Probably many of you have seen this, but I just saw it for the first time two days ago. There is this popular TV show called “Britain’s Got Talent,” which started in the summer of 2007 by Simon Cowell. It spread like wildfire across the world, with a ton of countries having their own version. About a month ago, Korea starting airing its version of the show (“Korea’s Got Talent”). The premise of the show is that ordinary-ish people just come on and showcase what they got – be it dancing, magic acts, singing, whatever. Three judges give each group or individual a pass or fail, and so on.
And so, a month ago, a young man came on the show. He wanted to sing. Nothing special about that, except for two things.
1. This young man had a story that is just extraordinary. Abandoned at an orphanage at age 3, an abused runaway homeless child at age 5, Choi Sung Bong never went to elementary school or middle school. He never knew his parents, didn’t have anyone to help him grow up. Yet with the help of some very kind people, he was able to get his equivalency degree so as to be able to apply to high school. He was able to get into Daejeon Arts High School, a performing arts school, and managed to graduate despite not having enough money to take all the courses that he wanted to take.
2. He can sing like no other Korean baritone that I’ve ever heard before. His raw talent is unparalleled.

I think he is still in the show. There is an article about him in allkpop which I just saw.
I watched the video, samsooki. He’s good but what makes him special is his story and how he tells it.
What coincidence, I was wondering yesterday what had happened to him since he appeared on that show. Anybody?

I have really to thank you because you let me see and hear such story and voice. When he told his story I started to tear up but when I heard him sing I could not hold my self from crying. Hope his life will change from now on…

By the way, although their background stories are different, this made me think of Paul Potts. His performance of Nessun Dorma still gets me the way Mr Choi just did. *sigh* Amazing.

It was one of those early dramas, when I finally succumbed to the charms of kdrama, and for the likes of K! R! W! And Patzzi was a keeper. Though Attic Cat still PWNs. (I am an astute, dilligent rom-com/chick-flick nazi but every so often my resolve softens.)
Not watching Korea’s Got Talent but I have been watching Audition for a Miracle every Friday for the past few weeks. I love the panel of actors: Lee Beom-soo, Kim Gab-soo, Lee Mi-sook, Lee Jae-yong, the guy behind the Friend/Chingu franchise PD Kwak Gyung-taek… ‘Specially nice to see Lee Beom-soo back on the small screen though.
Among the circle lens wearing Hwang Jung-eum clones *aeee… giowah*, I think there are a few with real acting potential. Sadly those are only male or under 5s and stuff. Sheesh.

My Dad sent me this clip couple of weeks ago. You know, I am kist skeptical about his background.
I recalled in 1987, a family friend of ours adopted a baby girl from Korea. The couple waited for long time before having the chance to adopt this girl. the following year, they wanted to adopt another baby, but the Korean government banned all adoption because of Olympic.
I just wonder how old is he? I believe plenty of couples want to adopt Korean kids, but why he did not get adopted?
The baby girl now has already finished graduate school, but their parents has separated when she was in high school. She seems growing up OK.
I think he was born in 1990, making in 21 by non-Korean years and 22 by Korean standards (they add a year).
The thing about adoption is that there has been a cultural stigma attached them because families go by blood and a baby not of own’s own blood is hard to accept. Adoption for a 3 year old would have extremely unlikely.
I meant adopted out. I guess, he was just abandoned at the orphanage. It is hard to believe that he lives in toilet and staircase.
Some years ago, we financed couple of humanitarian projects in Mongolia, hence i have to visit Mongolia for a couple of times. I recalled seeing many street kids wondering the street at -20 temperature. I wonder how they keep themselves warm? the following day, i was told more them 30 of them perished in the gas holes to keep warm. It is so much one can help during a situation when a state failed!! it was always a regret that our aid came too late and too slow!!
The horrible thing about adopting is the mentality that some adopters have. Although they want to help, because they adopt out of a sort of “pity” or with an attitude that they are helping “poor unfortunate souls”, the children grow with a sort of inferiority complex of sorts.
A child cannot be adopted if they are abandoned.You can only adopt if the biological mother signs a form to give the baby up.
He was from an orphanage true.However abandoned children in Korea cannot be adopted out.Therefore they stay there.
Heartbreaking isn’t it?The reality for them.Not for him which is a separate issue but might explain why he ran away.

I watched it a while back, someone had posted a link on the OT. But I just watched it again this week on [CNN.com].
It is truly a moving story. I sure hope he has some emotional support during this time. Because if you remember what happened to Susan Boyle, she had a bit of emotional breakdown due to all the sudden popularity.
Does anyone know if Korea, is pro-mental health care? I ask because Jang Geun Suk recently confessed in an article that he was depressed and came out of it on his own. It didn’t seem like there was much of a support system for him.

Hi MJP….actually I read about JGS depression…I feel totally bad about that…poor guy needs to go away for a while and just be a normal Joe for a couple of months, he is just burning himself, and while he is at it get a new hair cut and eat some more.
I hope he got the support he needed or seeking some type of therapy, depression is can turn very deadly if the person is not treated on time.

I saw depression and treatment of such in a drama once. The three brothers. The tul chib salam ( by the way I hate chib salam “person of the house”?) was in a bad way with her inlaws and her husband she went to what looked like a store front and the man there advises her to wear make-up, laugh out loud and get education. It was done in a comical way though.
Depressions should not have a stigma and should always treated seriously. I totally agree with you MJP !!! I just bought myself ‘I HAD A BLACK DOG’ A Brilliant Book!

I believe most of the celebrities could not handle fame very well. Money can buy lots of thing, but not love, freedom and peace of mind.

