Anyone else watching Paradies Ranch? I'm really enjoying it!

I really like Dong Joo's characterization. Haven't seen that kind of insecure beta-hero slowly growing into himself too often, and I think it's a big plus in any man's favor if he favors strong women he can admire and look up to. :-)

I am rather enjoying it. I can't believe everything will be resolved in two episodes.

Joo Sang Wook is breaking my heart. The poor man just wants to share his hotness with a girl, and keeps getting thwarted.

Sang Wook has something oddly shifty about him IMO... I know the drama doesn't intend the character to seem that way, but somehow I keep getting "not trustworthy!!" signals from him.

So, you guys can have him; he's all yours. :-)

i agree with you, there's a 'something not right' vibe coming from him...

Can someone tell me who's the hero here....the eyes guy or the shifty guy? If it's the eyes guy, I'm not watching. If it's the shifty guy, I don't mind. Shifty is good. I'd take shifty any day over starey eyes.

0

If you mean Sang Wook with the eyes guy, then he's also the same shifty guy I'm talking about. :-) He's not the hero, so you can watch it. ;-)

The hero isn't shifty at all, and there's nothing odd about his eyes that I can see...

I actully started watching it yesterday & already at the 10th episode !!

Dong joo's & Da ji's flashbacks from when they were married crack me up every time =)

This drama isn't that bad after all : Changmin's hotness & childishness and Yeon hee's stupidity-mixed-with-some-cleverness add to its charm =)

Required fields are marked *

Yep yep same here I really enjoyed it after watching it... at first it was kind of yawn worthy but the last couple of episodes have been pretty great and Changmin has been doing well as Dong Joo-- I like that kind of character that isn't perfect and he also isn't so cold hearted as most k-drama heroes, he's like a big kid who tries to act like a selfish adult but is really a soft teddy bear who crumbles before the one he loves^^
I actually like his acting more than the actress's even though I've liked her in her other projects... it might be the hair...

Ah, the hair. I'm having a hard time figuring out if I'd like her more with different hair. It's either her character, her acting, or her hair, but she's sorta grating to me. Why do these two handsome men love her annoying self so much?

Required fields are marked *

Yes i have loved every second of it. The cute has killed me. In every episode there has been cute. and the crazy possibilities of who could end up with who even though from the first episode the audience has known who the main couple was, has been great. There were at least 5 viable couple combinations in this show. It must be a record for Kdrama. Yeah there are secondaries you know will never get the girl but when you look at the writing of this thing. Everything and everyone seemed possible up until episode 14.

I shall miss MAX TIME. where shall I get my cute? Lank God PIE is back or who knows what I might do.

Hard to believe it's almost over and it's almost hard to tell who Da Ji will end up with. I am really hoping she ends up with Joo Sang Wook, but I doubt it.

Out of sheer desperation, started watching this on Monday (the dearth of romcoms is killing me!); here we are on Wednesday and I'm so enamored with it. One glance at Joo Sang Wook and I was ALL IN. YIKES! What a perfect guy!

Da Ji is less irritating than initially expected--it's actually only the hair--keep waiting for the new hairstyle to emerge and thought the dress up scene would have more positive results. Her cheerful brightness is not as forced as these characters usually are, and she is glowing in a lot of the scenes where Joon Ho is looking at her.

It's interesting how they are unfolding the backstory in lil' tidbits as flashbacks as the affection seems to be growing between the two, unbeknownst to them. Of course they are hoping that we want her to be with Joon Ho, but like Sylvia mentioned, there seems to be a darkside to this dashing prince with the dazzling smile.

Dong Joo is growing on me, slowly. His standing up for Da Ji and the residents (what Gramps really wanted all along) is working on me as well.

Am trying to drag this one out as long as I can cuz there's really nothing out there after this (Sparkling subs are taking a while to come out). Thanks for a place where I can come and rant about this (lack of romcoms) and gush about that (Joo Sang Wook)!

Side note: it was interesting that he had to publicly address his "preferences" in the media this week.

It's really a shame that he's leaving WGM. His time on that show has been fantastic.

And yes, true about the acting. There's something in his delivery that's so wooden. I would really like to see him adlib some of his scenes, because I think a bit of his natural charisma is lost as he's going through a script.

Goguma couple fans here on Dramabeans? Nice :-) It's strange having seen him as the serious, brooding Shinwoo and then getting to know his real personality. He's so outgoing! I think he'd do better in this role, but am still a little worried. He's definitely inexperienced, but he has some potential.

oooo, even im waiting eagerly for this drama...its funny (and i can be shallow at times),but da first time i see a drama with a pretty lead actor (with less than questionable acting chops) i barely notice as im too busy swooning over the eye-candy. its when i rewatch the drama do i begin to notice da lshortcommings in the acting department....haha

I'm (still) not interested in the current dramas airing, so I just may go back in time and watch an older drama.
I'm thinking of watching a Yang Dong-geun drama (because I've just been reading praises about his acting). I haven't watched Ruler of your Own World... maybe I'll start with that.

I'm watching Sunny Happiness in my spare time. TW actors' always seem to bug me because their acting is not subtle at all! Although I can see that Mike He's acting has improved.

Can someone please explain why characters in Korean dramas wear glasses w/o glass? And now it seems to have become a fashion item with idols. I've seen many celebs on reality shows wearing just frames.

0

Required fields are marked *

I have no idea...and can I just say that it causes some funny situations, because the other day my Korean friend literally just reached out and poked her oppa in the eye, because she was trying to find out if there were lenses in his frames, or if he was making a fashion statement!! LOL!!! :D Luckily he actually did have glass in them, or she would have poked his eye out!

well they do seem to carry off these weird (!) styles perfectly....where as we on the other hand look mighty weird n get lots of stare from the people..haha

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

it's probably so that there isn't any glare or reflection from the cameras/crew when filming, but they somehow feel that the glasses are vital to the character and choose to do so without the lenses.

or they just wear them for fashion. people are weird.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

i thought so too, eye glasses gives reflection and glares which might not be good in the camera. It will be too expensive to wear non-glare ones when you don't really need it. If the stars is not use to wearing glasses like Park Shin Yang in all his KDrama, it will be inconvenient when it fogged, it becomes oily when u constantly touch it, etc. etc. So yeah i think that's the reasons why they wear eye glasses without glasses.

