*butts in line and clinks glass* Happy 200th OT, yorobun! To commemorate this momentous occasion, I hope you’ll join me in creating a little Lovefest for DB, JB, GF, and the other DB bloggers in this week’s Open Thread.
I took a gander at the 100th OT– it was filled with lots of nice “Congratulations and thank you!” messages, but the messages that I found the most meaningful were the ones in which people shared a couple of details about how DB impacts their lives, or what it is that they most love or appreciate about DB. Our co-bloggers extraordinaire have given us so much– so let’s each take a moment to express our love and gratitude this week. A bit later on, I think Bourbon is gonna be setting up her virtual pojangmacha again, and I’ve brought plenty of glasses and beverages to get us started in the meantime, so I invite you to make a toast (or a drunken confession), give props, write a limerick, or whatever else you feel inspired to do to join in the celebration. I should upload a picture of my cat, she’s old and partially paralyzed. She was a stray, she has two pellet in her body, one lodged in her spine and the other in her abdomen. She was captured at 2 to 3 years old. So who know what happened to her. I have this one picture of her hiding under the Christmas tree.

I think the awesome thing is JB and GF didn’t have a site announcement to begin this celebration.
And it isn’t a -versary of the beginning of the site, it is a milestone for the commenters on this site, which then only emphasizes their generosity of server use and hard drive space.
Don’t be overly concerned about the lack of breathing holes for our captives. Don’t we want them to be a little groggy and disoriented until we’re able to get them tied to the bed(s)?

I make this Italian seafood sauce that you would probably love, then. And, no I don’t eat it, I just cook it.
I can’t really say the recipe, because I just fly by the seat of my pants with it and it always changes, but I get compliments from my husband and my BFF’s husband, they both love my sauce. When I make it, I always make enough for two households and then split it with my BFF.
I’ve unwittingly eaten octopus. I saw a drama where the girl was meeting her prospective father in law and he loved live octopus and she claimed to like it too and when she ate it she gagged and he of course jumped to the k-drama conclusion. I love seafood and I wish I could eat it more often. I go to the chinese superm. and I look longingly at the mollusk and crabs and fish. I hate to eat them after they are frozen, I won’t kill anything before eating it and 2lbs of mollusk is a lot for one person.

How Make Your Very Own Homemade Abs-Juice:
1. Knock Siwon out gently.
2. Lay him out gently on bed with arms outstretched.
3. Remove his shirt gently.
4. Locate abs.
5. Locate pores on abs.
6. Get ready an empty glass.
7. Squeeze gently on abs. Take care not to pull out fine hairs sticking out on pores.
8. Abs-juice will flow out first in a trickle, then in a steady stream.
9. Massage gently in between squeezes to enhance flow.
10. Serve Abs-juice in a tall glass with ice cubes, honey and a dash of lemon juice.*
*Best to consume within 1 hr for freshness.

Actually, one of the first times me and my friends had it, we wondered if it was in fact chicken rings that were kinda tough. I can’t imagine trying to eat the live stuff. I’ve seen it done on tv. It looked kinda crazy.

I was one of the crowd that found Dramabeans in my search for recaps for You Are Beautiful, and although I ended up not really liking YAB as much as I did in the beginning, I found the recaps here fun and witty and the next thing I know, I was catching up with as much of DB previous posts as possible. I even found the gem that was samsooki defending his love for My Love Patzzi (one of the kdramas one my first few kdaramas list). I love being a Beanie, and I am grateful for the wonderful read from jb and girlfriday. Sometimes they make the drama better than the actual drama itself. HAHAHA. Yes I agree! I’m totally addicted to this site too. I found it when I first got into the new wave of post-Winter Sonata Kdramas, through Boys Over Flowers (I know..). But I fell in love with this site after reading The Woman Who Wants To Marry recaps- it was simply lovely.

Me too. Sometimes I rub my hands together in total glee and clap silently (it can be done silently… if you only touch the tips of your fingers and bottom of your palms together.) Once my boss caught me holding my stomach and laughing (again silently… i dont even know where i learnt to do that) and I lied about not feeling too well.

what is wbds about??? I’m sooo confused. my first sageuk was king geunchogo and the background information was provided in voice-overs. I didn’t realize that was a present from hananim. I’m okay with doing research but I haven’t been able to find anything in english (I haven’t searched in korean though).
Actually WBDS is not too difficult to understand. I dont think they really adhere to proven history, atleast of what little i know of korean history. WBDS (so far) is about crown prince sado’s desire to defeat the qing by marching directly to the capital using a map created 100 years ago. The thing is the map is hidden (and i wont tell you where unless you’ve already watched ep 5). It’s kind of cool, but to tell you the truth, i really only watch it because yoo seung ho is really cool in that as the tortured black clad assasin. Plus the fight scenes are kind of cool too. and ofcourse the assassin head, Chun, is soo amazing.
yeah chun is great! I saw up to episode 5 kok chong ma. I think the fight scenes are really great in sageuks in general. I think the reason why I feel lost is that none of the things that are happening seem to be worth anything. But it’s too soon I guess.

