Oh no, we’re losing another one: Im Joo-hwan (Tamra the Island, Frozen Flower) is about to begin his military service, and will enlist on May 17. He’ll receive five weeks of basic training, then be assigned to active duty.
It’s hard to believe he’s 29 with that baby face of his, but he’s an 82er, all right. Im plans to enlist without a farewell press conference or other send-off event, which means the last we’ll get to see of him (aside from the customary walk/photo op outside the training center) is his movie with Ryu Seung-beom and Younha, Suspicious Customers. And, if we’re lucky, his campus musical drama What’s Up, which was supposed to have aired this spring but has been held back indefinitely. (Don’t hold your breath on that one. *cries*)
So say your goodbyes to Park Kyu, and get ready to wait it out for the two years he’ll be off. Sigh.

Totally agree with you that he looks like he’s 17 or 18. Do check out his performance in “Tamra Island”. He was superb in the role. You wouldn’t regret watching it.
If possible, watch the 20 episode version. The 16 episode version is very good. But, the longer version is even better because many of the minor storylines have closure. And, there is a different ending for one set of characters.

Yes, he’s the guy. He was so good in it…
how do things go with army duty for celebrity young men? do they get deployed to high risk areas? is it possible he can die from his tour of duty? I know south korea from time to time has issues with their neighbors, but are we likely to see a news bulletin “hyun bin along with other soldiers killed by suicide bomber”? Also, why don’t the women serve too. I think national service should be voluntary and if not mandatory for all able bodied people of the age of majority (18, 21 whichever). Personally, I wouldn’t serve but it really benefited my mother and one of my girlfriends.
Technically, South Korea is still at war with North Korea, thus the compulsory service. There was talk of reducing the time served in the military, but I think that was called off the table last year because of increased tensions between the two countries.
Women are allowed to serve on a volunteer basis ( I think more of a civil patrol thing but here I am not sure). It’s kind of like American selective service. Men are required to sign up for the draft, but for women it’s all voluntary.
It depends entirely on the service and the star. So, if memory serves, Won Bin served on the DMZ. Gong Yoo served at a military radio station. Hyun Bin is in the Marines and is serving with a regular unit which could indeed get into harm’s way. Some are serving in an entertainment unit, and at least one is serving in the MPs in Seoul.
Hyun Bin volunteered to go to the island where N.K. bombed a while a go. He chose to go the reg. track and not the “easy” military life of a celebrity (they can go the “entertainment” route)
For the record, Gong Yoo spent sometime in the DMZ before he move to the radio station.

Yup really, he’s only got a small role and I think you only see him briefly in 2 episodes, but that is definitely him.

Ok…just when I rediscovered him. First glimpse I had of him was in Love Letter where they noticed his resemblance to Chae Yeon.