Hahaha, i actually really look on the difference of those eye glasses in Dream High and Sign =)

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

lol....so they are really wearing glasses w/o glasses?!.....I had a hard time focusing in the first few eps of Dream High wondering whether Baek Hee and Pil Suk were really wearing glasses or just frames...this was especially distracting in the eps with Yonsama cuz his glasses were huge and had glasses in them

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't know why they do it as a real life fashion statement, but normally on TV, anyone wearing glasses doesn't have actual lenses in the frame. The lenses creates a glare on film making it hard to see the actors eyes and expression, so, they just leave out the lenses.

Required fields are marked *

i think it's just a fashion statement. some people really look good in glasses, but have perfect vision. i know a lot of people think it's silly to wear glasses without lenses but honestly, aren't a bunch of the things we have on our bodies useless and really just there for adornment? earrings, bracelets, basically all jewelry, belts and suspenders that don't actually hold up anything, changing our hair color, ties, tattoos, growing facial hair, hats that don't block the sun, hairbands that don't keep hair out of our face, summer scarves just to add color to our outfits. just have fun with it i say =]

Happy happy Friday, Open Thread friends!

Oh, what a week...have been feeling under the weather, so I holed up in my apartment this week for a couple of days and treated myself to a 9 End 2 Outs marathon.

I loved the drama so much...I'm turning 30 this year and single, and have had my share of heartache and loss this year, so I seriously identified with the characters!! I laughed, I cried...I drank a lot of coffee...and in the end I really felt the catharsis that comes after watching a good drama!

Hope you all are doing well. I will be praying today for the people of Japan...so sad to hear about the devastation there!!!

Just finished this morning, and it still resonated with me and I am approaching 50 (YIKES!)

I gasped and LOL'ed and sighed during this, to my sleeping husband's dismay.

It was nice that we had a lot of time with the OTP without constantly switching to a subplot about father in debt, or something.

Lee Tae Sung was adorable, and you can see why they cast him in Playful Kiss. Is he starring a new drama yet?!

Also nice...no evil scheming ex! I mean, yes, there's an ex...but at least she's a normal human being and not remotely similar to the robotic fem-bots of most kdramas! I loved that the friendships of the whole group were given time, and that it showed how people who are friends can remain so even when they're going through various different stages of life.

The performances by Lee Jung Jin and Soo Ae were just pitch-perfect, in my opinion...they were joyful and touching at the same time, and the chemistry they had onscreen was wonderful to watch.

It made me miss my best friend that just moved back to Korea so much, but I think in a way it was nice to be reminded of what a beautiful thing that kind of guy-girl friendship really is...even if it doesn't end up in a romance.

This looks like something I could have written. I watched a that drama a little while ago, and it really struck a cord, because I am also single, insure about my career choice, and turning 30 this year...

Growing up is not not easy or maybe it's getting harder for me anyway... but it's all about about attitude, I guess. Let's make the last year in our 20s a GREAT one! :D

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah...this is definitely not where I thought I'd be when I was turning 30, but I'm determined to make it a good year nevertheless!

My heart is still over in Korea right now, and it's been hard dealing with that. But I'm making myself start taking action even though I don't feel much like it, and so I'm about to apply for the Graduate Certificate in TESOL program at a university. If I get in, I'll study there for a year and then after that I'm planning to go to work in Korea.

One thing this drama emphasized is the unpredictability of life, and I really appreciate that - the older I get, the more I realize it's about making the most of the plotline life throws in your direction, and recognizing that you can find joy even within the unexpected. :)

I think if you are teaching English, you can probably find other English-speakers to interact with, since there's a large population of English teachers in Korea right now. From what I understand the usage of English in Seoul is pretty high (well, for Korea anyway) but outside Seoul it's much harder to find English-speaking people.

I would think that you might at least want to study a basic level of Korean before you go over - that's what I'm doing, and my Korean friends have suggested it because they say that even though English isn't that hard to find, fluent English speakers are still rare in Korea. At the very least, having some knowledge of Korean (reading and writing, some speaking) will help you get around the country without as much difficulty as you might have otherwise - plus, that way you'd be able to make more actual Korean friends and not just stay in an English-speaking bubble!

There has been some damage from the tsunami on the shorelines, boats, harbors, and some roads are closed. Lots of people were evacuated (including hotels in Waikiki) in low lying areas and are waiting to return home.

I have watched up to Episode 4 Midas. Can't say it is keeping my interest. I was expecting it to be better.I like JH and LMJ acting in their previous dramas, but not this one. Surprisingly there is zero chemistry between them. They were supposed to be an engaged couple in love, but it just did not translate. The plot so far is predictable and boring. Hopefully the pace will up, and get more interesting. I am ready to drop it.

I've been watching Midas, like it. As said in an earlier posting somewhere, Midas is very similar in plot/structure to the Tom Cruise movie, The Firm. The Firm was about a small law firm that laundered money for organized crime. The law firm in Midas supports a rich family. The story seems to be about crossing the double-crossers, up to episode 4 I think, can't determine who/how major players will prevail.

Also watching New Tales of Gisaeng, really like that one, can't wait for each weekend's episodes. It's being recapped on JustDramas.

Looking forward to watching the new Song Il-gook drama, going to wait for a few more episodes. Glad to see something with a little 'meat' after all the 'fluff' of My Princess, Dream High, and Mischievous Kiss, etc.

Watched Bottom of 9th, 2 Outs. It's OK, but like most dramas, could have been tightened considerably with 10 episodes max.

Watched Sunny Happiness, it also wore me out with the shilly-shallying, dilly-dallying. It was a very long trip to get from here to where we knew they would end.

Finished Single Daddy in Love, still don't know what that was about.

Currently also watching Three Dads, One Mom. Cute. Similar to Three Men and a Baby.

Want something that keeps me on the edge-of-my-seat! Something that isn't predictable. Suggestions?

