City Hunter: Episode 12

Somehow the phrase “I wanna be like City Hunter” doesn’t quite have the ring of “I wanna be like Mike,” even though, DUDE, I totally want to be like City Hunter, by which I mean AWESOME. And exciting, and intriguing, and sexy. Damn sexy. Though that’s mostly Lee Min-ho’s doing.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Nana tells Yoon-sung that she’s glad he wasn’t the one to get shot, and her body goes limp. Yoon-sung cradles her to himself, crying.

If anything were able to inject the tiniest smidge of humor into the moment, it’s the sight of Shik-joong, bursting into the room after finding a crate to wield as a weapon, surprised to find the enemies all neutralized. Thus they’re able to escape, so when Kim Jong-shik gets the word that his captives have fled, his upset quickly turns to fear: “It can’t be…the City Hunter?”

Sae-hee answers the clinic door and quickly takes in the sight of Yoon-sung grimly carrying in a bloody Nana. Without batting an eye, she immediately locks the door and tells ajusshi to close the blinds. Gotta love a woman who’s fast on the uptake.

Lying on the table, Nana opens her eyes, and OH THANK GOD. (It’s mixed with the tiniest bit of disappointment, narratively speaking, which I’ll talk more about below. But yes, mostly relief. My blood pressure can return to normal now. I mean, I was pretty sure they weren’t going to kill her. But…what if?)

Sae-hee sees the wound and says with censure, “Guns, again?!” Even as she starts to clean the wound, she tells Yoon-sung urgently to take her to the hospital, because Nana’s lost a lot of blood and they have none here. I half-expect Yoon-sung to go flying out the door to steal blood packets from a hospital, but his response is even better: “Take my blood.” He’s Type O, the universal donor, and with tears in his eyes he overrides Sae-hee’s concerns. He insists, “I’m fine — just save Nana.”

They lie there, facing each other, while his blood supplements hers. Oh man, taken as an isolated gesture this is poignant, but it’s made all the better by the fact that we’ve established that Yoon-sung’s blood is his kryptonite — at least to his secret cover. Of all things, it’s the one that puts him in the most danger. And the two people to whom he’s offered it, despite his revenge and his scary scary father, are his mother and Nana. GOD I LOVE THIS DRAMA.

Just before Sae-hee administers a sedative so she can operate for the bullet, Nana tells Yoon-sung not to worry about her, because she’s plucky like that. Honey, after this you won’t ever have to prove that again, ever. Her hand extends from her side, and Yoon-sung takes it, holding on as she goes under.

He keeps holding it while Nana sleeps after the procedure. He wonders to Shik-joong, “What kind of person is she? Why is she so fearless? She looks just like a normal woman, but she doesn’t stand back, and doesn’t spare her health.”

Shik-joong mumbles sleepily, “It’s ’cause she’s strong. That’s how she’s lived like this all this time.”

Yoon-sung asks, “Will she live well…without me?” (I don’t know what you’re thinking, but stop it! Right! Now!) What’s lovely about this conversation is that Shik-joong is half-asleep, so he doesn’t read into Yoon-sung’s words and just murmurs unthinkingly, “The living just keep living. That’s what living is.”

Yoon-sung: “I don’t think I can do that anymore.” Do what? DO WHAT?! You mean live without Nana, right? You mean forgo your happiness for the sake of revenge, right??

Yoon-sung takes Nana home with him, since she won’t be safe at her place. He tells her not to go to the Blue House, either, since Kim Jong-shik will know where she works, and Shik-joong calls in sick for her (citing an injured arm).

Nana asks Shik-joong why he lied all those years ago, and he tells her regretfully that he caved to Kim Jong-shik’s threat to imprison him on false charges. Asked how he knows Yoon-sung, he explains about Yoon-sung saving his life in Thailand. He adds that he’d asked Yoon-sung to look after Nana when he got to Korea, because he’d felt guilty all these years.

Yoon-sung confirms that the money hasn’t moved, since the tracker he snuck into the stash is still at Kim Jong-shik’s mansion. By his calculations, there was a staggering 200 billion won in that room, which translates to roughly $185 million. It also accounts for the missing university funds that they’d been unable to trace.

Shik-joong settles back for some light reading (a home shopping catalog!) and flicks the light switch, which doesn’t work. He gets up to replace the bulb…and spots the bug planted there by Bad Daddy’s minion Sang-gook.

(You know what’s a fantastic detail that really makes this moment for me? The fact that the bug was planted while Shik-joong was distracted with his home shopping fixation — and now it’s discovered because of it. Awesome way to weave a minor point into the larger fabric of the show. It’s what gives the drama texture.)

They realize where the bug must have come from, although Jin-pyo’s already gleaned a lot of information from it, such as the fact that Nana took a bullet for Yoon-sung (ahhhh, that will never stop being satisfying to say), which suggests that they’re in “no ordinary relationship.”

Yoon-sung arrives outside Dad’s lair all ready to burst in with righteous indignation, but thankfully he catches Dad and Sang-gook’s conversation in progress, which gives him pause.

Jin-pyo says that his warning not to fall in love has gone by the wayside, so now “I’ll have to take care of Kim Nana. I’ll get rid of her.” He then asks for an update on Kyung-hee’s whereabouts, and Sang-gook reports that he’d searched hospitals far and wide, but turned up nothing. Jin-pyo orders him to find her, “Before Yoon-sung finds out she’s disappeared.”

Okay, so yes, it’s a little convenient that Yoon-sung happens to eavesdrop on this crucial bit of information. I’ll admit it. Yet the content of this eavesdropping is so awesome that I’m thrilled — this drama doesn’t drag secrets out far past their expiration date, but instead exposes them and twists them into something even more interesting. On a regular basis. This explains the crack-like addiction.

Furthermore, I appreciate that Sang-gook is starting to show glimmers of hesitation, as though even he’s uneasy with the extent of Jin-pyo’s badassery. He asks hesitantly, “But telling her that Yoon-sung died — isn’t that going too far?”

Jin-pyo shuts him up, saying, “When I stole Yoon-sung away from her, I’d already crossed a river I couldn’t turn back on.”

Stunned, Yoon-sung walks inside to face his father, and asks why he lied that Mom abandoned him. Jin-pyo answers that Yoon-sung represents his father to him, and that if he hadn’t stolen him away, Jin-pyo would probably be living a normal life right now. But every time he felt the desire for revenge ebbing, he’d look at Yoon-sung and be reminded of the betrayal.

