Dream High: Episode 15

I liked Hye-mi from the start, despite her surly behavior, but now I LOVE her, and totally because of her surly ‘tude. Is it me, or did she transform into someone awesome, right under our noses? In this episode she faces not one, but two dilemmas: classical or pop, and Hottie No.1 vs. Hottie No.2. Sigh. It’s tough being a girl.

EPISODE 15 RECAP

Hye-mi realizes that she’s running towards Sam-dong…which means she LUUUUURVES him! To make matters worse, he’s heading straight for her with Jin-gook by his side, so she ducks behind a door to hide from them, because she’s adorably new to feelings.

She leans her head against the wall, groaning to herself that she’s crazy: “What are you going to do now? Crazy, crazy, crazy.” Aw. I love this side of Hye-mi.

The kids sign their contracts with White Entertainment, and the teachers supervise the proceedings. Oh-hyuk clocks Principal Shi glaring at him like the crook who stole his daughter, and he leans over to ask Jin-man why the principal’s got laser beams aimed at him.

Jin-man: “I don’t know. Don’t speak to me.” Hahaha. And aw, poor heartbroken Jin-man. The tidal wave of destruction one public display of affection can cause.

The students laugh at Doo-shik’s cheesy words about making their dreams come true together, until Jin-gook points out that it’s Oh-hyuk’s M.O., and he hides his face in embarrassment. I love how realistic that is—when I was a teenager, cheese was the plague.

Outside, Jin-gook and Sam-dong congratulate each other on their contracts, and Sam-dong declares that now he’s pretty sure that he’s up to snuff, to battle it out for Hye-mi’s heart. He asks Jin-gook if he’s up for the challenge, asks if he’s confident he’ll win. Jin-gook says he’s not, actually, and asks if Sam-dong is confident in winning.

Sam-dong: “No, I’m not. Now that I think about going up against you, you’re bigger than me. And possibly better looking. And you gave up your dream to protect someone else, so it’s possible you’re cool too. I should’ve picked someone easier to beat. Truthfully, I’m a little scared.”

Gah, I love their competitive bonding. Also, he’s not better looking. That’s just your insecurity talking, Sam-dong. What I love about his character is that he’s totally old-fashioned. He’s alerting his opponent that he’s going for it, like a gentleman.

Every battle’s got its code of ethics, and this one’s delightfully friendly, while still being tense. It’s the kind of code between two guys who might share some friendly underwear from time to time. Also, confirmation: Jin-gook still has the K pendant.

The girl in question is battling it out on her own, with little imaginary Angel Jin-gook on one shoulder, and Devil Sam-dong on the other. LOL.

Cracks me up that Jin-gook is the angel, because despite being the traditional bad boy, he’s always been the good one to her. And Sam-dong, despite being the good country boy, is the devil to Hye-mi, because he’s made her face tough challenges, and forced her to (gasp) feel feelings. Pwahaha. What a great reversal.

She mulls it over until Devil Sam-dong starts flying Cupid’s hearts at her (HA) and she shakes them both away.

Sam-dong sees from across the way and calls out to her, bringing her out of her reverie…and way too close to facing reality. So she bolts like a rabbit. And Sam-dong, bless his heart, just chases after her because he doesn’t know why she’s running away.

He finally catches up and cuts her off, and asks why she’s running away from him. Hye-mi: “I’m not running away. I’m…exercising.” Is it just me or is this girl getting funnier?

Sam-dong proudly shows her the contract and she says congratulations in her distraction, not even making eye contact. He’s like, this is the face of someone congratulating? And Hye-mi gets to repeat one of my favorite lines: “This IS my congratulations face.”

Sam-dong starts to ask her if she still worries about him or feels sorry for him, but before she can answer, she gets a call from her sister Hye-sung: Dad’s back!

Father of the Year was too busy being Crown Prince Whozit, or running away from debt collectors, what have you, and only now shows up at the house. He goes livid the moment he lays eyes on Oh-hyuk (the guy his wife left him for, as you’ll recall), and takes it out on his side-view mirror.

Once inside, he presents Oh-hyuk and his sister with an envelope of money, clenching his teeth while thanking them for taking care of his girls. When asked if that’s the face of someone who’s thankful, he answers, “This IS my thankful face.” It runs in the family!

Hye-mi comes home and Dad tries to greet her with a hug (do you even know your daughter?), and she responds by hitting him tearfully. He promises her that this time he’s gotten back on his feet, and they can all be together…in America.

Oh crap. Panic sets in over the two boys, who’ve been quietly happy for Hye-mi, until now. Dad says they’ll get everything ready for the move in a week, and they can stay at a hotel in the meantime. Hye-mi doesn’t want to just up and leave to a hotel so suddenly, and Oh-hyuk agrees that they can stay, since there’re so many rooms…

Dad goes over to Sam-dong and Jin-gook’s room, where they both hastily make their beds and in unison: “You can sleep here, sir.” Ha. Dad’s less concerned with where he’s going to sleep, than with what kind of relationship they have with his daughter.

They put him at ease by saying they’re just all friends from the same class, and Dad makes it clear that Hye-mi is Julliard-bound, as in destined for better things, so back off. He then chooses Sam-dong’s bed (!) and then complains about the mattress springs like a little princess.

The boys note that Hye-mi is a cookie-cutout of her dad, right down to the sneer and the prickly demeanor. Heh. I love that they can make fun of her truthfully, even though they’re competing for her affections.

Jin-gook runs into Hye-mi on the staircase, and asks if she’s really going to America. She says with a smile that she’s going, of course, because Dad’s here, and Julliard was always her dream anyway. But when she turns her back, her face betrays conflict.

