Can I just say... all of my Korean elementary school students were aware of his death, and found it salient enough to bring it up in class...
Yeah, the US is globally dominant, and blah blah blah, but can you all think of an entrepreneur from another country whose passing even 6th-graders in the US would all be aware of?
He was very unique, but I hope Apple continues on and surprise and delight us as Steve did. Sad to say though that I'm one of those who were waiting for an iPhone 5 last Tuesday and instead got disappointed with news of the iPhone 4S.
Anyway, am currently re-watching City Hunter and finding things I've missed during the second/third time I've watched it. ;)
He was working until about a month ago, he surely went fast after he left Apple. Mr Shel worked at Apple until last week, and I could swear we just saw Steve at CafeMac a couple of weeks ago. But, maybe it's been longer than that. It's gonna be weird not seeing him there....
Pancreatic cancer is really one of the most aggressive cancers out there and it is fortunate he was able to fight it for 7 years when survival rate is lower.
I hope his family will be able to get through this difficult time.
I remember him always being there and not that he's not it seems unreal. As I type this on a mac I feel sad. The man was brilliant and really contributed so much to society. I'm glad that such an influential man was influential because he had a good head on his shoulders, and not for nefarious reasons.
I was never really into Apple products (big fan of Pixar though!), but when I heard of his passing, it felt like an era has ended. It's hard to imagine a world without Steve Jobs. I don't think there will be another innovator as amazing and influential in my lifetime.
This week I watched Princess' man. I was keeping away from it since I thought it was going to be a sad ending, but I decided to try it anyway. And after watching 13 episodes I'm going, yeah! so glad I tried it. Don't you just love how they managed to put a brooding shower scene(read bucket of water over half naked body) in a saguek?
WBDS was so awesome this week!!!! I fell in love with Ji Chang Wook all over again. Except of course when someone hugged him. To those of you who think DS and JS are the OTP, I'd like to say that I haven't yet lost hope. Lots of things can happen in one episode. JJ with the Painter Dude? No.Way. And if YW dies... I will not buy the DVD.
I hated the way Dae Ung Died. Still can't believe he's completely dead and not mostly dead.
And which drama goes on for 28 episodes without one kiss scene? not one! It's not like I'm asking for a brooding shower scene... just one kiss. Is that asking too much?
Monday is a holiday! Yippee! Happy thanksgiving to those celebrating it.
I agree... WBDS was fantastic this week. Granted, I've only managed to see episode 27, but it was really good!
I'm kind of sad, though... after all these weeks of PLEADING for Dae Ung to die, I actually started to feel really bad for him in this episode, and then was really sorry when his new self died. (Guess I'm kind of a sucker, right?)
And this was the first episode when I actually felt a little tension between DS and JS... I still don't particularly like them as a couple, though.
Finally, yeah... so many episodes, and so little skin and skinship. What's the problem? There's a fight scene like every 10 minutes... surely they could spare some time for some lovin'... plus, with all that fighting, the men must surely get sweaty... don't they want to wash up somewhere (shirtless, of course)?
WBDS was awsome! (sigh) One more episode! I wonder what will happen in the end?
As for DS and JS-agree. Haven't seen much of a romance(aka hugs and kisses) but when they look at each other, well, you can tell they are into each other. :)
That in it's own way is sweet too-so old fashion. LOL
I started on a princess man but couldn't get into it at the beginnning. Maybe i'll give it a try again someday. :P
Am I the only one who is kind of dissapointed in DS/JS couple? Why did they put all those little hints there about DS/JJ and JS/YW? I feel cheated. Little bit. Well I will survive :-))
There's been no hints besides a look here or there... LOVE this show but the romance department is a bit lacking... They had 29 eps, surely they didn't run out of time to explore the romance! :(
YW's love for JS is definitely pretty much in the forefront of the show. Similarly JJ's love for DS. Both of them sacrifice too much for their love.
Now with DS, there was this one hint where he pauses in the middle of a fight with SS and thinks about JJ. This was during the time that JJ was kidnapped by Dae Ung. Now unless he's in love with her, would that happen? And also, he's been so very uncomfortable with JS in the later episodes. It was only in ep 28, out of the blue, where they showed some emotion between the two. Which is why I feel that the OTPs should be JJ/DS and YW/JS. If the writers go with DS/JS I think they are just doing it to irritate us viewers. Unless ofcourse the korean viewers prefer the DS/JS couple.
I hear Korean audiences are fans of Ji Sun's character but I personally find her completely dull and waste. Her role in the beginning with the tattoo and everything at least gave her character a purpose but now she just stands around and does nothing IMHO. Plus, she has NO chemistry with Dongsoo.
I was hoping one day Dongsoo would realize how kickass Jin Joo is but alas I guess it wasn't meant to be. He doesn't deserve her anyways! I love him but bad Dongsoo.
They should have just completely left the romance angle out of the show if they were only going to explore it at such a minimal level. I honestly feel like they used it as a ploy to lure female audiences in but it failed to serve any purpose in the long run.
The kiss between JS and DS in the trailer was the best scene they had and it wasn't even from the show itself! http://youtu.be/QG05uWhUjwI
Yeah. I know. A bad and unsatisfying romance is worse than no romance at all. Maybe the writers will redeem themselves in the last episode? pretty please writers?
Sigh. Watching the trailer again after all this time really depresses me to no end. With the first few viewings, it made me go all weak in the knees and hyperventilating over how awesome WDBS was gonna be... and then 28 episodes later, I'm really not sure how to think anymore. Although I did find DS and JS's nighttime courtyard encounter in Episode 11 to be extremely romantic, we just haven't seen that same level of lust... um, I mean, courtship in future episodes. I'm hoping for some sort of redemption with the Finale... pretty please?
@ Cherkell, I know. There is absolutely no lust between them. DS's teen crush on her just doesn't count as true love. And JJ did soooo much for him. Not that gratitude is a reason for falling in love, but still....
'And which drama goes on for 28 episodes without one kiss scene?'
A lot of sagueks (77eps Yi San, 81eps Jumong, 200eps EWG, 104eps IYSS, 62eps QSD) don't show kiss scenes, shower scenes or skinship. Though I was shocked in Age of Warriors when I saw that a way to treat a poisoned Archfiend was to have a beautiful woman lay down with him. Something about bodyheat melting away poison. Then on the same series they had a scene where this girl was stripping for the archfiend and they slapped a PG14 on the particular episode.
Anyway, my fave shower scene will always be General Chao's in Chuno (if only they removed that misplaced object that was obstructing the view).
You should try it! It is my most fave saguek and the most historically accurate that I have seen.
Reasons to watch:
-larger than life characters e.g. Archfiend, Gen Uibang and his iron club, Kyung Dae Sung (my heart breaks).
-the story is incredibly well paced and engrossing for 158 eps (very addicting).
-non-cliche women. Lately sagueks have only had the two types of women: damsel in distress princess type and the warrior girls but this show has a rich array of women characters who can go head-to-head with their male counterparts. The Empress Dowager is my personal favorite.
-memorable fight and death scenes (way better than WBDS)
I have been trying to find AoW for some time now and see that dramafever has added it to their upcoming viewing list and azntv has all epis now. Eureka! Another historical to watch....
happy Friday.. so how was your week?
i've been revisiting old dramas of late and I watched 'Tatta
Hitotsu No Koi' again.. IMHO, the best drama about the'ideal, young, first serious love'.
realistic(though it is hard to believe that the rich girl-poor guy love
would work out in real life)
beautiful OST to top it..
ohh, the initial days when one is hopelessly in love!! noone should miss it..
and who else is looking fwd to '1000 day promise'..Su Ae looks amazing in the promos and
I'm sure KRW make it worth the 2 yr wait(he looks too skinny though.. expected him to beef up
after MS)..
and now that 'Princess's Man' has a happy ending, i'm tempted to watch it.. worth it or too melodramatic?..
‘Tatta htotsu No Koi’ is one my favorites. You know, I too thought that the rich-girl-poor-guy would have problems later on in life when things get tough. But the way they tackled that in the drama was very nice. The heroine moves out of her parents house and becomes a teacher. Her choice had nothing to do with the hero since they had already broken up at that time.
Given that she is living a middle class life anyway, I think they'd be able to make it work out.
me too.. i keep away from Melos but give me anything with KRW(not as second lead though..my heart would brk..kept awy from snowman coz of it) and I'm game..he is so good..had diff roles in my lil bride, LS in harvard and Attic Cat and was equally convinceing and lovable in each..liked him in every drama i watched of his..
Oh no! MJP unnie and Boys-of-MJP, not something new :( It sucks when illness makes the rounds in a family, but that seems to be the way it always happens, and I guess this is just the start of the season. I hope you guys get over this one soon, and that it's the last you get for a while. Usually if I get sick early in the season I'm good for a while. *fingers-crossed* Of course sometimes I'm just kinda sickly all season :-/
Jumma, you're so good at remembering these things from week to week. I have the memory of a goldfish and it's a minor miracle when I remember anything about anyone at all :-/
Looked at a few minutes of that off a recommendation I got here last week - love Kame, so it was easy to say yes, LOL. It's on my list to watch at some point!
I loved how organic ThNK was....just so beautiful....Kame totally nailed Hiroto!! and, the OST is sublime--totally made my heart sing and was key in embodying the heady Hiroto-Nao love!! *sigh le sigh*
What is this Tatta htotsu No Koi? It sounds like a Japanese drama. Can I find it on dramacrazy, which is my usual go-to place since mysoju an be so...y'know, random. It also sounds like the guy and girl don't get together? How unusual is that in a drama?
TGIF everyone! I have a statistics project to do, so I'm considering one that compares the number of wrist-grabs, back hugs, piggyback rides, brooding shower scenes, and soju shots in rom-coms versus say, melodramas or saeguks. What fun to be able to honestly say, "I HAVE to watch this drama! It's part of my homework!" Anyone want to help me?
You talking overall drama...like comparing a whole series to another entire series? I hope you have lots of time, lol. :0) Or just a few episodes of each?
that'll be a labor intensive, and time consuming work. Though full of pleasures.
But probably you should narrow more the objective; other ways you'll never end with that project
Good luck, and let me know if you want help :)
I think it will work, if everyone here draws on their knowledge of what they have watched in the past. But I do think that you may want to narrow down the field and do a "sampling" of Kdramas to represent the market. Like if you did the stats on dramas that were only 16 episodes long and were marketed as rom-coms, versus the over 16 episode dramas and the melos.
To be accurate, you also will want to be year specific on what dramas you watch to catch the trends. ie. Shower scenes have not always been so popular, so if you want to get a good sampling then you are going to want to stick to dramas made within the last, 5 years or so I think, maybe even less than that.
But you really want to make sure you don't waste your time looking through Kdramas that won't contain that type of stuff. You know stay away from things like Vampire Prosecutor and Girl K and Giant and Sparkle, Sparkle/Shining.
Did you already think about this type of stuff? If so, just ignore me then.
Wow, you're so smart! Statistics is the one field (okay, maybe besides math past algebra) that has always scared me to death. I so much admire people who can understand and talk about these things, cause I can have all the education in the world, and I'll still never get it (math and statistics).