Jin-pyo’s selfish logic is completely warped, yet makes sense in his own solipsistic, mad-for-revenge way. In his mind, the revenge has become so paramount that everything else pales in comparison.

Yoon-sung isn’t buying his explanation, saying that Jin-pyo’s mission has ruined his life. “I didn’t want to live like this! I will never, ever forgive you for this.”

Jin-pyo reminds him that they have work to do, but Yoon-sung tells him, “I will carry out my father’s revenge alone. You called this a war. I won’t run from it.”

Jin-pyo: “Yoon-sung, you can’t beat me.” Yoon-sung: “No. You can’t beat me.” Ooooh. Them’s fightin’ words.

Yoon-sung warns Dad that if he touches Shik-joong, his mother, or Nana, he’ll stake his life to fight back: “This is my last warning to you, Father.” Jin-pyo actually chuckles as Yoon-sung stalks off: “But you still call me Father.” Well, sure, if we’re going to argue semantics

Yoon-sung arrives home as Nana is about to leave, and she tells him, their backs turned to each other, that she’ll stay with Sae-hee. She’ll return his borrowed shirt via mail, and she’ll disappear from his life, per his request and her promise.

But everything’s changed now for him, and how refreshing is it that he no longer has to keep Nana away to protect her. In fact, the reverse is true. Yoon-sung grabs her wrist and asks, “Don’t go. Please. Don’t go.”

Nana shakes off his hand and walks away anyway. He follows, and gently holds her to him.

Drinking alone, Jin-pyo relives his last moments with Mu-yeol in the ocean massacre, and promises his friend to see the revenge through: “Whatever gets in the way of that revenge, I’ll kill. Even if that’s Yoon-sung.”

I love the way he says this with sadness, not wild-eyed ferocity, because he’s not actually insane, or irrational. Maybe he’s just grieving, in his twisted way that doesn’t allow him to see that he would be willing to kill Mu-yeol’s son out of love for Mu-yeol, which is the very definition of defeating the purpose.

Kim Jong-shik worries that the City Hunter saw his mountain of cash and orders his man to recapture Nana and Bae Man-deok (Shik-joong), to lure the City Hunter. Too bad one of them is off the grid, and one is a Secret Service agent, which complicates matters.

Yoon-sung tends to Nana’s shoulder, and she asks about his life back in Thailand, wondering if he had friends there. I love that their old camaraderie is back, now that they’ve smashed the whole I’m-being-a-dick-to-protect-you facade. He cheerily describes someone there who was like Nana — who was also strong, ate well, “and enjoyed whenever I touched [her].” Nana blusters that she’s not all about the skinship — well, maybe except now, but that’s only because of the injury, uh huh.

Yoon-sung warns Nana to keep out of his business, but she asks to be included in his mission against Kim Jong-shik, “Because he’s my enemy, too.” He’s prepared to argue, but she shuts him up with the simple, “I won’t leave you to do dangerous things alone anymore.” Gotta love a girl who’s as intent on protecting her man as he is about protecting her.

She backs off a bit by offering to find Kyung-hee while he works on Kim Jong-shik. It’s great how quickly she takes to this line of work, instructing him to hack into the hospital networks so she can start looking. She finally wears him down by pointedly picking up the tonic bottle Kyung-hee had given him, saying she misses her too.

Giving in, Yoon-sung pulls up a chair for her and shows Nana the list he’s compiled. The image below totally makes me happy, with Nana proud to join in as part of his mission.

At the Blue House, Eun-ah smells something fishy about the timing of Yoon-sung’s resignation and Nana’s injury, wondering if they’re playing hooky together. Eun-ah has always sensed something in the way he looked over during Da-hae sessions. Unless…he’s interested in HER! Ha. So close, and yet so far.

The IT chief asks Ki-joon and Eun-ah to help convince Yoon-sung to return to work, so the trio heads to Yoon-sung’s personal castle with mouths agape at the grandeur. (Nana scrambles to hide, lest she blow their cover.)

Evidence of Yoon-sung’s riches means the boss can’t exactly appeal to his need for a salary, so he asks Yoon-sung to come back as patriotic service. But Yoon-sung is firm about not changing his mind.

Hilariously, Shik-joong is smitten with Eun-ah at first sight, which is all the funnier since she’s thinking Yoon-sung’s into her. She offers to replace Nana in judo practice and go easy on him (getting Ki-joon’s hackles up), then flounces off to give herself a tour of his place. Yoon-sung jumps up to stop her, since Nana’s hiding upstairs, and dives to cover her from view. And then gives Nana a cheeky wink, gah.

Shik-joong sends off the trio with some homemade food, giving the men a small box and Eun-ah a huge one. (I do wonder if there’ll be any complication with the fact that Shik-joong called in for Nana as her uncle, and is introduced here as Yoon-sung’s uncle… Or maybe “uncle” is just his default cover.)

Jin-pyo knows Yoon-sung has bugged the money, and readies to steal it once it’s on the move so he can send it to to the prosecutor — but it’s not surprising that his primary motivation isn’t a sense of justice. Instead, he does it because he’s anticipating the entertainment factor of watching the fallout — will idealistic Young-ju prosecute his father, or protect him? “This should be fun,” he says.

Nana listens as Yoon-sung and Shik-joong discuss the likelihood of the money being transported within the next day. She’s still fuzzy on the details of this whole City Hunter operation, and asks whether Dad knows his secret identity. And why Jin-pyo doesn’t live with Mom Kyung-hee.

That’s a whole kettle of fish they aren’t inclined to get into right now, so Shik-joong merely says that Jin-pyo and Yoon-sung are having a “difference of opinion.” Nana’s sharp enough to suppose that such a “difference” equates to Dad offing Lee Kyung-wan.

Students stage another sit-in regarding the forfeited tuition promise, and Kim Jong-shik walks in to address them in his (falsely) earnest way. He says that he feels their pain, and is doing what he can to find more funding support, asking them to end the demonstration. But the leader, while thankful for the offer, says that they must see that the promise is honored.

Kim Jong-shik accepts that decision graciously and wishes them well, bowing deeply. But as he walks out, he sneers that they dare quibble over that measly money, in light of the school’s reputation as the top university in the country? If those students drop out, there are students for miles who’d be happy to enroll, AND pay full tuition.