So does everyone know that Kim Soo Hyun's dad was actually the lead singer in a K-rock band in the 80's called Seven Dolphins? I yelled at my computer screen when I read the news, "That's totally Sam-dong!!!" LOL. Now we know where he got his singing talent. I wonder if anyone can find clips or soundbites of his dad singing? I'm so curious to know what he sounds like. :P

Praying for the victims of the Sendai earthquake/tsunami.

Happy Friday everyone!!!!...yay for all those who like me are starting spring next week and have no work to do and plenty of time for dramas!
but there are no current dramas to watch so I'm going to be marathoning a bunch till 49 days start...right now I'm watchin Sunny Happiness and Sons of Sol pharmacy!!....I absolutely adore Sol Pharmacy and their characters, it doeant trump LiB which was the first family drama I watched in terms of directing, acting and story but I still love it and this is the first time I'm wishing I was the part of some fictional Korean household....lol
I wish I was just as into Sunny Happiness though.....Its cute and I can see how it is different from so many Tw dramas I've seen in the past but it hasnt completely drawn me in yet and idk if its because I've been really stressed and cant focus or if its the drama....eitherways I hope I can get into it soon....Also really excited for 49 days after watching the 10 min preview yesterday...it looks cool!....it remind me a bit of Shining Inheritance and Prosecutor Princess in terms of tone so I think that should be a good thing!!!...Anyways happy weekend everyone!!!!

that is exactly my thought when I first saw him in BOF. I didn't like him at first. Idk why. I don't even bother to watch it when it was airing here in our country despite of all the hype it's getting.

But when I watch Personal Taste (I watch because I like the premise of the show) I fell in love with his character. I eventually like him as an actor. He can act. AND he is ridiculously good looking.

I understand that some people like him and some people don't. People have different interest.

I know LMH doesn't need me to defend him, but I can tell you why I would watch him in anything.

Lee Min Ho is surprising.

From some angles, his looks are average.
The perm they had him in BOF was the most unattractive style I have ever seen on a leading man. It shouldn't have been allowed, but somehow he won over audiences even with it.

From some angles, and with the right hair, he is a god.

Despite how young he is, he can take on the aura of a much older and more mature man. I agree with JB about LMH being the main reason BOF succeeded despite its hotmess-ness.
At 23 years old, with no leading man experience to call on, he carried the show.
He started as a model, right? He shouldn't have been able to do this.
He was able to do angry/hateful JunPyo so we all loathed him as much as JanDi, but then, somewhere, we started to see him as sad and lonely.

(I'll take LMH's angry over SSH's any day of the week.)

He also does the "I cannot tell you how I feel, but I love you" face very well. Is the word "conflicted"?

In interviews, he is a big goof with no sense of entitlement, and shares embarrassing stories about himself willingly.

I don't like the CF work that much, because I think it's all one note "Look at how freaking hot I am! I would totally wear this sexy outfit IRL, and all this guy-liner, I would. And see that gorgeous woman over there trying to get my attention with little or not clothes on? I don't."

This was fun!

With a lot of things happening in the world right now (and Im sure in many of your own worlds, too!) I have mixed feelings that there is nothing much that is exciting going on in the kdrama landscape. Bit sad that MP is over but also happy that we can have some semblance of normality in our lives, hahaha.

I've decided to focus now on nutrition, particularly for kids.

So Im reading "Optimum Nutrition for your Child's Mind: Maximise Your Child's Potential" by Patrick Holford and later will chew on "What to Eat" by Marion Nestle.

No, I dont have my own kids...just kids that I care for during my volunteer work. Im trying to find out how we can give better foods that will significantly help them to improve how they learn.

It's exciting to learn about this in the context of how the east is now rising vs the west, oriental medicine and western medicine, and in the backdrop of Tiger Mom/Amy Chua's book, Robert Compton's 20 Million Minutes project/documentary film and Dambisa Moyo's books.

Any life-changing books you are reading these days, OT people?

As far as children, there is a tiny one called Brain Gym that among many things, stresses the importance of water for brain development, and how so many kids tend to be dehydrated.

Another parenting book: NurtureShock, by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman talks about how parents need to avoid non-specific and non-action related praising.

It reminds of the difference between the

English idiom:Good job!

Here's the link to that:

I just finished "Women, Television and Everyday Life in Korea"by Youna Kim, a Korean who teaches at the London School of Economics, based on interviews with women in 3 age groups and 2 social/economic classes. The research was done 10 years ago, but has given me a LOT more respect for the choices made by the women characters in the dramas I watch. Brought out the centrality of family but lack of individual options faced by Korean women, at least 10 years ago.

I asked my Korean tutor about that, cause I also kept hearing what sounded like French. She told me this comes from 그 ("that") and 사이 ("between"), so you get 그 사이에 ("meanwhile" or "in the meantime").

My dictionary writes it as I just did (그 사이에), to mean "meanwhile." My tutor, however, wrote it as 그새 (which sounds more exactly like what I hear) and defined it as "in the meantime" or "already."

I think she was trying to explain that it has the sense of something happening between two other things, or along the way between two actions or states, or interrupting two actions... like you'd say "You're back from teaching already?" with the 그새 coming between "teaching" and "back."

Or the other example she gave (probably more applicable to dramas) is you might say this to someone if they promised they wouldn't gamble or smoke, or cheat on you or whatever... then it'd be with the 그새 coming between the idea of your promise and the gambling (or whatever), and meaning something like "You couldn't keep from doing that again, already?"

Anyway, that's what I understood from her :)

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Now that I'm thinking about this, though, I think I'm going to have to ask my tutor again, cause I also feel like I hear this in response to questions like "Why did that happen?" -- in which case what I hear in French makes perfect sense -- but I'm not sure an answer like "already" or "meanwhile" makes complete sense. Maybe it's just the way the question/answer translate into English...

0

Wow! Thanks for the detailed and still mystifying answer.

Could it be like the French "comme ci, comme ca"?

Like this like that

I have to find someone saying it so I can trace back what type of question is asked.

Required fields are marked *

I am not talking about those ladies. I am referring to the guys that appeared on the list!!

You can pretty much assume that many of the actresses who made to the top, especially those do not attend good university and have some family background are falling prey to those guys!! It is sad, but those guys have the money, power and connection. And those ladies what air time, fame, and money. Hence, it is pretty much an exchange and some of them feel that they were short change or overtaken by guilt, shame and conscience, that's the reasons you see so many suicide recently.