That is so true! When I see some of the fan videos and all the screaming and bulbs flashing, it seems overwhelming to me just watching it.
So true, especially that today’s technologies cater to factors that can lead to burnout and overexposure: instant gratification, instant fame, multi-tasking, quick spread of (mis)information like forest fire… to name a few. Even ordinary citizens can shoot to fame overnight, and it’s scary to think that it can happen to people who are not groomed and conditioned to meet the “fringe benefits” of fame.
But then again, depression comes in different forms and packages. It can hit anyone, even the most cheerful people. The difference is how the affected people deal with it. I’ve had two phases of depression already, the first one was when I was a teenager and the other just a few years ago. The source? Nothing. Just nothing. I just had moments of thought when suddenly nothing seemed to make sense. It’s a horrible feeling to look at the world and see everything as pointless. I just fought back by searching for meanings in the things that I do. Having my family around (although I never told them about it) and giving myself time to cry and pray alone helped a lot. So yeah, it ain’t easy to tell your loved ones about it. I don’t know if they noticed it back then, but at the very least, I know I annoyed a few of them because of it. It was a pain that I wasn’t able to explain it coz I myself didn’t understand what I was going through.
Still, I worry for people like JGS and BYJ since depression can hit more than once for different reasons. I don’t know about them, but after going through depression, I felt both strong and fragile. Strong, thinking that I was able to go through it on my own, but fragile because I feel like the depression left cracks in my personality. It may sound corny, but faith and love are the things that glue me together. It’s already tough for an ordinary person like me, it may be double or triple the difficulty for celebrities who have to calculate their every move.
I salute Choi Sung Bong for making it through the difficult times of his life and get to that point when he’s seeing the fruits of his labor. I just hope that the things he experienced before has prepared him to deal with the negative effects of fame. I’m cheering for him and I choose to believe his story. If he’s not telling the truth then I leave it to his karma. Great voice, by the way. And it’s good to hear that it’s serving him well.
Powerful story, Izzie. I think more ppl go through bouts of depression than we (the general public) realize.

In this episode, Shin got over his feelings for the ballerina and at the same time KW decided to forget about LS. KW told this to LS and what do u know? LS start to develop feelings for KW! They have this scene where LS offered to take KW home but he got blown off! HAH take that LS! and she also sang…”I’ll forget you” by CN Blue

I notice though, that her best songs seem to be covers of songs that her co-stars sing.
I don’t like the other one she has on the OST currently; her singing voice tends to the whiney side which I don’t understand because her speaking voice is really pleasant.
The first episode that I really liked all the way through.
I guess I just needed Shin to take a step away from ballet and towards the gayageum.
It didn’t hurt that PSH sang one of my fav CNBlue songs, I Will Forget You, which has a lovely melody and guitar accompaniement.
The English version Teardrops in the Rain lyrics are very sad, too. Let me make it clear that the english version is on my every day play list, and I love the emotion in his voice, and I love this song.
But, add his close enough pronunciation and you get a pretty song that sometimes makes you laugh out loud.

My husband’s theme song. He says he can eat anything if it’s breaded, deepfried and dipped in ranch dressing. For Father’s Day, he and the other dad’s in our “gang” decided that we needed to have a “fryfest” with the turkey fryer. They fried chicken, sweet potatoes, french fries, twinkies (yes, they did), snickers, breaded marshmellows, fruit pies, jalapeno poppers…..the works. Us ladies spent the day guarding the fryer from the collective 14 kids we have. They had a good time, but it made me a little ill just thinking about it.
Its not that good as i hoped. i think i’m dropping this drama.

episode 7 is different. i was going to stop watching it but watched episode 7 (in fact skipped 5 and 6 due to lack of interest) and was sucked back in
I lurved it! I didn’t even mind that there was no episode 8 this week (poor ShinHye, hope she’s recovering well) because episode 7 totally delivered. I am even writing a recap of it, though what that will turn out to be like, I have no idea >_>
The sad part is that ep. 7 delivered soo much that I’m in physical pain just waiting for ep. 8
But still…i hope Shin Hye unnie gets well soon ^^

Really you didn’t miss the episode. I sure did. I looked and looked for it but couldn’t find it. I went to various sites looking for it.
Then when DarkUmagon posted the special, I remember that Korea films almost live and wouldn’t have any more episodes.
I wonder what they are going to do if she still doesn’t feel good? I would just use a stand in (like they do in Broadway productions) and keep the story moving. But in Korea, it seems they won’t do that very often. I read one story where they used stand in’s to complete a show because the guy was called for military service.

I can’t say I was thrilled not to have an episode 8, but what I mean was that after episode 7 put my heart at ease regarding the direction the show was going in, I could sit back and look forward to what is to come, rather than worry about a beloved show being taken in a very bad direction. I would have actually loved an episode 8, but if it wasn’t meant to be, at least we have the awesomeness of episode 7 to tide us over 
I’m actually wondering what they will do if she doesn’t recover by next week. I don’t think it will be the case, but if you look at it from a pure ratings and preparation perspective, then another week of waiting might actually work in their favor. After City Hunter is over, a LOT of the City Hunter fans will be watching Heartstrings, I’m pretty sure about that, whereas chances to get a boost in the ratings during the week of CH’s finale are slim to none.

I don’t know about waiting a week, Protect The Boss is after CH, and it looks really good! Ji Sung just came off a a good run with Royal Family and JYJ’s Hero Jaejoong who has all the fan girls swooning with delight.
Thanks to the internet, I get to watch both, but for ratings purposes in Korea, it might hurt Heartstrings.

I just really want it to do well, for some reason. I don’t care about ratings when it comes to my enjoyment of the show but I think about the cast and crew working hard and getting to see the kind of ratings they have been receiving week after week, it must be disheartening.

I have seen ep. 7 and love it.
How touching is the ending song by KW.. and I think S is starting to be aware of his feelings too…. what is interesting at the end of KW performance… how the reporters and other students felt about the selection of the female lead since they looked more interested in KW’s performance.
Now.. what confused me is SH… I thought he is back with ex.. but somehow i felt like he is more interested in KW as well.. may he sees her as a potential like he see in KY… let’s not have him get in the way of KW and S…
I am looking forwards to see more development between KW and S.. and wanted to know more about the development of the 2 teams of the musical… obviously T will take HJ as the female lead… don’t think he can steal KY since he did not trust him… I think SH will use KW as female lead.. and the male lead will be KY and S?
I can’t wait for the new ep of heartstrings since we got rid of the S’s one-sided love storyline.. let’s have more OTP development and the musical….

Shin seems to be jealous of SH? Are they going to spice up the story by having SH interested in KW? You know, like in love with her freshness and youth, like in Coffee Prince where The Voice is so attracted towards the girl, despite being in love with his girlfriend. I watched it without subs, caught the gist of it, thought PSH was awesome. As for the Man of Still, SPOILER *****He cried in the first scene, and I was impressed cos he looked really broken, but then next scene…******SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!*****whoa, he’s like, SO STILL. Again.
I hope they do, God, I am counting on it.
His face lights up when he sees her, and they are so playful together. It would be fun to see their closeness change, in an instant, from relaxed to charged with sex-i-licty!

