Happy Friday!

What an ending to 49 Days! I do have a mentally fulfilling May thanks to the drama :)

I didn't like the ending... Love the cast, writing, etc. they did an excellent job on keeping us all on our toes until... well, you know... the end... Sigh... ... ... ... :-(

I sure hope that from this the cast can get some additional work. I would love to see Bae Soo-bin as a romantic lead in a comedy drama. He did so well as an evil second lead.

I'm sick of seeing bae soo bin as a second lead! I guess he was first lead in temptation of an angel but that drama wasn't really about romance. Have you seen it unnie?

0

I would love to see Scheduler as the main lead in another drama! He rocks!!

0

Temptation of an Angel is another on of the dramas on my watch list... is it any good? Bae Soo bin looks really hot in the stills! :)

ANd thank you MJP, for not liking the ending too... i feel so many people are caught up in the poetic beauty of the writing, that they forget that, well, she DIED. And Death is irrevocable, whether in reel life or real.

0

ahjummabunny,

I haven't seen it, but I wasn't sure so I checked the ending and it was starting to suck me in so I stopped before it was too late. The premise seems pretty good and in the four minutes I watched of it Bae Soo Bin was serious, since it is a melodrama. It reminded me of a soap opera though.

0

bourbon,

Temptation of an Angel was sucking me into it within four minutes of watching it. It seemed pretty good. I am not sure I would watch it because it seemed very serious. I like comedy or romantic comedy or action or science fiction. Melodrama is pretty much last on my list.

0

Well neither am i really, but the 49 days has left me with such strong withdrawal for BSB that i don't mind sitting through a melodrama!

0

Bae soo bin sobs like a baby when he met his mother. I could feel his shame and regret. So touching.

0

The Scheduler has left now let's bring in his best buddy the City Hunter!

That might be good after the depressed-fest that was 49 days. I always have to watch a fluff piece like KungFu Panda whenever I finish watching a sad or poignant movie like American Beauty.

Although I enjoy the show, it will never be a favorite of mine. The episodic set up of this show reminds me too much of Full House. (Not the Korean one with Rain! You know...the one with the Tanner Family in San Francisco...the show that made the Olsen Twins famous.) Each show is a daily lesson of kids and family life. Don't expect any deep themes from this show.

I like that charles in charge, old sitcom-my vibe. There are some kdrama moments and also some truly funny moments ( the ones with the mom's suitor). But mostly I love to see seo ji suk's mouth. Is that strange? I love his mouth!

0

I'm watching it on the side (at epi7 now)...but I can't say I love it...it feels like a sitcom maybe because of the shorter length (45min per epi) and the plot more family orientated. Plus not buying the 2nd lady crush on the male lead...I go urghhh...but her secretary is funny.

Just a rather so-so drama...if not for the cute kids I would've dropped it.

I know that Viki was subbing Manny and then all of the sudden, it's gone... completely pulled out of their system.

Then I see it advertised on Dramafever, who is never timely on releasing subbed episodes. They are pretty proud of the fact that they are up to Episode 8.

I know that Dramacrazy was piggy-backing off Viki, so they had to find other links for subbed episodes.

I have kept up with it RAW(we are up to Episode 12, but am waiting for the subs...

Have I ever mentioned that I am an American and we are raised on instant gratification???

I'm waiting... Patiently... For an American...

Here I am, see the link below, patiently waiting for the subs...

i love manny!! I love the fact that they didnt stretch the romance between ahjumma and many (sorry, cant seem to get their names) LOL

But yeah loving it, the guy is just so hot and his hairstyle seemed to gradually improve as the series went on and after janice had her hair cut i have to say she looks beautiful too!! I am really happy that the mom straightened her hair, i really hate it when the heroine has really bad hair and they dont change it til the last episode *cough* *paradise ranch* *cough* and she is just soo beautiful after the change!! And i LOVED the way that he confessed!! Gah, he is so cute!!

It has its flaws like incompleted storylines but i think that i am being unpatient and that i should just wait for the new episodes!! Only FOUR left (if total is 16)!!!

Ya know, cuz of all the CSW frenzy going around I've been hearing a lot about city hall lately! I personally couldn't sit through Kim Sam Soon, cause Kim Sun-ah... well her voice just irritates me. Very shrew-ey. I'm not saying she isn't a brilliant actress, because she is... but. That. Voice. NO. :( Had to watch she's on duty on mute. And plus, I could not click with the character... how could she lose all that spunk and awesomeness just cause the guy leaves her? X|

So point being, is City Hall worth a venture? I have the trusty mute button :)

city hall is absolutely worth it. My sisters and I describe her voice as country bumpkin-y! By which we really mean something you don't want to know. WATCH CITY HALL!

Also, temptation of an angel is one of the most circuitous dramas ever. I started out rooting for the girl getting revenge, while feeling sympathy for the poor guy who will be ruined. Then, rooting for the guy as he tries to get revenge and feeling that the girl is getting what's coming to her, and then feeling sympathy for her and feeling horror as well. It is somewhat satisfying and has many 49 days similarities now that I think about it. I like dramas with redemption or appropriate come-upance but I think the writers in this drama don't.

the thing is, the drama moves very quickly and it is all out makjang. you're not fooled into thinking everyone is normal and then super revenge plot. when it starts almost all of the cards. it is really well written and even the "bad characters" are sympathetic. I haven't seen it in awhile I tried to get my sister to watch it with me but we had way too many other dramas for her to catch up on.

0

Country bumpkin, eh? Of course I'm going to ask! :) I've never heard anyone use 'sseki' as many times in a sentence as her! :D

And i could do with a little makjang right about now... I've got nothing going on! No cute boys (Pantyman is by no means a mere BOY!) or anything... life is at a lull, before le exams. Le sigh.

bae soo bin is really cute in that drama. I mean attractive! that kind of woman usually spends time near water to greet sailors and in my country the main ports are in the rural areas. I like kim soon a a lot. she's like your mom's colourful friend.

0

yes CH worths it. the 3 first episodes are rather comedic ones but after episode 4 you'll be shaken. this drama has depht, after watching it i wish many politician will be as Shin Mi Rae, i wish i could be as brave as she is too. and it has the Most Romantic story ever
KSA and CSW made the perfect couple, i was swooning and crying and laughing out of pure happiness because of them. the chemistry between them is awesome.
And CSW is the most sexy politician ever!!! (though he makes me suffer a lot because of his morals)
Mi rae and Jo Guk are my most beloved characters ever

Really? Ep3? I didn't really get into series until episode 10.

For me I stuck with it because there wasn't much to watch after Secret Garden (and Take Care of Young Lady wasn't holding my interest). So, I picked up CH since it was suggested very highly in a previous OT.

0

Holly, it was after epi 3....em the end of epi 4 to be exact...whr the dance scene was the cliffhanger...I kept checking back the forums to see if I got the RIGHT drama...then I notice most said the first 4epi was forgettable so I persisted despite my doubt...and voila was finally rewarded. :P sorry it took you that long...LOL

0

Totally. When watching this drama, all I can think about is, "Are the politicians in my country like this? Which one is real? Which one is fake?" Your words are right: I WAS shaken. I cried & laughed and squealed in glee with them, I worried with them, I wondered about the future with them... And the epic dance... By CSW & KSA... & the other one in the last episode (no spoilers here!) (wink,wink)...

