Say I have iris flowers. My last flower just bloomed. What all do I cut back? Everything or just the dead flower stems? My iris’ don’t seem to entirely die during the winter, they stay green.
MJP, ooh gardening! I’m just cutting back the stalks with the dead flowers so other perennials can shine. In the fall I cut the leaves down to about 6″ for winter. I have about 4 colors of purple in the front of the house. So pretty.
Just finished watching GL 13 and committed to making dreaded contractor phone calls before watching any more. It’s an effective carrot.

I lot of people around here, look at me and think that I am just an obnoxious “Asshole,”; that should not be around this blog, the fact that I am a “Guy,” has also brought ridicule to my persona, to the point that I have been called, a “Western Dog,” and also my “Sexuality.” has been put into question.
So what this has to do with the current status of DramaBeans?
I have mention this before: in the past year the readership of DramaBeans has increase beyond what most people realized, and with that I want to say that the “Intellectual Quality,” of the post’s has decrease, the amount of “Respect,” directed not only towards JB and GF, but in general is beyond what we should patronize, just take a look at the “Lie To Me ,” thread and we can see all the hatred and vitriol that is brewing over there, let alone the “Open Thread,” where every other comments is about: “Oh My GooD.” that guy is sooooooo hot, etc.,etc.
I am personally tired to have to read 500 post to find something that is “Intellectually stimulating,” other than to read how “Lee Min- Ho,” ass is really Hot OH MY GooD, OH MY Good.”
Some people around here lately have made the “OT” their personal blog, and all they post is nothing but nonsense, I am not going to point any fingers but you guys know who you are!
I also notice that most of the old timers have gone into hiding, I a can venture to say that the main reason why that has happen is because; the amount of trolling that takes place on this site, and the amount “Fan Girling,” that has replace some serious commentary, take for instance the “Miss Ripley,” where 1 out of 8 post, is a derogatory comment on LDH’s looks, and to be honest all that “shit” is getting old really fast.
I will be the first to acknowledge that every one here is entitle to their own opinion, but what really “Hurt,” my feelings was the fact that somebody try to drag “Ockoala” in to the Lie To Me flame wars, and try to put her “reputation” on the line, while most “newbies” do not know that she is one of the “Original Old Timers,” round here, and I am the first one who took her side.
I personally do not care that people around here do not like me or do not care about what I write, but when the people who post in this blog, have gone out of their way to insult, and to drag a “good friend,” of this blog as my friend Ockoala the for me is time to take a step back and reevaluate, whether I want to continue being and active poster here at DramaBeans…..?
And in all honesty I do not want to be part of a cyber-culture that behaves in that way, hiding behind a handle to malign people and their character. Shame on you guys for allowing people to do that to Ockoala, I really thought that she had more friends around this blog but apparently not. Having said that:

Hmm. Amg1, I’m hoping the irises aren’t the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Makes me think about the nature of blog culture. Being relatively new I only know the environment as it is at the point that I entered. I too find the LTM firestorm a little distressing and want people to appreciate CH for more than LMO’s looks. But I love the friendliness of the OT and like that people share a little of themselves beyond our shared passion for kdrama.

Amg1 Please don’t go! You are one of the saner people here! I love your discussions and witty comments. Yes, it is true OT has changed over the years. I read all the recaps, but rarely comment anymore. I remember spending every Friday glued to my computer so that I could hang out at the OT. I rarely come by anymore. Most of our gang has stayed connected on FB, where we still have heated discussions, but at least we are civilized with each other. HUGS! I wish you all the best in life. You are a great man who fights for people who are less fortunate than us. May God Bless You.

Hi! Are you excited for a break? Will you get one or are you working? Any vacation plans?
I am toying with a few in my mind, but need to do some research. I am thinking about going to a lodge in the mountains for my son’s 4th birthday and mom-in-laws b-day. We have had party’s at my house since my son was born and thought it would be a nice change. But not quite sure if it will work out. The other one would be to take him canoeing for his birthday, but that would exclude the in-laws, so not sure about that.