In his paranoia (well, maybe it’s not paranoia if his fears are founded), Kim Jong-shik calls techs in for daily sweeps of his office, searching for wiretaps and hidden cameras. Kim is so nervous that he orders all phone and internet access cut off in his office.

Yoon-sung scopes out the situation from the lobby (“reading” a book titled Romance Novel, haha), deducing that Kim is readying to move his stash.

Kim is also fighting a toothache, and heads to the dentist for an appointment. One step ahead of him, Yoon-sung precedes him to the dentist’s office and delivers supplies, which then get implanted in Kim’s tooth. Hee!

Kyung-hee turns up in a monastery some distance away, but she decides to head back to Seoul to take care of something. She’s managed to remain hidden, and the prosecutors are likewise unable to locate her. Young-ju tries to look up Mu-yeol’s records, but finds that they don’t exist and wonders if they’d been purged.

Nana asks Yoon-sung to pick up her clothes from Sae-hee’s clinic, where she left her luggage. Once there, he sees Sae-hee being questioned by a minion and remains out of sight as she lies, saying she doesn’t know anything about Nana.

Shopping time! Yoon-sung starts out by asking the saleswoman for some “comfortable clothes to wear around the house,” but a dress catches his eye, and another, and another, until he’s cleaned out the racks. But he can’t give a sincere compliment to save his dorky hide, so he tells Nana that he bought things to hide her lack of a figure, ha.

But Nana’s on to him now, and smiles that he’s like her Daddy Long Legs. Which reminds her of her actual Daddy Long Legs, and she reveals that it’s Young-ju. She asks if they can go to him for help, still unaware of the Daddy-Son relationship, and Yoon-sung barks at her to remember that the prosecutor is on his tail. (He calls her Gom Nana, a play on her name which means “Bear Nana” and refers to her denseness. But I think I’ll call her Nana Bear instead, ’cause that’s just ridiculous and adorable.)

Shik-joong offers Nana some nifty (home-shopped?) shampoo, but she says she can’t shower because of her shoulder. He offers to wash her hair for her, and Yoon-sung immediately overreacts, jumping up in protest. Shik-joong: “Then you do it!” Yoon-sung: “I will!” Cute cute cute.

He washes her hair for her, taking his time and being gentle, which has got to be one of the sweetest romantic gestures ever. Nana playfully flicks suds at him (prompting another “Nana Bear” exclamation) and they engage in a play-fight.

Then it’s time to listen in on the bug implanted in Kim Jong-shik’s tooth, as he takes a meeting with a prospective donor. Who is…Kyung-hee?

Eek! She’s here to hand over the funds Jin-pyo had sent her over the years, now that she believes she has no son left living and is not long for this world. She tells Kim to use it to help the troubled students to continue their eduction. The amount: 1 billion won, which is just under $1 million.

As soon as he realizes it’s his mother, Yoon-sung runs out.

Kim Jong-shik smirks at this easy get, because Kyung-hee’s request to remain anonymous works out perfectly for his desire to pocket the funds. He can leave it unreported and just enjoy the spoils. You bastard!

Yoon-sung arrives at the school and passes by his mother, who’s hidden in a group of students. Noooooo! Turn around! He does, but a split second too late, and returns home in dejected spirits. His team reads his disappointment clearly, and Shik-joong confides to Nana that Yoon-sung had snapped when his surrogate mother died in Thailand. Nana asks for an explanation, but he tells her to hear it from Yoon-sung directly.

Kim Jong-shik wastes no time spending his money, taking his wife shopping for expensive bags and clothes. Posing as a shopper, Yoon-sung follows him along and overhears him confirming his plans to move the money tomorrow.

Young-ju goes over the university account records, finding discrepancies between the actual numbers and the recorded ones. There’s 200 billion that’s unaccounted for, and that suggests the possibility of a slush fund.

With that suspicion bouncing around in his head, Young-ju drops by to see his father — and finds him busily boxing up his money. My, isn’t that a satisfying “Oh shit” look on Kim’s face when his son calls out to him, looking stunned and disillusioned. Also furious.

Upset but also pleading, Young-ju says he doesn’t want his father to turn out like Lee Kyung-wan or Seo Yong-hak, and tells him that it’s still not too late. He gives him two options: “Return this money to the school, or turn yourself in.”

Dad says no, actually using “Everyone else does it” as his defense. What’s so wrong about him doing it too? If your friends all jumped off a bridge…

Young-ju replies with all earnestness, “Because it’s the law. Because it should be upheld. Because there are people who are hurt by your greed. I beg of you, please return to the father I respected. Please.”

Dad sighs that he’s come too far to turn back, but adds that his son is a prosecutor, and “You have to do what you have to do.”

Aw, I love this. It’s heartbreaking, and it’s another intra-family declaration of war, even as both parties acknowledge that they love each other. But not enough to back down — one believes in the value of justice, and the other can’t give up his selfish greed. Dad had wanted to preserve both his power and his son’s respect, but when push comes to shove, he chooses power.

Young-ju stalks out. Yoon-sung listens on the other end — having sent Nana away purposely to avoid this discovery — and muses, “Prosecutor Kim Young-ju, your dilemma has begun.” That’s a mild way to put it.

And then, D-Day.

Team City Hunter follows the tracker to the prepping grounds for the money move, which has been loaded onto a freight truck. Yoon-sung declares that they’ll have to return the money to the honest people who sweat blood and tears to earn it, and warns his team that Jin-pyo will be on their tail the moment they take the money: “No matter what, we have to protect it.”

The plan swings into motion, and it’s so genius-simple that I love it. Yoon-sung strolls over to the van and tosses some kind of teargas bomb inside, and when the window rolls down, he elbows the driver in the face. Then Shik-joong strolls over to the freighter and knocks on its window. When the driver rolls down the window, he tosses another bomb inside.

The driver jumps out quickly, and Nana steps in, flipping the guy to the ground — she’s only got one good arm, but the arm sure is good. It makes the guys gape in wonder, cutely.

Yoon-sung commandeers the truck, with Shik-joong and Nana in the car behind him. He’s soon joined on the road by Jin-pyo and Sang-gook, who pull up alongside them, and Yoon-sung begins Phase 2.

