    I have a completely random question…

I’ll explain first how it came about:

So I was reading about nutrition and world cultures and the values given to certain foods, such as good/bad; cold/hot, ordinary/special, medicinal/poisonous, female/male, etc… and as a comment on three different articles that I read, (one of them being from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) they mentioned, well one mentioned that Chinese people disliked milk, then another mentioned that Chinese, Korean and Japanese folk disliked milk and then the other one said that Asians disliked milk…

So my question or two part question is:

Has anybody any idea if this is true? and what’s your own take on milk?

    • 101.1 Carinne

True in a way how Asians in general are lactase deficient. Maybe ‘cos the majority are use to congee/porridge breakfast, rice n’ vegetable meals, in that nature since childhood. I’m not one of them though; let me clarify I’m Asian. Born and bread in ol’ USA, so I’m accustomed to American/Westernized breakfast, i.e. cereal and milk, so it doesn’t phase me. I think those who choose to adapt to a Westernize culture in Asia will share lactose tolerant stories.

It is a matter of preference.

    • 101.2 laya

That made me think a while. You see, I’m from the Philippines and grew up drinking milk… even had my mom send me off to high school with a thermos of milk in my bag. But now I realize that I was an aberration because I was the only one in my class doing that and maybe in the whole school. I think most of us stop drinking milk after a while– like a sign of growing up or something. It’s also like “only kids drink milk.”

      • 101.2.1 Carinne

It’s also like “only kids drink milk.”

LOL! Well, if that’s what it takes to bring out the kid in me, then so be it. ^ , ^ v

Well, living a Westernize lifestyle religiously is kinda hard in Asia. Most of my friends overseas tell me they drink milk when they were little and stop when they got older like during college years and beyond so their stomachs can’t handle the reactive indigestion. (Is it true, breakfast trends are toast, light/baked sandwiches, in Asia? Something fast to much on, on the go.)

Anyways, what’s so important about milk intake anyhow? Improve natural growth development during childhood? Daily source of balance vitamins during adulthood? There are supplements out there to take care of such inadequacies.

        • 101.2.1.1 laya

Mmm, IDK about other countries. I’m kind of an aberration in that I only want bread and mocha [coffee + chocolate] for breakfast [my mom: that's not a breakfast, that's a snack!] cause others usually have rice, eggs, and something fried, like fish or sausage. Hence the popular “tapsilog” – tapa, sinangag, itlog [fried strips of meat kind of like unsmoked jerky, fried rice, and egg].

But yeah, you usually won’t find milk in the house if there’s no children, unless someone else drinks milk. Especially now that creamer’s become popular.

        • 101.2.1.2 ricky the royal highness

Milk has calcium, which is essential for teeth and strong bones formation. Children need it to grow healthily. And children are somewhat hateful of taking pills or supplements, no matter how ‘good’ the pills are. So an easier method would be to ask them to drink milk. Adults are a different matter.

Sorry, my Biology teacher self couldn’t resist answering :)

    • 101.3 MJP

I will state my case in Kdramas:

In Coffee Prince, the female lead delivered milk.
I believe there was one other Kdrama where the lead delivered milk…

Okay that is all I know.

      • 101.3.1 nadoka

Also in can you hear my hart

        • 101.3.1.1 MJP

Ah, that was the other one I couldn’t remember the name. Thank you nadoka!

      • 101.3.2 Cynthia

Didn’t JanDi in BOF deliver milk & newspapers during those times when she wasn’t being rescued by my husband?

        :)

        • 101.3.2.1 tjack

          LOL

      • 101.3.3 laya

I now also remember Eun Sung in Shining Inheritance delivering milk before she reported to the Jin Sung restaurant, and Jun Se helping her out when she got sick XDD

        • 101.3.3.1 ahjummabunny

          bae sooo binnn!!!!
na jin jin/gloria, yoon ji young from definitely neighbors, delivered milk too.

    • 101.4 ricky the royal highness

      Interesting!

I agree that milk is generally food for the westerners. We drink milk and eat cereal now in my household, but I’m trying to remember what I ate usually when I was younger. As far as my dismal memory goes, I must say I never remembered anything lactose in my breakfast diet. I think in my culture, children are used to drinking hot drinks in the morning. Brands like Milo are ubiquitous in every home, even now. :)

    • 101.5 Minnetter

So far my impression that the thing about milk is:

      1) a children’s drink that once you grow up you stop drinking it

      2)That it’s a western type of drink

      3) That the reason that it’s not very present is with the widespread tendency of being lactose intolerence

      4) That it’s pretty much an individual’s choice to drink or not though it’s more common not to drink it

Hmmm… it’s really interesting^^ one of the reasons why I found this really interesting was because of watching dramas where there are milk delivery jobs… so if people don’t drink milk why would they show milk delivery people in dramas right?

some dramas with milk delivery in them:

      - Woori in Can You Hear my Heart
      - Coffee Prince’s Eun-chan
      - Eugene’s character in Love Truly (a.k.a. I really really like you)
      - Jun Sung kyun’s character in Pretty Woman

I think I’ve seen more but I can’t remember right off the top of my head… but yeah^^ thanks everyone for answering :P

    • 101.6 janna

I know quite a few people who just have a sensitive stomach, so they don’t consume a lot of milk/cheese products. I’ve had raw milk and it seems to not hurt my stomach as bad.

I’m the worst person to ask about food. I’d likely eat a sandwich in the morning and something like pancakes for dinner. (I consider most breakfast foods either too rich or too sweet for the morning.)

Something not nutritious and hated by lots of people is root beer. But I like it on occasion.

      • 101.6.1 ahjummabunny

        raw/fresh milk is soo delicious.

    • 101.7 izzie

Well, I read somewhere that milk drinking originated from the Westerners – which is a major part of their daily diet. It said that milk drinking only reached Asia during the West’s exploration/colonization era. It was mentioned in that article that lactose tolerance is acquired in some sort of an evolutionary development/change. So since milk was relatively new to Asians, they were generally lactose intolerant – which might explain the non-preference of milk in the daily diet since you wouldn’t consume something that you know would cause you tummy trouble.