Jin-gook offers her congratulations, though it’s half-hearted. And Hye-mi accepts his handshake a little too eagerly, as if convincing herself that it’s something to be congratulated for.

In her room, she ponders over her two dreams, now offering up a choice that she never had before. Sam-dong comes to her door, full of fear and anticipation.

Sam-dong: Can’t you…not go?

Ack! Ack! **thud**

He leans against her door, while she leans against it on the other side, and he asks what he’s supposed to do if she leaves now.

In the middle of the night, Dad wakes up in stealth mode, and takes the girls out of the house, suitcases in tow. They stay the night at a sauna, and the girls wonder what they’re doing there, if Dad’s really on the up and up.

Turns out Shady Daddy isn’t quite so on the level. He bolted from the house because he knew that Ma Doo-shik would find him there and demand repayment. Hye-mi rolls her eyes at her errant father, realizing that nothing’s actually changed. She asks why he really came back.

He tells her that it’s because he was worried she’d give up on her dream (of studying classical music) and was sincere about starting over in the States. He takes her phone away and tells them not to tell anyone where they are, so that they can slip away quietly in a week.

At school, Sam-dong and Jin-gook worry that Hye-mi will just leave the country like this, and Sam-dong decides he has to find her. Jin-gook asks if he has any way of stopping her. Sam-dong: “I don’t…but if I don’t find her, I won’t be able to breathe.” Kid, are you TRYING to kill me?

They split up to look for her, and Hye-mi wanders the streets to clear her head. She ends up in front of school, debating whether or not to go in. And it’s not either of the boys, but Baek-hee who finds her first. She takes her inside by the hand, having come full circle from their first steps into Kirin together.

Kyung-jin and Oh-hyuk run into each other in an explosion of awkward, and when she tries to bring up the hug from the other day, he makes the mistake of telling her that he won’t read anything into it, since it didn’t mean anything. Oh, boys. She just agrees, deflated.

When Doo-shik sneaks up behind her, she jumps into Oh-hyuk’s arms yet again, but they refuse to acknowledge the giant pink elephant in the room. Jin-man joins them as they discuss the new song that Doo-shik has acquired for the group.

It’s not really a song so much as a bass line, but then Oh-hyuk adds a melody on top of it. Jin-man’s jaw drops: “Are you a genius?” Heh. Oh-hyuk confesses that Sam-dong’s the genius, since it’s a song he wrote, re-titled “Dream High.” (The show’s title track.)

Everyone thinks that it’s a good song and a good name for the group, while Jin-man has other ideas. He’s prepared for the group-naming session, you see. Jin-man: “ALBATROS!” Ignore, ignore.

Jin-man: “Ok, ok, I have another: R2D2!” I don’t know what’s funnier—the fact that he thinks these are cool names, or the motions he’s got accompanying them. He finally throws a tantrum that nobody listens to him, harrumph, but then his ego shoots right back up when he’s offered the role of songwriter. Cue triumphant Star Wars music.

They’re interrupted when Dad comes rushing in to grab Oh-hyuk by the collar and demand his daughter’s whereabouts. He totally outs Oh-hyuk for seducing away his wife—AWK-ward—and blames him thinking he’s stashed Hye-mi somewhere.

Hye-mi comes running up to break up the fight, which is when Doo-shik realizes who it is, with a gleeful smile. They all calm down to discuss the matter, and Dad finds out that Hye-mi signed with Doo-shik in order to repay his debts. Yeah, catch up, Deadbeat Dad.

He tries to tell her not to worry about the debt, but she says it’ll be fine if she just debuts. That’s when Oh-hyuk steps in, like a real father figure, and reassures her that the debt doesn’t matter. His house has already been leveraged as collateral, and she needn’t worry, and he tells her to think carefully about what she really wants, and not to debut to pay a debt.

She looks up at Oh-hyuk, finally put at ease, and says she’ll think about it. Yay. In your face, Daddy Dearest. Takes more to be a dad than DNA.

Meanwhile, Kyung-jin reels at the news that her crush could be the kind of man to seduce a married woman. Jin-man takes the opportunity to tell her that eight years ago (the time of the supposed affair) is right around the time they were supposed to debut together, but Oh-hyuk ditched him. He decides that Oh-hyuk might have been the bad guy back then. Jin-man: “It’s possible he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing!” Yeah, a real wolf.

I love that Jin-man thinks he’s competing for Kyung-jin’s affections, when it’s really Oh-hyuk that he loves.

Hye-mi weighs her decision as she wanders the streets, playing eeny-meeny-miny-moe at each crosswalk, and frustrated that Fate isn’t helping her decide. Jin-gook finds her lost in thought, and she asks him what she’s supposed to do, since neither of them is one hundred percent.

Jin-gook tells her that if one choice were a hundred, it wouldn’t be a choice, but an answer. It’s because they’re fifty-fifty that it’s a choice, and she should weigh it carefully. He adds that once she chooses, not to look back, and turn that fifty into a hundred, to prove to herself that she made the right choice.

She wonders if he’s not going to tell her not to go, but he says she’s not the type to listen to other people anyway. She smiles, but her thoughts drift to Sam-dong and she walks away lost in thought again.

Jason does a promotional soundbite for an idol talk show, and he sweetly suggests the other members of Dream High for interviews. The PD doesn’t bite at the mention of Jin-gook or Baek-hee, thinking that it’s still too soon, and even makes the dig that people say Baek-hee seduced the president.

Oh, so the TEENAGER seduced the SLIMY BASTARD? Gah, sometimes I hate people. But I love Show for being real about it. Jason snaps at him that it’s not like that, but sees that they’ve got an uphill battle ahead. He suggests Pil-sook, and scores her a spot.

