I forgot to add in my previous post – I was at work yesterday and one of the customers I started talking with was Korean. I told him I love watching Korean dramas and he asked me which actors/actresses I like. I told him Kim Sun Ah and Cha Seung Won and he was like ” Oh, you like the funny ones”. =)

      nhttuwe1rd, Hi! *Waves*

That was cool! You got a good response.

I met with possible future Teen MJP yesterday and he was surprised that I watch Asian dramas and he asks me with a puzzled face “Why?”

But I got to use the bing Translater with him yesterday in trying to explain some things. It worked great on the first sentence, but not so great on the second sentence.

Warning: the words, recreation center, translated into Chinese on Bing does not translate properly. Ha ha ha ha!

      • 51.1.1 Shiku

MJP are u adopting? That’s really great

      • 51.1.2 cmrprindle

MJP unnie, I get that reaction a lot from everyone I mention this to except the Korean ahjummas I’ve spoken to. Go figure.

While reading the Soompi site a while ago, came across two articles of interest (to me).

First, BOF seems to be a huge (forbidden) hit in NORTH Korea! Can’t even wrap my head around that one. Is it a bizarre take on SMW’s plot? What must the general populace think of the overwhelming wealth shown in the show?! Will they send spies to kidnap LMH and KHJ?! :)

Secondly, on a serious note it was just reported that Song Ji-hyo was rushed to the hospital for a bad reaction to IV fluids which were given to her on the set of her new drama.

It was reported that she had gotten 4 hours of sleep over 3 days of shooting, (plus she’s still doing Running Man) – and they wanted to “pep” her up for her drama scenes. The real kicker is that apparently she’s been known to have bad reactions to some of the meds used in the IV solutions (always thought it was just saline) and they gave it to her anyway!

This is just amazing. All those folks who poo-pooed HYS and her defiance over this kind of stress should take a long, hard look at what’s going on.
SJH is a girl in tip-top physical condition (evidenced by her participation in RM – girl can out-run and out-stay the boys) and this drama/stress has brought her to the emergency room. This is lunatic stuff.

    • 52.1 Shiku

Just heard about Song Ji Hyo I hope she feels better. I was hoping she wouldn’t get sick because shooting a saguek and running man at the same time is difficult. How can they give her IV fluids when she is allergic to it? This can kill someone.

    • 52.2 asianromance

That’s horrible! They could have killed her! These productions shouldn’t depend on IV fluids to sustain their actors and staff during these inhuman hours. They just need old-fashioned sleep. The production, in trying to “cure” her exhaustion – exhaustion to the insane hours- ended up being counter-productive. If only they had given her more hours to sleep. She’ll probably spend twice as long in the hospital now.

It’s sad that even when you try to set hours in your contract, just like what Han Ye Seul did, the production goes ahead anyways and makes you work these sort of hours or guilt-trip you into doing so.

      • 52.2.1 Cynthia

True. It just infuriates me, knowing how someone like “Ace Ji-hyo” can be worked to death by a production company – so imagine how difficult it must be for actors and actresses who aren’t as strong as she is. Really, they must be dropping like flies on all these dramas and it’s simply not being reported. Kim Sun Ah fainted on set w/SOAW and that was barely a blip on the media radar.

I just hope that those hearings that HYS is testifying at will make some kind of difference. But really, nothing is going to happen until the acting community wakes up and becomes unionized.

Is anyone else but me watching The Musical??!! I have to say, i’ve been pleasantly surprised by its awesomeness. It just seems like no one is watching/writing about it

    • 53.1 Shel

It looked interesting, who is showing it? I haven’t seen it on Viki or Dramafever yet (the two sites I use the most….but maybe I just haven’t noticed it).

    • 53.2 Cynthia

Hi, Books – we discussed the Musical several times here, upthread = check page 1 for comments.
      :)

      • 53.2.1 Cynthia

Shel@ – it’s on DramaFever – just watched the second episode.

