2011 SBS Drama Awards

And now to conclude the Big 3 Broadcaster awards with SBS, featuring some of the most popular dramas of the year. Tree With Deep Roots was the big winner of the night, winning six trophies in total, including the Daesang for Han Seok-kyu, and the Top Excellence Award for Best Drama. There were no big upsets in any category, because they kind of have a category for everyone, but that’s the name of the game. I’m just happy for Han Seok-kyu’s big win, and the fact that he didn’t have to share the glory with any split-award hullabaloo.
Protect the Boss cleaned up as well, winning Best Couple and acting awards for the stars, as well as an additional netizen popularity award for Choi Kang-hee. As expected, Thousand Day Promise had a strong showing in the acting categories, as did fellow melodrama Scent of a Woman. It certainly was the year for tearjerkers. The winners…

Kim Sun-ah and Lee Dong-wook arrived together, winning my vote for handsomest couple of the evening. Her dress is a perfect shade of deep burgundy, and an awesome mix between simple and sexy. It might even be a little plain if it wasn’t slit up to there and worn with the blingy shoes, but she makes it look stunning. Lee Dong-wook has looked better — that white bowtie doesn’t do much for me and his tux isn’t really the best fit — that combined with the scruffiness makes me sigh, but he’s got Kim Sun-ah on his arm, so that amps up his style considerably.
Shin Se-kyung is wearing a beautiful shade, one of the few pops of color all night long. I don’t know what’s going on with the gold papier-mache that got glue-gunned to her bodice before she went out the door, but I wish I could undo it. Other than that, she looks fantastic. Here she is arriving with her Tree co-star Yoon Je-moon, who’s kind of rocking the lounge singer look, but pulling it off.
Oh, Jang Hyuk. Is there anything else to say, other than this man knows how to work a suit? Swoon.
Best Couple Choi Kang-hee and Ji Sung, arriving together, being cute and flirty. Love. He looks great, and she always veers a little too cutesy for me, but the look works for this drama, and their fun chemistry on the red carpet.
Lee Yo-won went and got a dress for someone twice her age, which I just don’t understand. At first I thought it was just safe and boring, but then I saw the back… and realized that it gets worse. Did the dressmaker run out of the fabric for the back? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure my grandma’s got curtains in the same pattern.
Now THIS is how to wear gold on the red carpet. Everything about this dress says: Gimme An Award, stat. Jung Yumi (Thousand Day Promise) wears her dress with confidence, and her styling is adorable. People should always glow this much at awards ceremonies.
Hottie of the night. Hey, Kim Rae-won where was all this hotness in Thousand Day Promise? I need your next drama to feature this guy, and not Mopey McGee, k? This is the perfect example of how sometimes, tuxes are hotter than post-army shower scenes. Rawr.
Wang Ji-hye looks pretty, but it’s not really a standout dress. It’s safe and familiar, but she wears it with a smile.
Here’s Jin Tae-hyun, who won an acting award for weekend drama Pure Pumpkin Flower, in a slim-fitted tux.
Im Soo-hyang won a newcomer award for New Tales of Gisaeng. It’s another familiar red carpet look, just like Wang Ji-hye’s dress, though I like the cut of this one a little better. The black ribbon is eye-catching, and I like her small but blingy accessories.
Eom Ki-joon! I love you, Dr. Poopypants, but you look terrible. The casual suit, the gold tie that peeks through your single-buttoned-button, the sheepish look, the crazy hair… it’s just all wrong. But gah, I love you. Next time hire a stylist. Or fire your current one.
Jin Se-yeon won a new star award for My Daughter Flower, and this was her first time on the red carpet. She looks adorably fresh, and her white dress is actually a casual-enough cut that it doesn’t look bridal. I love the headband. Everything about her look is perfect for a newcomer — youthful and simple.
Yoon So-yi (Warrior Baek Dong-soo) had one of the best put-together looks of the night — perfect makeup, black accessories with a sleek black gown that looks gorgeous on her statuesque figure. She’s had a great year, and it shows on her face.