On the day of her interview, Jason watches from behind the camera, adorably cheering her on. He takes a look at the interview questions, and sees that changes have been made. His face falls, as he realizes he’s walked her straight into the lion’s den.

The interviewer starts out naming all her talents, and then adds her biggest talent of all: transformation, as he takes out a giant picture of her from a year ago. Pil-sook panics for a second, her voice wavering…but then she pulls it together and makes light of it, with jokes. Jason breathes a sigh of relief.

She closes the segment with a song that she clearly wrote about her favorite Chipmunk.

Eyes that only look at me
A nose like a sculpture
Lovable lips
Skin like milk and
A face that’s curious about something
Chic words

My friends think
I’m delusional
But I knew
Your heart
Even when you’re coy
I know
You can fool a ghost
But you can’t fool me

Step by step
Nervous footsteps
With excitement

Today with a heart
As big as this
Confess
Your dream

After the interview, Jason tells her that the PD found old pictures of her from her homepage, and suggests she take them down. She sighs that she probably should, but confesses that it makes her sad to do so.

She knows that the world will ridicule the Pil-sook of a year ago, and she’s scared that she’ll come to hate her too. Pil-sook: “I was happy with myself back then.” Aw, I love her. Jason tells her that she’s not the only one who was happy with who she was a year ago, and…wait for it…he takes out his phone.

YES! She’s shocked to find pictures of herself. “It’s…pictures of me?” Jason: “Who did you think was in here?” Pil-sook reminds him of his beloved I-miss-you-I-love-you-Julie, and of course, he waits till NOW to tell her: she’s his sister. Knew it.

She turns to keep walking, but he pulls her close. Omo! She immediately reads the sitch and shuts her eyes in a panic, making me die. Jason laughs to himself, and then goes in for a kiss…on the doll who’s hitching a piggyback ride on Pil-sook’s back.

She actually huffs in frustration, as he says he couldn’t help it…the doll was so cute. “But why did you close your eyes? What were you expecting?” Cheeky bastard. She turns to walk away in embarrassment, but he grabs her back for another go. Aaaah! Stop yo-yo-ing her…my heart can’t take it!

He leans in close, and kisses her sweetly on the nose. But she’s had enough of this coyness, and grabs him for a real kiss. YAY! I didn’t think it was possible to love her even more. Gah, they are so cute I can’t stand it!

It’s now one day before Hye-mi is scheduled to leave, and she confronts Oh-hyuk at school. She asks him to tell her the truth about her mom. She admits to hating him in the beginning, but now she doesn’t (tantamount to a declaration of love, from Hye-mi) and adds that he’s helped her become who she is now. Aw.

He finally breaks and tells her the truth—that her mom only ever loved one person her whole life, and married him. But one day Oh-hyuk crossed paths with her…at the hospital. When her surgery was unsuccessful, she had asked Oh-hyuk to make her into the bad wife in her family’s eyes, so that they wouldn’t live with her death as a burden. So he did, because he had loved her once.

Um, okay. That’s a little makjang for my taste (How is adulterer and abandoner better than sick and dying?? One’s a burden and the other’s not?? Hello!), but at least it sufficiently clears up the backstory. I never assumed that Oh-hyuk actually seduced Hye-mi’s mom, but this is more than a little nuts. I guess Hye-mi gets her flair for the dramatic from her mom’s side? Yeesh.

Kyung-jin overhears their conversation, crying in empathy and relief, realizing now what Oh-hyuk meant about his heart belonging to another. Principal Shi comes up to warn her of the rumor that Oh-hyuk is a married-womanizer, but Kyung-jin just says that she knows…and it made her fall even harder. Heh.

At home, Sam-dong and Jin-gook both sit on the edge of their beds, waiting for Hye-mi’s decision. Sam-dong finally asks Jin-gook to stop her:

Sam-dong: I can’t, but you might be able to. Can’t you…stop Hye-mi from going? I don’t care if she listens to you and doesn’t listen to me. If you’re in her heart and not me…it doesn’t matter. If you can stop her…then try.

Heartbreaking. That’s not the kind of thing Sam-dong would be willing to say in any other circumstance, but he’s that desperate for her to stay. Oh, puppy. Jin-gook tells him that it’s not something he can hold her back from, and he couldn’t do it even if he wanted.

Hye-mi watches her finished audition clip for EMG, where she narrates the journey she’s been on thus far, from studying classical music and thinking that popular music was third-rate trash.

Hye-mi: But in the past year, through popular music, I was able to cheer somebody on [“Genie”], I was able to make somebody happy [Jin-gook’s birthday song], and I came to find out that I could encourage someone too [“Goose’s Dream” to Baek-hee]. When I look back to when I ridiculed popular music, I realize that I was the prejudiced, third-rate one. I think in the last year, I’ve barely made it out of being third-rate. And that I have the capacity to become first-rate.

She takes out the K pendant, now in her possession (Tricksy, that pendant. They’re exchanging it offscreen now!) and weighs her decision. The next morning, they pack and wait outside for the airport shuttle, when Hye-mi takes out the pendant again, and makes her decision.

Meanwhile, Sam-dong sits outside the house, clutching Hye-mi’s cell phone charm, unable to face her leaving. He finally takes off running, but he’s too late to stop her. He runs after the bus, screaming, “Don’t go! Don’t go!”

He can’t catch up, and he crumples to the ground on his knees, crying for her not to go. He just cries, thinking he’s lost her forever…when she appears behind him.

She catches her breath, saying she didn’t get on the bus, and called out to him to stop running, but he didn’t hear her. He still can’t hear her now, reeling from the shock. She takes his face in her hands and says it again: “I’m NOOOOT GOOOOING.”