This drama really did change my outlook on politics. And it all started here on dramabeans!

It was a constant race between me and YouTube's mute button on one side, and Kim Sun-ah's mouth on the other: every time i saw it open, BAM! button pressed! And every time GY formed a sentence, BAM! I could find the strength to bear KSA for five minutes. :)

Every time he came on screen though, it would coincide with a text sent to then boyfriend: "Why aren't you more like Gong Yoo!?" But then when I saw S-Diary in all its gratuitous-sex-scenes' glory (raaaaawwwrr!!) Said boyfriend only received the texts : "Why AREN'T you Gong Yoo?!"

Needless to say... that relationship didn't last very long. :\ I blame the Yoo and his nekkidess! Anyone seen Finding Mr. Destiny? Raaaawwrrr once more!

This CYHMH one has spoilers through ep 14.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-hr9ao0gT8

Kim Jae Won doesn't play a "mainstream" character in this one. He is tough to figure out, and his relationships with everyone are twisted. If I break his features down, I cannot find anything that I could describe as particularly pretty, but, ah, when he smiles, holy sheets, it kills me.

I think they found a role to suit his style. Because Dong Ju is deaf, that fact is not widely known, he ignores a lot of people and has to be on guard constantly against being discovered. The tension is wonderful. A "mask like" face is exactly what he shows most of the time. So when he lets his real emotions show, it is devastating.

Absolutely addicted to this show. I only started watching it recently, but man did I get sucked in.

Really? I think the parts with Grandma and the neighbors are the only real light-hearted parts (even though it does get sad sometimes) of the drama. If I skipped them, I think I would go crazy with all the angst.

Dong-joo, Jun-ha, and Tae Hyun-suk have the weirdest relationship, imo. Well ok, it's just Jun-ha and Hyun-suk that creep me out. After watching ep. 14, I think Jun-ha might finally start to realize his "mother" is not looking out for his best interests.

Required fields are marked *

Actually, I do think it is a "good" drama. You must have really high standards LOL.

I do tend to skip the business jargon but it's so endearingly touching, the scenes with the family. Some characters tend to over emote (to the point that some scenes---ie. the grandma going after JH---are more amusing than they should be) but, refreshingly, the character's emotions ACTUALLY MAKE sense to me.

My favorite aspect of the entire drama, however, is that fact that DJ is soo refreshingly different from other lead males in drama land.

He's a chaebol but not a genius. He's deaf. He's nice. He loves his brother but isnt too fond of his mother. AND, he stands pretty much alone. Other than Kim Ji-Hoon's character in Wish Upon A Star (who, in fact, DID love his mother) I havent seen a male lead character so refreshing.

Another plus? JH did the piggybacking, and DJ is the one who tends to faint all the time LOL. :D

Also, JH/DJ bromance? Havent seen one that CUTE since KiBum/Yunho (High Kick). :D

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Totally agree - cutest bromance ever!! LOL

And DJ is really a refreshing male lead to me. The scenes of him alone appreciating the world around him silently - strangely poignant to me.

I find the fact that DJ kinda dislikes his mom while JH really likes his mom an intriguing setting. Understand the latter but am really waiting for the former to get unfold - like how DJ will resolve his mixed feelings towards his mom. The "normal and easy" setting would be the son being all protective and supportive to the victim mom but in this drama no it's not the case. Mom is somewhat like a victim-turned-villain yet not-so-villain as dad-who-made-mom-a-victim. Strange, but intriguing.

I actually really really like Mom in the first few episodes when she's playing the happy-like-a-spoiled-girl-yet-am-already-a-middleaged-mom character. Quite an interesting setting for a mother role and in fact quite cute. Then she turned all scary (though not impossible to understand)... perhaps it means her acting is really good that it shows all the creepy side of a woman who faced such cruel facts...

wasn't the mom also the mom of Lee Minho in Boys over Flowers? she was so mean and very much looked it in that drama. so yes, she can act.

Add me to the list of the addicted! It really is a strange show but it is the cute relationships between Dong-joo and Woo-ri and also Woo-ri's dad and DJ that really keeps me coming back for more.

I do feel bad for poor Seung-chul though. I hope he can find himself a lady love!

The business storyline is really blah to me though so I tend to fast-forward through those scenes. If that was cut I think it would go from a decent drama to possibly a great drama.

Does it mean I have to like it? Hell No.

If I wanted to watch a tragedy (or something with a tragic ending), I would've done so. LOL. I guess I'm just butthurt because, personally, I see so much sadness in real life that I turn to dramas for a HAPPY ending. To me, no matter what people arge, 49 Days wasnt happy. Good Morning! I'm enjoying watching "Lie to Me" thanks to Dramabeans!

I have a couple questions about Kdrama insults. What is the traditon/meaning of insulting someone by throwing water on their face or pouring salt on their head?

Thanks DB for inspiring me to learn Korean on my own since our local university doesn't offer Korean.

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm guessing the water is to wake the person up or bring to their senses. In some cultures/religions the stair or entry cleaning with water is a way to get rid of the bad spirits. Salt is used for a similar purpose. In school we silly 11 year old girls decided that one of the older security guards was an 'old h'ag' ( a blood sucking succubus) We drew a chalk line around her guard hut and sprinkled salt along the cat walk.
My parents weren't superstitious so I didn't really believe she was an old h'ag' but I think the other girls did.

LOL... the inspiration behind it was that it sounded "happy".

I was sitting at my Drs. office and noticed the logo and the name on a notepad and decided that I liked how it sounded. I had no idea what type of medication it was until people kept asking if it worked for me.

Hence the inspiration for my online name. ^.^

Thanks for the explanations on the insults.

I did know that throwing water on someone’s face is a universal insult but since it’s used so often in Kdrama’s , I wondered if it had a different meaning behind it.

The totally foreign insult to me was the salt poured on the head… and I love that it implies driving away “bad/evil” spirits!

Now I can relish each tossed glass of water and salt thrown at someone at your door or in your house!

0

Required fields are marked *

I think throwing water on one's face is a form of insult that is common to many cultures - except for festivals involving water splashing/spraying. :) In some places/countries it is considered an assault (crime) probably due to possible unique consequences to health (the recipient may have a condition that can be triggered by the water or the surprise) or safety (due to proliferation of electronic devices that many of us just can part from, which may cause electrocution when wet). For one, it causes inconvenience to the recipient because the person gets wet. Also, I think it also means something like you're throwing the person's deeds or words back to his/her face. It also makes people shut up - at least momentarily, until the person recovers from the surprise and gets even angrier.

As for throwing salt, I've heard that in Korean culture it is done to drive away bad spirits. So if done to a person, the recipient may be considered a bad spirit or had just received a quick form of exorcism.

So far, I have Best Love and Lie To Me in mind. But I'm thinking if City Hunter and Romance Town are gonna be worth the sleepless nights and office sneak peeks. Or if I should watch Baby Face and Manny too.

So happy to see you!
So so so so so so so so so so so so so happy!