Lee So-yeon won a Top Excellence award for My Love By My Side, and she wears the other black dress of the evening, which I just can’t get behind. Her hair and makeup look great, but does anyone else get the sense that the designer took a wedding gown and dipped it in a tub of tar? It’s a jet black wedding dress, which I suppose could work as a statement if you were in a Tim Burton movie, but on the red carpet it looks dour.
I love Shin Hyun-bin‘s dress (Warrior Baek Dong-soo). It’s such a happy cherry color, with just enough frothy goodness for a young actress’ red carpet outing. I wish I could say the same for the way she looks — I want to re-do her hair and makeup and put ten pounds on her, but the black and red of the dress and shoes makes me smile.
Did hell freeze over? Because Lee Min-ho actually looks confident, dashing, and comfortable on the red carpet! It’s a freaking miracle. Who knew the day would come when the geeky, slouchy Lee Min-ho would turn into THIS guy? Humona.
His City Hunter co-star Lee Jun-hyuk doesn’t look too shabby himself. I’m now imagining the two boys running out of the ceremony together to fight crime in their tuxes. Mmmmm…
Aw, Ji Chang-wook, you look twelve, under-dressed, uncomfortable, and super gawky. Are you the new Lee Min-ho of awards ceremonies? On the upside, you’ll have your moment. On the downside, it’s not gonna be today, in that suit.
I’m sure it’s a statement. And hip or too cool for school. But I just don’t like it. Kim Jaejoong picked up an award for Protect the Boss, and arrived in all black, which would have been fine save for the matte-shiny combo goin’ on all over the place, especially with that cummerbund that only serves to cut his figure at the waist and make a very tall and thin guy look half his height. If he’d undo that cummerbund, button his shirt up, and wear it as a tie, it would do wonders.
Seo Hyo-rim‘s dress in a different cut would’ve been ugly, but the way it’s fitted actually makes the sheath-thing work. It’s gorgeous on her. I don’t like the bubblegum-pink lips with her red hair though, and would’ve liked to see her styled in a more clean, chic look.
Lee Jae-yoon picked up a New Star Award for My Love By My Side and just looks super happy to be there.
Lee Mi-sook could pull off a brown paper bag on the red carpet with her attitude, and though the dress isn’t really that great, she rocks it, like she rocks at life.
Oh, Jung Kyeo-woon. No, no, no. Double-breasted tux with pants hemmed to your ankles? Bob’s Big Boy hair? What on earth have they done to you?
Song Joong-ki takes the trophy for prettiest pretty boy. Wait, that’s not a prize? Well it should be.
Jeon Gwang-ryul (Warrior Baek Dong-soo), picking up his trophy with the most adorable smile. Yay, you look so cute with your gray bowtie and matching kerchief. Cuddly Ajusshi for the win.
Sung Hoon (New Tales of Gisaeng) takes the cake for Worst-Dressed Male. It’s holiday cater-waiter, casino doorman, lounge singer with the Peppermint Quintet. And it’s just wrong.
And Worst-Dressed Female goes to… Seo Woo, whose dress is so wrong that she knows it, and is hanging her head in every picture. On the upside, I love her hair. The downside’s too steep to counter it, but let’s just say that the Wicked Witch of the West called and asked you to stop going through her underwear drawer.

I am surprised and disguntada at once. How is it possible that 49 days has almost no reward?, This is too unfair. Missing more categories. SBS conveyed dramas very good this year (I saw most of them), but not give awards correct.

kaoru, I share your disappointment. 49 Days was not among the five dramas nominated for Best Drama (and for that matter, neither was City Hunter). Jung Il Woo, inexplicably, wasn't even nominated.
PS IMHO Lee Yo Won (congrats on two well-deserved awards) looked elegant and classy in her beautiful dress.

SunWook are the best, gorgeous and handsome, perfect couple. can't ask anything more. congrats to SOAW cast who got nominated and received their precious awards, they deserved, and to Sunny and Wook whom i praised as an excellent and brilliant performers, i salute! a little bit disappointed for not getting the best couple award, but overall i can't disregard the cuteness of the star couple of the night and in my eyes... the SunWook, forever!

