Labour day weekend is coming up for me so I have a whole list of drama's to marathon.
Gya Baek - I watched the first episode and loved the way its going. But I have a feeling this one is going to end sadly :(
My GF is a Gumiho - I watched the first 10 episodes and can't wait to finish the rest.
I hope I have time to finish these.
And about my current love: WBDS... I wish the chirpy and immature DS makes a come back. I miss him :( Oh and am loving YW's new look. He's channeling sad-eyes from the duelist, complete with sad-eyes. The drama is slowing in pace, what with all the ginseng, but I hope it picks up soon.
YW wasn't in many scenes, but the few that he was in, I loved them. I love that YW is such a nice person. (Except of course that he kills innocent people)
But of course, the person who really captured my heart? Chun. One scene involving the tips of his fingers - I could feel myself tear up.
That sound's totally fun. This week was good for me. I finally confessed my love for korean drama's and korea to the only korean guy I know. He was impressed, unfortunately he isn't into korean dramas. He didn't even know that Won Bin is the hero in Ajhusshi. Infact, he didn't even know the name of that movie. * sigh * I started rattling off all the korean words I know and he said, "You can write your own drama with all the korean you know!" He disappeared shortly after that. I'm wondering If I came off too strong. :(
Each person is different. In my opinion, men get funny like that. I have a very strong personality and many times had the same reaction, no matter what the topic. Nothing to worry about. The good news is that there are a bunch of us Kdrama addicts right here who share your love and obsession. Nothing you could say would put us off our love for you! :-) *HUGS*
Thanks, guys!
They are 4.65/each with shipping, so each of you can have your very own collection of Kdrama ovals. http://www.makestickers.com/customize.aspx?TID=8005
There's lots of other customizable stickers, but I thought the three letter city names matched well with our Korean friends.
Sethe-
Oh, yes! He does have an amazing face. I do like him a lot, but they have so deactivated his character. He rarely gets to say what he thinks, I need more than some desperate looks to hook me. Hopefully in his next drama when he gets a bigger part.
I definitely love the one for CSW. Totally agree... just say the word, my love. Or don't even say the word... I don't care... just come near me, and everything will be fine.
I'm curious though, Jomo -- are you not feeling any of the love for Lee Jin-wook (the adorable Ryu in Spy Myung-wol)? I'm a sucker for amazing eyes, and he absolutely has those. (Plus, he's just overall beautiful, and a character who makes you want to meet him in real life and give him some lessons in emotions and love... or is that just me?)
Do I have a particularly dirty mind? I can't even read what you wrote about "eating pie" without snickering (to myself). Do I have a problem (for which I'll blame my wicked "East Coast" college roommates... I was a sweet and innocent little Midwestern girl who never swore or smoked or talked about sex until I met them), or is it natural to see euphemism and innuendo everywhere?
So JJ isn't Chun's? I haven't watched ep 18 with subs yet. Oh! that is sad! If they kill him off the show will lose its best actor. I'm pretty sure they won't.
Gumiho is really nice. I didn't watch it earlier because I'm not into bubbling heros. I prefer my heros tortured, dark and complicated. (Think YW from WBDS, Ling from Mars and even Hwang Tae Kyung from YB)
But after the good reviews on this site I though I'd give it a chance. And it's hilarious. I laughed like crazy while watching it.
She isn't, and as she tells him, you can tell it breaks his heart. The whole death scene is lengthy, and usually I'd complain, but it's beautifully, beautifully done here.
I saw 'PTB' and honestly thought of PeanuT Butter. Then I realized that's 'PB' so I searched my drama brain and thought 'Ohhhhh....Protect The Boss'. LOL. Of all my currently watching dramas, that one is my favourite. I want to watch Can't Lose but no subs out yet.
@c10k. Ohhh, had no idea viki was doing it. Lol, Ahoxan must be busy with all the dramas he's creating softsubs for. I don't mind waiting....especially since I now have WBDS to contend with.
MJP, there are no commercials when you download the vid. ^^ The only thing I watch streamed is an episode here or there of Gag Concert or Happy Together on Boo's site....and music videos.
So what do you do with the downloads after you've watched them? A lot of memory is required to store them, I believe? Do you have an external hard drive or do you delete them?
Hi, just want to share that Darksmurfsub is subbing Can't Lose.
@MJP... I rarely watch streams, most often than not I download the dramas. Yes, it takes up a lot of storage space and to store those fave dramas like DH, 49 Days, YAB, CH, and others, I have to buy and external HDD. Mine is Toshiba 500gb, but will soon be buying a new one, prolly a tera-capacity. I also don't save them on my laptop. It's just so hard for me delete my fave dramas and series (House M.D.).
I am not sure if it was on Rebel Souls, KP, or TP, but we were talking about how Ice Cream, Wrestler and ES are having a great Yeojance.
Instead of having one girl moth around the four pretty male lights, as in BOF, we get three girls hanging out - No Boys Allowed. The weight of their relationships is equal to that of the romances, not a device to move the romance along.
PTB has somehow been infused with the "good" parts of BOF, without actually copying it at all:
1. Touching 2nd female lead that you cry with and root for.
2. A male lead who really does try to change to meet the expectations of his poor-but-hardworking true love, despite all of his pampered upbringing. I have to say here that JH was never as mean as Jump-yo, though.
3. A 2nd male lead who appears to have as good a shot at the romance as the 1st lead, and who has a real relationship with the 1st male.
4. The head maid at Jump-yo's house is the same actress as Omani and she is playing the "fairy godmother" role. (I love her by the way.)
Of course BOF was a mess with its plotting and everything else, so the comparisons end there.
I know a lot of the stories have similar aspects to the above list, too.
Okay, this post finally made me want to watch Protect the Boss. Don't know why I've been avoiding it (just paying attention to real world responsibilities for once, I guess), but you've made the right comparison to draw my ardent interest.
BOF was the first kdrama I watched in its entirety. Yeah, it had plenty of problems, but I loved it to death and still do (and I thought LMH looked awesome with that perm :) ) Should I watch the Japanese version?
you really have to see the japanese version! it's less bubly and colourful and the wealth displayed a bit kitsch (huge rhinestone crosses attached to mobiles? pointed shoes? weird architecture?...) but the characters are well done...and there's perm too! ;)
*hides eyes* I just started PTB....last night before I nearly fell asleep leaning on the bookshelf (short but odd story). It's too early to be spoiled, but hurray....the good goes on!
I too am watching PTB! Great Cast, Great Writing, Love the Parents, except the Rich Girl's Mom, I think she's deliberately stirring up trouble in the family. And, what parent kidnaps their own child? That's just crazy!
Kidnapping their own child? I'm always trying to pawn mine off on someone else, lol. But, she's 14. My BFFs (we call ourselves "sisterwives" cuz we all parent each other's kids and cover for dinners when one of us is crazy-busy) and I take turns hosting the trio of 13-14 yr olds that we have. That way, a couple of us get a break from the pre-teen hormone thing.
About halfway, maybe, into ep 2 is when I fell in love.
There's a moment, which you will prolly recognize immediately, when I said, "Ahhhhhh, I LOVE THIS. I love these people. I want them to be together forever."
I didn't even start SOAW because it sounded like a depressing premise to me. I'm not fond of the melodramas, I have a sister who causes enough melodrama in my life. I love Kim Suh Ah, though, so I've been reading some of the recaps...
You are so like me! I easily get depressed, I was depressed for weeks after Dream High ended and Sam Dong had left and it was all so stupidly open ended. So I even avoid screen shots of 'Scent of a woman'. Can't stand the depressing stuff. I seriously need to control my emotions a little more and learn to differentiate between reality and fiction....but it's so hard!
I don't think you'll manage that with korean dramas ever. They insist on making you feel as jomo once said. I think you should mix things up: watch a sad one and then a funny or ridiculous one and an intriguing thriller type all at once.
@1 ahjummabunnylove yes that's exactly what I do, I mean I have to in order to avoid either killing myself with frustration at the overrrr angst or just stop watching it all together- everyone knows how much k-drama makers love: death, cancer....making the romantic leads diblings of some sort (although the latter is a significantly less prominent story line these days for which I'm glad!)...To keep the depression at bay I started watching 'Best love' while watching 49 days....wow it was a relief lol. P.s I'm loving PTB!
I cry at everything. My hubby banned me from "Extreme Makeover, Home Edition" cuz I would blubber through it, and then wake up the next morning with a headache and be all crankypants. My friends tease me about it some, if ANYONE is crying, I'm right along there with them. OK, not always kids crying....but most adults. I'm an organist and I can't play for funerals, even if I don't know the person, because if anyone else is crying, I"m crying and I can't play and blow my nose at the same time, lol.
Also, what little TV I watch, I watch for the escape factor, so I've never been a soap opera fan. I love action shows...liked Athena for the most part, and romantic comedies. And, as I've mentioned, I get enough real-life melodrama from my crazy sister, I don't need any in my entertainment.
That said, I don't mind a dramatic show if it has some comic relief....I think in Spy Myung Wol, there are enough funny characters to keep it from going to far overboard. Although I can't imagine how they are going to resolve it in a happy way.
if dramabeans didn't have a post about quick I would have no idea what the show is about. The commercial doesn't even show lee min ki just a speeding motorcycle won't you take me.
@MJP I dunno, I'm not sure where I could see it around here, unless it ends up online eventually. Any ideas where to look? It looks good. I like Lee Min Ki. And I like Badass and Flashy, too.
I've purchased one Korean movie on ebay cuz it had my other honey (KJH) in it. I'm pretty sure my 1st honey will like it, but we haven't had time to watch it together yet. He's usually trying to do something else while he watches a movie, and it's hard to do that when you have to read subtitles.
I don't think Quick is online yet. Possibly the end of this year? It opened 7/2011 so what three months or so before it hits video, then a few more months before someone translates and puts subs to it?
YAY! I thought I was the only one depressed over DH ending like that. Yes, in a lot more ways, it was a better ending BUT it should not have been that open-ended. Still one of my favorite dramas ever, Dream High. All my faves are stored on my EHDD.
I agree, but it's still gonna hurt. So bittersweet! Even if they kiss and make-up, they still have to say good-bye.
Don't you think this would be a fabulously cathartic show to bring out in the future when all you want to do is cry?
49 Days just pissed me off, so that one won't work.
CYHMH is too long.
I am so truly madly deeply in love with LDW, I'd watch him watch paint dry. Preferably while he is dripping wet, de-clothed, and kissing me.
Hi izzie, what happened to your palm trees/umbrellas? LOL I'm not watching SOAW but I read the recaps. I hate it when they start a show happy and end up making it sad and drippy. Myung Wol the Spy is also turning melo, but surprisingly, I still love it.
Hi Jomo, I love LDW too, just can't bear the shows he's chosen to do since My Girl....watched Partner halfway then stopped, this one too....wish it were a happy upbeat show. Sigh.
If you like upbeat, you won't like La Dolce Vita.
BUT IT WAS SOOOOOOO GOOD!
LDW was beyond hot. It wasn't a tearjerker, so much, but there is a lot of tension. Lots of silence inside of the lots of talking.
Divorce talk, marriage talk, mistress talk.
Jomo, it's strange but I don't find Princess's Man sad, as in I find myself laughing hysterically at many parts - the bad guys especially overact a lot, and their exaggerated WE SO EVIL expressions really make my day. Park Shi Hoo was slashed all over, and what do you know - he doesn't even need surgery! He's like up and about in 5 minutes, and plotting revenge! Some parts are downright ridiculous, in fact.
Strangely, I also don't think the Princess Man is sad maybe am not invested in the characters, immune or the realization that sagueks always have sad endings
I think I am just too heavily shipping the OTP it just breaks my heart. And I'm crying too much. My eyes are all dry. I haven't cried half an hour straight since......... ever. And then I torture myself by rewatching episode 14 over.. and over.. and over..
I think just episode 14 is just slaying my heart. I can't bear the way Moon Chaewon looks at Park Sihoo. It breaks my heart over and over again and then I go on Chinese forums and they analyze this stuff over and over again and it breaks my heart more and yeah.
What's wrong with me... And hi YY I haven't been on DB in forever!!