“And what’s your own take on milk?”

I love drinking milk. (Apart from the fact that I have to, since my bones aren’t that strong.) However, there are times when my tummy doesn’t tolerate it, so I don’t drink milk on a regular basis. It’s some sort of a hit-and-miss thing: if I drink today and nothing bad happens, I’mma drink again tomorrow. If tomorrow, my tummy aches after drinking milk, I stop drinking for some days. Btw, my Dad is lactose intolerant so I think it’s a hereditary thing.

    • 101.8 samgetang

Hi Minetter and all milk-drikers here:

To your question: Did the articles you read perhaps mention what kind of milk that the Chinese/Asians did not like to drink? Maybe it is cow’s milk.

There are other milk now available in the market like Goat’s Milk, Soya Milk and even Rice Milk.

I have heard that cow’s milk and other animal milk are being avoided now by those who would like to shift to more healthy eating in the same effort that they would like to refrain from animal meat.

People now are trying to eat more plant-based foods, raw if necessary, so that their nutrients and minerals remain intact which cooking destroys.

Im Asian and I do love to drink milk, of any kind, but after learning that we can also get calcium from our green vegetables, the guilt of not gulping down that warm glass of milk does not bother me anymore. ;-)

      • 101.8.1 laya

Hehe and the Philippine staple: carabao [water buffalo] milk! Yes, it exists. Razon’s puts it in their halo-halo instead of ordinary milk xDD

    • 101.9 momosan

A goodly number of Asians are lactose intolerant. Something like 80% of Central Asians and 90% of East Asians – I’d actually have to look it up, but I can remember looking it up when a few relatives turned up intolerant and one just plain allergic. Basically, milk is for kids because the adult body stops producing the enzyme that allows it to be digested.

So, in a sense, it’s not so much that they “dislike” milk as milk “dislikes” them.

By contrast, your basic European dairy culture types, the Brits? About 10%. OTOH, Native Americans, darned near 100%

In my family (and I’m not Asian, despite the nickname) half of my family is lactose intolerant and the other half isn’t. One is just plain allergic (as in go to the hospital allergic). Makes cooking for the family fun, let me tell ya!

    • 101.10 Jonesy

My best friend is vegan and she has stated that milk drinking started in Europe because of the way the economy was, with a preference given to animals like cows who produce milk. Since cows were being raised and domesticated they were producing milk. As women were required to work, milk became the thing to replace breastfeeding, particularly in upper-class households that could afford milk. That tradition migrated into America. It has become a tradition to drink milk even though your body doesn’t need it.

In America, we’ve subsidized certain industries, including milk, so much that it has become a staple. There are no ways to get other milk though here, like soy, almond, hemp and coconut.

I am American but I prefer coconut milk. As for Kdramas, I remember one (can’t remember title) where the girl had a mustache from drinking a latte and the boy kissed it off (Secret Garden?? No?) And Sam-soon was drinking lattes so maybe milk milk isn’t a think but milk in espresso drinks is.

    • 101.11 Celexa

Maybe the lack of milk/calcium in Asian diets contributes to the short stature of Asians. I don’t mean this to sound racist but just an observation. Is the adaptation of western foods also contributing to the average height increase in eastern population?

      • 101.11.1 Minnetter

that’s quite an interesting hypothesis you have…

    • 101.12 Minnetter

Wow! thanks for all the wonderful responses to my left field question ^^

It’s been really interesting learning about everyone’s habits and the different products – the water buffalo milk was new to me for reals…I want to drink it^^ me personally- I LOOVE milk, my breakfast isn’t complete with out it. and I like to try all different kinds of milk. personally I’ve tried, goat, sheep, and soy besides your everday cow milk.

    “34.1.3.1.4 Viola June 17th, 2011 at 2:18 pm
Guess how old I am?! This is the game for this OT thread. When we reach say, 1350, I will reveal how old I am. Fair?”

Guys, it’s now 1,017 comments as I type this. Just a little way to go.

But the challenge is: we cannot just type any LOL or smiley to fill up the missing gap.

We should send a comment that has some weight in terms of content, thought, even deliberation (does not need to be long but it has to have substance — maybe like an in-depth analysis of Siwon’s abs, anyone? Just kidding, haha!)

Go, OT people :-) Im guessing Viola is in her prime age of early 30′s, am I right? Still single, I guess? (oppsss… should this be next week’s contest? cant this be a bonus?)

    • 103.1 ricky the royal highness

      Haha :)

I’m trusting my Second Thoughts and say that Viola is 29.

      • 103.1.1 Viola

Interesting guesses Your Highness and Samgetang! :) Why do you guys think I am in my early 30′s or 29 ? :)

This is me doing my bit to drive up the comments! :P

        • 103.1.1.1 samgetang

Whoooopps! Are we way off the mark, Viola?

I think you are in your early 30′s because I sense a balance of both maturity and youthful effervescence in you. There is a confidence also in that age born out having proven yourself in the world. It’s an age I like personally, too.

          • 103.1.1.1.1 Viola

Not telling until you reach 1350!! :P

          • 103.1.1.1.2 Viola

Thank you Samgetang! What a lovely thing to say! I am surprised and delighted that I come across as mature, considering the amount of nonsense and just plain silliness I write! :P *hugs*

          • 103.1.1.1.3 ricky the royal highness

I don’t think we’ll reach 1350 for this one, Viola.
Might as well reveal it now. :)

Samgetang, is it too much to say that I wish I’m 18 forever? Haha

          • 103.1.1.1.4 samgetang

@ Viola: anyone who can shift so easily from silly to serious and back is great and mature in my book :-)

@Ricky: are you a Peter Pan, your highness? or are you a Mr Darling? :-)

      • 103.1.2 Viola

Ricky, why did you think I was 29? Please tell me, I really want to know! :)

        • 103.1.2.1 Viola

          @Samgetang

Or maybe Ricky is Merlin, aging backwards.. :P

        • 103.1.2.2 ricky the royal highness

Hey, Viola. I have 30 minutes before I have to teach, so here I am replying you (I should NOT do this)

Oh DANG! You revealed your age on the OT a few weeks ago, if I’m not mistaken. Argghh… why can’t I recall that?