He cries again, this time overwhelmed with joy, and grabs her in a hug. Eeee! This time she’s caught off guard, and you know what happens when she’s confronted with feelings…Robot Hye-mi freezes in his arms.

I’m TOTALLY not squeeing right now. That’s not me, I swear.

Back at the bus stop, Dad is still in disbelief over Hye-mi’s declaration, insisting that Oh-hyuk did something to make her say she’s staying. They try to convince him that this is really her dream now, and that it’s a real possibility. Hye-mi tells him that she’ll show him onstage: if she can stand up on stage in one month’s time, it’ll prove to him AND to herself that this is a viable dream.

To that end, the group starts practicing for their debut, and make their first album. Kyung-jin has an adorable moment when she finds out that she’s thanked on the album, for the first time ever. Aw.

Doo-shik makes the rounds to the studios to try and get them onstage, but he’s faced with the harsh truth: Get rid of Jin-gook and Baek-hee, or Dream High will never see the light of day. Dun, dun!

COMMENTS

This show is frickin’ genius. Every episode, it focuses on each character, and the closer we get to the finale, it only makes us sure of one thing: any and all of them could be K. I agree that Baek-hee had a phenomenal storyline in the last episode and it made her a prime candidate to rise from the ashes and become K. I certainly would cheer her on with all my heart if it were her.

I don’t think it’s a done deal though, since what the last episode did was just set her up to be one of the contenders, just as much as Sam-dong and Jin-gook have been set up from the beginning. Now Hye-mi joins the ranks with her own battle faced.

Not that I’m putting my money on Hye-mi. My heart’s still with Sam-dong for K, though at this point it wouldn’t kill me if he wasn’t, because he GOT THE GIRL(!) I think it matters less now that Dream High has formed as a group, and we’re more concerned with their immediate struggle and success, rather than the far-off super-stardom that awaits in the distant future.

Oh, who am I kidding. It’s KILLING me.

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE for forever. And that's just from the recap. Thank you so much JB!

Favorite line from the recap: "I love that Jin-man thinks he’s competing for Kyung-jin’s affections, when it’s really Oh-hyuk that he loves." LOL SO TRUE.

I don't know what I'm gonna do after next week. With no more What's Up or Poseidon to look forward to, I foresee a long dark period of no dramas until something fun comes up. Oh well - I guess I can finally watch My Name Is Kim Sam Soon. Hyun Bin FTW!

thank you girlfriday for the recap!

I'm glad they pressed on this sexual assault issue to really hammer it in how unfair and unjust society is to victims.

I'm really excited to find out what will happen in the final episode! Maybe these kids will take it back to performing on the streets and gain popularity that way.

I really want Samdong and Jin-gook to be a couple! They're so great together!

Ditto. I don't think, or at least I hope not, the Show will drop the sexual assault issue. Episode 15 seems to be setting up for some sort of a climax. And it seems and I hope the Show will not take a cynical cop out but offer an interesting critique, vision, and challenge to its viewership.

I love that this drama isn't afraid to critique popular culture for the unjust treatment of victims and stars. I loved when Pilsuk pondered if she should actually be guilty of her past when she was actually happy. We laugh at stars' pasts and their appearances back then and we assume that they should be ashamed when really, it's all in the past and they don't have to be ashamed.

I LOVE this show!

I'm happy the show focuses on everyone and their dreams and relationships.

It doesnt focus on a simple love triangle and the world is only about those two. It has elements of romance, yet each episode has built so much more in friendship above all else. And that the love between everyone isn't in one form (ie. romance) but in family and friendship. And even though there is a person someone has strong romantic affection for, they also put their friends first too.

Big applauds for being in it's 15th episode and no time jump. It's highschoolers facing teenage problems while dealing with big dreams and turning it into reality. Almost like God of Study.

I'm also betting K wont be revealed at all. It's one of those stories where the ending will be left to the viewer's imagination to decide.

Oh-hyuk's past with Hye-mi's mom was a bit makjangish, but this wouldn't be a Kdrama without it.

K won't be revealed? PD/scriptwriters would have hell to pay from viewers, lols.

I'm pretty sure K will be revealed since Dream High doesn't deviate too much from what's expected and given the how the drama's progressed, every plot conflict/episode has always been dealt with awesomely in a way that leaves me feeling satisfied, you know?

oh btw, anyone catch that the beats for 'Dream High' was composed by "Amsa-dong Cat"...Actually they mentioned it the first time "Love High" was played in the show during the Japan episode. Haha. They totally spoofed that name since there's a producer called Shinsadong Tiger.

Ok, Hye-mi´s dad, Canada has telephones too! 1 year! It took you one year and you didn’t talk to your daughters! Also, the mom didn’t make the best decision. Oh-hyuk, please, adopt Hye-mi. Talking about her, I love her too.

I screamed in fury when they were saying that Baek-hee seduced the president (a.k.a Abort from nature) I wanted to hit someone. The horrible thing is that is true they think like that, i´ve heard that rapists said that to their “defense”. That´s just stupid. Rapists want to submit their victim, they want control (or that´s what my psicology teacher said). But its good that the drama include the theme.

Oh, The Milky Couple´s kiss. First, I thought “What? I want to see it!” but the sole fact that Pil-sook was the one who started it, make me squeal. Cute, cute, cute. Love, love love.

Hm, you already wrote everything I feel and think about Sam-dong, so:

Thank you for the recap!

Are you sure you watched that bus stop scene at all? Because frankly, when SD& HM got there, HM wasn't looking, much less smiling at JG. She was looking at her father and she smiled (at her father) only after he agreed to stay for one month.

I watched it too and Hyemi was definitely not looking/smiling at Jingook.