I volunteered once to do a commercial and I have to say that I am not cut out to do acting. They just kept asking me the same questions over and over again and I had to keep giving the same answers. There was no “CUT”, just continually asking the questions until the camera crew was happy.

when My Girl was big here back in 2006 (???), my friend who works for the local TV station who had the MG rights invited me to go see that-guy-from-my-girl (obviously he wasnt a lee dong wok fan). i didnt come, i think i only fell in love with LDW like a year after. haha, late bloomer i know
The cute Kim Bum was also here 2 yrs ago to shoot a local softdrink CF with a local actress, he guested on my friend’s show…again i missed that. BUMmer rite?
last year i stayed in singapore for 3 months, and like 2 weeks after i left, Lee Min Ho visited and my best gay friend had tickets..boohoo!!! i died with envy!
also last september, Rain, Lee Jungjin and Daniel Henney and the whole cast of fugitive was in cebu for filming and had a presscon in manila. I actually planned to come for Daniel Henney and now i dont remember why I didnt.haha..

The media wasn’t blocking the door. She could have walked it in a disguise. She could have gotten in the same way Jin had gotten the media away from his house, a fake ambulence call. Where there is a will, there is a way! I think that in this instance the Hong Sisters imagination was deliberately stunted to create effect for the show.

I can empathize. I’ve watched show episodes on NatNatVip where the subs did not make sense. Then I realized, later, that these subs (usually of episodes that are uploaded almost as soon as the raw episodes are aired) were generated from translation software (e.g. Google Translate). Hardly idiomatic.
Would like to believe that they replace these early versions with fan-subbed (edited and quality controlled) versions later.

I ran into a friend earlier this week who had just started watching Lie to Me. I kept letting my feelings slip about the writing, so I had to stop talking to her about it. To change the subject, I pointed her to Best Love and City Hunter (Gu Jun Pyo got her, she just looked at me when I said Lee Min Ho). With that: Dokko Jini noooooooo! Ae jung save him ahhhhhhh! OK, got that out. . . . and ep 8 of CH was quite good, quite quite good.
Wow! It must be nice that your friends even watch Kdramas. I am the only one in my cirlce of friends and no one else seems interested it watching. However, I did get my sister to watch some.

City Hunter! After watching both 7 & 8 yesterday in desperation I went into last week’s OT to post.
I can’t wait until the recap is up to discuss. CH has learned how to do a cliff-hanger. Both eps 7 & 8 ended with good ones. 7 so much that I said, “like hell waiting for the subs to be done, I’m watching the next one!” My hands were at my mouth and the end of 8. Oh, the sound effects!

I was the skeptical fan, wondering why the Hong Sisters chose older cast members (well except for Yoo In Na, Da’ Hawtness!) for this drama. Then I watched the slap on Ae Jung’s face – Tendrils of emotional attachment started to grow in my heart. Every week I anticipated new episodes, and the tendrils sprout vines and azaleas and potatoes and pororo toys and vitamin water. Any semblance of rationality slowly died in my heart, because Show, I like you so much. No. I LOVE YOU!
I don’t want you to end, I’m afraid the tendrils will never recover from the heartache.

I’ve watched Paradise and The Relation of Face, Mind, and Love. I liked them both, Paradise my favorite. It has a very quiet pacing and tells the story nicely. Face, Mind and Love was more funny and fluffy.

I’ve watched Heaven’s Postman, A Dream Comes True, and Triangle so far. I’ve really liked all of them, but I’d have to say that A Dream Comes True is my favorite so far. The little kid in that movie, Chae Gun, totally kills it and is the cutest thing ever!!

Originally I wasn’t going to watch it but out of a whim I did and it turned out better than I thought (I haven’t watched Sex and the City so I had nothing to compare it to). Good acting overall and slightly different as its more edgy than the usual Kdrama. Heroine is not annoying and plenty of eye-candy

