dynamics. if it were a pair of rivals from another drama, there might have been tons of blood-curling brooding, evil-plotting, and senseless jealousy extravaganza between the two. oh but no, in this Show they maintain civility. no, they remain friends despite the rivalry in all aspects. they even show genuine concern for each other, and inspire/challenge one another to get out of their quicksands. love 'em.

Ooh, I would love to see the CEOs go toe-to-toe. It's on like Donkey Kong!

The thing about his messing with Hye-mi is that he did it out of business - her father owed him money and in Mr. Go's absence, Doo-shik tried to collect from his daughter. But he also just wanted his money back, so he tried to put Hye-mi to work (but only as a singer - I think the fact that he didn't make her do anything more drastic says a lot about his sense of decency). When Oh-hyuk took over her debt, he didn't directly hassle her anymore.

On the other hand, instead of getting Baek-hee any honest job out there for an idol down on her luck (ribbon-cutting at a supermarket, "ghost singing gigs" like Pil-sook did for Ria, etc.) to recoup his investment, he seems to have tried to get something else by possibly suggesting a sponsorship situation. Ew.

Doo-shik should totally implement a hostile takeover of Top Entertainment :-p

My favourite scene was when Jason smiles like an idiot while Pil-sook's singing and then always looks so affronted when Sam-dong joins in (haha probably still upset over the meeting that those two had). I'm so pleasantly surprised by Wooyoung's acting. Jason is slowly becoming my favourite, actually. But WHO IS THIS JULIE PERSON?

I'm glad Sam-song's lightening up and smiling alot more. Did anyone else find his expressions insanely attractive when he was backed up against the wall by Hye-mi? His amused expressions kill me. And I am still crazy about the haircut and the earring.

I really really want to know who Hye-mi ends up with, if at all. It seems like she's dating Jin-gook, though the part where she backed Sam-dong against, she did look a little flustered by him, but that could just be Suzy. I mean, who wouldn't be right?

3 more episodes, I DON'T WANT THIS TO END!

I'm guessing julie is his sister and the picture on Jason's phone is pilsook that's why he didn't want her especially to see it :P

And yes!! When hye mi did that i was like you go girl ! Then the way he touched her hands telling her he wont need help, he'll impress her cos he can do it i was drooooling. Phwoar this guy is just too much to handle with his prefection looks and acting skills. I think hye mi acts better around Samdong.

I don't wanna see this show end too :'( im depressed already f my life!

I also think Wooyoung's acting has been good in this show, better than Taec (much as I love the boy). Plus WY is hilarious. Seriously, that boy is a natural comedian (his ssanti dances are just one [but awesome] example of this).

And I agree with Samz that it's probably a sister, or a cousin or something. That's what I thought as soon as I saw that scene.

Jin Guk singing My Valentine... maybe I'm over-analyzing, but if the song's for Hye Mi then it's a telling sign that in the end (song was played after the closing billboard) she will leave him and he will hate her but eventually get over it.

I dunno why but when Jin Guk opened his hand to look at the pendant that Sam Dong tossed to him, in my mind I screamed, "Owner found!"

I really think Jin Guk will be K. (Also, I am reminded of him asking Oh Hyuk in an earlier episode if he is going to be as famous as Michael Jackson.)