Yeah, funny story. I recently (a few months ago) got this job editing scientific and medical papers for Koreans who want to submit them to international journals. Now, I have a lot of scientific/medical background, but it just happens that one of the first papers they sent me was FULL of statistics... like, the entire paper was equations and Greek symbols. I felt like such a jackass, but I had to tell them that I couldn't understand that paper to save my life.
If only I had known you then, MJP... maybe you could've helped me!
It was statistics that made me give up my psychology major, well statistics and the fact that in 2 years of college I had more english major credits than psychology.
LOL. That was exactly what happened to me. I considered many different majors during my first few years as an undergrad, but ultimately, the field of English allowed the most flexibility in class choices, so I settled on that. (Fickle to the core, that's me ;) )
@MJP
Yes I am an english major journalism minor. At my school people followed up their english major with law school. I worked in pr for awhile and then transferred to different department within my company which is more technology based. I think I'll go to law school or at least attempt to get a clerkship with a judge and take the bar at some point. But I don't really have a passion for anything that should make money, or I don't want to be happy at work.
I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do in my second season of life. I did the job where it was just a job for 20 years. Now I want to do a job that I love and can receive joy in doing.
Well, I've done a lot of different things, from publishing/editing and communications to family medicine and psychiatry.
And I guess what I've learned (and this is ONLY for me) is that -- whether it's me or the job -- at some times in my life, I would really rather have walked into traffic than gone into work on a particular day... so for me, as long as I don't feel like that about my job, things are pretty damn good.
CRAZY week. Only had time to watch (finally) the last ep of PTB. I'm gonna miss that show. :0( I think Ji Sung may replace KJH as my all time fave. Except he's short...shorter than me, anyway. But what a cutie.
Today is my anniversary. I've been married to Mr Shel for 16 years. I've known him for close to 30, though. Took us a long time and several life detours to get us from best buds to married. (I set him up on a blind date with his first wife. He's forgiven me. Ha!) It's almost worthy of a k-drama, only without the chaebol and the evil mom. Lots of twists, turns and weird coincidences. Sometimes we speculate on how it would be if we'd married back then, but I have a feeling that things are just as they should be. (Maybe he needed to be married to crazy lady to appreciate me, lol) I'm very blessed and fortunate to have such a sweetie now, and we'll be off today and probably the weekend celebrating.
LOL. I'm old, I remember watching men walk on the moon with my dad. And the hoohah over woodstock. And (albeit, a fuzzy memory) of watching JFK's funeral procession. And bell bottoms, tie dye, 'fros, and (gasp!) disco (although I hated it). I was more a Rush/Yes/Pink Floyd. Nix on the BeeGees.
Holy ish, Shel-nim! You've been married for 16 years??? I haven't even been alive that long!
OK, that's a lie, but still, damn! Congratulations! Although, if you're old enough to be married for 16 years, then you're totally an ahjumma, and I need to give you the respect that is your due. Ergo....
[formal speech] Shel-umma-nim, Happy Anniversary-eyo! I, to you, many more years of happiness wish-imnida! [/jondaemal]
You betcha! My husband was my faux brother and I had to pick him or my sister because she needed a brain transplant which I couldn't give her so my faux mother disowned me and went abroad to Korea (where else?) and I met a rich doctor who offered to marry me but who marries doctors (in dramas)?
So I picked the Air Force guy with a big heart.
lol:D..1 way to try and cover up your age..cant go by marriage annivs to determine the age though..been married for only 2 yrs, but known my hubby for 9 yrs..
Seriously, Jomo? I was impressed by Shel's 16 years of marriage, and now you have upped the ante with 22 years of marriage! Wow, you just blew my mind all over YOUR face. Amazing.
Happy Anniversary to both of you (and to anyone else this applies to)!
Shel and Jomo, I don't know you personally, of course, but from what I know of you from your postings here, you both have created really wonderful families, and I (as a terminally single person) really admire that.
And happy anniversary to you, too, Jomo the Wise and Mr. the Wise! You and Shel give me sch hope for marriage in general. It doesn't have to go down in flames! It can rise and be on fire. ;)
Here's the Readers Digest Condensed Version (if any of you remember those, lol)
1. Met in college in a singing group, he was dating my roomies sis, who dumped him.
2. He kept asking who he should take out and not brave enough to say ME, I set him up with a cute redheaded dancer. FOr which my mom gave me all kinds of grief, because she thought he was cute. He was.
3. They got married, had The Boy (now in law school), moved 16 times in 14 years and I lost track of them. In the meantime, she was crazy/bitchy nuts. But who knew? Her dad was a nice guy...he was my insurance agent.
4. I moved to another state in the meantime.
5. Vacationing with my parents in yet ANOTHER state, we go to the local church, where he gets up to speak and my sister freaks out....Hey Shel, isn't that....???
6. It was. My family and he and his wife and kid go on a picnic together.
7. Few years later...newly divorced, he visits his brother in my state where he is set up with 2 blind dates a day for a 4 day weekend. Someone named Cassandra stood him up (almost named my daughter after her, lol). He tells his brother his friend Shel used to live there and he's gonna try and look her up.
8. He catches me on the way to a camping trip with friends and comes over to chat.
9. It took about another year of very expensive phone calls and plane trips to decide that we weren't just friends anymore. Got engaged on July 4th 1995, planned to marry the next January, got a HUGE phone and American Express bill and moved it up to October.
You know what finally got me.... He left after coming to visit in the middle of June, and we had plans to spend the 4th of July together. Before he left, he went to the florist down the street from my office and prepaid for them to deliver me one rose with a message he'd written every work day until he came back.
About half way through that, my boss (almost an extra dad, I loved him) called me into his office and wanted to know "what was going on???". LOL
Shel - Ji Sung is like, 5'8'' - right? I just remember thinking ok, tall enough for me (5'5 1/2'') although I do love a good six footer :)
Jomo - haven't seen KSR yet but have it queued up - busy week. What time I've had has disappeared down the well of episodes 6-12 of Coffee Prince. OMG...Gong Woo. He can't replace my Ji Sung but in this role, at least...his acting is phenomenal and really makes him grow on you, even to the point that at first I found him not attractive at all and now I can't imagine why I ever thought that. All those boys, plus YEH. They have a serious place in my heart.
Wait a minute -- how did I miss this? You're 6'? I love you even more than I already did. Depending on the shoes I wear, I could be over 6' fairly easily... how'd you manage to come to terms with a shorter guy (even if he's not THAT much shorter... still... I know how it feels to be taller)?
LOL. I dated a guy pre-Mr Shel who was 5' 7" I think. He may have been the shortest. Mr Shel is also exactly 6'. I don't wear heels because I had knee surgery several times as a teenager and it's just painful. The funny thing is that I'm all legs and he's all torso: we're the same height standing up, and he's taller when we sit down. He has to pull up the driver's seat when he drives after me cuz I push it ALL the way back.
I know that we are all pretty superficial on here with our love for our actors, but in real life pretty looks are kind of the icing on an already wonderful cake. He tells me now that most of the men he knows have no problem being with a taller girl and that girls should get over it, lol. Because of his other qualities, and maybe a bit because of his dimples, I would have married him if he was 5'5". He sings to me in Italian, brings flowers for no special reason, plays a mean blues harmonica, treats everyone around him with kindness and respect, has a great laugh, adores kids, loves God, is incredibly romantic and sexy (ooh, can I say that??), tells me I'm beautiful when I look like hell, and as a bonus: he does the laundry and cooks. OH, and takes me on a date every single week, even if it's just to walk on the beach (lucky us to have a beach, lol, perfect cheap date). No, he's not perfect, there are a few things that drive me absolutely nuts, and not in a good way.
So, my advice is to be proud to be tall, but don't rule out some cool guy based on his height. In the end, it's all the other qualities that will determine how happy you are. I know there has to be physical attraction, but from past relationships I've learned that that doesn't always come first, sometimes it comes later.
Oh Shel, after a description like that I think you may have ruined me for most of the guys I meet, but in the best way possible. MJP unnie's just as bad with descriptions of MJP oppa.
Jomo the Wise, I don't think you've ever described Mr. the Wise to us, have you? Is this my goldfish memory kicking in? I do seem to remember you maybe mentioning that Mr. the Wise is tres hot? Just curious ;)
:D Thanks Jomo tW! The video is quite lovely, and makes me like the song so much better. How do you convince your family members to be part of your videos?
Jomo! Sweet video - I know that I've seen whatever drama that song was from but I can't place it. I enjoyed the disconnect of seeing little blonde American kids with a korean song playing!
Jomo...what a lovely video. I LOVE that song (it's from BOF, btw). I live near a Defense Language Institute and have friends from all branches of the military. I have SO much respect for the families of the soldiers, who live moving from place to place, staying behind when they are deployed.
Your hubby is a cutie and your children are beautiful!
Wow, tall girl! My daughter is tall too, at least to me. She's just about 5'9'' but I think she's done now, she's 18. I always told her she was exactly what I wished I was, tall with auburn hair. I am short with brown hair!
My daughter (14 yrs) looks really tall cuz she's so stinkin' skinny. She's 5'7", at her age I was already 6'. But she's a size 0. Not sure where she got that, because I'm pretty sure my BONES are a size 10. :0)
But, finding pants skinny enough and long enough for her long legs without paying a fortune is tough.
She eats, just never stops moving. She ran everywhere as a little kid, and still enjoys chasing around her friends' little sibs (who love it) and she's on a swim team.
Wow! Congratulations and any, many years ahead ;). I think that getting together with "the one" is better to happened at a more grown up stage, teenage years and early twenties are always a mess. you're so lucky! ;)
Happy Anniversary to you and Mr. Shel -- maybe I'll run into him someday at Caffe Macs (yup, I'm another Apple Worker Bee). He's a keeper if he puts up with you and your KDrama drooling... Here's to 16+16+16+16 more happy years!! :)
I sorta remember one of the first times you mentioned being married to Mr. Shel for many years. :D Oooooh, Shel and Mr. shel! I'm so happy for you guys! Congratulations, and many more.
Thanks for the lovely wishes, everybody. We had a nice day together, even though I was still working this week at the music institute. But, he came with me this morning, we had lunch at our favorite Indian buffet, hung out at the beach for a bit, then he went with me to the concert. Now I'm done with that gig and can maybe get some sleep, I've been running on about 4-5 hours a night all week. THEN I'm gonna do some serious catching up on my dramas.
One of them was playing at Club Passim in Boston, and the other was playing nearby and the guy, Steve, came to see the girl, Deb, play, after hearing how great she was supposed to be. They hit it off, decided to do a collaboration...work turned to friendship, friendship turned to love, love turned to marriage. It could be a KDrama!
Last week, some of you recommended "Hong Gil Dong" to me as an entry-level sageuk. I started watching it and am enjoying it a lot! I'm at ep 6 right now...
Unfortunately, I really want the heroine to end up with the prince rather than Hong Gil Dong. Secons lead syndrome. :-/