As far as I’m concerned, I don’t really think SukHyun and the ballerina are going to be another The Voice + ex in Coffee Prince. For some reason I don’t see them ending up together and making it work in the end. Maybe it’s because she left him once to pursue a dream and I doubt if she had the chance she would choose differently, and I think he knows that. I think his falling for Kyu Won will give him a chance to move on from that relationship, that whole first love that left him thing. The way I see it, they will always have special feelings for one another but what they need is closure, not a new beginning.
Haha i would love for that to happen! But i have the prediction that SH doesn’t rly like KW but is only trying to make LS jealous like the part when LS tried to take KW home but KW said yes to SH instead and he made this little face like he knows what’s going on. (love that part btw!)
And am i the only one who still thinks that Ki Young will somehow fall for KW despite the fact that they didn’t show himmuch in ep 7?
I would love to see KY and S fight over KW… and please don’t make KY pair with HJ… i will hate it if that happen.
If the character correlation chart is to be believed, then Ki Young is likely to fall for Kyu Won, or at least establish a pretty close relationship. I don’t know how that’ll happen though, since we are already at episode 7 and the only interaction they had was during the first
audition for the play.
I just watched ep. 7 of HS and it was MILES above in quality from the last 4 or 5 eps. The PD and writers FINALLY got rid of 99% of the adult crap/situations/angst and put the focus back where it belongs – on the kids and their dramas and relationships.
If this is the result of the PD holing up with the writers for a few days, more power to ‘em!!
It was a pleasure to watch – fingers crossed that this is the direction they’ll continue to aim for. I’m back on the bus and happy about it!
Now lets hope that PSH’s recovery goes well and they get back to filming ASAP.
The one sided love with Mopey Ballerina was just bad bad bad. I don’t blame the writers so much on that one.
If you put a Kim Soo Hyun in as Shin..ooh, or maybe a Yoo Ah In, I think we all would have pulled for him…
i think what you liked about it is that the main characters’ relationship is coming to the forefront.
I don’t mind that there was so much other stuff…but I have a feeling that there will be a lot more of tiny stuff to deal with.
i liked this episode because shin’s not just focusing on guitar…it’s also funny, in that it’s a sorta reversal of the slave contract since he’s not familiar with traditional music stuff…
i’m also curious about the musical story…thnk about it. according to the press conference interview in the episode, it’s one guy between 2 women. If one adds in that it’s also the dance prof’s story…then wouldn’t the supporting actress actually get the guy?
i also think this is the beginning of kiyoung beginning to “watch” kyu won.
jokingly, if i was shin in this episode, i’d be like “what the heck, the old guy gets BOTH of the ladies?!? This can’t be happening”
i do wish there was more music/songs in this episode (one “i’ll forget you” song and the jam session(?) doesnt’ quite meet it…unless someone can explain what han hi ju was singing…) oh well

I still need to watch the ep with subs but homg the bus scene was lovely. and Yay for more fusion music. You know I never really hated the angst in the previous episodes, it was necessary for character growth and new relationship development. it didn’t hurt that the angsty rain scenes were beautifully shot. Thank goodness they have cut down the flashbacks though, man those were annoying.
While I got frustrated at the lack of OTP moments, I am starting appreciate the gradual but realistic progression of their relationship. I guess I need to have more faith in the drama. ooo can’t wait for ep 8 and wish PSH a speedy recovery.

aww, you guys are making me feel special…i just graduated in may and we’d been fed with these stories of how new grads never get jobs because they have no experience.
i actually got lucky because i just sent them an unsolicited application and they responded. the interview was pretty good but you never know until you get the offer right?
i just feel so blessed right now that things are working out for me
as for the work part- i haven’t actually started; i’ve been doing online orientation courses for the past week!

I am a Masters student at Kings College London and a huge fan of K-drama, conducting research for my dissertation on Korean drama fans: REC Reference Number: [ KCL/10-11_1125]
I am looking to recruit 10 volunteers who currently live outside of Asia to answer a few questions about why they love Korean dramas and how they came to them in the first place. Participation is entirely voluntary and will mean responding to emailed questions over an agreed week in August (i.e. 7 days maximum). Think about it, those SUPER humidifiers have to be able to battle the incredibly dangerous effects from Korean rainfall.
Only in Kdramas can we see folks fall ill with a fever immediately after being exposed to rain.

One of the funniest scenes for me, EVER, was in BOF. Remember when Ji-Hoo is staggering through the rain after meeting his derelict/doctor/President/fisherman Grandfather? He collapses onto Jan-Di who puts him to bed, he’s still wearing the soaking wet coat (at least she took off his boots), covers all that wetness in blankets, she feels his forehead for a temp, then puts on a wet cloth RIGHT ON TOP OF THE HAIR, where it stays. It must have worked well cause when he gets up, his hair is in its’ pristine, combed glory. And his coat was dry. That must have been some fever…but, he was cured! Another K-drama MIRACLE!! (At least she didn’t leave him pancakes of sadness for breakfast!)
I get uncomfortable for him every time I watch that scene!
I totally remember thinking,

I think I know that one. When you get upset your blood pressure might rise, and hence feel pain/pressure ob the back of your head.

I think it’s the equivalent of the American mannerisms of the elderly grabbing at their chest/heart area. Like, “Florence! You’re killing me! – stop spending!!”
I don’t think korean noses bleed easily, nor that all koreans get fevers quickly, or they all suffer from amnesia/aphasia when shocked it’s just a dramas way to show how extreme the circumstance. Sometimes it falls flat or makes me roll my eyes and sometimes it comes across funny.
Actually… I teach a lot of Korean students, and they do seem to get nosebleeds at a strangely high rate.

an asian friend of mine gets nose bleeds if she sneezes, she says she has a thin nasal membrane. but the easy nosebleed I’m referring to is the one they get when we see them spend literally 5 minutes overworking, studying or whatever.
Well, when I was in the medical field, they taught us that the number one cause of nosebleeds (whatever patients might say) was nose-picking. So… take whatever you will from that…
I got into a fight once and was left with a pretty bashed up nose. My nose was never the same again – always bleeding when I sneezed a wee bit too hard.
I think extreme cold and extreme hot weather also causes nose bleeds, specially when you’re anaemic
I had frequent nose bleeds as a child and I wasn’t much of a nose picker.
Spent a lot of time with tissues stuck up my nose. I haunted me for a long time to the point that for years whenever I felt my nose running I assume it was bleeding and would react defensively to protect my clothes from blood stains.