JJY is not the first and never will be the last one!!

0

I know, but there would not be "those guys" if the actresses or whoever were not willing to make the uneven exchange.... The rate is not to their advantage.

Ppl know what's going on and chose to turn a blind eye because of all the "cute"....I'm not a fan of the "cute" for obvious reasons....

0

Which "cute" are referring to? It is best for us to speculate about the "cute". Many actresses' names are now being implicated. You or I can draw up our own conclusion looking at the authenticity of the list and names. But, what I can tell you is that, it will be covered up eventually, and the press will do self censoring, under the name of protecting the Korean waves.

Uneven exchange is very subjective. I think it all voice down to equate lust with greed for money, fame, recognition and popularity. That's the price of aspiring to become a star!!

0

Sorry, it is best we do NOT speculate about the cute!!!

0

Are you serious???? Am I reading you correctly? They have posted names of other actresses!!!! That is just wrong.

Once I read that there was a possible tampering with the letters, I thought coverup and reasonable doubt....

0

True dat about NOT speculating re the "cute"....

0

Yes, in her alleged letter, she alleged some of her seniors who were once advised her to take it easy, because they had far worst treatment as comparing to her. So, names of actresses who attached to her former agency were implicated. Two of them were veterans and one is very popular, and the other one is attached to a very popular husband!!

0

Forgot to add, four actresses from the aforesaid agency had committed suicide in the past 2 years!! Amen!!

0

If this happened in the US, once the wives found out they would divorce their husbands (eventually, after showing their support for the cameras) and take half of whatever he owns for the children....

0

Haha...I have to disagree with your statement. It does not apply to bill and Hilary for the sake of serving the American interest!!! LOL

0

kekekeke, Bill did not "sleep" with that woman. Remember?

0

I think that it is a big mistake to blame actresses for giving in to the pressure of the casting couch. That is really blaming the victim. Men who pressure their subordinates for sex in any workplace, whether in the corporate world, the university, or in the entertainment industry need to face the consequences of their criminal behavior!

0

Good point, i bet those guys will sure have the best lawyer in town to help them to argue along the line of bill, especially the 89-year old Lotte's former chairman!!

Well, how can we be sure of what bill told us, and what's the truth? LOL!!!

0

It is an exchange, I dare to argue that those actresses were not victim!! Those actresses had to ask what 's their own real motive is? If what they want is quick route to fame and money, they really have no one to blame accept themselves. It is an exchange!!

0

I agree it may not be entirely truthful to make any woman who has participated in a casting couch scenario to be a victim. Many do enter into the arrangement freely, greedily, and willingly, with eyes wide open. But that may not be the case all the time. Also consider how so very young many aspiring actresses are (ouch bad sentence). The casting couch mentality is sadly commonplace and agents, etc. may also try to pressure actresses into reluctantly agreeing to trade sexual favors. Furthermore, it's inherently an imbalanced position where the man has the position, power, and leverage. Not all the women are victims, but it still sickens me that there are men who abuse their power and prey on all that youthful desperation.

My heart goes out to everyone affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. I'm not particularly religious at the moment, but I'll pray for them as well.

0

Yes, point taken that some of them were so very young. However, it is an unwritten rule, so one so very young does have some sense of whether they have been forced into it unwillingly i.e rape or simply playing along ignorantly. Furthermore, the question now also involves some veteran actresses. Then, it makes one wonder whether those A list actresses in Korea were mere high class prostitute?

The strange thing is that there were hardly any cases of actresses being rape cases publicize or mere taboo, except what one saw on Dream High?

Imbalance power, position etc is true, but Korea is a country rules by law, and have a criminal justice system which is working, but why these girls did not come forward, but chose a tragic way to end their lifes?

0
11
reply

Required fields are marked *

You know, I don't know that I would consider most cases rape as much as regretted sex, which is a entirely different. But even if it's not rape, repeatedly selling yourself (whether it was completely a free choice or if it was coerced) takes an enormous toll on self esteem that may not be initially apparent. I've been depressed so I know - it's not necessarily clear to oneself that you're depressed and that you need to go find help.

I know the casting couch is something that girls who want to break into the entertainment industry are probably aware of, but at the same time it could be a case of thinking you were ready to do what it took and realizing that you're really not. Perhaps JJY got in over her head, and when she realized how unhappy she was with herself and felt trapped by her past choices. Who knows, really? It could she had other problems we don't know about.

The main reason actresses don't come forward or even privately seek help is because they feel shame, they feel dirty, they feel irredeemable, and the Korean society and press doesn't do much to help. Which is not to single out Korea - victim blaming is omnipresent. You find it in just about any society, it's just that Korea in particular can be very vicious to women involved in sex scandals. The subject is taboo - I was surprised that Dream High went there. Because the problem is so invisible in the public discourse, women are afraid to come forward, worried about their (maybe even their family's) reputations, and don't know where to turn for help. I try not to speculate major stars (in Hallyu or Hollywood) because it would drive me nuts and I can't really do much about it.

0

Required fields are marked *

Tildy that was a very well thought out response. Thank you.

0

Now we have three emotions at play with those "cute"' i.e fear, shame and guilt. Korea is a country which is high in masculine and high power distance. Hence, I believe what JJY did may actually work to shame those guys. The next, I hope there will be some divine interventions to make those guys feel fear and guilty!!!

0

This is sad...but also the reality not only in Korean entertainment but in other countries as well. What's even sadder, or should I say better (depends on how you see it), the people who went through this kind of ordeal in Korea are driven to end their own lives. I say better because in other countries the society/ environment seem to be comparatively more corrupted/ more liberal and so those who are forced or driven to this path just swallow their pride/dignity/humanity and even convince themselves it's alright. They may have not ended their lives but it is no different when dignity and self-respect is lost. The fact that some of the Korean women/men would rather end their lives than live with the shame tells a lot about the remaining dignity of that society.

I think this is the price for ambition and success. The society does not help when audience demand so much from their idols in terms of looks and appearances and when talent managers do not truly take good care of their talents but only treat them as milking cows.

