Park Min-young cast in drama, Chun Jung-myung to join her?

Actress Park Min-young is still on the set of her current drama City Hunter, but she’s already been cast in her next project. (By the by, doesn’t Park Min-young always star in the crack drama of the year, two years running? That’s some thunder. Perhaps she’ll be three for three before the year is even out.) She’ll be starring in the upcoming KBS drama Man of Honor, known also as the highly anticipated reteam of Baker King Kim Tak-gu‘s PD Lee Jung-seob and writer Kang Eun-kyung.

The drama is about two young people who overcome their fates and find love. Park will be playing a young woman who dreams of becoming a nurse like Florence Nightingale, even as she struggles with a harsh life. So not a light and fluffy drama, this one.

Not that I’d expect anything different from the Baker King team — that drama pretty much branded them as the overcoming-down-and-out-circumstances-to-achieve-your-dream drama people, though truthfully that drama drove me kind of nutty with its makjang story elements. Everything’s all Fate with a capital F and Destiny with a capital D, but the B didn’t stand for baking so much as Birth secrets. But for all its faults, Baker King was a ratings juggernaut, so they certainly know how to make a drama addictive.

The real question is who will play her leading man. Chun Jung-myung is reportedly up there as the top contender, which is just all manner of squee-inducing. So much pretty. But the lead role is still unconfirmed, so we’ll have to wait and see. My fear is that somehow this drama cocktail is going to end up Cinderella’s Sister crossed with Baker King, which might make me hurl. But there’s a chance it’ll be more triumph-of-the-human-spirit, less I-love-you-but-you-might-be-my-sister, right? RIGHT?

Man of Honor follows The Princess’s Man and premieres in October on KBS.

LOVE PIE!
Like her.
She has made a better impression on me with CH than SKKS, but she certainly isn't the best actress out there.

As far as their OTP, I can't see sparks. He needs someone flinty to work against, PMY is too soft. We will see.

I'm not sure... I mostly see/hear about her in movies. She seems like one of those Won Bin/So Ji Sub types who do dramas like once in 10 years then move on to make 10 movies in a year.

Those are two examples of how to (Baker King) and how not to (CS) do melodrama well.

She also modeled for Spris (or was it Everest? Ugh. Can't remember the name of the brand.) with Kim Kibum and Heechul of SuJu (2007? I was a big fan of both that time) and then with Lee Junki who is the greatest love of my life (same year, I think). Even back then I was already thinking, "This girl is dayum lucky she gets to work with the guys I like. I wanna be her. XDDD" So it seems her luck to be partnered with hot, popular guys continues. Who wouldn't be envious.

I think that her turn in City Hunter was an excellent one. She's sweet, open and emotive. I can totally see her taking on the role of a nurse-like character, and she's shown that she can hold her own against the hotness factor of her leading man.

well baker king was a high ratings magnet- bit diff and bit addictive to most ahjumma's- i watched the front and d end- but was bit disinterested in some episodes. CS was too melodramatic- that said it has a good cast- n actually do have its devoted followers. i agree that PMY seems to be the current 'female face of korea's drama' - i have nothing against her- she's such a cutie but not the most talented but all this opportunities will let her improve. OMAGAH THIS IS LIKE ONE OF THE GREATEST NEWS OF THE DAY!!!!

I'm totally up for the minyoung-jungmyung pairing, just because, yeah, like GF says, so much pretty, well much prettiness in a drama won't hurt, right?

i fell , hard, for CJM since CS and i always squee whenever i see PMY in city hunter, (though mostly because leeminhot was also in the screen, too) but she's awesome and she's going to stay that way.

with such great PD, writer, and cast, this will surely be one of the most anticipated dramas of the year, just the right drama to make up for my soon-to-be city hunter withdrawal syndrome. :)))))

I am probably in the minority here...but I actually like her as an actress. I frankly can't think of any scene in SKKS or CH where her character could have been portrayed better.

If I was ever disapointed with a scene in these two crack dramas (which happened rarely), it was because of where they made her character go ...like damsel in distress (not so good) instead of strong superfighter (great!).

For those who don't like her acting, can you think of an example?

0

I don't have a problem with her acting either. I don't think she draws attention to herself or plays her characters badly. I think it's just fashionable to label her a bad actress without even thinking about it.

She is indeed lucky to be cast with so many hot guys. Sounds like they have a good team going. The only question is does PMY have the ability to discard her Nana character completely to immerse in her new role in such a short time? Will the viewers have a short memory?

I want her job.

Of course, I'd have to be her age, too, 'cuz no hottie's gonna look at an old ahjumma like me, lol. I got kids older than both of those guys.

Hated CS. OK, "hated" might be a bit strong. I watched until the bitter end, but it left a bad taste for melodramas. To be fair, I watched Bad Guy before that. I don't mind drama if it has some comic relief every once in awhile. But, depressing melodrama....who needs it? I get enough with my melodramatic real sister, don't need it in my "escape tv".

I like PMY, I'd like to see her take on a meatier role, just to see what she's made of, but I like the characters she's played so far.