Will greatly appreciate your clarifications/comments on the following:
1. On Korean names
Why is Pil Joo sometimes called Dr. Han? Isn’t his surname Yoon (sometimes spelled Yun)?
2. On English subtitles of kdramas
In most, if not all kdramas, English subs use the phrase “send home” rather than “take home”. For instance, in the sentence “It’s late. I’ll send you home,” the context is that the speaker will go with the “you” which is different from the usual meaning of “send home” where the speaker stays put and the “you” goes home on his/her own.
Is this an example of Korean English? If so, is there a convention in English subbing/translation where the accepted idiom in Korea is the one preferred, even if the intended users are, presumably, English speakers and non-Koreans?
3. “I like you”
Koreans, like other Asians I guess, tend to use the word “like” to denote romantic interest more than Westerners. I’ve watched a lot of American movies and rarely, if at all, will a character confess his/her romantic interest in another character with “I like you.” This statement would be taken in a more generic sense.
On the subject of confessing one’s love, I like that in kdramas (e.g., Playful Kiss) and also in Tdramas (e.g., The Devil Beside You), no one seems to frown on female characters doing it. This would have been seen as too forward some years back. Do these reflect what society at large think? I consider it a definite step towards gender equality.
You have brought up stuff I have noticed, too.
When there isn’t an equivalent, they have to make do.
That is why “I’ll leave first” gets translated as is. as opposed to “I’m off.” “I’m leaving now.” seems to be a better fit, but it loses the “first” aspect, which must be important as far as manners?
“I’ll take you home” seems to make the most sense, and sometimes they use it, sometimes they don’t. “I’ll send you” to me means, “I’m going to have someone else take you home.
Then there is the “go in” instead of “go home,” which we say.
The “like” issue is solved in 4th grade when we learn that there is “like you,” and “like you like you,” right?
It would be fun if a subber wanted to play around and put that in for us!

2. The general idea is one of responsibility – as in, I will take responsibility of “seeing” you home.
3. “I like you,” as a translation of Korean, is often times not very accurate.
The problem is that it is very difficult to translate (in a fan sub, flying at between 900 and 1300 lines per an hour episode), or a line every few seconds, to give the cultural context behind a direct translation.
The korean phrase, said on-screen, IS accurate. How it is said, when it is said, in its proper contextual setting, is likely to be perfectly accurate (unless the script writing is just poor).
But how does one translate an entire culture into a subbing line that will disappear in a few seconds?
For those who are immersed in Korean culture, or who have had sufficient background, will be able to pick up on the phrases and the meaning, even if they do not speak Korean that well.
For the rest of the k-drama watchers out there, all I can say is that the more you watch, the better you will be at picking up the nuances of various phrases that come up again and again.

Korean, for all its idiosyncrasies, is quite beautiful as a language, with its descriptive emotive phrases and potential for dry contextual humor that laces almost everything.
But if you want to understand Korean, probably what is most important is the idea of respect and rules of conduct.
Now, this seems like a question of culture, but this kind of thing pervades translations and subbing, because subbers are often left with merely translating the words, and being forced to leave out all of the meaning.
When a person says, “I’ll leave first.” There is plenty that is being said other than noting the order in which people will vacate the immediate vicinity.
“I’ll leave first” may indicate a sense of entitlement, whether by class, gender or sense of righteousness, or it could be something else entirely (or it could be asking for permission), or it could just mean just what the words itself mean.
See the thing is, there are things that a lower person (by age, by socio-economic class, by gender, by experience, etc.) should never say to a higher person.
“I’ll leave first,” said matter-of-factly, might raise eyebrows (at the least) if it is said by a lower person to a higher person.
Hmmm, lemme go into this a bit further.
For instance, take the situation of the poor misunderstood heroine, who has suffered humiliation, slander and even calumny at the hands of her one true lub’s rich CEO mother. Why is she just standing there?!! Why can’t she just storm out?
i.e., why can’t she say, “Uhhhh, yeah. Thanks for the insults, potential mom-in-law. Don’t get up, I’ll leave first.”
(LOL).
The heroine can’t say it, she can’t get up. She can’t leave without permission. She is being spoken to, and people who are spoken to, can’t leave until the “spoken to” stuff is done being spoked by the one doing the spoking.
So, saying, “I’ll leave first” could be quite a revelation as to attitude and internal thinking and intent….
that’s really true about korean being a beautiful language samsooki. there are so many treats when you least expect it, particularly when you decide that the sub is just too simple for all the words that were said and you investigate!

