I NEED MY JAE HEE FIX NOW!
LOved him in DGCH..its my most favorite and first hong sister drama…he and han chae young are one of my favorite on screen couples along with hoi-hoi couple from MGIAG
@joybells HOI-HOI couple!!! Seunggi is my fav;)
hoi-hoi!
I really liked seeing lee seung gi play a lighter role. I think my favorite is him too, even though I loved dokko jin and his “heart break” there was such an earnestness to tae oong that was very appealing. Hmm now that I think about it lee seung gi is really a very good actor.
DGCH was,is and will be my favorite! Lee Mong-Ryong, I long for you. no matter how many times i watch it, i never get bored…
Jae Hee…wen can i see you in dramas again?
*sob*
y’all have any new podcasts planned? i love your “printed” stuff, but i am a podcast addict when it comes to my commute to and from work. it would make my day to wake up and listen to some kdrama ridiculousness. keep up the great work, java and girlfriday! your understudies are doing pretty well, in their own right, but you two have the recap skills of a ninja!
I thought it’d be interesting to start a list called “Everything I Need to Know about Life, Love and In-Laws I Learned from K-Dramas.” Shiku’s comment about QSD saving her (are you a her?) from a speeding ticket reminded me.
So before I completely finish packing and am reduced to reading/commenting via blackberry, What life lessons have you learned from k-dramas, either serious or silly?
lessons i’ve learnt from kdrama..hmm i wouldn’t say lessons but its how some of my views have changed
1.i see piggyback rides as a romantic gestures, earlier i used too hate it because in my physical training class at my high skool,my PT sir used to make us carry each other on a backs n run around the football field esp during a hot sunny day and it nearly used to kill me
2.before my loved one goes out of station i refuse to go the beach with him..in kdrama they couple usually end up breaking up after goin to a beachside..haha..im superstitious
3.also i want to be gifted a necklace/pendant by my bf..haha.cheesy bt in almost every single kdrama the male lead does that..hey a girl can hope for some kdrama element in her real life
I have to admit, kdramas have sometimes made me paranoid, too! And I’m more obsessive about my shoes not going past a certain point in my apartment, even though we rarely if ever wear outdoor shoes inside anyway.
Yes I am a her
Woohoo! *hugs*
My Kdrama Moral Values:
1. Guys should have not have a bad back. For the purposes of piggyback rides and carrying children by letting them sit on your shoulders.
2. Girls should open their eyes as wide as humanly possible when they’re scared or shocked or overwhelmed. It’s apparently attractive.
3. Guys should know how to hold their liquor in the instances that your Competitior in the Love Game wants to chit-chat or your future Father-In-Law wants to judge your worth – I’m sooooo gonna fail miserably in this part
4. Never mind if you’re poor, you MUST have a Touch Screen hand phone. And your ringtone MUST be cute, heart-beat inducing, if possible. Oh you MUST copy the ringtone in a super cute adorable chipmunk voice every time it rings.
5. A six-pack or a washboard abs work wonders for guys. Flaunt it but be humble about it – it’s more charming that way. It couldn’t hurt to practice brooding while showering AND wearing a speedo in a shower either.
6. We should sort our trash. Like, obsessively.
@ricky the royal highness
haha.super like. esp points 4 and 5
Yay! I’m glad you liked it.
I haven’t officially welcomed you yet, have I?
Welcome & nice to meet you, joybells!
My palace seemed to be in festive mood because of your presence. Heh
YRH, 1, 4 and 5 for the win! But where’s #6 from? In my limited k-drama-ing I haven’t run across insane trash sorters yet.
Hello everyone! Happy Saturday/Weekend. I’m a newbie on OT and I’ve only been watching KDramas for a year. I think it was aropund this time last year that I got hook. Happy KDrama-watching anniversary to me!
What are you guys watching now? Need to watch the last 2 episodes of Babyfaced Beauty and CYHMH. Watching repeats of Lie toMe and Romance Town on telly, since I didn’t get the chance to do it during the week (hubby’s turn to watch his programmes). Now, I’m going to wrestle the remote from the kids.