          *seething at self*

I don’t know why I said 29, really. I guess my instincts failed me this time. Hmm, you appear to be mature, is that acceptable?

And is it surprising to say that I could be older than you but you sound so much more like an adult? :)

(No, I’m not revealing my age… yet)

          • 103.1.2.2.1 Viola

awww thank you for taking the time to reply! Ricky, I would say that most of the time we both sound about equally mature, which to say, Not at All mature! :P
I would be sad if it was any other way, I like having someone to play these silly jokes with. :P

But I think you sell yourself short, the reply you posted about the acid attack on Iran was very thoughtful and dare I say, wise. :)

          • 103.1.2.2.2 ricky the royal highness

My sense of maturity comes and goes as it pleases. Most of the times, it’s absent, owing to my silly regal outbursts here in the OT.

And yes, I do enjoy playing our silly games! Makes me smile despite myself. That’s why I said I shouldn’t be posting while working – hard to keep a straight face!

As for being wise, gee, I don’t know. I’ve never been called that before. I do learn a lot by reading all of the serious discussions here in the OT – helped me improve my English and to really ‘think’. :)

    • 103.2 Minnetter

Can I join in and guess??

hmmm, i don’t know why but Viola sounds like she might be around my age, maybe a little older so I’m guessing a quarter of a century, a.k.a. 25 years old.

    • 103.3 izzie

“does not need to be long but it has to have substance — maybe like an in-depth analysis of Siwon’s abs, anyone? Just kidding, haha!”

Substance. In-depth. Analysis. Siwon. Abs. *short-circuiting*

(only Viola can handle these kinds of thoughts.)

    • 103.4 Viola

You are both making me sad!!! :(

      • 103.4.1 Viola

I can not handle that much talk about Siwon’s abs! :P

    • 103.5 Celexa

How did I miss this post? I’m in for posting to get Viola’s age. BTW… did I also miss the post where we found out your gender Samgetang?

      • 103.5.1 samgetang

Hi Celexa, in order to save you from eye strain and head-ache trying to find the answer to that guessing game in the previous OT, here is the answer: Im a girl that’s for sure! :-)

        • 103.5.1.1 Celexa

Aaahhh… :D Our Prince Ricky was spot on!

          • 103.5.1.1.1 ricky the royal highness

Yep, I could sense samgetang’s gender all the way from my Kingdom of Clouds. Heh :0

          • 103.5.1.1.2 samgetang

@ricky: that was some strong sense you got there…

@celexa: yea, he is! although i was not even trying to hide it :-)

          • 103.5.1.1.3 ricky the royal highness

When I wrote “Samgetang is a girl, I’m sure”, I had no idea that it would attract that much hype.
I thought everyone knew, really. Something ‘feminine’ about the way your write probably, samgetang. Or maybe my Man Radar was activated. Is there such a thing?! lol

          • 103.5.1.1.4 samgetang

@ Ricky: man-radar, hahaha! uh-oh! we all better watch out for that ;-)

    • 103.6 Viola

Before I reveal my age I need to make a note to self: Invest in an anti-aging skin care regime! :P

      And drum roll……………………..Dun Dun dun

I am a taurus, 23 years old, and I like long walks on the beach! :P

(Sorry about the last part, I just couldn’t resist! Darn irreverence!) :P

      • 103.6.1 Minnetter

        hello friend^^
yay for now we are the same age then! hahaha, but I guess I am older than you since I’m a Leo and I’ll be 24 this year :)

      • 103.6.2 ricky the royal highness

        >.<

        *gasps*

I am [whispers age so no one can hear] and I am a taurus, and I hate the sun!

        • 103.6.2.1 Viola

Ricky, the part about “I like long walks on the beach” was a joke. It’s a very cheesy pick up line.
Frankly, I detest the sun too, my dad calls me an owl. :P I take my sun exposure very seriously, a few OT’s ago I made a detailed post about the best sunscreens and hats to combat the deadly rays! :P

          Nightowls of the world, unite!

          • 103.6.2.1.1 ahjummabunny

I don’t know if I thanked you properly for that. I’m just a little less spotted thanks to your recommendations.

          • 103.6.2.1.2 ricky the royal highness

            Lol, so we’re nightowls now?

I get the cheesy joke, don’t worry. And my dad calls me a candle. I seemed to ‘melt’ under the sun, according to him. Pfft! Ridiculous. I just lack the adequate melanin to combat the sun’s rays, is how I’d phrase my excuse.
Imagine the teasing I endured from the other teen boys for being ‘fair’. It’s not my fault I preferred books, and I had access to indoor playthings.

Hmm I should gain knowledge by reading about your anti-sun post. Which OT was it?

          • 103.6.2.1.3 Viola

You know Ricky, I think you can turn your sun aversion into an advantage. You don’t even need to say anything explicitly, just throw on some glitter and let a stray sunbeam sparkle off it. As popular as Twilight is, it won’t take long for people to draw the right (wrong) conclusion. And voila! You will be inundated with girls trying to save you from a tormented existence, spent brooding in the dark, abyss of the night.

See, the brooding is one of the most important part. The glitter won’t have it’s proper effect if you don’t put in the requisite amount of brooding. If you are slightly deficient in this area, don’t worry. Just practice making this face in the mirror
            http://www.claudiaciuta.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Antonio-Banderas.jpg

When it comes to brooding, Edward Cullen has nothing on Armand!