But I still hope that they give us some break from the dang crying. I still can't get over running out of tears last weekend during my SoaW marathon. It was like trying to poop but all you give off is gas (minus the icky factor), but your insides still feel twisted.
LOL. My friend cried the entire time she watched episode 12.
"Don’t you think this would be a fabulously cathartic show to bring out in the future when all you want to do is cry?"
I will do that in case my sinus acts up again. :) Just pick any of the episodes from 8 to 12.
"I am so truly madly deeply in love with LDW,"
Oh yeah. He's my much needed distraction from missing Mr. Cute but Skinny during the weekends. ;)
Park Shi Hoo took off his shirt and bathed in murky river water in Princess's man. His chest was sooooo HUMUNGOUS, when he stood sideways it looked like a BOOB fitted with a missile!!!!! What the heck - it was a really really IMPORTANT part of the show too, and they had TWO other guys halfclothed too, in that scene - they were all like standing in the water, and TALKING and SCRATCHING their chests! So distracting, especially when I was trying to concentrate on the dialogue. Ep 12, I believe, in case you are, uh, interested in the, uh, conversation, girls.
OH, the conversation, to be sure. I decided against Princess Man, too Romeo and Juliet for me. But I might have to go catch Ep 12. Not like I care about the dialogue since I don't know what's going on anyway, so I can concentrate on the other important stuff, lol.
Okay, I couldn't find it in episode 12. I skipped every 2 to 5 minutes. I shouldn't have missed it right?
It started out dark in a forest and some men were fighting. Then the scene switched to women in buildings and city life and then the men were capture and thrown down on some rocks after beaten? Then back to city life, some guy dragging a woman off and then dark again and people talking. No naked chests.
He looks fine facing forward. But I think I see where YY is going with the boob comment. He seems to have worked out more in the pectoral (sp?) region than elsewhere, so he has 'man boobs'.
I am NOT a PM fan but I do remember reading him saying that he was working out in anticipation of a shower scene. He thought it being summer there was a strong likelihood of that happening.
Apparently it did happened but I am not going to look for it now after all the man boob talk.
MJP and everyone else looking for PSH's man-boobs, the scene is at the beginning of ep 12. There's this scene of PSH killing Bad Guy who killed his father, ANOTHER half-naked man running through the forest, some fighting, moody girl talking to father, Bad Guy Who Overacts screaming PSH's name as he bends over fallen comrade's body, and voila! Man-boobs scene with PSH and ANOTHER half-naked dude. Lots of splashing sounds, and one really BIG close-up Man-boobs scene...like REALLY BIG and in your face, on the left of the screen. Be warned: this scene is not for the faint-hearted.
SoaW was light and fun at the beginning, which made me wonder how they'd keep that mix up until the end. But they didn't and it got heavier and heavier and heavier with the drama - although I couldn't get off it coz though it's a torture, it's good. And Wookie's in it. (His eyes! His eyes! So magnetic.) But I'm still hoping for a respite from the tears before the final ep.
I am named after my father's boss' wife and the fact that I brought " " to my mother since she almost died having me. She could not have children after she had me.
49 Days... I am still not ready to rewatch. I think maybe in another 6 months or so, I may rewatch it. I calculated it would probably take me a year to recover. I still listen to the songs though, beautiful OST!
especially jung yup's nothing happened. I loooove that song. I saw he was holding a concert on alkpop recently and I actually checked to see if I could get time off from work to go. I'm not the type to go to concerts but I loved seeing him on yu hui yol's. I don't know when I will be able to watch that drama again or if I will be able to. My dramafever key is over flowing right now.
Can't get over 49 Days, I cried buckets over that one. But, I still decided to watch SOAW, which is really good. Yeah, one real tear-jearker but kinda love it. The start was not really sad but is very enjoyable. But as of late, it was really getting really sad. Anyways, there is still PTB to make me laugh on weekdays.
meep! I'm still not caught up from last weekend. That's part of my goals for the holiday. Oooooh. And there's Twinkle Twinkle to get through, with it's makjang-y-ness. Maybe I need to queue up more PTB to offset the sad times.
Wow, I'm first. Weird. :0) Happy Friday, everyone! Three day weekend ahead. My honey gets to escape the clutches of stupid silicon valley for three whole days! Woot, woot!
Happy weekend to you, too. I won't be k-drama-ing much. Mr Shel is gone about 13 hours a day, due to a 1 1/2 hr commute, so when he's home, I don't watch much TV of any kind. Plus, we have all kinds of plans with our chingus....three families that we consider as our own family...so we're looking forward to it.
We're all great! The married kids in law school haven't called for money, there were no major tantrums from the 14 yr old and all 16 of our extended "family" are healthy at the same time. Which is weird, lol. I'm nearly always tending an extra kid while said kid's mom is off to the doctor or something. It was almost twoo quiet here this week.
16 extended family? You must not quite know what to do (other than watch dramas) when you are alone? I am so wierd. When I get time alone, I start cleaning like crazy! I am so anticipating Wee MJP's going to preschool in a couple of weeks. I've got a list of what I am going to be doing. Spackling and sanding and taping and draping and painting! Weeding and feeding and shaping and landscaping! Oooh, I can't wait for cooler weather to come!
Well, they aren't TECHNICALLY family...kind of "family of the heart"....three families that we're very close with. They families live in sort of a condo-triplex where they each have a house, and a common area, where we have get togethers, etc. (long story how all 3 fams that we love ended up there together) WE call it, jokingly, The Compound. One mom has tiny kids, the other two have a couple of special needs kids each. Which means lots of doctors, therapists, etc. I've become kind of the compound grandma, watching kids while someone's off to the doctor, or holding the baby (almost newborn and my favorite job) The best part for us is that my only-child-syndrome daughter has a gang of "siblings" to learn all those things you learn from having siblings. Her only brother was mostly out of the house by the time she was 3. And those ladies are my "sisterwives" (we call the guys "brotherhusbands, lol), we're there to back each other up with parenting, meals, etc. We live a couple of miles away, but I think we spend as much time there as we do at home.
I caught back up on Spy Myung Wol....and honestly I don't know what they're going to do with the next two eps, but it doesn't seem like they have enough of a plot to make it engaging.
Last night I started Warrior Baek Dong Su...only 1 and a half eps so far but its definitely interesting. Since its a sageuk, I'm already expecting that a lot of people will die so I'm preparing my mind for it. -_-'
And in jdrama land, I'm loving Zenkai Girl and Ikemen Desu Ne. XD Felt sure that the latter would disappoint me but it hasn't. It really is a Japanese version of You're Beautiful. Haha.
Glad you started WBDS. I'm totally addicted to it. I skipped over the first 2 episodes since I just wanted to see what it was about but once the kids grow up to be 12 it gets really interesting. The child actors are sooo good in that, I almost didn't want them to grow up.
The only actor I know in this series is the one who plays Dong Su as a child and I got excited when I realized he was it. Lol, it actually pushed me to watch it more. I remember falling in love with him when he played child the Iljimae (LJK version)...his time on screen was brief but good.
he was also the child in giant and the child in a few other dramas I can't think of now. I really love that kid and nam ji hyun who plays younger monk girl. I hate that all her roles now are not as good as her will it snow role. I'm only up to episode 7 but the show is starting to get interesting again. When I first started it I was watching il jimae and so I would get confused about what was happening where ( I think the character chun in this drama is in il jimae as well)
aoiaheen, exactly my thoughts. i was excited to see them all grown up! but then.. i realized i was really going to miss the little kids. such great actors for kids their age.
Usually in dramas i find it hard to let go of the child stage cause that's where most of the precious memories are stored. heh
I was just thinking about proposal daiskusen this week and smiling and also angsting that kenzo took all 16? episodes to finally confess. I was thinking of watching it again. Have you seen it?
HAHAHA. I'm on the Ouran High School Host Club ride right now. I watched the anime a couple of years back when it first came out (whenever the hell that was... time... it's all a blur), so I wanted to see the dorama. Hahaha. I don't think I'll ever get tired of j-dorama no matter how many people think it's horrible/of-low-quality. I say to every person their own.
I'm kindof behind these days on my j-dorama. I feel bad that I still haven't finished BOSS 2. And I was looking forward to Nodate-chan's (hehehe) antics. I really want him and Eriko to move beyond just being friends.
I plan to watch Ouran High School as well. I love the quirky manga/anime feel that those kind of dramas have. I've always planned to read the manga but didn't get around to it.
Jdrama land is filled with cross dressers this season - Hana Kimi 2, Ikemen Desu Ne~ and Ouran High School. I'm not sure about a second Hana Kimi - the first one was an all star line up and I know no one from this remake. :o
Yeah, saw the preview for the remake for Hana Kimi the remake on Tokyohive, but I just couldn't bring myself to watch it just for the reasons that: (1) I've read pieces of the manga, (2) seen the original and loved it and (3) seen the Taiwanese version and thought it was alright, but not very fulfilling. Another version would just be overkill at this point for me.... That, and like you said, I don't know any one in this new cast.
I too love the quirkiness manga/anime feel for some j-doramas. They're unrealistic, but the emotion for some of them, especially the underdog one (my favorite kind), gets me all the time. X)
lol...yeah, that underdog theme. If you feel like you need some life's lessons about doing your best and making it through - watch a jdrama. Hell, read a manga or watch an anime too. Haha.
Is it just me, or are the dramas getting a bit more realistic with skinship lately? As in, both open references to sex, and in characters actually kissing and having sex when they're in love / in a relationship, instead of calling each other perverts for thinking of such things...?
It's something that I've noticed in Protect the Boss, where there is lots of kissing early on in the drama, and Spy Myung Wol, where the sexual references started very early on as befitted the plot... Scent of a Woman went there too, and I'm sure there were others I can't think of now. Can't Lose did, and in fact, Best Love did too, with clear innuendo and talking about it!
Oh, I forgot to say that I consider this a very good thing! I hope the next step will be that heroines are allowed to hug and kiss back when hugged and/or kissed. It's so silly when they stand their with their arms hanging down, like a lamp post or something.
Lol. So true. hit her rather than kiss her is a good way to describe it. Its good that there's a little less of that and I've also noticed a shift in how these scenes are done.
Yes! It's really like she's hoping it will all be over soon and he will stop attacking her like that. *rolls eyes* Or maybe she'sd afraid for her manicure....? *g*
I like that they're being more realistic and hope they totally ditch those closed mouth torrid kisses (i.e Myung Wol from that ep which shall not be named) with only their heads moving. It ruins everything!
They should learn something from Yoon Eun Hye cause that girl does not disappoint in the smooching department.
Cool, so it's not just me then! That gives me hope. :-)
There are always kisses that stand out - I loved the kisses in Coffee House! - but it'd be a good thing to generally have both characters löook like they actually want to be doing this.
Maybe at some point - gasp!! - a woman could even be the one to kiss her boyfriend!
I think what I like most about dramas such as Coffee Prince or Smile, You is that when the lead characters actually become a couple, kissing also becomes natural to them.
True. :-) I don't remember those dramas in such detail, but I always love that, too.
And the reason those Coffee House kisses were as smoking as they were - to me - was that the passion was so clearly on both sides. There was real, palpable sexual tension, and both of the characters wanted the other, and *that* makes it for me. Not the guy grabbing the girl and laying one on her while she stands frozen in motionless shock...
Well, MGIAG not only had the female lead initiating kisses, but actually pouting that the guy doesn't want to "mate" with her. Hahaha.. good times good times
But she was characterized as a weird, starved-for-affection creature, so that's an exception. :)
Wasn't there a scene in MNIKSS where Samsoon kissed Samshik /Jin Heon first? I'm not sure of that but I'm quite sure of Lee So Young making the move when Choi Jin Wuk hesitated in Baby Faced Beauty.
I Need Romance, Lie to Me, even in CYHMH although to a lesser degree
It is a good thing indeed, since they the main characters stop acting like preteens embarrass of everything.