I actually don’t think that the dramas love nose bleeds so much as they love having actors sticking tissue in their bleeding nose and doing entire scenes that way.
And if both actors playing the scene have tissue in their noses so much the better.

Jin-Heon and Henry and Jin-Heon and Kim Sam Soon.
My initial dive into K-drama I was condition to expect bloody noses, piggy back rides, the heroine sitting on a swing and cars parked on inclines.
the kim sam soon stupid fight and plugged-busted-nose scenes were very endearing.
And stairs. OMG, all those stairs!!! Is everything in Korea built on a hill?!

I think his secret is that his dad was a N Korean spy trying to recover the ancient books for his country. Kang Woo, was born in S Korea while his dad was undecover in SK. Kang Woo is trying to find his dad by aquiring all the ancient books in hopes that it will give him a lead to his dad. (of course KW doesn’t know that his dad is a spy.. he only knows his dad went missing and that the books were a passion of his)

For once, I didn’t cringe or laugh my head off during the English exchanges. Actually, it’s always so much fun to listen to the Engrisser parts. Especially when the speakers look so tortured “exchanging light banter in Engrisser”. Remember the guy in BoF going: Hey, hey, hey, what’s up, bro” every time he “spoke” Engrisser very very slowly. He made me laugh like a crazy woman every time he spoke.

This makes me wonder. We have so many OT friends who are non-English speakers, but write/type so wonderfully in English. My question to them is: So, how is your English speach? Can you enunciate English well or is it easier to read/write English?
I would say that I am quite fluent in English, both oral and written wise. It’s hard to get rid of certain colloquial words though and sometimes I get confused because I speak a few languages and all the words get muddled together. However it’s easier to write English, I think. Mainly because I can see if I made any mistakes and therefore do the necessary corrections. Speaking is soo much fun though! I get to be British for a change. Heh
I’m fluent in English but I do have an accent. I lived in England for a while and lost some of it but it was still there, and since coming back home, my accent seems to have returned as well.
Like Ricky, I tend to get some words mixed up with the other languages I speak, mostly french ones, but that’s both an advantage and a disadvantage since many english words are similar to french ones so that expands my vocabulary for both languages. I guess the problem arises when I just think the word I’m thinking about in one language is the same as in the other because then I just end up looking silly to whomever I speak of. Or they don’t understand what I am saying and I can’t for the life of me figure out why
The funny thing is that I am now trying to learn Korean out of English books, and english is not the most phonetically… light language. It would be easier for me to learn in my own language but somehow because I use english subs, it makes more sense for me to translate things from Korean into English and viceversa.
I remember watching A man called God and Song Il Gook’s character had survived multiple gunshots (somehow, korea’s Jason Bourne) was telling his lady love to forget him and he said something like this ” I am not Michael I am Peter Pan.” I laughed my head off don’t know if it was his English or because an assasin was calling himself PeterPan
Hi MJP! I’m not a native English speaker, and when enunciation gets tricky at times, I do check with my trusty Oxford Eng Dictionary for the correct pronunciation. I was raised on British English/ Queen’s English in school, but TV and American shows have had a major influence as well. Written English is so much easier, the words just flow naturally; I’ve loved English books of all genres from small, practically grew up on them. English is such a beautiful language, and it makes me sad when small-minded politicians in my country make a huge issue out of it, and claim that it is a ‘foreign’ language which should never “take over” the standing of the national language. To me, English transcends all barriers; it is such a powerful tool of communication; how can we say that learning English is unpatriotic?!!!! Go boil your heads, dumbasses!!!!! I think in a mixture of languages, but my heart belongs to English, the language which has allowed me to see the world in so many different colours. I have to thank English for being here now, talking to you, dear MJP, whom I would never have known were I English-illiterate.

Hi Jomo, thanks for the compliments. Gosh, I’m blushing so hard now and my head’s swelled to such melon-size proportions it’s really heavy and makes it real hard to bend and type. Yes, it’s weird how I grasp English so easily, just was something I identified with from small. My dad loved English…I remember him poring over English dictionaries when small to better his command of the language; my mum devoured English romances in between cooking meals; they were also movie addicts who dragged us to the cinema to catch the latest English and American flicks. They also bought a ton of books for me to read from small; Yes, I practically grew up on books – loved reading, anything in English from English classics like Jane Austen and Bronte to American classics like Faulkner and Scott Fitzgerald. You can say I’ve been reading my whole life. I feel my English is a mix of both English and American influence, and thought that was it…. until I started watching Kor dramas and found that first stirring of pain in my heart, and realised wow, this is going to be a new major influence on my life.

I have similar experience with languages I’m familiar with. Like, when I first exposed to hebrew I would always mix it with spanish, now I mix korean with spanish and hebrew. so the simple sentence where are you might become:

Or I can start speaking in spanish and then answer “ken” “lo” “ani” My sister and I speak like this, except she learned arabic, it’s really funny sometimes.

I understand just enough of hebrew to know what ken and lo mean,haha. Funny you should mention spanish though. Since I started to learn Korean I’ve been noticing that Korean and spanish have a similar sonority, because of the way they both pronounce and use j, ch, yo and other particles. Some words or parts of words sound similar but mean different things, which causes much brain mixture.
At first I thought it just seemed that way to me because Spanish was the last language I learned and I was recognizing learning patterns, or that I was used to making connections with what I knew of spanish when I found something I didn’t understand, but that’s not even it, the two languages just have a bit in common when it comes to what they sound like.
When I’m tired, I tend to reply in whatever language comes to mind first so usually there’ll be cocktails of my native language, english, spanish and lately some Korean has been making its way in. I can’t say stares haven’t been provoked by this little habit but oh well
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show! Love Eric and Ye Seul, Ye Seul especially hamming it up with her robotic stiffness just cracks me up. I love that she takes her Mission so seriously. I love the side characters, the fake parents LOLOL. It’s so hilarious hearing that Mission Impossible soundtrack playing. The village stint with the snakes made me laugh so hard. I haven’t had this much fun since Couple or Trouble, where I first watched Han Ye Seul. She was amazing in that show. Can’t understand why some ppl find this show unfunny and silly….hey, it’s a fun show, don’t think too much, just enjoy the ride! Next ep’s preview looks soo romantic…can’t wait.

