Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs: Series review

There’s a fondness that I’ve had my entire life for best friend rom-coms. That is, dramas where the main couple consists of two best friends who circle each other their whole lives, not realizing that they’re destined to be together. It’s the kind of drama where everyone except for the two best friends knows that they’re in love, and we get a sick sense of pleasure in ranting, “Are you stupid? Don’t you know you love her? Kiss her already!”

One of my favorite old-school dramas was 1997’s Propose, which I’m mentioning twice this week, strangely enough. It had a similar premise, and I’ve always had a soft spot for dramas in this vein ever since. I hadn’t watched 2007’s Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs when it aired because it just passed under my radar for whatever reason.

Friends had always recommended this drama because they know about my penchant for BFF-rom-coms, so it was on my to-watch list for some time. But then this past year, I saw Lee Jung-jin being all hot and badass in Runaway, and then I saw Su Ae being all hot and badass in Athena, and the thought of them being together just blew my mind.

The fact that it also starred Playful Kiss‘s resident Ducky, Lee Tae-sung was just icing on the cake. So off I went, and sixteen episodes later, I’m happy to report that this drama is totally in my wheelhouse, and worth sharing with the rest of the class.

Note: If you’re searching for this drama to give it a watch, sometimes it’s listed as 9 End 2 Outs, which is just how the title was translated (badly) at the time.

SERIES REVIEW

So judging from the title, the thing is about baseball, yeah? Nope. Not about baseball at all. It’s just a series-long metaphor for love, work, and the dating game, coupled with that major turn in your life, when you wake up north of 30 and face the fact that things didn’t exactly turn out the way you had imagined when you were young.

The heroine (played by Su Ae) begins the series on her 30th birthday, living in her mom’s house, and still struggling with her dream of becoming a writer. The only things coming out of Mom’s mouth daily are to give up her pipedream and get married already. Never heard that before. Nope. So faced with the harsh reality of folding her dream and getting married off to someone that her mom picks out, she decides to head out on her own.

Her best friend of thirty years (played by Lee Jung-jin) is a charming, playful playboy, who works at an advertising agency. What’s great about his character is that he isn’t the typical cold proud hero. He might occasionally be that guy to other women, but with the heroine, he’s warm, goofy, and childlike because they’ve been this close since they were kids.

Through a series of k-drama machinations, she ends up moving into his apartment, and they become one of the best roommate pairings in all of kdramaland. What’s great about these two is that they aren’t a pair of strangers who end up having to share an uncomfortably close living space (which has its perks in many dramas, don’t get me wrong).

But they’re best friends, who know WAY too much about each other to begin with…and then when coupled with having to live together, they essentially become a hilarious old married couple, mixed with the strange distance of being fully aware of being a grown man and woman who share a sexual attraction.

In short, it’s drama heaven. Sexual tension, adorable friendship, hilarious things they discover about each other as roommates…coupled with a grounded relationship with the one person in the world who tells it like it is, and holds your hand through all your breakups.

Seriously, if I think about it, I’m never jealous of relationships in k-dramas. I might want that kind of guy in my life, or I might want to be this kind of heroine, but usually k-drama relationships are quite…dysfunctional and, well, unrealistic, to say the least. I mean, how many people do you know who sign into contract marriages or fall in love with their abusive bosses?

But this drama actually made me want that kind of relationship (the friendship, not the abusive boss). I love their comfort level, and their realistic discussions about dating, sex, and love. It’s a refreshing kind of honesty that actually reflects the way real friends talk to each other. They have some hilariously frank conversations about the things men and women do, and why they are such different creatures when it comes to dating.

The main couple is surrounded by a group of college friends who’ve spent their twenties in a variety of ways, and then get back in touch. They form a nice context which informs the main couple’s friendship, but also provide another realistic setting of a group of thirtysomethings who knew each other when they were at their most idealistic and youthful.

But the biggest impetus for reflecting on age is the relationship that the heroine begins the drama with: her romance with a 22-year old baseball pitcher who’s still in college, played by Lee Tae-sung. It’s a wonderfully mismatched romance between a writer who’s entering a critical point in her dating life (as in, thinking about marriage and her future) and a kid who has never read an entire book, and is just starting to dream.

What’s nice is that it plays both sides of the coin. One the one hand, their relationship is doomed because the age difference is played realistically, which means that their expectations, their experiences, their futures—are all out of alignment. But on the other hand, because he’s a bleeding-heart 22-year old, and earnest to within an inch of his life, he chases her with utter abandon (which totally makes me swoon, a la The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry and Biscuit Teacher Star Candy).

