MBC’s new weekend drama Do You Hear My Heart? is readying for its premiere in two weeks, and recently held its poster shoots (see above and directly below). While the drama has been flying sorta under my radar, there are a couple points that have me potentially interested: the offbeat premise and the writer and director pair.
Do You Hear My Heart? is about the love story between a man who is deaf but pretends he can hear, and a woman who pretends to be dim-witted to spare the dignity of her dim-witted father. Aw. For once, something that departs from the norm! From that short description alone, I can imagine tons of narrative and character-development possibilities.
Casting isn’t a total win, but I’m not writing them off yet. In the lead role is Kim Jae-won (Hwang Jini, My Love Patzzi), who isn’t really a skilled actor but has an easy personal charm that makes him approachable. Known for his bright smile, Kim is just two months post-military service, which means (1) I’ll be watching to see if he’s matured and added depth to his character, and (2) obligatory abs shot!
The lead actress is Giant’s (weak link) Hwang Jung-eum, who, eh. While I don’t dislike her, I have no great hopes for her performance; she was even voted “No. 1 actress with bad acting” not long ago, as I read in a recent wave of stories announcing the poll.
I like the second leads a little better: There’s Lee Kyu-han of Que Sera Sera, as well as Go Jun-hee of What’s Up Fox and Namgoong Min of Birth of the Rich. Then there’s budding child star Kim Sae-ron, who teamed up with Won Bin in Ajusshi and is about to take on another high-profile pairing with Kim Seung-woo.
But more than the actors, I’m taking note of the producers: PD Kim Sang-ho was okay with Fantasy Couple but cracked me up with the wacky short drama Legend of Hyang Dan. Then he transitioned pretty drastically by taking on the dark, eerie horror-thriller series Hon, showing that he’s capable of range. Writing is Moon Hee-jung, who did the bright comedy Smile You and the zippy, adorable rom-com Last Scandal of My Life (the latter of which I tore through speedily and found delightful).
Do You Hear My Heart? is an MBC weekend drama premiering on April 2, following Flames of Desire. I’m not positive on episode count, but I think it’s 30 — a bit long, but do-able if the story grabs me as much as I hope it will.

WTH did they do to HJE’s hair!!! Please let it be in temporary in the drama…hopefully this one does well
Because the “candy-type”, optimistic character needs to be tomboyish..complete with a bob cut ~.~
Oh the other hand, Kim Jae Won looks suave.
But UGH, a weekend drama must mean a bazillion eps. 30 is already too much.
You are wrong. THIS IS THE BEST DRAMA I ALREADY SEE> EP 30 IS TOO SMALL. (Sorry for many captial letters. I am not screaming. I am just squealing because it is the best. ) It is the SWEESTEST drama ever. I am Deaf and I love the Deaf sign language. And finally there is no pretty lead role like tall long hair. I mean they are pretty but there are different kind of pretty too. There is also a childlike behaviors with eyes that is just too sweetest. =) Sorry for my ranting. Don’t mean no offend. Thank you. =)
PS: The father with mental redation is just too I am Sam american film. And there is a lot of family problem that overcome the theme and fact they are special need. There is only a subtle. I like it like they are just an ordinary family with problem.
I 2nd that! Guyz! if you have not watch ‘Do you hear my heart’ Do so! 30 Episodes might seem too much but you will get into the drama from the minute you start it & then you will not notice how long it is. It is truly amazing! ( keep tissues with you when you watch it)
The same hair that Lee Young-ah had for her role in Baker Kim Tak-goo >.<. Reminds me how much I hated it at first.
OMG!!!…Kim Jae Won looks soooo dashing post service!!!..also Lee KYu Han??…..wonderful!!!
sorry for the involuntary fangirling….the story lloks interesting too i guess…lol
Where is that male child actor from?? He looks so familiar.
OH SHOOT i think he was on Star King pretending to be a girl who looks like SHINee’s Taemin! HAHA weird background… maybe it’s him, maybe it’s not. I’ll have to watch an episode.
I love Kim Jae Won as much as the next squealing fan but I think I’m most excited to see the child actress (Kim Sae Ron) for this one. I really enjoyed her performance in ‘Ahjusshi’ so yay for more from her!
Please tell me that is a wig on Hwang Jung Eum’s head…
She was wearing a similar wig in Giant, so it might be the case here too…
I am now really exited to see this! Lee Kyu-han is a great actor. He needs to be the lead one of these days.
I KNOW! He is incredibly lovable, especially when he plays the jerk (Samsoon, Smile You). He is totally underrated and needs to get his spot on center stage–did he already do his military?
I love Lee Kyu-han too! I always want to punch his characters in the face and then afterwards, go add ointment to his face.
I guess he’s just too good at playing jerky second leads. One day Lee Kyu-han, one day.
I like the premise! I’ll watch the drama because of it, I never be a fan of Kim Jae-won, but I want to see this lucky kid actor Kim Sae-ron in small screen.
mmm, lee kyu han and go jun hee would have made a more interesting pair of leads.
Such great potential for narrative hijinks! Will definitely tune in.
sounds interesting!
Why, oh, why do I like all the secondary characters more than the leads? No offense to Kim Jae Won – he has the most adorable smile. *sigh*
YES!!
I can hear your heartbeat!