Im no expert on law, but with regards to the young actors/actresses/stars, even if they agreed to it willingly as a kind of fair exchange, is this not considered statutory rape? Because the men/women who victimise them used their positions of power to make them agree to the act. But I guess the age of consent would differ in various countries...

I guess the perspective of you ladies on victim is quite different from a guy perspective. I see it as a deal, a willing buyer and willing seller. The cute feel they were short change, shame and guilt when the deals went sour.

Furthermore, How can it consider statutory rape when the girl actually agreed to do it with a "hope" for something in exchange (whether not to shame the family, out of their own shame or guilt).

If these "cute" has no self love and self respect in the first instance, how can they expect similar treatment from those guys?

Everything has a price, except unconditional love or true love.

I think our perspective changes when we speak about the people who went through this ordeal not as distant idols or stars but as our own friends or family even.

In those cases, we may not just speak about technicalities or legalities, but whether the person they dealt with have abused their power over that person even if he/she was willing to agree to the act for a fair exchange.

Laws are meant to protect the powerless and in most cases those in power go scot-free because they hold all the aces and most of the time the other party is not willing to expose them for shame of exposing also their own gullibility and/or similar dark intentions.

If we are talking about people we love who are driven to this kind of situation, we may exhaust all our resources to ensure that those who took advantage of their gullibility, innocence, or stupidity even, be responsible somewhat for what happened to that person in the end. If not for their gross abuse of their power these people would not be ending their lives in such a tragic way. And even if they ended their lives eventually for lost hopes and dreams at least it will not be because somebody made them a promise that required them to lose their self-respect in the process.

I'm a woman and while not knowing the full details do not see these actors as victims but hostages to their own desires for fame, money and a better lifestyle. Self-respect and self-love can make you not succumb to carnal cravings of the rich and powerful. These men cannot be fully to blame for preying on those who willing come to their dens of lust.

These actors are not my friends or families even though I like or love to watch them on the screen. They are strangers in whom I may take an interest in just to see them again. If they are good, I think providence would have paved the way for them if genuinely good at their craft. The good ones should help each other, but I rather think this is the opposite due to the "crazy" fans out there who will go nuclear to protect their own as if they have any rights. It's all imagined and that is scary what the industry cultivates in the way of maintaining a scoreboard on these ladies (men no doubt want in on this fandom).

This insane pressure for attention, which is milked for all its worth is fueled by the fans. The fans keep this sort of thing perpetuated and some love to ruin lives or think they have some noble cause to help their idols along..... As a spectator in all of this and sometimes a contributor in a drama’s popularity because the “drama” was so good based on the acting, directing and script.

Why should we pity these entertainers who are living comfortably after they pay an entrance fee of "free sex"? They took the easy way to fame and surprise, surprise some men wanted interest on their investments…. There are probably lots of young women still willing to and are going that route even as I type this because they want the name recognition and lofty lifestyles and are conned into being a participant in promoting the Korean wave…. They are martyrs indeed cultivated within this collective society.

hi everyone!

sorry to jump in. i'm new here. my older sis frequents this site and got curious (im using her laptop so...ssshhh!)

this topic sure is very controversial and no doubt extremely debatable. hence many societies would rather just sweep this under the rug for fear of opening up more scary stuff. too hot to handle indeed.

for purposes of discussion only, may i know your point of view on the following...do you agree/disagree?
1. the world is evil and bound for destruction.
2. human beings are basically evil and if given the chance will self-destruct.
3. if people do evil things to others they should be held responsible for it.
4. if people do evil things to him/herself then they deserve what they get in terms of the consequences of their sins.
5. sometimes people who do evil things to others or to themselves do not get the appropriate punishment right away and that is reality but eventually they will get what they deserve unless they ask pardon/reprieve.
6. even if the evil deed is grave if the sinner sincerely asks for forgiveness he/she deserves to be pardoned however the consequences of his/her sins may not be totally eradicated.
7. part of asking for forgiveness is making amends for what you admitted to doing wrong.
7. even if all the above is true/agreeable to you, in the face of all the inherent evil, all good men should still try to fight against evil and try to save the powerless, the children, the abused and try to delay/prevent/preserve those who are on their way to destruction.

i'm asking this because our views on the above will determine how we will view and approach the issue of the casting couch.

and finally, do you believe that we all make a stand for or against something? and not making a stand is in fact already a stand in itself?

sorry for all the questions...hope you can enlighten me some more (maybe i will use this topic for my next term paper in class...arghh!)

SpongeBob is a man. You can tell by the way he writes.

You sound like you have some background knowledge of Christianity. Most of your questions seem based on that knowledge. The word "sinner" is a dead give away... This word can also be off-putting to some, confusing to others.

As to whether you are male or female... Write some more and I may be able to tell.

JJY's suicide case and the police is re-opening the case!! In one of her alleged letter, she claimed she had had sex with 31 guys (some quite big shot) in Korea for more than 100 times.

The 31 names are now circulated on the Internet.

31 guys and more than a 100 times!!!!! gawd, this is really sickening.....
BUT then again this is rampant in most of the entertainment business all over the world.....this may some what be a lil different, but even in the modelling world, models are made to go through these dealings. And at times even males, and not onli females are made to go through this kind of ordeal.I had read a article where an aspiring male(straight) modal had confessed being forced to go to bed with a homosexual designer to get a place in a place in his next fashion show..

Fun with Physics: K Idol Edition

Episode 1 : Gravity Defying Pants

Exhibit A :http://api.ning.com/files/b4UnZQexX8Kbw5NFwGqAcwZ32K*bi4A5Q7KtPUBiWu4_/SuperJunior81ChoiSiwon.jpg

I am very very curious, what is holding up those pants? I have looked very very diligently ;) and I can not figure it out!

Is it the force of friction or tension? I know that some of it has to be is friction, it opposes the downward acceleration of the pants caused by gravity and the mass of the pants itself...but somehow it just doesn't seem enough! I want to know!