My votes:

Best Love

I am enjouying Twinkle Twinkle - but it is at 27/50 this week, so it'll be hard to catch up.

I also <3 Can You Hear My Heart. Child actors drew me in and the grown-ups kept me there.

I think Lie To Me will be OK once it takes off a little more.

49 Days? I guess.I'm still too sad to talk about it. Not in a good way.

Welcome back my friend to the Shows that never end.

Happy to be back and to see you too! :) I see a lot of new names around here.

Okay, so I'm taking your advice to watch Best Love next. Gotta have faith on the Hong Sisters. :)

And oh-em-gee. You just made my short list longer with Twinkle Twinkle and Can You Hear My Heart.

As for 49 Days... I still can't process a proper thought either. Maybe next week, I'm gonna be able to say something about it. :)

So I'm back to KDramas Anonymous. :) Glad you're here too. What with these frequent relapses? So Lohan-ish.

Yeah... I was busy. And recovering, cuz I got sick - big time. Hemoglobin got low and I caught a respiratory problem. Anyway, I'm good now. I just hope my KDrama relapse won't bring back the problems.

And I also hope that I don't get blamed again for the KDrama characters' jumps to the "other side." And no, I'm not in cahoots with the Sche-du-lah. I'd rather be scheming with Kang-Ah. ;)

I will keep you in my prayers, and feel selfish that you are better and came come out to play.

Now that you have seen the light and de-soberized yourself, Izzie Lohan, you really need to be watching Best Love with us. It has all the things you like to dissect, flawed hero, brilliant acting, clever script, but this time we also get a SUPER DUPER leading lady, too.

CYHMH, I think, will end up being the most fascinating when it comes to character development and interaction. There is sooooo much going on between the characters on zillions of levels. I find I watch and re-watch, and then say, "Oooooh, wth did THAT mean?" "Why is she acting like that?" "OMG, what is he thinking?" I think the screenwriter is known for this.

Softy, because she couldn't resist, is live transcapping it over at RebelSouls, so you can go over there and hang out, too. She is a godsend, I tell you!

Glad to know you're ok now, izzie. Take care.

I write poems when I'm inspired by Moments. Izzie's return is such a Moment. I have much to learn though, fortunately wise Jomo is here to guide me. Jomo's written a whole anthology of verses devoted to a towel. I plan to write TWO anthologies.

0

Thanks for the well wishes. :)

@Jomo: The way you're describing the dramas is making me more eager to watch them. (Chugs a handful of vitamins.) Okay, so it's Best Love on Priority One, and then CYHMH. (ducks and covers ears as I hear people scream "Romance Town.")

@YY: Aww... I'm so honored. :) And you can count on Jomo for the poetry mentoring, I tell ya. ;)

So... the Towel lives? (grins)

Aaand, goodluck on the TWO anthologies. I hope they don't involve Grandpa. :)

Romance Town.I've just finished ep 4.It's doing a great job with the plot and the lines and the potrayals of the maids-quite sadly spot on.

Greatest Love and CYHMH is not to be missed. The 3rd has to be Romance Town.

Happy Friday all!

Whew! 49 days finale! the whole drama was quite awesome. I just added to the list of my all-time favorites :) We were on a cliffhanger every end-episode but the ending was still satisfying! Though, as mentioned in the recap, we were made to watch impossible made possible, irrational made rational, why can't they just do it till the end? I just can't remember but there was one episode where Yi-kyung said she was abandoned because of her brother, well if i remembered it right! Nonetheless, the twist was still ok... over-all i would not trade it with any other dramas around. I feel like i will have the same "lovedramasickness" the way i did when dream high ended. ***sighs***

On to the May dramas, Best Love is getting really good, as in, really really good ( 49 days still the best!). I didn't imagine that something poignant and some dramatic scenes in it. I thought it would be all fun and fun. But i'm loving it!

Romance Town is rocking it too! I'm loving Jung Gyu Woon. Song Yuri is doing good too...

This will be tough fight this May.

Oh and btw... softsubs of these dramas are available at http://www.darksmurtsub.com.

Here's my take on Yi Kyung being abandoned because of her brother.

There have been real life cases in which women who can't or don't have children and desperately want them, have abducted other people's children. The woman watching Ji Hyun, Ji Min and their mother must have taken Ji Min (Yi Kyung). That woman must have later given birth to a son and decided that Yi Kyung was a burden because now she had her own offspring and decided to "throw her away".

I don't think it took that long for the kidnappers to get rid of Yi-Kyung since she was wearing the same clothes and carrying the same bag that she had on when she was parted from her parents. Maybe the negotiation just went on for a couple of days, and then the kidnappers found another kid from probably a richer family who paid off - which made them decide they don't need to bother with Yi-Kyung's ransom anymore.

I'll have a good laugh if one of the kidnappers turns out to be Kang Min Ho's father. Oh these intricate webs of KDramaland.

The character name of Cha Seung Won in Best Love/The Greatest Love. Dokko Jin aka PANTYMAN
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here are a couple of my old posts and one from Joy to give you a brief overview:
-----------------------------------------------------------------

75 MJP May 19th, 2011 at 9:55 am

Do you love PANTYMAN?

It seems as if many are torn between PANTYMAN and Pil-Soo.

My new love is the character PANTYMAN!!! Oooohhhhhhhhh!!! PANTYMAN is so:
cocky (talkin’ stuff!) and
child-like (temper tantrums “My Panty!!! My Panty!!!”) and
manly (with or without the “cow” 소 ) and
virile (well, we’ll just leave this to your imagination ) and
energetic (pursues his girl all over town) and
vigorous (get’s his heart pumping quite frequently) and
sexy (does multiple shower scenes) and
masterful (able to talk his way out of any situation) and
forceful (declares his emotions, “Ding Dong!!!”)
---------------------------------------------------------------

85 Joy May 19th, 2011 at 12:30 pm

Does anyone think his makeup is too shiny/oily? I thought it was the cow moustache that made him look sleazy at first but he still looks a little greasy w/o it. The slurring of the words doesn’t help.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

85.1.1 MJP May 19th, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Mmmmm, PANTYMAN is “shiny”, “oily”…

Ooooohhhhhhhhh, the goose-bumps these thoughts have created!!!

That means that one could “massage”, “caress” his finely formed body from head to toe.

But let’s go oh so slowly, since he is “shiny”, “oily”…

Uuummmmm, those muscles….

Can you feel the lines, his curves, his sinews…

Your hands covering EVERY INCH of him!!!

Becareful now…

Aaahhhhh, we like him “shiny”, “oily”…

I have a feeling that actors/actresses always have to hide behind a facade in order to survive their jobs. Have you ever watched videos of some of the "fans" of celebrities?

Here is one that tells the whole story.

So, there's an Underwear Guy for every season? In the 1st Quarter, we had Mr. Hand Towel and his Speedo. Now we have a Pantyman.

Should we call Hyun Bin as Secret Garden's Bra Guy? :) Remember how he effortlessly put on that bra for demo?

Who's next? I wonder. Will we have a Nightie Guy this summer?

I thought I would really like Romance Town but I am really skeptical about the whole "winning the lottery" thing. That's not really what I expected and it doesn't seem like it's leading to a good place.