So, I’m watching Secret Garden.
My wife and I just started, and we are up through Episode 4.
And there’s a TON of things goodies that just scream out for further explanation, if not already done.
*** SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 4 of SECRET GARDEN ***
Somewhere in the middle of Episode 4, we meet Binnie (Kim Joo Won)’s deliciousy snobby mom, Moon Boon-Hong.
Joo Won’s mom shows up unexpectedly, and deliciously, near the end of Episode 4, and meets Gil Ra Im (Ha Ji Won) for the first time.
The meeting is abrupt and Gil Ra Im is cut to shreds, brutally but quite deliciously, by Joo Won’s mom.
I can’t remember the entirety of the exchange between Gil Ra Im and Joo Won’s delicious mom, but Gil Ra Im, after being torn to shreds by the mom in a delicious fashion, actually is able to self-deprecate herself in such a way that actually makes fun of Joo Won’s family.
TAKE THAT, I cheered, when Gil Ram Im managed the feat, as she bowed quickly and left the room.
But I guess my point is that the subs, while truly excellent (with WithS2, can you expect anything else), couldn’t spare the time to convey all of the niceties and social mores of the exchange.
There is so much there in the exchange, and I was cackling as I watched it, but I guess you sorta had to be there….

The American in me was totally angry with Ae-Jung because she would not cross the line of media at the hospital or sneak her way in somehow.
Can I use your comments to translate that it could be a cultural issue. That a woman can’t do something like that in Korea? If so, why ever not?
Or is this just the writing of the Hong Sisters to create dramatic effect further down the road?
I don’t get why she wouldn’t go into the hospital? The American in me would break through glass with a car to get to the one I loved who could potentially die on the operating table. Why let “rules” stop a person?

I am up to Episode 10. I originally started watching it mid-point after reading the recaps. So I am finally getting to watch it from the beginning.
I wonder if Korean society is really like that, with the men being all domineering like that? I think Secret Garden’s Joo Won’s character is the most “physical” male lead I have seen in the Rom-Com/Rom department. I haven’t watched much of other genre’s.

Ae-jung didn’t enter the hospital because she didn’t want her and Jin’s relationship to be discovered with all the reporters there.
Actually at one point (when they realized there was no other way in), she DID go “to hell with it” and was prepared to enter, but Ae-hwan stopped her because by that time it wouldn’t have mattered since Jin was already in the OR.
It didn’t really have anything to do with her being a woman. “Protecting” him was her motivation.
Yeah, I’m late to the party, but maybe you can answer something for me.
I swear I hear people in dramas saying things like “Ae-jung-i-ga” or “Joo-won-i-ga” — and from what I understand, “i” and “ga” are both particles that go with the subject of the sentence (which to choose depends on whether the noun ends with a vowel or consonant). Am I hearing wrong, or is this colloquial, or what?

Indeed. Watching kdramas have taught me a lot about Korean culture. I find the jondaemal-banmal distinctions in the language truly remarkable. And though I do not drink liquor, am starting to feel a distinct yearning for soju, hehehe.
BTW, I recall that you were in the B.O.N. sub team for City Hall (am I right?). B.O.N. subs are as excellent as those done by the WITHS2 team.

I have not been a drama addict for long and it is only lately that I have realized the very valuable service given by fansubbing teams. Cannot abide those computer-generated translations (when I first encountered them, I went WTF…but then realized they were not outputs of sane human translators. Gah!).
The extent of fansubbing volunteer work is really amazing. We drama addicts can be quite demanding; some even display a sense of entitlement, forgetting that the service is provided gratis et amore.

Overall, I think the Hallyu phenomenon is just awesome. Kudos to the South Korean government for having the vision to use entertainment/pop culture/media/ in promoting things Korean across the globe. We won’t be right here if not for it, will we?
1. Han=韓. it is the same han as in the word for Korea, Hangook (韓国, or Han Country). so, it isn’t “Dr. Han,” as if it were a name. the han in 한의사 (han doctor) refers to traditional (eastern/herbal) medicine, in contrast to a western medicine.
2. i am not a subber, so i can’t speak to preferred subbing conventions. my guess is that the korean verb in its non-idiomatic usage is translated (semi-transparently) as ‘send’ as a default, so that may be why they choose it here too? imo subbing is a craft. might help to keep in mind too that the verbs to take/bring/send can be complicated in other languages, e.g. the french emmener vs amener. english has its own quirks about sending and taking people home.
3. this is complicated. but again, stuff gets lost in translation.

ok, the oldschool chinese-script spelling of the han in traditional medicine is 漢 (which is used when denoting the Han people, as well as in the word for ‘chinese-script/character’ 한자/한문 ), not the han 韓 in korea. but sort of like the current decline of chinese-script use in korea, 韓 is used too in spelling traditional medicine. hello, revisionism via korean nationalism!