Are those magic, holy pants?! Considering that it is Siwon, it doesn't feel too far fetched does it? :P

(Trying to figure out how that pant is staying up is the most fun I had in physics class since the semester started!) :P

Viola, I have a question for you. If there were a fire raging next door, and you look out your window and see Siwon in one window waving frantically at you and mouthing oh-so-sexily SAVE ME FIRST VIOLA, and SSH in the other window tilting his head equally frantically at you and roaring sexily SAVE ME FIRST VIOLA who would you save? You've only got time to pull one guy out one window onto your rope ladder. You can only save one.

Yeah, m'kay. First Viola would save !SIWON. Then if she any time left over, she would run back into the inferno, get some edible massage creams to use on !SIWON, and then run out, leaving SSH in to die in flames.

I'm not sayin' all she cares about it Siwon, I'm just sayin'...yeah, all she cares about is Siwon. Is all I'm sayin'. ;) Heh, that's my girl!

YY, I am surprised that this was even a question! Let me ask you one is return: If it was the choice between saving Grandpa and SSH...who do you save? :P

By the way, I love how you guys wrote Siwon, in all caps with multiple exclamation points and the truly novel way of Lahlita!

While it doesn't capture my feeling wholly, nothing else really can, until they invent the font :
"deep and abiding love vaster than the oceans, strong as the pillars of the earth and burning with the passionate heart of a sun"! :P
But good tries none the less! :)

0

Viola, I am so so sad you're letting me perish in the inferno. You save Siwon whose abs are inferior to mine, and you leave me to be consumed by a cruel raging fire. I weep at your callousness. Pls someone hold my head still. I have been tilting so much and so hard since I read Viola's post that I have no strength to do anything else. I must have tilted 300,000 times since I read those heartless words. My head, my neck, my teeth hurt....but the pain is not equal to that knife struck deep in my heart. Struck, impaled and twisted. YAHHHHHH!!!! *tears off speedo and runs crying into shower*

Dear, dear Don't Call Me Mr. Hand Towel, please don't hide your perfect self and cry in the shower..
It just breaks my heart because I know from personal experience how hard it is hiding in the bathroom/toilet/shower when your heart is breaking (I swore that I'll never go to that place for any reason/a minute longer but for the obvious one) however with you being there....I'll keep you company as long as it takes to hold your perfect head in my arms/laps/where ever you want to put it.

Viola is neither callous nor heartless. She's known for her pure compassionate heart and perfect self. I love her dearly. But you should understand when it comes to Siwon...your superior abs mean nothing. I couldn't tell you here the things she did for Siwon!
And besides she knows I love you, she knows I'll save you (I've been known to have a tendency to save a divine looking man).

So, please stop those tears now. Only heaven knows how taxing that must be for you.
And we don't want you to have puffy eyes don't we?

0

Dear, Mr. Don't call me Mr Hand Towel

I am so sorry to have hurt you! It pains me greatly that you think I am heartless and cruel! But it is love, and only LOVE that makes me blind to your Vast charm ( and I do mean that in all its clever implications :P ) and cruel in my blindness.

After all, "..the heart has reasons that reason can not know..." why else would I choose someone who clutches his bible to to his chest and mutters "kim suh an moo.." if I even walk within five feet of him, over your speedo less self in a shower...*gulp* *fans self*

Please, do not despair. There are so many women who is just dying to comfort you. Take Pipit for example: she is scarred from the time she had to hide in the bathroom from OKie Dokie, because of a slight misunderstanding where she might have ran away with Okie Dokie's husban Henny to a deserted island.. But that's beside the point.

My point is that Pipit absolutely traumatized by the bathroom, and she is offering to keep you company there for as long as you want! Just think of the sheer devotion!

So, forget me and find happiness with a woman who truly appreciates your eyelashes, abs and head tilt. Just think of me as some bad woman you met in an accident and * breath catches on a sob* be *hic* Happyyyyy * runs away crying* :P

0

Forget that Kdrama void we are currently experiencing! We have all the drama we need here on the OT. And if we thing something is lacking, we will promptly create one.

Well done ladies and Hand Towel! And of course, what a very fine picture, SiWon!

0

Also, I knew that a mere raging inferno won't stop you Mr Hand Towel! You would just use your superpower and turn yourself into a Hand Towel that would promptly smother the flames!

But, poor Siwon, he lacks your super morphing powers, so off course I have to save him! :)

How are your associates The Kidnappers by the way? Please send them my fond regards. :)

Aww, these pants! And on this body!!

Very good question, Viola. One would think you are interested in more than navel circumstances.

Seriously, the answer to your questions is both friction and tension. Those two physical properties allow for the pants to stay in place.

Unless you are sitting/standing perfectly still, the movement of muscles under the clothing not only creates friction (surface resistance to relative motion) but tension (the force by which a part is pulled when forming part of any system in equilibrium or in motion).

So the cloth moving against Siwon's thighs, groin, buttocks is friction, while his muscles moving against the fabric, the fabric moving against itself at different fulcrums, and Siwon's muscles actually being taut are all forms of tension.

This physics lessons screams for a lab class ...

because SM is the one who bought the story, so I think they'll put their artists in the production.
Some from SuJu, DBSK ( sorry to say but this means only Yunho or Chang Min ), or Shinee as lead actor... My wish actually Jay of TRAX, but he's too old for this drama... so, probably Minho of Shinee? he's been talking about starting acting career.
I'd like to see Heechul as supporting actor.

As for the lead actress, they'll pick someone from SNSD or f(x), soo....hmmm, Luna? Sulli will act on other drama, so I don't think she'll be here.
SNSD girls are all too feminine as the lead role, IMO

I am addicted to Korean variety shows. Well, for now I'm only following Running Man, Lets Go Dream Team, We Got Married, Happy Together, and Oh! My School.
Plan to watch 1N2D with UTW if there's English sub available.

I think some idols are meant to be in variety shows instead of becoming actors. They're dorky being themselves, and really entertaining.

My most favorite person in variety world is Yoo Jae Suk.
He's so talented in making mood and MC-ing. He always has things to say!
I really like his style, and he can bring up the atmosphere, and he always helps the cast mates to shine.
I like his jokes, and he's not rude.

I learn many things by watching variety shows.

So what's your favorite variety shows? Give me recommendations!

I kind of miss the game show trend of the past, however. It ended sort of around the time that Jiwaza and X-man/Loveletter era ended.

