Birdie Buddy to air Monday-Tuesdays on tvN

Birdie Buddy is finally going on the air. Again. After being pulled. Again. Let’s hope it sticks this time.

It’ll be taking up the Monday-Tuesday slot on cable channel tvN, which makes it tvN’s third foray into prime-time programming (following Manny and the currently airing romantic comedy, I Need Romance). It had been announced previously that tvN would pick it up, but then was dropped — and is now back.

The interesting thing is that the drama was produced (100% pre-broadcast) as a 20-episode drama, but the cable switch means that the timeslot is shorter. So the episodes will be re-edited into 24 shorter episodes, down from 70 minutes to 45 minutes each. I’m a fan of shorter episodes in general, but not necessarily time-dictated re-edits — because the drama was written and produced with a certain rhythm in mind. They’re meant to end at a certain narrative point, and unless you’re very, very clever (24 times over), you’ll lose the careful build-up built into the storytelling.

And we know that mere minutes can make a huge difference as to whether a cliffhanger is effective or not — just take a look at City Hunter, which went from spoiling its own tense climaxes to driving us mad with anxiety for the next episode. Or Miss Ripley, where the editors seem not to understand the point of cliffhangers at all and seemingly just cut out in the middle of a random scene. (Seriously, what’s up with that, Ripley?)

Brief history of the much-troubled Group Eight golf trendy: Birdie Buddy initially cast Seo Ji-hye, who dropped out, and Lee Mi-sook, who dropped out. UEE was brought in, the drama was intended to air last summer, which didn’t happen, and then supposedly scheduled for March of this year, which didn’t happen. After being shelved for nearly a year, it’ll finally get to see the light of day. The funny thing is, the drama actually looks pretty decent; you can see the extended 20-minute trailer on Dramafever.

Meanwhile, UEE has already been cast in her next drama, the KBS weekend series Ojakgyo Brothers (formerly Golden Pond), which is slated for an August 6 premiere. That means she’ll be celebrating the end of her “drama curse” by pulling double-duty, with two dramas airing at the same time, although not on the same day — she’ll be on TV four days of the week, from Saturday through Tuesday.

Birdie Buddy’s premiere is set for August 15.

I'm so happy for this show. It kinds reminded me of that last kid in Games period, (or Gym Class, depending on your corner of the world) the dorky one who goes ahead to be the President of some big-ass company when he's older, but still always gets picked last for volleyball.

Hope Birdie Buddy has its own hedge fund when its all grown up... we know the bankers will all come flocking, they already have golf! :P

I'm terribly sorry about the randomness of this comment. I'm sleepy. Words are a blur to me!

Must. Finish. Wordlist. Stupid. GRE.

Where is Ricky TRH with his cymbals of sleeplessness when you need him?!

I love how you worded it. Although I have no idea what to expect from Birdie Buddy, I do have a soft spot for underdogs (and nerds), so I'll be sure to check this out when it airs. I don't know how I feel about the 24 episodes (formerly 20 episodes), but we'll see how it goes.

P.S. Good luck on your studying for the GRE.

UEE and her unstoppable popularity. Lets just hope this series is better than it looks in the preview. I like UEE but i think it'll just take a glimpse of one episode and be off. The premise looks boring. hahah

Lol, UEE airing 4 days a week. Imagine the hilariousness if UEE had to compete... against herself on the same day in the same timeslot. UEE fans would just facepalm.

Though with this setup UEE's fans have got their work cut out for them to follow her 4 out of every 7 days.

I find myself also hoping it'll do well. Wouldn't want anyone to think 'Oh, it should've stayed shelved'. -_-

There is doubt that What's Up will be aired since one of it's stars commited vehicular homicide.

I agree, but wish you worded that differently. In the end the motorcyclist was drunk and fell off his bike, noone will know whether he had injuries serious enough just from the fall to result in death even in the event Daesung didn't run him over since the accidents were only minutes apart. Who knows, maybe if Daesung didn't run him over he would of died in the ambulance to the hospital from his motorcycle fall injuries, noone will ever know. It was an accident in the end, but the fact that he did run him over and the guy died, the blame will be on him. Calling it vehicular homicide is a bit harsh and if anything it was vehicular manslaughter not homicide, since homicide insinuates he purposely killed the guy.

Also the motorcyclist was driving with a BAC of .186 so I can't really feel bad for him (fyi DUI in CA is BAC of 0.08 to give you an idea of how drunk the guy was).

As for Birdie Buddy, I am glad to see it being aired because a lot of effort was put into it and I would feel sad for the staff if it never aired. Who knows it may be a good drama.

As for What's Up , I highly doubt it will air anytime soon but I do hope it airs eventually because it looks like it was a well made drama and who doesn't like a little "fame" in their life.

20 MINUTE trailer?! 0__0

And, "What's Up", I'm looking at you...finally a grain of hope after Poseidon lol.

Lastly, UEE? Guys, I dont get it. Someone explain her and her "honey-ness", and her popularity. She seems sweet enough but the shot to fame? ....

I was not gonna watch it initially, but all these problems made me feel supportful for the drama. So going to follow each episode even if it is bad :D

It's really a curse. I mean, UEE as an actress is a newbie, but she wasn't oh so bad in You're Beautiful. I enjoy hating her, which I think was what she was supposed to do. Now it's going to be fun watching her in two different periods. With a bit of luck, we might even see the improvement while comparing both dramas :P