Lee Yo won's dress looks like she sew it at home and forgot the back piece. Eom Ki joon looks like he gained weight or his jacket shrank.Shin Hyun bin's avante garde red dress is swimming on her thin frame. She doesn't have the chest to carry it off.Kim Jaejoong looks like he forgot to get completely dress for the occasion.Seo Hyo rim needs a necklace and larger earrings because she seems bare on top. Jung Kye woon pants are too short, and the pompadour hairdo looks silly with a tux.Sung Moon looks like a circus MC. Seo Woo should have her head down in shame for wearing that peek-a-boo monstrosity.Sometimes I wonder if the stars look at themselves in the mirror before they go to an award show.Tsk.Tsk.Tsk.However, some got it right. Yes, Loved Lee Min ho and Kim Rae Won. They know how to wear a tux and really look handsome.

How did Kim Sun-ah and Lee Dong-wook NOT win Best Couple. I reject this award show! It's like when I didn't make National Honor Society all over again! Come to think of it I reject the nor society too! Wait is it too late to reject something if it was over 10 years ago? :)

If you haven't found the links on soompi and such, I think SBS will upload the videos to YouTube eventually. They've put up the Gayo awards already on their channel, and I'd expect the drama awards by this week.
FYI, most of the awards for TwDR (aka the big ones) took place in the 2nd hour, ie, Shin Se-Kyung, Song Joong-Ki, then everyone on stage for Best Drama, then Jang Hyuk and finally Han Seok-Kyu. Yoon Je-Moon won an award in the 1st hour, but it was for his work in Midas. He sat with his TwDR co-stars though.

Thanks to GF and Dramabeans for another fun-filled romp through the "Fashion Do's and Don't of Year-End Award Shows." Granted, I wish some American actors and actress would take such costuming risks for their award shows... the last few Oscar telecasts have been boring-as-hell with same ol' dresses and tuxes. Playing it safe, indeed!
But I digress. I'm shaking my head over how these nominations and awards are shovelled out every year. GF, please correct me if I'm wrong, but a Newcomer Award is given to a recipient because it's their first *production* at SBS/KBC/MBC, ne? Some of those 10 that received trophies have been acting for ages, but just simply had the bad timing to do some of their best work for SBS in 2011. Hence, me getting all crabby-grumpy-pouty when Ji Chang Wook could only grab a Newbie Bouquet -- here's your Consolation Prize; you'll have better luck in the next vehicle you take on for SBS. Oh for lame.
I can't seem to find a list of the nominees at all online anywhere, but I bet it was a split decision between either Jeon Gwang Ryul or Choi Min Soo getting the award. BUT BUT BUT (if it's true) leaving Yoo Seung Ho off the nominees list for WBDS is a freakin' travesty in itself!! I mean, COME ON!! WTF are those people smoking at SBS anyway?!? Hmpf.
And Wookie? Sweetie, I'd pay good money to watch you walk the Red Carpet in sackcloth and ashes, but you need to have a lonnnng talk with your stylist. I know that you've been putting in massive hours on overnight shoots in the freezing weather and you're probably beat to a pulp... but you looked MUCH HOTTER the night before presenting at the SBS Entertainment Awards, all glam-tuxed-up and hair-straightened. YUM. The I-just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-gotta-go-to-an-Awards-Show suit and Poofy Hairstyle just didn't do it for me this year. And all you did was change your TIE in between shows? Big Heavy Sigh...
(But congrats for your wins nonetheless. Yay!)