2. I’ve never stopped to think about the literal meaning of “sending” someone home before because it’s such a commonplace turn of phrase. It’s purely idiomatic and has the same meaning as taking someone home or seeing them off. Subbers are translating the idiom literally, and I guess it never occurs to us that it might sound strange in English.
3. I don’t think Koreans use “like” in a romantic sense more than westerners, but maybe that’s just me. Saranghe is more like the big L word declaration and for me, would come after the relationship has progressed to a certain. Joahe – I like you – has a wide range of implications, but usually context makes it fairly obvious how the words should be taken. I think that’s true of English as well.

I think they take note of non-Korean viewers, too, as far as considering a show’s success. Plus they make a boat load of cash with the product placements.

Jomo-ya~ Do you think I’m a babo? While I was filming The Duo and you were all gaga over “Kang-ahhhhh!”, I let it slide cuz he is a fictional being– but that excuse won’t work this time! Just last month, I stood next to CSW in the john over at MBC, and I can assure you, both he and his potato are as real as they come. And as for that prettyboy SSH, I know him, too. In fact, *shakes fist*, I’m still mad at him for beating me out by just one place in the “Korea’s Top 50 Most Handsome Men Of 2011” competition. (Now I regret that I made them cut my shower scene in Cinderella Unni.)
Anywho, you announced to the world that I was your One True Love (and pledged that you were gonna try to forsake all others), so when I read in today’s OT that your heart belongs to CSW and SSH (with nary a mention of yours truly), naturally I was all What’s Up with that, Yeo-woo? But I’ve calmed down now. I had a good cry on Ko Hyun Jung-noona’s shoulder, and she filled me in on the needs of a real woman. She also reassured me that CSW isn’t a threat because he’s “sharing his pasta” with Lee Seon Kyun these days. I am a bit worried about the longevity of their relationship though, because I’m pretty sure that LSK had vocal cord enhancement surgery, and I don’t think CSW likes fake tubes. But Noona said that if they do split up, she’ll fix CSW up with SSH because “Big Hands and (a) Hand Towel were made for each other”. That made me feel a lot better.
So I’ve decided to let you off this time, provided you: 1) Take some lessons in constancy from Mrs. Choi, 2) Pinky-swear that you’ll follow the “look but don’t touch” rule in the meantime, and 3) Use that passionate creativity of yours to figure out just how you’re gonna make it up to me next time we’re together. *wink wink*

Isn’t Best Love picking up awesome ratings in Korea? Episode 14 got 2nd nation-wide and 1st in Seoul. It’s just on places like Mysoju/Dramacrazy, etc. where it’s definitely not ranked as high as it deserves.

There are companies who take statistical samples of TV (or radio or Internet) viewmanship (like TNS & AGB) by agreeing with a certain number of households per city and placing a monitor to each chosen household’s TV set (or radio, or computer). Those monitors record the channels that the TV sets access – the time and the day too – so these could be matched to the timeslots, and then to the shows. From these, the companies would know which TV shows are being watched more often. It’s like taking a survey, but with tech gadgets attached to TVs.
“TNS vs AGB? Why different?”
These are two different companies who measure TV viewmanship. They sell the data that they gather (and statistics derived from which) to: media organizations/networks (TV/radio stations, etc.), and advertising agencies.
Media orgs use these ratings to see which of their shows appeal most to the public and from there, derive their production and marketing plans – like whether or not to retain or extend the shows, to retain or increase the timeslot pricing, what types of shows to air at certain timeslots, etc.
Ad agencies, on the other hand, use ratings as basis for the following:
- where to best buy advertisement slots to air their product ads (stations/networks with the most number of shows with high ratings).
- which shows they prefer to air their ads with (primetime shows sell the most)
- bargaining for prices with media orgs (high-rating shows command high prices, low-rating shows often sell ad slots in bulk)
The ratings that come from TNS and AGB are different because these are two different companies who also have different levels of financial capability to put monitors in households. The one with better financial capacity can put more monitors in households, which makes its data (ratings generated) more reliable because of the larger sample that they have.