Watch the first part. The fact that she thought of Sam-dong as the devil, the fact that she was "exercising" away from him, plus they were playing the music that they always play when love is in the air.

K-dramas always mix up the music to confuse us. I am going by the RELATIONSHIP she already has with Jin-gook. It is on a HIGHER plane than the one she has with Sam-dong!!! This reminds me of Sungkyunkwan Scandal when lots of people thought the girl would go with the red bandit.

The HOT actors do not always get the girl!!!

"K-dramas always mix up the music to confuse us."
- Really? I wasn't confused at all when they're using it in Dream High.

"the RELATIONSHIP...with Jin-gook..is on a HIGHER plane.."
- okaaaaay...**eye-roll** what.e.ver.

"..Sungkyunkwan Scandal when lots of people thought the girl would go with the red bandit"
- no we didn't. I'm team Moony but I never thought that he would get the girl at all. I never had any illusions about that. And I wasn't in denial when Yoon-hee & Sun-joon got together.

"The HOT actors do not always get the girl"
- so on one hand you're saying that Micky Yoochun isn't hot (DBSK fans will disagree) and on the other hand, you're saying that Taecyeon isn't hot too?

rawr -- want too keep taecyon for myself or keep him for later -- go hye sung!

I think the writers are doing a wonderful job of creating interest in this drama. Yes, Micky Yoochun is hot. I just felt that more people like Yoo Ah-in because he is a better and more seasoned actor, as well as having the animal magnetism much like BOTH fellows in "Dream High."

I am simply saying that Sam-dong and Hye-mi have not had a relationship like the one with her and Jin-gook. Jin-gook was there when she was not on her best behavior and he still liked her. He was there all along with her friendship/rivalry with Baek-hee. Where was Sam-dong during all of this? She has a fondness and friendship with Sam-dong which started out being cultivated because of her ambition. It then became more interesting when he took the fall for her. Much of her feelings toward him are sympathetic, though.

I am not trying to pick a fight. This is how I see it, sorry.

As far as the music goes. I am meaning it in general. The "love" tunes are not always specific to the true couple. I do not want to rewind all the dramas I have watched to prove this. Although the music is very important to me, I have not cataloged all of its tunes with scenes so far.

0

totally agreed with you Dominic , I think that Phyllis is in lala land.. you know sometime you want things so badly to happen that you start seeing things that aren't really there..

There were so many hints in this ep- moving HM's feeling towards SD- even JG gets it.

@Phyllis- you got to be kidding me- JG/HM's relationship is on a higher plane. I think that maybe you just skipped out on watching the sammi parts and went to the JG/HM parts.. because SAMMI has been thru alot together for many many eps.

0

Hi there, I think I'm a relatively neutral shipper. Your comments other than coming off sounding bias as if you are selective viewing such as skipping SamDong scenes in favour of JinGuk, also makes JinGuk-HyeMi shippers look bad and in denial.

You can't say one relationship is above the other. JinGuk-HyeMi bonded over their family problems. He was rejected by his father and she was rejected by her mother. He gave her a shoulder to cry and in turn he leaned on her.
SamDong was there too. The SamDong-HyeMi development was more recent. While JinGuk was in K (200 days) SamDong-HyeMi bonded over their dreams. When she felt betrayed by JinGuk SamDong was the one who was there. He was also there during the BaekHee. She even quoted his words about "living in hell" to BaekHee.

She has a fondness and friendship with Sam-dong which started out being cultivated because of her ambition. It then became more interesting when he took the fall for her. Much of her feelings toward him are sympathetic, though.
Also he was there for her BEFORE the flower pot incident remember the manga drawing? He created a manga about her just to cheer her up, drew over the negative graffiti of her, took the eat beating aimed at her?
I think you are missing lots of details from episode 4-15. Episode 13 made it CRYSTAL clear her feels for him are not out of pity because his illness is not HyeMi's fault.

I am not even going to comment on you're opinion of the “love” tunes. I cannot understand where you are getting those impressions. The JinGuk-HyeMi Ferris wheel kiss was not only beautiful but excellently executed.

@Dominic excellent answer!

Better yet, rewatch the scene where JinGuk asks HyeSung who she prefers-someone who is always there by your side or someone who is busy.
JinGuk himself acknowledge that SamDong has been there for HyeMi more than him. If JinGuk can see it why can't his fans? Lmfao

0

If Jin-gook & Hye-mi's relationship is in a higher plane, then should I say the same for Ji-hoo & Jan-di, Shin-woo & Mi-nam/Mi-nyeo, Jung-in & Mae-ri...need I go on? Someone commented here or somewhere else that this show is not all about what/who you're fated to be (with), it's about the choices that you make.

Well it's almost the end of the drama and there has been no type of developement with the SD/JG relationship- it has come to the point that she has to question who she loves- which basically means that she really doesn't love JG. So face the facts- if your feelings are starting to drift -you aren't in love.

I'm enjoying every second of this show now. I'm still banking on the whole group being K (as in Dream High Group = K Group). I don't know, maybe I'm just dreaming. Anyways, I think I'll miss a lot of these characters, from Milky Couple, to Robo-Hyemi, to Ohyhyuk and his "girl" who was just as Robotic as Hyemi, Samdong the cute, to positive and upbeat Taec, President/Mobster Dooshik, and one of my favorite characters being Jinman - the goofy, offbeat, Terminator and Star Wars eccentric.

I looooooved this episode! It breaks my heart every time I see Sam Dong crying, but I've got to say, he's such a pretty crier. Lol! I loved the part where they were practicing dancing and Hye-Mi's dad comes and takes her away, and then her little sister grabs Jin-Guk's hand, but when Sam-Dong offers his as well she just knocks it aside. She's so cute! She has no problem showing who she prefers between the two. I also like the part during the bloopers where Teacyeon and Kim Soo Hyun were practicing their Latin dance. I was laughing so hard! I re-watched that like 20 times!

