Han Ji-hye in W magazine

That’s quite a lot of hair Han Ji-hye (The Duo) is sporting in her photo spread for W Korea magazine, but she’s one of those actresses who can pull off a lotta look.

Her look, achieved with the addition of lots of hairpieces, has the effect of combining a modern minimalism with a classical Korean touch — in fact, she reminds me of the gisaeng she played in the period action film Like the Moon Escaping From Clouds.

The overall result makes my neck ache in sympathy pangs, though; the pieces added a weight of 10 kg to her head. It’s a wonder it didn’t snap her tiny neck, though it does remind me of being walked home from school by grandma, who insisted on carrying my brother’s trumpet by balancing it on her head, the whole way home. That’s what we call a skill. Also a traffic-stopper.

Han recently wrapped her MBC sageuk The Duo, where apparently she inspired many viewers to aggravation as Dong-nyeo, the love interest caught between Chun Jung-myun and Lee Sang-yoon. She’s currently considering her next project.

She is a beautiful woman, but this photo spread is disturbing. That much hair, fake or not, is a problem.

I'm pretty sure the amount of hair in that last photo is physically impossible to grow not to mention carry....HJH can't even hold her head straight!

What's there to be jealous of?

HJH is a lovely actress with a great, fun personality - but she has gotten a bit too skinny over the past year or so (not Jung Ryu Won-type skeleton skinny, but still, probably more so than what's really healthy).

making comments about a large girl to lose weight because you find her disgusting is considered rude, but why is it that people find it so easy to tell skinny girls to eat a burger because you find their appearance scary? skinny girls hurt too.

I agree with you. Why do people think calling a skinny girl ugly and saying she needs to go to buffet is less hurtful than calling an overweight girl fat?

I bet the same people who makes the rude skinny comments would rather be Han Ji-hye's weight than be 30lbs over weight.

I mean if they had a choice, they'll choose Han Ji-hye's weight than be 30lbs overweight. I know that's what I'll choose.

There's a diff. btwn being naturally thin and starting to look "gaunt."

The calorie-restricted diets these female celebs undergo are well documented and such remarks are said out of concern for their health (well, hopefully anyway).

Required fields are marked *

Can anyone imagine how thin that girl really is if the camera adds between 5-10 lbs?

I think these comments send a message to the celebrity that they don't look attractive or healthy when they are THAT skinny. Slender, slim, etc., are usually meant as compliments. But, SKINNY is not a compliment, it has negative connotations.

Han Ji-hye is?/was? a pretty girl, but you wouldn't know it by looking at these photos. Send that message directly to Han Ji-hye. These criticisms have the effect of not encouraging others to attain/maintain an unhealthy weight or lifestyle by approving or accepting an unnatural image.

What message are we supposed to be sending to Han Ji-hye? That she isn't attaining/maintaining a healthy weight or lifestyle for herself? How would we know that? How are we privy to information that would allow us to make an informed decision about her life? That's unfair and an ill-advised.

some people are genetically skinny and also have a fast metabolism.

besides these are photospreads how much do you wanna bet they've been photoshopped

True - but as people get older, it gets harder for them to stay as skinny as they were when they were younger.

So when someone gets noticeably skinnier than when they where younger, warning bells start to go off.

HJH in Duo - LOL. Actually, it was a lot more complex than Dong Nyeo being a love interest (to the small extent that she was, it wasn't a huge feature in the plot or characterisations). We were tossing between "Who is this Dong Nyeo woman and why is she behaving like this?" and "Why can't we feel this actress?"

Dong Nyeo as a character is quite complex and nuanced. She doesn't conform to a type. Her worldview seems wonky to modern sensibilities, and on the surface puzzling given her background (Because, we know for instance that children of abusive parents never become abusive themselves, right? Not saying there was abuse in Duo, but that people are more complex than typical drama characterization). So Dong Nyeo was always going to be hard to pull off. In the end, while I understood why Dong Nyeo was under-played (if she were in-your-face acted she could have become a crazed parody of herself), I still think HJH was not quite up to the job. We didn't need more emoting or histrionics. But we did need more depth and conviction.

Watch out for a fabulous review of the fabulous Duo, coming up soon on Thundie's Prattle!! *shameless self-promotion*

Ah, "Portrait of a Beauty" (the Korean Mona Lisa...seriously, both paintings' gazes are ambiguous/ambivalent-looking)?

Now that I look closely to the 1st 2 pics, she most resembles thr gisaeng in the painting...

On a separate note. I eat a lot but people still tell me I'm too skinny. Short of getting myself pumped with fat, I don't know what else to do. -_-'

To people: be thankful HJH only wore the wig...she'll be woed upon if the wig had been attached with the traditional hairpieces/hairpins/flowers/ribbons/etc. ala Royal Wedding hats & head-pieces(*cough*Beatrice*cough*), and mind, hairpieces attach to heavy Korean-styled wigs add to the weight...

Song Hye-gyo (if anyone remembers) in her "Hwang Jin-i" poster photo-shoot wore a humongous gache (gisaeng wig) weighing 5 kilos...I don't know if the hairpieces (which looks heavy in itself) contributed to the total 5-kilo weight, or added more than 5 kilos...