That means Shik-joong and Nana drive between the truck and Jin-pyo’s car, running interference and allowing Yoon-sung to speed up and drive on. Dad’s car tries to overtake the lead, but Shik-joong swerves back and forth to remain in front, and both cars get stuck at an intersection when the light turns red.

Dad catches up soon, overtakes the truck, and stops in the middle of the road — a direct echo of Yoon-sung’s own move in Episode 4. Eee, I love the parallel! But Yoon-sung isn’t his father, and may not have the balls (steel though they may be) to actually run him over.

And sure enough, he screeches to a halt just a few feet shy of collision.

Yoon-sung gets out and faces Dad, who tells him he’ll be taking the money, thanks. Yoon-sung intends to return the money to their sources, and then continue his Kim Jong-shik revenge.

Jin-pyo: “And then you’ll fight me?” Yoon-sung: “I warned you, didn’t I?”

Dad whips out his cane and whacks Yoon-sung with it, bringing him to his knees. Yoon-sung won’t hit him, so Dad challenges him to fight back, saying, “War means needing to win no matter who your opponent is.”

Jin-pyo gets into the truck and drives off, leaving Yoon-sung stranded in the road alone. He’s down, but not out — because when Dad pulls over a short distance later, he finds the truck empty. Muahaha!

Even Jin-pyo has to laugh, impressed even as he scowls, “Yoon-sung dares to fool me?”

Kim Jong-shik is much less amused (as in, not at all) and flips his lid when he hears the money has been stolen. Panic, rage, shock.

Shik-joong swaps out the license plates on his truck, applauding Yoon-sung’s forethought in procuring the exact same truck to act as decoy. With that, Team City Hunter gets down to business, boxing up money to mail back to the appropriate students. The accompanying note states that the City Hunter is returning funds hoarded by the university chairman for his personal use, in order to honor the tuition promise.

An interesting aside: One of the demonstrators is the bitchy girl from the previous episode, whom Yoon-sung had chided for her bad attitude. She’s the only one of the demonstrators who hasn’t received a package from the City Hunter, and wonders why.

Feeling celebratory, Shik-joong sends Yoon-sung and Nana to the supermarket for party ingredients. Shopping for groceries is such a delightfully mundane, domestic activity that it never ceases to put a smile on my face, especially when the sample lady refers to Yoon-sung as Nana’s husband and he smiles adorably in response.

As they’re heading to the parking lot, however, a cart knocks into theirs, and Nana darts forward to retrieve fallen tomatoes. Which is when the automatic sliding doors slam shut, separating the two, and the lights cut out. OH NO.

A motorcyclist speeds into the darkened garage, heading directly for them. Jin-pyo.

COMMENTS

I didn’t really think Nana would die, but there was enough uncertainty to make me mighty uneasy for a good half-day. I doubted this drama would go that dark, but thematically speaking, it would have worked wonderfully with the direction the story is taking. Thus far, Yoon-sung is the voice of justice (and reason), while Jin-pyo is driven by bloodlust. Killing Nana would have spurred Yoon-sung to revengey thoughts, and driven him close to — or over — the edge, much as he’d lost it when his surrogate mother was killed in Thailand. That means this not only becomes a son-vs-father battle, and a City-Hunter-vs-baddies-vs-The-Law battle — but a Yoon-sung-vs-himself battle, in which he fights to claim himself from the dark side. How great would that be?

Plus! Could you imagine the additional angst of Young-ju finding out that his father not only killed Nana’s mother, but also Nana? I would have been massively impressed had they gone that route, definitely.

On the other hand, I want SO BADLY for Yoon-sung to be happy, and I can’t see him ever being light and free without Nana by his side. So I’m not terribly disappointed, even though I still think it would’ve been an awesome way to go. Even if it would have broken my heart.

You know, I don’t want City Hunter to be extended, per se — I’ll take one if they give it to us, but that’s not what I mean when I say I want more, more, MOAR. I want them to wrap up this season as planned, then take some time to plot out a Season 2 with a new arc and a new set of character development issues, and see that complete story through as badassedly as they did this one.

Which, I think, is entirely feasible, possible, and desirable given that this season — imma call it Season 1 because I blindly refuse to give up the idea of a Season 2 — is really an origin story. It isn’t really until this episode that we have the assembly of our City Hunter Scooby gang, and with it now in place, I can totally see this structure playing out over multiple seasons, like Buffy or Angel.

Extending it into more seasons would also bring us closer to the original story, though I’ve long since stopped worrying about the manga ties as a requisite for enjoying this one. Consider that this season establishes Yoon-sung’s playboy alter ego, as well as setting him up for the Girl Friday relationship he has with his sidekick, and introduces the XYZ code as a call for help. The Blue House stuff was an invention of the K-drama, and it’s what gets our hero here at the beginning of his journey — but from this point on, we could even drop it and not lose anything. In future stories, all we’d need is a new Big Bad for the season, broken down into smaller Bads per this season’s five targets, to keep up the steady buildup-and-payoff rhythm we’ve established.

‘Cause really, this is a sustainable premise. I’m loving this team, and the characters, and the possibilities that this world has created. It would kill me a little to know they won’t get to realize the full gamut of stories built into the world.

Ahhhhh Season 2, where are you??

I think this is definitely one of the best episodes so far. (though I kept saying the same thing every time a new episode comes out).

I WANT TO KILL JINPYO SO MUCH RIGHT NOW. LIKE SRSLY.

Minho's wink is priceless.

The blood-transfusing scene was priceless, too. To me, this is definitely the first scene that solidifies LMH and PMY's strong chemistry. I just can't help it when both leads stare deep into each other's eyes, like trying to find out what the other is thinking of. (which is pulled off so effortlessly well, in many many times by hyunbin-hajiwon in secret garden)

Minho's wink is priceless. Like srsly. I've scene that scene over 10 times already.

And I want to kill Cruella-Daddy-Deville so much.

LOL. I think they would let him do that by himself. Also, he seems very shy from all the interviews I've seen. I don't think he would let you.

Loved this episode! I had been crossing my fingers that NaNa would team up with Yoon Sung and it finally happened!!!!! To cool!