Wish I knew about KDramas when I was studying, but that was a looooooonnnnnggggg time ago that the net was non-existent. Hahaha!!!
Hi Tuqas! Welcome to OT and Kdrama addict land. I’m watching Twinkle2/All That Glitters (Sparkling). I higly recommend it. But be prepared to hate the second lead female. I dislike her on first sight and hate her more with each episode.
But I LOVE the female lead on the first sight and love her more with each episode. Don’t let me start on the male lead! He’s awesome! Unlike the regular male leads in Kdrama who rather resamble an ass, he’s just wonderful.
Other thing to watch? The most recent ones: 49 Days & The Greatest Love. Not so recent if you’re in the mood to laugh: Coffee House.
I watched 49 days on OneTVasia. It just ended and CH replaced it. One question from 49 Days: How come Yi-Kyung did not recognise her mom?
Someone told me I should watch the Endless Love series. I’ve watched Winter Sonata, didn’t really enjoy that. I think it’s because it was my first melodrama. Spring Waltz was better. Every time I download episode 1 of Autumn Tale, I get distracted with another drama. There are not enough hours in a day to watch all these dramas.
All that Glitters… 44 episodes already? How many episodes are there? I’m struggling to keep up with CYHMH. We’ll see. I’m hooked on Pit-a-Pat My Love/Sweet Palpitations and You Don’t Know Women. Watching that on tv. Should not have started watching Pit-a-Pat My Love, no other websites have it with subbies, and, in KDramaland, you definitely don’t stop watching a drama half way through.
Other than KDramas, Korean culture has influenced our lives, thanks to me! Starting with the food (kimbap, Korean pancakes, and bulgogi bibimbap is staple now), KPop (I took classical guitar lessons because of MSOAN) and, now, because of CH, trying to convince hubby to let me take martial arts classes… MUAY THAI!! I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time. Can’t convince him yet, since I cut myself and he blames CH for making me play with knives.
Maybe I’ll just take language lessons and learn Korean.
CH ep 1 will be on in an hour. Need my LMH fix of the day.
do you remember what your mom looked like when you were 7? how about 5. Think carefully, is the picture clear in your mind?
Yes, I do. One memory I have was when I was 7, when mom came back with a new haircut and baby sister did not recognise her. I even remember clearly how my grandmother looks like who passed away around that time, too. But my brother doesn’t, he was around 4 at that time. I guess it depends on the person, I remember things that I did before my brother was born, that are not in photos. I was 4. Hubby doesn’t remember anything before age 8. I guess you’re right.
And being Yi-Kyung, I think she just wanted to forget the mother that “abandoned” her.
Hi everyone! Watching Heartstrings now. I prefer the other title but it’s such a longggg title. Anyway, I like the show. It has its moments. PSH scores when she’s being wistful or serious. I cringe when she acts cute, like blowing her cheeks, widening her eyes….urgh, so contrived! She’s a good actress so I blame the director. You bad, bad director. Yong Hwa, on the other hand, is….um, very very calm. As for the love thing, I think she’s going to fall for him first.
What would the show be like if they had cast another guy in the lead? Siwon? Viola would be ecstatic, and I think Siwon would have brought a nervous energy to it. Plus he’d be perpetually showering after each biking session. Hey, come to think of it, how come there’re no shower scenes yet? YH’s too flabby? Kang-ah would have made us weep at the father-son guitaring scenes. Talking about Siwon, looking forward to Skip Beat. But a Taiwanese production? Makes me a bit worried. Taiwan dramas are soooo dramatic….oh well, at least it’ll keep Viola happy; if Viola’s happy, I’m happy!
Hi YY!!
I LOVE the manga Skip Beat, and at first I was very very hesitant about a Taiwanese version of it. I generally find them a bit over the top, and they tend to hit you over the head with everything. And then there is the language barrier, which is gong to make things..interesting.