(This slightly (ha!) deranged monologue was brought about because, my dad just promoted me from an owl He said I will turn into a bat and fly away if one spot of sun hits me! -_-)

          • 103.6.2.1.4 Viola

            @ Ricky

This is the umbrella I use. Works well in the rain, and also pretty enough to use as a sunshade. But..I am guessing you won’t be using it! :P But if you do, PROMISE me you will take a picture and show me!

Favorite suncreen: It’s a mineral sunscreen, and all natural. Unlike the chemical ones, it doesn’t start breaking down as soon as light hits it. Added bonus, it doesn’t break out my skin either! :)

Favorite after sun lotion: Very refreshing, and has this very light unisex scent. http://www.amazon.com/Burts-Bees-Soother-Linden-Flower/dp/B001N2SYHA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1308594848&sr=1-2-catcorr

And last but not least, my Hat! I love it more than the Witches lovetheir pointy hats! I almost cried when I lost it last week, but thanks to Amazon’s fast shipping, I have another one! :) It’s upf 50+!

          • 103.6.2.1.5 ricky the royal highness

Alas, brooding does not suit me. I’m a very smiley person :)
Worth noting however, that I nearly had a cardiac arrest from viewing ‘pasty’ looking Banderas. Haha

But I’m keeping your idea for future references.
And thanks for all the wonderful products. I like the hat!

      • 103.6.3 MJP

        I’m ol’nough t’be all yutes Ma!

(Yes, that is some serious slang above.)

        yutes = you youths

        • 103.6.3.1 ricky the royal highness

          Hehe :)

You can’t be THAT old, MJP! You sounds sooo vibrantly youthful. Maternal, yes. But definitely vibrant! :D

          • 103.6.3.1.1 Viola

I know how old you are MJP and you are NOT old! :) You are positively a spring chicken! :P

      • 103.6.4 samgetang

Viola!!!! You are 23! That is most cool! ;-)

Which goes to show how age cannot be as easily detected from one’s way with words…esp the written word!

So it looks like you should call me noona… or is it ahjumma? hahaha!

Ricky-ssi, we are so way off the mark. :-(

        • 103.6.4.1 ricky the royal highness

I know! I kicked my own buttocks because she told us her age a few OTs before – hence, I should have known!

          Noona…Ahjumma… which is it? Haha

I have a question for you, samgetang.
Based on what I’ve written on the OT, how old do you think I am?

            Ricky is 25.

          • 103.6.4.1.2 Celexa

            I want to guess…

At first I thought RHR was 18… then I found out he was a teacher that could carry the low cut jeans LMH look so I adjusted my guess to 22 (barely out of college- first teaching job).

And now… well he say’s he’s older than Viola! I’m so confused!! :/

guess out of left field 24!

          • 103.6.4.1.3 Viola

            I think you are 23 to 27.
Er..Ricky, you said your were a taurus too, but you weren’t born on the 23rd of April, right? Right?! I am having some rather lurid visions of terrible birth secrets. No! This isn’t a melodrama! No birth secrets!

          • 103.6.4.1.4 Viola

            @ hrh
I bet the Speedo of Power kicked you back. :p

          • 103.6.4.1.5 ricky the royal highness

            Celexa is RIGHT!
            I am 22. Congrats, Celexa!

Why did you think that I’m 18 before? I’m curious!

          • 103.6.4.1.6 samgetang

@Ricky: Are you the same age as Viola? :-)

          • 103.6.4.1.7 ricky the royal highness

When you were born, were you wearing a crown too?
I AM born on the 23rd of April! *gasps*

            We are soooo makjang!!!

            *disbelief and amazement*

        • 103.6.4.2 samgetang

@ Ricky: Oooopppss…read yr question before I realized you already answered it ;-)

And congrats to Celexa…you are wise! (Ricky, what does she get for her powers of deduction/induction/guesstimation?)

          • 103.6.4.2.1 ricky the royal highness

            LOL

I wasn’t aware that prizes were involved, samgetang!
Hmm I guess I can spare a bottle of Vitamin Water, with an autograph from my dad :)

          • 103.6.4.2.2 Viola

Ricky….are you serious about being born on April 23rd?! For real?! 0_o ‘Cause that would just be insane! Or are you just joking? :)

Alas, I wasn’t born with a crown, not even a measly silver spoon! :p

      • 103.6.5 tinpra

And here I thought this day would never happen! (Weren’t we waiting for 1,350 posts?)

I was a little off in my guesstimation of your age, but not by much. Whee! So how does it feel now that you’ve done the big reveal?

Ok, I’m saddened that Amg1 has decided to leave this blog. His is the handle I look for and enjoy reading his views/thoughts. :(

    Please reconsider your decision.

Not that the environment will change necessarily, but adding your presence will make a difference here.

    • 104.1 ck1Oz

Sigh.I finally had time to read the blog.

I am upset too.I understand where he is coming from though. There has been a definate trend of multiple and endless comments of the same vein i.e. certain parts of a celebrities anatomy.

I have tried to tolerate some stuff but we have to admit there has been outright hateful thoughts expressed here on DB.I mean it’s only a drama and not real life. However different individuals seem to take huge personal offence if everyone doesn’t share the same taste in certain drama trends/plot.

I mean people are individuals. There are bound to be difference in opinions however respect to fellow viewers or bloggers seem to have be thrown to the wind.I am afraid to write anything most of the time now in case I get bashed.Respect there is no respect nowadays.I really do not understand how viewers can bash bloggers here and elsewhere if they chose to write a certain view.Even if the article is unbiased the viewers chose to interpret it as a biased article. It’s enough to make one throw their hands up and say…I don’t need this.It is only a drama.I can just watch it and discuss it in real life with friends instead of expecting an ambush around every corner.

I think amg1 is wise to leave why stay if the environment is not condusive to discussions, friendship and shared love for a drama/actors.

I just restrict my comments to thank you for the recaps and articles these days.

    • 104.2 samgetang

I second that, mskololia. And I’ve said as much in the thread where he said his farewells. Hope he gets to read this…

      • 104.2.1 janna

Was this in some LtM thread??? (I’m unsure of what happened) Man, that show collected all the crazies. I kind of avoid recap threads even though they take the most time to write (which I’m very appreciative of).

