2011 SBS Drama Awards

And now to conclude the Big 3 Broadcaster awards with SBS, featuring some of the most popular dramas of the year. Tree With Deep Roots was the big winner of the night, winning six trophies in total, including the Daesang for Han Seok-kyu, and the Top Excellence Award for Best Drama. There were no big upsets in any category, because they kind of have a category for everyone, but that’s the name of the game. I’m just happy for Han Seok-kyu’s big win, and the fact that he didn’t have to share the glory with any split-award hullabaloo.

Protect the Boss cleaned up as well, winning Best Couple and acting awards for the stars, as well as an additional netizen popularity award for Choi Kang-hee. As expected, Thousand Day Promise had a strong showing in the acting categories, as did fellow melodrama Scent of a Woman. It certainly was the year for tearjerkers. The winners…

New Star Award: Seo Hyo-rim (Scent of a Woman), Shin Hyun-bin (Warrior Baek Dong-soo), Ji Chang-wook (Warrior Baek Dong-soo), Jung Yumi (Thousand Day Promise), Wang Ji-hye (Protect the Boss), Jin Se-yeon (My Daughter Flower), Lee Jae-yoon (My Love By My Side), Im Soo-hyang (New Tales of Gisaeng), Kim Jaejoong (Protect the Boss), Gu Hara (City Hunter)

Kim Sun-ah and Lee Dong-wook arrived together, winning my vote for handsomest couple of the evening. Her dress is a perfect shade of deep burgundy, and an awesome mix between simple and sexy. It might even be a little plain if it wasn’t slit up to there and worn with the blingy shoes, but she makes it look stunning. Lee Dong-wook has looked better — that white bowtie doesn’t do much for me and his tux isn’t really the best fit — that combined with the scruffiness makes me sigh, but he’s got Kim Sun-ah on his arm, so that amps up his style considerably.

Shin Se-kyung is wearing a beautiful shade, one of the few pops of color all night long. I don’t know what’s going on with the gold papier-mache that got glue-gunned to her bodice before she went out the door, but I wish I could undo it. Other than that, she looks fantastic. Here she is arriving with her Tree co-star Yoon Je-moon, who’s kind of rocking the lounge singer look, but pulling it off.

Oh, Jang Hyuk. Is there anything else to say, other than this man knows how to work a suit? Swoon.

Best Couple Choi Kang-hee and Ji Sung, arriving together, being cute and flirty. Love. He looks great, and she always veers a little too cutesy for me, but the look works for this drama, and their fun chemistry on the red carpet.

Lee Yo-won went and got a dress for someone twice her age, which I just don’t understand. At first I thought it was just safe and boring, but then I saw the back… and realized that it gets worse. Did the dressmaker run out of the fabric for the back? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure my grandma’s got curtains in the same pattern.

Now THIS is how to wear gold on the red carpet. Everything about this dress says: Gimme An Award, stat. Jung Yumi (Thousand Day Promise) wears her dress with confidence, and her styling is adorable. People should always glow this much at awards ceremonies.

Hottie of the night. Hey, Kim Rae-won where was all this hotness in Thousand Day Promise? I need your next drama to feature this guy, and not Mopey McGee, k? This is the perfect example of how sometimes, tuxes are hotter than post-army shower scenes. Rawr.

Wang Ji-hye looks pretty, but it’s not really a standout dress. It’s safe and familiar, but she wears it with a smile.

Here’s Jin Tae-hyun, who won an acting award for weekend drama Pure Pumpkin Flower, in a slim-fitted tux.

Im Soo-hyang won a newcomer award for New Tales of Gisaeng. It’s another familiar red carpet look, just like Wang Ji-hye’s dress, though I like the cut of this one a little better. The black ribbon is eye-catching, and I like her small but blingy accessories.

Eom Ki-joon! I love you, Dr. Poopypants, but you look terrible. The casual suit, the gold tie that peeks through your single-buttoned-button, the sheepish look, the crazy hair… it’s just all wrong. But gah, I love you. Next time hire a stylist. Or fire your current one.

Jin Se-yeon won a new star award for My Daughter Flower, and this was her first time on the red carpet. She looks adorably fresh, and her white dress is actually a casual-enough cut that it doesn’t look bridal. I love the headband. Everything about her look is perfect for a newcomer — youthful and simple.

Yoon So-yi (Warrior Baek Dong-soo) had one of the best put-together looks of the night — perfect makeup, black accessories with a sleek black gown that looks gorgeous on her statuesque figure. She’s had a great year, and it shows on her face.

Lee So-yeon won a Top Excellence award for My Love By My Side, and she wears the other black dress of the evening, which I just can’t get behind. Her hair and makeup look great, but does anyone else get the sense that the designer took a wedding gown and dipped it in a tub of tar? It’s a jet black wedding dress, which I suppose could work as a statement if you were in a Tim Burton movie, but on the red carpet it looks dour.

I love Shin Hyun-bin‘s dress (Warrior Baek Dong-soo). It’s such a happy cherry color, with just enough frothy goodness for a young actress’ red carpet outing. I wish I could say the same for the way she looks — I want to re-do her hair and makeup and put ten pounds on her, but the black and red of the dress and shoes makes me smile.

