Kang Ho-dong to quit 1 Night 2 Days?

Nooooooooooo! What the hell is going on over there, KBS? Gagman and MC Kang Ho-dong has just announced that he plans to leave hit variety show 1 Night 2 Days, and has notified PDs that he’ll be wrapping up by the end of this month. He’s kidding, right? This is some sick, cruel joke?
The Happy Sunday PDs are reportedly scrambling to do everything they can to convince him to stay, which means the decision’s not really set in stone. This makes me wonder if it’s just a bit of a power play, especially now that Kang Ho-dong has gone solo with his own one-man agency and therefore stands to make a great deal more money if his contract gets renegotiated. Listen, I don’t care if you have to buy him one of those tiny islands or something. Just DO IT.
Kang Ho-dong has been the main MC on KBS’s Happy Sunday: 1 Night 2 Days since its start four years ago in August 2007. Since then it’s climbed to the top ratings spot on Sunday nights, which has long been the coveted power seat of variety shows. He reportedly wants to leave while the show is at the top, which sounds like entertainment doublespeak to me. Who goes out when they’re the top dog? Either he knows something we don’t know, or he’s more of a mastermind than Na PD is.
Everyone, including the head of the network, is scrambling to change his mind. Seriously, people — scramble harder. Who would scare Seung-gi and make him cry? What would Su-geun do without his weekly beating? Who would tell Jong-min and Tae-woong to do better? WHAT WOULD BABY BEAR DO WITHOUT PAPA BEAR?
Fix it, people. Or we will have words.

Problem is, nothing's been confirmed on either side. So for now, there are still stories streaming in that he's leaving, wants to take a break, etc. But no official statement from either party. Meanwhile Korean netizens are freaking OUT.
Either it's a massive media dust-up, or there's some rapid negotiatin' goin' on.
I certainly hope it's all a big ugly rumor. Please for the love of bacon!

Allkpop doesn't create most of their articles, they just translate it from actual Korean news sources which they credit at the bottom of every article..
So if anything, blame the Korean news sites for inaccurate info. (Unless Allkpop's translations are unreliable or something..)

Netizens have started an online petition to oppose HoDong’s departure from 1N2D. Some articles are reporting that HoDong has been on 1N2D (and Knee-Drop Guru) without a contract, and he had expressed intention to leave since last year.
KBS Entertainment Bureau Chief said, “There was no emergency meeting. And we did not meet with Kang Ho Dong. We will get organized and deliver KBS’s official stance through the PR Department shortly. Please wait a little longer.”

after i have read this issue/news(shocking news)
i felt kinda bad to hodong.. i honestly dont know the real story but i think as a viewer/fan/audience, 1n2d made him more popular comedian/mc/host...
and i think that makes him more proud/boastful that he likes that the PDs, management will beg him to stay...
Sugeun was mad at Kim C when he was informed THROUGH A PHONE CALL that Kim C is leaving!.
And now, for 4 years HE PLANS TO LEAVE THAT EASILY???

Perhaps he wants more money and fame has gone up his head. Should this be the case, then better for him to go and seek fortune elsewhere.
He is the main MC and couldn't imagine the program without him but leaving with such haste and being unloyal to a program which has created him and brought him to where he is now doesn't score points for me.
Come to think of it, most of the cast members have busy lives beyond 1N 2D: Seunggi & Taewoon don't need any introductions - both very successful actors. Sugeun & Jongmin too are busy peeps. What does Ho Dong have aside from being the MC & the bully of the show?
Let him go. Please don't buy him an island. The most one could get him is a cup of coffee to wake him up and get his mind on line. The show is successful not because of him alone but due to the joint efforts with 4 others. 1N 2D will continue thriving without him, and that's a fact.

Hmmm....I think you're seriously underestimating the talents and abilities of Kang Hodong. While I love and appreciate every single member of 1N2D, I think it's irrefutable that Kang Hodong is the center and bedrock of the show. I guess you don't watch many Korean variety shows because Kang Hodong is generally busier than all the other cast members. There are 7 days in a week and he's working to the max with 4 popular shows and 5 days of filming. (I know Seungki was the male lead in dramas twice, which means he was insanely busy during those periods, but when he's not filming, the only other thing he's active in is helping KHD emcee Strong Heart and promoting/advertising. Most celebrities have these on and off cycles of promotions, including singers, such as Eun Jiwon and Kim Jongmin. EJW, KJM, and LSG might participate in other variety shows, but they don't have quite as much responsibility and preparatory work to do as KHD, in my humble opinion). Kang Hodong is the main host for Strong Heart, Star King, and Golden Fishery. All of these shows have had strong, stable ratings, and I honestly think that it is due in significant part to Kang Hodong's abilities. Presently there is no one that can completely carry on his roles in those shows.