BUT after much thought, and profound meditations under a waterfall, I came to this very simple conclusion: It doesn’t matter.
I get to stare at Siwon for an hour, who cares about the rest?!!:)
So, yes I am going to be happy! It is so sweet of you to say that my happiness will make you happy!
Viola!!!! Missed you!!!! I LOLed at your post….profound meditations under a waterfall HAHAHAHA I hope you were clothed, wouldn’t want you to catch a chill or the animals of the forest to get a shock. I loveee Skip Beat the manga tooo. I love Ren. I think Siwon is perfect for the role. Just wish it were a kor production.
Agree with you on PSH. I wonder if she or her manager ever tell them how they want the character to develop. She must not like playing the clown like that. It just doesn’t go with what I am guessing is her real personality.
Yes, OK, she is 21, and flighty, but not stupid. Classical music majors spend lots of time learning history, focusing on tiny movements of their hands, nuances in the music to excel.
The speech about dedication to the SHOW, and CRAFT from the director still doesn’t sit with me.
She is someone who understands that practicing makes her better.
“Oh? To be a good dancer, I have to practice more? That dancer girl practices dance to be better? She is more worthy than me because I spend hours and hours a day with my gayageum but I don’t sweat like her.”
Where am I going with this? I have no idea.
YY!
*HUGS*
I think that is a good idea, have Siwon in a kdrama like this. He would be perfect! Have you ever seen this clip? I can just imagine him in Heartstrings!
Hi MJP!!!! *hugs back with unmoving face* Siwon smiled at me throughout the drum performance.
YY,
Are you comparing the power of Siwon’s smile to the power of Botox injections into the lips?
No, I’m practising the art of not moving the face. I learnt it from Yong Hwa in Heartstrings. It’s very calming.
Y’know maybe the “stillness” is Yong Hwa’s anti-ageing method.
Coz it takes 72 muscles to frown, 14 to smile, and 0 to do nothing at all. So, minimal to no muscle movement = less likelihood of having wrinkles. Let’s just pray, he doesn’t fossilize in the process.
We’ll find out in 50 years.
YY and Izzie,
LOL!!!
Ya know I was watching a show… it recently came on. The one where the teenage girl gets pregnant and the guy leaves only to come back later. I forget the title but anyways, an adult couple is struggling to have a baby and they want to adopt but the mother-in-law completely shuts the idea down. What’s this whole thing about adopting? I don’t understand. Can somebody please explain because it somewhat boggles my mind.
If you ask why some Korean people(esp.elderly people) are sensitive on the subject of adoption, it’s probably because blood relations are considered very meaningful in Korea. It seems that the increase in domestic adoption is due to changes in attitude in Korean society with a growing number of people positive about adoptions though.
hi OTers..hope you guys r having a lovely kdrama filled weekend.Actually i wanted your opinion and views regarding a kdrama i just finished-”BAKER KING,KIM TAK GU”as I was in a bit of a mood for makjang(n tak gu is easy on the eyes too)
Surprisingly it was quite fun,had some real lol moments in the emotional scene, but i didnt regret watching it nevertheless.the only thing i didnt like was how the romantic plotline ended…’SPOILER ALERT”..
So my question is-Can somebody please explain to me why SHIN YU KYUNG(EUGENE) married the anti hero GU MA JUN..i cant seem to follow her thought..n till da last 10 minutes i still hoped she would return to tak gu..n tak gu ends up with the baker girl min su.they have the worst chemistry i’ve ever seen in a kdrama.they honestly looked like siblings…sigh
I felt the same after I watch it.
I think she thought she was better fit for him.
Because Tak-gu didn’t have so much darkness inside, so even when she loved him she wanted to protect him form her. At he same time, I think she found a connection with the other guy after marring him.
But that’s me
@zgznoona
hmm,i think i get wat ur saying..i never thought it dat way,as in she felt connection with the other guy..both damaged souls…but i cant believe it was a national drama, the raings rising up to 50%
Do you guys know that Yoon Kye Sang actually LIKED Jung Juri? My favorite comedian in variety shows????