And CYHMH is probably one of the only one's I've seen where the hero is not the first person the heroine has ever kissed. Loved that tiny little thing about CYHMH.
Oh, of course! Thank you for explaining. I haven't watched that one yet because the basic premise doesn't appeal to me, but I've heard a lot about it, and that it's really good!
you know I was a little uncomfortable with the kissing in I need romance. I'm all for real kissing, but their kissing was a bit too hot. Is that weird?
*follows you to rewatch it*
i personally really liked I need romance because it felt so different from regular kdramas. the story moves fast, it's fun, and there are legit kisses :O keke.
do you guys remember that was some "behind the scenes" moment after some BOF episode and the director was telling to the hot sweaty half-naked Lee Min Ho "don't open you're mouth! don't open your mouth!!" as they were shooting the kiss in the chalet? it was so awkwardly funny, as if LMH had to go against his natural instinct and tried to stop his lips move on their own :)
Hi MJP! I am horrible with abbreviations - could you tell me which dramas you mean? I will then proceed to be totally embarrassed that I didn't get it on my owwn. :-)
Thank you again! :-) I was wondering about FVM and AM in the post above - but maybe those mean something else entirely, and I will feel even dumber if someone explains it to me. ;-)
I'm only ten episodes away from FINALLY finishing Flames of Desire. Took me months and months, but I'm finally closing in. Can't wait for everything to come to a head!
Otherwise next on the list will be Protect the Boss after hearing about the lead being quite the non-Candy type. Otherwise I'll just pick up Best Love again. Though Samsooki's recaps make me tempted to watch My Name is Kim Sam Soon again.
Three day weekend here I come for more writing and studying though.
I also am reading samsooki's recaps, which is why despite my goal to go to sleep early last night, I watched eps 1 - 6 straight through.
It is so hard to put JooWon and Samshik together in my mind. HB made both characters so memorable.
And the fact that I am also watching KSA die in SOAW doesn't intrude on my image of KSS. It's not just the weight, they feel different.
(I do skip as much of Skinny and Henry as I can. I want to kill her most of the time, and I want to kill him all of the time. I am not a DH fan.)
but does he play a korean person? I've only seen him in kim sam soon but I have to agree that the actor in witch amusement chef johnny kruger had a better presence.
Exactly. I haven't seen a kyopo actor who's actually any good at acting in any dramas I've seen. Of course, I'm not an expert... there are many, many dramas I haven't seen... but I'm thinking of Philip Lee, Daniel Henney, and Sean Richard... and I might say they're handsome (or not), but I wouldn't say they're great actors, at least in the roles they're given.
speaking of voice porn, I'm always surprised by won bin's voice. I've only seen him in friends and I watched that at work without sound so when I saw his cuckoo rice cooker commercial I was knocked out.
There's something about the way Americans (or native English speakers, in general) talk and "act" in Korean dramas that's just... uncomfortable. You know what I mean?
VOICE PORN! First time I"ve heard that, but I think it explains CSW's attraction. I couldn't figure it out cuz I don't think he's all that cute. But he has an AWESOME voice, gives me goosebumps.
And my KJH (yeah, yeah, I know DB claims him, too) has a great voice, too. But he's cuter.
I was planning on watching Flames in its entirety since I've been catching the odd episode or two on MBC and it's fricking addicting but I decided it was too long so I watched the finale yesterday and am calling it quits!
I'm also watching Soul (Hon) and can I just say...oh holy, I have to sit with all my stuffed animals around me to remind me that everything is normal >.> i think...
I watched flames the same way. I think I watched 7 episodes and the last two episodes. I wanted to watch the whole series after watching the finale I just might. Mbc is airing hit now and the first few episodes were really good so I added it to my dramafever queue.
As always thanks to the DB team for recaps and updates of what's going on in KDrama land.
Wonder what everyone is watching at the moment.
I've been going back to some older dramas such as What's up Fox? and Soulmate which I'd never seen before and am half-way through repeating Sungkyunkwan Scandal.
Of present dramas I'm enjoying A thousand Kisses and am looking forward to seeing Daniel Choi in The Musical.
me too, I just watched it raw. LOLS , i did not understand a bit but the first part isn't that engaging tho, the last parts got me. Daniel Choi, eh! Darksmurfsub will be subbing this drama.
Hai! I'm trying to finish up on Spy Wyung Wol and City Hunter and I'm currently picking up 9 ends 2 outs (which I think was absolutely overshadowed by Coffee Prince back then)
Though I enjoyed the recaps here at DB I found watching the drama City Hunter just too much and Myung-wol the Spy reminds me of Mary Stayed out All Night.
I'm definitely one for romance rather than action and though I can roll with stories when there are imperfections I don't like repetition.
I've been putting off watching 9 ends 2 outs since 2007...I'm lousy hahaha!
I couldn't stand Mary Stayed Out All Night...it was such a mess for me. The only types of dramas I'm avoiding are actually melodramas, not a fan of the genre. I thought I'd finish the 3 dramas first before I head off to other dramas.
happy weekend every-one.. cant linger long here coz i have to dash home in 10 mins..
started watching Best Love this week.. GHJ and both the male leads are awesome.. it is damn funny too.. couldnt resist LOLing lots of times..
@Cynthia: you cracked me up with your updates on' Love keeps going'.. what!! do the writers want to put in every twist that comes to mind? serious illness, pregnancy, other guy proposing marriage..whew!!! whatz left? i'll watch 'LKG' only when my hubby's not around.. otherwise he'll think i've gone bonkers for watching such stuff.. anyways i WILL watch it to laugh over its silliness..
okay guys, I was getting ready to call you on your poor taste this week after watching protect the boss. So I think an apology is in order beforehand, "guys, I was wrong, I'm sorry I doubted you." I love protect the boss! I was laughing so hard. I think choi kang hee looks a bit long in the tooth but I have some affection for her and of course JISUNG and I was soo surprised about jae joong ( is that the kid's name?) I expected him to be awkward and not very believable as a scheming cousin. I love it.
In other news I saw a really charming episode of win/win this week with jung jin young and his director best friend/ partner lee jun ik. Their bromance was sooo adorable. I haven't seen the king and clown or any of jung jin young's movies and truthfully after watching him I'm not sure I will, but I got a warm feeling from watching him all the same. win/win guests usually charm me though. the black skirts was on yu huiyol this week and I want to thank you faithful mediafire uploaders for giving me two whole albums.
Hehe. You're forgiven. I was expecting Jaejoong to kinda suck too but omo omo....I LOVE his character. The best thing about PTP is how they chuck all stereotypes out the window.
The main female is tough and very masculine. Haha....I love her unladylike walk.
The main lead is a chaebol with the mentality of a 16 year old.
The second male is supposed to be cool but is as much a child as his rival, except he...kinda hides it better.
And the second female was also supposed to be cool and calculating but she's too busy being bawling her eyes out (in an awesome way) and disagreeing with her mom.
are you mocking my poor html skills!!!! lol The parents are part of the mad cap too! I'm sooo glad the show is funny. Choi kang hee is very good. Not everyone can deliver a speech like she did during her interview and sound earnest but not whiny. I was surprised actually. PTB fighting!
How on earth did everything get italiczed? lol. Did you break something ahjummabunnylove?
I know what you mean about the speech. It didn't have that self-righteous whiny save the earth with a weepy voice tone. It was sooo matter of fact. I think I applauded. Haha.
Protect the boss has characters that go against all cliches. I love it.
My fav. part is how they make the second female lead totally lovable yet pitiful. The only time i ever saw a glimpse of that was in BOF. It's also realistic. She's a rich loner who has no friends and yearns for it. ha.
And, i may add, it is the best comic relief after Scent of a Woman.
my JYJ boys have a tendency of breaking those pesky idol stereotypes
*beams with pride*
They are also amazing singers /songwriters/composers
Junsu(perky butt junsu for those watching SOAW)/Jaejoong are the best singers in KPOP hands down
if anyone didnt notice Jisung and eunsol's song was written and sung by Jaejoong
back to PTB
My OTP at the moment is JAESUNG (Jaejoong+ Jisung)
and Na-Sol (Na yun + Eun Sol)
I'm rooting for Jihun the most
I'm kinda disappointed to see the lack of interaction between Halmonee and Muwon though :/
What can i say?
I love all the characters
The more i see of JiSung the more obssessed I'm becoming
I'm planning on marathoning some of his past work
PTB is my CRACK
Watching the anime version of Winter Sonata ^^ I'm finally watching it sans BYJ's unmoving face.
QUESTION! How many of you are listening to kpop or have ventured to kpop from kdramaland and if you'd recommend 3 kdramas to a newbie, what would they be?
I became a k-poper from the woman who still wants to marry. The music in that drama is to die for. I'm currently breaking in some newbies with my first sister I used kim sun ah in city hall and kim sam soon and then dae han min guk lawyers/lawyers of the great republic . I think lee su kyung is very funny and the eye candy is these dramas is eye candy.
for my second sister I started her on gloria and then giant and then will it snow for christmas. We're just starting the comedies.
For a complete stranger I would recommend
Bad Couple
City Hall
My Girl
the woman who still wants to marry!!! gosh! I've totally forgotten about that drama! nice of you to mention it, I haven't gotten through ep 1 of that since...well, I got caught up in a lot of things.
It's funny how I've never seen the biggest kdramas and I've been around for a long time. hahaha! Kim Sam Soon, Winter Sonata...I've never seen these big ones with the A-listers hahaha!
I haven't seen the older melos like winter sonata but I did see kim sam soon. I find it becomes necessary to see them sometimes because I feel silly when I'm blown away by something someone else describes as typical. I didn't have dramabeans when I started watching dramas I just clicked on the names of the characters in the drama I was watching and watched the dramas they were in before if they seemed interesting and kept doing it. I still do it now if someone blows me away in a drama.
I would definitely recommend Boys over flowers first. It's one of those dramas you can only appreciate the awesomness of when you're a newbie so you don't notice it's flaws. Then Coffee Prince and You're Beautiful. Those are definitely some of my favourites....though it's soooo hard to choose just 3 T___T!
And I do listen to Kpop. It actually started from me wanting the OST for dramas and then discovering kpop groups from there.
I've never finished watching both YB and BBoF hahaha! I still have 2 episodes left from both dramas.
And Coffee Prince is like my favourite of all time because the soundtrack was just superb. It introduced me to a lot of k-indie and other indie artists that are now my absolute favourites and eating a majority of my hard drive. (such as Sondre Lerche and Lucid Fall).
Is it weird that I got into Kpop through the Vengeance trilogy?
Actually it was Full House...wow that takes me back! I remember watching that when I was still in high school lol. I discovered Rain and started acquiring a few of his songs then I watched some other stuff and stumbled onto BoF. That's when I discovered SS501....and that when the world of Korean boy bands opened up *gleaming eyes* But I think the real break through didn't come till Big Bang....
My14 yr old daughter and I started on Kpop after Playful Kiss...our first drama. We found that on Hulu quite by accident. From KHJ, she got hooked on SS501, then Super Junior, then SNSD and the Wonder Girls, then.....now we have a iPod Kpop app that we hook to the stereo in the mornings...it just plays a Kpop broadcast station. We listen to that until we start schoolwork (she's homeschooled) cuz that's the only time of day Dad isn't home to complain about it, lol.
OK. I'll add you to my list of "pseudo-kids". I only have two real kids...one is 31, the other 14...yeah, life is a funny thing. BUT, I have at least a dozen "kids" that I call my kids, and now I have 10 "pseudo-grandkids".
Yep that was my first k-drama too. I also recommend seeing it first also because it is longer than the average so if you get hooked with it you'll have enough patience to get to see the ending. You're Beautiful, Secret Garden, Best Love are also good dramas to start with. :)
Oddly enough i was into kpop BEFORE i started watching Korean dramas. My top three recommendations, that truly converted my love for korean dramas:
1. you're beautiful
2. Boys over flowers
3. Goong
AND then when you are truly and utterly addicted.. you must check out 'City Hunter' which only ended recently which i absolutely LOVED
I love Goong! It got me hooked so bad! I swear hahaha! I'm watching City Hunter now too. I usually let the drama finish before I actually watch it. Saves me the frustration from cliff hangers hehehe
I watch/listen to my Kpop on YouTube. I only know of mostly OST's. But I am learning through reading via various websites. Still, I only listen to a few artists yet.