I also love how this drama pays attention to details and weaves in minor plot points from previous episodes--I really liked how the bitchy university girl from the earlier episode didn't get any money. The writers could have just used her as a funny little moment in whatever episode she was in before and forgotten about it, but I just love the fact that they brought her up again in this episode to show that City Hunter only gives to those who deserves. Ahhh, karma :)

I know... it's difficult for me to figure out how to spell out hangul.

If there is a proper english translation/romanization of hangul phonetics... I hope to learn it someday.

Thanks... your spelling is sounds out the hangul much better than mine. :)

I want more to happen with Sang gook. Right now he's just Jinpyo's henchman and sometimes conscience. I don't think Sang gook is as bad as Jinpyo or say committed to carrying out revenge in the same horrid way as Jinpyo wants to.

I think Sang gook might turn on Jinpyo later if he gets more touched by the turmoil Yoon sung is going through because of what Jinpyo did - kidnapping and lying to Yoon sung. Sang gook might be part of the plan in beating Jinpyo!

What I can see from ep1 till now, they are curving up the story little by little closing to the original manga, which is awesome imo, I knew Nana wouldn't die cuz in the manga she played an important part both in CH's journey and the success of the manga. What I really looking forward to is whether or not by the end of this drama, they will shape up CH to become like the real CH in the manga, yunno, perv with his girl buddy chasing him down for that, LMH's wink in this episode (if any indication at all) made me think they are going in that direction. If by the end, CH is the real CH that most of us known for many years, I would call this one 'the birth of City Hunter', and also awesome J-manga adaptation by the Korean to date.

It's also amazing that I didn't hear complain from the manga fans till now (and believe me there are millions),
which is to say somehow they silently accept LMH's CH and closely watch him with hawk eyes.

oh thank you @tiara for the link..you're a diamond :)

I've read what he said there and he's right the way CH began was not really faithful to the manga however as the SHOW goes on, there is that window for a plot twist close to the manga...But what I like more is when he said "CITY HUNTER THE BEGINNINGS"....

Is he teasing us? *grin*

WOW! It sure sounded like there are plans for carrying on with a season 2.

If they did that, I could die happy!

Sorry - the way I interpret what LMH had to say about CH is that "The Beginning" should be viewed as the "Prequel" or lead-in to the manga and not as a hidden teaser for season 2 - but there's nothing wrong with wishful thinking! :)

i first discovered the wonders of Kdrama when i stumbled on Dramabeans 5 years ago looking for Goong. Thank you javabeans for creating this blog! Visiting your site has been part of my daily clock-to-do list (just like vitamins?).

Now back to CH. This drama has literally and i mean literally had me chewing my nails while watching it in excitement and anticipation! It sooooo good. that you can't get enough of it. And when you thought that you've seen the best scenes -it would sneak up to you with cute suprises.

I was never a Lee MinHo fanatic - i always thought that he is a pretty and dainty boy. But this drama changed that impression - definitely an improvement in his acting skills and i am now seeing him in a new light as man - hot lead man.

I was thinking last night about the last scene, of "Oh no, Nana, how are you going to get out of this one?" Then I remembered she had that tomato in her hand. Echoing back to an early episode, of YJ's prowess with apples, what if Nana throws that tomato, hits Psycho Daddy in the eyes, temporarily blinding him as she leaps out of the way. It would be so cool, and totally plausible in City Hunter's universe.

First of all, thank you so much Javabeans for the super-fast recaps! ;)

i can't believe how fast you did it!!

and as expected, it is full of priceless morsels which would take a lot longer for me to comment on, so more on how AWESOME your recap is later...

...

for now, i wish to give an observation of mine which has been on my mind for some time and now i think its as good a time as any to bring it up...

i find it highly interesting that some commentors are saying that they understand Jin Pyo's motivation for his bloodthirsty revenge and thus Jin Pyo's actions make sense/understandable to them...the motivation being the "emotional substance" (in the words of anais) between Jin Pyo and his comrade, Yoon-sung's father...

what i find puzzling is how is it that such commentors fail or do not wish to see the emotional substance on the part of Yoon-sung and his mother - how they were dragged into Jin Pyo's warped world-of-revenge-at-all-costs without being given a choice about it...

i can understand Jin Pyo's warped sense of wanting to do right by his fallen and betrayed comrade because my father and brother are also from the army and they have told me innumerable stories of how tortured they felt having lost their so-called blood-brothers-in-arms and how they felt totally and utterly helpless and guilty that they survived, while their dearest comrades did not...

but to take the path that Jin Pyo has taken...

well, all i can say is, this is the world of drama...

but i can't help but feel that it is puzzling that there are people who are quick to defend Jin Pyo's actions but not as quick to defend the victims of Jin Pyo's heartless vendetta...

puzzling, interesting, disturbing...

KDL - Let me clarify one more time that you've misunderstood my points, at the least and perhaps others' points as well. I never once said that I understood (as in condone, that seems to the intended meaning) Jinpyo's motivations. I said the opposite. That the show had been lacking in grounding (read, not the same thing as justifying) his vengefulness.

I just finished rereading Frankenstein. Jinpyo is like a poor copy of Frankenstein. The monster's transgressions remain transgressions, through and through. That doesn't mean the germ of the pain (that eventually grew into an unjustifiable anger, hatred, and violence) resulting from the foundational violence is negated or ought to be disregarded. Similarly, Jinpyo experienced such foundational trauma (though which, again let me repeat, doesn't justify the ensuing destruction) but the Show hasn't made it as meaty as it could have. Right now, the Show is turning him into a caricature of evil, putting so much focus on him turns him into a red herring that makes us lose sight of that foundational violence (the gang of 5's utter disregard for all but their advancement)
that begot JP's own undeniable fall from grace by making the evil of the gang of 5 seem to pale in comparison to JP's.

In other words, I wanted the Show to show 1) Jinpyo as not evil incarnate, for that's too simplistic, but as human and 2) what we regard to be his loathsome, savage inhumanity to be actually a capacity inherent in even the best of us. Yes, I fully believe we all can degenerate at varying set points.

As for Jinpyo, my point is not that I understand him but that the Show wasted an opportunity.

Ultimately, I want(ed) a tragedy of Greek or Shakespearean proportions of a Show that obviously has no intention of being one, even if it shows the potential to be one. (And I've realized all this from verbalizing what was initially just a vague sense of disappointment, so here's to thinking out loud.)