WBDS is about the crown prince Sado (the father of one of Korea’s greatest Kings, Yi San/Jeonjo) and his murder. He was locked up by his father King Yoenjo in a rice chest (This actually happened, I know shocking.) He fell victim to a conspiracy hatched by the Queen (not his real mother) and the Norons (political group like republicans, etc). His dad killed him because he felt that his son would kill him and take over the throne and bring shame to the royal family.
In WBDS they seem to imply that the Norons did not support the Crown Prince’s dream of the northern expansion (conquering china) because it would mean that the royal family would gain more power while the norons would loose power as the territory expands. So WBDS is about stopping the crown prince.
Other saguek dramas like Yi San (should watch this really good if you want to know how tough the political climate was) have said that the crown prince Sado fell was killed when he found out there was a plot to overthrow the king. The Norons and the Queen mislead the King and made it seem that Sado was after the throne rather than trying to stop a coup de tat.
There was a book written by Crown Prince’s wife where she goes into detail in the political climate of the time. Some people think Sado also had a mental disease that is why he didn’t tell his dad about the coup being planned

WBDS is in it’s own little alta-verse which is entertaining as can be, and I adore it, but should not be confused with reality in any way, shape or form.
There is no known cure for WBDS addiction. None. Sorry. You will have to just sit back and enjoy the high.

I am only watching MyungWol the Spy, and I started PtB only yesterday…
oh wow! and… oh wow again! i watch around 3 hours of kdramas a day and i still cant get more than 3 or four dramas a week. what am i doing wrong? sleeping too much maybe? oh drat! Is zenkai girl good? I was watching Ikemen Desu Ne, but i found that the korean one was better made. I think the actors miss out on some very key expressions that the korean cast made. (Like the scene where she sings the song in the studio). I dont think its an acting problem so much an editing problem maybe?
I started watching Warrior Baek Dong Soo and Ji Chang Wook is so funny as Baek Dong Soo. His character is really different from The Sons of Sol Pharmacy House. Love it!

this is actually a response to your list of dramas that you’re watching. WOW!! totally impressed!! i have this annoying difficult certification exam next month so nowadays i either read recaps on DB or just watch an episode….yes, AN episode of Goong these days (altho i may drop it since i feel like shooting myself with the non-conflict on the show) and not to forget that Ramadan is taking up a lot of time in any case!! I am soo excited once that exam’s done and i can marathon K-dramas again!! yayyyyy!!
I watched Sapuri and it was kinda bad!! heh The lead actress was soo stiff….made me giggle!! I remember watching the show as I was so impressed with Kame in NwP and THnK so decided to give it a try. But, I wish there would be a Korean adaptation of THnK provided they maintain the starkness of the original dorama and not glossify the storyline and the setting. Lee Min Ho would make an awesome Hiroto….if Kame was totally drool-worthy due to his performance i imagine LMH will be sooo bloody good!!

Hayate the Combat Butler is cute and campy, but not overly done.
Park Shin Hye’s voice is dubbed and to some that is a big turnoff. If you can get over that, then you will probably find it charming. George Hu, Tia Li, and the rest of the cast do a very good job, in my opinion.
But, if you are looking for something that is super _____ (you fill in the blank) then this may not be the one for you. Unless you understand Mandarin or have read the manga, I would advise you watch it English subbed, because sometimes the things that happen visually need explanations. (ie. Why does that guys eyes glow blue when his boss yells his name? How can he run so fast? What is that guy doing… dancing or what?)
They are just starting to get to the romantic part of the drama, so there is plenty of time to watch it and still get current.

Combat butler is really funny for the first few episodes (I’ve only watched the first three so far). In LMAO. A bit over the top but in all the best ways. I have never watched the anime, I cannot compare. I easily overlook strange dubbing too. So, good times.

I watched Otomen too and loved it! I think I’ve watched it three times now. One of the great things about the J dramas is that they are very compact and easier to marathon.
I finished up Sapuri in a marathon last night. Friday and Saturday are my marathon nights. I’ve got Ikemen Desu Ne #5 loading up on Tudou right now, but nothing else, so a good dose of Otomen sounds just about right!