I like the ballads the best. But the upbeat stuff is great to clean house to. Or exercise. As long as it doesn't have too much rap in it....really don't like rap.
Love Seung Gi, Young Saeng, Kim TaeWoo, some SS501, CN Blue, G.NA, some Super Junior. Bought (or found online) the OSTs for City Hunter, Lie to Me, BOF (although I immediately deleted Almost Paradise....hated that song), Bad Guy (hated the drama, loved the music), Capital Scandal (old KJH drama...music is swing music, which is a genre I adore).
Heo Young Saeng has a beautiful song in the PTB OST. It first aired in EP 7, I think. It was supposed to be released on 8/31, but I haven't had time to look for it yet. It's called Sad Song. Oh...wait, if you go to http://www.viki.com, they have an OST page for PTB, there's a link to a video with the song...I just couldnt download it yet. Young Saeng was the lead singer for SS501 and has a beautiful, powerful voice. The members of that group are doing solo stuff now and I was really looking forward to his album. I was sort of dissappointed he went for dance tracks instead of ballads. So, I was glad to hear the new song in PTB,
Personal Taste OST also had several ballads that I really liked.
I ventured to kpop...but it was a small venture. Haha. The only artistes that I have downloaded full albums for are Rain, Lee Seung Gi and Big Bang. I download a number of OSTs though.
I'd recommend:
- Brilliant Legacy
- 49 Days
- Time of Dog and Wolf
- Resurrection
It'll depend on what on the other person's preferences.
I have a friend who can't deal with tears and mean but I got him hooked to Secret Garden, and then Best Love.
Personally I try to avoid melodramas,
You're Beautiful
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho
Coffee Prince
are good to begin with kdramas, but I have to agree with NKB BOF is a show you better watch when you are a novice, and even then the second part get too freaky
I introduced Kdramas to several family members and we are all now drama addicts. One day my daughter posted a video on my FB wall and said she'd found the Korean Back Street Boys. It was SHINee's Ring Ding Dong MV. It was very catchy and addicting. Not long after, the 14-year-old in our Kdrama addict group made me sit down and watch another MV. Little did we know that GD & TOP's Knock Out would start an obsession that rivals our Kdrama addiction. I'm 42 years old and I've always hated hip-hop and rap....until Big Bang. We've been slowly acquiring cds, concert dvds, and anything else we can find LOL. And the love has spread to others - 2PM, B2ST, SHINee, FT Island, CNBlue - you'll notice that these are all boy groups....can't for the life of my figure out why....
I was actually a kpopper long before I got into kdramas thanks to my brother and the international channel introducing me to g.o.d., boa, h.o.t, baby Vox, and shinhwa back in 2000. I personally didn't get into kdramas till i was in college and didn't have cable in my apartment (was rarely home so didn't see the point of a cable bill.
As for a kdramas newbie, I think it depends on the age of the newbie but generally I would recommend
1. Coffee Prince
2. Goong
3. city hall
And they must watch one of the seasons dramas . I personally got introduced to kdramas after my friend told me to check out Autumn In My Heart / autumn fairytale which I loved but it was full house, goong, and coffee prince that sealed the deal for me.
Hey people!! So good to be back on OT :) Though I'm watching almost all the dramas mentioned above (yes currently I have no life), WBDS is by far the most exciting with PTB coming in a close second (SoAW as beautiful as it is, is getting a bit too depressing for me to enjoy fully). I mean how AWESOME is Chun?
*SPOILER*
Though I suspected it for ages, when Ga Ok told him Jin Ju was his daughter my heart just dropped! And does anyone else wish Dong Soo would end up with Jin Ju and not that awful other Ginseng girl? They are the perfect OTP! Or is it really just me? Is it too much to ask that she gets Chun as her dad AND Dong soo? NO drama gods I don't want an answer to that! (covering my ears). And Un!! I finally know what it is to be a noona enamored with a dongseng lol!
I was hoping jinju was sword saint's daughter. I'm behind on this show I think I'm half way through episode 7 my dramafever key is sooo long and I've decided to finish all the shows I only started and I'm watching be strong geum soon and time between dog and wolf on dvd as well as the weekend dramas and the monday tv shows on syfy and working like a michi salam. I am ranting. I apologize.
I really want Chun to be the dad. But I have a feeling the GO just lied to him so he'd take care of JJ. Which I think is not fair. Chun would be an amazing father. I think he needs JJ more than the SS does.
it's so hot down here but i can never pass an opportunity to refresh the dramabeans page. lucky enough it's OT time..
the great news from the past week is that i am definitely going to university..woohoo...i'm off to Russia on the 20th of this month...waited for about one and a half years and now finally it's all good..
oh i am enjoying the Can't Lose recaps..will watch that one when i get a better internet connection. as for Myung Wol the Spy, well i'll take it as it is. i'm on the Ryu ship but i know that, that ship well it's stuck in port and is not about to sail anywhere.
loving scent of a woman even though it's been wrenching my heart the past couple of episodes.
hoping that the musical is good.really looking forward to it.
Wow. Congrats. I've always wanted to go to Russia. Actually, I want to go to everywhere in Europe and Asia. *sighs* :(
Sorry, I won't ruin the happy moment. I wish you all the best in your studies. Uni will be busy and kdramas will distract you, but remember....the dramas will still be there waiting for you. (If only I kept that in mind while marathoning anime in uni....I'd have probably gotten more As. Lol....funny, I hardly regret it though).
Strassdveiu! Kak zjivaush?
Ya goveryu ne mnoga pa russki.
Moi brat lived in Moskva in the Soviet Union back when it was still CCCP. A lot has changed since then. I am so jealous! You are bringing a very very very warm winter coat, I expect!
I took Russian for two years in university, long enough to make me write "g" for "d" till this day!
I made a list for groceries yesterday and my daughter asked "hot gogs?"
I speak French fluently because I went to a French Canadian University a Quebec - Universite Laval - Anyone?
I took Russian in college. Loved it, but it got too confusing learning two at the same time. It really was a toss up which I would end up majoring in. French won.
I took Latin, Spanish and German for short periods.
Oh my it has been so long since i've post in an open thread! I've sorely missed reading all the conversations and debate about dramas, celebrities and our day to day lives. So what happened? Uni came back, then reality kicked in.. i finally got my first job! and then in the same week a second job. Lets just say that juggling all three has been tough and it has made me appreciate my parents soo much more!
So here is a shout out to all those hard working mums and dads, grandamas and grandpas on dramabeans, because i honestly have no idea how you all manage to work, look after kids AND have time to watch dramas!
>> Please tell me your secrets! How do you manage your time so well?
lol. Its art? When I was in uni and working two jobs I still found time for anime (that was pre-drama discovery) and I honestly don't know how I did it. All I can say, sleep was sacrificed and some books were too. -_-' In other words I was a very bad Ivory.
Hmm...all of a sudden I feel like watching an anime. Haha.
I skip sleep! But I have to tell you that after a while, it really catches up to me. So, I have really cut down on watching. I haven't marathoned anything over the past couple of weekends either. Usually I would get in a bunch of watching by staying up all night over the weekends Friday night and Saturday night, but lately I've been way to busy for that too.
Poseidon's showing after Myung Wol. Sad. I really like Myung Wol. Oh, well, at least I know Viola will be happy, and if Viola's happy, I'm happy. Si won looks so cute, and the lead actress - I actually liked her in Playful Kiss even though lots of people hated her - looks really, really good from the stills. She's put on weight, and looks like her BOF days. In PK, she was sooo skinny. Not sure what the show is about - ships and water and uniforms? Poseidon just makes me think of the movie - the original one, not the lousy remake - and the memorable scene where Gene Hackman plummeted to his death as a noble sacrifice. Sniff.
I really, REALLY hated Wang Ji Hye in Personal Taste. The happiest moment in that drama (for me) was when she was bitch-slapped by Son Ye Jin's friend. I hated her with so much passion that half of the time I was watching PT was making up scenes on how they would get rid of her (mostly grotesque and bloody) inside my brain.
when I found out that she was one of the casts in Protect the Boss, I was firm in hating her character already. but after watching her scenes it made me change my mind.. SHE IS HILARIOUS...
she made the mopey, bitchy, snotty, second female lead funny and engaging. and it's a complete reversal of her previous role.
what I'm really trying to say here is that I am now a fan of Wang Ji Hye...
though I'm still rooting for Eun seol and Ji heon...she can have Moo woon.. I won't have any complaints with that.
PTB hwaiting!!!
I am also a new fan of hers. I've just finished the drama Friend, Our Legend because I wanted to watch her in it, and I must say she was absolutely wonderful! I really am enjoying her performance in PTB, I think she might be my favorite character :)
I'm so afraid thinking that PTB is heading towards ugly conflict and melo. I hope the spare some laughs to compensate for the ugly that is coming.
Or atleast I hope I'm wrong and the conflict doesn't get too ugly, after all this show is know for braking the unwritten rules of dramas.
I just saw fir episode of The Musical, and I like it so far. I really missed Daniel Choi this couple of months since BFB ended.
@bunny I finally marathon through Lawyers of South Korea, thanks for recommending it so many times.
Of course, that got me behind with the recaps on my own blog. :(
I hope PTB isn't going to go TOO melo on us. It annoys me when a fun show gets too melo. I think Spy Myung Wol is headed that way, but there are still funny characters to lighten things up a bit.
I'm for a PTB happy ending, the boys are friends again, NaYoon gets MuWon and JiHeon gets Eun Sol. Dad is already relenting abt the girl and whether she admits it to anyone, or even herself, she's leaning toward JiHeon. I think her conflict is going to be whether she wants to take on his nuts family. I keep waiting for her to use a good roundkick to take out those two moms, though, lol.
I'm not too concern about the couples conflict, since I belive it a to be pretty much resolved. But M and J are heading to conflict for E and for the company. Particularly for the company in order to get E.
M said he has to gain power to get E. And dad told J to be powerful to protect E.
I hope they get over it soon and become friendly cousins
I hope they resolve it, too. I think Dad is ready to try and resolve stuff, and he really does want his son to be happy, so he relented about E. But I think MW's mom is out for the entire company for her son. I need to rewatch the last ep again when they get the rest of the subs up, because I'm not sure exactly what the company power struggle is about or what exactly she's up to.
It doesn't help that I can't seem to watch anything EVER without someone trying to talk to me. I only have a couple of times a day that I have time. I figured that the one hour I have sitting in a car, very early morning, waiting for my daughter to finish her early morning religion class, would guarantee an uninterrupted hour. However, we are good friends with the neighbors at that house, also, and the men always stop to chat on their way to work, lol. It takes me two days to watch one hour of Kdrama, and then I always feel like I missed something....which is why I love the recaps.
there will probably be conflict.
what's a drama without conflict? heh.
I still think protect the boss will still have that fun factor though, throughout the series.
i have faith though that this won't end badly.
SOAW i braced myself it's a drama about terminal disease.. & myungwol the spy... well.. she's a SPY who falls in love with a guy and tricks him into marrying her. cant end good, can it?
Err...annyeong everyone. Why is every post in italics @__@
Oh I wanted to say hi to HRH Ricky.I have been looking and looking...there are no LMH wannabes in the shopping centres I went to.KL I mean.
Great shopping though 9 pairs of shoes for under $100 my currency.Woo hoo :-)
Oh can I just say I am so happy to have finally bought "Save the last waltz for me" It was driving me crazy because I have seen the ending on mysoju. However never had time to d/l it online. It's so cheap and now I can watch it.
The bonus...Ji Sung (aka Ji Heon) is on it.Whee...I am on a mission to see his dramas.I have Royal Family lined up next.Yes I know about the sucker ending but I've heard it was a wonderfully acted, written and directed drama in spite of the ending.
I liked save the last dance but found the ending cheesey and weird. I think you'll love loyal paemaeri. I too have a bunch of ji sung dramas on my dramafever key. I have vacation coming up in two weeks so I'll be watching dramas with only bathroom breaks.
I thought the ending of "save the last dance" was too much of a rip off of "An Affair to Remember", with her in a wheelchair and not wanting to burden him with her health issues. Whatever. So you make him miserable by just dropping off the face of the earth?