I hope this makes you better understand what I meant.

anais - i appreciate your detailed and clear explanation on your point because it helps a great deal in understanding your point of view...

i understand your hopes for how CH COULD BE, considering the premise and the direction it seems to have hinted at...

actually after watching ep 12, knowing how ep 11 ended, i did feel slightly deflated because the ending was so tantalising in that it could have led CH in the direction that you mentioned but at the same time i somehow knew that from watching so many Kdramas, it did not expect the PD or makers of CH to take that direction because i don't believe the CH makers are prepared to deal with the flak they are bound to receive from the audience who want YS and NN to be together...

you brought up 2 valid points abt what you wanted the Show to show and i agree totally that (and ive mentioned this before) if a person is pushed too far, he/she is capable of the unthinkable...

i am speaking from personal experience...20 years ago, my male second cousin who was 3 years old was kidnapped, tortured (as in mutilated) and murdered because the kidnappers had a grudge against the child's father...

i am glad i brought up the question abt my impression abt commentors' comments abt Jin Pyo because it resulted in your detailed response and allowed me to appreciate your take on how CH has turned out as opposed to the direction you had been hoping it had taken...

but you had not had a single day off in a month or even half a night's sleep each night and yet you have the energy to drop by here with your comments? wow!!

Come late August, I'll be a lot better. So just six more weeks.

@anais

"Let me clarify one more time that you’ve misunderstood my points, at the least and perhaps others’ points as well."

Anais, i believe that i have NOT misunderstood your points (or as you said, others' points as well) because if you had read my comment clearly, i was voicing simply my impression of the comments written but i don't believe it technically means i have misunderstood anything...

a person's perception is his/her reality based on what is there...

Anais, I would appreciate it if you DO NOT easily assume that i am trying misunderstand people...or that i am, as you said before, effectively trying to suppress differences in opinion because it is not just false but the fact that you said it in that way is truly unfair and offensive.

once a commentor posted a comment, he/she should be prepared to have the comment be commented on...
thus that equate to trying to suppress the person's expression??

@KDL -

I genuinely appreciate the exchange we just had in this particular thread. I am glad too we were able to reach this point.

So in hopes of continuing to clear the air...

I want you to know I never said you were intentionally trying to misunderstand anyone else. With the exception of seriously manipulative and selfish people OR politicians, I don't think anyone INTENTIONALLY tries to misunderstand. I certainly didn't intend for my comment to come across as suggesting so. Earlier in response to another comment from you, I pointed out the wording that made me feel personally targeted, and I hope you can see where I was coming from. I too believe those who leave comments ought to be prepared for comments back, but I did feel singled out repeatedly when there were others who were making similar points.

I do believe that there were misunderstandings, on both our sides, it seems. Which is understandable given the medium in which we are communicating. So shall we shake hands and move past this?

On one hand, having Nana die would have brought back the epicness of the first episode. That episode was pure action/thriller, while the rest of CH so far has been like rom-com/melo with action sidelines. At least how I see it. If Nana died, it would have changed the tone of the drama back to a straight action/thriller. Which would have been nice.

On the other hand, I feel like having Nana die would have made Yoon Sung too despondent. As much as I would have liked CH to focus more on revenge and less on romance, I have to admit that they are cute together, and Yoon Sung really seems like he couldn't live without her. Therefore, I wouldn't want to see him carry out his revenge without having a chance to really be happy after it's all over.

I guess I'd like to see it end like Return of Iljimae, where at the end, Iljimae returned to Wol-Hee and was finally able to lay down and rest, his work completed. Although Nana is different from Wol-Hee in that she is actually a part of Yoon-Sung's revenge team now (which I love!!) rather than staying at home waiting, I'd like to see CH end with Yoon-Sung quietly settling down with Nana. Just my opinion :)

I was uneasy too about whether Nana would die or not, but "if" we stick to the original story, she doesn't. But now, with her every growing amounts of near-death experiences, I wonder if Jin-pyo will successfully kill her this time... which is not what I want of course, but that guy's stare was enough to make me stop drinking tea for a few seconds.

another observation :

does being sweet, feminine, loving, gentle and womanly make a girl/woman less interesting, appealing, weak or real, desirable?

but a kick-assy, rough, aggressive, edgy, angsty, sharp-tongued girl/woman is more interesting, appealing, strong, real, desirable?

there are comments wanting Na Na to be more of the latter (kick-assy...), because somehow being the former (sweet...) is making Na Na a less attractive character...

but Na Na is a combination both and i think that is as close to being a REAL girl/woman as we can imagine...

a woman who is able to be both the former and latter at appropriate and relevant moments in her life is to me a more interesting, appealing, strong, REAL and desirable character than one who is ALWAYS the former or ALWAYS the latter...

because the way i see it, being womanly, sweet, loving, caring DO NOT make a woman a weakling or wilting wallflower, because there IS strength in being womanly, sweet, loving, caring...

and being kick-assy does not necessarily mean the woman is stronger - just strong in a DIFFERENT way...

And btw kaye, I absolutely love your insights..You were careful, considerate, just and positive the way you worded it... :)

I totally agree with you, NN's character is getting all fired up now because she can kick ass but YS fell for her because she's the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. For a man who experienced hell in a sense, NN's character would have been really ideal. Yes, there are times that she might have shown her flaws but that what's make it more perfect. Isn't YS has some flaws as well? For me personally, in a kdrama world, the way she portrayed NN is the way NN should have been portrayed. Differing views? Totally cannot get away with it.. That's reality. But my own reality is that, NN is a as REAL TO ME. :)

thank you, smashingalou dearest, for seeing what i am trying to say ;)

just to share the words of a man on this matter - my dear hubby :

most men know that women are not one-dimensional creatures, and so they expect women to portray many sides to her character, which makes such women more interesting, intriguing and appealing and loved by most men;

most men would be attracted to and respect a woman who is always being her real self, whether or not the woman is his ideal type;

and that most men would be able to sense when a woman is just trying too hard, so we shouldn't even try to do it...

and that most men would be turned off by women who try to deny/suppress their innate, natural selves, by pretending to be who they are not;

by all means, be as kick-assy or feminine as you see fit, but the point to remember is BALANCE and being both feminine and kick-assy WITHIN REASON...

for there is strength and beauty in being feminine or kick-assy...

if only we women know... ;)

@kaye, i totally understand how you feel..I too felt like I was totally losing myself to CH world ( and I mean seriously) after that heart-wrenching end of EP 11. For some reason, it affected me more than how I should be affected just by watching a show. It took me awhile as well to put my feet back on the ground and let reality touch it. (That CH insanity we've been talking about previously, I am ridiculously thinking it's getting onto us now).