Yup, I love how they linger on the sweet moments. And its rare to watch a drama where they focus on the courtship between the main couple. Most trendies are about a bickering couple who fight their attraction and only get together in the last episode. You’ve Fallen For Me feels real in that aspect, and I love that!

A friend and I were discussing how we “hold grudges” against female actors who play the “bad guys” i.e. the “other woman” roles. Like Uee. After her role in You’re Beautiful, we don’t want to watch her in anything else. I know that’s not fair to her, but it’s how we feel.
And to show how shallow and hypocritical we are, when it’s a male actor, we can “forgive” him for being a bad guy and thoroughly enjoy him in another drama!

Why is In Hee still stuck playing the second female lead in this awesome drama? if by any chance she gets to have a leading role, then I might remember her name, at least. Please tell me that she has had a major role before.
the problem with inhee, I just saw her in president too is that even when she’s playing a much saner character is her face still makes inhee expressions! Honestly if she didn’t look like she was smirking and planning to seduce lee min ho all the time, I wouldn’t hate her guts. I’m trying to think who other than uee I’m still holding a grudge against, but I can’t think of anyone. I think the trend is usually to pair those baddies up with second lead men, and if I see the baddies convincingly play good guys when I don’t expect mind you, ( uee in birdie buddy is too obvious) I can get over it.
For me, if an actress a) plays annoying second fiddle and b) is an actress who doesn’t act well or has annoying characteristics, they are forever dead to me. And they have to be both, LOL.
Examples: the actress who played Hee Jin in MNIKSS, and Kim Jung Hwa, who commits the terrible sin of going up against both Kim Sun Ah and Chae Rim and having the whiniest voice imaginable – because of her, I can never watch 1% of Anything…
err none of those people are in 1%. are you thinking of han hye jin? she’s not annoying in 1% and when were jung ryu won and chae rim in the same drama?
In Hee bot Wang Ji-hye was in 1%.
I think you can erase 2nd lead female hatred for Jung Ryeo Won if you watch What Planet Are you From with Kim Rae Won.

Well most of the PtB characters are a little bit, a lot, immature. That what makes the show so hilarious.
I agree! I even feel a bit bad for her character in PtB. It’s like she’s “the little engine that couldn’t”. I just want to slap her on the back and say “don’t worry. try harder next time. You can do it!” while for other second female leads, I tend to watch to slap them in the face.
You should see Wang Ji Hye in the acclaimed Hyun Bin starrer, Friend, Our Legend. Although the story revolved mainly around the male leads/second leads, I think she can be considered the female lead there. And she did very well, too.
In hee bot was the evil one I loved to hate, but she was so crazy obsessive and a little bit physcho that I couldn’t take her seriously or really hate her without ending up laughing hysterically at her antics… I think around the time PT was airing the phrase ‘he’s just not that into you,’ was really popular. So basically I love to hate her, but I don’t actually hate her. I hope she isn’t evil in PTB and instead just funny. She was in ep. 3.
I find her to be hysterical in PtB. She’s doing a terrific job and is showing that her character is more than a one-dimensional bitch. Episode 3 really showcased both her and Jaejoong. Love them both (well, Jaejoong for different reasons…).
I still think of her as “In-Hee Bot”

I do the exact same thing. When I heard that she has two shows playing now, I’m like “Meh.”
But it’s different for Yoo In Ah because I first saw her in Secret Garden and she place a nice girl role.
But the My Princess, Yoon Joo Bot (played by Park Ye Jin), I do not like her. Sad to say, because she did a great job being so cold and evil and unrelenting. But she is now in my mind typecast as being such a character. The only thing she can do to redeem herself is to play the female lead role of a really good Kdrama.

Maybe I forgot parts of What Happened in Bali, but didn’t Park Ye jin’s character get completely played by Jo In sung’s. I don’t remember her being particularly nice, but she was burned bad by him.