Okay in a reply to myself, I just realized it was in.this.thread. On the first page. ….

I wrote a long post then I just deleted it all. I think what he wrote really makes me feel bad to write anything here anymore so I guess I’m going to avoid commenting for now….

In the interest of reaching our targeted comments, here are some questions: Do you guys believe in True Love/ Soulmate? And if you do, what qualities would he/she possess?
    GO crazy people!! :)

    • 107.1 janna

You really want to tell your age? I avoid that question like no other.

      Okay, I’ll bite.

I believe in Love, but not like.. there’s only one person the world for you type of Love. There’s just too many people. So… does that count as a “no”? Can I still answer the second question? I’m going to go for it anyways.

Good qualities in a guy: He’d give up his seat for someone, he knows what it’s like to work hard for something, he likes where he is right now but always has goals for something better, and he’s willing to try new things. That’s about it. Also he’s Eric. OF COURSE I’D WRITE THAT.

    • 107.2 Jonesy

I agree with Janna’s response. I think 500 Days of Summer did the best job of laying out what love is.

      ****SPOILER*****
The movie argues that you don’t just have “the one”–you have the one for right now. Because you will change; they will change. And no one can give the sense that things won’t be different. So a soul mate may be my soul mate for now but maybe, a year from now, we’ve changed and we aren’t soul mates anymore.

      ******** END SPOILER**************

And I suppose that rules out the 2nd question but I would like to posit that all boys must have a sense of humor. Funny is good.

    • 107.3 tinpra

I dunno if I believe in a true love or soulmate anymore. lol. Or maybe I do: I believe that if you are meant to be with someone then God has put that someone in your path, or He will. I believe that you can mistake lust or intense fellow-feeling or a right-now kind of compatibility for that person and end up in a relationship that doesn’t have the strength to stick it out to the end.

Of course so many people treat romantic relationships like a fairytale before the Happily Ever After (i.e., tough road to get to the lovin’, slay the dragon, get the girl/boy, it’s all good from here on) that they don’t know how to stick it out to the end in a relationship that really could work. We’re not always happy with our friends. You have to make time for them, accommodate different personalities and habits, and work on communication….why should a romantic relationship be any different?

On the other hand, people also sometimes mistake depth of feeling in a platonic friendship for romantic interest. I think in our sex-driven society (in the US at least) it makes it difficult for people to not presume that intensity, closeness and connection always equals romance. You can, and should, have intimate friendships with people that have absolutely nothing to do with getting them in the sack. And so if you jump the gun there you probably end up in a romantic relationship that is unfortunately doomed to failure (b/c that wasn’t where it was meant to go), and lose out on what should have been a very close, very personal friend.

But what do I know? I’m not seeing anyone and haven’t been in a relationship in ages :s

As for me! I want to marry a Samwise Gamgee :D No, not some guy who is actually shorter than me (difficult) and has hairy feet (aaaaaaaaaah!), but someone who is loyal in hard times, who stands up for me when I’m too stupid to see what a mess I’m walking into, who is willing to share my burdens, and when he can’t share them will carry me as best he can. Still adorable when grimy is certainly a plus :) I’m not asking for much, am I? I’d hope to be the same for my Sam, where e’er he may be.

    • 107.4 Celexa

I am going to sound pessimistic here… but I believe in true LUST…

True love well that is the end product of societal restrictions on human nature.

    • 107.5 MJP

      Viola,

Why don’t you ask this question on the next OT? I would love to see some of the answers.

    • 107.6 ahjummabunny

I believe in soul-mates but not necessarily as a romantic counterpart. I have probably mentioned it but the sonnet Let me not to the marriage of true minds ( billy the shake) spells out quite what a soul-mate is. when I read it I went around trying to make soul-mates. I wanted three I think I was successful. I had forgotten why I was so picky about friends. About love I think it is impossible for anyone to love truly and be in a romantic relationship. I read once that love is always about correcting the wrongs of love. I love like that always trying to be better than I was when I loved before.

  8. 108 angel

    hi, hope you are good.
I am watching right now city hunter episode 8 i really like it. Before I was just reading recaps and enjoy them but after watching one episode i can’t do it anymore. I have to watch it, just one problem the internet is so slow that it almost giving me heart attack. lol

    • 108.1 ahjummabunny

aww I know the feeling of the blasted internet hampering your show watching. You have to pause and wait for the video to load while going crazy waiting for 1 sentence to finsh. grrr

  9. 109 Jonesy

    2 random things:

    1) Got an email from Dramafever saying that Birdie Buddy will be aired on TVn.

    2) Trader Joe’s sells bibimbap as a microwavable lunch. Yeah I bought it. :)

    • 109.1 janna

They what now? Microwavable lunch. Hmmm. Sans egg I suppose? I’m excited, but I’d probably not enjoy it. What are the ingredients? Do you get a sauce packet? Detailllllsssss

      • 109.1.1 Jonesy

You get a rice bowl, seasoned beef ,spinach, soybean sprouts, carrots, and yes, egg except it looks like it was fried and cut up. Plus it comes with a spicy chili sauce.

        • 109.1.1.1 janna

microwaveable egg slices ;_; I guess if you could ice-pick it out (or if it was separate) you could toss that and put real egg in. I put mushrooms in bibimbap, but I hatehatehate frozen mushrooms. Also zucchini, but that could get overcooked.

I usually buy pre-made Indian food from Trader Joe’s because I’m convinced it’s probably cheaper then trying to acquire the spices. …..And I’m just super lazy. I will probably give this one try, but I never fancied their bool kogi.. you gotta burn that meat forever to get the fat off.

          • 109.1.1.1.1 ahjummabunny

just trim the meat or buy a substitute cut.

    • 109.2 Celexa

I found spicy noodle bowls at Sam’s today… it had korean writing on it!
I’m single… and yes.. i bought the whole frigging case!!