I remember seeing An Affair to Remember (the old one, with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr) in a theater in Salt Lake City that shows old movies. I was with a guy friend, and mostly went cuz it was a Cary Grant movie. So, it turns out to be this major tearjerker and I'm thinking my friend is hating it. If you've seen it, they wait until the very last couple of minutes to get the couple back together....as the credits roll, my guy friend says, "Good thing they fixed that ending, I was about to throw stuff at the screen!"
okay it's actually from love affair which an affair to remember is the remake of. An affair to remember is charming and I love cary grant and all, but love affair much better. But save the last dance is also very much like random harvest and if you haven't seen it, you should. it starts ronald coleman and greer garson and it is really beautiful.
Royal Family really was nicely written. The dialogue was superb and it was my first drama for Jisung - I fell in love from his first engaging discourse in the first 3 minutes of the show. The ending....could have been better but I still found it engaging.
Is it because I'm using my mobile? The only post in italics is ahjummabunny's first post. O_o
it's true the first three minutes of paemaeri was amazing. I threw over go soo's cha kang jin for han ji hyun straight away. I attempted to italicize a phrase and I thought I ended the italics successfully. Isn't i ?
I looked at the source, code, and it's because you ended up putting the i before the / instead of putting it after the / in order to close it. I was trying to add a proper closing tag, but nope. not working. Here's another shot at it.
Up to ep 16 of 32. I can't watch any scene with the "Maharaja" in it. The Evil Bad Guy to KSR's hero.
Plus Wilson from SOAW plays one of the most annoyingly fawning and weak characters ever.
If Dfever had a scan button instead blind fastforwarding, I would be able to finish. At this point, I am jumping over to FB while I am watching their scenes. I don't return.
Hi OTers,
I'm headed "up north" for the long weekend. (in Minnesota speak that means to the lake cabin) I'm purposefully not starting 9 & 10 of PTB so I don't pine over it in the non-internet environment. I've kind of stopped watching Myung Wol the Spy since all the external drama. I'll wait to see how things turn out to decide if I'll finish. Too bad since it started out so funny.
You make me nostalgic... much of my extended family is from Minnesota, and I knew exactly what you meant when you said "up north." Makes me remember the childhood years I spent near Brainerd...
I'm getting into k-movies right now after staying away for some time due to early experiences such as millionaire's first love, sex is zero, sassy girl, marrying the mafia. Turns out that my taste in k movies veer to gritty ones like I Saw The Devil, White Night etc. I'm so happy, it's like finding a new world where lotsa things are new and exciting. I have so many films to see now (main problem is to find them). Yiiihhhaaaaa. Getting my k mojo back
congratulations. I'm a kmovie dabbler, I watch whatever is on mnet. I was just sucked in to my girl and I. I knew what the story was about and I told myself I wouldn't cry and I blubbed like an idiot. I don't like the gritty or horror movies I can't make sense of it so it would frighten me. After I've taken some time to think about them I might watch one.
Millionaire's first love makes me want to hit things. Don't get me wrong - I actually love it, but I was dehydrated for a week after that. My momentary fear that Greatest Love was going in that direction really did bring out my violent streak.
Hi. everyone. This is my second time posting on the OT, Today is September 2. Is also my twenty second B-Day and after two week drama with internet connection and laptop issues I can finally watch all my shows. Its a day of 2 for me. YAY.
I'm a bit of the purist in the way I refuse to watch Kdrama unless I'm home or at my cousins house. (Where I will be going today to refill on my k-drama.) I feel weird if I watch it some where else. I cut myself off from reading recaps or going on soompi forums. But at last the await and long suffering is OVA. (and the crowd of one raises arms in the air and cheers.)
Right now I'm sitting in my car because I only catch Wi Fi outside of my house. Anyway, I live in Cali: Bay Area and the weather we've been having is hotter then usual. So I only sit in the car in the early morning or evening when it not that hot. Sometimes I'm so engrossed in the show that I look up and dark all round me. And If the show was funny I'm just laughing by myself in the dark (neighbor must I'm weird even I think it strange). I don't sit in the car all the time it only when I really miss Protect the Boss, or Scent of Women and I can't wait any longer use my cousins computer. I've been surviving by reading 1n2d recaps on my phone.
Anyway does anyone else have any drama watching habits that has formed.
Let's see...drama watching habits... I watch drama mostly at work, to the extent that it feels weird watching it at home. You see...I work the night shift: 10pm to 7am in a call centre. Naturally, most people sleep instead of phoning in with a problem. Thankfully my company is pretty cool with stuff like that, so I carry Lappie, plug him in and watch dramas in between calls. My coworkers ask me why I'm always watching asian people and I throw back at them 'Why are you always watching white people?' Tch....most annoying question ever. Its especially annoying when they see an Asian and assume they're Chinese.
On my off days I watch dramas at home to a much lesser extent because there's always stuff to do or business to take care of. But since I became obsessed with 1N2D, I tend to watch that at home and save the regular dramas for nights at work.
yes, I hate that " oh you're watching chinese shows again" even when I was ignorant I wasn't that ignorant! jeeze where do these people spend their time!
Hey, Licia...I'm also in CA, the OTHER bay area, where it isn't hot....by Monterey.
My 14 yr old goes to an early morning religion class, and since there isn't time to come home and go back to get her, I sit in the car and watch my kdramas on the wifi at her teacher's house.
Definitely do! They mostly involve me stifling my laughter because I'm always around someone (or in the library haha). It's been getting pretty bad lately because of the awesomeness that is PTB. I've read that suppressing your laughter takes up a lot of willpower - is this why I've been unable to resist the temptation to re-watch You're Beautiful? Also, when I stay up late to marathon things, I end up watching with my iPhone (as my laptop blinds me) and then I roll around on my bed in too many different positions and prop up my phone in about 50 different ways. And I watch with my stuffed animals! :P
Also, Happy Friday, everyone! Loving PTB, and also watching Nobuta wo Produce and Ouran (both of which are kicking ass.) Good luck to everyone starting school soon!!
Happy Birthday!! So awesome to finally have your laptop and internet issues resolved just in time for the big day!
I agree with you about how it feels weird to watch kdramas outside of the home. When I'm at home, i'm "in the zone" and I like the privacy to cry should some sad scene occur in the drama.
Psst...last OT, you were saying about K-actors in non K-dramas! Since I'm normally late to these hullabaloos, I had left a comment, firmly believing in the power of "The Long Tail":) I think this is where my OCD shows.....
Why do I feel like a pasticheur even if I'm just copy-pasting my own words?
"I never noticed this about Korean actors in Chinese/TW dramas till you brought it to my attention. But you are, of course, absolutely right.
Case in point: Park Shin-Hye in Hayate the Combat Butler. Ignoring the initial awkwardness of getup & language barrier, PSH literally shines and seems to dominate as the Taiwanese series progress. The drama itself is, for lack of a better word/s, poorly produced/directed. Then why watch? I have a compulsive habit of checking out Manga/manhwa-adapted dramas hoping they would live up to their outrageous plots! We owe it to the genre that gave us cross dressing high school girls and froufrou princes:) How can one not watch a drama named Combat Butler! or High School Host Club(which is next)?
Caveat:I’m not even watching a full episode, just sampling random episodes. And I haven’t watched any other K-actors in any Chinese/TW dramas to do a more studied comparison. But I think Korean invasion(of TW dramas)will be complete with airing of Skip Beat?
When you come to think of it, all you need to do is wait for SuJu fangirls to grow up, to alleviate the left-right hostilities in East Asia:)"
Don't get your hopes up with Ouran HS Host Club. I do like the lead guy, and the supporting cast isn't bad (you know, for a jdrama) but I feel like everyone filmed his or her scenes separately and they have no interaction with others on the screen. It's unsettling.
Is there a live-action Skip beat coming? Oh, do share!
It's Taiwanese...and will star Choi Siwon (Super Junior guy/Poseidon lead) and Lee Dong Hae (Its Okay Daddy's Girl) and I have no idea if their voices will be dubbed. I don't care though...I'm totally jumping on that train.
PTB is wayyyy better. I'll finish MWTS because there are moments I enjoy it (esp Ryu) and moments I'm frustrated with it but I want to see how they end it.
I just recently started watching The Princess Man like 2 days and I am already on like ep 12 and its sooooooo good. I actually didnt want to start knowing the gloomy premises and the Romeo and Juliet description. Because I dont want to invest so much emotional feelings to a couple that was not gonna live happily ever after. So i was gonna marathon it after when it was done so i would know if they lived or died. But I like love Park Shi Hoo and Moon Chae Won and I was watching Happy Together with them first and they were so cute together and they seemed so close that i started watching random clips on YT of TPM and yeah I was like I'll just watch the first episode. And 5 hours later it was episode 6. I love the story line so far. And Park Shi Hoo and Moon Chae Won are like adorably cute together. I really really really dont like the Song Jong Ho and MCW couple at all hahaha.
Anyway I really hope that they both like runaway together and live in a cave or something cause I want them to get married and have kids together lololol. I just the Romeo and Juliet description ends at the forbidden love part not the tragedy part.
Or I was thinking this is a bit far fetched but if their was like a 500 yr time leap and like the great great great.... granddaughter of King Sejo and the great great great... of Kim Jong Seo met and fell in love. That would be acceptable anything I was just want them to be together cause their soooo undeniably cuteeeeee.
To be honest, a happy ending for them is pretty much impossible for them. Sad, I know. Yet I'm still watching (sadistic, I am).
There really is no way they can end up happy together. Her dad killed his father/family! In no Confucian way will they end up happy together, this family grudge will in no way be overcome, and I'll be sitting here crying hours of tears, even for their best ending, which is them dying together or something.
GOD PRINCESS MAN WHY DO YOU TORTURE ME SO. You should catch up to episode 14, because episode 14 is honestly the best episode that has happened so far, even though it's stepped on my heart 5 billion times, I've cried 5 billion times, but it is just... god, why am I so sadistic. LOL.
I am waiting for the english subs. Oh and don't know how many times i stopped myself from watching the raw version lol hahaha oh the wait lol
but i have seen tid bids and indeed it looks awesome.
Apparently, this is like based on a real story not talking about the politics part but of their love story. I read somewhere that in real life it was the daughter of King Sejo and the grandson of Kim Jong Seo and they ended up falling in love and lived secluded in a cave somewhere in Chung.... something I dont remember the place. But apparently their is still the cave which is believed where they lived in seclusion.
Since it is dramaland I really hope they make it something like that or else i am gonna be crying buckets of tears lol
Yeah it's not real history, but it's more like "legend says" sort of thing, that's why if you look at the history books, there's no record of Kim Jongseo with a third son, Kim Seungyoo, nor King Sejo with another daughter, Seryung. But just from what has gone on so far, it's really hard for me to see this happy ending happen - I feel like Korea is much more Confucian valued than Chinese (I'm Chinese, LOL), and this... just, if they get together, it's just such a Confucian taboo I'm not even sure there is any real way for them to get together than death..
I'm also keeping up with The princess's man.. and man, even though i try to steer clear from ANY drama that i know will end VERY badly... i find myself pleasantly surprised to just keep coming back for mooore.
I'm off to my weekend kdrama marathon. :) I might not be able to visit DB until Sunday. It's gonna be SoaW-PTB-MyungWol-watch-till-I-run-out-of-episodes spree. With soju on the side.
Hi! Real life sure gets in the way of drama watching doesn't it?
I have some exciting news to share, but am going to be a bit sketchy on the details, for privacy reasons. We have been in process of applying/preparing for another child to come live with us. This child is from another country and it would not be adoption, but a caretaker as they go to school here.