It's also funny to read the dramabeans reviews years after the fact, because in the first eps, Jang Geun Seok really isn't acting much at all, and the review worries about his skills. *g*
I'm still wondering whether he's conceived the character like that (basically emotionally frozen / locked down completely), and will slowly unthaw him... or whether he's actually made such huge strides in acting in the intervening years...
I had second lead syndrome for that one too. I loved JGS as a cold-coup-attempting-royal. There are a few scenes where he does a very good job and there are some that I think were too complex for him at that time.
It was the first time I saw a cold-assassin type character in a kdrama and I thought he was pretty good. Then I happened to watch Strongest Chil Woo with Yoo Ah In and I realized that Yoo Ah In was much better at playing repressed unemotional characters. With JGS I always knew he was acting, while with YAI, he really seemed to be the character.
And JGS does get better towards the end, and he does thaw out he character a bit.
I am a bit predisposed to like JGS, I admit it. :-) But it's definitely true that in the first eps of HGD, he isn't going to win any acting prizes...
Although I really like Hong Gil Dong's actor too, in this role he doesn't grab me as much. I like the character, and Kang Ji Hwan plays him very well, but somehow there's nothing that really grabs me so far and says "this is the character you want to a series about". Right now it's more the entire set-up that has me interested, not the main character.
It is more like a fusion saguek but it is so absurd that it is funny. You should watch it as it is hilarious with its fake horses, rock music (under pressure?) and hilarious costumes.
Hong Gil Dong was my entry level saeguk too! :) I kinda wish Sungkyunkwan Scandal was it, though, I think I might've live saeguks more, but now I'll never know.
Hmmm, good question about Jang Geun Seok. Well, I met him in You're Beautiful, and thought he was hilarious there, so when I went back to HGD, I thought, "Well, this guy can do serious too!" I don't think it's huge acting strides so much as he got more into his element with comedy. Just my two cents. Happy watching!
He's definitely good with comedy, but I thought he was also very very great in Beethoven Virus (where I actually didn't realize for 3/4th of the drama that the annoying maestro wasn't gpoing to just go away already but was actually meant to be the first lead!!).
And he was AWESOMNE in the movie where he played one of two teenagers who might have committred a senseless murder... can't recall the name right now, but it was a very repressed character, and there were still *worlds* of emotion and character coming through in JGS's acting.
That's why I was so surprised, because I got to know him as one of the best (and most versatile) kdrama actors I've seen.
I tried watching Sungkyunkwan Scandal, but to be honest, I got bored... am still stuck at ep 5 or something like that. Keep meaning to pick it back up, but really, none of the characters interested me much...
Yes! That's the one - Itaweon Murder. So damn brilliant. He was so INTENSE. And it's also a very good movie in general imo, in a disturbing way...
Is Guloh the unkempt one? No, definitely not in love with him so far. :-) I am vaguely interested by the pretty-boy manipulator who seems to be amusing himself by watching all the hijinks, and I like the heroine on principle and think her goals are very good ones, but other than that...
I have nothing at all against the actor! I just didn't like the maestro as a character, wasn't interested in him and honestly thought he was going to go away at some point and leave the struggling orchestra to pull together without him, with JGS's character as the conductor.
I was really startled when he turned out to be the lead, let me tell you. :-) (Also less than enthused, but... not just because of him, more because the entire drama soured on me at that point for a variety of connected reasons.)
You have to give SKKS a second chance it is so worth it. I was stuck on ep 1 for a long time unable to watch it. But once I started I couldn't stop watching, I was so addicted.
Goo Yong Ha was my favorite character as well. But eventually I loved them all.
About Itaweon murder, what a waste that Song Joong Ki had to play the dead boy. Other than that I like the movie.
I fully intend to pick it up again one of these days! I even started watching the ep I got stuck on several times, but - yaaaawn. (It's ep4, I checked.)
If only dramabeans had recapped this I could read the recap for that ep instead, and hope the next one works better for me!
I've done that several times when I threatened to get stuck in a series, and in many cases I quite enjoyed what came after those (to me) boring eps.
Huih, just started ep4 and remember being stuck on a different scene. Maybe I got stuck on ep3 and then decided to just move on to ep4 and got stuck again...
I think drama beans did recap SKKS. It was fun those days. You can try skipping ep 4 then. Just jump right into ep 7. You can't miss the beginning of ep 8. It is hilarious. It's the best K drama scene that I have ever seen.
Oh, right - now I remember I watched the recap for 3 and wanted to go on with 4, but got stuck on that one too! Yeah, maybe I should just skip several to get ahead to the good stuff.
I LOVE Song Joong Ki's character (pretty boy manipulator) in Sungkyunkwan Scandal. As the show goes on he fleshes out more and I love him even more, I think he might by my favorite fictional character ever. Song Joong Ki really nailed it, I think. Also did you know he was in Itaweon Murder Case? He was the boy that was killed.
HGD kind of sticks with you, doesn't it, for good and bad reasons?
I'm still traumatized, but I don't regret watching it.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
JGS, on reflection, seemed to struggle a bit finding his character, Chang's, inner motivations on a deeper level. Since I don't want this to be too spoilerly, I'll only say that he either came to grips with the deeper elements of birthright and heritage later in HGD's episodes, or he upped his acting game, or both.
I cried, stayed in a state of shock, cried some more ... had to go re-watch a few minutes again to make sure what I thought I had seen I had actually seen.
Um, yeah, me too! I was going to add this to my list and kinda bump it up since I could've sworn someone said HGD was Robin Hood-esque, and I've got a thing for Robin Hood stories. But now I'm not sure I should.
You know I was never able to finish the drama because I was scare. Be brave, and I will follow your steps soon. This is one of those dramas I regret not finishing
I'm thinking of going to look for spoilers before watching the end, though. This really sounds as though someone dies, and depending on who it is I don't want to watch!!
Sylvia, so sorry, didn't mean to scare you ... the drama is so worth finishing, like a lot of dramas are, but they take you on a journey that touches your heart.
All the best dramas do - touch your heart, I mean! :-)
Please don't worry! I'm actually glad of the heads-up, because then I won't be taken so unawares. :-) I remember that it was one of the most crushing things about 49 Days for me... (though really, even a warning wouldn't have helped there; I still ache over that ending, because it really ruined the entire series for me. :-((()
Actually, after I watched the end, I read something that someone else had written about it (won't say 'cuz of spoilers) but I went back and watched the beginning of the very first episode again. There's a scene at the very beginning, then they flash back to the HGD's beginnings.
I think the ending isn't as cut and dry and you would suppose. I think they left it hanging and the outcome could be either way...I choose to believe the happier option.
I thought the ending of HGD was EXACTLY as it should've been, and the only possible finish that was narratively consistent.
I'm not the crying type, but yeah, it made me sad, but I couldn't be outraged, cause one was left with the feeling that the appropriate changes had a better chance of happening than they did earlier, right?
Ummm... sorry... what I said there was a little unclear, I think.
What I mean is that the whole story of HGD was a fight between the rich and the have-nots, and that the death of one of their iconic figures might give some of the people the inspiration to fight on...
I loved HGD, but I it definitely gave me a traumatizing shock! It was one of the few dramas that I was aching for news/videos/spoilers within an hour of airing.
For me, it looked brilliant. And I loved the soundtrack.
I started watching it with little expectations and the story did keep me hooked. Definitely worth the watch!
I love DH! Even the teachers' relationships are still wonderful to me. And yes, the OSTs are brilliant.
Yep, I was absent last week, Shiku. I think what makes DH so special to me is the story itself. You have the major 'who is Superstar K?' planted in the first episode itself, so that made me constantly wonder. Then you have the love stories between the students and also among teachers, plus the usual youthful angst. Did I mention the writers were genius? I was constantly on my toes because of the plot. The way they introduced new elements effortlessly within the drama and how the K pendant traveled from one owner to the next, signifying a different 'arc' to the plot. Awesome!
I thought it started off really strong, but some of the later episodes weren't that interesting. But still worth finishing.
Kim Soo Hyun was fab I think. Loved his character in general. In the final episode, when he tears up, it's so real. He's one to watch I think.
Didn't quite like the ending (the 'let's separate for years and years' bit which just seemed dumb).
Much of the OST was great though, certainly the "Dream High" theme song. Many dramas seem to have rather forgettable soundtracks, but I thought this one was well made (City Hunter being another one where I thought that the soundtrack really worked).
Dream High is amazing! The pace and plot of the story is really well executed and the drama is very good for most of the cast being new actors. Plus Kim Soo Hyun is wonderful in this, I would watch it just for him, Taecyeon is not bad to look at either, haha. Plus who doesn't love singing and dancing?
Hi everyone.. help me out here. I feel like I've seen all the kdramas (well..not all of them, but most of them.. :) ). Anyway, got to the point where I don't know what to watch anymore. Anyone can recommend taiwanese dramas? I'm willing to try, the age range is 18 and up, in other words no teenage drama and NO Rainie Yang. Thank you and have a fabulous weekend..
- Mars is good. (The manga that it is based on is good too. Follows it very closely actually.) I think what's interesting about it is that it deals with a lot issues that are normally not dealt with in dramas. Suicide. Sexual harassment. Sexual abuse. But at the core there is still a wonderful love story.
- Down with Love I thought was rather enjoyable - the kids were great in it.
- Autumn's Concerto is alright as well.
I'm currently watching "Sunshine Angel", which I like so far (but that has Rainie in it).
None of them are in my top favourites because somehow I can't fully warm up to the Taiwanese drama style (although I can't pinpoint what's so different about it), but Mars and Down with Love are worth watching.
Watched only one episode of "Material Queen" cause I couldn't stand it. Didn't get through all of "Smiling Pasta" either, it just seemed like the same old. Same with "Devil beside You" (plus that's another Rainie one if I remember correctly).
I second Fated to Love You (is that taiwan's highest rated drama?) but am on the fence with recommending Down With Love. It's seems like Ella's acting is a hit or miss with a lot of people. I personally think she's capable of really good acting, but reeeeaally overdoes it on the comedy.
I know I already gushed over it last week but you have to check out In Time with You. No Rainie Yang, and both members of the OTP are 30ish. Beautifully shot and scored, it is just pleasing to watch. The first 3 episodes are fully subbed on Viki.
Sunny Happiness was good. I really don't like TWDramas (mostly because of the actresses: Barbie, Ella, Rainie, Ariel) so I was pleasantly surprised when I watched this.
I second Office Girls. I'm watching it now and it's so much fun. The best thing is the female lead doesn't try to act cutesy or be OTT annoying, she's simply refreshing. :)
Hey not a big fan of Tdrama's don't like the voices of the girls...But Fated to love you was great...Also try...Autum's Concerto, Smiling Pasta..I was trying to find Pasta when I found that on youtube...and Sunny Happiness... there's some I've started to watch but cant finish...enjoy your weekend..