It’s Fool by Postmen (credits : YT uploader)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97CwaFM40nE

  11. 111 MJP

    Hello again, Everyone!

Thanks for the many replies on the previous comments.

    Starting from scratch here:

So, I watched Can You Hear My Heart today RAW since subs take a week (however, let’s avoid the subs speed of posting debate, please).

I am trying to figure out if Jang Joon Ha / Bong Ma Roo is really mad at Cha Dong Joo or if he is faking it to get close to the biological father whom he hates.

I know his character has always been a bit negative, but did he really go off the deep end in anger against someone whom he loved like a brother?

I need to catch up on subs with Ep’s 21, 22, & 23. So… anyone have any opinions?

    • 111.1 Kristal

I think he isn’t so much angry at Dong-joo as he is so angry at Dong-joo’s mother that he is going to use Dong-joo as one means of getting revenge against his mother.

I question whether he is just pretending towards his father right now though just to get a secret revenge against him. I doubt he has really decided to forgive him and be so buddy-buddy. Seems this is also a means for him to get revenge against the mother by taking the company from Dong-joo.

Poor Dong-joo. He is completely innocent and Ma-roo is being such a bastard to him! SIGH

      • 111.1.1 MJP

        Agreed. SIGH

  12. 112 balletbabe

    @ Amg1

I completely agree with your statement about what the OT has become, I don’t even bother reading most of the comments or even commenting because I feel as if I’m in a chat-room. Or perhaps your comment “personal blog” is a much better word choice!

I started visiting this blog back in 2007 when my beloved CP was airing and LOVED reading the recaps. Over the years I looked forward to the reading recaps and the OT but now I find myself visiting this blog less and less ”/

    • 112.1 Viola

      Hello Balletbabe,
I am slightly confused about the description “personal blog” that Amg1 has used to describe the OT. I am assuming he meant the Friday OT’s? Since Amg1 has stated that he won’t reply anymore, I have no one else to ask for clarification. Since you seem to identify strongly with this term, will you, or anyone else who feels the same, please provide some clarification?

I have my hypothesis, but I really am quite curious to see what others opinion might be.Thank you in advance, to anyone who chooses to reply. :)

      • 112.1.1 ricky the royal highness

Just offering some of my thoughts~

I found this blog just a few months back and the OT juuuuust three/four weeks ago. So in my mind this blog is IT!

I never saw any changes in the “content” of the comments posted, but that’s merely because I have no past experiences in the OT to compare it with. So when Amg1 wrote what he wrote, it came as a surprised to me.

In my humblest opinion, all those abs-worshiping activities are fun to read. They’re witty, funny and definitely a welcome change in my sometimes depressing days.
They serve like a good yummy dessert after a heavy meal. You don’t have to eat them, but you’ll feel better after having them! In a sense, those “Ooohh… so-and-so is hot!”are just like desserts! Ignore them if you’d like to, but a tiny spoonful would make you feel sated. Ya feel me?

Of course, I deserve a smidgen of the blame myself. With all the Yoo In Na worshiping that I’ve been doing, I mean. Oo La La… Da’ Hawtness! (Shoot! There – I did it again. Sorry)

I respest everyone’s opinion. I take into account what others have to say, even though it might be as “empty” as “Ooohh… so-and-so is hot” and I keep an open mind when I read all the comments in DB.

Having said that, I do have my limits. I absolutely agree with what Amg1 said about the bad-mouthing here. I try to be neutral but a guy can only take so much. So I stopped reading the Lie To Me OT, only taking a peek once in awhile to read the weecaps and read the full recaps elsewhere.

The only thing I disagree with Amg1 is his opinion about him being a “guy” here. This is entirely my opinion, but it is as though he’s implying that being a “guy” here in DB is a bad thing. Well, I AM a living, breathing human male with the chromosome XY, but all I’ve received are good welcomes, hugs and lots of positive responses. Appreciate the love, girls!

As for the “personal blog” question, Viola. I reckon he meant all the personal criticism (which shouldn’t be made public) that we see here.

Phew, this is a long one!

        • 112.1.1.1 samgetang

          Hi guys n gals,

I am also not too sure what Amg meant about the “personal blog” thing.

He is the only one who can clarify that, I guess.

I’ve been popping in and out of OT since I discovered it last year only so I wouldn’t know what Amg refers to in terms of his other concerns here which made him decide to sign-off permanently.

Sad because his contributions here add spice and brilliance to the discussion and give an enlightening male perspective in many cases. Perhaps it is not the undue increase in amount of abs-worshipping that gets to him but the lack of response that he gets for his own more cerebral contributions? I cant remember if it was in the BL recap thread or in the previous OT where he posted this long story which garnered not even one comment. I read that one but unfortunately did not have the chance to comment. I hope he gets to read this so he’ll know that people may not be able to comment but not one gets posted without being read by at least someone whose life may be changed by that writing. And that someone sure matter a lot even if he/she is just one.

Anyway, he entitled his farewell post as Quality vs Quantity so that means he is disappointed with the sheer increase in volume of the comments which do not necessarily equate with an increase in the quality of the comments.

I enjoy the banter and quirky funny exchange of wit here as much as the in-depth discussion and philosophical or socio-anthropological dissertations. But I would not hold it against anyone if they love to share silly thoughts sometimes or even many times because I know many of those who do that here I’ve also seen to share insight, wisdom and more…and even if they did not I would not judge people on that level because people are worthy of respect regardless of differing tastes or intellectual pursuits.

As to Ockoala, I did not read the post that was targeted against her. But if anyone did, Im sure that person must have no idea that she used to be one of the pioneers here or maybe she/he is a newbie here in DB so their comment would not really matter. If I have read that I would have tried to set the record straight knowing how much I enjoy Ms Ockoala’s blogsite when Im not here at DB. But alas, I was not aware of it, and maybe many of us here as well especially those who have been with DB for the longest time.