Somehow, the way CH was created (no matter what other's say) FOR ME, it was BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED!

But no matter how, i would please want you to put yourself together as we still need to carry on til the end. We need to be with YS in his every war or else who would be rooting for him?!! Hehehe! :)

Thanks for the more interesting question, kaye.

I too think it's the pairing of the two: sweet and kick-assy. It means that she can be his partner not just someone he is always protecting. She can be the soft friend that tells him it's ok to love his mother, the wet roommate that he can't take his eyes off, and the scooby gang member that fights for him.

I want to be loved for my lovableness, helped when I need it but also step up and be a protector.

It's rare enough that it's a welcome surprise, maybe that's why it's getting such a strong reaction. I get weary in drama where the hero is always running to save the bumbling girl. It becomes weak.

@mandelbrotr ;)

thank you so much for articulating so well what i have been thinking abt how NN's role can best complement YS's in CH because it would allow for a more realistic portrayal instead of the typical one- or two-dimensional cardboard cut-outs of most female leads in kdramas...

and you are right that perhaps it is so rare that Kdramas portray female leads to be a combination of (or the best of both worlds) of femininity and kick-assiness that showing NN as one seems to be causing quite a stir... ;)

...

"I get weary in drama where the hero is always running to save the bumbling girl. It becomes weak."

you are so right, mandelbrotr, and i can't agree with you more because in reality, most women are NOT damsel-in-distressy but strong, confident and can take good care of ourselves even without the proverbial "knight-in-shining-armour"...

and most men in reality are not always strong and hero-like, but can feel vulnerable, weak, tired, less than perfect and thus the women who can provide the strength, warmth, comfort, compassion and support will be much appreciated - or so said my hubby... ;)

just sharing some JUICY, JUICY NEWS about our LEE MIN HO...

News from Hancinema, June 30, 2011...

LEE MIN-HO IS 'PRETTY BOY SENSATION' AGAIN THROUGH CITY HUNTER

Source | 2011/06/30 | 819 views | Permalink |

Lee Min-Ho is gaining tremendous popularity through his drama once again.

Lee Min-ho is currently proving the real value through the SBS drama "City Hunter".

WITH THE ENDING OF MBC DRAMA "THE GREATEST LOVE", CITY HUNTER ROSE TO THE THRONE AND IS SHOWING SIGNS OF GOING OVER 20% WHICH THE FORMER ONLY MANAGED TO DO ON IT'S LAST EPISODE.

The advancement of "City Hunter" is thanks to Lee Min-ho and of course, Park Min-yeong. However, they say that he is indeed the core of leading the drama.

It is true that his previous MBC drama "Personal Taste" from last year didn't do quite as well as his first KBS 2TV drama "Boys over Flowers" in 2009. However, he is re-living the fame he experienced in again in "City Hunter".

Going to action schools and preparing for the drama in other ways, he is earning the favor of viewers with his high level action and natural acting. Not only to women love him but even male viewers are taking his side.

His many faces in the drama are causing a big issue among viewers giving him the title, 'thousand faces of Lee Min-ho'.

His management chairman Han Soo-han from Starhaus said, "Lee Min-ho is especially attached to this drama. He is working very hard not to make the nicknames he's earned just modifiers but to be called a real 'actor'".

Source : news.nate.com/view/20... ( Korean )

- Yey, I totally agree with the "Thousand Faces of Lee Min-Ho. City Hunter gave Min-Ho a chance to prove he's not just a pretty face but definitely someone who can act as well. And HIS ACTING IS REALLY GOOD... :)

So happy with this news, the entire team of City Hunter deserved it.. :)

Thanks for another awesome recap. Another heart-attack-inducing cliffhanger...I suppose Show has successfully graduated from cliffhanger university with a whopping magna cum laude xD cannot wait till next week...I'm connecting with all the characters on all ends and it seems like every minute, every minute second watching the drama, I'm living and breathing with each of the character. CH rocks!!!

My sister and I were flailing and screaming and squeeing all the way through the episode, I think this was my favourite yet BECAUSE (and this just to add to the many wonderful comments and the awesome review here) Yoon-Sung actually did not revert to pushing Nana away after her getting shot and patched up again but actually behaved nice to her. I know, the dickish playboy was just a cover but when she was about to leave the house I thought he was actually going to let her go because he cannot express his ~feelings~ properly BUT THEN HE HUGGED HER AND I WAS SCREAMING AGAIN.

I also enjoyed that the team was working together at Yoon-Sung's house as the base: a bit like James Bond, a bit like Batman (Alfred included) and I love it when people from different backgrounds work together for a common goal (a propos Buffy, one of my favourite thing was Spike teaming up with the Scoobies).

Also, the clothes shopping? The hair washing?
Guuuuuuuh.

I really wish that City Hunter / prosecutor could have some awesome Batman / Commissioner Gordon realtionship going on but I think they guys will still have to go a way for that but maybe they could become closer after CH gave Young-ju the tip-off about his father which set things going in that area..

This is my favourite drama right now, I am so happy.

SHE'S ALIVE!!!! YAY!!

What an ending, though! Jin-pyo is crazy! Doesn't he want his son to be happy? I'm thinking no. He's raised him for the sole purpose of revenge, and he can't let him fall in love. Well, to bad for you, Daddy, that's exactly what happened! hehehe. Instead of saying, "Oh, kids will be kids!" Jin-pyo is saying, "You ain't falling in love if I have anything to say about it!" Which is absolutely crazy!

I've never read the City Hunter manga. Is it even in the US? But, from Javabeans comments section, I'm guessing City Hunter is supposed to have a female sidekick. Who better than "bear Nana"? Come on, Show, you can't kill her off! Let her dodge him. Let Yoon-sung break through the glass or something and beat up Jin-pyo! Or something!

Thanks for the recap, Javabeans! Totally agree that they should do a Season 2. That would be awesome! Can't wait for episode 13! Nana, don't die! Be safe!

Who else squeed endlessly over the scene where Yoon-sung goes nuts at Ahjusshi's suggestion to wash Na Na's hair? Seriously, he's soooo adorable when he's jealous!

me! me! me!

