Song Joong-ki gets his face on currency
by | October 8, 2011 | 33 Comments

Ha. The netizens strike again with their parody and Photoshop skills. This time, they’ve taken Song Joong-ki and put him on the manwon bill (the equivalent to $10), a tie-in to his latest drama Tree With Deep Roots, where he plays King Sejong the Great in his youth. (King Sejong is also the actual face on the currency; see below.)

The image first popped up on the drama’s official website in the UCC corner, with punny captions about Song playing young Yi-do (later Sejong). Naturally, you can’t leave out Han Seok-kyu, who will play the adult Sejong for the majority of the drama’s run.

Tree With Deep Roots premiered this week on Wednesday after much pre-show buzz, although its ratings weren’t as high as hoped for (9.5%, on the low side for what producers were hoping would be the next Queen Seon-deok). However, it had to contend with the Princess’s Man finale, so the real test will be to see how it fares in the coming weeks against new show Man of Honor. It’s the battle of high expectations, since both series are produced by teams whose last projects hit national drama status: Tree With Deep Roots is preceded by Queen Seon-deok, and Man of Honor preceded by Baker King Kim Tak-gu.

So, what’ll it be? KBS or SBS? Sageuk or melo? Royalty or baseball? Only time will tell.

^^;; Do you mean won? ’cause Joon-ki-ssi on a American dollar bill would have the powdered wig and that would be all kinds of funny.

      • 2.1.1 row.an

Joong Ki + powdered wig! oh no, now I REALLY want to see that…

quick, somebody, put him on a dollar bill!

  9. supah

Oooh… Where can I get me some of these? *makes grabby hands*

Nooo… Hahah… Not another Queen Seon-deok please, haha! Though I did like many parts of QSD till it tanked.

I’ve really liked the first two episodes, Song Joongki was on fire like I’ve never seen him before, I always knew he was talented… but he’s still taken me by surprise.
And his scenes with Baek Yoonshik are freakin’ magnificent. Moarrr!
I don’t doubt it won’t collapse later as I don’t think the writer is nearly as skilled to carry on such a premise. But you just never know.

I’ve seen the tree with deep roots in youtube and the drama is beautiful. There is no subs yet so i dont understand whats going on but still the drama is gorgeous. Even more beautiful than queen seon dok. Makes you feel you are watching a movie and not a tv series. I want more of this series.

I would hoard those man wons instead of spending LOLOL

  12. 12 jlinTeng

agreed. it’s like watching a movie which me want more and more.. song joo ki is so freaking adorable

I was actually very impressed with Song Joong Ki’s acting in the first two episodes. He was lovable and playful in Sungkyunkwan Scandal with his Guhro bromance, but I would say his acting kicked up a notch here. It’s more serious and subtle in Tree with Deep Roots.

This time period is such a fascinating time in Korean history, endlessly covered in movies and kdramas. I think it’s because King Sejong’s father, King Taejong’s lifetime was so politically fraught with assassinations and political upheavals. And Sejong’s reign saw the repercussions of such actions, while Sejong attempted to be a stable ruler. Anyway, I hope this sageuk continues to deliver. Now that Princess’ Man is over, I need to get my sageuk fix elsewhere.

Why not both? That’s what I’ll be doing.

  15. 15 Lizzie

Gasp!Did you see the news? Han Chae Won commited suicide in august but just now the news come to public…

  16. 16 Francesca

Bwahahahahaaa!!! I want that SJK money!

  17. 17 HeadsNo2

I really, really, really hope that Tree With Deep Roots will win the ratings battle. Sageuks normally do anyway, right? I feel like it would be sad if the next ‘Queen Seon Deok’ got beaten out by the next ‘Tak Gu’. Not that there aren’t merits to good dramas with makjang elements, but… Jang Hyuk fighting!! T_T (but those of us online get the privilege of watching both, so that is definitely what I will be doing!)

Jang Hyuk is good but PIE is better!
      PIE for the Win!!!

  18. 18 ris

LOL! I love it when netizens use their creative powers for good instead of evil!

  19. 19 Steamy Bun

LOL! That’s cute. I’ve never been a money-minded person but if bills start having Song Joong-kis on them I’ll probably start hoarding my cash.

  20. 20 ricky the royal highness

Awesome! This will definitely cure my shopaholic sister. If only I could convince her to watch dramas… *sigh*

  21. 21 Claire

why not watch both? i usually watch a lot of dramas at the same time…although i got busy these days and i need to catch up…i haven’t watch TPM yet which everyone’s says good…

and btw did you guys know that Jang Hyuk was nominated for 2011 international emmy awards for his Chuno? i hope he wins!

  22. 22 momosa

    Cute hats!

  23. 23 Jo

Tree with Deep Roots is beautiful! Seriously, I can see why they spent so much on production. Costumes, cinematography, etc. ITS BEAUTIFUL!