If I live in Korea, I can give you a better explanation since I can tune in better with the culture’s current climate. But in general, there are a lot of things that affect a shows ratings, and among the most significant are: time slot (this is where the target viewers depend – put it in the morning, then the kids see it; put it early evening, then adults who come home from work get to see it; put it late at night – then it’s for the dedicated viewers, or insomniacs), airing days (weekdays vs. weekends), and shows that air at the same time. So I would say, something with the set of audience (demographics) that gets to watch TV during the airing time of Best Love in Korea is affecting its ratings.

It was a mystery to me too, until the way it works was explained in one of our assemblies.
It used to be that ratings aren’t divulged to the general public. But these days, media orgs realized that making the ratings known can also affect the viewing preferences of audiences. Sometimes people choose to watch shows that have high ratings coz they use at as basis for the shows’ quality and popularity.
Now you know why in our country, the networks brag about ratings.

It depends on which country we’re talking about since their investments vary per region, which affects the number of household samples they can afford. Also, I can’t name which one is better than the other since I work for a company which one of those ratings orgs publish as the leading network in our area. My answer may be viewed as biased.
I suggest that you research about these ratings orgs to know more about how they operate and how long they have been in the business. One indicator of their reliability is the kind and number of agencies and networks that subscribe to their data, which shows how trusted they are by the industry players.

Some dramas may garner low TV ratings but go viral on the net. E.g., You Are Beautiful did not get very high TV ratings but is the most popular in sites like Dramacrazy.

Regarding Internet hits, these can be easily monitored per site, but on the web as a whole, it is quite difficult to gather very reliable data on a particular show’s popularity. So whoever wants to have a good measure on a show’s popularity will have to do so in partnership with the most popular sites that host videos in the Internet, like YouTube, who can generate their own stats on audience hits.
Media orgs have their own teams who do research on shows’ popularity in what they call the “new media” (Internet, mobile phone messaging, etc.). Some orgs even make use of the Internet to have wider audience reach, or to get the most out of a show’s popularity in a way that can’t be done with the usual channels (TV, radio…) anymore – just like what was done with Playful Kiss via YouTube. Other media orgs even publish their shows through their own websites on a pay-per-view-like way.

Oh man, Bonnaroo. I’ve always wanted to go since I live in TN and they usually have good indie bands but the heat and crowds would kill me! I wouldn’t have minded seeing Beirut and Florence and the Machine though.
I would love to go to SXSW even more than Bonnaroo though!
A lot of the bands that played ‘Roo also played at SWSX but at least there you get air conditioning.

Sorry about the delay–life got in the way!
Bonnaroo is a 4 day music and arts festival that takes place in Tennessee. It’s kind of like a modern day Woodstock. You basically camp out for four days, live in your sweat and listen to bands from all around the world come and perform. And its a variety of music too. Rap, jazz, jam, country, blues, rock n roll.
And as someone who lives in TN, it gets HOT as hell in the summer here so those people are might brave to spend 4 days in it!

Finally got caught up on Lie to Me. Sizzle …. Sizzle… OMO it was HOT!!! I plan to watch Best Love next. It’s so hard not to read JB and GF recaps on it. 
Plus, I have friends who have broken down and sobbed this week because of BL. It’s killing me, not knowing what happened and it’s killing my friends because they vowed not to post any spoilers on FB.
I will be in Napa on Saturday ( I won’t be tasting any wine because I don’t drink) Maybe they might have something non alcoholic? Sunday we have a big barbecue with our friends in Campbell. Let me share how I do it… I get up from my seat once in a while to do other tasks. It makes me look busy. (It also makes me healthier since sitting for 2 straight hours makes one more vulnerable to heart disease.) And then I update my boss about my tasks once in a while. I also have a small mirror on my desk to alert me of people who materialize behind me out of thin air. (That’s when I go alt+tabbing.)