We met this week with the child and current caretakers. It was a good meeting, but they have other people who they will interview. So I am really excited. But I am also very realistic that we may not be chosen. They did say we were just what they were looking for, but where we live is very far from the child's school and that is a concern for them. They would like a family closer to the child's school.
The child is very sweet, smart, shy, and funny. After meeting the child, I just want the child to stay with us. Like there is a big ache in my heart for that child. Oh, I'm gonna tear up now... Stopping that!!!
So that is the main reason why I have been missing out on my drama watching. And if the child comes to live with us, I will have even less time, but to me that is a good thing. We have a LOT of love to share. :-)
That sounds awesome! If that kind of real life takes up your drama watching time, that is definitely a good thing. I hope everything works out for the best.
I hope everything turns the way you want it.
Best of lucks on that real life adventure.
And don't worry about the dramas, they'll be in the same place where you left them when you have time to come back for them. :)
For a short time, I was a psychiatrist, and for an even shorter part of that time, I worked with and treated children who came to psychiatric hospitals.
The poor kids we'd see would be diagnosed with all kinds of "diseases" and given all kinds of medications to "control" the behaviors that made adults uncomfortable, but we all knew that the fundamental problem was the instability of the kids' lives...
I imagine I'm preaching to the choir here, but I never saw a single kid who was hospitalized for psychiatric reasons who I thought was really "bad" -- in every case, the kid's problems could be attributed to environmental and lifestyle factors.
What's my point? I don't know if I'd say we're all "tabula rasa" at birth, but kids can become pretty much whatever they're raised to be... so a kid's early environment is really important, and if you all have the opportunity to help with that, it's an investment in the future that's incredibly important and meaningful.
I’ve seen love go by my door
It’s never been this close before
Never been so easy or so slow
Been shooting in the dark too long
When somethin’s not right it’s wrong
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go
I don't know why, but italics always make me think of bob dylan.
Oh em gee, ya'll, such a Friday. You'd think we were closing early. Anywho, I just wanted to dash this off before my bosses call me back, call me over, or email me something else to do.
Jomo the Wise, it's just the HHG for now. There was a Smokin' Hot Italian Guy a lil while ago, but he's at a site. Who knows when he'll be back. The other guys at my job are generally older and/or attached. Some of them *are* cute, but often in more of an adorable way ;)
Hihi Jumma ! My week was chock full of weird. I'm more than willing to blame a good chunk of it on the hurricane. There was all this follow up at work, dashed hopes of a new asst for our president (partly due to the hurricane...), windows needing de-taping, and my bosses in all frickin' day every day this week b/c of evals. Longest week ever. But as my "brother" reminded me, I'm grateful to have a job and that we weren't effected any worse by the hurricane. It was bad enough, and I have a friend who's been looking for something for almost 2yrs :s
MJP unnieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! *receives big hug!*
Hihi :)
Yes, my obsession with HAG was a bit obsessive, wasn't it. I mean...poetry. And fiction. And did I mention the poetry? Because there was more than one. The fiction I'm actually not so mad at. Such is the life of a writer, after all.
The weekend has been good. Had a family-style dinner with the ppl I grew up with at church on Fri, um...can't really remember Sat (lol) and Sunday we went to a church we like to visit when we're not at our home church. The guest speaker had a very good message that, I at least, think spoke to what we're going through as a family/church-family right now. And today is Monday! Oh the joy of sleeping in. I'll be up before the crack of dawn tomorrow, but today I got to sneer at my alarm ;)
How are MJP oppa and Wee MJP? Does Wee MJP start school tomorrow? Public school kids here start on Thurs.
Oh! And mom got a promotion/new job :D She's very excited and very nervous. Pray for her!
TGIF!!!!
hmmm... so glad the weekend is here so I can watch SOAW where I'm guaranteed a crying spree like no other. after which I'll be pining for PTB for some laughs and general happy^^.
I'm looking forward to Poseidon, cuz' it looks like fun. cuz' Siwonnie is there and also Shi Young who is so kick-ass in real life. :) I'm hoping to see real chemistry between the characters^^ I'm wishing for Bromance galore :)
As a fairly recent J-dorama addict (2-3 months ago), I would like to proclaim my adoration for NOBUTA WO PRODUCE. It merits all the acclaim attributed to it. I've seen it twice, and it was better the second time. Equal parts humor and heartwarming. Who would have thought I would love a high school drama starring two Johnny idols? If you couldn't tell by my username, I've recently come to adore Yamashita Tomohisa after I watched Buzzer Beat at the recommendation of ockoala. Enough to try to watch his other works and download his album and that of his boy group, NEWS. And though his acting is uh... lacking (Nobuta wo Produce is the exception, even though it may have been his debut work as an actor), I do like his singing, through it's nothing mind-blowing.
I've also recently watched (dang, I've watched a LOT the past few weeks!) both seasons of LIAR GAME and movie, and whew! Love how it made me think. Nao's naivety had me pulling out my hair, and I wanted to shake some sense into her countless number of times, but overall, great to watch. I can't get over how original and awesome it is. Season 1 was the best, but Season 2 and the movie were not that far behind.
It almost seems blasphemous to say, as a Korean-American, but I'm enjoying J-doramas much more than K-dramas these days. It could be because I have gotten so sick and tired of the K-drama cliches. PTB has broken the mold, but overall, the K-drama cliche and makjang elements thread through pretty much all K-dramas. Now, maybe J-doramas also follow a typical J-dorama mold that I'm unaware of as yet, as I'm so new to them. But I like that within the realm of the J-doramas I've watched thus far, things remain fairly realistic and new, and not necessarily something I can spot a few miles off as I can in the majority of K-dramas. Maybe this is a testament to the creativity of the Japanese manga and novel writers, of which a lot of the J-doramas are based on.
First of all, I love Nobuta wo Produce. And Kamenashi Kazuya is mine, like, I will go to Japan to marry this guy for reals I am such a fangirl of his like I CAN NOT STOP OKAY I AM DONE.
Second of all, I think after watching a lot of Jdramas, there is a "typical Jdrama mold" but then there isn't. Which conflicts, I know. But I don't think it's necessarily in terms of storyline mold, which is more typical in Korean dramas, but more a stylistic mold in Jdramas. It's hard to get a hold on, but if you watch enough I think you'll get what I'm talking about.
I think lately, though, Jdramas haven't been all that into creativity... I know I go through a lot of the seasons, trying to look for a good Jdrama to watch, but a majority of them are crime-related ones and I've sort of hit a saturation point with the crime ones (though Japanese crime shows are really good, but, you know, sometimes I just want a feel-good show/rom-com show). Actually, nwo that I think of it, I think different genre Jdramas have different sorts of stylistic molds. Like, usually before a new season of Jdramas start, I'll go through and usually I can sort of "spot" what type of dramas are going to end up being like what type, not necessarily I know what's going to end up happening, but just the sort of vibe that I'll be getting from the drama, and maybe that won't go with the mood I'm feeling with so I won't watch it... I guess?
I actually had no idea what to expect from Kamenashi Kazuya. To tell you the truth, his femininity and immaculately groomed eyebrows had me wondering whether I could overlook all that and take him seriously.
* cringe, please don't hit me; anticipating furious punch *
But wow. Kame proved me wrong. I grew to love him as Shuuji, groomed eyebrows and all. Shuuji-Akira-Nobuta... POWAH!
LOL!! No problem. I used to not like him, but he slowly won me over. And now.. yeah. LOL!! (I find the ones that win me over I am most affectionate about LOLOL).
Okay, okay, you can have Yamapi. Hehe, Kame is mine!!
Speaking of his eyebrows, what the heck, I wish my eyebrows were like his. Honestly. His eyebrows are so nice... I wonder where he gets them done..
Ok so I started watching this drama, I'm halfway through it and...now I understand what all that hype about Yamapi was about :D the boy is totally fun, not to mention CUTE
I get what you mean. Jdramas have a certain flavour that makes you say 'ahh...this is a jdrama.' What I like about them is that they don't fit the mold. Seriously...like half the time, if not most...the main leads don't even get together and its not because of death, but something else. I like that they take the most normal situation and turn it into a drama and many times it sans the romantic stuff. While kdrama land focuses on romance and the typical 4 leads, jdrama land focuses on....something else.
tomo....at all costs and by all means YOU MUST WATCH HANA YORI DANGO!! Both seasons PLUS the MOVIE!
Oh yeah! J-dramas don't really give that happy-go-lucky feelings that k-dramas have. I really enjoyed Hana Yori Dango especially for the blunt, dark start. I'd like to watch more j-dramas in the future so I need some suggestions ;)
Yay!! What type of Jdramas are you into? Okay whatever I'll just recommend a bunch.
Nodame no Cantabile - uh, I just love this one to bits. I've watched this like 5 times and still love it. Yeah. LOL. I can't describe my love for this show, it's just, I love it.
Liar Game season 1 & 2 + movie - tomo watched this too, hehe, but this show is just pure awesomeness. Even if you're frustrated with Nao, but Akiyama-san is so BA I just can't.
SPEC - because Liar Game reminded me of Toda Erika and she is also SO BA in SPEC, you must watch this (total change from her Nao character)
HOTARU NO HIKARI SEASON 1 & 2 - I ALSO LOVE THIS DRAMA TO BITS AND PIECES I JUST LOVE THIS DRAMA YOU SHOULD TOTALLY WATCH THIS YOU WILL BE SQUEALING/FANGIRLING OVER BUCHOUUUU THE ENTIRE TIME
Orange Days - a much more calming, sentimental, and thoughtful drama. I love Tsumabuki Satoshi and he has great chemistry with Shibasaki Kou (they were going out that time after all)... it just makes you sort of think afterwards. IDK, that's how it was for me. And I loop the theme song by Mr.Children all the time....
Zenkai Girl - okay this drama is currently airing, and there are still 2 episodes left, but I am just going to recommend this one right now, because it really is just so cute, the characters and everything ugh it is just so flawless and I cry every episode, not because it's sad, but because I am moved by bits and pieces of the characters..
Nagareboshi - this is one of the two dramas that made me cry of happiness at the end, the other one also starring Ueto Aya.. it's just, a very simple drama. It's.. hard to describe. IDK, yet I found it very moving. And also I'm like in love with Takenouichi Yutaka, so...
Attention Please - the other drama that made me cry of happiness with Ueto Aya (clearly a huge fan of her here LOL), it's just so cute, about this rock band girl who ends up becoming a flight attendant, so cute, so cute, yeah, I think I'll rewatch this LOL
Slow Dance - I finished this recently, and I like the title of this drama, it does go by at a very leisurely pace, but the characters still draw you in..
Gokusen - this is a classic. LOL.
Long Vacation - actually this is more of a classic. Classic KimuTaku drama. It's just so.. beautiful. And I love KimuTaku, it's older but give it a try LOL
Aishiteru - I really like watching dramas like this, but idk if it's your... "piece of cake" LOL. It talks about how two families deal with a case where a young boy kills another young boy.. it's rather dark, but I really like watching family dramas
14 Sai no Haha - going along with family dramas. Again, not sure if this is your piece of cake, but everything, the acting, Shida Mirai is just amazing when she filmed this (she still is), basically Shida Mirai's character becomes a 14 yr old mom, and the drama centers on how she and her family deal with this
Bloody Monday season 1 & 2 - if you like 24 (the American TV show about anti-terrorism groups), then you will most likely like this
So this is all I can think of currently, I'm sort of not thinking straight (certain dramas have left my eyes dry... Princess' Man..........), but if I think of any more I will comment LOL. But this is already really long. LOL.
Agreed, agreed. If you start watching a Jdrama, you can tell it's a Jdrama. I think it's really a stylistic mold that they do.
And yeah, I feel like a lot of Jdramas are more theme-focused, making a lot of them more... slice of life. Things don't happen in Jdramas to compromise the end and get the main couple to get together. Things happen to develop the characters, to make them aware of the theme that the Jdramas has set. A lot of them end with an open ending because, well, life is pretty open ended.
And I agree with HYD. GOD I LOVED THAT. Rewatched it twice already.
So far I've only seen HYD, Juui Dolittle, a j-drama about a girl who gets help from Elephant God Ganesha (don't remember the title but it was really cool), another short drama with Shun Oguri and a bit of Hana Kimi (I had to stop watching that because of the bad video quality). But then, I don't even have a year in dramaland, everything is so new to me! :)