My immediate reaction is that this is putting off the same vibe as Heartstrings/YFFM – it looks the same, sounds the same and the initial plot set-up seems to be taking a really long time to get going, both in introducing characters and pushing the story.

Once again, my dislike for GHS’s inadequate acting is getting in the way – mouth moues, hair-shaking and patting/finger-combing her own head continually, shuffling along in her horrible white JanDi clunky shoes, (she’s even delivering milk on her bicycle! Where’s Ji-Hoo?) and so far, girl hasn’t changed her clothes once?!

Where the hell is the director here? It’s like he’s giving her free rein. Fortunately, the other actors are really good, especially Choi. The music is terrific.

I’m balanced on the edge for this one. Episode 3 will be the final determination for me. To Queue or not to Queue. That is the question.

    • 53.3 Birdie

I am watching it. I must say this little gem is just the right thing to watch to de-stress after a week of hard work. It is entertaining with lots of humour. GHS character is tomboyish , yet adorable . You can catch it on Dramafever. It s not everyone cup of tea,but give it a try and enjoy the ride.

  4. 54 kookicookie

So I’ve been wondering foe a while why Japan and Korea care about celebrity blood type. I’ve always read Japanese manga and in the character bios they include blood type. and recently with the star of you’re my pet you guys mentioned blood type and his personality. could you maybe elaborate on why this is important?

    • 54.1 Shel

From what I can tell, they associate certain character traits with blood type. Not sure what they base it on.

  5. 55 Shel

Hi all! Happy Friday. Kind of late getting here today. Hope everyone is doing well. I’m doing pretty good, after spending a week sick. But, upside is it’s a good excuse to do nothing, or very little anyways, but watch tv. Downside is it takes twice as long because I have to keep rewinding back to the parts I slept through, lol.

Marathoned Full House, liked it for the most part. That is one seriously clean house. I have big windows like that on the ocean-facing side of my house. I want Rain to come wash them for me.

Still LOVING PTB. Anxiously awaiting subs for Ep 14.

THat’s about it. Back to my PMS-ing 14 yr old and her homeschool.

OH, and LOVE the song choice today. Big Ella F fans here.

Princess Man is my all time favorite drama. Every aspect from the cinematography to the gorgeous direction and the phenomenal acting from the WHOLE CAST. Moon Chae Won is amazing, her emotion is so genuine and raw. She makes her character portray such a realistic, heartbreaking love. Park Shi Hoo made me a fan, he portrays his conflicting emotions so realistically. The main couple has this amazing chemistry, even when they are thinking about each other, you can feel their genuine love. Each character has two sides, and the actors play the conflicting emotions to perfection. I pray hard that JAVABEANS and GIRLFRIDAY watched this show, and hopefully if they can to PLEASE right a review, or their reaction to this amazing drama. No drama is complete without reading a thought-invoking review/recap by javabeans and girlfriday.

  8. 58 rainerust

Hi DB-ers! A bit late as usual – I blame it on the time difference. Anyway I recently started to watch Season 2 of Wrath of God (without watching Season 1) and I LOVE it but now I’m dying to know what happened on Season 1! Does anyone happen to know say, anyone who did a review or a recap or a summary of this OCN drama that you could refer me to? Sigh this is what happens when non-Koreans try to watch cable – I couldn’t even find subs of Season 1!

Anyway hope everyone’s having a knockout weekend. I really wish some lighthearted comedy will kick in soon cos most of the dramas I’m following at the moment seem to have hit that depressing rut in the kdrama lifecycle. Sigh.

  9. 59 cv

Why is it that most K-dramas start out really strong and then goes down hill towards the second half?
There’s only a handful of awsome kdramas (great storyline-meaningful, great actors/actresses, great ending, and keeps the fan coming back for more.

Here are a couple kdramas that I think had it going for them until the writer couldn’t come up with a better ending?

Lie to me-I thought it was awsome until the end-short, didn’t wrap it up in a nice package.

city hunter-l love the drama but I wished the ending wasn’t hurried, it was so short, could have lengthen it a bit more-made it more understanding even if it was open to interpretation.