In the final analysis, it is always sad to see anyone go and with such a reason for doing so but we cant do anything but respect his reasons/decisions and hope in the future either he changes his mind or the circumstances change for the better/best.

Phew, this also a long one! Sorry…

        • 112.1.1.2 Angel

agree with all what ricky the royal highness said. Just respect what others had to say and if you don’t like it move to another one we don’t have to critisize the others. I really like this forum because it brings us together, we are from different countries with different languages and different religions and we meet here to discuss what we have in common ” addict to korean drama”

      • 112.1.2 ahjummabunny

I am a person who is not afraid of being stoned nor calling people in glass houses people in glass house.
Amg1 is the only person that posts on ot that I think thinks of ot as his own personal blog.

        • 112.1.2.1 MJP

          Dearest Bunny,

I hope you don’t mind me calling you that, since Ricky TRH gets to call you that.

I thought what I was reading today so apt for this topic.

          J.I. Packer wrote
          “Inescapable Divisions”

          Quote:
“Sometimes division, though not desirable, is inescapable–the best thing the situation admits of. Still it is always a sad thing when the situation arises which makes it the best thing to do.”

          • 112.1.2.1.1 samgetang

MJP, you say it well and good! Thanks for the wise words from J.I. Packer.

Some things including separation/division must occur for growth to happen. Either in the one leaving or in the one remaining or both.

          • 112.1.2.1.2 ahjummabunny

Of course you can call me bunny! I’m surprised more people don’t call me bunny.
I always think of this when the inevitable k-drama thing happens:

“If there is an angel who records the sorrows of men as well as their sins, he knows how many and deep are the sorrows that spring from false ideas . . .” George Eliot

          • 112.1.2.1.3 MJP

            Bunny,

Oh, your George Eliot comment (false ideas) reminds me so much of another quote:

“The longer I love, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company…a church….a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude…I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you…we are in charge of our attitudes.”
            — Charles R. Swindoll

Does Anyone know where I can find the picture of Dok Ko Jin on the Vitamin Water?! I wanted to a project for my sister’s birthday gift! She absolutely loves this drama and it would be awesome to get Dok Ko Jin on her vitamin water as a way to “recharge” her!

    • 113.1 Celexa

I suggest you download a picture of DJ print it onto several larger address labels, cut out the background and stick DJ on the vitamin bottle water. that’s probably what the props department did.

      • 113.1.1 dneyang

I just can’t find the same picture..it makes me sad that I can’t replicate it exactly, but as long it’s DKJ I’m sure she’ll love it.

Now the only question left is…goatee or no?
        It’s a toughie….

    • 113.2 Kristal

Can you make me one too? Hehe.
What a great gift idea. I would love it if someone took the time to do that for me. :)

      • 113.2.1 dneyang

It hit me yesterday when I was trying to figure out what to get her since I can’t buy her a drink. It’s her 21st birthday, so the only drinks I am allowed to buy her has to be super special!

I’m going to try and make it so the picture can always be snapped on and off the bottle label. That way she can recycle the bottle and keep the picture for future vitamin water bottles!

I don’t know if I can mail you a bottle, but maybe the clip on DKJ?

        Let me know via den_ishe@hotmail.com!

        • 113.2.1.1 MJP

      Can I adopt you?

I want you to be MY sister, so you can give me Kdrama paraphernalia on every birthdays. :)

Speaking of vitamin water….here is a sneak peek at one of the prop Jomo made for an upcoming episode of Yobosayseo! She is incredibly creative. :)

Oh hi random note but nowhere else to write. So it just reinforces that personal blog thing.

However……guys guys (I mean gals but guys sounds better)….Lee Dong Wook is officially out of the army right 20th June? That is only 3 hours away.Hehe…shallow comment.

I only remembered because I was just told today his drama is pushed back to 23rd July.

So whew it is after CYHMH ends.Yay…..sorry happy about little breaks.I intend to marathon through BFB then before Scent of a woman.

I when i found out that information i was really pissed at my government for not thinking ahead and setting the US behind in the internet connectivity race.

    • 114.2 ahjummabunny

isn’t baby faced beauty airing on kbs and scent of a woman airing after city hunter?

  15. 115 Kristal

I just happened to have my TV on the National Geographic channel and interestingly enough they were talking about how 90% of Koreans have internet access and an extremely large amount of their youth is addicted to the internet and video games. Apparently, they are addicted to going to Internet cafes and even drop out of school to spend all day there. According to NG, South Korea is one of the most “connected” countries in the world if not the most connected.

    • 115.1 Kristal

Now back to my addiction, Korean dramas! ;)

    • 115.2 ahjummabunny

I’m wondering how that should factor in to dramas. the people in dramas seem to have almost no interactions with cafes. I think national geographic is over stating.

    • 115.3 beggar1015

It does seem that every character in a kdrama has a cell phone, no matter how “poor” the character claims to be. And it’s not just cheap phones, but the top of the line kind of things.

    • 115.4 samgetang

yes, Kristal with an “i” :-) the SK government has made it their dream/mission, now a reality, to have all their citizens fully connected via information highway.

when I was there for a visit years ago I saw that for myself. a visit to the Samsung headquarters further reinforced to me of their love and passion for technology.

in Europe I was amazed that most households would have Samsung TV rather than their own local brands, if they had…aside from maybe cheaper in price, the Samsung technology is more advanced in some ways which makes it a great deal indeed!

(i guess our european friends here can share more on this topic…)

im of the opinion that the Hallyu Wave in terms of culture and entertainment is also driving the economics behind their brands’ penetration in other countries.

as to ahjummabunny’s,question on how this factors with their kdrama worlds, i guess they are so entrenched with such technology that it is already a given and not already a matter of issue for them so there is no conscious effort to depict their high connectivity.

@beggar1015: for such a highly-technological and inter-connected country as SK, you would already expect that sophisticated mobile technology comes as a matter of course to them. even in our country, almost all people across different social and educational levels have cellphones already even though we are not yet what one would consider as first world so what more from SK? ;-) i dont know about the top of the line thing, maybe SK people here can shed light on this? perhaps there are subscription schemes there which makes this possible?

