King of reversals: Park Shi-hoo interview

He’s one of those actors whose buzz you don’t really get…until you watch him in something, and then you’re like, who IS this guy, and can I have MOAR, please? Park Shi-hoo steadily made his way up the actor food chain with family dramas and daily shows, (or as the second lead in dramas like Iljimae) until his starring role in last year’s cult hit Prosecutor Princess, which wasn’t so hot ratings-wise, but had a rabid fanbase whose fervor knows no bounds. Seriously. It’s sometimes scary.
And then at the turn of the new year, he began as the second lead (again) in the workplace drama Queen of Reversals, with Kim Nam-joo and Jung Jun-ho. The show kept getting extended, and extended…and then ratings kept on rising, and rising…and the more screentime he got, the better the drama was, and the more his character romanced the heroine, the more we HAD to see what happened next. It’s actually a case where an extension allowed time for the second lead to be developed as a character…and paved the way for him to get the girl. (And keep fans from posting angry comments, I daresay.)
This is an interview conducted at a theater where he watched the last episode of Queen of Reversals with fans, a thing he likes to do.
How do you feel after having watched the last episode with fans?
I think watching the last episode with fans really remains in my heart. I like it because it becomes a happy memory for me.
There are a lot of fans here. How does it feel?
I’m thankful for fans from Thailand, Japan, everyone who flew overseas to faithfully cheer me on. I’m so touched by them. And now, even grandpas and grandmas recognize me. Lately, young kids all the way up to older people are sending me love. I’m so thankful, and amazed.
Queen of Reversals kept getting extended. Wasn’t that hard?
It was not unlike doing two dramas. Truthfully the shoot was really hard. It was like being drunk on sleep for one hour, every three days. It was a really tough decision to extend from 20 episodes to 30. But our team’s vibe was so good, and the chemistry between the actors was good, so we were able to finish the series out in good spirits. If there’s one downside, it’s that I’ve shot this drama for so long that I think it’s going to be hard for me to break out of Yong-shik’s character.
In this drama you earned a new nickname. What do you think are your best traits?
I think they’re looking favorably at me working hard on my role. In the case of Queen of Reversals, in the beginning my character was cute, and then in the latter half I had sadder scenes, and lots of scenes where I got to confess my love. I think fans are responding to the sadness in my character. Is it because they felt sorry for me? Haha. Personally, I like the nickname “꼬픈남” best. [kko-peun-nam, as in 꼬시고 싶은 남자 = a man you want to seduce] I’ll always work hard in my future projects, to keep fans’ expectations rising.
How was your chemistry with onscreen partner Kim Nam-joo?
Shooting for a long time with Kim Nam-joo sunbae made me realize that she’s such a warm sunbae [senior colleague]. I learned a lot from watching her look after everyone, from the cast to the staff. I also think that we were able to make a good drama with over 30 episodes because we worked well together. I’m thankful for that.
Your last kiss scene became quite the subject of conversation.
When we filmed the last kiss scene, the director was crying. He said, “When you cried, your sincere emotions came through, and it made me cry.” I was so grateful for his words.
From the beginning of the drama your character’s fashion sense was on display. Do you have a personal interest in style?
I like sunglasses and scarves a lot. I used a lot of my own sunglasses on the drama shoot. When styling, I like to make a point with fashion, like a prop.
What genre do you want to tackle for your next project?
I want to try something that I’ve never been able to show before. A manly role in a noir film would be good. I also get told a lot that I’d be good as a vampire, so I want to try that. Should I try a horror movie this summer? Haha.
The most memorable fan you’ve met today?
Someone with a physical disability came all this way, and even brought me a present. I felt such warmth today. As much precious love that I’m receiving, I want to keep working hard to give back more.
Any goals for the new year?
Queen of Reversals went on for a long time, but my fans cheered me on without rest, so I’m grateful. I think on an actor’s journey, the saying that you “reap what you sow” isn’t really right. I think it’s more like, “You have to work hard to reach that critical point, and only then will results show.” So you could work hard until 99, but if you don’t do that last 1 percent, everything from 0 to 99 could go to waste. I’ll try my hardest to always show you my best.

Man, I love this man! There is just something about him that makes me want to watch more of whatever drama he is in! And those sunglasses...gosh he looks so good in them!
Thinking about it, I am probably a part of that rabid prosecutor princess fan base.

I WAS OBSESSED WITH PROSECUTOR PRINCESS! I MIGHT GIVE KING OF REVERSALS A TRY THEN! i saw the first episode and it didn't seem to do much for me... i have to go and watch this! i love park shi hoo!

