Makgulli, the drama: Shaken, not stirred

javabeans: Hey, did you hear? Makgulli drama!

girlfriday: An entire drama about makgulli? Is it not gonna suck, like Cinderella’s Sister did?

javabeans: Not if we watch it drunk.

girlfriday: Truer words, about most dramas in fact. What’s the story about?

javabeans: Dunno. Makgulli, apparently. No, I’m not being a smartass. That’s all the article says. Oh, and it’s 16 episodes.

girlfriday: Sixteen episodes about the merits of rice wine? So it’s a really really long liquor commercial?

javabeans: A commercial with product placement opportunties? What does that become?

girlfriday: A CF masquerading as a drama, masquerading as a CF?

javabeans: What do you call a drama with an identity crisis?

girlfriday: I Am Legend.

javabeans: Touche. So, you gonna watch Tak-bae-gi? (Apparently that’s the working title, another word for makgulli. I’m like, why not just call it Makgulli?)

girlfriday: It’s ‘cause it’s an old country drink, right? So it has different regional names, like dong-dong-ju? Or is that just a brand?

javabeans: I think you’re right. But makgulli is the standard word, no? I guess it’s like calling a drama Firewater rather than Whiskey. (By the way? I’d watch that drama.)

girlfriday: Sign me up for that drama. I think Santa would get dibs on recaps though.

javabeans: That ornery bastard? Sigh. I guess so. You don’t fight with Santa.

girlfriday: How can we turn this drama into a drinking game? Do we know anything about the plot? Drink every time someone cries?

javabeans: I don’t think there IS a plot yet. Would it be a bad idea to drink every time they drink?

girlfriday: I like your style. (And yes, it’s a bad idea. I want this on the record for when you blame me later.)

javabeans: But then you’ll have to confront the fact that you have it in writing, and yet still did it. What does that say?

girlfriday: That I am easily led astray by friends with bad ideas?

javabeans: Great! I have LOTS of those!

girlfriday: I know. It’s pretty much the bedrock of our friendship. I entertain your nutty schemes.

javabeans: Every good partnership needs visionary leader to lead…visually.

girlfriday: Yeah but I’m still not going to wear that Robin costume.

Oh you guys just crack me up sooooo much.

In all seriousness though, who'd watch a 16 ep long CF?

I would if they cast Lee Min-ho, Jung Il-woo, Yoo Ah-in, Kim Soo-hyun, and Song Joong-ki as the leads.
:)
I don't care if it has no plot at all. :)

do count me in...a drunk, shirtless, lip biting Kang Ji Hwan is all I need to watch a plotless drama-like CF!!!! Of course, he leads the pack of my boy toys... Lee Min Ho, Jung Il Woo, Song Joong Ki, No Min Woo,Kim Bum and Kim Soo-hyun...Yaaaay this halmoni's dream cast indeed!!!! and please there should always be a shower scene...RAWR

thanks for this treat... playing with my perverted imagination is the BEST way to treat my Alzheimers...hihihi hik...

Maybe they could be drinking in the shower? OK, too weird maybe. But I could watch Kang JiHwan do nothing but stare back at me. Especially if he's shirtless, lol. As my gramma used to say about Robert Redford (back in the old days when he was young and cute) "that boy could park his slippers under my bed any day!"

Oh, and Yoo Ah-In, Cha Seung Woo (minus facial hair and tattoos)....

And, if there isn't too much acting involved: Song Seung Heon, Yoochun, Hyun Joong and.....there are probably too many in this category to mention.

A girl can dream, right?

Love the way you all think :)

I'd watch a 16 ep drama with no plot if we have we Min-ho, Jung Il-woo, Yoo Ah-in, Kim Soo-hyun, and Song Joong-ki and KIM BUM drunk stripping even if there is NO PLOT.

0

haha love this idea. would totally watch this drama just for them. :D

0

Didn't they do that with wine and No Min-woo?