Like what DBSK said, have you ever thought about how much work it would be for him to juggle all these duties and shows that he has to host? And he has a wife as well to take care of and be with and it is not our place to judge Ho Dong on his decision, not even if we have all the details. I personally don't think its a "Give me more give me more situation". He's done this show for 4 years and its been the top show for quite awhile now so if he had wanted to leave while the iron was hot he could have done so earlier. I'm more in line of the thinking that he is physically unable to juggle all his duties anymore so he has to sacrifice one of his many jobs.

uh, saying that 1N2D "created him and brought him" to where he is now is an exaggeration. KHD was already big w/o 1N2D. if anything, this show is popular due to his help. and he's much busier than the others. LSG is the only one who might be as busy as KHD but even then, he gets to take breaks when he's not doing dramas. KHD's the main host for so many other shows AND he has a family to take care of. his shows air weekly, he doesn't get a break like the others.
calling him disloyal is a bit much. you don't know if he has some personal reasons for doing this. he can't just stick with this show forever just because it contributed to his career. it's been how many years? he's stayed long enough to prove his loyalty. like others, i don't think that he should leave the show but i think it's a little out of line to accuse him of being disloyal

There are those who would think that my thoughts are a bit harsh but I cannot imagine it any other way.
If he did want to leave due to personal or other work related reasons, i do think it proper to have given his employer/network enough notice to make his departure as smooth for everyone as possible. By everyone this includes his devoted fans, avid followers of the show, and the network itself.
One cannot just say "my time is over and I am leaving end of the month". If this is not being disloyal and hasty then perhaps you can suggest a better term.

Honestly, we don't really know the truth, so I think it's better for us not to blame or judge Ho Dong. As far as I know, Ho Dong is busier than any of the guys. He is the main MC for 4 weekly shows, the shooting for all these shows are either weekly or fortnightly and as the main MC, of course he has to do all the works. It's not only physically draining but also emotionally.
Don't ever question his loyalty! He missed his son's birth because they were in the middle of 1n2d filming. I admire his professionalism, even Su Guen left the filming when his wife gave birth and he didn't attend the viewers' trip phone call when his second son was born.
And I honestly respect him (even though yes sometimes I hate it when he screams out loud to the other members and hit MC Mong in the past). When his team won the race, Su Guen and him could go home early. But what did he do? He stayed! And the members, even the viewers could feel the void. No other member could ever replace him.
I know they should adjust his schedule better, when he filmed 1n2d waterfall special, his strong heart shooting finished at midnight. And the members started 1n2d shooting the next day at 4 in the morning. Being the main MC, of course he had to do the prep works (more than the other members had to do theirs). Seung Gi said that Ho Dong barely got any sleep, but he had to go from Seoul to Jejudo; then few hours later back to Seoul; then go to Gangwondo, then the next day climbed one of the highest mountain in Korea.
He's 42 years old, so of course he's not as fit as the others; but he always does his best. If he wants to leave, he's free to do so. But he has proven his loyalty to 1n2d over the past 4 years.
I read on several media that he has told the PD team about him leaving several months ago, even before Seung Gi. PD Na and his team usually kept it as a secret, remember about chaotic Seung Gi's 1n2d leaving rumor? PD Na claimed that he never heard about it, even though his agency said that they have discussed it with him. And when the official statement was released, PD Na admittedly said that they have indeed discussed it.
So I won't take any news from allkpop as a trustworthy news, will wait for the official confirmation from Ho Dong himself.