OK, rambled enough...got real life to attend to.

interesting... in korea, i think people actually consider park min-young a good actress, and chun jung-myung has been criticized for bad acting in his past couple of jobs (including cinderella sister).

i wonder if it's the difference between international fans and fans in korea who are fluent in korean and the culture. i have seen praise for park min-young especially for her clarity of voice and pronunciation when she says her lines, which they consider an important trait of "classic" vocal training in actors. on the other hand, you'll see a lot of criticism for actresses like choi ji-woo and yoon eun-hye for their "sloppy" pronunciation...

i think she had a lot of anti-fans before SKKS, but after the drama she won a lot of fans and praise.

i myself, LOVE park min-young. i thought she was superb in SKKS. not only for her clear voice, but she was pitch-perfect in portraying any of the emotions that each scene required.

in city hunter she was great in he beginning, but lately some of the scenes seem off to me. her character's relationship with yoon-sung/lee min-ho took a downturn, and while lee min-ho acts those scenes with a very solemn quiet demeanor, her energy is still a little high... so it kind of comes off as mismatched and awkward, i dunno. also she's not getting any good lines/scenes written for her.

anyways. i'm excited for park min-young being in another drama. i kinda hope it will be somebody else rather than chun jung-myung though... just can't get excited about him. how about song joong-ki?? now i could get excited about that! (although i think he's supposed to play a young king se-jong in another drama.)

Required fields are marked *

I'm not Korean but I think I and the rest of the international fans can still tell whether a korean actor/actress is good with acting, I mean, of course we can't tell if the pronunciation is right but other than that criterion, one can still tell whether an actor is being TOO cute or TOO melodramatic. Gong hyo-jin and jung ryeo-won have this natural feel in their acting and I think everyone, koreans and non-koreans alike can attest to that. As for min young, she still lacks that spark, she can't make me cry. Heck, gong hyo jin made me cry just by looking at cha seung-won!
Yoon sang hyun, cha seung won, hyun bin are some of the actors I can think of who are really really good. They can make you giddy or sad with one look! No need to talk.

Wow, that's long!

I agree with you, Mei. Park Min-young is quite serviceable, but she doesn't do anything for me. I've only just now gotten around to watching City Hunter for real, and Lee Min-ho is rocking my world like two hurricanes while Park Min-young leaves me cold. I don't think she's a bad actress. She might even be good. It's just that I don't connect with her. Like, at all. I don't feel anything from her, and any enjoyment I get out of her scenes usually stems from the fact that her character has good stuff to do on screen with other characters. You know, sometimes there are some actors that don't connect with some people. I'm one of those people and she's one of those actors. But even as I find myself rather stoic, I can appreciate that she's doing what she's supposed to do, and she's certainly expressive, so that's something. And she's definitely more successful than I am, so that's another thing. Plus, she seems sweet and adorable. Seriously, she's cute as a button! Korea loves their adorable, button-cute girls.

I figure that maybe I'm just biased against the girl because I'm in love with Lee Min-ho and wishing he were kissing me, but I still have a raging girl-crush on Shin Mina because of her amazing performance in My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho. I love her so hard, my goodness. Sometimes people get you in the heart. Sometimes they don't. And that's OK.

As for Chun Jung-myung ... yikes. Unfortunately I'm only familiar with him from Cinderella's Sister, and that just ruins him for me, even as I can tell that he's supercute. I'm not much for makjang. I get enough of that in my real life, so I tend to shy away from that on screen. If JB and Girlfriday recap this, I'll wait to see what they say since I usually agree with them, and I'm way, waaay too lazy to check out all of these dramas for myself. Heh.

i guess who you like as an actor is just subjective.

i just wonder about the language barrier when opinion seems to differ so much about actors on message boards here as opposed to in korea. for example, many people in korea think brad pitt and keanu reeves are great actors, but not so much here in the states.

0

Required fields are marked *

Not really. I don't think Brad Pitt & Keanu Reeves are great actors and I'm not from the States. The thing about having extra ordinarily good looks could also be a curse if (s)he wants to be recognised as a legitimate actor.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, she lacks the spark! I think maybe from a technical point of view she's a good actress: great pronunciation, appropriate facial emotions. But she doesn't really burst out of the screens and grabs you by the heart. It's not her fault though, because that kind of energy is only preserved for the very few. Emotional connection with the audience can be felt even with a language barrier.

0

Required fields are marked *

I second you that. Gong Hyo Jin? Gah you know some people said t me that SHE'S NOT AS BEAUTIFUL AS ANY OTHER KOREAN ACTRESSES but GAWD, her acting is... it's just hard to find other actresses who have that perfect skill of acting. She has talent that viewers deserve to enjoy.

Because these women are facking hilarious when they're at their wits' end with annoyance and/or homicidal rage. Of course, that would tick off a lot of readers, so maybe they shouldn't do that. I hope this drama will challenge her more. While PMY's character in CH is kickass, I don't think the role really challenges her or anything. I thought she did a muuuuch better with SKKS.

People rag on her acting, but it is always possible to improve. I will always take Sung Yuri as the prime example of a really bad actress who has improved enough to really get into character and make the audience feel for her. And PMY is still pretty okay/good, even if she isn't great.

Anyways, congrats PMY!!!!

I swear Park Min Young has the best agency ever, scoring so many juicy roles along with the hottest young male actors! I just wish her acting was A LOT stronger (she's usually pretty serviceable but her flaws are glaring when acting with someone as talented as Lee Min Ho).

LOL. AGAIN PMY? AGAIN? Aren't you tired already?
Coz I'm so tired of seeing you swarming on my screen these days. Allkpop and other sites are doing no good either with her excessive and sometimes not-too-important news.
Enjoy your popularity while you can, let's see if in the next decade you'll still be like this or not. :p
Not a big fan of CJM, so I'll definitely pass it.
NEXT topic please!!

I love Park Min Young. Liked her SKKS and liking her in CH. So happy for her that she's got another project lined up. :) :)

Wow, that will surely make her an A-lister. If a Kimtakgu-esque success is her third homerun.