Now seems to be the trend of the "talkies".

Unfortunately, the only variety I have access to are saturated with idols; I love me the pretty but I want to see the other aspects of K-ent as well. That's kind of why I want SGB back haha!

My only big complaints are the bad editing and directing on the reshoots. I know that there are times when Changmin was not available due to schedule. and I realize that he had to do reshoots in places without the original cast, but it should not be that obvious. There have been several scenes where I know he is talking to a camera someplace else without any other actors near him.

Reposting from 1.6.
i have loved every second of it(- the editing and directing blunders).

Yesterday SUCKED BIG TIME.

First.. SBS confirmed the cancellation of their 9pm drama hout. Dammmit.. I want WHAT'S UP to finally make it on the air at least before Lim Ju Hwan enlists. Don't be cruel SBS, he's going away soon, fans need to him and I think he needs this drama too before he disappear for 2 years.

Second.. this "rumor" about LJA and JWS. Ockoala unni... I kinda know your pain. I do not even have words how to describe how this must be for you. LJA?! *shudder*

Third.. this massive earthquake hitting Japan and now tsunami warning all over the Pacific. Last night, we couldn't get hold of our relatives in Japan.. although they live far away from Sendai and TOkyo. It was frightening. Finally they were able to email us that they are OK after about 4 hours since the quake. Phew

Weekend.. what will it bring to us now?

The reports of the fires and floods in Japan
are so horrendous, that it's hard to believe
that it's real.....and not some fake film of toy/
miniature boats and cars.

Anybody know how much damage the actual
earthquake caused first? Was its epicenter
in a remote region) before the tsunami hit?

I hope that God hears the world-wide prayers
being said for the safety of the people caught
up in this nightmare situation....

The epicenter was in the ocean around 150 km's ? from the coast of Sendai. But the quake reached Tokyo as well and was felt all the way in Hokkaido (Northern Japan)
The damage has been enormous, the waves destroyed a whole city 4 million people are without electricity
Thousands of people are still missing and around 300 have died, two trains are missing and a boat with 100 people onboard was taken by the waves.

This day has been crazy with the earthquake in Japan and the tsumani. I haven't been able to contact my japanese friends so I'm a bit worried.

Currently addicted to New tales of Gisaeng, it's a longer drama but I like it.
I'm not looking forward to SM's planned adaptation of hanakimi, BOF was horrid so this could be x1000000 times worse.

i can't stand that he seems to be dating that bitch
and what???!...now she's pregnant...of courseeee. Though I have to admit their kiss in episode 1 was pretty hot...
the other dude that was in Spring Waltz seems really nice and cool though. It would be nice if he gets the girl.
But the guy who has a childhood history with the girl...always yets the girl in kdramas
btw it kinda annoys me how that girl is so fricken naive.

I dont know if anyone else is living in the States, but living here now, I find myself very surprised by everything that is happening around me. The paranoia and fear about everything that is the "other" is very odd for a country that is "all accepting."

Maybe I'll just burying myself in drama-lalaland and ignore the outside world haha.

can you define "other"?

0

Required fields are marked *

Its ok to be shocked, even angry but I do have a question... Who said America is/was "all accepting?" I've lived here all my life and I've never heard such a thing. We have never been an "all accepting" country or culture. We "allow," "ignore," and "tolerate" most anything but "accept" is something totally different.
From your statement, I assume you believed somehow that America was made up of subhumans(not being sarcastic) but its not. We're just people. People who get it wrong and prejudge, make assumptions and say things that make others believe we're uneducated or untrusting.
I can't speak for all Americans, however, I am by no means paranoid or afraid by the "other" things in life, and I don't associate with anyone who is as you describe. But with that said, aren't most cultures and countries concerned and disillusioned about the "other." Are you perhaps equating caution and question with fear(just asking)?

I think its easy to pass judgment when its not your home and you are on the outside looking in.( I know I do it when I watch dramas and films.) How I combat that is to take into consideration the history and culture of that country, my cultural expericence, then tack on the one thing we share, "finite humanity." I don't get along with everyone, like everyone, or understand everyone, whether they live here, speak English, eat meat or serve Christ, like I do. I do, however, have opinions, convictions and moral standards that are deeply rooted and influenced by my cultural background, like everyone else. I am an "other" in almost every sense, therefore, I attract attention, fear and paranoia no matter the country I'm in, and America honestly is no different, but its my home. If you didn't think(know) so, I truly hate you were misinformed.

I don't say this, to imply that its right or fair but its a reality based solely on the fact that people are people, who screw up and do dumb stuff. We have pockets of stereotypic behavior and racist views in all our lives in one way or another. Its one thing I hope we can one day, all accept, then strive to improve.

America is going through a weird time right now. I think most of your fear has to come from the news. Stop watching CNN, MSNBC, FOX, and the like...you will be much happier, believe me.

Focus on individuals. I think everyone stereotypes groups of people, but one-on-one interactions are the best anyway.

Go for a walk or to the bookstore, smile at some people and they will smile back. At least that is what happens in Texas

Buhdoop, that is a very perceptive insight. I think a lot of the "fear" and "hatred' are being generated by a very small percentage of people, but since they are the loudest, and their voice saturates the media, it creates the false perception that they speak for the entire country.

It's an unfortunate fact that our brains are not that efficient at processing information, and if we hear something often enough we come to accept it as the truth.

So, if you turn off the filter of the media, and base your opinions entirely on personal interaction, then you get a different, and on the whole a much happier picture. :)

Basically people are people everywhere, while most of them are good, there is always some unhappy soul who wants to make others as miserable as themselves.

I feel incredibly thankful for this site. I have met some of the most outstanding people here, and all of them are as different from me as it possible to get.

Take Brookeve and I for example: on the surface we are as different as it possible to get; different religion, race, background, familial situation, upbringing, country, and perhaps the biggest difference of all I was raised in NYC and she was raised in the... drumroll... midwest/ heartlands (?) ( my grasp of geography is very shaky :P) *gasp* :p

But, despite all that superficial difference, we have found so much in common that it has become a running joke between us. :)

In all seriousness, the group that we have in Facebook is my second family. Every single one of us there is as different from each other as possible, yet we all share a commonality of experience that is sometimes uncanny.