On a (sort of) side note, the hotness of the Ryu character got me interested in Lee Jin-wook (love the intensity of his eyes), and I started watching his drama Powerful Opponents (Rivals?). I don’t know what the general opinion is about this show, but I’m really enjoying it so far.

I haven’t quite figured out yet who the “powerful opponents” are in this drama. Basically, it’s about two secret service agents (Chae Rim and some guy) who’re protecting the President and his family. The two of them have a lot of friction (naturally), and even do have a kind of physical rivalry (so your vision of wrestlers isn’t that far off
). Lee Jin-wook is the President’s son, and he’s a tormented, PTSD-type, and there’s some kind of big secret in the past involving him and the male secret service agent that Chae Rim’s character is going to end up with. Anyway, I like Chae Rim in this drama, and I like Lee Jin-wook (and his character), so for now, I’m in to see what happens.

I’m not feeling any personal love for Lee Jong-hyuk, but I can appreciate that the way his character is set up will make it pretty awesome when he and Chae Rim’s character finally get together.

Oh me too! Some of the funniest scenes in the show so far. I also actually believe she could do it, which is a nice change from a main female lead whom requires that I spend much of a drama trying to suspend my disbelief that she really is a bodyguard or stuntwoman!

I’m enjoying this drama as well! I think objectively, it’s only an okay drama (there were some awkward parts with the acting and abrupt tonal shifts and the funny can be taken up another notch), but Myung Wol The Spy’s like the perfect summer drama with its campy fun. And love seeing MW experience a world so foreign to her, with dramas and fangirls and boys and learning how to be a girl in a modern, democratic society.
And I really want to know if Kang Woo’s some sort of spy!

I just watched the episode when pil joo’s mom comes to aejung’s house to find out what’s going on between piljoo and aejung. Paraphrasing: mom: so aejung is just doing it for the show? hyungu loudly: DINGDONG. It was super funny. My living room is very echo-ey!

I wanted to answer your question from last week. I married my best friend. We were friends for two years, engaged for one year, now married for six years (that’s nine years total). I read the other’s comments from last week and our story is different.
We had both just come out of failed relationships. I took longer to heal than he did. He fell in love with me first and waited patiently for me, with love in his eyes (which troubled me because I didn’t feel the same way.)
I kept trying to send him back to his home state (he was looking for other employment), but we realized later that God had other plans for us. We went to a Christmas party in January (post celebration) and three different people at different times during the party mentioned to me how wonderful MJP Hubby is. I mentally noted the information, but didn’t think heavily on it.
There was a time during the party that I had nowhere to sit, so I sat next to him for the first time on a sofa (to where we were touching). I found out he was cuddly and I was a gonner. He reeled me in unknowingly with his body warmth. I just wanted to snuggle next to him, like continually.
So the next time we got together, I made my move (this per MJP Hubby) and sat next to him on the love seat at my house. Once I made up my mind to think of him as husband material, we were engaged on Valentine’s day, a month later. The first time we kissed was on our wedding day! Yes, REALLY!!!!!!! I think you KNOW what that means!!!!!
p.s. I still like to snuggle next to him, but Wee MJP gets jealous, so we don’t get to snuggle as much as we like. Sunday, Wee MJP, MJP Hubby and I were in JCP (a store) waiting for the sale to start, sitting on a sectional sofa. Wee MJP comes over to me and sits down and puts his little arm around me and gives me a hug! It was an “AWWWWWW!!!!!!!” moment.

I wasn’t a fan of lee min ho either, I’m not a fan of pretty boys in general but I’ve been reading the city hunter recaps and the ladies make it seem sooo cool so I decided to watch personal taste to get a taste and I like personal taste lee min ho some of the time but city hunter lee min ho is a laugh.
personal taste is what got me into the kdramas. I love that is was cute and funny. I’ve found better dramas after that one of course, but that is my first love. You never forget your first.

Unfortunately, I have looked and looked and there is no site for jdoramas or other Asian dramas like dramabeans. We are very lucky to have this site, it is definitely one of a kind!
As for what I’m watching, I have gotten very lazy lately – I can’t even be bothered to deal with mysoju – so I am just watching stuff on Dramafever: I just finished My Princess (a really good cast done in by some terrible writing, especially the last 4 episodes), and I am watching Heartstrings and I Need Romance. I want to watch Myung Wol, but I am waiting for more episodes to be available because I know I am going to want to watch them all at once.
That being said, if it is a drama I am really hooked on, like I Need Romance, I hang out on soompi until I find a raw link my computer likes, and watch the raws even though the only words I’ve picked up, after two years of dedicated kdrama-watching, are “love,” “friend,” “sorry,” “REALLY sorry” “thank you,” and “hurry.” Think I am ready for a trip to Korea yet? i want season 2.
From reading the recaps and watching the drama. I am going to predict that a Season 2 is likely (crossing fingers and toes and praying) as I believe that there is too much to cover in the final 2 episodes. So to have an open ending with the possible discovery by both the president and Yoon Sung finding out that they are father & son (my prediction) would be a nice way to prepare for season 2 and the opening of a whole new can of worms. If that’s the case a 9 months wait for all of us would be tight but fine for me (rest, commitments etc.).
Like everyone else I am loving this drama.
I get that feeling too. otherwise why are they adding so much stuff or dragging it out so much. I’ll even settle for a 4 episode special, just don’t lump everything into the last two episodes, neh hananim? neh?

I think if i knew it advance, I would try to sum up what I wanted to say. Do you know what you would want to say? Write it all down, then re-read it a few times and think… What is it that I truly want to convey? They re-write it again with less words getting to the point of what you want to really say. But… the “negotiations” in the US Congress right now are pretty amazing (in a bad way)… I don’t think anyone said it better than Stephen Colbert, when he said that Republicans’ idea of negotiation is “You scratch my back and I… get my back scratched.”

dae mul had a famous chaotic congress scene. as far as hot actors go kwon sang woo. His character in the beginning is great and then he becomes a doggy. A very attractive doggy, but a doggy nonetheless. Also there is cha in pyo. I can’t help but think of him as a sweetheart.
Daemul was really good. Awesome heroine and believable political intrigue.
It would be entertaining if it wasn’t so real. I can’t watch makes me too edgy.
Am trying not to follow it but I kinda am and it makes me depressed. Wish people would put people first instead of party.