Lie to me is getting better as it goes. I can't wait for the angst. Haha...

happy friday (regular appearance?!? no, not yet...) all! Not to harp on a subject that is so last week, but I got to respond to a belleza comment from the previous week's open thread.

Belleza, you said last week on open thread (see 41.10 belleza May 19th, 2011 at 11:07 am), that Asian American culture breeds beta-male-ism. Hum.. Oh Belleza, we seem to be forever fated, forever destined to remain apart... Reminds me of a certain Bora and Binnie (err, Tae-Woong)...

I guess my starting point is that Asian American boys learn to become men from their fathers, who were generally:

1. first-genners who came off the boat or airplane;
2. less than fluent in English;
3. financially poor;
4. finding themselves in a place of low-level hostility and racism which
5. made them unable or unwilling to transmute their cultural heritage to adapt.

These first-genners, if I may speak over-broadly and over-generalization-ally, were either hard-core or forced to become hard-core. Consider them like pioneers coming into a land that didn't really want them there. But yet they flourished by working and/or studying all the time, by developing a single-minded-ness to carve out a niche for their family. See, the first-genners chose to come to America, and so were self-selecting to being the most focused and determined.

But one unforunate consequence of this hard-core-ness was the effect on their families, on their wives and on their children. The most influential person in a young boy's life is his dad. And first genners made pretty brutal dads. If there ever was an alpha-male in the young second generation Asian American's life, it was their dad.

But that doesn't make the second-generation Asian American males "beta-males" in general - it just makes them beta-males in relation to their fathers.

Wesley Yang may believe that that kind of father-son relationship fostered in the Asian American home carries over cross-culturally, but I doubt it.

I think it may be decades before the full ramifications of how much real damage Asian American first gen fathers have done to their children becomes fully known, but at least, the benefits of such upbringing seem to be out there for glorification and/or stereotyping.

Required fields are marked *

the father you described is a common immigrant father. I'm not sure if it's race specific because I rarely think of myself as a certain race, but the beta-male is a possibility from such an upbringing. Thinking of my own situation my father was domineering to make us people who fit but stood apart. But I'd always been on the outside of the culture (our religion separated us from most things ) but I still did fit culturally. I didn't cow however and I'm living quite as I please but my younger brothers don't stand up to him nor are they as motivated to be individuals as I was. Not even on the sly.

Required fields are marked *

I would agree that the upbringing you describe is more common to the immigrant family as a whole and not specific to Asian Americans. And not specific to Immigrant Fathers either... the moms are super hard-core too.

Funny thing, I happened upon a documentary last week about Asian Americans in the movies that touched on the same subject of the Asian Americans man's psyche. I think it was called Chinese in the Movies or something along those lines. The men interviewed discussed the experience of being so conspicuously different, coupled with the stereotypes they were constantly faced with both in life and in the media (nerdy, subservient, weird, and ALWAYS completely desexualized) led to big grapple with issues of identity and self-hate. I think that's probably more to blame for the "beta-male" mentality than having an Alpha Male as a father.

To be honest though, I haven't really observed that mentality at work in my generation (late 70s/early 80s kids) at all. At least not wit the guys I grew up with or went to college with.

Required fields are marked *

I am so glad you returned to give us more insight.

It is interesting you use the words "self-selection" because I was thinking the same thing.

The challenges, and hopefully rewards, of uprooting your life and transplanting it across the pond, are not for everyone.
So whether they are Asian, Irish, Italian, Russian, Pilgrims, etc, these men were relentless in their drive to better their lives.

Taking the idea that everyone's strength taken to the extreme becomes a weakness, these men could not ALSO be nurturing, and survive.

0

Required fields are marked *

"But yet they flourished by working and/or studying all the time, by developing a single-minded-ness to carve out a niche for their family."

Indeed, and it's what the majority of 1st generation parents tell us from an early age. However, there's another side to this. After the war, the majority of Asians who came here were college students. They weren't business owners, established white collar professionals, or entertainers. That's a crucial distinction because the latter group already had to use social acumen and some form of leadership prior to coming here. They carry that into the immigrant experience, whereas the college students had to learn it the first time, while acclimating to a new language and culture. The lesson is very different. The former immigrant tells their children "work hard for others." The latter says "work hard for yourself." Now, it goes without saying that the latter group is extremely rare (such as the Armenian or Iranian populations.)

Asian Americans blame their "desexualization" on geek/nerd culture. But it's, really, herd culture. Subscribing to a cartoon notion of masculinity (i.e. "hip hop") doesn't change that

.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Is THAT what Wesley's article is really about? The desexualization of the Asian American male?

If so, he's got a round-about way of putting it. But at least in that regard, he's right.

Asian American males may in fact be desexualized in American culture. Well, maybe more accurately, Asian American males are rarely put into a sexual context.

It's been 42 years, 5 months and 28 days since we had white Captain Kirk kissing a black Lieutenant Uhura (compelled, but a kiss is still a kiss, sorta).

And while you have females of Asian heritage often finding love interests in non-Asian counterparts (Lucy Liu, Gong Li, Kelly Hu, Grace Park, etc.), it is rare to find the reverse.

Odd?

Hello all.

What a week of drama, hey!

My eyes are sore from watching this week's dramas* and all that crying that came with the last 2 episodes of 49 Days. I've learned to have my tissues and eye drops always within reach:)

Is anybody out there still watching New Tales of a Gisaeng? There was a lot of movement in the storyline in the 33rd episode-very exciting. So looking forward to Sa Ran being 'found'. And as always loving the relationship between Son-ja and Sa Ran's sister.

Also any All that Glitters/Sparkling Sparkling followers out there? Loving the show even though I'm relying on updates from others rather than watching subbed versions as the subbers seem to have been busy elsewhere.

*I was watching New Tales (as above), Best Love, Lie to Me, Romance Town, All that Glitters/Sparkling Sparkling and some others.

Well, thanks again to the Dramabeans Team for keeping us in touch with the dramas and each other.

All the best for the week ahead and newcomer, City Hunter.

I haven't made a lot of them myself, but I watch a couple of youtube channels regularily that have a lot of wonderful korean recipes. They are aeriskitchen and Maangchi (just search for them on youtube). Maangchi also has the website Maangchi.com (just click on "cooking") where a lot of people leave useful tips and their experiences with the recipes.

Oh and if you want something drama specific try kdramafood.com, they don't have a lot of recipes yet but it's fun because they sort it by which drama it appeared in and talk a little about the scene and stuff.

Good luck!

I am currently enjoying the plethera of Kdramas. Which one is currently your favorite(s)? I think I am enjoying Best Love's humor with the great cast and Kim Jae Won's handsomeness and superb acting ability in Can You Hear My Heart. Then there is Manny and You're So Pretty and Sweet Palpitations, oh and Lie to Me. I had to cut three out of my lineup because it was just too much.

But you know who I would really love to see in another Kdrama??? Jung So Min. I am really missing her since Playful Kiss. I know she is in college, but I hope she does another drama this year.