I find it AWESOMEEEE.
And made me love YKS more.
Here’s the article: http://www.allkpop.com/2009/10/yoon_kye_sang_fell_in_love_with_jung_ju_ri_and_kim_min_jung
wow kim min jung must be some kisser!
Just dropped by to say Hi to all OT’ers! /waves
Laya! Happy OT!
I hope you don’t have to work this weekend.
Hi cmr!
Thank goodness I don’t! The monsoon is bringing us a lot of rain and flood and our workplace is in a flood-prone area, so… xDD How is your weekend?
Fabulous! I’m recently home from the wedding of a college friend. He and I aren’t close, but a mutual friend is so I went as her +1. We had a great, great time
When is monsoon season over? We have to get you dried out, lady.
hi @joybells, i cannot seem to find the reply, so here is a new comment.
yeah, i do know what you are talking about the K-soaps (i used to watch it when i was young and then later i watched south indian (telugu) soaps), but lately i am completely addicted to K-dramas.
it was two years ago that i got into K-movies (Il Mare aired on our SBS, the australilan tv channel not the korean one and i was transfixed to the tv) and then you know the rest….
then coffee prince got me into the K-dramas, which was six months ago…and i found DB four months ago..and i have been on it ever since!
if you don’t mind me asking, where do you live in india?
@ ramen_girl…nope i wouldn’t mind one bit.im from north-east india, but next month i will be moving to south india(tamil nadu),as im starting my college in chennai.
im guessing you are from south india?!?!? so you r in australia rite? do you work/study there?
As for kdramas there are lots n lots for you watch.you wont know where to start..but be warned once you take the plunge there’s no goin back, and your going to be seriously addicted..haha..and i wont even get started about japanese and taiwanese dramas.
as for k-movies have you watched “sassy girl”, “windstruck” “the king and the clown” “100 days with mr arrogant”..those are a bit old but definitely fun movies.
You started with coffee prince right-the female lead’s another drama “princess hours/goong” is a must watch too,if you like rom-com (with a bit of politics n fantasy elements thrown in)
@joybells….yes, i have watched all of the above things you have suggested except for “the king and the clown”.
yup, i live in melbourne and am in last year of my high school (year 12) though i was born in hyderabad, i have also grown up in shillong for about three years…..and thanks for your warning, but i am already immersed neck deep with K-dramas, which i have to cut out very soon (more like days), so as to study hard – *sob*
i have very less control in the self-control department and i dont know how i am going to manage without watching any K-dramas and my beloved City Hunter…and i guess…i have to simply make do with gf and jb’s recaps!
you study well in chennai, i am sure you will have loads of fun!!!
(one more question: how did you get into K-movies and dramas and are they popular in the north-east? just curious!)
@ramen_girl,i guess we are a year apart,so dat makes me your “unni” hehe..
As for the korean wave here in N-E india, its biggggg..it began a few years back..you’ve lived in shillong right,so you know basically how the people here in N-E india look like(as in physical features wise).we are basically of mongolian descent, so the teenagers n people in their tweens, feel a connection to the korean society.our society n theirs are at its core quite similiar. i don’t know how to exlain this (you have to see it youself),but its like the kids here are more into the whole “k-pop”fashion thing than drama watching.Mostly its the girls who watch dramas, here.
you know the harry potter wave a few years back (hey atleast no one here sported potter glasses),well the korean wave is 100 times worse.i mean all the boys n girls here dress like their korean counter parts…”oppa” and “sarangae” have almost become part of our local dialect.
As for me i got into kdrama way way back before this whole korean wave hit here.at first my friends thought it was a phase i was going through and refused to be a part of it,but nobody can resist the power of k-dramas for long, heh….