Wasn’t Yoon Joo Bot (Park Ye jin) in What Happened in Bali? She was pretty sympathetic in that since she completely got played by Jo In sung’s character.
Also, I’m so glad I saw Seo Hyo rim in Worlds Within before I saw her in Scent of a Woman were she is so mean and evil.
I actually have a soft spot for her because she was at the mercy of choi myung gil in hateful but once again/again my love. I mean park ye jin. I haven’t seen my princess, but I read the recaps and her character reminded me very much of choon hyang’s rival.
it’s also not fair that the second female leads/bad guy roles are written to make them 2-dimensional cackling witches while when there is a baddie second male lead role- he’s written with much more sympathy and backstory which inform us about his motives and which gives him room to show a range of acting.
I enjoyed Uee in her You’re beautiful role. I love how her character was pretty straightforward with her bad attitude and never really got the upper hand for long and Taekyung had always been aware of her real self. Regarding Uee, I think a lot of people think she’s overrated and overhyped, which may explain why they don’t want to watch her.
There are a few second female villain leads gaining positive attention in later dramas- think Kim Tae Hee (Stairway to Heaven), Kim So Yeon (All About Eve), and Lee Da Hae (Sweet 18)

Frankly there was a slight sour taste in my mouth when I read the news that Kim Bum was cast in Padam Padam, but I happened to enjoy sour stuff! the confusion appeals to me.

Hehe. This week was the first time i actually got ROYALLY drunk. Not to turn into an alcoholic, mind you, just to celebrate getting a brilliant GRE score.
I’ve discovered I am a happy drunk. I sing, i dispense advise, i giggle, call friends i haven’t spoken to in years and tell them how AMAZING they are, and say hello to random people and engaging them in conversation. Its mortifying the next day when you have said random people coming up to you and saying hi, all while you’re super hung over and don’t even remember their name, as a one time experience, it is INCREDIBLY fun. Don’t think i have the liver to do that again though.

Well, the thing is, I’ve given it twice so far. First time around i got 1440, which is a great score in itself, but problem was, i had a major panic attack so I wasn’t satisfied with it. You know how it goes, the whole world can try and console you, but if you know somethings not right, it never stops bothering you. For me, this was not the me i wanted to be seen as, on my college applications. So, for reasons unfathomable to most of my peers, i gave it again.
1530!! Though i did panic again, and i know this is not the best i could do, i think it’s time i make my peace with the fact that unless i do something about my panicking problem, I’m always going to have to deal with that residual disappointment. And that’s a lesson for the bigger picture.

Do you have any Mucinex or equivalent? My girlfriend swears by the stuff, but the one time I took it, my head felt like it was going to explode. I just tough the coughs out or take Tussin DM (equivalent to Robitussin). Even that stuff makes my head feel crazy.
I sure hope you feel better soon. I prescribe lots of Kdramas and sleep to get you back and on your feet again!

When I get a bad cough it’s much the same. No one can stand to be around me b/c I bother them, too. *sends tissues and menthol-y stuff*
for a cough I recommend, wine, aspirin and oysters raw or cooked with lime/lemon juice, spicy sesame seed oil, cilantro or any other herb you like. oysters soothe the throat and contain zinc.
I hope with the weekend, you can get more rest! It must be frustrating. You try to rest because you’re sick, but because you’re sick, you can’t rest! Get well soon!
Oh! queencircles…I dunno wear you are, but if you can find them Cold-Eeze throat lozenges will help sooth your cough and cut the cold down faster. I personally prefer the cherry.

all i can say is i have no complaint about the performance.. the singing.. the ending song with KY, K(behind the scene) and S back up voice.. S guitar solo with the WF… it’s amazing.. and KY oh how i love him… his voice, his abs and his guyliner… all good…
personally, i was a little disappoint on K’s decision at the end to stay behind the scene.. and how emotional she was while giving up her chances to be on stage.. but I applause for her unselfishness..
love seeing how S is so caring and loving K… once K starts singing.. S knew immediately and tried to look for her while performance… i was so touched by him…
next week is the finale.. and i don’t want it to end.. i love this drama.. and all the characters… even the mean girls and HJ not T.. but he did turn around at the end…

It was completely unexpected for me, but then as it was happening I realized it was actually a really cool way of getting back to the show’s original premise, so now I rather love the ending
I was mad because I don’t think is fair for the public and for K. I understand her decision, but I don’t think it really help HJ by doing that. HJ will have plenty of chances after her surgery and by K singing for her is like saying HJ is not good enough to sing for her self and K not good enough to perform. I do hope there is a second chance and K perfoms.
By the way how hot was KY on stage? too bad we didn’t see much of him during the drama.
He was our one gratuitous non-shower naked torso scene! There was absolutely no sense in him ripping off his shirt other than it’s a Korean drama!!! LOL!!!!!!

I am torn about the ending. She was right in making the offer, but the other girl was wrong in wanting all the spotlight for herself. They should have split it. I’ve seen other shows/movies where they actually split the stage between the two actresses.
That’s not the ending of the program though, so hopefully they both get recognition.