Dramas I thought had a great storyline and ending.

I actually think a lot of them start of pretty weak, meander a bit and then go crazy and then calm for 10 minutes. But what I’m really loving about dramas is something I used to hate: No season 2. When the story is done, it’s done and you can cry for a few days while watching the new drama and then it becomes a fond memory. I think your list is a bit lacking.

      • 59.1.1 cv

Yes! that’s something I like about kdramas too! I like a drama that begin and end in one season. Too many seasons can really drag the story.

I’m sure there is more great dramas out there. I haven’t watch all of them so I can only say for the ones that I have watched.

      • 59.1.2 malta

“start of pretty weak, meander a bit and then go crazy and then calm for 10 minutes.”

this is a good description of many kdramas :D

I’ve been promising and promising and promising that I was going to write something for the in-between time in The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry, and although I’ve started it I can’t seem to finish this 5-parter.

I do, however, have the first story done. I must apologize somewhat for the style and the ending. It’s supposed to be the opening for a larger work, but I think it’s okay as a standalone. I hope it’s okay…

    Anywho, Happy Weekend everyone!

    1. The girl that called him “Oppa”

Ha Min Jae smiles and looks down at Oh Se Na hanging onto his arm. She’s surprisingly heavy. He’s too savvy to say that to her, and too smart to say it to anyone else, but he thinks it awfully hard.

“Is oppa feeling alright?” she asks.

Smiling, Min Jae quickly clears the expression on his face, mentally kicking himself all the while. He knows he shouldn’t have tried dating so soon after Lee Shin Young left for her assignment in Finland. (And why Finland? he wonders, not for the first time. Wasn’t it even colder than Korea, and for longer?) “It’s nothing. The concert is coming up–”

He doesn’t even have to lie. Se Na makes the excuses for him. Convenient, that. Min Jae almost smiles again before remembering he’s supposed to be concerned and distracted. He blames this on Shin Young, too — this forgetting how to be a player. Because of her he’s spent much of the winter being first a suitor then a lover, and now he’s rusty. It’s a good thing his hyung is well-married. Any advice he’d have for hyung now would be suspect.

What he can’t blame Shin Young for are all the things he doesn’t feel for Se Na. There’s no excitement, no thrill, no sparks. She’s very pretty–maybe, probably even prettier than Shin Young, but his pulse doesn’t jump when he sees her. Any plans they make together beyond the upcoming concert is more duty than privilege.

No one seems to notice, much, except his mother, but he rarely hides from her.  He hadn’t hidden Shin Young from her, not to start.

“I know why your expression is so sour.” She stopped clearing their dinner from the table to push his hair out of his face and cup his cheek. She tilted his face so that he had to look up at her. “You’re still getting over Lee Shin Young. Give it time. Maybe you shouldn’t have tried dating again so soon.”

Still sitting, Min Jae covered her hand with his. “Oma, I thought you liked Se Na.”

“I do. Oh Se Na seems like a nice girl and she comes from a good family. I won’t lie and say that I wish Lee Shin Young were here instead. You know I disapproved.  But I also know how it is when your heart breaks.” She began clearing the table again.

Min Jae watched his mother, this new, almost-happy creature he sometimes didn’t recognize. “Lee Shin Young told me to live my life, to date girls my age,” he told her. “She didn’t want me to wait for her, and Oh Se Na has always been obvious that she was interested.” His mother moved from the dining room table to the kitchen table and back again as he talked. He stood the next time she went into the kitchen. He followed her and began washing the dishes she had brought out. “I think Oh Se Na is exactly the kind of girl Shin Young would have wanted me to date.”

His mother nodded. “I agree with you and Lee Shin Young. My advice is that you should have waited more than a week to begin dating.”

They had lapsed into silence while Min Jae washed and thought. Whatever conclusion he had been looking for hadn’t been forthcoming, so he followed his mother into the laundry room when he was done, watching her as she sorted his clothes. She’d glanced back at him, briefly, and flashed him a smile–Choi Sang Mi the stranger peeking through.