So, what I am trying to say in this loooooong post is this: Yes, there is some awful people out there but there are lovely people in the world too. And the best part is that the lovely people outnumber the awful ones! :P

What a wonderful thread.
There were times when I completely stopped watching the news as all that I saw were violence, hatred agains some groups and political disputes (they seriously destroyed my piece of mind).
Yes, one on one before making any generalisation.

And yes, there's a FB group for those who love Kdrama. I don't know the rules. But since I'm at the other side of the planet I'm the one who is answering your question. Other members might give a better answer when they see this.
Anyway, like what Viola said deep down inside we're all the same.

I'm lovely too. I am lovely inside and out. I am lovely in my speedo. I am even lovelier out of my speedo. My abs are lovely too. Unlike Siwon's, my abs are real. Siwon's are just painted on. My eyelashes are lovely. They are also longer than Siwon's. And I can tilt. Siwon can't tilt to save his life. Hah!

Mr. Don't call me Mr Hand Towel,
Yes, indeed you are lovely!
Lovelier by far than the pale rose
and the blood-bright sunset too.

But, my love though he be,
lash-less, ab-less and tilt free,
Is lovelier still
Than thee.

For my love is the evening wind
that twines thorough my hair,
He is the breath I take
through all the sounding hours.

I'm American, and I do think there's something kind of disturbing going on in certain circles these days. Whether it's the Muslim "McCarthyism" or the strangely prevalent and persistent belief (even outside the Fox News/Tea Party circles) that President Obama is a Kenyan-born Muslim... I think a lot of people have a lot of fear about their personal futures and the country's future. Unemployment is high, people don't see their standard of living improving, they don't feel that their children will be better off than they are, we hear incessantly about our debt and deficit ... I think a lot of people feel that the American dream as they always understood it is ending or dead, and that does make them very anxious. And I think certain commentators/pundits/politicians/whatever are very eager to capitalize on this sense of fear and anxiety and find someone to blame for it -- anyone that is "other" (which is how we come back to demonization by the current opposition party of those who are not part of its base...)

I could go on and on, but I know this isn't a political thread :)

I'm gonna stick up for America real quick here... because its my country and its the only one that I have any claim to. I'm not European-American or African-American or Asian-American... all I've got is American-American, so I tend to be a little gung ho when it comes to my country.

I live in a military town. Down my street, I've got people of every single color, nationality, creed, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Our kids all play together, and we all sit on our front porches in the evenings and yell at each other's kids. We teach our kids to respect each other and themselves, and we don't really have an 'other' on our street at all.

I also live in the South. Whenever we have an incident, the media always finds the least educated, most toothless hick to interview and make everyone in the South look like they're mentally challenged in some way. Please see the following clips as examples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMtZfW2z9dw or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2jAv6y6y8M&feature=related

One thing you will find about Americans, though, is that we'll talk to anybody. Most of us will even be respectful when we're speaking to others. We're a friendly and affectionate people. Smile a little, be open to some conversation, and I'm sure you'll find that we're a friendly group of people.

Also, I LOVE VIOLA!!!! She is the bestest little sister on the planet! We really aren't the same person, we just play the same character!

thank you guys for all of your comments! I suppose it does ease my concerns; it was an off-hand comment about my initial hurts when I arrived, I didnt mean to offend but I see that I did. I must say that those "hurts" still persist but the transition has been easier.

I was born here but grew up outside the States and now work in the Public Health sector at the state level dealing with security. I guess you can see the kind of circles I move in, why I am surprised by "paranoia" haha.
I dont know much about the regional differences to comment but I'm sure once I step out of the office and face the outside world, it might be better. It might not. Who knows? :D

It's Rachel's post that, at this moment, I most identify with.

Alvina, you didn't offend me in the least. I was hurt too by some ignorant people. What I was trying to say that, yes, there are hurtful people here in America, who will dislike you for your religion/skin color/ orientation or heck which football team you support, but the vast majority of the people will accept you, and some precious few will love you. :) *hugs* I hope things get better for you. :) We are always here in OT if you need to talk more. :)

If what I said resonated with you in any way, I'm glad. I guess what I mean is that -- I think -- the fear and anxiety and even anger a lot of Americans feel when they think about how they and the country are doing these days are not at all groundless, and I can understand and empathize with that. What is very unfortunate is the way some people (are encouraged by pundits and political leaders to) channel these fears into a kind of hateful paranoid xenophobia, rather than looking for practical solutions to America's real problems. Very depressing... in the end, I have to agree with Glenn Beck (although for rather different reasons): "I love my country, and I fear for it."

For the family's that have lost love ones, may you find comfort, and may this tragedy will eventually turn out for the betterment of all the people of Japan.

So far 4 Nuclear Reactors have stop from working, lets hope and pray that a Nuclear catastrophic may be averted, and spare more suffering....... : O {

We need to pray constantly and send our love thoughts to Japan and its people who are still suffering from strong after shocks.

Let's pray that they will soon find relief and that the shaking stops so that they may begin repairs and cleaning up.

The news have shown very little of the conditions the survivors are in. I'm sure many are suffering from the cold and exposure. They may be hungry, thirsty and tired. They may be mourning the loss of loved ones and property and need our prayers to comfort them

Let's pray also for the relief workers. They have a monumental task ahead.

Let's pray that the nuclear reactors be shut down. If a meltdown were to occur, it could also affect other countries in the vecinity (China, Korea).

I woke up today as the Japan news was breaking. I watched live as that solid wall of water smash into Sendai. It was a horrible way to start the day. I was glued to my TV for the greater part of the day. *sigh*

There is also a minority protest here in Saudi Arabia (I wrote "minority" cuz Shiite Muslims are a minority here). It's nothing big really.... I hope it won't continue. We're all under an unofficial curfew and the govt used cloud seeding to stop further protests. I think it's kinda smart. It's raining heaps here.

It's been a slow but crazy week altogether though. I'm thankful for Big Bang's comeback stages and the acapella version release of their EP. KBS Music Bank is pissing me off seriously but I'm still thankful Big Bang is doing well.