I felt sad for Kyu Won because I always wanted her to be on stage and feel the excitement that she deserves. I think what she did was very unselfish but I can’t help but dislike Hee Ju for her selfishness. Kyu Won will probably not have as many offers as Hee Ju in the future. I would feel regretful if I was Kyu Won..le sigh…I just hope the next, last 2 episodes will be a satisfying and happy one. I pray ^U^
I want to give up on it, but I keep coming back for the music.
I was afraid to say it in the ep 12 post, because folk would think I’m trolling, but I do NOT see how Shin can come off as a good boyfriend. The man is a control freak, a wire loose, and a bad act. Maybe it’s my years speaking, but the cute lovey-dovey stuff doesn’t last that long (for this couple, I’m giving them 2 months max) and then you’re left with the person underneath it all. And Shin’s raw moments of exposure have revealed him to be petty, insecure, and attention-demanding. Sure, it’s cute on screen, but do you really want to be together with someone who pulls pranks on you as an expression of love? He’s 20, not 12. At that point, he’s unlikely to “grow out of it.”
And KW? They say little boys marry someone like their mom, and she’s fallen for someone just like her grandpa. Which means that she’ll spend the REST of her life also catering to another man’s bossiness and pissyness.
But, I do love Grandpa. I’ll excuse him because he’s funny. Shin’s not funny.

All I have to say is that while you will encounter fouler entities on your way to the great med, there are a few ‘xams I would never want to take again, orgo being one of them. It’s really not very glamourous, as you will one day know. Especially if you choose a surgical specialty, on call usually means coming in contact with loads of various bodily fluids and many a drunken folk
Also intense muscle pain from retractor holding, if you are a rookie like me, and being bossed around by like everyone in the hospital because everyone’s been there longer than you so it’s only natural. But you’ll be in my place soon enough, and all I can say is that I hope you will enjoy the fun/cool/awesome parts(there are those as well) of this job as much as I do

I’m an MD, yes, but not a practicing physician. To sum it up, I guess there was too big a discrepancy between the person I thought I was and would be as a doctor, and the person I actually found myself being (and able to be) as a doctor.
Sethe, I actually had thoughts of giving up on medicine as well, I even took a year off at one point to think things through because it was becoming obvious that I wasn’t happy with where I was at that point in time. Then I got back into medicine through a chain of events that I couldn’t exactly control. Let’s just say that I might not have gone back if I could help it, but the way things were, I had little choice but to go back. However, now I find myself being okay with where I am, and I am actually hoping medicine will enable me to do some of the things I thought it would keep me from doing(living in other countries, getting to know various cultures and people).
Everyone I know who’s a doctor has been bruised/scarred by the training process (and some of the most wonderful people I ever knew were brutalized beyond bearing by their rotations and residency experiences), but some people still have managed to make it through and enjoy their field and their work. I wasn’t one of those people (for a variety of reasons that I’ll, again, sum up as a mismatch between the persona I wanted to have at the time and the persona the field would allow), but there are people I know who find being a doctor rewarding and enjoyable, despite all the problems.
Point is, I hope Viola will be one of those who are happy and fulfilled in the field

I’m actually only a doctor on paper — right now, I do work as a teacher (ESL). Totally wasting all the years and all the money I poured into my medical education, but I’m happy for now (well, happier).

1. Arakawa Under the Bridge – Japan
Have you watched it? Are you watching it? Have you read the manga?
I have to say that this is the absolutely most zany program coming from Japan that I have seen yet. I have been watching it RAW, except episode 1 and have to say that without subs I know that I am missing out on something vital to the storyline. They do help out a little bit with telling you when the mini portion of the episode has started and ended.
2. Zenkai Girl – Japan
Oh, things are at a Japanese hot spot with the kiss that Shioda Soyoko gave to a sleeping Yamada Shota while his true love Ayukawa Wakaba watched, from a secret location between the cubby shelves, in blurry shock. Shioda has already rejected her and confessed his love to a sleeping Wakaba. What will he do when he wakes up to that feather-lite kiss?

Absolutely. I NEVER commented on any sites anywhere before I found this place (along with discovering kdramas, almost a year ago now). I was scared/intimidated to comment for a while, but everyone seemed so nice and smart and friendly (such a difference from so many sites) that I gradually worked up the courage… and my life hasn’t been the same since!

Thank you for your reply and I really appreciate it. As recommended by TT, the Monocot site recapping Princess’s Man is very good and quite detailed to let you decide whether to watch the episode now or later.
At first i just watch the drama because of Park Shi Hoo, (I love his acting, his boyish face and intoxicating smile!) but after a few episodes it turned out to be nice, full of plots, excitement and I continue watching. It is actually a love story blended with history during the Joseon period. You can see a lot of sword fighting and politics among the court officials. Hong Soo Hyun is the princess and her acting is awesome in this drama.