I already have Nodame cantabile stored in my computer but haven't seen anything of it yet because I'm currently watching Beethoven Virus and I don't want to mix them. I've heard of a few of the others but sine now they're recommended to me I'll try to get them too.
I want to rewatch HYD at some point too, except for the movie, that was kind of silly. :)
Thanks everyone, for the wonderful recommendations!
I will be queuing them up. And maybe give HYD another try.
It's great to know there are a lot of j-drama lovers out there. :)
@ arhazivory and NKB
Kimi wa Petto was the bomb! I thought it would be super super weird, but Sumire-chan and Momo made it work, and believably so. I watched it in anticipation of watching the soon-to-come Korean movie for it, but there is no way that Kim Han-eul and Jang Geun-suk can replicate or surpass the awesomeness of the J-dorama, and thus don't think I will even bother with the K-movie. Funny how things work out sometimes. (I say this as a fan of both Kim Han-eul and Jang Geun-suk.)
@ clichique
I agree that Zenkai Girl is a fun breezy watch. Well, I think it's veering into angsty territory, but the kids are SO ADORABLE. First time I'm watching something because I'm crushing on the cuteness of the kids, rather than the draw of the adults.
And, um, I only realized today the main male lead in Zenkai Girl is a NEWS member? I think I need to broaden my J-ent horizons a bit more. Doh.
YESYES! I love that romance and happily-ever-after does not need to be central to the story. K-dramas have a tendency to force it, even when the plot would work better without it.
I loved Matsumoto Jun in Kimi wa Petto, so I tried watching Hana Yori Dango. But a few episodes in, I realized I had loved MOMO, not Matsumoto Jun, because I couldn't stand Domyoji. So many people love Hana Yori Dango--I must be the sole outlier.
See, Domyouji was a total @(#*$&@#$!(#@$. In the Japanese version.
HOWEVER. Big however here.
HOWEVER.
You watch him go from @(#*$&@#($*&!#$ to a human. Someone who slowly, SLOWLY transgresses into regular human territory and while doing so, is endearingly cute, and yeah.
Also, a big reason why I am so in love with the Japanese version is because Inoue Mao's Makino is my favorite. She's totally a girl I would be friends with. She is so cool. Just. Yeah. She is awesome. And kicks butt.
No you're not the only one lol! I showed my friend Hana Yori Dango and she was completely horrified by Domyouji. No matter how much I reassured her that he's turns out to be quite an okay guy from being the @(#*$&@#$!(#@$ he was in the beginning, she would not budge and swore never to watch it EVER lol! However, if you want to change your mind you should watch the Taiwanese version of HYD called Meteor Garden. Wow. Now the Domyouji in that was..... let's just say there are no icons on my keyboard that can convey what he was.
But I definitely agree with Clichique that the Japanese version was my favourite because of Inoue Mao. She was light years better than any of the Makino's in any other version with Barbie Xsu of the Taiwanese version coming in second and Goo Hye Sun (as much as I respect and like her) coming in a miserable miserable last. Inoue is my favourite Japanese actress ever.
Last thing (I promise lol this is getting rather long) is I'm so happy to find another person who loved Kimi wa Petto! Even my fellow drama buddies think I'm weird for liking it. I admit that having a boy as a pet IS weird but Sumire and Matsu Jun made it so believeable!!
Tomo, give HYD another try. My sister was also appalled at Domyouji and honestly I hated him too. But its surprising how the slow transition of him becoming a human being moves you. At the end of it, you're left wondering...how did they pull that off? Its awesomeness.
Is it alright to love Inoue that much? I love the girl to bits! I watched her in Juui Dolittle with Oguri Shun (<3) and that was a great show too.
I would recommend watching Smile with MatsuJun. The theme of that one is racism and its quite poignant. Long Love Letter was very other-worldly but I really loved it and if we're talking about classics...Ikebukurou West Gate Park and Summer Snow is a must.
I know a while back I started like the first 5 minutes but wasn't sure, but then later ended up watching all episodes pretty much in one go.. It really is a friendship drama. LOL. I love it! (And Kame, too LOL)
I started to watch ep. 1 last night. It had the main school j-drama ingredients: the weirdness, the bullying, the odd behaviour, the mystery and the urban magic. It became interesting to me at about minute 46 when they decided to fix the girl and make her number 1! I wonder how they are going to do that. I suppose step one will be a haircut, right? :P
Even my younger brother, who is not into K-dramas or J-dramas or anything Asian, thought it was GREAT and transferred the files to his computer for future re-watching.
did you really dislike yamapi's acting? I haven't seen a yamapi drama in ages but if any role demanded anything of him it was kurosagi. was he really lacking in kurosagi?
I don't dislike his acting, but have the sense to realize he's not a great actor. (I think NwP was the exception, rather than the norm.)
I first saw him in Buzzer Beat. I didn't necessarily think he was strong or weak at acting. But then I watched Proposal Daisakusen, which I finished only for him, and I sensed a bit of the lack. Only THEN did I watch Nobuta wo Produce (I initially thought it was something about PRODUCE, as in VEGETABLE * DOH * slap forehead*), and saw the brilliant magic he had. And so his other projects, in comparison, seem weak.
I downloaded all of Kurosagi, but couldn't get past the first episode. I may attempt again.
With Japanese actors and singers and idols, I never think they're good looking at first glance, but I gradually become magnetically drawn to them forevermore. BLAST!
Actually, cancel that. Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (2007) was a visual feast for the eyes. They weren't joking about the Ikemen Paradise! Mizushima Hiro was gorgeous AT first glance.
Oops, went off topic, brain turned to mush talking about pretty boys. :P
I love YamaPi but agree that his acting lacks depth. His best role was Nobuta wo Produce where he broke out of whatever shell he was in but then he went back to being enclosed. Second to that role, his next best for me was Proposal Daisakusen.
I'm with you on Nobuta wo Produce. I watched this even before I knew who Johnny's were and who the three main lead actors were (and before I was aware of the general opinion that Johnny's (e.g., Yamashita) and Maki are known for below-average acting). I thought everyone was really good in Nobuta, esp. Yamashita. His character is so out there, yet he made it seem so real (like a person like him could exist in this world). It was heartwarming and the way it was photographed was beautiful as well. In my opinion, Yamashita's roles went down from there. I mean, I like some of the subsequent dramas he's been in (like Proposal Daisakusen and Buzzer Beat), but there was nothing special about his acting in those dramas, imo.
I love J-dorama because they do tackle more of a variety of plots and stories (though this crime procedural trend they have lately is sort of annoying). Kdramas seem to live and die by the romance. But with J-doramas, there is more of a human element. And I like how they can take seemingly mundane, everyday stories and flesh them out without making it super dramatic. It's all about taking a breath. My biggest nitpick with it is that I feel like J-doramas are always trying to teach a lesson or a moral, almost like those kids show I used to watch. It feels strange to me.
But I also love kdramas, because they make me breathless with the sweeping OSTs and OTPs.
Since you like Nobuta, you should also try Yankee-kun to Megane-chan. It's a school-drama about a gangster sort of guy and an enthusiastic sort of girl, who used to be a fearsome gangster.
I think tonight I'm finally going to start watching The Princess' Man. I was going to hold off b/c of classes starting up again. But the semester has been off to slow start. Anyway, I can't wait!
Question: Is anyone watching A Thousand Kisses? I don't usually watch long dramas but I saw the trailer and I'm curious.
Also, I haven't been on OT in.... forever. Hi guys!
All I am going to say is that, oh my god is ANYBODY HERE WATCHING THE PRINCESS' MAN?? ANYBODY??!! OTHER THAN ME?? LIKE HERE I AM, REWATCHING EPISODE 14 FOR THE THIRD TIME (what is wrong with me), CRYING MY EYES OUT FOR HALF AN HOUR FOR THE THIRD TIME (again, what is wrong with me), AND NOBODY TO TALK TO ABOUT IT??? (other than people on the Baidu forums, but it's like midnight over there and the threads have quieted down, it sucks)
The Princess' Man is just... amazing. And heartbreaking. And sad. And making my eyes dry every week. And I can't wait until the next week. And I know it'll be a tragic ending. And I know it's not going to end well. But I have to keep watching. Because everything about it is so tragically beautiful. Park Shihoo is so freaking amazing. So is Moon Chaewon. So is everybody else. So is the cinematography. It's so beautiful and it breaks my heart and I'm just going crazy here like GAH WHY. WHY. I HAVEN'T CRIED HALF AN HOUR STRAIGHT EVER. THEY BREAK MY HEART INTO LITTLE PIECES AND YET I SADISTICALLY ASK FOR MORE OF THIS, AT LEAST 10 MORE EPISODES??? WHY WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME.
In other news, Zenkai Girl also breaks my heart into little pieces. I think I see a pattern. But at least Zenkai Girl spoils me with the cuteness that is the children and the OTP... well not the OTP anymore. God. I am just dying here.
I'm all caught up and waiting for ep 9 too. Seriously Ryo kills me too. He's so lithe but oozes sex appeal and I don't understand how. And that smile.... *fans self*
I downloaded all episodes of Joker last night because its been on my planned to watch list for a while, but I'll be starting on it soon because I'll need to see Ryo again soon.
Hiya clichique!!!!!*hugs* Haven't heard from you for a long long time. We're all italicised here cos of the Curse of the Tilting Hand Towel. We started tilting last week...I now strongly feel that was a sign that clichique, she who alerted humans to the Global Tilting Phenomenon, would be surfacing this week.
I'm afraid I can't share your enthusiasm for Princess's Man. I like PSH and the Villain, but the Moon girl is so annoying. Why does she keep trekking all over, in the dead of night, with her maid? I mean, come on! Can young girls do that in Ancient Korea? And she had so many opportunities to tell him who she was, and she doesn't. I'm like AAARGHHHHHHHH the umpteenth time she stops/gets interrupted. The goons are terrible, they overact so much it's funny, not scary anymore. And when PSH revives miraculously after being slashed and left for dead, I'm like WHAT THE????!!!!! He goes shuffling into town looking like the walking dead, and it cracks me up. Seriously! I shuffled about like him, with one foot dragging, and creeped my daughter out the whole day after that. When he tries to strangle her, his eyes all big and glazy, and she starts choking, I'm laughing so hard. So I've stopped watching at ep 12.
The Princess' Man is awesome isn't it? It is so well done. It's insanely pretty, and has a great mix of court intrigue, romance and betrayal. I just love it! Love the OTP. And PSH dressed in ninja black? Just make me have to watch it! I dare you! :) (yeah, like that was a struggle) :)
i just started to watch princess' man, just because i've been recently interesting in saeguks and i'll watch anything park shi hoo *__* I REALLY REALLY LIKE IT SO FAR OMG AND I'M ONLY ON EPISODE 4. IT'S SO CUTE AND PRETTY. i'm saving the episodes to marathon eventually! (i'm surpised at my perseverance. lol.) i wish more people would watch this! i guess everyone's saeguk right now is warrior baek dong woo :p (although i'm intrigued by WBDS too.)
Hehe, right now, in nostalgic mode and watching back My Girl :)
When the first time I watch this drama 5 years ago, I'm totally falling so hard for JunKi.
Never understand why my friend lurve Lee Dong Wook over pretty super romantic and vulnerable JunKi. Yet, when I watch My Girl again today, I find Lee Dong Wook is deliciooooous. I don't get it ^^
Hi mywhityasmin. My girl was my first ever kdrama. I happened to watch a video on youtube where one of the scenes was from this drama and I though, hmmm... maybe I should give it a watch. a year and half later, here I am, watching kdrama's raw, sleeping way way past bedtime. waking up with eye bags.
Ahh.. nostalgia :)
he's definitely not pretty, very manly and wholesome looking. He's not really everyday ho hum,he'd definitely stand out in a crowd and when he smiles, or is angry, or sad, or expressing incredulity it's good to see him onscreen.
Was scanning down the latest posts and wondered why suddenly they became italicized. Maybe this post will come out that way, too. But no matter.
Just to say Hi as I am about to rush to the airport and catch a flight that will take me through three legs, and a total of about 20 hours of flying time.
Maybe I'll resurface in Nagoya; if not maybe in Detroit; if not there maybe when I get to DC. I shall be physically closer to some of you. MJP, TiaC, Cmrprindle (I believe you live in the East Coast). Am not sure where JB and GF are based.
Anyway, hope I can visit again and see what's cooking here in a few hours.
Ok, now I know its too late for this. Its probably too far away in the comments that you wont see this, but I wanted to ask you this for a long time. Maybe some people asked you this before, but will ask you anyway.!!!lol
My question to you Javabeans is; how do you select the music for the "Open Threads"? I mean is it the music you listen to? or do you just find it randomly?

