Lee Shi-young kicks butt

I remember hearing that actress Lee Shi-young (Birth of the Rich) initially took up boxing to get into shape and trim down her already-trim figure to play a tennis champion in Playful Kiss. But she’s quickly become enamored of the sport and has continued to box, and competitively at that.

On March 16, she won her semifinal match in a national amateur boxing competition, beating out a competitor twelve years her junior (Lee turns 29 next month). That means she’ll continue on to compete in the finals on March 17.

I’d hate to be the girl she beat; it’s bad enough to lose a match, but to be the particular focus of media attention because your opponent is a famous actor? That’s gotta hurt.

Well, Lee Shi-young is known for her refreshing frankness, even when responding to critics, and here’s one more reason not to piss her off. Girl can kick your ass, literally. (I am in envy over those arms.)

Good for her. Not trying to be rude or stuff, but are we sure that her opponent is 12 years younger than her, because from the pictures she looks older than Shi-young. Both of them competed well, its just that there had to be a winner. Congrats sports women.

Look at LSY's brute arms o , 0 ... oh, what a tough girl!

The opponent, in red, has shorter arms so she already has one disadvantage, and too bad she doesn't have a speedy attack tactic to counter her shortcomings.

i like LSY and admire her for her acting and for this.
but i still feel really bad for the girl she beat though (refer to last pic)

Well they're both amateurs and I think the younger you are the better chances of winning since you're more likely to have better stamina and physique.

lol..what difference does the other girl's age make? since teenagers compete against others older then them all the time in other professionally played sports.

personally, it wouldnt matter to me if her opponent was 17, 25, or 90..since it's about skills. :P

I remember her We Got Married days, when she 'genuinely' kicked Jun Jin. I've thought "wow this girl is something!"
I liked her even though she played villain on BOF, and I liked her more after I saw her on WGM showing her 'true self'.

That's awesome Lee Shiyoung, the Gundam's lover!

Good for her! I like her, she seems more real and normal then most celebs. She is also outspoken which is a nice change.
I'm jealous of her though, boxing is such a cool thing to do.

I love how she continues boxing even when she doesn't need to. I imagine some actresses to shy away from activities where they don't look particularly pretty (and let's face it: boxing's a messy sport), but LSY looks as if she's having so much fun!

Her personality is so appealing and fresh. I remember laughing the most at her simple and candid responses on the show, as if she was not putting up airs for being an idol (no wonder JunJin wanted to date her - who wouldn't?)

And now she boxes? And wins? And doesn't worry about her face or teeth getting knocked out?

Man I adore her.

Wow, her opponent looks like she just got rocked. Congrats on her win. I've always loved LSY, because she's always seemed so fresh and honest, when everyone else was trying to be cute.

It's refreshing to see that she actually works out to stay fit. Love her. I alway thought she was a bit too skinny but if it's in the healthy way, there's nothing to complain about. =) Good for her. That's awesome and she looks so happy!

I'm glad some one said it, because the concern I thought I read more is the fact she was already super thin especially in Playful Kiss. When she got out of the car after almost hitting the lead in that drama in I saw her complete body, I said what a beauitful face. yup, that all I said.

No one beat the second daughter from "Daddy Girl" I'm still having nightmare that someone might mistake her legs for chopsticks.........seriously all jokes aside

I'm surprised she's competiting and isn't concerned about bruising or hurting her face or losing a tooth! She's tough! I'm envious of her arms!
Her opponent looks devasted in the last picture, it's got to be tough since there was media attention and she's 17?

I agree. That photo is really beautiful. Her joy is literally shining through.

I don't see anything wrong with the age difference between her and the competitor. That's how it is in sports...its not about the age, in many cases its about the 'level' of each competitor. If the 17 year old wasn't good enough to be in the amateur competition, she wouldn't have entered.

Pretty, lively and tough...I don't care for "mean" chicks, but this babe seems like nothing of the sort. It's hard not to like her. As for her outmatched opponent, I feel bad that she feels bad, but, as others have pointed out, they were "technically" at the same level. I wish they had that stuff in schools over here like in the "good old days." How many of us wouldn't relish the chance to legally beat the crap out of some mouthy high school kid? Here's to the return of corporal punishment!!!

Amen to that!
I found Giant pretty inspiring in that way too. In Gang-mo's world it was perfectly OK to beat your enemy to a pulp. Even in front of crowds of reporters... And even at the National Assembly. Hee!

She is awesome really. For someone who has to depend-on-the-face-for-food (Chinese direct translation), she's really plucky. And she acts so well too. I once watched her saying bout her auditions that she just try whatever the directors told her to do: dance, sing, etc. Gotta give it to her. Awesome.

Thinking back on the time in 'We Got Married' when Li Shi Young had had enough of Kim Shin Young's (the little fireplug) comedienne's antics and put her in her place with a convincingly icy stare ("You're scary." said the little one, whose tv hubby was Shin Sun Rok.) The "threat" all seems so real now...

If she decides to train and make the 2012 olympic team, I wonder if she will turn pro after that?

She may be capable of KO'ing an opponent someday. That would really big even bigger news!