Question: what’s the typical age gap when you start calling a guy ahjusshi instead of oppa?
I think there are two factors, how old you both are when you first meet, and the age difference. if you meet while you are in your early childhood years and he is max 10 years older you can call him oppa, ajussi if he is more than 10 years older than you are. if you meet when you are a young woman and he is max 5 years older oppa is okay but weird and so is ajussi, if he is more than 7 years older when you are a young woman ajussi seems appropriate, but also weird.
What I would guess.
Plus, you really can’t get to Oppa until you know him better, whatever the gap.
It depends on a lot of things, I think. If he is your biological oppa then he would always be your oppa. If you are not family, then it would be appropriate to call him ahjussi once he marries.
I think samsooki wrote something about this somewhere. I’m just summarizing what he said.
my sister just got an oppa and an ajussi from the korean market in her neighborhood. I’m soo jealous! The ajussi is closer to halaboji age though but she feels odd calling him halaboji and she and oppa go over their drama watching schedules together. so feaking unfair!
The most I’ve done at a Korean market it to recommended sites to watch the show to the korean-american girl at the register. She wanted to find BL with English subs.

Haha, couldn’t agree more. PTB is freakin’ awesome – especially the humour and the constant squabbling among the characters. It’s only just begun and already I’m agonizing over the fact that it must end someday.
I’ve only watched the first episode of PTB and it’s already brimming with so much awesomeness. I can’t say enough how wonderfully badass the women are in the show, from our heroine to her best friend to the hero’s GRANDMOTHER!! Ji-sung’s character is possibly the cutest man-child ever, I love that he always carries a backpack with him wherever he goes. gah it’s so adorable I just want to squish his cheeks.
Protect the Boss is hilarious and Ji sung has definitely brought a new twist to the 2nd generation chaebol. I love how balls out funny the episodes are, but at the same time they talk about really serious stuff like anger and violence problems and mental illness.

I love everything about PTB so far too! The writing is really fleshing out the characters (even the hated second female lead, whom I don’t even hate at all!). The acting is top-notch. And the directing gives the drama a really energetic feel! The comedy is just so spot-on and seems to be done so effortlessly. The only times I laughed so hard were during MNIKSS, Call of the Country, and all of the Hong sisters dramas. And i love how the female lead is still so kickass and how it’s the male lead with the feelings first.

My first exposure to goblish was watching IRIS this week and there was an episode where the second male lead and the main villain were having a conversation with american mercenaries. It’s been a very long week so I’m happy that my weeek is almost over. It will be nothing but a k-drama weekend as I have so many dramas to catch up on and I have to stalk the video sites so I can watch the RAWs of Scent of a Woman.

Hahaha, I landed in Dramabeans land because of the piggybacks – I loved those trope explanations and have been popping in and out ever since, depending on how addictive a kdrama is.
What I particularly like is how international this community is – right now I live in a rural, extremely homogenous village so I have little hope of infecting anyone with my kdrama obsession – and here you all are, with different viewpoints and experiences, and an appreciation for just how fantastic ‘Protect the Boss’ is

it’s too early to tell yet but it might just become my drama of the year!
Halfway through ep 1, I already felt PTB was the drama of the year.
Could I be praising it too highly?
There are no FF scenes at all. (Even in Best Love, every time the good doc’s mom came on I skipped.)
The first leads are amazing, the 2nd male lead is a god in suits, the 2nd female will crush every cliche written in the genre.
The parents/gparents/side kicks are ALL full fledged people.
The writing is tops – being able to go from hilarious to sympathetic in heartbeats, and back again with no whiplash.
I could watch this show for the rest of my life.
I agree with everything you said! Every character seems so…real, human.
I love how the female lead doesn’t feel sorry for herself, she’s strong and wants respect from people, regardless of their status.
I liked the male lead character from the start, but fell in love with him in episode 3, when he told his dad that he liked his secretary’s flaws, because she made him forget about his own.
I’m a fan of Jaejoong, so of course I love his character, and the second female lead might just become my fav character, I LOVE how the actress is portraying her. I want the second leads to end up together so bad!

Re my kdrama obsession/addiction:
I get a fair amount of teasing from family members. Some of them watch from time to time but have not been bitten by the drama bug as I have (body all covered with bites).
It’s a deep secret that cannot be revealed to colleagues. Else my reputation will suffer up till retirement and beyond.
Which is just frustrating. I need to share the joys and heartaches, the giddiness, the exasperation, etc. etc.
Thank God for Dramabeans and you Beanies, all. Heaven was indeed smiling when I discovered this site.