Hi everyone!

:-) *HUGS*

And Happy OT again, yeah, I am late.

September 2, 2011 at 8:34 AM
OK Did we already talk about this?

Yeah, it had plenty of problems, but I loved it to death and still do (and I thought LMH looked awesome with that perm :) ) Should I watch the Japanese version?
jomo143
September 2, 2011 at 6:12 PM
The Japanese version is good, and really makes you cry.
The actors, wardrobe and scenery aren't as gorgeous, but it is the original.
Less episodes, too. I actually own it.
LMH is the reason I loved BOF. Broke my heart with his big eyes and fat tears.

September 2, 2011 at 9:11 AM

I highly recommend it, but it is a tough watch.

Hi Jomo! *hugs* Happy Weekend!

(His eyes! His eyes! So magnetic.) 16 extended family? You must not quite know what to do (other than watch dramas) when you are alone? I am so wierd. When I get time alone, I start cleaning like crazy! I am so anticipating Wee MJP's going to preschool in a couple of weeks. I've got a list of what I am going to be doing. Spackling and sanding and taping and draping and painting! Weeding and feeding and shaping and landscaping! Oooh, I can't wait for cooler weather to come!

September 3, 2011 at 7:08 AM

What do you think? Is it me?

There are always kisses that stand out - I loved the kisses in Coffee House! - but it'd be a good thing to generally have both characters löook like they actually want to be doing this.

I think what I like most about dramas such as Coffee Prince or Smile, You is that when the lead characters actually become a couple, kissing also becomes natural to them.

Sylvia
September 2, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Not the guy grabbing the girl and laying one on her while she stands frozen in motionless shock...

do you guys remember that was some "behind the scenes" moment after some BOF episode and the director was telling to the hot sweaty half-naked Lee Min Ho "don't open you're mouth! don't open your mouth!!" as they were shooting the kiss in the chalet? it was so awkwardly funny, as if LMH had to go against his natural instinct and tried to stop his lips move on their own :)

Happy Friday!

I don't like his voice. From the moment he spoke on the video tape, I kinda squirmed listening.

I really liked 9 ends 2 outs.
Though I enjoyed the recaps here at DB I found watching the drama City Hunter just too much and Myung-wol the Spy reminds me of Mary Stayed out All Night.
I'm definitely one for romance rather than action and though I can roll with stories when there are imperfections I don't like repetition.

okay guys, I was getting ready to call you on your poor taste this week after watching protect the boss.

Lol...and don't get me started on the parents.

I think lee su kyung is very funny and the eye candy is these dramas is eye candy.

I would definitely recommend Boys over flowers first. It's one of those dramas you can only appreciate the awesomness of when you're a newbie so you don't notice it's flaws.

I really want Chun to be the dad. But I have a feeling the GO just lied to him so he'd take care of JJ. Which I think is not fair. Chun would be an amazing father. I think he needs JJ more than the SS does.

So here is a shout out to all those hard working mums and dads, grandamas and grandpas on dramabeans, because i honestly have no idea how you all manage to work, look after kids AND have time to watch dramas!

September 2, 2011 at 8:47 AM

*spoiler warning*

Hi.

HAPPY 22nd~!!! I hope you have a blessed one. XD

I agree with you about how it feels weird to watch kdramas outside of the home. When I'm at home, i'm "in the zone" and I like the privacy to cry should some sad scene occur in the drama.

@belleza,
Psst...last OT, you were saying about K-actors in non K-dramas!

LOL.

but i have seen tid bids and indeed it looks awesome.

Oh, I think what you're doing is fantastic!

Happy Friday, all!

I guess?
Okay this is really long I'll stop LOL.

Wow! nice selection!!

Doh.

September 2, 2011 at 1:28 PM

NKB
September 2, 2011 at 3:53 PM

September 2, 2011 at 9:09 PM
Kimi wa Petto. <3 MatduJun was perfect.

September 2, 2011 at 4:27 PM

Is there a reason everything is in italics here?