The Monday after next I KNOW is going to be the worst case of the Mondays ever. CRYING SO HARD. :'(

Pity party aside, SAMMI omg. Finally. That is all I have to say.

i love the storyline for dream high, there's not much love story like other k-dramas. there r so many other storylines to follow. the teacher's problems, their dreams, showcases, milky couple (not complaining ^^), etc.. though there r some poor directing n editing, but i love every moment of it.. it's a different kind of drama, even my mom loves it.. <3 <3

Ok my 2 cents.
I was going to feel sorry for JG too, thinking "aw he loved HM first, they have a history (albeit 1 day when they were about 10yrs old)" but then I got to thinking, the reason he fell so hard for HM was because he had no love in his life. No one to reciprocate his affection.
Now the JG and his Daddy are on good terms, it's ok because JG can get the love that he was craving, even at 10yrs old.
I'm liking the relationship between JG and Daddy now. Misunderstandings have been laid to rest. Daddy has come out to say that JG is his blood and he's proud of him (paraphrasing here) and he's giving JG a chance. It's awesome.

i loved and HATED this episode.

DAMN THOSE WRITERS!

after convincing us in 13 episodes that GookMi was totally going to happen, they BROKE my GookMi heart and i'm left to pick up the little pieces strewn everywhere!

HOW ON EARTH COULD JINGUK HAVE LOST TO SAMDONG?! taecyeon is 10000000000% hotter than KSH (though i love him as well) and whenever Jinguk and Hyemi are on screen, there's fireworks!

BUT THE WRITERS HAVE THWARTED ME!

ahmagawd in ep 14 when Hyemi realizes that she loved SamDong, i literally SCREAMED at my computer screen because i was THAT upset! Jinguk and Hyemi!!!!!!!!! they kissed!!!!!!!!!!!!! argh i'm so upset!!!!!!!!!! if only the writers had kept Jinguk and Hyemi to the very end, Dream High would've sealed its faith as the one of the best dramas in my book. BUT NOW. after breaking Hyemi and Jinguk up (its obvious, taecyeon's my bias), NO MORE!!!!!! NO MORE NO MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

please Jinguk and Hyemi forever :D

oh and since Sammi is happening, sob sob :'(, i think Jinguk will be K. go get that Grammy and show Hyemi what she missed out on!!!!!!!!!!!

Required fields are marked *

Awww. I though Jinguk and Hyemi were super cute in the beginning as well. And even though there were hints in setting up for the Samdong/Hyemi couple since the very beginning, it was also obvious the script wanted us to split in the shipping.

Also, I figured KSH had to have a more lead role since he's the only (?) contribution from KEYEAST.

And believe me I adore Taecyeon (although 2PM bias is Wooyoung/Jay), but he already got a singing spotlight showcased earlier in the drama, right?

IMO, I think the drama's setting it up for Hye Mi to be Singer K, especially after that fatherly moment with Oh Hyuk. Baek Hee is the obvious distracter set up by the writers and as GF mentioned in the recap, it's true Samdong doesn't *have* to be Singer K since he's got Hyemi.

Oh, no! MiGook shippers are in also denial like Hye-mi at the start! Hints have been dropped throughout the show that's why SamMi shippers held on to the hope that Sam-dong will get the girl. Don't lose heart!! Like I said on a previous thread. Hye-mi and Jin-gook have a deeper and more significant relationship. They understand each other and have awesome respect for each other. She gave Sam-dong the pendant as a consolation prize. When she first realized who she was going to talk to about her success, I know it was Jin-gook. She always talks to him about relevant and personal things.

I really don't want to participate in the shipping wars because I think GookMi is a nice pairing even though I personally ship SamMi... but the phrases listed above? It makes GookMi sound like Harry/Hermione, and I think we're all fairly aware how that pairing ended up.

(Which leads me to remember Harry telling Ron in the last book that he loved Hermione "like a sister"... maybe Jin-gook will love Hye-mi like a sister, too, when he marries Hye-sung when Hye-sung is legal and Hye-mi becomes his sister-in-law....)

@Phyllis - How funny- "They understand each other and have awesome respect for each other"- The main understanding that they together really have is just the being abandon by your parent part,

If JG was so understanding than why did he out HM with the pendant in front of everyone that hated her instead of waiting until they were alone.
It was SAM DONG- the one that was understanding on why she had held onto the pendant, he had to explain to JG about why she had the pendant.

You seriously need to re watch cause you been skipping parts, sam dong had been there for hye mi ever since he came - he might not have been like BAM in your face but he was there by her side. don't get me wrong JG is a good guy but don't try to make it seem like he better than SAM DONG- cause for all of us that has watch dream high we pick SD for a reason and it's just not because he DAMN HOT!

LOL at the arguing!

i SERIOUSLY thought that GookMi was going to happen because Jin Gook and Hyemi seem to have more chemistry together. don't get me wrong, i love Sam Dong as well, but he's just not ALL THAT for me.

when Sam Dong witnessed the kiss between Jin Gook and HyeMi, i felt REALLY BAD for him and cried buckets because i could sort of relate to his pain, and i DO like the SamMi pairing, i just PREFER GookMi.

i'm not trying to reason with all of you guys but really... Jin Gook and Hye Mi has fireworks, and i think that SamMi is more Harry/Hermione compared to GookMi. btw, Jin Gook is understanding, but he does practise tough love. he outed HyeMi with the pendant even though she'd be upset because he knew that she's better than that and wanted to her to stop relying on the pendant. in the earlier episodes i used to think SamDong was a bit wishy-washy because he agreed with EVERYTHING HyeMi said.

haha maybe i just like my men strong :) or maybe i just love taecyeon a bit too much. obsessed is a better word, LOL ;)

SIGH at the end of the day i must face the fact that GookMi ain't happening. and i shall start picking up the pieces of my shattered heart by STOP LISTENING TO THE OST (If by JYP is awesome!). i can't seem to get over GookMi not happening :( i'm happy for SamDong but... AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH JIN GOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i shall now go and continue to wallow in my misery :(

"Jin Gook is understanding, but he does practise tough love. he outed HyeMi with the pendant even though she’d be upset because he knew that she’s better than that and wanted to her to stop relying on the pendant."