Now, who’s loving PROTECT THE BOSS??? I’m seriously surprised that the ladies aren’t recapping it. Not a demand, just surprise because it seems like it would be right up their ally.
It’s a great show. The premise sounds so cliche but none of the characters are are at all stereotypical. The Cheabol Family is down to earth and actually loves one another. The heroine stands up for herself. Her father is in debt but not from gambling or drinking and he hasn’t fled to country so his daughter can be chased by loan sharks. the hero is an OCD Hot Mess. His perfect rival is cuddly and bromantic. And the second female lead is crazy, but a fun lovable kind of crazy. I’m having so much fun with this.
I’m sad that JB & GF aren’t recapping this ’cause reading their recaps make me enjoy a drama twice as much. Whenever I’m watching this drama I would think.. ah.. this scene and this scene.. JB/GF would probably have something clever to say ;_;

You may appreciate this, I was at a party in the mountains, and a friend of mine said they were moving to Jeju, [from Thailand]. Flames of jealousy shown in my eyes. Then an honored seonsaeng said he had just gotten back from Seoul. They knew how to say annyeonghaseyo, and gamsahabnida. I claimed to be learning Korean for the last four months (addiction to drama is longer than that) so they asked for an explanation of goodbye–annyeongkaseo or gaseo and why. I did what I could. We also discussed the tonal musicality of Hangul vs American English. You just gotta sing…

Question for some of the married ladies, or others who’ve chosen to make a long-term commitment to someone (and to men, of course, but since I’m female, I’m especially addressing the women):
What was it that most attracted you to your partner, and made you realize/decide you wanted to be with that person long-term?
I guess I’ve been thinking about this cause I’ve been feeling some attraction to a guy I work with who I sense would be super nice to me, but he isn’t the brilliantly intelligent type I usually go for. (He’s not a dummy, by any means, just not the super-smart type I’m usually attracted to.) So… I guess I’m kind of wondering if my priorities have been off… I don’t know… what do you all think is most important/desirable in a partner (even for just a dating relationship)?
oooer are you falling for a second lead type! how great is that! My problem with going against type is our life goals were too different. The future he saw, while it was great and normal I couldn’t see myself living that life. I was too young, and he was too good and normal.
I always went for super smart guys and I ended up marrying Average Joe in the brains department. I have a lot more education and book smarts than he does. But he just won me over with his personality. It’s a bit of a trade off. We sometimes have a hard time communicating and it gets frustrating. But on the other hand, we have fun and what he lacks in education he makes up for in experience because he is bit older than me. I think that’s the key. Married couples should compliment each other. You have two people who have their own strengths and weaknesses and, as Jerry Macguire said, they should be able to “complete” each other. Not necessarily right off the bat… but as you grow together in relationship, you should find that you are beginning to pick up the slack for each other’s weaknesses and augment each other’s strengths.
Well it is hard to be totally logical and under control when hormones are driving crazy your brain. But the truth is that in my case at least, I felt comfortable. I felt I’ve found the person that was perfect for me. Understanding, caring, playful. We were not just lovers, but friends and I didn;t that to end.
For me, the most important thing is kindness and honesty. However, I wanted someone I could have an intelligent conversation with. I got lucky and met the perfect guy in college. So sweet to everyone….if there was more than one girl in the car, he’d jog around to open everyone’s door. At the time, however, he was smitten with a drop-dead-gorgeous, red-headed dancer and convinced me to set them up. SO….I had to wait a few (cough..16) years to run into him again. But, SO WORTH THE WAIT. Not that I was consciously waiting for him, mind you, or even comparing anyone else to him all that time. But, when I met him post-hisdivorce, I got why no one else measured up. He was still nice-looking, still incredibly sweet, so fun to talk with. But, the best is how he treats me….like a princess. Even now, after almost 18 years. He’s still mushy as heck…actually, much mushier than I am….and my teenager is always saying that we’re disgusting (but she’s smiling when she says it, lol). And, he’s forgiven me for setting him up with the psycho that red-headed dancer turned out to be.
How you treat each other is one of the most important things in a relationship. That one aspect will affect how you communicate, regardless of how your intellectual levels measure up. Of course, you need to be able to have things to talk about, so being somewhat equal in interests/intelligence doesn’t hurt. But, it won’t help if the guy is a butthead.
My best friend has a master’s degree in International Relations from a respected school. She married a guy who never went to college. He’s smart, but about totally different things than she is. They’ve been married a year longer than we have and have four kids. They are as ga-ga over each other as they were the day they got married.