I think we should all just start forming coalitions to lobby the big corporations because no matter how I think about it, those are the ones we need to think put us first, because then the politicians will be impressed.

Let’s see…Myung Wol The Spy is enjoyable for me because:
1) it’s not serious
2) I like the lead couple’s chemistry and the interaction of the other ‘couples’
3) I like that Myung Wol has definitely got it going on in some areas and in those she doesn’t it adds to her character ie. she’s totally fit. That she has no idea about guys/dating to me makes her more endearing
4) I like the older spies
5) the story is easy to follow
6) it’s a romance
7) Eric and the 2nd male lead are not bad to look at-at first I was all for the latter but know their characters’ personalities have made me switch

In the last episode, loved the talk between gramma and mom on the beach. Holy cow holy cow holy cow! Gave me goose bumps in a good way.
My favorite pairing ended up being Tae Sub and his mom. I was saying to my friends I hope to have that comforting relationship with my son once he grows to adult hood.
Can’t say enough how much I am hot for Kim Sang Joong.

In some ways I feel that my hubby and I are on our fifth or sixth stage in our 23 year marriage.

Just kidding, I am alluding to the fact that I like to be alone.
In my family, maybe because there were nine of us in a small house, I have always been the one to cherish my independence, and he respects that.
I always told him that I did NOT want to get old with him, half seriously, and that I would end my days alone in a Paris appartment… I am only recently starting to contemplate a better option with him by my side. Still prefer my solitude, but am coming around ever so slowly…

I was the youngest out of five kids and was often left to play by myself and since I didn’t get married until I was 38 I too really cherish my time alone. Hence, I stay up late at night, go on girls nights out or just get some alone time. We seem to be a lot alike in that aspect.

you know jomo no one seems to understand how it works in big families. We are 5 and we all prize solitude. Our youngest’s future plan is to live as a hermit in the mountains and by the time he was old enough to be too conscious of being crowded most of us had moved out. My parents are the same way coming from large families themselves ( my dad has 19 brothers and sisters) and my mother has always said when she’s retired she’ll live alone in a one room house in the amazon jungle. your paris aparteu is something I should suggest, there are even plants that eat people in the jungle.

Who else is from the US and is sad that Borders is closing?
I know those big mega bookstores are evil for putting many independent booksellers out of business years ago, but a bookstore is still a bookstore. I love the feel of a physical bookstore and love having such a wide selection at my fingertips. I still have access to a barnes and nobles but it’s never really on my way to anywhere.
And many people will be out of a job in the slow economy *sigh*
I will miss it simply because of some of my favorite memories having taken place at a Borders: attending four midnight premieres of Harry Potter books, and meeting JOSS F***ING WHEDON accidentally at a Borders (oh, it was epic).
I was really surprised when that happened… I had thought that they were a lot more popular than B&N. But then I guess thay just couldn’t keep up with the Nook. It’s so sad; I hate seeing fair competition die.
I AM! There are so very few bookstores in my city that are easily accessible and have everything I need and Borders was the main one for me. I am so sad that they are closing.
Borders was near one of my fave movie theaters. And their selection was often different from Barnes & Noble, which I really appreciated. Lots of writers and publishers are being hit by this, too.
Am sad too but I may have to drive there so that I could get some books I wanted at a discount.

I have to say that I am not sad. We stopped purchasing books for the most part and go to the library for books. It’s cheaper because we already pay for it in our taxes, so why pay again? Also, I do free ebooks from there too, less hastle than going somewhere. Plus, there is a lot of stuff free online to read.
I think printed books are becoming obsolete.
I had no idea that Borders was closing! There are actually a number of bookstores in my area so I think I’ll survive but I’m sorry you’ll have to go out of your way to get your bookstore fix. Since I’m kind of broke, I purchase most of my book online, at the used bookstore, or for free through Paperbook Swap, but I totally know what you mean about Borders. My favorite thing about bookstores? – that new book smell when you walk through the doors!

I Need Romance. Episode 11. Wow. Yeah, I have watched that scene about five times since Wednesday (you know the scene). Then I took a cold shower to cool down.
Question: I tend to find sageuks to be hit or miss (ex: LOVE SKKS, Painter of the Wind, Hong Gil Dong; can’t get past the first five minutes of Damo or Strongest Chil-Woo). How are the ones that have just premiered? Worth watching?

It does!! I’ve rewatched ep 11 a few times too, lol glad I’m not the only one
– But the hotness and sweetness of all that makes ep 12 and what will come in the next week it seem a bit hard to stomach… I mean it was hinted all along, but secretly I just wanted it to blow over easier – I guess In Young’s never going to have it easy, poor girl. Really liked the internal conversation via eye contact at the dinner table between the old couple. You are right it’s really hard to decide who to root for- after ep 11 I am rooting for the second love to work out, but it seems ep 12 and preview is trying to steer you hard away from that.
And logically speaking since it’s KJH first drama out of Army, they might write him a role where he ends up the best match? (after much much more groveling of course) IDK…
which scene? who is in the scene? I’m waiting for at least 4 episodes before I start watching again.

Sageuks: I just can’t watch ‘em. I love Park Shi Hoo, so I tried to watch the first episode. The blood, the fighting, the death, I skipped through and saw more, then turned it off. I was done. Even Grandpa is it in too, but I just can’t watch it.

Hana Kimi Remake is turning out to be pretty fantabulous. I admit I was very skeptical and a little puzzled at first, I mean, I loved the manga and all but making another adaptation only 5 years after the first seemed a little unnecessary. well, it turned out to be fun and entertaining so I guess it doesn’t matter anymore. The remake has pretty much the same awesomeness that awesomed in the original, with better theme songs and arguably a better director. There is no way to beat the original cast in the looks department imo, but in terms of characterisation, the current ensemble works better for me somehow. Sano, I could say I never really warmed up to him up until now. Oguri Shun may be an amazing actor but his portrayal was too cold for my liking. Nakamura Aoi’s Sano, on the other hand, is still the same stoic Sano, but he has this underlying dorkiness and awkwardness that I find totally adorable. Maeda’s overacting is surprisingly not annoying and i think she makes a more convincing boy than Maki. I still prefer Toma’s Nakatsu but Miura is doing a pretty good job. All in all, it’s full of wacky fun and delicious cheese. can’t wait for the next episode.