Here are some suggestions. I don't know your taste and I haven't watched all of those listed below. I have also included a couple of websites that you can watch various Tdramas streaming.
Autumn's Concerto
Black and White
Channel X
Easy Fortune Happy Life
Hayate the Combat Butler
Love Keeps Going
Love Recipe
Material Queen
My Queen
Office Girls
P S Man
Ring Ring Bell
Sunny Happiness
Summer's Desire
The Prince Who Turned into a Frog
black and white is one rare taiwanese drama. i'm praying that someone in taiwan will write as awesome a thriller as black and white. It's not just a thriller, there is some comedy and romance thrown into it too.
(also recommend Office Girls- like someone else said, the heroine is refreshing for not having that cutesy personality. )
thank you all for the replies.. one more question (i cross my fingers hopefully someone still check this thread). Where can I download taiwanese dramas with english subs? I prefer download than watching online.
sugoideas(sp?) am-addiction, my Asian cinema (used to be yellow cinema).
I don't watch a ton of TW dramas. More of a K&J girl. But I am with you on the whole download vs streaming. I watch streaming only as a last resort. :)
My new project for the week is trying to get my mother into kdramas ('cuz I need to spread the addiction *cough* excuse me, wealth). I'm thinking MNIKSS is the best for a first timer who loved Bridget Jones's Diary, but does anyone have any better suggestions? I KNOW that she would not watch makjang melodramas or any youthful dramas like Heartstrings, so I'm also thinking The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry would be good. Thoughts?
Those are both great dramas to start with and they kind of lull her into a sense of security about kdramas ( unconvincing or absent charming second leads). My starter list would have
Soulmate
Samsoon
City Hall
Bad Couple
The woman Who still wants to marry
I think after city hall she'll want to see other cha seung won dramas and you can take it from there. Good Luck
Any Hong Sisters' drama: Delightful Girl Chun-hyang, My Girl, My Girlfriend is a Guniho, Best Love, You're Beautiful, Fantasy Couple, & Hong Gil Dong. So fun and touching.
I think this year's batch of romantic comedies are good to start. You know, Best Love, Secret Garden, Protect the Boss, I Need Romance.
The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry is a good choice too. Also What's Up Fox, Parsonal Taste and City Hunter (Lee Minho overdose),
I hated the last episode of I Need Romance so much, I couldn't delete the whole drama fast enough. :)
Up until the end I had really enjoyed it. It could have ended 3 ways. 2 of which I would have been fine with. But really Show? You had to go THERE? :) Not that I'm bitter or anything.
Haha! I love your tactics! I did the same thing with my mom and eased her into kdramas before I started dropping sageuks and heavier material on her. She *loved* Chuno (go figure), and when City Hunter was airing both of us were glued to the computer every Wednesday-Thursday to wait for Viki subs...
I think you should try any Hong Sisters for your mom. Best Love, Fantasy Couple... Otherwise my mom even liked YB, SKKS, and BoF. Maybe she's young at heart (or just can't resist crack dramas!)
Oh TiaC, I know the feeling! I've been trying to get my mom to join the dark side fandom for months now, and she just shakes her head or chuckles at me. Most shakes her head. Anywho, if it works for you let us know! I must follow in your example.
I finished watching Down with Love last weekend. Yep, it took three sleepless nights and a great deal of patience! I have to say that it's one of the best T-dramas that I've seen. Ella is adorable but I didn't feel like puking whenever she acts all cutesy. And Jerry Yan is not bad. Good show, this one!
In any case, I am going back to school!
Since I'll be channeling all my energy into school-related matters, K-dramas will only be a luxury I get to enjoy on odd weekends. I doubt that I'll be able to play in the OT on a regular basis, however I'll be sure to pop in once in a while.
I'd like to be sentimental and say thanks for being nice to me! I apologize if I have ever offended anyone while being in my ridiculous immature state of mind.
The owner of the vibrating buttocks will surely miss all of you!
This declaration has opened a can of worms. Like:
What happened to your teaching job?
Why the sudden change of heart from teaching to biology? Will you go back to teaching after you get additional education or do you plan on entering a different field, such as medical or scientific research?
Where will you be studying?
Will you come to the U.S.? If not, what country?
Are you certain you want to enter this field?
What if you become like Bruce Banner or Spiderman or the Green Goblin and have a biology experiment go awry?
As always, you don't have to answer the questions, just know that I am thinking about you and want the best for you. I will miss you while you are gone. You have such a beautiful spirit. You definitely add a lot to our Friday OT's.
I don't know about my spirit, but yours is definitely glowing! Thank you for your well wishes.
It's not exactly a change of heart; Biology has always been my favorite subject. I even taught Biology to high school kids!
In my country lots of teachers took a 'break' from teaching to go back to school. My decision is not impulsive since I planned this earlier this year. I'll be enrolling in a local university, which is two flights away from my hometown.
Speaking of which, I have a flight to catch in six hours (ugh, 2.5 hours of intense boredom!). Oh, and by this time next week, the orientation would have ended.
YRH! Say it ain't so! You can't leave us, your loyal subjects. *sniffle* What'll we do without your vibrating buttocks? Or the eye-luggage? Or you?! Don't you make me into an ankle grabber!
Pfft, me awesome. You've seen my posts full of cowardice and unrequited eye-lust right? Clearly you are meaning to respond to someone else, YRH-ssi. ;)
Good Friday morning before a long weekend - at least for US and Canada!
Weather has been coooooold - (28F one night) so the heat has gone on in my house. I feel like I wimped out, but when it is 50F in the house in the am, we need heat!
I watched Hello My Teacher/Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy (SBS, 2005) last weekend. Totally recommend for a nice funny light romance.
Gong Yoo is, of course, irresistable as a (very mature looking) high school student playing opposite the cute and amazing Gong Hyo Jin.
It was fun playing "spot the 2011 Drama star" in the cast. Just about every trendie was represented. Interesting to see who could hold thier own with GHJ.
Choi Yeo Jin (I Need Romance - 2011) was great, but sometimes the plot didn't give her enough to do.
Jang Hee Jin (Spy Myong Wol - 2011) showed us her early promise of "brat." I actually thought she was a highlight of SMW - pretty much carrying on conversations with herself as the plot fell apart around her.
Go Joon Hee (CYHMH - 2011, WUF, too) who cries so prettily, did well. She had a beautiful scene with GHJ that made me cry.
Kim Da Hyun (WBDS - 2011) played the most passive male second lead ever. He plays an artist in WBDS.
There were lots of others, too!
Did anyone see this and like it?
Now I am watching Air City for Lee Jung Jae because my expectations are extremely low (Hot guys. Cold plot) I am actually enjoying it with my brain off.
I watched it recently and played the same game you played.
It has its moments, but I have some issues with high school teacher student relationships. I know they are common in manga and dramas, but even if the student is over 18. I have
some problems with it, called it a cultural shock, if you want.
You missed Ham Eun Jung (Dream High 2011) she is in the last couple of episodes of Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy (prior to her singer days)
I just watched it recently too, but I found it to be just okay. I thought Gong Yoo and Gong Hyo Jin were fantastic as the OTP and wish I could just watch them teasing each other for 16 episodes. But I found the plot and the supporting characters to be kind of lame. The conflict was so manufactured by the last few episodes that I was thisclose to not watching the last episode and had to practically force myself to finish. You are totally right about the second lead-probably one of the most ineffectual in a drama. And I too love Choi Yeo Jin, but she really isn't well utilized here.
I watched it and liked it. I just found a great copy of it last night on hanju1.com to watch streaming, but alas it only has Chinese subtitles. But on all the streaming copies I watched with English subtitles, the picture is horrible and fuzzy. I am assuming that you downloaded your copy, is that correct?
Where did you find Biscuit Teacher? I haven't been able to find it online (I need subtitles, too...I only know about a dozen words in Korean). Granted, I haven't looked super hard....got a long list of dramas already. But, I haven't seen it in my usual places...
I've seen Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy recommended, but neither pinged with my mood at the time. It sounds like it may be worth putting on standby for when I just can't take it anymore, whatever "it" happens to be at the time.
So, do Canadians eat Turkey for their Thanksgiving, too? Just curious. If my mom had her way, we'd have Mexican food, but my Dad won't go for it. I'm with her, I'm only marginally fond of turkey, but give me a good tamale and I'm a happy camper.
I started to count mine. I've completed 64, seen at least 70% of 30, seen at least 1 complete episode of 17 in what will be two years this month. I didn't count those I'm currently watching.
I wonder how many I've watched... I once kept a list of J-dramas I watched and then I stopped writing them down, and then I did that with K-dramas and stopped doing that too... I guess I'm not made out to make lists ^^
You'll catch up, I'm sure, cmrprindle! If I could go back, I think I'd go slower and try to savor more, but I did do plenty of that, anyway, and no real regrets except watching
EAST OF EDEN. Yeah, I'm still pi**es about that one.
So, I started watching Princess' Man this morning (I've been so busy that this would be my first kdrama episode in a little over a month, isn't that CRAZY?)
I'm only like half way through the 1st episode but I'm already loving it. Then again, I could watch Park Shi-hoo read a newspaper for an hour (or 24) as well. He really is one of the most handsome kdrama leads around. Not only is he beautiful but every time I watch him in something, I get blown away by his acting.
My Korean class is going so well! I'm so excited because it's not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. I'm understanding all the grammar rules rather fast as well. I think I'm having trouble with pronunciation but it's nothing a little kdrama watching couldn't fix (well, that's what I tell myself, haha).
HA HA My kiddos had the same reaction to Korean language class ... although, now they speak so well, I can't always follow them!
It's going to be a beautiful weekend in Texas: great for a Fall Festival and trip to the Rose Gardens. Hope everyone has something wonderful to do this weekend to re-charge their batteries for the week ahead!
p.s. I've decided that I want to get into J-doramas. The only one I've watched is the drama Hana Yori Dango and I watched this movie called Kimi ni Todoke. Kimi ni Todoke had the cutest Japanese boy I've ever seen and his smile was SIGH. :') Any recommendations? I like romcoms.
I highly recommend Nodame Cantabile, Nobuta wo Produce, and Kimi wa Petto. Nodame is a favorite of mine. The music is glorious! Be warned, though, that they have incuded some anime/manga features that may appear quite over the top in a live action drama.
LONG VACATION. First dorama and I loved it. Genuinely touching while being all kinds of hilarous and fluffy. Plus the fact that it was made in like 1997 makes it even more amazing. The fashion alone is worth watching.......
Yamato Nadeshiki Shichi Henge - group of boys living in a beautiful house have to turn goth girl into a real lady in order to keep living in the house. Very sweet. And important: Kame.
Nobuta wo Produce: Popular boy and dork boy team up behind the scenes to turn a girl who's being bullied into a popular girl. In the process they all become best friends. Awesomely good. And important: Kame. Also Yamapi.
Ashita no Joe: an actual movie, not a J-dorama, about a boxer from the wrong side of the tracks. Very much worth watching. Also important: Yamapi.
Currently have queued up Tattsu...something or other. Poor boy, rich girl. Also important: Kame.
Code Blue - Japanese TV series (medical) - interns trying to get on a LifeStar-like team. Also important: Yamapi
Hmmm..
I just watched a J-drama this past week and I thought it was cute and it's also quite short - 6 episodes. It's about a time-traveling man who tries to stop his wife from meeting him and thereby falling in love and marrying him. It's called Juunen Saki mo Kimi ni Koishite