Yeah, I miss them of course. But I've seen them a couple of times, when they've come for a meeting for work or whatnot. Actually what I'm really looking forward to is seeing my grandmother. We lived only a short drive from eachother (I'm not from the city) so especially after I got my license, I'd go up there all the time. Help her with stuff around the house, mowing her lawn etc. Usually in the evenings, when I had time to stay and talk, or on the weekends if we were baking/cooking something time consuming.

My grandmother is the person I aspire most to be like in life. Hard working, fair, enough stubborness to will her way through anything, incredibly kind and giving, never holds a grudge, and whenever you try to give her a compliment she brushes it off with a simple "Well it's s just common courtesy, Sarah".

She is also an incredible craftswoman. She's taught me everything I know about crafts. Without "Grandmother the knitter", there would never be "Sarah the knitter". So yeah, not a 'where' but a 'who'.

As for current favorite drama... Well, I am also loving Best/Greatest Love. I love their take on the entertainment/idol/variety industry, it's so refreshing to watch. But I feel like this is a show better if marathoned, so I'm trying to save up some episodes atm...or at least wait until I need a pick-me-up. I'm also liking New Tales of Gisaeng, and (surprisingly...to me at least) Baby Faced Beauty. At first I was completely turned off because of the initial "she's older than twelve, her life must be over"-thing. Morally I think the idea is off the charts unacceptable and frankly disgusting, and at almost 21 I've started to "feel my age" (yeah I know, whine whine. But suddenly you're all.grown.up. It's a terrifying concept. Though I am slowly realizing that nobody's really grown up, just some people decided to get really boring along the way. You can be responsible and silly at the same time.). But they've eased up on it a bit now, so it's easier to ignore. Besides, I learning to love the Murphy's law-ish slapstick humor and the goofy male lead, and that the main couple actually try to help each other out and are...nice to each other (I know. What a concept! lol. I love dramatic drama's as much as the next girl, but it's always nice with a change of paste).

I tried to watch Manny, but I'm not really a fan of the main character...s. Though I only really watched the first episode, and it generally takes me longer to get into a new drama, so I'm planning to give it another go in a drama-drought. I haven't started watching Can You Hear My Heart, but I know I'm going to have to with so many people gushing about how good it is. I don't know much about the others you mentioned, but I'll be sure to copy the names in my "rainy day drama folder" (I keep a handy list for whenever I'm feeling "brows-y").

Well, that's one massive post. Haha. Good weekend everyone!

Yay! New Tales of Gisaeng is not going makjang (..for now)! I'm so happy!

You know, ever since Saran started going on her bender of self destruction a few episodes ago, I've been waiting for this show to go completely makjang and ruin everything. Someone in the thread mentioning that the writers last show did, didn't help matters (though I did appreciate the warning). During the last two episodes, I expected everything to be IT, the big makjangstarting IT. So when Ah Da Mo punched Director Ma, I was seeing brain hemorrhage and jailtime. When he later was alive and out of the hospital I was half expecting him to fall over in every scene I saw him. The whole scene about his backpains, I was like "oooh, so he'll just go paralyzed and then then..." (lawsuits and paying damages...oh my!). So when nothing major happened when he went to meet Saran, and he said "I'll drive myself home" I was like "oooh, this is it. This is it.". And I was like a) He's gonna kill himself and then Saran is going to spend the remainder of the series feeling guilty, or b) he's going to try and kill himself by running Saran and Ah Da Mo over. Neither would make a very good show.

So now that the whole "suffering Gisaeng"-bit is (presumably *fingers crossed*) over, we can get down to the real business of the show. I can't wait for them to start letting Saran know who her birth mother is. And for them to start trying to convince Ah Da Mo's sunglasswearing Daddy. Oh and for Ra Ra to find out about her fiance... Oh, oh and Ja and Goong Jo to get together... and so much more. It's going to be great. JUST DON*T GO MAKJANG!

On a different note... Is it just me or is Saran really pushing the limits of the "it's your fault"-thing. Ok, so he broke your heart in a mean way, but how is every stupid decision you made after that his responsibility?

Oh, I want to talk about 33-34, though it'll be like half-rant and half-testimony.
See, I sort of strongly sided with Saran. Her and Damo's relationship was over, so he had no right to be dictating her life as a Gisaeng. I could 'get' why he was upset about it, but I absolutely hated his Hurricane Damo way of doing stuff, it is so intimidating. A little sensitivity would have done wonders, but it's ok, Saran was one tough nut who knew not only only how to stand up for herself but also dig her claws in. Meow. I actually loved the psychological warfare and that she one-upped him everytime.
33 was incredibly, incredibly intense and one of finest hours of television, but what on earth was 34? Was that fanservice? It all happened too quick and I kind of lost me where Saran is concerned.
Hwa-ran is suddenly some kind of saint to STILL be so patient with her, given how much time, blood, sweat and MONEY was involved in the Gisaeng Hair-Raising. Ugh. Hopefully this weekend's epsiodes will restore the balance somewhat, because 34 was wack. Not in a good way.
Oh and what have they done with Lee Hyo-jung's character? This is a kiddie-friendly family drama no more.

For the most part I was just happy not everything was going horribly wrong through ep 34, as they tend to do when things seem to be going ok and there are still a lot of episodes left to fill (but this show has plenty of plot without it, so I'm just glad they're staying away from unnecessary complications for now), so I enjoyed a little fan service for once - It's been a hard few weeks for our couple. You are right though, for someone who essentially married another man it's a little strange how easily things were resolved. At the same time I'm happy that we're (seemingly...) done with that whole thing. If I could choose I would like to remove the whole "hair rasing"-plot, I think it was an unnecessary complication, so I don't really mind if everyone just acts like it never happened.

But now, we can finally move to the next chapter of the show. I can't wait to see how they try to get approval from the might Sunglass guy, also known as Damo's dad. And if Saran's sister and Ja get together, I'm really rooting for them, they'd make a great couple.

I haven't ever really watched a longer show. I can't believe I am still so into this show, so many episodes in. So kudos to the writer.

Sorry, I'm just a little bit sexist sometimes. But I don't know, I can't bring myself to hate Damo, yet I can't STAND men like him who don't know when to give a girl a little personal space. Does it irk other girls as much as it irks me? I know it's just a drama but honestly....

I just felt with 34, he got his payoff after much suffering and weight loss and bust lips (and I'll be honest, he made me cry too) but did he really learn his lesson?
What was the point of all his suffering if he never really evolved and matured through it? I suppose there is solace in the fact that he and Saran noted his immaturity and he made promises to grow up. I really, truly hope he does.

I (heart) Sonja to absolute pieces. But then in 34 he kind of spent an entire episode idolising Damo! Nooooo.... You're better than him Sonja, you're much better than him. Don't become a Damo on me now. Remain Sonja through to the end.

Lol! Sonja is indeed the cutest thing ever. Though the story is about Dama and Saran I can't help getting a big gooey smile on my face every time him and Gong ju come on the screen (and this is a person who is usually against noona-donsaeng relationships....THAT'S how cute he is hehe!).

On another point, I think Damo has learnt his lesson. Going to the gisaeng house and having Saran still reject him was a severe wake up call for him. He did mature because he realised that he was no longer the 'Almighty Damo Who Must Be Obeyed'. He realised that in the relationship he was actually the one who was benefiting. That epiphany in its self was a level up on the maturity scale. I think what he and Saran were agreeing on was that he still has a long way to go and a lot of bad habits to drop.