So we’re with her every step of the way, when she’s completely taken with him, and when she comes up against a wall, and then when she’s reeled back in, and then forced to face another harsh reality. And through it all, her best friend talks her through it with lots and lots of beer, and then holds her hair back when she has to puke.

I love his initial teasing and relentless kid-jokes, all the while being the supportive best friend, and yet…still with that male posturing of I-could-take-that-kid-but-I’m-gonna-be-the-adult…which is equally childish, and hilarious to watch.

As we watch them date other people and struggle to figure out how to do right by their hearts, they grow closer by the day, until eventually their lives become incomplete without each other. It’s a progression that feels organic to the story, but also manages to do that crack-laced number on the audience, as we pick up on the signs faster than they do, and end up wringing our hands in anticipation.

We see through a series of short flashbacks sprinkled throughout the show that they had always loved each other, since they were young, but their timing had always been off. Towards the end of the series, when the six friends reflect on what love is, our heroine answers: “Love is: Timing.”

And that’s just something I believe—that love isn’t just the having of feelings, but two people who make choices to act on them, and in the end it all comes down to timing. Anyone who’s experienced losing that window knows what I mean. And I love a story that shows a realistic friendship between a man and woman that treads those murky waters.

It’s not just about denying feelings either, since they acknowledge the fact that feelings are there, but get scared of what they’ll lose—a potentially lifelong friendship that isn’t so easily disposed of, like other romantic relationships. And it’s a realistic fear, since, let’s be honest…how many of us actually stay friends with our exes?

What I like about this drama is more than just the tone or the story, but its point of view, about life and love. I love that the heroine struggles with the fear that this might be the last chance she’ll get at love, or that she has to face the fact that while her dream is to write, she may not be very good at it. Growing up means facing those fears, and coming to terms with who you are in spite of them.

I love that she doesn’t succeed as a writer in one fell swoop, but that she adjusts her expectations, and learns to become a better editor in the meantime. In facing her biggest fear—the possibility of losing her best friend and the love of her life—she gains the courage to keep working at her dream.

This drama isn’t particularly snazzy, and it doesn’t have a hook that sounds zippy as a one-liner. But it captures something fantastically rare. It shows that becoming an adult is actually a painful process, and one that we only begin to unfold at the quarter-life crisis. But the struggle that we go through is worth the reward on the other side: self-awareness, a broader sense of the world around you, and an appreciation for the people in your life who make you who you are. And if that just so happens to be your uber-hot BFF, then well, YOU WIN.

I'm thinking on watching this series or Que Sera2. LJJ & SA is such a lovely pair and the story seems new.

I know JB gave 9/10 for QSS but i still hvent got the interest in watching it, although a big fan of Eric.

any sugestion on which one would be better? Soo Ae or Eric? or better yet, a drama with Soo Ae & Eric.

The actors in "Que Sera, Sera" are so awesome, especially the leads!!! The story totally surprised me. I love seeing a girl go after what she wants. It is so refreshing in that way!! It is a very intense drama with a mystery to boot. The description of it at DramaFever is really not quite accurate. The music is unique, varied, and fits well with the story. I enjoy listening to it on YouTube.

If I am watching a drama that is marginal or I think it is headed in a direction I do not like I will skip to the end to see if it is really worth finishing. This one had me riveted. It is one of a few that I did not skip to the end. I was so convinced by Eric Moon's acting that I did not need to cheat. And even so, the ending still held a wonderful piece for me that was unexpected. It is in my top 10

I really like "Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs." I think I prefer dramas where the leads live together and find love by sharing a multitude of daily experiences which only K-drama producers, directors, and cinematographers can deliver so creatively. It has one of the best kisses --WOW!

OH MY GOD! So happy that you reviewed this series GF!
I haven't finished reading your review yet but I just feel like dropping a comment first.

This drama definitely holds a special place in my heart... More so because of this tight knit group of friends, than the romance, though I also love myself a good BFF rom-com. I'm glad I stumbled upon that drama back then when I did. I had no idea why... It wasn't that hyped upon, and it had fairly low ratings but I gave it a shot possibly after reading some random blogger/commenter's mention. I fell in love with Lee Jung Jin and Soo Ae after watching this drama, and I've been waiting for you and JB to get onto this 'cause I wanted to see how either or both of you rated this drama. I know nothing about baseball and that translated title is such a mouthful, it gives me a headache 'cause till this day I've no idea what the 2 outs in the ninth innings mean so I stick to the shorter but weirder translation of 9 End 2 Outs.

Hey, I'm no baseball whiz or fan... but the 9th inning is the last inning of a baseball game. If you get 3 outs in an inning, your side gets "retired"-- therefore, if you get 3 outs in the 9th inning, the game is over.