I have a query since I only just started TW last month. It's the food thing.
In KD-they are out at night eating ddukbukki and soju.Breakfast is rice, stew and banchan.I see roasted sweet potatoes in winter.
How come in the TW-pizza is the food of choice?I mean just 5 dramas and I keep seeing them eat pizza, sandwiches, fast food, soft drinks.Breakfast is OJ,toast etc.
KD is all about family and meals and bonding over food and alcohol.TW is like...actually don't even know why I am asking this question.
It just bugged me that's all.It just doesn't look healthy- although all that soju can't be good for your liver.
It's probably because TW has been majorly influenced by Western standards for a number of years and the TW culture assimilated many of our bad habits in food preferences.
Am still in the USA (Cumberland/Frostburg, MD to be exact) and will be here for three more weeks. The forests around are now more fully wearing autumn colors though not yet as vibrant as the ones in northern Pennsylvania which I enjoyed when we went to Niagara last weekend. It was kind of sad, though, that the woods around Buffalo, NY and Niagara, and even Ontario, Canada were not as colorful.
Niagara Falls was awesome though it rained some when we were there. It was a wet Sunday and rained all the way through our 7-hour drive from Canada to Maryland.
This weekend we go to Richmond VA to watch Wicked.
I finished a fanfic project, a 15-minute iMovie titled "Dancing Happily Ever After in KDramaland'' which features dance sequences from Secret Garden, Boys Over Flowers, Save the Last Dance for Me, Summer Scent, Lovers in Paris, Scent of a Woman, and City Hall.
But I am so disappointed I could not share it with you in YouTube because of copyright constraints. It is in my YT account but can only be accessed through an email invitation from me.
Many here have done similar projects. Do you have any suggestions on how to go about sharing files that contain some scenes from dramas?
Those who have websites on dramas: Did you get permission to upload some of the photos/video clips that you used?
And BTW, there's a tune stuck in my head. It's quite annoying that it sounds familiar but I cannot identify its title nor its composer.
This is the tune in BOF to which Jan Di danced with the F3 at the Shinwah graduation party and with Jun Pyo when they got away after his aborted wedding.
I've downloaded the BOF OSTs and that tune is not in any of those.
I need to unstuck that tune in my head. H-E-E-L-L-L-P-P-P!!!
I was going to start watching TPM this week, and some how I felt a desire to see Jung Il-woo's pretty face and ended up watching The Return of Iljimae instead. Well, it was the my first time watching and had been in my list for a long time, but never seem to have time for it.
Maybe I've hear so much about it that I expected more. It took me a while to get int to it, in part do to the annoying narration in the first episodes, but eventually I ended up falling in love with it.
I need the 31 of October to come, because I'm feeling an Jung Il'woo withdrawl syndrome and I'm tempted to watch Take Care of the Young Lady.
Someone stop me please, before I find my self watching that drama!!!!
Now I have to make time for TPM
Bye bye social life :(
Happy Friday, friends and family! I am so looking forward to the holiday weekend here in the US. Maybe Canada too? I have no idea.
Anyway, I'm here because I wanted to share some epic funnies with you all. Jimmy Kimmel, whom I adore, did the funniest thing he's ever done. It's not all at K-drama related, but it was too good NOT to share, y'know?
[Background: Here in the US, we're totally fat and hate exercising. We're looking for quick fixes, people will do anything and BUY anything in order to try to get slim without working at it. Some of these products have unfortunate sexual implications. So now the industry is getting mocked. And deservedly so.]
Hmm... speaking of fat, who thinks it's appropriate to consider (NJ Governor) Chris Christie's weight when evaluating him as a candidate for the presidency?
Okay, I'm glad you said that. Some commentators have been suggesting/pointing out that a woman with a comparable physique would never have gotten anywhere near the political place Mr. Christie has reached. And I think that that's true. What do we make of that, and what do we do about it (if anything)?
Christie is a state or city politician right? I think it's possible for anyone to get any place in state or city politics. These kinds of politicians are actively involved in the administration and policies for everyday life for the individual or local business and can be successful on those merits alone.
umm it has been a while since i've watched k-dramas because i was so in to k-variety shows nowadays...any recommendations? the ones that are recent? or just recently ended? i don't mind what genre though :) thank you!
Found this the other day on YT when I was looking for the Buffy vs. Edward video. Alex is this young-ish English guy who posts vids of himself reading each chapter of Twilight. Hilarious side comments on the story, characters, and the author's writing talent (or lack thereof). Here's the first chapter:
Does anyone know where I can watch good (meaning the videos are good and not broken) English translated versions of the reality show "We Got Married?" Please let me know if you do (all 3 seasons).
Also let me know if it is possible to buy the series online (with English subs).
Thanks, Claire - I must have been totally distracted by just finding out that Lee Teuk is the newest "couple" on WGM.
Really, does he need any MORE exposure on Korean TV?!
And now that I just reread my comment, I'm wondering why I care......
**sigh**
:)
I’m looking for the actual COMPOSER/SONG WRITER/ARRANGER for “Hello, Hello” on the “Mary Stayed Out All Night” OST. All I keep finding is that its by Jang Geun-seok but I seriously doubt he composed it. Not that he didn’t rock the vocals.
Thanks!
2) The Weepies "All Good Things"
I like this song soooo much better than last week's song (whiny British punk rock) ! I played it several times and downloaded it. I'm actually NOT going to say she has a Norah Jones-like quality. She sounds like this little known British Indie artist Sheila Nicholls and the verse melody sounds like a Brazillian Bossa Nova, no? Then when she gets rid of the syncopation she brings the 90s Shania Twain a little.
She does have a very modern production but no autotune (HOORAY!) It's sort of a 90s singer/songwriter throwback and the use of back up vocals was a little intense. But as soon as the keys and the really laid back drum groove with the kick and the cymbol started I was won over and the back up vocals couldn't detract from it.
I feel like the vocal/instrumental mix could've been balanced a bit better. But I really like the song over all!
PS I'M NOT READING ANY OF THESE UNTIL I FINISH TPM!!!!! DON'T TELL ME HOW IT ENDS!!!!!
I was just thinking about the 2011 drama rankings. This is the first year I'm qualified to rank dramas because I only watched dramas. In no particular order
Royal Family
49 Days
Best Love
Protect the Boss
I expect to add thousand days promise and man of honor/ jane's glory to this list.
I'm watching Royal Family now, and really liking it. I only have four eps left, and it's killing me cuz I haven't had time to watch. BUT, tomorrow morning, whilst my morning-hater family is slumbering, I hope to catch at least one or two more.
I thought the ending was fitting for City Hunter. Hong Gil Dong was a super heavy ending, but it, too, was fitting!
I think in the tops are:
TPM (of what I've seen of it so far! Still in the middle!)
City Hunter
Best Love
Scent of a Woman (Kim Sun-ah, let me list the ways I love thee...and of course Lee Dong-wook)
49 days. First episode was a waste, but the rest was gold for me. This was the only drama all year that I rush to get news about and see, even when I was neck deep in final papers. The same sort of happened with Secret Garden (half of it was in 2011), but things went down by the last 5 or 6 episodes.
Then Protect the Boss, Best Love, and City Hunter.
-Scent of a Woman (on top of my list)
-49 days (though I hated the ending-geh)
- Secret Garden( half of it was 2011, right? I also loved the parody by Kim Gabsoo ahjusshi)
-Protect the Boss (Jisung, baby your image is changed forever)
-Best love (Piljoo lover till the end)
Oh scent of a woman...so good.
I like Piljoo. He is epically adorable. But Cha Seung-won...why are you married?
I haven't seen 49 days or Protect the boss...yet.
But Secret Garden? Explain that one to me. I SERIOUSLY don't get the hype about that drama. I watched it twice to see if the first time I was delusional. I like the soundtrack. I love Oska. Yu In na was adorable. But dang, I can't understand the main couple at ALL.
I thought I was the only one who think like this. I try to watch "SECRET GARDEN" twice and not feel anything. After watched episode 5, i jumped to 9.It was too bored ...
For me, a good drama is the drama that can not ever make me skip from start to finish. It just happens to "Best Love". Never been like this before. This drama made me cry and laugh from beginning to end. I do not want to lose all dialog. This is not my first drama but "Best Love" made me "REWATCH and REWATCH" it again.
I hope "Protect The Boss", "Scent of A Woman", "The Princess Man" and "City Hunter" can cure it. The laugh, joy and tears that presented by "Best Love" always reminds me. I already watched those dramas and those didn't work. I have to find some helps here. SERIOUSLY....
Did you try My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, My Name is Kim Sam-soon, City Hall, Coffee Prince, Bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, Hong Gil Dong (many people are super split about it, but I really liked it), Personal Taste (I KNOW I KNOW. But I enjoyed i all the same!), Prosecuter Princess (I'm on the super fan boat here, and Park Shi Hoo...yummmmmm), You're beautiful.
These are ones I've really enjoyed despite some lack of content/acting/directing etc.
wow its been a while bt ovee the past 2-3 weeks there have been major changes in my life. i‘m now in Russia and i miss the good crispy beautiful african sun. Ther‘s also the language barrier. And at times u gt confused with thoer letters. I was watching Surgeon Bong Dal Hee the past two weeks and i found it different, it cud hv been the fact that it was medical drama and it felt like a bit grey‘s anatomy was used in respect to its structure. about to watch Beethoven‘s virus. all this time i thought JGS was the lead!?!!! but because of school i‘ll probably be busy but i will definetly keep up to date with my dramas here..
*hugs* @Jomo and @shel
congratulations unnis on your respective annervesaries. May God bless you with many more years. Всего доброго (hope i got that right-all the best)
There are many similarities. In my former life I had to take a test each year to demonstrate certain proficiencies. One of them was to correctly differentiate between East and West German speakers. Another was to identify Polish and Czech, as opposed to Russian. They would always have someone say something with words very similar to Russian, of course. Over the years I decided that Polish sounds like Russian with a bunch of marbles in your mouth. And if it sounds just like Russian but I can't understand a word of it? It's Czech. I couldn't do any of it anymore, of course.
Thanks for the wishes! Good luck there in Russia. I have a Russian sister in law, and we joke all the time about teaching me Russian, but it's been 10 years and I still can't even count to ten, lol.
I have to admit I must be one of the few people who does not get the "City Hall" or Cha Seung Won. I am finding the drama, plot and characters really boring and I have no desire to see the rest.
As for "The Princess' Man" - one of the best dramas of 2011. Wonderful story, cast and music and a great ending - made me feel good.
I've seen the first two episode of "Tree with Deep Roots" and I love it. Again, some wonderful music, characters and what looks like a great plot.
Re: City Hall, I felt the same way about Kim Sam Soon. I watched it because everyone said it was so good, and I liked the first few episodes but by the end I disliked pretty much every character and didn't really care about who ended up with whom.
Where did you watch Tree with Deep Roots? I want to watch it really only because Song Joong Ki is in it, but I don't think he's in every episode.
Dramacrazy - I can understand Korean so I don't necessarily have to wait for the subs though they do help with some of the words. I think SJK is in next week then he disappears and we transition off to the adult version. He plays the struggling, scholar king with a controlling power-crazy father really well.