I love Oguri Shun, but I have to say you are right, they had his character way too aloof.
I’m still not totally sold on the cast though. I am glad that this time around the school is on the verge of bankruptcy and is a dump, that put a spin on it. Also, I like that they are getting more to the point with this one that rambling around a lot of characters. But who knows, they may ramble later.
I just don’t think anyone can beat Maki in my heart. I love everything she’s in. Or, rather, I love HER in everything she’s in. Her early dramas are a bit much even for me.
I would love to see a KOREAN version, which should be coming soon?? Because the first one really skimped on the romance.
Would you believe that I’ve never seen Kang Hye Jung in anything esle besides Miss Ripley and what ever little she had to work left such a good impression on me that Im going back and watching everything she’s been in….So far this week, I’ve seen her movies Love Phobia and Kiss Me Kill Me, music video As I look in the Mirror and episodes 1 and 2 of Flowers for my Life…She’s phenomenal!!!
I just read the recaps for flowers. I didn’t love it, but I was interested enough to want to see how that would play out as a film so I will be watching it.

If the course is just about teaching girls “techniques to make them more attractive, from how to put on make-up in the most flattering way to how to spot a liar by looking at his facial expressions”, that’s fine.
Learning to present yourself better and how to spot lying jerks is a good thing, but advertising it as a course to help girls pick up rich guys is definitely not.
I think life isn’t about marrying rich people. If someone desires success, power, and riches, they should obtain it with their own hard work. Why marry a millionaire when you can become a millionaire yourself? That’s how I think of it.
there’s a bravo tv show called millionaire matchmaker that is somewhat similar. the matchmaker holds casting calls for attractive professionals usually from 25 to 35 and the male client usually chooses the 25 year old, she scolds him and suggests he dates an older woman. sometimes he hits it off with the older woman but usually not. I think it’s possible for a girl of modest means to date and marry a millionaire if she can meet one. I don’t want to talk about why or how that relationship will work because I think I’m too biased.
I used to watch the show because it just blows my mind that such rich guys have a hard time finding a girl
I can understand having matchmaking events for rich guys looking for pretty women who want to marry rich guys and having etiquette schools, but having a swimwear event at a matchmaking event- that just sounds wrong to me!
I hope those who sign up knows it is a gamble. How many rich guys are even available out there for all those girls to marry? How can one really instill all those skills and values in 30 hours?

I suddenly had a thought this week that I’m too behind in my drama watching, it’s not that db is keeping from watching dramas, or that I feel pressured to watch what everyone else is watching it’s just a sort of “my cup runneth over” feeling and I don’t want to feel that way about dramas. so I think a little break would help me stabalize.

*puts on fanfic writer hat* However, for your own peace of mind and ability to find and re-post later, I highly recommend posting this elsewhere. Since it’s a real people fic, such as we are on the OT, I agree with the livejournal/blogger/wordpress recommendations. I have an LJ and a blogger account, and they each have their pluses and minuses. The biggest bonus to getting an LJ is the ability to join community blogs and watch friend-blogs without having to do much work. So if there’s someone you’re particularly into, or some fandom/issue that whose comm you’d be interested in reading, if not joining, then LJ is the place to go. And the range is ginormous. I don’t belong to anything k-drama-y there, but I am part of several fanfic comms, gardening comms, money-saving, fashion, etc. If that’s not your interest, then either blogger or LJ should be equally fine for you.

Corrina, Corrina is one of my absolute favorite movies. I have probably watched it about 30 times, I think. I actually bought a video of it when it first came out and watched it over and over and over again!
I think it was one of Whoopi’s better movies. She was good in all her movies, but this one appealed to me more.
It had a good cast, whereas some of her other movies, she was really the only star and the cast wasn’t as good, or the writing wasn’t as good.
I loved Jenifer Lewis as Jevina, her sister. “Lurkin’ on the couch!”
I think part of my attraction to corrina, corrina has to do with her controlled performance. Usually she plays a mad, high-energy, kooky type. Have you seen the associate with her and diane wiest? I love diane wiest.

MJP unnie, Mom and I love Jenifer Lewis. She often plays very loud and brassy characters, but she’s excellent when she does more regular roles like Jevina.
Jumma…is The Associate the one where she impersonates a white guy to move ahead in business? In which case, I haven’t seen that one in ages. Whoopi has an older film that’s fair nuanced. She ends up as the guardian to her adopted sister’s white child (if I remember right) and it’s pretty nifty.

I’ve never tried livejournal or wordpress, only blogger and multiply. I made my travel blog in blogger, and my photo blog in multiply. Both are serving me well, and although I think wordpress is better than blogger, I haven’t found time to try it yet.
You might want to try Blogger first – coz it’s easy to use. And then you can migrate to another blog host later when you’ve outgrown it.

We are all good. MJP Hubby had this week of to teach 4th grade boys at VBS. He took Wee MJP to VBS in the 2′s and 3′s class, so I got a vaction too.
But the weather was too hot to do the things I planned on doing, so I have been mostly indoors. We went to the zoo (yes, again) but they have two new grizzly bear cubs. The mom was shot, in self defense by a deer hunter who came upon them by accident and she was just trying to protect her cubs because he scared the mama bear. So, the cubs were taken into custody and transported here to the zoo for their new home. They are sooo cute!!! Pics below.

I just wanted some opinions on a random topic.
So, hello! I’m Yuki, and I’ve been commenting around this site with that screen name for about 3 years. (I’m the one who wrote about turning her mother into a fangirl int he You’re Beautiful DVD set contest, if anyone remembers XD)
Here’s the story: Just yesterday, I realized there was someone else with the same screen name as myself. I think the other user is mostly active in the “You’ve Fallen For Me” -related posts. I haven’t been keeping up with the drama until now, so maybe that’s why I didn’t see this until now. And I mean this as no offense to her. Yuki is a pretty common name to use and this was probably just a coincidence. I merely wanted to use my story as an example.
But I just wanted to ask: Would you feel awkward if you saw a comment posted with the same name as you, but it wasn’t you? Especially comments that you may not agree with?
Would you change your screen name because of this? Would you hope that the other person changes it instead? Or would you think this isn’t a big deal at all and keep using the name you’ve been using?