So the title, I think, stands for a critical moment in one's life-- the time when one has to give one's all.
This reflects all the difficult decisions rgdg. love, career, family etc. that the characters have to take--decisions that they have to take at the cusp of "real" adulthood, the period when you hit your 30s.

What a great weekend gift girlfriday! Thank you so much!

I just discovered this gem of a series this year too by accident! I truly loved it and it now joins my list of fave Kdramas. I just love their authenticity and how they portray their friendship so well. Suspension of disbelief many times over!

this is the first drama that i marathoned and get to finish... hahaha. what attracted me to it was its theme song it was so cute. hahaha. :)

up until now i had a different review for this drama because as i remember it didn't really made a big impact on me or whatsoever. i tell my friends that it has no story and lalala... maybe because i was just a noob in kdramas that time. now after reading your review i might rewatch it because back then i havent realized that they were really best of friends (or was my subtitles just bad? hahaha) anyways... i might rewatch it if i have the time.. and besides it has atleast 3episodes of SNSD's yoona in it hahaha! :)

thank you so much for this review. my drama bud and i were just discussing that this drama stands alone as the only drama about "real friends" that enter a romantic relationship.
i watched the drama about 2yrs ago when i was about to turn 30 and it resonated so clearly for me. it made me think and dream, and ultimately satisfied that i really had no regrets. this is a wonderful drama and to me embodies what i love about kdrama as a whole.

thanks again:)

This has got to be one of my favorite dramas. The reason why is because I watched it while also undergoing life changes and I could really identify with the female lead. Kdramas are also about timing. You watch them when the time is right.

Most underrated drama. Love it. Drama crack. I think many people were put off by the weird sounding title which makes it sound like a sports drama, but it's not. Also I think it was out when Coffee Prince was originally airing so....

This drama has so many funny, warm and memorable moments. The leads are great and so is Ducky, pre-ducky. Perfect for a rainy day marathon.

Thanks GF. Enjoyed your recap. Watched this because of Lee Jung-jin in Runaway. Liked their chemistry and friendship...so could watch this again...However, the ending was too juvenile. Wasn't it strange that, given their history, she put on the brakes after telling him she loved him.
That's not what I would do! Love his voice!

I really enjoyed this drama when I watched it almost two years ago. Like you said, it's very rare to see a drama that makes sense all the way. Sure, the ending really ticked me off... "Let's see how it goes..." was so vague, I almost kicked the computer screen but looking back, I liked that ending because it was realistic! No flash forward to six years later, five kids later, and no marriage yet. Or whatever. Reminded me of MNIKSS, ending was annoyingly realistic.

I might watch it again because frankly, the only thing that drew me into this drama was Lee Jung Jae and probably still is... although I adore Lee Tae Sung after his epic role in PK (probably the only character that I enjoyed from beginning to end). :) I love rediscovering old dramas.

Thanks for the review!

It's so nice to see this drama get some love. It has its flaws, but they can overpower what's good about it. I do love a good "best friend" ship and 9E2O takes it one step further. I've described it before as a comedy about being newlyweds (the normal kind who actually know each other before getting married), but with a hefty does of UTS because they aren't actually a couple.

It took me a couple of viewings, but I decided I really like the end, especially in light of the beginning. At the start of the drama, she felt like... well, that she was "at the bottom of the ninth with two outs". In short, that her life was over. Instead, she realizes that her life is just beginning and there's no need to race. She can just enjoy her time dating the love of her life, because it not like life is a race and marriage is the finish line. It's a little like what they talked about in Dream High, she still wants to be an author, so she's going to learn as much as she can.

Other things, I liked:

*That men and women can actually be friends, since both Su Ae and Lee Jung-jin have friends of the opposite sex that they don't feel romantic about.

*Small moments of comedy in an otherwise serious scene, like when Su Ae and Lee Tae-sung are in the middle of one of their heartfelt "no, we can't break up moments" and Lee Jung-jin is trying to get Ducky to remove his shoes.

*Su Ae's 20-something coworker, who I thought I was going to love to hate... and instead just loved.

*The complete and utter lack of an evil, secondary romantic lead. (Well, the one girlfriend annoyed me and the return of the ex-girlfriend was poorly done, but neither was evil.)

*When Su Ae and Lee Jung-jin's living arrangements got found out by their circle of friends. They were both so the old married couple (bickering, answering in unison) that I crack up every time I watch that scene.

ooooo... I liked the scenes with Su Ae's mother as well. The way they had to keep thinking up lies and cover each other was great. Actually, I kinda wanted a scene where LJJ and SA tell the parents, really wonder about what the reactions would be like. For once, no family opposition, but plenty of potential of hilarity.