Oh, I really need the subs since I know absolutely no Korean. I'll just be patient, I guess.
What's with SJK only appearing in a few episodes of practically every drama (except skks) he's in? I basically stopped watching Will it Snow for Christmas after his character died as melodramas aren't really my thing.
Okay as a person who attempted to watch city hall 2 times before completing it ( it literally put me to sleep) I have to tell you it gets better. I just watched it for a third time and I noticed the subs are really obtuse and samsooki's recaps really helped keep the city hall blaze going.
It's kind of a relief to see your comments about City Hall and not being able to continue to watch/finish the drama.
I thought it was just me - have tried it 2 times now and just can't find the fabulous in it.
Every time I pull up my Queue at DF it's staring at me with puppy eyes, silently begging me to watch....
he he that was me and you're beautiful, personal taste and manny. And one time I was stuck with sweet city too. And the dramafever queue really does make me feel guilty and overwhelmed.
Dramafever's version of City Hall might just be the worst set of official subs ever.
It's kills all the witty dialogue and the double entendres and the random asides that pepper the early episodes with lots of color.
While CH may not be everyone's cup of tea, when it was released on Dramafever everyone I spoke with who loves CH were all dismayed by how bad the subs were. And CH is so talky it needs spot-on subs.
Sadly WithS2 didn't pick up CH as a project, but the only way to watch CH on Dramafever and understand how it's supposed to come across is to cross-reference Samsooki's recaps.
If I watched CH on Dramafever I would have stopped watching in a few episodes. It doesn't make much sense.
Yes, I'm going to have to back OCKOALA up on the subbing nightmare that most City Hall watchers suffer under: the crisp slapping dialogue is mostly LOST in translation on Dramafever ... Samsooki's recaps are the place to pick it up.
It's a shame such a sharp, witty drama has been so badly translated that it is losing fans and discouraging even those of us who are faithful to it from recommending it.
And here I thought I was the only person who found CH utterly boring. One of the few kdramas that I've randomly run across on KBS that didn't suck me in and wasn't also a daily. Heck, I've had better luck with dailies. Anywho...
Celexa, I agree, but I was told about the "off" button that Jomo tW mentions a few weeks ago and it's really better. So you can have your subs and watch them, too. :)
Happy Friday, fellow Dramabeaners!! I haven't contributed to a Friday OT in a lonnng time due to work/time constraints. But here at The Mothership, we're all still reeling from Steve's (sadly anticipated, but still sudden) death by trying to put one foot in front of the other, because that's how SJ would want us to carry on. Still sighing heavily, though...
I'm also starting Early Withdrawal Symptoms over the last episodes of WDBS coming up on Monday and Tuesday. Even though I've basically just thrown my hands up in the air with the writers going all over the map with the plot and everything, I'm sure my fellow Sisters-in-Lust and I will be sobbing uncontrollably after all is said and done. Just make sure the finale turns out to be UBER-MEGA-EPIC, and I won't need to fly over to Seoul to beat some people there to a bloody pulp. :)
And here's hoping my precious Ji Changwook-ssi gets some serious R&R before taking on his next project. He's looking awfully thin and tired in the most recent production shots I've seen online. ::sob::
I have several other dramas banked for viewing in the meantime. Heck, I'm just gonna throw a dart at the board and watch whichever one gets picked...
And Happy Thanksgiving to our north-of-the-border neighbors! Nanaimo Bars for everyone!! :)
I am there with you... When they said they'd cut WBDS from 30 to 29 episodes I cried over the loss of one more hour with our beautiful boys.... Even though you're right about the plot, sadly.
You are a true JCW fan. You're thinking about his R&R. I just want to see him as soon as possible.
His role as BDS was so good that I don't think any other role will come close to it though.
Mr Shel's last day at Apple was a week ago (he was a PCB design contractor there). He misses the Mothership already. Mostly he misses Caffe Macs wood fired pizza. He lived in Italy in the 70's and said that Caffe Mac has come closest to the pizza he ate there.
And I could swear we just saw Steve at Caffe Mac a few weeks ago. Weird and very sad.
Has anyone seen/liked 'Tree With Deep Roots' yet? I've been super excited about it since I've loved Jang Hyuk since Chuno and want him to have another equally good/better project (does Midas even count?). I'm waiting on subs but I'm really nervous because I really, really want it to be good! :(
So I was watching Gye Baek this week and am sad that The King Mu and prince Euija want to set up Gye Baek to fail as they are jealous of his victories. I mean did they expect him to loose when they sent him to guard the fortress?
I wish Euija would stop trying to come between Gye Baek and the Ace Jihyo. He already lost his parents and was sold as a slave because of Euija, so let him love in peace!!!!
It is surprising that am enjoying watching this show even without subs despite not knowing Korean so I have to hand it to the actors.
So far it's fair to middling. I haven't done much (which is bad, bad, bad) but I'm really looking forward to having Monday off. :) I'm hoping to get some writing in this afternoon so that the day isn't a total waste.
Jumma, you don't have off? I'm surprised. Even when I had a job with hardly any days off I... Oh wait...maybe I didn't have Columbus off then. That would fit. Hrm.
I've just started watching The Princess' Man. While the first couple of episodes were almost slow, they were still steady and kept me watching. Now things are starting to pick up. I do have a pet peeve that I need to get off my chest. It seems to take at least 5 minutes at the beginning of each episode to recap the story so far. It makes me want to yell at the screen, "Get on with it! I've been watching the show this far so I know what's already happened." Hopefully as the drama progresses this little annoyance will be phased out or shortened to, like, five seconds.
I don't know why but I can never follow through on a Sageuk...
I've started several and left them after the fourth or fifth episode. And it's not like I feel negatively about them, I love the gorgeousness of the set, and the clothes., I always start with a hopeful spirit that perhaps I've met my Sageuk, the Sageuk that will stay with me forever, but I'm always disappointed. I think I'll have to live without ever finding the one that will stick to my heart.
Of course I watched fusion Sageuks (HGD, both Iljimaes, and legend of hyang dan,) but they're not the real thing. The only one that came close to having my heart and certainly the only one that I mostly finished (I skipped several episodes in the middle) was Chuno, but then the ending totally broke my heart.
maybe me and Sageuks-- we're just not meant to be. ::sobs::
Which sagueks have you started and stopped? Sometimes, it can be a case of getting past a certain episode (like episode 5 in Tamna the Island) before the sageuk locks you in.
Can I go on a mini-rant? Two of the sites I visit spell sageuk "s-a-g-e-u-k" and three spell it "s-a-g-u-e-k". WHICH is it?
Anyway, back to Minnetter, perhaps if you made a more complete list here and what veered you away from the sageuk/saguek, some of the veteran sageuk lovers can give you some tips and guidance.
I started out very hesitantly on sagueks, even stopping most of the first ones I tried to watch, but suddenly, I hit my stride (Jumong).
Javabeans' perspective helped me give sageuks another go, and now I watch most of them with enjoyment. I don't think I got the "genre" at first and had a tough time transitioning.
Regardless of whether you take another historical plunge, HAPPY WATCHING!
Ahh! I'm seriously missing protect the boss a lot! I can't stop listening to the OST and keep going back to the Viki.com page. Anyone else having withdrawals?
YES! I miss my Sungie. :0( I LOVED the whole family so much, even the plotting moms.
I was trying to explain it's appeal to a non-kdrama watcher though and I think you have to have seen a few dramas in order to "get" it. I think it would still be enjoyable to a kdrama newbie, but so much of the humor is about standing the kdrama stereotypes on end.
*hugs* @MJP yesi have been rather quiet, i war trying to get settled in. Yeah i've made some friends. Mostly Malaysians and Africans. Especially the Malaysians that like korean dramas. Its nt bad really because people either keep to themselves or they are curious especially about my skin colour and my hair. Honestly you can never be ready. As for Russian it frustrates me at times bt its coming along although i feel like i'm in first grade all over again.
*hugs* @JoAnne my Russian is still next to nothing so the plan is to get some Russian friends. But that's kind of hard with my skin colour being a barrier and so most shy away save for the few brave souls.
*hugs* @ajhummabunny i found i liked Surgeon Bong Dal Hee because its kinda quirky and the two lead guys as well as certain side characters just made it enjoyable.
As for my princess, its so fluffy and tender. it felt like cotton candy, sweet enough to give you a toothache. i just melts in your mouth and then you want more.
by the way, i really am sad that Dan Carter got injured and of course Jonah Lomu. I relly hope his kidney doesn't shutdown. As for South Africa the end is near! I think Australia will win that match. Talking of Australia i wonder hw the cricket boys are doing?
True true. He tells people now "Just skip the bad 1st marriage altogether and go straight to the good 2nd one!". We sometimes talk about "what if's" if we'd gotten together back then....I was 19, he was 21. But I think he had to live with Crazy Lady to appreciate that I'm not quite THAT crazy.
And, I totally believe God had a hand in it all. Too many weird "coincidences". And he got The Boy out of it, and I adore him, too. He's as awesome as his daddy.
Happy Weekend, OT!!! And to my American OT family, happy three day weekend. Woohoo!
Happy Anniversary again to Shel and Jomo the Wise :D
It has been such a long week. We found out on Monday that we had a major form due later this month that we thought we wasn't due until the end of the year, and takes forever to process, so that became my top priority. I did, however, get a drive-by run in with a cute potential employee and a brief encounter with the smokin' hot Italian guy who now works off-site. I'm pretty sure when he looked me up and down it was a regular guy thing and not actually b/c he's interested, bu I am so deciding to take it as interest :D
Gosh, I love working around cute guys again!
*cough*
Anywho, my drama watching has been sparse this week. I've been uber exhausted. I did post my pictures from the Korean Day Parade to my blog, so if you click the link in my name it'll take you over there. I'm still working on putting up the video. Apparently my laptop doesn't like it when I download and upload simultaneously, even when the uploads are under a minute each. :-/ I plan on putting the video on my blog as well, but if you want to see them now you can go to the youtube channel that I apparently now have :s
Also, I tentatively started back with watching Twinkle Twinkle/All That Glitters/Sparkling. I'd forgotten that this was one of the few, if not the only, shows that could regularly make me scream at the characters o.O
And that's me. I'm off to read the comments.
Anyone seen or heard from Viola darling? Or Izzie? Were either of them on last week? I hardly made it past the teens, comment wise :-/
I am envious. I am a freelance musician so my exposure to guys is dependent upon the whims of the gods, and fickle they are. The last cute guy I saw who was interested in me was when I was on vacation! >:O. I'm also a private teacher so in that aspect of my life, the only men I meet are the 14-year-old boys that I teach, or their parents...Helas, what to do?
Do you recommend Twinkle?
I will watch your video at an hour when I won't wake my housemate up...
Lisa/Raine, I would recommend Twinkle up until about episode 40 or so. Jomo the Wise and some of the other beaners might be better at pinpointing when it all went down into the makjang valley of doom. Le sigh.