Count me in ^ ^
Kim Jae Won back in dramaland! YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! Love him!! <3
Hmm, I always thought Hwang was surprisingly better at acting than I expected. I watched the entire Highkick and loved her character a lot. But then again, she was hilarious (in a great way) in that over the top kind of acting. I guess she sucks at subtlety?
I actually also really enjoyed her character in high kick and also giant.
I think she improved in giant, i don’t think she’s a bad actress, at least she entertains and have nice screen presence.
Maybe not the best actress but i think she’ll cope up well with the candy-type character.
Nam Goong Min is hawt, i don’t know why i’ve so much love for him ever since one fine day even though that drama sucks.
KJW, nice to see him back. He’s the guy i loved from my love patzzi even though the ending killed it.
i watched one fine day just for that man but i couldn’t bring myself to finish. just one more episode but i couldn’t take it. i’m really liking all the second leads+KJW. i haven’t seen Hwang in anything tho.
Kim Sae Ron is absolutely adorable.
Hwang Jung Eum, on the other hand, looks like SHINee’s Taemin :/
JB will do the 30 eppies? Yeah!
Strangely this one I feel like jumping in even if it’s 30 whereas 49 days still eh.. lazy.
This plot sounds too odd to pass up. ^_^ I only know the little girl. Everyone else is new to me.
ewwww her hair awww man i wish it was the same as high kick through the roof
aw cute! at least its not 50 episodes though
sounding interesting. I’ve been kinda avoiding this drama myself but i think i might check it out when it airs next month!!
I’m not really sure about this one.
I’m not going to quote Tropic Thunder here, but I hope they take Kirk Lazarus’s advice.
It could be really cute, or incredibly insulting. It is a very thin line.
KRW is so quietly sexy, and the other guy’s hot, too.
I’ll definitely give it a look and listen.
I’ve never seen the lead actors in anything so I can’t say anything against them, but Lee Kyu-han, Go Jun-hee, and Kim Sae-ron definitely got my interest. Will have to watch it later though when I have more strength to make it through all the eps.
i love the cast!!! so going to watch it now
that ahjussi kid is every where this days . lol but anyway off to watch 49 days
I love Kim Jae Won.
I dont care.
AND LITTLE AHJUSSHI GIRL IS GOING TO BE YOUNG HWANG JUNG EUM?!!!
ill def. give the beg. a try!!!!!!!!!
this drama looks promising, thanks for the heads-up!
i honestly think hwang jung-eum gets a bad rap undeservedly. she may not be the best actress ever, but she is still new. i saw both high kick through the roof and giant and she fit both those roles really well and pulled off her lines naturally, crying scenes as well as cheery light scenes. i might get stoned for saying this, but i think she is a more natural actor than ha ji-won!! (whenever i watch ha ji-won in anything, i can always tells she is “acting”. so not natural.) i think people mostly don’t like hwang jung-eum because her voice comes off as annoying a lot of the time.
anyways, i will check this one out! these days there’s been nothing to watch except for CRIME SQUAD.
aww sounds cute (:
I like Hwang Jung eun too! i’m currently watching and getting addicted of her and Daniel Choi. I’ll watch Giant next because i want to see her again. I don’t know, she might not be good in acting, but she’s great in romcom =).
The only thing I’ve seen Kim Jae-won is 100 Days with Mr. Arrogant, which I thought was just awful. But I always had a soft spot for him and his beautiful smile. So cute. And he’s looking just great post-military.
I think I’ll try watching for him. And the story is different/intriguing.
kim sae ron is paired up with this adorable boy!~ I don’t know if I’m watching this for the interesting story or for the cute child coupling! lol
I’m with S@lly on this one…the kids are absolutely adorable! That little girl is going to be a total heart breaker, and his smile is sweet enough to melt anyone.
Gah. Those kids are so cute. <3
thank god that iam not the only one who thougt Hwang Jung-eum is a bad actress
The plot is really interest me and im sure it will do well since it comes from the writer of Smile,You and Last Scandal,. now if only they cast another actress as the lead T_T
I hazily remember Lee Kyu-han’s acting but I remember him from the variety show “Introducing Star’s Friend” in which he was HILARIOUS. He’s also good friends with Kim Kang Woo.
I’ll look forward to this at least until the first episode haha
i can hardly wait for this drama coz of kim jae won & nam goon min who i liked in one fine day, etc. i think my choice for lead actress would have been Lee Young Ah of Baker Kim Tak gu, she’s sweet & really good in acting! oh well, it’s always something we don’t have control of but i’d watch it for these two actors KJW & NGM.
I like the cast but not Jung eum’s hair. Omg it’s so short o_o
dam. I wish Jung Eum ended up with Goongmin though.
I love Hwang Jung Eum!!
I can’t wait for this drama to air.
I love the cast.
i can’t find the article you were talking about that hwang jung eum is #1 bad actress. all i found on google was this article -_-
i long hwang jung eum, she’s a hilarious actress since i followed through her role in high kick through the roof. she played the over-the-top character perfectly, and she is my favourite character in the drama, which is my favourite sitcom ever btw. so far i can’t think of another actress who can play that role off that well.
i really don’t like her hair, but whatever. this drama is doing pretty well (13%) for a starter….and nobody watches dramas with bad main actors/actresses, so please stop saying she is bad! she’s one of my top 5 favourite actresses.
is it just me or cheong bo suk and hwang jung eum are in ALL dramas together? high kick through the roof, giant, then now do you hear my heart!
I am Myanmar.I like Cha Dong Joo Love.
love, love, love this drama