I am a sammi lover but yes I do love Jingook too, just that sammi's chemistry is way better for me. Yes I understand that he wanted her to stop relying on the pendant- but really though he could have pulled her aside to tell her wassup instead of outing her in front of everyone especially when she was already being bully by everyone else. Which just caused everyone to think she stolen the pedant. And yes I do know what tough love is.
But if you watch that ep- Samdong had to tell him why she was holding onto the pedant because Jingook thought she was holding on to it for a whole different reason and you could see that Jingook than felt remorseful. So I do understand what Jingook was trying to do, he was trying to do the right thing by giving
bh's pendant back to her, but I believe that Samdong had understood Hyemi feeling alot better.

But owell GookMi shipper well see it their own way and Sammi shipper will see it our own way.

"My heart’s still with Sam-dong for K, though at this point it wouldn’t kill me if he wasn’t, because he GOT THE GIRL(!)" This episode didn't move me as much as the least 2 but I did like it.

I thought the winners of this episode were....

...drum I'll please...

....Pil-Sook and Teacher Kang.

Pil-Sook for being so able to handle the interview, love herself at whatever her weight is, and grab Jason for a real kiss! Go Pil-Sook!

Teacher Kang is just awesome as a teacher and a father figure. How he thinks of others rather than his own image is just awesome.

I didn't like Teacher Shin running stupidly after she got shocked with the news of Kang's 'adultery'. I didn't think it was cute at all. To me it was a big minus for her character.

I didn't like Sam-Dong being so wussy. He was like 'I can't live without you so you have to stay.' It didn't appeal to me at all. It made him seem pathetic to me and in need of help as if he couldn't stand on his own two feet at any time and needed mothering all the way. Sorry Sam-Dong I know you're just a kid but sometimes you need to be able to bring stuff to the table...

On the other hand Jin-Guk was like all for Hye-Mi going for her dream, telling her to give her choice 100% once her decision was made so she could make it a sucess. He was ready to support her whatever decision she chose. Now that's love for you.

But hey, each to his/her own.

it wasn't implied that she has stayed because of samdong or anyone else, **but the fact is, samdong has been always on her mind. the mention of samdong's name (when oh-hyuk asks why the boy isn't sending hyemi and her family off) definitely does something because that is when it clicks in her head that she's made up her decision to be debut...
i believe she then immediately actually runs and searches for him to tell him that she's not gonna leave. doesn't that tell something?

to each her/his own, but these characters are teenagers. being a teenager is being reckless and living 'in-the-moment'. that's samdong for you.

if i were hyemi, i would totally go for samdong. you may think that 'he isn't the same level with her mentally', but HE is the one who helped her grow the most. he is the one who is always by her side, through her ups and downs. i would want someone i can rely to, someone who sees me as a person so important to him (like how hyemi is to samdong).

but i do agree that that chasing-the-bus scene was a little too dramatic lol, but i think that actually seals the deal between the pair. it shows that hyemi seems to be more important to samdong than jingguk (MY opinion- the latter doesn't even cry. if she means THAT much, he should at least shed a tear.. it's as if jingguk doesn't try.) and she (supposedly) searching for him to tell the news... :)

I so agree with adj. But i like seeing samdong cry, it makes him more human :P Although it tears me apart seeing him suffer

0

Jingook's love was kind of lukewarm :i mean the guy shed more tears for his father than the girl and when she vanished he was already admitting his defeat before even trying to do something about it

0

I'm with you adj. What I like most about Sam Dong+Hye Mi is that they grew up together..they developed as people, singers and teenagers together. Maybe according to some they are not on the same mentality...but they helped each other grow and reach the same level now.

And that's what makes me a Sam Dong shipper at the end of the day even though it was a really close call. I'm a major sucker for the boy falling for you from childhood and remember the meeting. This drama really tested my two ideals against each other ><"

Jinmi shipper still in denial. Hahah give him a break, SamD has changed. He doesn't even chase after HM anymore since that kiss with JG. It's actually HM chasing SamD now. And HM is not like how she used to be. She changed for the better & she now realizes whos always been there for her, come on even JG knows she's happier with SamD.

Just my opinion.

not at the same same level? awww...in denial much? The girl basically quoted HIS WORDS to BH after the winning.

They have always been growing with each other from the start. Dunno whatcha talking about, if anything they are always on the same level.

And why is wussy for him to cry? So everyone who cries is a wuss to you now? He's in high school for god's sake. Not everyone can stay quiet and mature like dear Jin Gook.

I have noticed your comment dear friend, nothing positive at all regarding Sammi. Why don't you just stay at your own blog and blabber about your hate towards SD? And see if you get the same response?

And I will say the same words that SD and HM used to you: "A person who can't clap for another person's winning/happiness, their mind will be in hell."

I'm not a Jinguk-Hyemi shipper and I totally agree that Kim Soo Hyun is cute but the character of Samdong is different altogether. I'm trying to be objective. I liked Samdong at the start, when he was a country bumpkin because he was the epitome of earnesty and that earned him lots of brownie points from the ladies but I thought the way he went around following Hyemi like 'a sad puppy' was really pathetic.