The first time i saw him when I watched him in since prosecutor princess, and he start to grown on me after that. And it made me decide to watched his older dramma, family honor. In the later of the drama, particularly after he got married,he is becoming more funny there... I love him more.... Hope he will pick up next project soon

Ahhh, Park Si Hoo never fails me. He's got this mash of cuteness and handsome thing going on that's just sexy all over! That's why i laughed so hard when i first heard 꼬픈남 in the drama; it was so appropriate! I'm looking forward to his next work. I remember him saying that he wants to try out a totally different role~~ because all of his roles have been elite characters. I'd watch him in any role; he's just a great and passionate actor who can make you believe! <3

I totally get his hype. When I first saw him in Ilijmae I was that whoa...the grown-up version of Iljimae's half-brother (Shi Hoo/Ja Dol) ain't so bad looking. I love his mouth, his jawline, and his SMILE. And I don't know no why everybody else doesn't love him! :) I guess he is my type. I feel nothing for JSG (of MSOAN and YAB), while others would give their right pinky to hug him!

I love Park Shi Hoo, just completed watching Prosecutor Princess, my next move to watch his Family honor and Queen of Reversal to enjoy his loving acting again and i especially love his eyes expression.

Park Shi Hoo is a great actor ! Really like his acting in Queen Of Reversal(QOR) . Watched all his dramas starting from Perfect Neighbour, Family Honor, Prosecutor Princess(PP) and QOR and he really had good chemistry with all the female leads.
He is so charismatic with his killer smile. He is also convincing in his sad scenes and you can really feel for him particularly in PP and QOR. That's why he managed to outshine the original male leads in Perfect Neighbour and QOR and really deserve the title of King of Reversal!
Can't wait for his next drama.

i just ended to watch QOR, and i can only say! one of the best drama i've ever seen....love chemistry between kim nam joo and park shi hoo....i enjoyed more his acting in this serie than PP....

try dramaload, its a paid website - very good drama with HD - you can get Family Honor there. I have watched it at least 7 times. Really good watching PSH and Danah (always cant get her name). You can feel the depth of the emotions when you watch both of them in Family's honor.

After watching PP, I started to hunt out every DB articles on PSH--I had another cute guy to ogle for :)
One thing though, why could not help but think that he so looks like Kang Ji Hwan? The more I look at him the more I see the resemblance...

Yeah! Its the PSH I want to admire and fan. He puts in 100 and 1% in his acting. Just imagine from second place he was given more screening as QOR developes. I have followed all his dramas from Which star are you from (not impressive), Perfect neighbours (gauge moves up slightly), Ijima ( so-so), Family's Honor (shot up to - fantastic), then Prosecutor Princess (very, very good) and QOF - fantastic is just too humble, very, very good- cheezy, sleezy guy who became a serious lover. Really nice just to watch PSH, nevermind the others, please get him a partner like Danah (Family Honor) - perfect couple. Dont, dont be a vampire - that is too fictitious like Twilight , just be a human will be fine, PSH. Please give us another drama soon, please!

I can't agree with you more DsoulP, Kim Nam Joo is so..........................................................beautiful, I can tell Park Shi Hoo's eyes are on fire everytime he look at her. Especially her eye except her hair style.
she had her special character that other younger actress doesn't have. just like Park Shi Hoo said "even she just walk by, you got to attract by her".
In QOR, Park Shi Hoo & Kim Nam Joo had such a great chemistry together, that make the drama so well done
I have been watching it everyday until now, I'm still watching it, repeat & repeat at least 1000 times.
I can't stop.
I wish PSH & KNJ will work on another drama again as a pair, I will never get tired with them. plea.......................................................................se!!!!!!

I followed almost all PSH dramas and his acting skills improved a lot. Actually it is a raising trend in his career. Never mind if his performance was entirely about a wealthy ruthless man transformed into a serious lover. I can’t bother to see continuing like this as long as his performance is very convincing and make me cry every time when I saw the pain on his face or adorable smile.
I saw above some critical views on the match between PSH and KNJ. I admit that at first I also had some doubts. And the romance with a mature woman so beloved by her husband seemed to have no chance. But after few episodes I definitely changed my minds. The PSH character transformation succeeded to convince me that there is no way that being together with her. As somebody else says here, I didn’t want to see her husband on the screen anymore. And this is PSH merit. From this point a view, the power of this drama was amazing because it made you to fight for love even when the evidence or moral conduits shows you to do contrarily. The performance of PSH was so good and so mature and KNJ response was on the same line.
I understand that the next movie title of PSH is “I am a murderer”. I hope to be well received on the market but I just can’t imagine him in this kind of movie.
Please return to the movie about power of love, you are doing a great job!!!

I was mesmerized by his smile in PROSECUTOR PRINCESS! His acting was just a bonus. I've seen QoR several times, yet I couldn't get enough of him.
His brooding looks, tortured expression and longing mirrored in his eyes made me a fan for life. His acting has progressively improved as evidenced by PRINCESS' MAN. He played his roles perfectly... and when he kisses him leading ladies, WOW! You want to be THEM!
I will wait eagerly for his other dramas, just so I could bask in his charisma and expressive eyes.