I dont intend to panic.. Yeah, i dont so i'll just focus on the fact that aside from being an entertainer, celebrities are all business people. This is show business after all. Negotiation is inevitable now that KHD has already started his one man agency. I hope he gets a better deal with KBS so that everything goes well. 1n2d's reign is here to stay! Who would want to believe that Ho dong wants leave a winning show?! Negotiation is the answer. It's a win-win situation for all :D

I'm starting to feel the grip of panic. This can NOT be happening. I seriously despaired, moaned, bewailed, pined, was heartbroken and remiss for at least a full year when Family Outing was cancelled. The advent of Running Man has somewhat aided my healing and recuperation process. But I'm still quite saddened whenever I remember the good times we had with Game Devil, Chunderella, Madame Lee, Dumb and Dumber, Kim Kookjong, and all the others TT_TT
I don't think this is a power play because that doesn't seem to be Kang Hodong's character. He seems to be a generally upright and responsible person. He always plays by the rules in 1N2D and respects the P.D.'s. As a former sportsman, he has an honor code that he follows quite dedicatedly.
I think he is feeling drained after being the life, spirit, and energy of the show for so many years. I can see why he would want to leave while the show is still on the top, because that's kind of how Yoo Jaesuk exited Family Outing, while it was still had the general good will of the public. Once FO ratings were at a slump and the cast was feeling a bit tired, it seemed to be a better idea to start afresh than to try and revive the show. I guess overnight shows require a lot of commitment and it's hard to maintain the original cast members and keep the energy/contentment/motivation alive.
I honestly think 1N2D is still far from a slump. But there has been some talk about the show getting repetitive/old. And the actress special only managed to get ratings in the teens. The ratings are not as high as it has been in the past. And there has been cast member changes, such as with MC Mong, Kim C, etc.
The end of 1N2D will be the end of another great era in the world of variety TT_TT

The ratings for the actress special was actually much much higher than the teens (I think their peak rating for the special was something like 40). I don't think 1n2d has gone below 20 in a long time (single rating, not a combined one with Qualities of Men which is the official 'Happy Sunday' rating). For a show so popular for so long, I think ratings in the teens for them would be a big concern.
That said, they've definitely had lower ratings than usual (low 20's) since I am a Singer moved slots, so maybe there is some concern about staying on top. Maybe I'm biased with my outsized love for the show, but I think if Hodong stays they'll be able to 'overcome' the competition coming from MBC with relative ease. There is so much affection for the show, but it does seem like without Hodong anchoring 1n2d, it can't be sustained.

Losing Ho Dong is shocking news at this stage but give it a few weeks and he will be forgotten, like most things.
If I were him, I'd enjoy the limelight & the popularity whilst it's still there.
There will always be someone funnier & better and in Korea, rest assured talents are in abundance just waiting to be picked.

Yeah, I remember that. Even the PDs and the editors were bored to death. As for the remaining cast members, they said the same thing.

That's just the show I was thinking of! It was such a mess when he and Suguen left. Awkward. Dull. Looked a bit manual and robotic.
All the members of 1N2D are lovely in their own right but I feel if anything goes wrong it's Hodong who will fix it. Same way he keeps the flow going, sets up jokes for the others, etc.
He might not be EXTREMELY well liked like some of the other cast members but he reminds me of a mother who goes around doing so much of the "behind the scenes" little things that might go underapreciated at the time...but then you remember all of the little things she/he does and want to burst into thankful tears.
It would be a disaster if he left.

I shall admit that I do watch 1N 2D primarily because of Seung Gi & recently due to Taewoon too.
I am impressed on how 2 actors who are popular in their own rights would find the time to be in a show like 1N 2D which is not only physically gruelling but at most times take them to their non-comfort zones. They do remind us that despite the big pay checks & huge fan base, they are human too.
Very humble and their hearts are in the right place.
Let Ho Dong go....

This is actually very shocking news to me. I don't watch 1 Night 2 Days on a weekly basis, but I agree that Ho Dong is the foundation of the show. Without him, it would be a matter of time before the show falls apart. It will be sad to see such a great variety show end.
Anyways, I can't really see him leaving the show, but no one ever knows. Also, I don't think it's him trying to get more money... he just doesn't seem like that type of person.

Seriously, he's the heart of 1n2d show. There are a few moments when the boys have to be the main MCs without Ho Dong( when he loss in the games) and it's really awkward and incomplete :(

This is truly a shocking news! Is it true that Ho Dong doesn't have any contract with 1n2d? He's the core of 1n2d, yes 1n2d is about its 6 members, but without Ho Dong, I don't think the show can go on.
I'm still missing Kim C n MC Mong, and now there's a chance that Ho Dong will leave too? :(
But brutally speaking, Ho Dong shouldn't broke the news out of the blue like this. And please choose the right time! Today's Koyote's new single was released, can't he let Koyote n Jong Min be the highlight instead of him?