Did hell freeze over? Because Lee Min-ho actually looks confident, dashing, and comfortable on the red carpet! It’s a freaking miracle. Who knew the day would come when the geeky, slouchy Lee Min-ho would turn into THIS guy? Humona.

His City Hunter co-star Lee Jun-hyuk doesn’t look too shabby himself. I’m now imagining the two boys running out of the ceremony together to fight crime in their tuxes. Mmmmm…

Aw, Ji Chang-wook, you look twelve, under-dressed, uncomfortable, and super gawky. Are you the new Lee Min-ho of awards ceremonies? On the upside, you’ll have your moment. On the downside, it’s not gonna be today, in that suit.

I’m sure it’s a statement. And hip or too cool for school. But I just don’t like it. Kim Jaejoong picked up an award for Protect the Boss, and arrived in all black, which would have been fine save for the matte-shiny combo goin’ on all over the place, especially with that cummerbund that only serves to cut his figure at the waist and make a very tall and thin guy look half his height. If he’d undo that cummerbund, button his shirt up, and wear it as a tie, it would do wonders.

Seo Hyo-rim‘s dress in a different cut would’ve been ugly, but the way it’s fitted actually makes the sheath-thing work. It’s gorgeous on her. I don’t like the bubblegum-pink lips with her red hair though, and would’ve liked to see her styled in a more clean, chic look.

Lee Jae-yoon picked up a New Star Award for My Love By My Side and just looks super happy to be there.

Lee Mi-sook could pull off a brown paper bag on the red carpet with her attitude, and though the dress isn’t really that great, she rocks it, like she rocks at life.

Oh, Jung Kyeo-woon. No, no, no. Double-breasted tux with pants hemmed to your ankles? Bob’s Big Boy hair? What on earth have they done to you?

Song Joong-ki takes the trophy for prettiest pretty boy. Wait, that’s not a prize? Well it should be.

Jeon Gwang-ryul (Warrior Baek Dong-soo), picking up his trophy with the most adorable smile. Yay, you look so cute with your gray bowtie and matching kerchief. Cuddly Ajusshi for the win.

Sung Hoon (New Tales of Gisaeng) takes the cake for Worst-Dressed Male. It’s holiday cater-waiter, casino doorman, lounge singer with the Peppermint Quintet. And it’s just wrong.

And Worst-Dressed Female goes to… Seo Woo, whose dress is so wrong that she knows it, and is hanging her head in every picture. On the upside, I love her hair. The downside’s too steep to counter it, but let’s just say that the Wicked Witch of the West called and asked you to stop going through her underwear drawer.

So, does it mean SBS and KBS held their award show on the same night?
Because I watch KBS award and there I saw the lovely Song Joong ki, Ji Chang Wook and Jang Hyuk. (Ji Chang Wook pick up an award for Smile Donghae, Song Joong Ki and Jang Hyuk present the awards.) Does they attend both the award shows?? And how does that be possible? Do they just go back and forth to KBS and SBS??

Yes, both SBS and KBS held their drama awards last night, and it's possible to go back and forth. The 3 broadcasters (SBS, KBS, MBC) are headquartered in Yeoyido or (in the case of SBS) close to Yeoyido in Seoul, and it's not unusual to see stars shuttling back and forth when there are live events such as these. And why Song Joong-Ki didn't show up for the red carpet at SBS because he needed to present the popularity award at KBS in the first hour. Everyone was joking Jang Hyuk must have used 출상술 though (makes sense if you watched Tree With Deep Roots), because his award at SBS and presentation at KBS (the Daesang, as he was last year's winner) took place like within half an hour.

I was wondering the same thing too! Gotta see if they were wearing the same outfits for both events or not... or maybe they changed...

I don't think Jang Hyuk did, but Song Joong-Ki had enough time to change. :) This is what he looked like at KBS in the first hour (to present the Popularity Award), and you can tell his suit was much more formal for SBS.

TWDR is probably the only drama i whole-heartedly watch this year, and i love it so much. i can't wait to see the drama winning more bona fide awards this year :P

Worst-dressed would be Seo Woo and Kim Jaejoong to me. Seo Woo, what were you thinking?
Jaejoong, that hair, just... no, and his face... he looks so pale it just creeps me out

Really? I thought he looked pretty good, much better than his BOF days... and I agree, it feels like city hunter never aired.. it was aired this year, right? Surprised there were no awards whatsoever for that drama or its cast.

And is it just me or does it seem like seo woo is muttering to herself " Why did I wear this?" in the last picture ^_^

I actually LOVED his hair in the BOF days... But I don't think he'll still be able to pull it off now. Lol! I spent my whole summer doing nothing but watch one drama, City Hunter! It was the most entertaining Drama this year, erm last year. I was expecting Major awards for the show!

Idk, if I am disappointed or relieved that Minho and Minyoung didn't win Best Couple. On the one hand, I am disappointed because I am Lee Minho bias and thinks he should win everything. But as on the other hand, I am anti Minmin couple and don't think I can handle it....