I always always luuuurve the couple-ly stuff

Also, I loved it when YS was holding Nana's hand in the beginning of episode 11.

He's super cute when he's jealous
And don't even get me started with the 'wink'!

Oh yes, they were very cute holding hands together in ep 11. How can Lee Min Ho be so TALL?!

But I def liked ep 12 better. More coupley moments in it.
So far my fav episode of city hunter is 6 and now 12. I liked episode six because it was the one with the epic Min Ho evil-sexy-bubbly laugh (in regards to the dog poop).

(Possible Spoilers Below)

I wanted to share some spoiler speculation that my sister has had since she saw Kyung Hee get into the car with the president in episode 3. She believes the president is Lee Yoon Sung's real biological father, therefore making the president's daughter that is crushing on him his half-sister!

I noticed that in episode 11, that one guy that is part of the gang of five threatened to reveal a secret he knows about the president. I think it has something to do with his previous relationship with Kyung Hee.

I think it would be an awesome twist, given the fact that Jin Pyo has no idea and hasn't factored that into his grand revenge plans.

What do you all think? I think it makes sense and is just the kind of surprise twist they like to throw into these dramas.

that would be quite the twist, but I don't think the president would have the heart to cheat with KH behind her husband's back AND kill him...that would just be LOW...and I dont' see the president being that evil.

i don't know. to me that would seem like a twist just for the sake of having a twist. Also, if the pres did have an affair with yoon sung's mother, so what? how could the big five blackmail him with that--i mean in comparison to what he allowed to happen back in 1983 it just seems trivial.

Of course, it would be interesting thinking about what it might mean for yoon sung. actually it would add stakes and give him a reason to REALLY protect the pres from Jin-pyo.

Boy would yoon-sung's daddy issues go through the roof with that one.

I don't know. I guess we'll see how it plays out soon enough.

Exactly. I think even Barney from HIMYM would think this is too much of daddy issues!

'How I Met Your Mother' - US tv show.

Barney is like the biggest playboy ever and has no problem using ANYTHING, and i mean anything to get a girl to bed.
He even has this 'play book' (where he writes all his 'tricks')!lol
He esp. likes girls with 'daddy issues':)
(He would talk about the issue with the girl and gains her 'whatever' thus giving him access to her pants!)

The show is funny, but not as funny as FRIENDS.

I find it ridiculous.

RIDICULOUS. It's not like the girl is a NURSE, but a VET?

And she can do all this crap? I get why City Hunter couldn't get proper medical tratament, but why not Nana? WTH.

I was wondering about that too. Why cant she go to a hospital? Will they find and kill her? So...what about alarming the police?/stopping them?/watching over her?...

I wish I was more into the love story...I would not see the flaws and holes this drama has...

For the last 2-3 episodes I have a feeling they have changed the plot: from revenge to some kind of "protection-of-my-girl-from-my-own-father" plot.
When JP ordered YS not to fall in love, I thought he wanted to protect the loved ones...from the 5 bad guys, not himself...

This just proves my theory: long dramas are not well written. Usually writers have to come up with SOME plot so there is enough material for 20-50... episodes.

I had no problem with that point. I think guns are illegal in Korea so that would have brought the authorities into it if she went to the hospital. Guns are highly regulated and Korean civilians are hardly ever brought into the hospital for gunshot wounds so it would be really suspicious.

Hi everyone,

I love reading all your comments; it really helps the days in between episodes pass a teensy bit faster!

I can't stop thinking about this show - I didn't expect that I would like it this much when I first started watching it, but I am SO GLAD I did!

I love how this drama has a manga feel to it, since I was a huge manga/anime fan in my teens, early twenties. I'm also so impressed with Min Ho: I watched him in Personal Taste, but Yoon Sung's character is so much cooler, and he plays him with so much pazazz and charisma that I think this will be his signature role for a while!

I also absolutely love the chemistry between him and Min Young, she is so beautiful and a great actress. I'm so glad that they match eachother in acting ability.

It makes me sad to read comments from many fans that want to see Nana die; it would just break my heart since YS would be so devastated :( And I'm not all that sure that it would add so much to his character if she were to die- do we *want* him to be a crazed, killing machine? I certainly don't.... What makes his character great is his heart, and I don't think he would kill Jin Pyo, even after what he did to him.

For the next ep, I'm thinking that Jin Pyo may kidnap Nana with the help of his lackey (maybe he'll come up behind in a car and whisk her away?) and threaten YS with harming her if he doesn't do what he says. I don't think he's going to kill her.

I'll be stalking the Viki spoiler page for any snapshots or tidbits from filming or what not, can't wait for next week!!!

The dad is getting on my nerves. What kind of father thinks that revenge is more important than their kid. I know that they are not real father and son so maybe that is why he feels that his son is expendable but even I love my doggie like my kids. I have this fear that the dad is going to force him to decide between him and Nana.

in the last scene where the bitchy girl rings her mum to ask whether the city hunter dropped the money at her house, i INSTANTLY THOUGHT THAT her parents saw the extra cash and pocketed it themselves

i like how dramabeans mentions it is the bitchy girl from the previous eps so i guess my assumptions were wrong

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SERIES THIS HALF OF THE YEAR

cos there is action, pizazz (thats not a word i dont think), suspense, cute and senior actors that can act and finally it has a feel of THE TIME OF THE DOG AND WOLF with Lee Jun Ki

So much better than baby face and lie to me, it was fun at the start and now got too cute at the end which is why it got boring, waiting all the miss ripley is finished so i can watch it in one go

have a nice friday/sat from me

guys, while searching for anything about CH to quench my thirst for the show, I found a poster for CH that pictures a guy in sideview (he looks like MinHo though) but his face is covered with hair face..It made me wonder the significance of that photo, could it be something we'll expect in the end?

Anyone who has seen that poster as well?

I believe you're talking about the cover of one of the OSTs? oldish looking man, side view, blue-ish background?
Lots of people think it's YS in his later years, but no lol. That guy's the singer of one of the songs on the OST :P

Anyone know when extensions usually get announced? is it usually toward the end of the show's run, or in the middle? I'm hoping they'll extend it by maybe 4 episodes or so cuz it seems like there's still a lot of story to tell. Wonder if 8 episode is enough to cover them all?