Keeping that in mind....Saran isn't exactly 'mature' herself. As Sarah said, sure Damo hurt her...but her blaming him for every stupid decision is kinda getting old. It wasn't exactly his fault her stepmother is a conniving short legged money hungry hag (love the actress who plays her by the way, if she can get me dislike her this much she must me awesome).

Anyway...ending with happy thoughts! Sonja and Gong ju!!!!!

I am completely with you on the "guys who don't let the girl have time to think" (or breath). Like the hand-janking thing. I know, I know, I watch kdramas and I don't like arm grabbing...haha. I try to tolerate it, to put it that way.

I don't hate Damo either. Maybe part of it is that since he's trying to get her out of a bad situation we give him some leniency in the approach. I agree that it's not his place, and I would be flying through the roof if someone tried to do that to me, but the fact that he feels partially responsible and wants to fix it, even if it means loosing her helps. From what I remember, he even said something like "I don't care if you won't be with me, just don't marry the old perv" (...paraphrasing of course). And although he is a little too pushy, he seems to really respect Saran and her opinions, that helps as well. Another reason for why I don't hate him for it, it doesn't seem like he's using it as a tactic to control her, he just honestly doesn't know any better. Again, it doesn't excuse his behavior, just explains why we're not hating on him as much as we might have.

As for how much he's really changed... Well, I think Damo has changed in the sense that he now values love over obligations to his father. But whether he'll get bored of her again, that we'll just have to wait and see.

As for Ja ('Sonja' is a girls name where I live. Although it's pronounced a little differently, I just can't bring myself to call him that, lol), I think what he admired about Damo was how he took the bull by the horns and didn't give up. So far, I actually liked how he's using that influence. He's slowly starting to make his presence known with Saran's sister, so to speak... Ask her to go for dinner, hold her hand etc... But if she rejects him and he starts telling her stuff like "No, you don't understand. You really DO love me, you just don't realize it." then I'll be completely with you. But Ja seems like too much of a gentleman to pull something so stupid. I think in a way he just needed a push to work up his confidence to start approaching her.

Hello OT! Hope you all had a great week!
Does anyone else like watching "More charming by the day"? I starting watching a few weeks ago, and I am completely hooked. The characters are SO adorable, esp Choi Yeo Jin and Lee Kyu Han. Their chemistry is just so adorable!

Hello Everyone! Happy, Happy, Sunny Friday!!!

Finally a day with sunshine. Since the last OT it has rained every day until today!!! Yippee!!!!!

I noticed something durning the week. ABC Family has a New Series with the Same Premise as Shining/Twinkle Twinkle, but with a teenage/deaf slant.

I find it interesting that some of the kdramas I have watched are now seemingly appearing as American TV series. It’s a very old premise dating back to Merry Olde England’s Yester-year. But, why now? Who came up with the idea? Kdramaland has been churning/recycling this story out for years.

Is Hollywood taking notice of Seoul with regards to entertainment that actually is good and sells?

Ahjummabunny... did you watch La Fea Mas Bella on mexican tv? I loved it so much my son bought the DVD set after it ended.

Ugly Betty was good by american tv standards but it never matched the mexican novela drama. I've watched the "Betty La Fea" series from Spain, Germany, Netherlans, India, Mexican and of course the original Colombian.

Was there ever a Korean version? If so... I'm on it!! ^.^

I guess it would be pointless for me to watch since I would need subtitles :)

Oh yeah, my friend mentioned it and I saw the commercial and I was like, "Hey, that's just like Twinkle Twinkle!" I don't know if you could say Hollywood saw the drama and decided to do the same thing because that type of thing happens all the time in US soap operas.

Also, one the actors is listed as ki hong lee my brain immediately rearranged it to lee hongki who was in you're beautiful and GU-MIHO (9 tailed fox!!!!) I do think they're borrowing kdrama at disney.

I thought the same thing to myself when I saw the promos! I was going to mention it to my mom, who happened to be around when the commercial was airing, until I realized she'd have no clue what I was talking about. She finds my kdrama-love amusing and slightly disturbing, but only b/c she doesn't know that my obsession is non-existent compared to so many :s

Anywho, I'm looking forward to watching it. I forget who plays the red-head mom, but I like her as an actress. I'm hoping it does well. ABC Family shows can be so hit-or-miss.

Is Hollywood taking notice of Seoul with regards to entertainment that actually is good and sells?
Maybe they've taken note of Twinkle Twinkle's great rating.

Getting my masters diploma in a few hours! That's one journey over. Is it weird that I feel more affected by the ending of the journey that is 49 days? What an amazing drama. Say what you will abt the ending, but 49 days is easily one of the best dramas of 2011 and is one of my top faves of all time.

Best Love - hilarious! I have asthma and it just keeps on triggering it with the funny! And i love how Dokko Jin falls in love with Aejung first! This is a first in a hong sisters drama that the guy harbors a one-sided love for the main girl. But I feel really bad for the doctor!

Lie to Me - getting there. will approach each episode cautiously.

Romance Town - intriguing enough to continue watching, but not yet invested.

I love 49 Days.
Although the ending left a gaping hole in my heart, I still love it to bits. It's definitely not going in my "to re-watch" list, but it'll always hold a special place in my heart.
But I have to say, I really love the fact that the relationship between Ji Hyun and Yi Soo was true and pure friendship (as well as Kang-ah and Yi Kyung later on). It just goes to show that not all male and female leads in a drama have to be romantically linked for it to be satisfying. The part where Yi Soo sent Ji Hyun off to the elevator really touched me.

Nonetheless, I needed some 1N2D to cheer me up after that finale. (I finally gave in and started watching after reading jb and gf's witty recaps XD)

There were a few songs they used in the episodes that I really liked, but have NO idea what they are, so it'd be great if anyone could help me out there.

There was a song in Episode 329 that started playing around 1:16:00 when the boys on their way to the harbour in the bus. All I caught was "nae saram..." XD;;;

Also in Episode 332, there was one that started around 1:21:00, a little after the boys laugth and take a picture in front of a cherry blossom tree. It starts with "neoege..."
(Sorry that probably didn't help...)

And in the same episode, near the end (around 1:23:00) they played a ballad when the boys were doing the heart-on-my-head pose in a field of yellow flowers.

If anyone happens to know what songs they are, please let me know (what it's called, who it's by and preferrably, which album it's on if possible), 'cause I'd love to hunt them down. Thanks!!

I don't know if I should start watching Best Love. I'm already watching... three? four? dramas, and even though it's summer vacation, watching dramas all day isn't conducive to having a social life or unpacking or cleaning up around the house or seriously reviewing Korean (I like to pretend it is, but at the end of the day I'm relying on the subtitles, because I'm too lazy to try listening. But the words they use are so big! And two years of study just hasn't prepared me for the speed at which they speak! And... crap. I'm so screwed when I go to study in Korea in a few months...)