In my house the word “kdrama” is a taboo..haha.as i basically screwed up my studies and health coz of it(i dont eat ,sleep or study when i watch drama).but now i’ve got some controll over it,n im balancing things quite well..haha
The parents are like”whats with the kids these days, competion is tuff, kollege admissions brutal, n their dressing sense!!!”.k-pop inspired hairstyles only makes things worse.they are hoping its something we will grow out of.
sorry for tht long post
but in N-E states(the 7 sisters),common hindi channels dont air (i don’t know why),instead korean channels like arirang, kbs, sbs (with english subtitles) air..so maybe thats how the korean wave stared there.
In my state and home town though(im from nort-east india, but my state dosen’t come under the 7 sisters) ,we’ve got he regular hindi channels and we dont have those korean channels.my friends from there sent me korean dvds n i usually watch most of the dramas online.
@joybells, haha! my friends here suggest me to admit myself to k-drama rehabilitation centre (if there is such a thing) to cure my k-movie and drama obsession!
hey u galzzz….;)
@joy really????there is a korean wave in India??? u have no idea how lonely I feel here because of my kdrama n kpop addiction!!! well….since u r gonna come 2 chennai soon…I guess u will know how it is here!!!am from kerala…but right now am in bangalore for my project;) It m8 b hot in chennai….u r gonna do ur degree nw?? I guess am ur unnie…since am a post graduate!!;)
just want to let this out! im CITY HUNTER OBSESSED! lee minho and park minyoung are the best! ugh. can’t they get it on in both reel and real life like right NOW? they are too adorable for words! =)
im also into I Need Romance… hahaha. kim jung hoon! i so missed you and still love you even if i am currently hating your role hahaha! i want inyoung and sunghyun to end up together! LOL.
lastly… my last spazz is not a korean drama but a japanese one… well it’s still korean related though since it was SNSD’s seohyun’s fault im watching this drama now hahaha… she recommended it in her birthday interview! LOL… anyway it’s Hotaru no hikari (Hotaru’s light) gosh. its so cute and very AWH. =)
i still haven’t started Heartstrings which is a major bummer since it’s my second awaited drama since My Princess hahaha. this is all my friend’s fault. she said it was boring T_T i so have to catch up… hahaha… =)
To those who live in Seoul, does anyone have a link to real estate or property websites that aren’t aimed at expats. Looking for a friend who wants to buy an apartment in Seoul but all we can find on google are expat websites. Thanks in advance!
I don’t know much about property websites for English speakers, but I guess you can get some information on http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/
If you read Korean, there are real estate-related websites ranked in the top 3 according to internet traffic statistics.
http://www.r114.co.kr/
http://www.speedbank.co.kr/
http://www.joinsland.com/
and it’s possible to check a proper apartment price(including monthly rent with security deposit) based on transaction data on http://www.onnara.go.kr/ offered by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
btw do you really mean that you are looking for a friend who wants to buy an apartment in Seoul, not that you’ve searched on the interent for a friend who wants to buy an apartment?
sorry, I’ve got some trouble speaking and understanding English. ^^;
Hey crzcpl,
Have you tried Naver or Daum, instead of Google? I haven’t looked but I’m certain they must have something there. Of course, it’d be in Korean, if it isn’t aimed at foreigners.
Happy OT everyone!
I’m looking forward to “8 Gatsu no Love Song” which will begin distribution through au’s LISMO service on August 5. Actress Sakai Miki (33) and actor Park Jung Min (24) of the Korean boy band SS501.
“8 Gatsu no Love Song” is about a Korean pop star and a Japanese housewife, who have a dangerous one-night romance.
Dum dum duuuuuuuuuuuuuuum.
sorry, couldn’t help it…
CMR,
What I wonder is just how in the world does a Japanese housewife do a one night stand with a Korean Pop star? I thought all Japanese housewives do is stay at home or go shopping, just like American housewives.
And, did you watch Fuyu no Sakura? I did, and let me tell you, that Japanese husband was Pschyo!!! Don’t mess with a japanese husband… I’m just sayin’!