Although a star studded cast would only improve the lack of plot, right?

I apologize having not seen that Cass commercial before but yeah, 16 eps of that? I'm so down for it. Also if somehow we can get Jang Geun Suk with his eyeliner too, it'd be great. And on that note, we should get Mr. Creepy from CH--it'll be an guyliner extravaganza!

what does makgulli taste like? sweet?

Required fields are marked *

makgulli has a taste I describe as malty when shaken: it is mildly sweet with a taste like rice soaked in water. It isn't an unpleasant rice taste, it's starchy, malty but lightly starchy, malty. Unshaken it tastes like saki. There are many varieties available. I've had traditional ( as traditional as a $3.00 bottle can be) and flavored and carbonated. The carbonated grows on you.

There is a 2001 Hong Kong TVB Drama, Country Spirit, with wine making as the back story. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_Spirit

Actually, TVB decided the predecessor of Country Spirit to be season 2 of a 1995 drama, called it Plain Love II

by makgolli you mean the middle episodes of couple of fantasy? If that show wasn't a makgoli advertisement I don't know advertisements! Meanwhile, that was one of my favorite parts of that drama. I loved to see anna drinking makgoli it sent me straight out to get some. I hope the drama really takes it cues from anna and just feature vignettes of people like anna.

HaaaHaaaHaaaaHaaa, funny post, you two! Rice wine is such a riveting topic and ......Wait.....what?!?! I thought the two of you were supposed to be deep into the devious planning of taking down and ambushing Lee Min-ho when he least expected it?!

Does this makgulli post mean that the two of you just gave up on LMH and figured that you couldn't post bail, if caught?

Disappointed, am I. Disappointed.

Makkoli is technically a beer since it is brewed. What most people get outside Korea (as well as in big cities) is pasteurized to stabilize the drink and make it last more than a week. Local varieties are not pasteurized and are usually consumed within a week. So, why is this important, you might ask. Well, a whole lot in terms of taste. The unpasteurized makkoli contains live latic acid bacteria that continues to mature the drink even after bottling. Some people argue that the live bacteria makes makkoli a healthy drink. What distinguishes taste between makkoli from one brewery to another, especially smaller ones, is the yeast. Big makkoli plants use mass produced yeast whereas local ones tend to use yeast that contain bacteria most prevalent in the local air and soil. Similar concept as why sourdough taste from San Francisco tastes different than those made elsewhere.

K dramas are quickly becoming Korea's travel/tourist industry ad men! I have never wanted to visit a country as much as Korea.

I'd honestly pay for a tour of KDrama homes, bridges and parks! LOL

I've already removed Greece from my list!

omg, SO TRUE. I swear, I haven't read a single book on Korea, didn't learn much about it in school, and only know a few Koreans - yet, from watching dramas, I've decided that I want to at least visit if not live there. lol. I'm even learning Korean for this very purpose!

Very, very interesting =)

I've never seen these pictures of Makgulli before & I thought it should be soy milk may be delicious BUT I didn't know that it's alcohol nor wine, either!! O_o Well, makgulli don't seem like it's exactly as alcohol nor wine to me, but like as soy milk, lolz. I am VERY curious to try to do that, ofc! I don't mind that I'd want to taste this makgulli, kekeke.
OH! I am not kind of person who wants to drink the alcohol, no way.....cuz' it's from Korean cultural, yups. ^__^

LOL great post!! You don't mess with Santa, man. Santa'll CUT YA! :-)

Just as long as this purported drama doesn't turn into "Cinderella's Sister 2," I'm down with it. And I agree with ajbny who said the carbonated version grows on you -- just perfect on a hot summer day. I'm fortunate to have three Korean supermarkets within spitting distance of my apartment, and makgulli is always on sale. Score!

And if this drama also involved hot shower guys... well, um... just well... :cough: I would have to clear viewings with my eye doctor first. Just sayin'...