As for cute guys...I kinda envy myself right now! lol. I've been working relatively steadily since college, but that was probably the last time I was in the presence of anyone either cute or available. And even when I was working my afterschool jobs, I was so stuck in my role either watching kids or watching merchandise (depending on the job) that I couldn't really enjoy any eye-candy that might be hovering about. After college I worked in a small law office in a small town where everyone was married, then the office moved to an even smaller town so I couldn't even go out to the shopping areas, then I worked in a tiny non-profit with another woman and our married boss. This is probably just make-up drool for all the years I've missed and no one's actually as cute as I'm making them seem :s
But freelance musician! What do you play? Where do you gig? What kind of music? Last night my music mentor became my music teacher when he laid an acoustic guitar on my and started to teach me Livin' On a Prayer! I am so lost.
Ah, yes the makjang valley of doom. I definitely want to steer clear. Even in Shining Inheritance, the makjang element was just a bit too much for me. (I know, Lee Seung-gi makes up for a lot of things...but not even that adorable grin could ameliorate the crazy, maniacal antics of the evil stepmother.)
As for men, hormones do funny things. Its nice when they make men look like yummilicious eye candy, no matter where they be on the spectrum of hotness. But I swear today that the photographer at the wedding I was playing at took one too many photos of me (the hired help) rather than of the bride. Pervy camera men...
As for being a musician...I've evolved so much over the past year even. My profession is that of a freelance classical cellist. I started out as a classical musician (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms.) Then somehow I joined an indie rock band (Al Green, Nirvana.) I can't even tell you how that started. One day I'm all "Rock out with your Bach out" then the next day...
ANYWAY...Then I quit to go get a degree. Graduated. Joined another rock band (where I occasionlly sing. YAY!) Ended up learning how to improv and now I'm a Classical/rock/jazz/blues cellist who takes whatever work I can get (weddings, studio recording, concerts, religious services, substitute in orchestras) I also teach cello to the little childrens (and the occasional adult who wanders my way.)
In an effort to combine my love for my cello (her name is Dotty) and k-dramas, I'm arranging the ballad version of "Hello Hello" from MSOAN. I'll post it once I've practiced it. I think I made it too hard...ha ha.
Keep on rollin' along with the guitar. It's fantabulous. You can make a GREAT night with some beer, a couple of guitars and good friends. I'll pull out my Martin guitar and raise a mug. *raises mug* Konbae! Kampai! Cin Cin! Cheers! Salut!
The Korean Day Parade was lots of fun. I wonder if it was to coincide with Choseuk? Apparently the free concert/festival happening this weekend in NYC messed with a Choseuk thing that happens in Jersey when it, the concert, moved to Jersey as well.
Omigosh, if I'd been in Korea I'd probably be in total freak-out uber giddy mode. Especially if I were alone. I am horrible with compass directions. Thank God Manhattan is mostly laid out on a grid, and I still get lost regularly. I'd also have had a lot more pictures. lol.
Speaking of working around cute guys, the Cute Spanish Guy and I are becoming more friendly. It's probably in a dongsaeng kinda way (he's older than me by months, the poop) considering all the teasing he does. And yesterday, he fake-thwacked me with legal paper in the way that only friendly people will do :D Mostly I'm digging having friends at work. All the guys in my area are great and have really adopted me as part of their department even though I'm technically not.
Oh, so things are getting better with Cute Spanish Guy? :) That's exciting news! Well, you probably see it as a dongsaeng kind of way, but I sense different. ;) (Hopeful here. Haha!)
LOL! Not hardly! There's the Cute Spanish Guy who's inches older than me, um...the Indian guy right across the way is handsome but not exactly eye-candy. Um...technically the smokin' hot Italian guy works for an entirely different group, tho he does the same work my cube-mates do, so even when he was in the office he was in an entirely different building. Um.................................Hot Asian Guy was downstairs in a different department (no one cute has replaced him :p), and our IT guys is kinda cute.
But even though I've listed like 5 guys, on a floor of almost 20 ppl there are only 6 women, including me. All the rest are men. It's only a little better downstairs. And the company as a whole is very male-centered, so the ratio of cute-to-regular is fairly low :) But still so much better than what I've been used to! They're all really nice guys, though, so eye-candy or not it's great being with them.
It really sucks how "The Musical" releases one episode each week. Can't wait until next week Tuesday! Yeah, it comes out Friday but English subtitles finish by Tuesday. T_T
Happy weekend y'all and a special shout out to all the people celebrating the Canadian Thanksgiving.
Anything you're especially happy for at the moment?
I'm especially happy to be heading to South Korea in 2 weeks or so.
Wondering if you all can give me some up-to-date advice for things to do, places to go, things to eat, and things to buy.
I'm definitely heading to Seoul, Busan and Jeju and will stop in other places on the way.
So far I plan to hike the Seoul fortress wall, cycle the Han river and hike Mt Halla. I'm all up for eating dumplings, pancakes, bibimba, and bbq. I want some glasses and some fall shoes if I can find some that fit (-my feet are 26cm).
I think this is too late for the suggestion, but I just came back from Korea for my two-weeks vacation. If I may offer my suggestion-
Seoul:
Take a Seoul city tour bus. It departs from SejongRo (about a block from genereal Yi SoonSin statue). It stops at major tourist attractions (Bus comes every 30 min).
You might avoid Monday and Tuesday since some of the places are closed on those days.
You can check some of the spots like BLUE HOUSE (Korean white house), InSaDong (shopping street for korean traditional stuff), ITaeWon (shopping district for foreigners. Personally I can skip this), NamDaeMoon Market, YongSan Museum, NamSan tranditional village etc.
And try PoJangMaCha (to taste SoJu and stuff) on DaeHakRo (meaning college road) at night.
Oh, I also enjoyed a few open markets - GaRak SiJang (fresh fruits, vegs, fishes), KyungDong SiJang (meat, dry products), but this might not be your thing.
Jeju:
Get the tourist map in the airport. You can use the taxi, or use tourist bus to check the places.
I enjoyed Walking the Ole Gil (walking trail around the island by the sea. Popular ones are no. 7 and 9. Will see DaeJangKeum pic board. You will also see women divers/like in TAMRA, the ISLAND - please ask)?
There is IlChulBong (east of island) to visit. You can visit sites for ALL IN and Life is Beautiful (east and south), as well as Lotte Hotel (Scent of Woman filmed. south). And there is a hugh open market close to the airport.
Busan:
I haven't visit there, but city is famous for HaeWoonDae beach and fish market.
Food and gift buying:
My favorites are grapes and bakeries. I am not into food too much, but I like JjaJangMyun (chinese restaurant) and boiled crabs (I bought the live ones and cooked it myself).
For gifts, you can try NamDaeMoon Market, InSaDong, any department stores, and DongDaeMoon (There are Towers equivalent to department stores).
You might want to check the food court while you are there, which usually on the top floor or bottom floor. and Markets usually have something called 'MukJa GolBok which you sit on the outside and eat'.
In Jeju, you can have avalone portridge, and grilled fish (forgot the fish name).Jeju is also famous for Gyul (orange) and horses (if you visit ranches).
For the gift, I bought HaRooBang (small stone statue you find in any gift shop) and other dry fish stuff.
Hope this helps if you ever had a chance to read this.
Have fun!
I just dropped by to say hi to all DBers.. on my way to attend a book launch of the latest installment of my favorite graphic novel, Trese. :D Its tagline is: "When crime takes a turn for the weird, the police call Alexandra Trese." Trese is Spanish for "thirteen."
After spending two weeks watching Dong Yi for four hours every night, I finally finished it. I'm now officially jumping on the Bae Soo Bin bandwagon-- I didn't much pay attention to Jun Se in Shining Inheritance, but I'm sold on Chun Soo in Dong Yi. I now plan to pick up watching Painter of the Wind again after I get home tonight... more Bae Soo Bin :D And now, as the great-grand-foster-nephew of his Dong Yi character, lol.
I was a bit confused over the appearance of the child Dong Yi at the end though-- I thought it was another child with the same name, since Chun Soo sees her at the grave and she mentions it being Suk-bin's grave. But when she turns at the end, there seems to be an implication that she turns into the adult one?
LOL! I haven't been tackled in ages! I forgot the fun :D
Saturday was something of a loss (my own fault) but I started to pick myself back up in the evening and today, Sunday, is going pretty well. I was somewhat distracted during church (again my own fault) by a story idea, but now I'm getting my NaNo soundtrack together before going out w/mom to a speaking engagement she has this afternoon :)
I got such a fantastic response to my question about the nuances of the Korean language last week that I'm going to go ahead and ask something again:
So, many people have commented (and I've seen) that the Korean culture of bumping into people is different from the American culture...
I was just in the convenience store, waiting in line, and someone jostled me from behind, making me bump into the "grandpa" in front of me.
No damage was caused to either of us, but I instinctively wanted to say "Sorry" or "Pardon me," but from all I understand, those phrases aren't used by Koreans in such casual situations.
In the end, I said "Choesong haeyo," and he gave me kind of a look, but then we were distracted by a woman with her dog (who was sniffing around our legs), and the woman spoke to me in quite fluent English, telling me how her dog liked strangers...
Really, in NY, for example, it's okay if you're rude if you voice an apology for it. I just don't know the comparable rules in Seoul... and are they different for a foreigner?
“Choesong haeyo,” is good. I don't think they are different. It just that, To me, Korean people are not too friendly/show emotions toward strangers (Once you know them, they couldn't be more nicer.)
Is anyone else super happy that they managed to make such an awesomely heart-breaking love story have a happy ending? For those of you who refused to watch the princess's man due to the "predictable" bad ending, WATCH IT! you'll be satisfied in the end.
Argh, I before I forget again, is anyone doing NaNoWriMo this year?
If you don't know, NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month. During November, you sign up at the website to write 50,000 words in 30 days. They have to be brand new words that you've not put on the page before (though the idea can have been ruminating for ages) and it can be on anything. There's no limit to how much you can write, just how little. There's also no real prize, except the glory of winning! Which is pretty glorious when you do it. The group that started it, now known as the Office of Light and Letters, donates to literacy programs primarily in the area where they are, I believe, but the whole movement has grown.
I've done it for several years, and have skipped a few, but I'm doing it again this year. I think. Meep. Anywho, just curious if there'd be an fellow beaners losing their minds this year :)
Oh, that's fantastic! I have novels dancing around in my head all the time... this kind of thing could be just the impetus I need to get my thoughts on paper and out there!
My job is to watch the rugrats whilst my writer "sister-wife" writes her novel. She tells me when she sells the first one, she's taking us ALL to Italy, so I have a vested interest, you see.
Just finished Coffee Prince less than 5 minutes ago. May I PLEASE go to Korea and hug every single one of those adorable people and tell them thank you for bringing such a sweet story to my life?
JoAnne CP was the first KDrama that had me bawling during and long after it was over. It was also the first Kdrama I downloaded the OST for and now I listen to the CP OST every day!
Left me with a very happy feeling...unlike 4 am this morning, when I finished A Love to Kill sobbing hysterically, wiping my eyes to clear the tears so I could see, even hiccuping from crying so hard. Had to watch it on Youtube directly since every link EVERYWHERE is broken, and even then some of the episodes were missing and so I found myself in the desperate position of having to watch some episodes in Spanish - followed along ok, had to google translate a couple things...but was laughing at myself for watching a foreign movie in a second foreign language. And...um...just bought the DVD set off Amazon.