Hi everyone! Dropped in here to see how you all are. I'm exhausted from crying 49 buckets of tears over 49 Days. Heck, I haven't even watched ep 20 yet. I had to stop cos I was soooooo tired from all that bawling. My nose started to run like crazy then it stopped running and became stuffed. I couldn't breathe through my nostrils and had to gulp in air through my mouth. My eyes are red, my eyelids puffy. I feel like I've the flu. Haven't cried so much since Stairway to Heaven. WOW!!! I guess it's a good thing that I can't cry!!! My version of crying (no tears) gave me a headache for the rest of the night (10 yrs later still there). I would rather deal with head pain, I think.

I am so sympathetic to your situation, though!!!

I am on the fence about LTM. I was going to give it up but now its ALMOST reeling me back in, but so far the drama has not proven to be original in the least so i will stick with JB/GF's recaps for now.

Also who watched the 5 minute trailer for Ripley?
SO SO hyped up for it! i already know i will LOVE KHJ and Yoochun was really good too. LDH also seems to have gotten her acting mojo back judging from the "harassment" scene. The character stills look great.

I am considering taking up BFB (instead of LTM) or watching city hunter/Romance town. Is BFB good?

*49 days Fiasco*
(Final Thoughts)

I supposed at the end of the day my assumptions about this dramas where correct.
In a world where matters of life and death are view trough the eyeglass of religious and philosophical dogma, 49 days fail to provide if not a logical, or a coherent closing, or a proper resolution to the “Mambo Jumbo” that it created, in order to make a point that logically and realistically it is quite easy to convey or understand:

1- We do not control the life/death cycle.
2- We all are from the moment we are born, are set in a race to encounter our own death.
3- Violent deaths will always be hard to accept and understand.
4- Only few people are granted the “gift” of having their life extended after ones appointed time has come up, etc, etc.

The main charge that I had against 49 days, and the thing that I dislike the most all along was, the fact that this drama was, and is a very “Religious, and Philosophical” drama at the core of its premise.

I for one can debate religion and philosophy with the best around here, the problem that I have with both Religion and Philosophy, is that it alienates people, since their assumptions tend to be exclusive and not inclusive, while they try to give reason to cause, in an attempt, to demystify death and the after life, they only end up antagonizing the very people they claim are here to help.

So in this “Smörgåsbord” of half baked religious and philosophical diatribes that became 49 days, there is no wonder why people are all up in arms, since the writer neglected to lay its dogma in a more “mundane” format in which I believe, most viewers will be able to understand, no, she went out of her way to try to prove a point, or points in such a haphazard manner, that at the very end she completely fail to satisfied 80% of its audience.

So again a drama that could have been one of the best in the last 5 years, it “Totally Tank” at the end.
Like JB said we can try to force our minds to accept the writers conclusion, but at the gut level most of us were left wanting, and that my friends really sucks!!!!!!

Not all religions are a “different” path to the same knowledge or the same “GOD,” as a Jew, Christian, Muslim, I will have a completely different understanding of life, death, and the after life, the "Bardo Thodol", from where the writer borrows the tenants for her story line, will differ greatly from the three monotheistic religions, since it is more in step with eastern “shamanism,” and spiritualism, it works in a Sino/Korean/Japanese/ South East Asians cultures.

We all are born to live and then die, what we make of this life is up to us, so be good to one another, and try to live at peace with all, and hope to see you all in the after life!!!!! : O }

For me, I barely noticed the religious side of the story. The story tells me more about the importance of relationships and time, and the essence of living. It's more about the time one spends now than whatever happens in the afterlife.

To me, this is 49 Days' message in a nutshell: Regret, avoid it if you can.

`*Lee Eun-ju (RIP)*

February 22, 2011, mark the 6th anniversary of Lee Eun-ju's tragic suicide death, IMHO she was along with Son Ye-jin one of Koreas top actress’s of their generation .

I come to discovered K-Dramas late in my life, graduating from Korean movies to dramas, Son Ye-jin was the Korean Actress that open my eyes to the beautiful world of Korean movies and then dramas.

As a consequence I came across the talents of actress
Lee Eun-ju ( Phoenix, Lover's Concerto, Brotherhood
(Taegukgi), The Scarlet Letter).

As a drama actress her best work came in with the drama Phoenix. Phoenix was and still is IMHO one of the Best K-Drama Melodramas of the last 10 years.

Lee Eun-ju , plays Lee Ji Eun a “bratty” rich girl who always gets what she wants, with no regards to the consequences.
The male lead is Lee Seo Jin (Damo, Yi San) playing Jang Sae Hoon, a poor student working part time at a gas/petrol station.
Second male lead is Eric (Que Sera, Sera,Strongest Chil Woo), plays Suh Jung Min a Chebol who as we know is irresponsible, and ill manner.
The second female lead is Jung Hye Young (Mischievous Kiss, The Return of Iljimae), she plays Yoon Mi Ran, a rich girl who becomes the frenemy, and love rival.

*Phoenix, the drama*
Lee Ji Eun car start to break down on the road, and she happens to arrive at the gas station where Jang Sae Hoon's work, after he fixes her car, she try's to get “friendly” with Sae Hoon, only to be rejected, as he is a University student and she still barely out of High School.

Ji Eun, does not take the rejection kindly and she starts to stalk Sae Hoon, until he finally fall for her and stat dating, she learns how poor he really is an that starts to create friction in the relationship, since she wants Sae Hoon to received help not only from her but also from her rich father.

Ji Eun and Sae Hoon eventually meet their parents, but as we all know her father specially is against the relationship, since they see him as a poor man, not worthy of their daughters hand.

Ji Eun decided that the only way for them to remain together is to get pregnant an then her parents wont object. She goes trough with her plan and eventually she gets pregnant, and the finally get married, but still Sae Hoon refuses to get help from her family putting a lot of strain in there newly weed relationship, the problem with Sae Hoon is that he is to proud to ask for help, in this case received help from her in-laws because he sees himself less than a real man if he accepts help.

Ji Eun eventually, starts to learn how to cook but with him being a full time student and only working part time, they do not have enough money for both of them to eat properly, to the detriment of her health and the baby, eventually all the stress in the relationship triggers a “miscarriage,” of the pregnancy, both of them feeling guilty, she blames herself for not resting and eating properly, and him for refuse help from her parents, and they separate and eventually get a divorce and go their own way.

Sae Hoon decides to go to America, to study as he was granted a scholarship, when Ji Eun find out that he was leaving she drove to the airport to stop him, her father follow after her and while at a stop sign, her father got out trying to stop her from going tho chase after Sae Hoon, as her father was standing in the middle of the road, a motorcyclist hits him in an apparent freak accident, and she was not able to stop Sea Hoon from living for America.

With her fathers death, his business partner took over the company, and left Ji Eun with no economic means, thus loosing all the riches and comfort of her prior life.

10 years after the incident Sae Hoons returns \from America, he is a savvy business man and is now a Computer/Electronic Engineer, he starts his own company designing MP3 players but Ji Eun's fathers partner is now the CEO of one of Korea’s to electronic manufacturing company's, so they feel threaten by this new start-up company, so the maneuver with their lending banks to do a hostile take-over and buy the small electronic company, they sell out and Sae Hoon goes to work for them as their new product designer.

