Choi Ji-woo, the actress whose face practically defines Hallyu (along with, oh, Lee Young-ae and Bae Yong-joon and a handful of others), has announced her next drama. (Well, again. She’d announced a different drama comeback earlier this year.)
It’ll be an MBC series to air later this summer, titled (for now) Can’t Lose. She stars as one-half of a lawyer couple in the midst of divorce (what is it with drama divorcées these days? They’re the new careerwoman, who were the new Candys, who were the new Cinderellas), with events unfolding with a “warm, light touch.”
Choi’s Eun-jae character is a skilled, tough lawyer, described by Choi as “charming and lovable.” Now the question is: Who plays hubby dearest? Reports hint that there’s another popular Hallyu star being courted to play the male lead, who’s in the latter stages of the casting process. If he’s on a similar level (and age range) as Choi, that leaves a pretty finite list of possibilities, although it seems that every day another actor gets to stretch the term and call himself a budding Hallyu star. Hmm… Song Seung-heon? Jung Woo-sung? Kwon Sang-woo?
The drama will follow current Wednesday-Thursday series You’ve Fallen For Me, and premieres in August.

the new drama should focuses more on the relationship, and inner feelings and emotions, rather than trying to portray her competencies as a lawyer. Frankly, her role as the CEO of the airport administration in Air City was a failure.

Kang-ahhhhhh!!!!! Who else but Kang-ah can wrench your heart and make you weep with just a mere flicker of those anguished eyes? Hand towel would have to deliver a lengthy tirade of words mingled with explosive angst and fury to convey the same emotion.

Yes, yes…i know what all of you are going to say, but Stairway was one of my first kdramas. I think it may have been my first heavy kdrama so it will always have a soft spot in my heart

I’m happy she’s coming back to the small screen. It’s really not going to make much difference with whoever gets cast opposite her – her mere presence in a scene tends to overshadow whoever else is there. It just better be a male actor with a strong sense of screen survival.
On a silly note, now that I’ve been made aware (thanks JB!) of her drippy left-eye leakage, I’m SURE that I’ll be fixated on this for every scene calling for “weepage”!
Actually, I’ll just consider it CJW payback for the dead spots she left in my tear ducts with all the sobbing I did for her while agonizing through Stairway to Heaven.
The premise of this drama sounds quite similar to that of a 2008 TBS jdorama Sasaki Fusai no Jingi Naki Tatakai
(佐々木夫妻の仁義なき戦い) with Koyuki and Inagaki

I kinda agree with you on that one too.. and that drama was hilarious.. two lawyers married and having it out with each other..
but then again, lots of dramas now sound similar to each other, since there are so many remakes and ideas/manga adaptations being passed around between Taiwan, Korea and Japan (and China too, who ends up remaking the dramas after the first three countries mentioned)

I actually really enjoyed that drama. So I hope whoever they pair up with CJW, they can all go all out and make this a really bickering battle. The more bickering the more I love it. I’m odd like that.

Very much so. Ahn Jae Wook is one of the original Hallyu Kings, and he was arguably the top Hallyu actor in the Mainland. The pairing would be great.

CJW usually has great chemistry with her co-stars. But it would be nice to see her paired up with Kwon Sang-woo again, they had pretty good romcom chemistry in the handful of happy scenes of Stairway to Heaven that didn’t involve wailing and gnashing of teeth and dying.
Song Seung-hun would probably do the Kim Soo-hyun drama instead of another romcom so soon after My Princess. Though it would’ve been interesting to see them together a decade after Message.

JB you should do a post about Hallyu stars. Since everyone (including myself) aren’t sure if our favorite stars are a part of the Hallyu wave. I think a post about who are considered top stars and who are reaching that point would be really interesting.
The fact that CJW is in this, another Hallyu lead will take the opposite role. I mean any Hallyu male star would want to pair up with her. No one would want to miss at least a glimpse of her in a new drama. I agree with the few who want Ahn Jae-wook.

As in 2011 Yonsama is considered one of the most expensive actors in Asia his pay check is around US$ 5 million. There are 9 other korean actors with more than US $ 10 million pay check but the names aren’t revealed.
Rain and Big Bang are in the range of 1 – 1.5 million won, Lee Min Ho is rumoured to be in the range of 800,000 won, while Lee Seung Gi and Kim Hyun Joong are rumoured to be in the range of 500,000 – 600,000 won.

It’s better to leave her alone and let her concentrate on new work again without the usual hooking with actors by the fans. Since she portrayed as a wife and about to divorce, the story won’t be sizzling with too many smooches like her previous dramas. Her some so called loyal fans are doing nothing but fantasizing themselves with any actor who co stars with her whenever there is a new drama comes by. I think she will act as a professional in more matured and confident manner and carefree style since her personal matters have settled and has no pressure on her anymore. This drama will be a good one. She can even get award if she acts with self freedom like her close friend KNJ.
i wish her leadingman in this drama would be kwon sang woo, they have this awesome chemistry since there stairway to heaven days .
I think most people here at just hoping for what they think would be a really good pairing onscreen for this drama (couple on the verge of divorce and both top notch lawyers).
I would love JWS although he is rumored to be considering another drama. I’m not sure what his chemistry would be like with CJW but he’s one of my faves. KSW- well, I liked them in SWTH although it was way too kdrama melodramatic but I watched it when it was super hot as part of the hallyu wave so I was sweeped up in it all. I guess I don’t mind them now, although I have not liked anything that KSW has been in, in the last few years. I’ll just wait and see.

LBH and CJW collaborated twice in Beautiful Days (drama) and Everyone has a Secret (movie).. and that’s not counting the CF they did for KNTO. LBH had worked with other actresses twice in other projects, too.. like Lee Young Ae, Kim Ha Neul, Lee Mi Yeon.. the late Lee Eun Joo, the late Choi Jin Shil.

My first Kdrama is also Winter Sonata and I fall in love with K drama after it, and my first crush is on Bae Yong Jun and now a big fans of him and Choi Ji Woo, I just think no actress can pull that kind of acting like her, she is such a great actress, cried a lot watching WS.. as much as I want to see them together in real life.. I can’t bear to watch BYJ pairing up with other female actress (thats why I never wanted to see his other drama or movies such as Legend and April Snow with son ye jin, hate him in that movies, LOL), but I watch dream high only to see him at first ( then I’ve got carried away with the story).
But its ok for me if CJW can be pairing up with other male actor, hahahaha.. silly right?!

Yeah, I know there is more than looks to being a star (such as being a good actor and starring in a megahit), but these 3 are also regularly looked upon as being known for their beauty/good-looks, but I just don’t see it (not saying that they are ugly or anything).
Well, I can honestly say That this is the first time that I’ve ever heard of Choi Ji Woo being described as “not particularly attractive.” On just what planet can this possibly be true and how long have they been monitering our written language in order to be able record such a dubious observation?