Can I just say... all of my Korean elementary school students were aware of his death, and found it salient enough to bring it up in class...
Yeah, the US is globally dominant, and blah blah blah, but can you all think of an entrepreneur from another country whose passing even 6th-graders in the US would all be aware of?

R.I.P. Steve Jobs...

What an amazing innovator he was!

RIP Steve.

RIP STeve Jobs

I was never really into Apple products (big fan of Pixar though!), but when I heard of his passing, it felt like an era has ended. It's hard to imagine a world without Steve Jobs. I don't think there will be another innovator as amazing and influential in my lifetime.

Sad news. But I'm happy for him that his pain has ended, and that he was able to make an indelible mark before he left.
And thank you Steve for helping make our lives a lot more fun and easier by putting out products (with your team) that do just that.
No more stressful deadlines and fierce competitions.
Rest in peace, Mr. Jobs.

Hello everyone. Happy friday.

I'm hoping for some sort of redemption with the Finale... pretty please?
aoiaheen
October 7, 2011 at 1:01 PM

At least Dae Un did something useful for once!

-it is set in the Goryeo period of history.

ah, but there was a kiss - between Ji and Gwang Taek. Heck, they even got some implied nookie, way on back in episode...2 I think.
Most sageuk's are seriously chaste. I think SKKS, which is fusion to the max, had more kissing than most other sageuk's put together.
And hey, back away from the General. MINE! You thought I didn't see that, eh? No, my radar for poachers of my ILU is good. LOL!

hello everybody,
happy Friday.. so how was your week?
i've been revisiting old dramas of late and I watched 'Tatta
Hitotsu No Koi' again.. IMHO, the best drama about the'ideal, young, first serious love'.
realistic(though it is hard to believe that the rich girl-poor guy love
would work out in real life)
beautiful OST to top it..
ohh, the initial days when one is hopelessly in love!! noone should miss it..
and who else is looking fwd to '1000 day promise'..Su Ae looks amazing in the promos and
I'm sure KRW make it worth the 2 yr wait(he looks too skinny though.. expected him to beef up
after MS)..
and now that 'Princess's Man' has a happy ending, i'm tempted to watch it.. worth it or too melodramatic?..
and oh yeah, RIP Steve Jobs..

I have a statistics project to do, so I'm considering one that compares the number of wrist-grabs, back hugs, piggyback rides, brooding shower scenes, and soju shots in rom-coms versus say, melodramas or saeguks.

Have a lovely weekend, guys!

10. We lived mostly happily ever after.

Required fields are marked *
Shel
October 8, 2011 at 7:42 AM

Happy Friday! :-)

October 7, 2011 at 7:30 AM

October 7, 2011 at 9:17 AM

Sylvia

I think drama beans did recap SKKS. It was fun those days. You can try skipping ep 4 then. Just jump right into ep 7. You can't miss the beginning of ep 8. It is hilarious. It's the best K drama scene that I have ever seen.

Yes, I realized that he was the murdered boy when we got a better look at him in the flashbacks... before that he just looked very familiar!

October 8, 2011 at 4:37 AM
I thought the ending of HGD was EXACTLY as it should've been, and the only possible finish that was narratively consistent.
I'm not the crying type, but yeah, it made me sad, but I couldn't be outraged, cause one was left with the feeling that the appropriate changes had a better chance of happening than they did earlier, right?
Sethe
October 8, 2011 at 7:11 PM
Ummm... sorry... what I said there was a little unclear, I think.

My new project for the week is trying to get my mother into kdramas ('cuz I need to spread the addiction *cough* excuse me, wealth). I'm thinking MNIKSS is the best for a first timer who loved Bridget Jones's Diary, but does anyone have any better suggestions? Those are both great dramas to start with and they kind of lull her into a sense of security about kdramas ( unconvincing or absent charming second leads). My starter list would have
Soulmate
Samsoon
City Hall
Bad Couple
The woman Who still wants to marry
I think after city hall she'll want to see other cha seung won dramas and you can take it from there. Good Luck

Hey all :)

Ricky Dear, *HUGS*

It has its moments, but I have some issues with high school teacher student relationships. I know they are common in manga and dramas, but even if the student is over 18. I have
some problems with it, called it a cultural shock, if you want.

Jomo!

Happy Friday everyone!
I hope you all enjoy your weekend!

Hello 'waves to everyone' before going to bed.

Happy OT Friday everyone.
Would appreciate very much your help.

[Background: Here in the US, we're totally fat and hate exercising. We're looking for quick fixes, people will do anything and BUY anything in order to try to get slim without working at it. Some of these products have unfortunate sexual implications. So now the industry is getting mocked. And deservedly so.]

Christie is a state or city politician right? I think it's possible for anyone to get any place in state or city politics. These kinds of politicians are actively involved in the administration and policies for everyday life for the individual or local business and can be successful on those merits alone.

Two part comment
1) I need help.

The same sort of happened with Secret Garden (half of it was in 2011), but things went down by the last 5 or 6 episodes.
Then Protect the Boss, Best Love, and City Hunter.

For me these are on my list of 2011 notables:

It doesn't make much sense.
leonardswench
October 8, 2011 at 9:30 AM
Yes, I'm going to have to back OCKOALA up on the subbing nightmare that most City Hall watchers suffer under: the crisp slapping dialogue is mostly LOST in translation on Dramafever ... Samsooki's recaps are the place to pick it up.
It's a shame such a sharp, witty drama has been so badly translated that it is losing fans and discouraging even those of us who are faithful to it from recommending it.

Also, try reading this post: http://www.dramabeans.com/2007/09/the-sageuk-bandwagon/
Javabeans' perspective helped me give sageuks another go, and now I watch most of them with enjoyment. I don't think I got the "genre" at first and had a tough time transitioning.
Regardless of whether you take another historical plunge, HAPPY WATCHING!

The last cute guy I saw who was interested in me was when I was on vacation! >:O. I'm also a private teacher so in that aspect of my life, the only men I meet are the 14-year-old boys that I teach, or their parents...Helas, what to do?

Kampai! Cin Cin! Cheers! Salut!

Hi CMR!!! :) Happy Weekend to you!
Seeing the Korean Day parade must be loads of fun. I can't wait to see the pics.
For a minute there, I thought you were in Korea. I was part-excited for you and part-jealous. :D I miss Korea... neomu, neomu, neomu!
Hihi! It must be sooo nice to be working with cute guys around.

Izzie Smile!!!! Happy Weekend!

Looking forward to what you say.
Thanks in advance.

Have fun!

Happy weekend!