Hi there! Oh, it’s funny because it so totally happens to a lot of Commentors. YY has a doppleganger. There are what, three Ani’s. I think maybe Viola has a double too.
I know some people have asked the others to change their handle, nicely of course. But I don’t know if the others ever did. YY for a while just clarified which person she was. I haven’t seen (at least to my knowledge) the other YY in a while.
I personally wouldn’t have a problem clarifying which MJP I am, if another were to come on the OT. I would probably just put it something like this:
MJP Wife of MJP Hubby Mother of Wee MJP
Then people would know which one I was.

I don’t think I have the guts to ask the other person to change their name, but what worried me was that some comments from the other user were a little offensive. I didn’t want people to misunderstand that it was me, so I decided to bring it up in the open thread for discussion.

hmm if there was suddenly another ahjummabunny I would change my screen name. but say 2 months ago I would be very upset about another ahjummabunny( I was still very attached to the name then) but I would probably change it anyway.
I think ahjummabunny is a very unique (and cute!) name, so if someone else were to use it, I’d think they are up to no good.
I thought about changing my name too, but I’m too attached to it T__T

Yeah, it makes me regret not making up a more creative name for myself in the first place. The thing is, I can’t say for sure that it’s copying, since the name I use is pretty common.

Funny you say that, b/c last week got a “tin” which is often what ppl end up calling me when I use my previous screen name. I dunno how I’d feel about it. I guess if I found them personally offensive I’d…I really don’t know. I’m an only child, so I’m very attached to anything I consider “mine”. Ridiculously so, I’m sorry to say, lol! But my aggressive is also passive, so I’d probably switch to something also comfortable (like cmrprindle

Happened to me too. I saw another “izzie” in a thread here and friends have replied to her thinking it was me. I had to comment then to clarify that it wasn’t me coz friends from Singapore got confused since I’m from the Philippines. This issue was discussed in the last OT as well.

No. It’s more than an attachment to the handle that I have. “Izzie” is close to my real name, and because of that I’m interacting as more than just an anonymous person behind a handle.

I do. It’s because of the attachment that I have to the handle and because I don’t want my friends here to confuse another person as me.

While I hope that the other “izzie” would change her handle, I won’t ask that of her. It’s not that big deal to make me make that request. Besides, if I’d ask, I’d ask again if another person uses “izzie” too as her handle.
What I did now, is that I added characters to my handle to hit two birds in one shot: I get to keep my handle while keeping the confusion at bay. I now type my handle as ~♥ iZzie ♥~. Now if someone else uses that too, then it proves a suspicion of mine: that someone has been messing with DBers lately by stealing commenters’ identities. (I may be wrong, but it seems the incidence of the double-handles has been increasing lately.) I hope that that’s not the case, but rather pure coincidence.

I agree. Since I’ve had the name to myself on DB for 3 years, I was surprised to see another one popping up suddenly.
As suggested by MJP and other DBers, I’ve decided to add a bit of clarification to my handle. I’m also too attached to the name to change it, but I don’t want others to confuse the two of us.
I haven’t been following the OTs lately so I wasn’t aware that this was happening to many others as well.

The doppelganger thing was creepy. I remember staring at the post, and thinking, Did I post that? MJP commented that I sounded weird. That gave me a nice warm feeling, that even if someone uses your name, friends would still sense something’s amiss. So I clarified who I was, and my doppelganger hasn’t appeared since. I think it’s probably a case of a newbie who didn’t know she was using my monicker. Ani had problems at that time too with her own doppelganger.
You know what worries me? It’s if a doppelganger starts a fight and trolls. Although JB and GF would know that it’s not you, still it would cause stress with all the explaining that would be required. What if the dissing happens in a thread that you didn’t visit? Omo!

So my internet’s been down for a couple of days, and it turns out we’ve been exceeding the bandwidth we paid for, lol. I feel bad, because I know it’s my k-media addiction that’s causing it. But I’ve been good, I swear! I’ve only been reading recaps, and haven’t downloaded that much music!
Finally caught up on my dramas this week… that is, I watched one episode of 49 Days. Is it possible to be cured of a k-drama addiction? Or is this just a phase and will I get over it once the next crack drama comes along?

I truly cannot believe that no one has yet to mention the scorchingly hot weather the U.S.A. has been having. I think we have finally joined the ranks of our other OT friends who have mentioned already having such weather.
Today it is 95.4 but feels like 108 degrees farenheit.
Yesterday it was the same and we couldn’t even have Wee MJP outside other than back and forth to the car, where the poor airconditioner is working so hard, but we couldn’t feel it.
So, what’s your weather today? Anyone have cool weather?
MJP, NYC woke up to 85 degrees and 70+ percent humidity, so that’s a no for us.
More’s the pity. I was going to go the Whole Foods-esque supermarket for lunch today (of all days not to have brought something!) but I couldn’t make myself walk down the extra 2 blocks. Ah well. Got a sandwich from Mrs. Yee instead and a chance to practice my komsamhamnida — even if I can’t spell it.

I am so proud of you! I wish I had someone to practice on. A few years ago, we had a Korean family to our house for Christmas dinner, pre my finding of Kdramas. I lost touch with them, since they moved. I was thinking today that it would be nice to have them over again. Sigh, I wonder if I can get their current address from a mutual friend?

Also from the same area! Today is slightly better than yesterday since I got to walk under some shade for most of my time outside and there was a nice breeze going. However, it was still so hot that when I walked through the sprinklers on the way to work (couldn’t take the heat anymore and it’s a friday!), I was completely dry in about 2 minutes. Yesterday, I was in a part of the city where there weren’t as many trees and I could barely breathe. I felt like I was being cooked. I don’t think i can bear to live anywhere that has such hot weather for more than 3 days straight.
I wish I can just walk around with an umbrella without looking weird. We need to bring parasols back into fashion!
However, it was still so hot that when I walked through the sprinklers on the way to work