Thrilled for the entire team at Tree With Deep Roots. I love that the PDs and the writers were also there to share the love with the actors (PD Jang Tae-Yoo sat at the main table, between Han Seok-Kyu and Song Joong-Ki, and the writer team of Kim Young-Hyun and Park Sang-Yeon were right behind them at the 2nd table), and I love they all went on the stage to accept the award for Best Drama. These ceremonies are mostly acting award ceremonies, so writers and PDs rarely get the spotlight, but the TwDR team deserved their moments last night.

And I absolutely loved Song Joong-Ki's acceptance speech, which was one of the best of the night. It was heartfelt, it was funny, it was emotional, and it only served to underscore how right the network was to recognize his work with the Producers Award. His special guest-starring turn didn't fit easily into their main categories, and everyone was wondering how or even whether SBS was going to reward him for one of the most acclaimed performances of the year. The Producers Award, voted by the PDs at the network, seemed like a good solution, but they had never awarded it to a special guest star before and it wasn't clear whether they'd take the risk and set a precedent with Song Joong-Ki. They have, they did, and if the reactions on and off screen are anything to go by, they were absolutely right to do so.

As always Kristi, your explanations & sharing of knowledge rocks! I was just wondering what the Producers Award really is (who voted it and for what category) and here you are explaining it even before we ask :)

I was extremely happy that Song J.K won something at least with his stellar performance in TWDR he absolutely deserved this and more (hopefully) from Baek Sang Awards later on this year.

Btw, does anyone know where I can watch SBS awards ceremony with english subs?

Required fields are marked *

Not sure SJK would be a contender at the Baeksangs. He wouldn't be eligible for the main acting categories (Daesang/Grand Prize, Best Actor), or the newcomer award... Maybe the popularity award, but his guest-starring status in TwDR would still put him at a disadvantage. He was incredibly popular (and remains popular) with his work (two of his scenes, from eps. 2 and 8, made the "Best of..." list in the TwDR special, and the #1 scene, the forest scene in ep. 2, remains the most quoted TwDR scene to-date), but... only four eps., six at best... I can see them/the judges wavering.

I don't know if there are subs for the awards, but I've recapped SJK's speech here, if you're interested.

Kristi, thank you so very very very much for the link you provided. SJK's speech was touching indeed. I'd been trying everywhere to find out what he said in the speech, but it was like looking for a needle in a haystack (unless if you're fluent in Korean) :)

Yep, I agree that SJK's forest scene was one of the most memorable moments in the drama that I like to watch over and over again. Even now after watching the drama 5x (complete from 1-24), I still never get bored.

On average, and according to AGB Nielsen (which is what the networks and advertisers follow), both Tree With Deep Roots (19.4%) and Princess Man over at KBS (18.9%) drew higher ratings than Sign (18.7%). It's with the finales that Sign did the best (25.5%) vs. TwDR's 25.4% and TPM's 24.9%.

Having said that, agreed it's shameful that SBS didn't reward Sign, even if with many of these award ceremonies (not just in Korea), it hurts your chances to be shown early in the (eligibility) year.

Is there a k-drama awards spanning all shows that is not self-determined by the major networks responsible for the programming, like one given by a body similar to the U.S. Academy of TV Arts & Sciences, or a People's Choice type thing? If not, that is sad, as I imagine the cable dramas receive no red carpet recognition. Otherwise, there's no reason why the "awards" shouldn't be distributed more evenly among each network's yearly offerings. How can it be that 49 Days got no recognition, aside from the deserved nod to LYW playing her dual role, under these circumstances?

there is though!

i quote dramabeans on the kbs drama awards thread:

'For a more straight-up competitive awards ceremony, look to spring’s Baeksang Awards, which is similar to the Golden Globes in honoring both film and drama productions. The Baeksangs aren’t without their own issues, and popularity definitely comes into play there as well, but it chooses its winners from across broadcasters — which should be interesting now that we have some potential cable spoilers entering the fray.'

we only really watch these things for the pretty dresses and the pretty men!

Whoops - read this article first before seeing that paragraph, thanks! I love the fashion gossip too, but I also like to see good work rewarded in a meaningful way. It's fun to watch your fave get an American Music Award-type of thing where it's all decided by insiders using the show as a big commercial for their vested interests, but it's a different level of achievement to have critics, fans or industry peers choose winners from across all entertainment offerings in a discipline.

Hmm... SBS seems to have had a lot of decent dramas this year :) TWDRs, PTB, TDP, CH, SOAW etc etc. Yippee - love the turnout and the cute onscreen couplings :)

Sun-Ah & Dong Wook - ubber ubber cute

Same thing with Ji Sung and Choi Kang Yee

Just soo much pretty in this show.

Congrats to all the big winners! :)

Kim sun ah and Lee Dongwook looked gorgeous! I'm still on the fence about whether or not i like his scruffy facial hair though.

Your comment about Lee Minho cracked me up, its adorable that he looks confident and it makes me overjoyed.

And of course i can not miss Joongki in all of this, he looks great as always, i just want to pinch his cheeks everytime i see him and then immediately swoon (into his arms.. ok i need to end my fantasy now xD)
