Kim Tae-hee gears up for activities in Japan

Kim Tae-hee is making her official entrée into the Japanese market, and is currently looking at projects with the Japanese agency she signed with last year. On March 3, a rep from her agency said, “In the latter half of the year, she will be increasing her activities in Japan. She’s looking for all kinds of projects, whether dramas or films.”

This comes as Kim wraps work on her most recent drama, My Princess, which, if not her most successful project in terms of popularity or reach, is probably her most successful in terms of acting. After playing the bubbly, lovable Princess Seol, she has received favorable evaluations of her performance for practically the first time in her decade-long career, which is a pretty big divergence from the usual reviews that have dogged her dramas and movies. For many of them, she’s been called a pretty face but flat in delivery, as she was in her last drama, 2009’s IRIS. It’s difficult to believe she ever had trouble emoting when you consider Seol’s range of emotions, from her tearful outbursts to her bright, winsome cheer.

I would have expected Kim to make her big Japan push last year, riding the wave of the IRIS press machine, but perhaps My Princess will do better. It’s true that IRIS wasn’t as successful in Japan as initially hoped for, and at least My Princess has Hallyu fave Song Seung-heon, which ought to help buoy interest within the Japanese market (and from the ajummas!).

And while her tight drama filming schedule may be over, Kim’s schedule is as packed as ever with CF and photo shoots lined up, as well as meetings for another role to take on this year. Personally, I’m hoping Kim capitalizes on her recent progress and opts for another bright role. Kim Tae-hee attempting serious, badass, or dark? Not so much in the way of convincing. Kim Tae-hee being sunny and effervescent? A. DOR. A. BLE.

You say "help buoy interest,"
I read "boy interest."
SSH's fans will definitely pay more attention to her now.

I LOB HER, too.
I found it funny that she was considered a brainy beauty in the past. Not because she isn't smart. Kinda like Goldie Hawn at her peak.

She played naive and silly so well, why do the heavy stuff?

I also say she stick to rom-coms. She does them well! I'm not sure how well My Princess did (or is doing) in Japan, but she was more winning in My Princess so maybe it's better for her to enter into Japan this year.

Since My Princess was my first time seeing her acting, I'm surprised that she's had negative reviews before. I find her so charming in MP and I hope she'll do well in Japan. :D

Really!! Japan, Japan has a lot of their own actresses who are pretty to look at but can't act.
Someone correct me if they know more but I've read that she actually is quite anti-Japan, she supports an organisation that is known for it's anti-Japan activities.

Really?? What Japanese actresses are you talking about. Most Jdoramas have solid, really solid acting in them. And the big Japanese actresses definitely have solid acting......

"Most Jdoramas have solid, really solid acting in them."

Not at all. Good writing, dreadful acting.

REALLY? May I ask what is the reason that you can make some prejudice like that? I watch both K and J dramas in almost half of my life. And in my opinion, Japanese actors/actresses definitely have the solidest when it comes to act. Even the idols in Japan can really ACT unlike in Korea. and even there's a 29 years old actor can turn into a 16 y.o kid in a drama and he can still rock as a student and likewise. I think you obviously should watch more J dramas. If you like to see the solid acting you shouldn't watch the Johnny's boys doramas well except for Kimura Takuya's doramas. Try to watch 'Mother' and 'JIN' doramas first and let's see how they can bawl your eyes out.

Sorry to interrupt, but both of you guys are being slightly over the top.

"Even the idols in Japan can really ACT unlike in Korea."
There's been a few surprises on Korean idols successfully making a transition. Though, honestly, JE = idols. Not all idols are from JE, but saying idols can act but don't watch dramas from Johnny's is well.... ;D

Though let's be honest, we've seen good and bad from both sides. And it's not about whether they can act or not, but the style of acting that differs.

BTW: Wikipedia isn't really 100% reliable.

yep, im agree with you. i've been addicted to jdrama & kdrama since 10 years ago and i've seen good and bad from both sides.

but one thing for sure is, japanese actress are mostly idols. almost everytime i googled about an actress, i'll saw them half naked.

There are many actresses in their late twenties and early thirties, who are better actresses and successful in dramas and movies ,but not attempting that yet. I think she is doing it too early .Yes her acting is getting better but certainly not at a great level yet. Nevertheless, I wish her good luck.

Before MP, I did not know KTH. Im glad MP is my first exposure to her. Then I found out how she is the CF Queen of sorts in SK. And when I saw vids of those CF, she sure is made of princess stuff and have been marketed, packaged as such. It must be really hard for her to live up to that image. It is good that she was given the chance to debunk that image through, ironically, My Princess. Now she has made a more refreshing, easy-going path for her to tread. Hope she gets more rom-com roles in future...but also other light and breezy roles that will best hone her in her chosen craft. i think she has the intelligence and heart for it. I like how she takes care of the production crew during the MP shooting; says a lot about why she is on the top of her game. Its how she takes care of the people.

In my opinion, KTH and SSH should be cast together in every single thing from now on. Both are one-dimensional actors, or should I say non-dimensional. When her brother Lee Wan gets out of the military, they can add him to the cast. He has the same non-acting style as she does. The empty stare. She was so bad in Iris, she made LBH carry every scene they shared. Luckily, he's a real actor and could do that. She's got the nerve to say she needs work on her acting and then accepts where she sucks.

I hope she impresses the Japanese fans and they love her so much they keep her there. I highly doubt it though. the Japanese seem to be more discerning than that.

Again, let me say, in my opinion.

I think Kim Tae Hee's maybe the last Hallyu superstar to not yet have formally introduced herself in Japan. Never mind Iris or My Princess. If she just shows up on vacay, she would have gotten huge attention at the airport. Two of her shows, Stairway to Heaven and Love Story in Heaven, are okasan standards. In a way, she's the Aya Ueto of Korea -- a true CM queen, but still a work-in-progress as an actress.

It's amazing what the right project (w/ the right writer(s) and PD) can do for an actor/actress.

While KTH did overexaggerate the cute at the beginning of MP, she toned it down and the cute became more or less a part of her.

But more importantly, she did a very good job w/ the emotional/crying scenes in MP - definitely believable (much better, btw, than HJW in SG).

The same thing happened to YEH in "Coffee Prince" - combination of a well written part and able handling by the PD which led to YEH's best performance as an actress.

The same can also be said for Gong Yoo; before CP, I had only seen GY in a couple of things and let's just say I wasn't impressed by his acting - his acting in CP, otoh, was an eye-opener.

Based on KTH's CFs, I always thought she would be perfect for romcoms (she's up there w/ Shin Min ah and Jeon Ji heon).

Absolutely wonderful in My Princess. I would argue that not since early Jang Nara had we seen a heroine in a light rom-com drama with so much room filling, yet unaffected gusto.

I'm glad I watched MP. It's my first exposure to KTH and I find her earnest. She may not have great "dramatic" chops, but hey, what can we expect? It's a RomCom. She made me want to watch MP till the end and I could not stop smiling. Her on-screen chemistry with SSH is pure Hallyu gold. I hope to see similar projects from them in the future.