It does sound a bit like the plot to a questionable fanfic. I have not watched Fuyu no Sakura (adds to list) but now I’m a wee scared! lol. I’m guessing it’s the standard 10 episodes? I’m sure I can shoehorn it into my “packed” schedule.
Yes, thankfully only 10. Heavy on the melo.
I’ve thought about downloading dramas, sticking them on a flashdrive and taking them to work with me so I won’t have to worry about which sites will or won’t work during my lunch hour. Mayhap this will be my test run.
hi everyone…
a few years ago, in my schooldays i was really obsessed with harry potter. and now i am in college wen a classmate from NE of India introduced me and friends to the vast world of Kdramas thro DGCH. Since then it has been a nose dive into the drama world with no looking back…
In our place there are no k-channels in the local cable. so wen i come home every weekend, i watch a few episodes of various dramas and i download those which i feel are good and i watch with my friends.. thus i am the one who feeds their drama addiction.
i am quite sure i will end up in heaven for my good deeds!!
currently we r watching CH. we loved DGCH, YB, CP. BOF as well.
considering our taste, can any veteran guide this newbie in the right path?;-)
Hi newbie!
First off, welcome to OT/DB. Beware, though, for this site is equally-addicting as watching kdramas.
I’m not a kdrama veteran, but I’ve watched a “decent” number of those. (Do the words “decent number of kdramas” apply to a kdrama addict? Not sure…) I can provide a long list of what I’ve seen and highlight those that I recommend, but I’d rather point you to the direction of what would help you more on this matter: DramaBeans’ Year in Review threads.
Just click on the top posts link above the header, and it will lead you to a page with a list of the most interesting threads in this site, including the year-end drama reviews.
Good luck, and I hope that at that early stage of kdrama addiction, you hold on tight to self discipline (while you still have it). Many of us have tossed our EQs out of the window a looong, long time ago. We’ve become raging raccoons with eyebags the size of Texas.
Annyeong!
@ newbie~
Welcome to the delightful-but-dangerous world of K-drama addiction! Based on the dramas on your list, I think there’s a good chance you’ll also enjoy many, if not all, of the following:
*My Name is Kim Sam Soon (aka My Lovely Sam Soon)
*Sungkyunkwan Scandal
*My Girlfriend is a Gumiho– written by the Hong Sisters (who wrote DGCH and YB)
*My Girl– also by the Hong Sisters
*Best Love (aka The Greatest Love)– another Hong Sisters gem; just finished airing
*Brilliant Legacy (aka Shining Inheritance)
*Prosecutor Princess
*Dream High
*Full House– not as well done, but was very popular and tends to appeal to BOF fans
This list is just to get you started– there are plenty of other good (and/or addictive) dramas out there! In addition to Izzie’s good suggestion about the year-in-review threads, you may also want to check out the page where JB and GF have rated the dramas they’ve watched: scroll down to the bottom and click on “My Drama Ratings” (on the left, under “Resources”). Hope this helps!
hey newbie….;)
r u from India????
yes, i am….
Viola, Shiku, MJP unnie, YRH and anyone I might have missed…thanks for the wedding well-wishes. It was absolutely beautiful and I had a great time seeing old friends. The reception was wonderful! We danced and hung out to the wee hours of midnight, and woke up with headaches of joy
Kdrama addicts are used to having headaches of joy. So I’m pretty sure you’re okay
You’re very welcome, cmr!
Ah, YRH, you are very right. It was nothing I hadn’t suffered before.
Glad to hear you had a good time!
*RETURN-EARLIER-HUG!* Thank you. Me too! Coming back into the city, my friend and I were joking that we need to do this again next weekend
weekend getaways with friends… highly recommended.
was finally able to catch up with City Hunter.
oh. my. sanity.
oh. my. eyes.
izzie,
Hi! I’m watching Love Keeps Going with English Subs. Already watched it RAW on Sunday.
I’m waiting for Tudou to get their system working. It was working earlier, but now it just cycles without showing the video. I am trying to watch Beautiful Spy Ep2 RAW. So I switched over to LKG while I wait!