Oh! Oh! The scene where he drags her behind a tree to hid from her mother and Su Ae's eyes pop because her boyfriend and his soon-to-be girlfriend are hiding there as well and it's just way too Comedy of Errors for her.

I so wanted to see the parents to find out, especially her mom. Mostly because I think her mom would be so relieved and over the moon. A nice change from the "you're not good enough to date my son/daughter".

Remember that scene where Su Ae dyes her mom's hair towards the end? I wanted her mom to admit she already knew that the two of them were sharing an apartment, but didn't want to say anything because they seemed happy.

Required fields are marked *

Same here! I also wanted a scene where their friends acknowledge that they ended up together! That was lacking in the show!

My fave scene would have to be when Hyung Tae accidentally opens her nude photo session album! That was too hilarious, sweet and cute at the same time!

I expected a scene where he sneaks into her room to take a closer look at the photos.
I would have done that if I knew one of my roommates had nude photots.
It would have been fun to see the aftermath of him either
--trying to not get caught looking at her.
--mentioning things about her skin that he would only know if he saw her nekkid.
--avoiding freudian slips about nakedness.

How about the scene when her mom brings her herbal medicine for her PMS symptoms, like swollen breasts, and Hyung-tae is listening and giggling while hiding out on the balcony?

And I love how the girlfriends are bummed before going to a classmate's wedding, but how they feel so much better after seeing the unattractive groom, and the two guys comment on their change of mood.

Loved Lee Sang-woo's character (awesome biceps) as the ex-boyfriend who gently asks whether they can start dating again.

This is one of my favourite dramas and worthy of multiple rewatches. Thank you so much, girlfriday for bringing your wonderful review to dramabeans. Now if only you could convince javabeans to finish watching this! Tell her Lee Jung-jin is perfect in this!

Quiet at times, crazy at others. Great cast, too.

To all who want to watch this drama. The first part is a little slow and I remember that I had to push myself to keep watching the drama but it really gets better in the middle. If you just hang on, you'll surely appreciate this drama. Don't give up on it!

While the first part of the drama is rather slow, it does give the drama a depth that I think is essential.

This is one of my favorite dramas. I've rewatched it twice already (although I usually skip the first part).

The one thing that I didn't like about this drama is the kiss scene. The two actors have chemistry yes. But the kiss scene looked.... uncomfortable. Still, they're adorable.

Actually I watched this show twice too... First in 2007, and once more in 2009... So I can't remember correctly... But the parts that made me want to fastforward was towards the end of the show and they were so uncomfortable around each other, and there was so much angst for about a couple(?) of episodes. That was rather frustrating to sit through since I thought it was dragged out a bit slowly. But despite that, this remains one of my all time favorites.

The reason I love this drama is because of the point of view shared by the characters. Love is Timing. So true. I love dramas that depict real life themes and thoughts that a person can truly say. Plus it's LJJ and SuAe.

Thank you!!!! I am so happy this drama got it's review finally on DB. I was beginning to think I was odd for liking this drama but neither JB or GF mentioned anything about it.

Watched this one when I first discovered Kdramas. I agree with your review. Didn't expect much at first because I thought it was about sports. It turned out to be fun and tremendously enjoyable. Written well and well acted. One of my favorites BFF fall in love story lines.

I didn't even realize at that time who Lee Jung Jun was. Saw Lovers in Harvard and loved Kim Rae Won so much, I didn't even notice Lee Jung Jin. At that time, I couldn't remember who was who with the strange names.

Fast forward to the present, I have seen all three actors in subsequent dramas, comedies and movies. I now know that they are really talented actors. Lee Jung Jin stole the show from Rain in Runaway Plan B, and Su Ae kicked ass in Athena. I enjoyed Lee Tae Sung as cute Ducky the best in Playful Kiss.

All three of them were perfect in 9E2O. I wish I had a male BFF like Lee Jung Jin. Thank you for writing this review.

Unfortunately the subtitles that I got for the drama was
really bad but still understandable though and like girlfriday I've always had a soft spot for BFF rom coms.

I can honestly say that its one of those dramas that I will watch every few months, like Soulmate and The woman still who wants to marry.

And since I liked Lee Jung Jin ever since in Love Story in Harvard this made the drama more appealing to me.

Sign is finishing, and eventhough I am watching Midas-after 3 episodes, I am thinking it is only so-so.I like LMJ and JH in their other dramas, but this one. There is no chemistry between them, and the plot is boring so far.I can't put my finger on it, but something is off.

I really did love this drama. It was perfect for my quarter-life crisis. Hehe... Reading this makes me want to watch it all over again (and possibly Propose, if I had the time).