Happy Father’s Day to those who are fathers!

    *Crickets chirping*

Well then I want to wish all our handsome, talented Korean drama actors who are fathers a most Happy Father’s day today!

Cha Seung Won 1 son & 1 daughter
    Kwon Sang Woo 1 son
Lee Soon Jae (Grandpa from My Princess) 2 sons

Sorry, I don’t know of anyone else.

    • 116.1 Minnetter

      same here! Happy Father’s Day to OTer’s hubbies^^ …

      on a personal note:

This day makes me miss my Daddy… I live too far away from him :( and he’s too much of a workaholic so when I called, he wasn’t home! really he’s too much >_< but we love him anyways, hahaha.

    • 116.2 tinpra

I third this very belated Happy Fathers Day to our the hubbies of our OTers, any of the boys on the OT who may be dads (I can only think of Samsooki) and our delightful k-drama actors!

    • 116.3 ricky the royal highness

I gave my dad a mug with “Dad’s Choice Is The Best Choice” written on it.

It’s kinda cheesy (the other choice was Dads: Man’s Best Friends! – YUCK!) but he likes to drink coffee, so I figured that the mug would be appropriate.

I was trying to find a mug that says “Thanks For Not Forcing Me To Play Sports So I Can Watch Dramas” but they don’t sell those :)

      Happy Belated Fathers Day!

      • 116.3.1 MJP

        LOL!!!

They had this mug at Cracker Barrel (a restuarant) and it was HUGE! Like the size of a vase. There were two mugs with funny sayings.

I have to get back to work. I am trying to upload that vitamin water picture into flickr and my pic’s are too big. Shrink, shrink, shrinking I must do!!!!!

        • 116.3.1.1 ricky the royal highness

I saw above that you helped dneyang with her problem. What a Good Samaritan you are, MJP! Love you for it!

Every year gifts evolve and get more interesting. This year it’s a mug the size of a vase. Who knows what will happen next year?

          • 116.3.1.1.1 tinpra

Mug the size of a thimble?

      • 116.3.2 samgetang

“I was trying to find a mug that says “Thanks For Not Forcing Me To Play Sports So I Can Watch Dramas” but they don’t sell those”

Hahahaha! If you find one, Ricky-ssi your highness, please get me the one for the female version, too.

        • 116.3.2.1 ricky the royal highness

          No problemo, samgetang!

If I find one that says “Thanks For Not Forcing Me To Take Ballet Lessons So I Can Watch Dramas” I’ll direct you to the store :)

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to all fathers everywhere, especially those who participate or are mentioned here at OT.

For those interested to see images of CSW as dad and hubby, go to:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3gZvXpOcco

      Enjoy!

      • 116.4.1 MJP

Those are some adorable pictures of his family. They sure style that little girl up something fierce. The boy seems dressed very casually in comparison.

      • 116.4.2 samgetang

        cute! thanks, drama bliss!

i watched “71:Into the Fire” a SK vs NK war film set in the ’50s which starred CSW, Kwon Sang Woo and TOP in his first film debut.

CSW is as badass and kickass as can be. KSW is amazing as always. But TOP is a revelation…he played the role well and with sensitivity for someone who’s new to this.

the film is based on true to life events and is awesomely inspiring and amazing as well in its technical aspects. A MUST SEE! Highly recommended!

To those who love Can You Hear My Heart and can’t wait for the subs!

    http://blogs.fanbox.com/CanyouhearmyheartEpisodesbelow

This is a link to very rough recaps, but it covers the information in English!

Thanks to Sam167 over at Dramacrazy for the information.

    • 117.1 ahjummabunny

I just saw a little bit of an episode of can you hear my heart. I wish I knew which episode it was so I can catch up, but mbc on tv just shows the episodes in a strange way two, back to back for two hours without regard for the actual episode run time.

  18. 118 MJP

Grandpa’s latest movie is now available with English subs.

Lee Soon Jae!!!! We Love You!!!!!!!

  19. 119 ahjummabunny

I’m just watching the first episode of my love by my side I LOVE It!

    • 119.1 MJP

      ahjummabunny,

What is it that you like about it? From what I remeber when I watched Ep 1 RAW, I didn’t find anything that attracted me. Maybe I need to read what they are saying?

      • 119.1.1 ahjummabunny

nah, I don’t think your opinion would change after knowing their conversation. It’s just that I like the set up. the rich aunt of the guy who got her pregnant has a son she doesn’t know she has, who bumped into the pregnant girl and tutors her niece. I see it unfurling as long lost son reunites with his mother and becomes the love interest for the mi sol and the two cousins as rivals. I’ve seen two other dramas by this writer and I like them, she always chooses uncommon subject matter and I think as the series continues there will be a great love story or two.

        • 119.1.1.1 MJP

Honestly, I wasn’t too thrilled with the storyline. Sometimes, I imagine in my teeny tiny little bitty brain that I disagree with where the writer is headed. Go figure!!!

I wonder if all Kdrama addicts get this way, starting to disagree/argue internally with the way the writer is taking the storyline of the drama?

I would like to think I am not alone… In my little Kdrama argumentative brain… :-)

          • 119.1.1.1.1 ahjummabunny

I’ve been there. I think we all have. they say boxing is an unnatural sport you walk into the pain instead of away from it. watching dramas is a little like boxing sometimes, but sometimes we regain our senses and just for a little while we think that it is impossible for people to live like that.

  20. 120 beggar1015

On topic: The last two episodes of City Hunter were awesome. Can’t wait till next week.

Off topic: Yah! Hulu has put Black Butler back up. I’d better marathon to the end before they change their mind.

    • 120.1 MJP

*Goes to Hulu to research what Black Butler is*

Hmm, not my cup of tea, anime.

Imagine, everytime you open your browser a box w/JB and GF latest updates in a handy dandy clickable form!