“How are things between you and Yoon Sang Woo?” he’d said eventually, trying to coax the stranger out of his mother.  Talking to her had been preferable to trying to process his mother’s words.

But, of course, words spoken don’t disappear. The more time he spends with Se Na, the more he thinks on the things his mother has said.

It’s a relief and a terrible surprise when Se Na unwittingly puts the nail in the coffin of their relationship later that afternoon. They are all, his band and hers, in the studio on-campus working out a few new songs that will either be part of Purple Rain’s playlist or go to Se Na’s Orange Map.

The first three are very straightforward yeses and nos. This one, however…  Min Jae doesn’t like it, but the band does. Se Na tries it out anyway, because min Jae’s not convinced, but it is obviously not meant for her.

“Oppa, this one is for you, not me,” she says with all seriousness. Not for the first time, Min Jae wishes that studio-Se Na was all-the-time-Se Na.  ”You’re just not ready to play it yet because it’s so different from everything else in the set list.”

    Everyone agrees.

“I know there’s not a lot of time until the concert, but hold onto this one and come back to it. Trust me. You’re just in a different mode right now.”

Frowning, he says, “What if I’m never in this mode?” He sounds petulant and even Se Na, who is studio-Se Na for now, looks unimpressed with his childish stubbornness.

“Then even though you and this song sound like you belong together, it isn’t part of who you are and should go to someone else. Someone new,” she adds lest he try to pawn it off on her again.

There’s a tense silence, and Min Jae feels the foolishness of his words. He’s the leader. He’s also the oldest. He should be setting an example. Nodding to her, he says, “You’re right, Se Na. I’ve been acting poorly,” he says to them all. “Forgive me. Let’s put this one down for now, as Oh Se Na suggests. We’ll try again tomorrow?”

They all agree with a resounding, “Ne!” and the tension is broken. Almost.

More than being the leader and the oldest, Min Jae is also the only one of them who knows that two conversations have just happened, with two questions answered.

It’s no longer a matter of whether he will break up with Oh Se Na but when. As they sort through the music sheets strewn across the floor to put them in play-order, Ha Min Jae wonders just how bad it will be when he does.

    -Fin-

        cmrprindle,

I like this as a short. Would you consider doing a series of vignettes of both of their lives during the separation, sort of a like a ball bouncing between them, such that the unfinished ending gives even more satisfaction? I feel like strict adherence to chronology might be foolish, but ideally, the characters would be moving forward, only to meet again as what they had become.

        Hope you will :)

    • 63.2 ✐ iZzie ✐

I enjoyed reading it. Thanks for sharing this, CMR! : ) I can’t wait for Lee Shin Young’s part of the story.

Um, so, like, I wasn’t actually planning on writing from Lee Shin Young’s POV. In fact the name of the story is “Four Girls Ha Min Jae Never Dated (One Twice)”. But, now that izOcha has put it out there, I’m seriously considering it.

Dramafever has it. They’ve been uploading some old dramas lately…they just recently got Winter Sonata and Full House also.

  15. 65 faridah2201

Currently really into the Musical, mostly because it manages to handle it comedic and dramatic scenes very well. Plus Daniel Choi is so cute in it.

I did not like BOF so I was worried about GHS but she brings a whimsical and sweet nature to her character which I am really enjoying. Here’s hoping it keeps the comedy and drama balance throughout the show.

  16. 66 come2noona

Yoo Seung Ho apparently had a cameo in You’re Beautiful. Any one know where in that drama he appears? I have seen You’re Beautiful twice and I can not place him! TIA!

Was it in the convenience store where Mi-nyeo wanted to buy seaweed soup for Tae-kyung’s birthday? However he only appeared for a split second. He was paying for his purchase if didn’t remember wrongly.