Sae Hoon and Suh Jung Min (chebol), do not get along from the get go and we find that, that animosity is going to bring problems in the near future, Jung Min is the heir company that was taking away from Ji Eun's after her fathers death.

Ji Eun by this time she a no longer a bratty little rich girl, on the other hand she has become the sole provider for herself and her mother, who has been suffering from severe depression since the death of her husband.
Ji Eun works as a “Maid,” and she is basically the top dog for her company, her skills and professionalism has garner the admiration and support from her company and is now given the assignment to take care of the richest clients that company has.

Sae Hoon is given a new mansion provided by his new employer, he is told that in a couple of days the new maid will be coming to clean his house and cook for him, at the end of the entrance there is a wall where he hangs a painting a picture of a “Phoenix.” this painting is very important to the theme and over all story line, the first time that Sae Hoon takes Ji Eun in a proper date he makes the date to a sort of museum /gallery where the painting is hanging and she ask what he likes about that painting and he explains to her the meaning of the Phoenix story.

Ji Eun arrives to work and the first thing that she notice is the painting, and all her memories come flooding back in her mind, but she dismisses them as just coincidence, but after Sae Hoon arrives home from work the fated couple meet at last one more time.

She try's to keep everything at a respectful and professional manner, but the past takes the best of him, and he belittles her on their reversal of fate, know hes on top while she is no longer the rich girl but has drop to the level of being nothing more than his servant, Ji Eun does not take his insults laying down on the other hand she tell him that she is very proud of what she has become, she may not be the spoiled brat that he married back when she was 19 years old, but now she is the best worker at her company and that is nothing to be shame full about, even if she is just a mere servant as he put it.

A few days latter Sae Hoon tell Ji Eun to prepare a welcome dinner for his fiance who is coming back from America back to Korea, as the day arrives we notice that his fiance Yoon Mi Ran is in a wheel chair, and she happened to be Ji Eun's friend from High school, she have left for America to attend college so she never had the chance to meet Sae Hoon while he was married to Ji Eun, and as she arrives at the dinner the love triangle meets for the first time.

Eventually things start to get complicated, Suh Jung Min befriends Ji Eun and he falls for her from day one, but she refuses him, so the love square is in full swing, Ji Eun and Sae Hoon having to pretend that they know each other, becomes more complected as time goes by since Jung Min helps her to get a job at his company bringing Ji Eun and Sea Hoon in to contact almost on a daily base, and we see how Sea Hoon and Jung Min start to compete overs Ji Eun attention.

We find out that the only reason why Sae Hoon is marrying Mi Ran is because he was driving the car when the accident that took away her ability to walk, Sae Hoon is not in love with Mi Ran he feel responsible for her situation so he promised that he was going to take care of her for the rest of their life's. Mi Ran eventually discovered that Sae Hoon and Ji Eun where married at one point so she starts to figure out how to keep them apart.

Ji Eun decides to start dating Jung Min, and some how in the curse of Ji Eun meting some people connected to her father in the past she start to suspect that her fathers death was not really an accident but was foul play, meaning that it implicates Jung Min's father as the culprit.

Sae Hoon and Ji Eun decide to put their pain aside in order to find the truth about her fathers death, and eventually Ji Eun confronts Jung Min about his father involvement but he denies any wrong doing, Ji Eun tell him that if she finds other wise she will never forgive him.
The closer they get to the truth, Mi Ran and Sae Hoon relationship started to sour, and when confronted Sae Hoon admits that he will marry her out of feeling indebted to her for the accident not out of love, since Ji Eun is and will always be his first love, unable to deal with this new reality Mi Ran decides that the best way to revenge herself against Ji Eun and Sae Hoon is by the way of suicide, and she does kill herself.

Eventually Jung Min discovers the truth, that his fathers order the murder of Ji Eun's father, he said the they were not trying to kill him but they try to injured him only so while he was in the hospital they could manage to take over the company but unfortunately the guy in the motorcycle mess up killing the man instead.

Jung Min decides to hide the truth from Ji Eun and pretends that all is well, one of Sae Hoon's inventions an MP3 with recording capabilities records the confession to the murder and Jung Min's father eventually dies of a heart attack,
Jin Eun finds the Jung Min lie to her and she breaks the relationship, and eventually she recover part of the company.

At the end we find Ji Eun and Sae Hoon over looking the little house where they first consummate their love, and they decide that maybe is time to put all the past behind and start again as if it was the first time they meet, and maybe love will flourish the second time around. FIN!!!!!

I can honestly say that from all the K-dramas that I have ever seen this is one the lasted with me the longest, not only because I believe is one of the best, but because while doing some research in the life of Lee Eun-ju I found out the it had been 3 1/2 years since she had die. I spend about a week in mourning and I try to watch “The Scarlet Letter” but I have not being able to finish watching that movie, out of respect and and admiration for her work I have presented a small recap of what I consider the finest work of a Korean actress, that if it was not for her tragic death I reckon she will be if not the #1 Korean actress she will be among the best!!!!

May her work and memory live for generations to come!

Lee Eun-Ju (November 16, 1980 – February 22, 2005)

Happy OT everyone.I am off to bed.Just finished ep 4 of Romance Town. It's pretty good and it's (I feel horrified saying this) going along much better than LTM.I am still watching it but only watching it.Romance Town however is turning out quite well and not as fluffy rom com as you think. There are some real slices or real life maid stories I have observed.

Greatest Love ep 6 though. My heart was kind of stricken by Dokgo Jin's devastated looking face.I love CSW but for this drama I am shipping Pil Joo all the way.He is such a caring Dr.I want a son like him too :-)

Oh yes for those who are interested softsubs for GL ep 6 should be out in 12 hours provided the maker doesn't sleep in on Sat morning :-)

Picking Gong Hyo-jin was really a genius move on their part.

I used to love Hong Gil Dong but recently tried to rewatch it and really felt Kang Ji Hwan was the only thing the show had going for it. The tone was really uneven and Jang Geun-seok was at his worst and really wooden in it. I think if it had been just a straight comedy and a few eps shorter it would have been alot better. But I guess you can't really tell the story of HGD without some serious scenes...

I second that!!! L.O.V.E. City Hall! It's my go to drama on rainy days! It made a CSW fan out of me. His eyes got me every time. Through his eyes, I sincerely can feel the happiness, the sadness, the frustration, and especially the love for Mi Rae. The way he looks at her while dancing before the proposal ... I would do anything to have someone looks at me like that.

I'm holding off on BL and having a hard time doing it lol.

I think I sort of understand.

I LOVED CSW and KSA in City Hall. I loved their chemistry, I loved their characters, and I loved the entire storyline. It's tough to go from loving CSW in that drama and then trying to watch him with a new female lead in another drama. I was going to hold off on Best Love as well, but trust me, he's great in this one too! You'll love it darienme!

I know right? And the way he frequently watches her from afar... I know what you mean about his eyes... It's like you can see the love in them... If I were KSA or any other female he's ever gazed on like that I would either go speechless or turn into a puddle of goo.

I'm waiting for the BL recap. Keep refreshing but so far the most recent post is still "Lee Min-ho Nekkid". Hey, better that post than any other one. =P