I think that it’s a decision you will both have to weigh together. MJP Hubby and I were friends and we talked about getting married before we actually decided to get married. He is my Second Lead and the best one for me.
You will always have personality differences with whomever you meet, that’s just a given. But you want someone you can weather the storms of life together with. Sometimes, Main Leads cannot do that because there are too many similarities with one another.
It really depends on your personality. If you have a dominant personality, you definitely don’t want to marry someone just like you because all you will do is fight for control.
My opinion of Education. It gets you from point A to Point B. It has some bearing on a relationship, but should not be the main focus of it. Because someday one or the other is going to get old and if there is a case of dementia or alzheimers, the brain is going to get foggy. Is Education going to matter in the long run of a relationship? Only you can answer that question for sure.

Just to clarify — when I talk about “smart” I’m not talking about someone’s educational level at all. I’ve met plenty of people with advanced degrees who don’t have a single interesting or intelligent thing to say outside of the knowledge they accumulated in their field of education. So that’s what I mean when I talk about someone being super-smart — do they think and talk about things (outside of academics) in a deep and interesting way.
Well….and “education” doesn’t always mean “smart” to me. Just cuz you know a lot doesn’t mean you know how to apply it. With my friend who didn’t attend college (due to family reasons/money/etc), he’s very smart, just not “booksmarts”. His wife’s family thought she married beneath her, but he’s perfect for her. She is very educated, but has a hard time seeing what a great person she is….he treats her like gold and balances out her poor self-perception.
aww that’s a point of view I haven’t considered. I have a friend dating a guy I think is beneath her because of their education and financial success disparity. I’m not saying the guy is perfect except for these things, but I can see why the relationship could be important thanks to your post.
They’ve been married for 18 years now. She has a masters in international relations, but chose to stay home and raise/teach their four kids (2 of whom have special needs and 1 has severe health issues) and live on the salary he can make. I have a lot of respect for her ability to live well on his limited salary while doing a great job teaching and advocating for her children, whom I adore. She’s a lovely, talented lady, but she doesn’t always see that.
I’d be really careful about that “super-smart” attraction you have. Super-smart can easily translate into know-it-all and then you might want to think twice about living with that type of person. Know-it-all can become “I’m right. You’re not” and then meander down “It’s my way or the highway” road. Do you really want to travel that road for a lifetime?
Look for a kind guy with a really good sense of humor – and look with an objective eye. In effect, marry a guy who could also be your BFF. You really have to LIKE the person you’re thinking of committing to. Lust comes and goes like the tide and it’s the most intimate bonding one can have, but the heart needs to be filled with that warm light that only love and security brings.
Fall in LIKE first – it paves the way for love. I know.

My husband gave me chocolate the first time I met him. It was pretty much a done deal from then on.
I am smarter than him. (I’m a lot more -ers than him, too, but we don’t have time for that) Add a language barrier, financial problems, the stress both of us are under at work, in-laws as land-lords, child-rearing philosophies, and a radiation scare, and we have had our bad days (weeks, months…)
But in the end, my brains and degrees tend to backfire on us, while his patience and practicality pull us back up. And he keeps giving me chocolate. I’m so easy.
I can’t tell you it’ll work, because it gets to me sometimes. But, more often than not, you don’t even think about that in the day-to-day grind. It’s a bigger deal in Asia, where men are expected to be the bread-winner and university level = job/salary. My Chinese roomie wouldn’t consider dating a guy who didn’t come from Beijing Uni like her. But, the world is changing and communication and interpersonal skills are becoming more important than smarty-smarts.
In the end, why not just go for it? Better to try than to never know.
JB – have you ever considered having a fan meet? I think it would be cool to just be able to meet you and kick it and listen to you and GF discuss dramas. If you ever do, let me know. My sister and I will be there to support.

Since it is so hard to measure which shower scene generates the most amount of drool (sorry if this sounds kind of yucky), maybe we can put him in the cover, as he is widely acknowledged to be the prototype mom-zzang.
Coincidentally, he is supposed to be the BFF of Mr. Hand Towel.

For the centerfold, I think we revisit an idea brought up a few OTs ago of hotties posing as statues in the Trevi Fountain. You know, Men of Still? Anyone remembers?

oh yeah, Kwon Sang Woo! My first kdrama lurv! since he hasn’t shared a shower scene with his BFF, SSH, (how many times do we have to mention this before this wish gets granted?) I’ll make a split-screen of these two showering.

I think along the lines of a coffee table picture book type. Lots of glossy pictures and little text as little or no caption would be necessary.