  17. 67 IzOcha

    Happy Saturday!
    OT,

I watched Full House for the first time recently. Wow, Rain’s character is irritating! And the plot of his development is somewhat non existent, and the girl…not really on board with her character either…I wish Min-hyuk was shown to have more reason for his earnestness towards her. I almost feel its like the competition between the two cousins on protect the boss. Yet, on PTB there is more complexity to the relationships, and time seems to be a more apparent in the development of the story. I feel like Full House could have taken place all in three months, since the weather is unchanging somehow. With those gribes aside, I also found it an endearing rom com with many sweet beats.

    • 67.1 Shel

I’m with you on Rain’s character there. I think the whole story could have been told in probably half the episodes because he never really grew or changed all that much. He obviously loved her, but couldn’t tell her….and they never revealed any reason why it would be so hard for him to say it. His nasty temper never really got much better. But, there were some nice moments. Although, not enough to warrant 16 hours of watching time.

That being said, he can come wash my windows anytime. :0)

My favorite character though, was grandma. She was great!

      • 67.1.1 IzOcha

haha Shel! Its true! Kim Sung-Soo could come over to cook dinner anytime, too :) esp since he even brings the wine.

He is gorgeous in a classical way. I want to draw him, but don’t want to watch any of his other dramas or rewatch full house…will have to find another way.

I liked the grandma and the dad…the dad reminds me of an uncle so I was happy when he was there due to familiarity.

  18. 68 Myung Wol

I thought the plot of Myung Wol the Spy was complete, outrageous fantasy, but it seems like it’s actually not so far from reality… But now I read that in 1978 filmmaker Shin Sang Ok and actress Choi Eun Hee were abducted to North Korea to work on the production of propaganda movies. The concept sounds familiar… Creepy!

    • 68.1 ajbny

that’s a joke isn’t it! I started watching spy 2 weeks ago and only got as far as the 2nd episode but I plan to pick it up soon.

    • 68.2 laya

Yes, I remember something about that. I think it was featured in Reader’s Digest. Truth is stranger than fiction, indeed.

  19. 69 Shel

So….looking for any opinions about Winter Sonata. I haven’t seen it, Dramafever is claiming it to be a classic, etc. How makjong is it? I really don’t like the weepy, drawn out stories where everything could be resolved if someone just opened their stupid mouth and told someone what the heck was going on. I can’t remember which ones, but I know I’ve seen at least 3 or 4 where I”m shouting “just tell her, you idiot!” at the screen.

But, if it’s well acted or doesn’t drag on unneccessarily, a tearjerker now and again isn’t a bad thing.

    So, any opinions?

    • 69.1 RayDa

Judging from your comment I don’t think you will like it.
      The heroine is really weepy.

I personally thought that the plot was outrageously unbelievable and the heroine drove me nuts with her inability to make up her mind.

I really don’t understand why the Japanese ahjummas went so batshit crazy over that drama. I’m Japanese by the way…My Korean husband watched it with me to see what the fuss was about and he quit watching in the middle saying “What a Ddapddap-hae drama!”

Anyone here likes to read PNR (paranormal) / historical / contemporary romance?

I’d like to gush about them time to time but unsure if DB is the right place to do it. So please speak up if names such as Ivy, Cole, Ward, Singh, SEP, Heyer, Balogh, McNaught etc ring a bell!

  21. 71 beggar1015

Thanks to Hulu.com, I can now jump on that bandwagon known as Ahjusshi/The Man From Nowhere. This is the first time I’ve seen this Won Bin everyone gushes over. In the first half of the movie, when he had that shaggy hair and dark suit, I kept having Kim Nam Gil flashbacks. (Ahhhhhhh, Nam Gil! Are you out of the army yet?!?!?!?! But I digress…)

The movie kept my attention for two hours, and I did tear up a couple of times. While I don’t think its the greatest thing since sliced bread, I would recommend it. Unless you have a tender tummy, as there are buckets and buckets of blood.

  22. 72 ahjummabunny

so, my sister and I found a pojang mogo this weekend and we ate delicious dukboki and ramen. They had jok bal on the menu but it’s a special dish. Everything was delicious and we used our korean to order and we were complimented on our great pronunciation and we got a free fried snack. Anyway the place is at the corner of union and roosevelt and the ahjummas are very nice.