Then he stood up for himself after the whole deaf/kiss incident and I thought that was his most charming moment. Even Samdong knew that himself. He thought he was pathetic. In fact, he was more angry with himself than Hyemi. It was someone he was proud of. But the whole bus, sobbing himself to death incident just took him back to square one.

I've no issue with men crying (in fact, i think that's healthy) but the way he went about it, begging for her to stay was just well...I've said enough.

Also, I have to agree with all the SAMMI shippers that Hyemi does seem to matter a lot more to SD than JG.

0

@ charm, lol i agree with you... beside if sam dong is a wussy for crying.. what about all the time that JG cried...

0

@L: I agree with you, especially on what you said in the second paragraph. that bus-chasing scene, on its own, was great imo; it was so raw and so emotionally charged that i found myself crying along with the characters. but when you put it back to the big picture, it starts to feel a bit off.

Like you, I was happy with the way SD's transformation turned out. i loved how he was angry with himself more than anyone else and how determined he was to change. change, he did and I rejoiced at his new found maturity and independency. But after the bus scene, i found myself wondering: what the hell happened to all the character developments in the previous episodes??

I have no problem with SD's wish for HM to stay, and i totally get the crying and the chasing, because i know that SD is the type of person who has no restraint on his emotions (and i love him for it). but what i am a little peeved about is that he didn't consider about HM's dream and was solely concentrating on how to get her to stay by his side. If this was old SD, i'd expect it, but the SD now is different, and it puzzles me greatly to see him act like that.

how are they "not in the same level"? are you serious...

i think this whole series is based around these two and how they grew- together. yknow, while jingguk is away debuting and breaking his promise to hyemi ;)

i guess you missed some blatant details, honey.

Jinguk didn't break his promises for no reason dear.

"Jinguk didn’t break his promises for no reason dear."

But he still choose to hurt his friend without an explanation don't tell me he didn't have enough time before the conference for that.
He did that as much to get back at daddy as to stay with HM

Actually, Sam-dong has changed dramatically in regards to how he acts towards Hye-mi. Granted, he was a bit eager-puppyesque in the first half, but after the catastrophe involving his hearing, he became much more serious and mature.

In this episode he does get more desperate towards the end, but before that, I was totally impressed with the calm, non-territorial way he challenged Jin-gook, while admitting his own shortcomings. I think that's a long way off from "desperate sad puppy".

@Katey B - SD is a wussy for crying are you kidding me.... go rewatch all the time JG cried- now who is the WUSSY!

JG couldn't ask HM to stay even if he wanted to- because like he said he doesn't have a reason to ask her to stay.. that basically means that he knows that in her heart , it isn't him.. and beside how do you ask someone to stay for you if you were never really there for them.. and he knows it...

And of course HM would stay or go depending on what she wants to do with her life,, but any girl would want to know that the man they love would want them to stay (doesn't mean they will stay but at least show some emotion, some love).

katey b. yeah. so what is wrong with crying on the middle of the road bawling like a child?
SD is someone who is not afraid to show his feelings-it is that earnest and true.
what is wrong with telling the person you love that you cant live without them? i actually think it is brave of him since most people would not do that just to keep their pride intact. and he can definitely live without her its that he chooses not to live without her
but yeah you have a screwy logic. if you think loving someone with your whole heart is a pathetic and a weak thing to do then good luck loving something else other than your pride.

Hello and love to the people who think I’m hating on Sam-Dong.

Actually I think he’s cute looking and has an awesome talent.

I just wish he was able to show these in Episode 15 to confess his feelings to Hye-Mi like make a song for her or the like.

His crying just didn’t appeal to me. If that makes me wack so be it.

Apologies if I rubbed you up the wrong way by voicing my opinion.

Sometimes you just gotta stay true to you are and it looks like Sam-Dong and I are doing that.

Moving on…wondering if Hye-Mi will get vocal about her feelings in Ep. 16. I totally hope so.

So looking forward to seeing the Dream High 6 set the stage on fire with their performance.

And…I’d love to have a Dream High 2 a year from now.

Wow.

I love this recap. I love how it seems like that you (gf) are secretly a SamMi shipper too. AHA. But damn, no words can actually describe how i feel watching this episode. It was too good, it's like a dream come true seeing hye mi gets embarassed by Samdong cos she now realizes her true feelings, she wouldn't even make eye contact :')

Samdong chased her at the beginning, and hye mi chased him in the end. I can't stand seeing him cry, even if its tears of joy, i cried too just watching him. This guy honestly got the whole package.

Is it me or is Samdong actually gets hotter and hotter each episode. When hye mi walked down that hallway and she saw Samdong and Jingook, i was like blown away SD actually has a killer smile. I could stare at him forever without getting bored of his face.

But yeah, if you truly love someone, don't tell me you wont even try to stop them from going away especially if they had a choice. And i personally think the reason of her moving to US was not good enough, i mean she can still do her debut and stay. So i can understand where samdong's coming from with this. He loves her man, he's been through so much it's killing me ;(

I want him to get the best happy ending. I'm waiting for a serious confession between these two lovers and a sweet kiss (please) :3 I can't bare to think there's 1 more episode to go. No more hye mi sam dong time, no more dream high arghh i'm gonna prepare alot of tissues. How i wish i'm in south korea right now so i can watch the final episode with my lovely kim soo hyun & Suzy. It would be magical. GAAAHH! God, please give me strength :"|

(P.S: Sam dong should have totally kissed hye mi when she held his face like that, & that hug aww so sweet please just please i wont stop until you two get together!!)