Aw, Cherkell, your devotion... Choi Min-soo was one of the four nominees for an award that was second most covetable after the Daesang, it was him, Jang Hyuk, Lee Dong-wook and Kim Rae-won. Jang Hyuk and Kim Rae-won had to split it between them. Yes, for shame. I know Jang Hyuk chewed up some serious scenery in Tree -- but that, dammit, was Choi Min-soo's. Maybe it's a good thing ole' Cheon didn't make it to the ceremony.
I was all gung-ho about Best Couple going to Ji Chang-wook and Yoo Seung-ho, too. Or maybe this same sex coupling off (a la PotW/SKKS) is now passe?
Otherwise, shockingly enough, this awards ceremony is one of the nicest, most satisfying one ever. I mean Park Geun-hyung handing over the Lifetime Achievement Award to Kim Young-ok, Lee Beom-soo and Jang Hyuk hugging... Han Seok-kyu!! Han Seok-kyu smiling ear to ear as Song Joong-ki makes an acceotance speech... gahh!

LOL supah-chan. You've busted me. :) After seeing the Nominees List (kamsahamnida @cynkdf -- I'll have to check AsianMediaWiki from now on before opening my big mouth), those were some heavy hitters Min-soo ajusshi was up against. But I'm still really pissed off that Woon-ah wasn't even considered. Bastards.
I think the whole same-sex pairings are on their way out, with the exception of over at KBS, where Shin Ha-kyun and Jung Jin-young from "Brain" were nominated this year. Then they go and pick 4 other couplings to share the award. WhatEVAH.
Now that I've had the chance to watch all three Drama Awards shows back-to-back, I have to admit that SBS's ceremony was a bit more classy (for lack of a better word) and very well-attended. SBS blew everyone out of the park with their drama offerings in 2011. I smiled the most during this telecast than with the other two, only having to break out the kleenex during Joong-ki's acceptance speech. Sigh.
Now off to watch their respective Entertainment Awards shows. Sleep is overrated anyway... :)

TNX for the site! It's unbelievable that they wouldn't even consider Yoo Seung Ho's performance in WDBS as Skylord- Yeo Woon. I've seen most of the nominees' performances & YSH has the most memorable one. I hope he gets nominated for the Baeksang Awards...he had a pretty good year in both ratings/ tickets sold and performances...in both WBDS and movie Blind.

how is it that no one is mentioning Go Hyunjung!!! I know she wasn't a nominee for any of the awards, but she presented the Daesang to Han Sukkyu and dude!!! She looked AMAZING!!! Last year I just followed City Hunter and 49Days also half of PTB of SBS dramas... maybe someday i will finish PTB and take a peek of TWDR.

I Just don't get it !!! Why SBS Drama Awards 2011 only just picked one couple??? , unlike last year, which picked 3 couples (OMG) .... Actually Thousand Days Promise's and Scent of a Woman's couple get the chance to win it...

Glad there was no funny biz w/ the Daesang this time around w/ Han Seok-kyu deserving the Daesang and every other acting award that should come his way.
But the rest of the awards seem kinda, well, pointless (w/ all the sub-sub categories; guess you have to make as many people as possible happy).
Sorry, but Lee Dong-wook looks AWFUL; that short, colored/permed coiff and that pubescent stache makes him look like a porn star from the '70s.
For such a small girl, Shin Se-kyung is well-endowed.
Yoon So-yi looks really good; much better than in WBDS or her new drama.
Stated a while ago that Ji Chang-wook will be the next Lee Min-ho and blow up if he does a project that appeals to all the teenieboppers.
And I know this is a cultural thing, but anyone who isn't female AND in her teens shouldn't be the doing the whole pouty mouth/lips thing.

omg sun ah always looks so gorgeous!! i was totally hoping for lee min ho to show up with park min young, but i guess that was too much to ask for XDD
on the other hand, i still find LMH's smile to be very, very dorky, albeit in his adorably awkward way :D

I think Eom Ki-Joon just needed some glasses and to undo his button and he would've looked hot. :D
Kim Sun-Ah should've arrived on the arms of both Eom Ki-Joon AND Lee Dong-Wook! How hot would that have been!

I love Kim Sun Ah so much. She is the best actress. Scent Of A Woman is the best drama. (It give good thing for life is precious.) Kim Sun Ah & Lee Dong Wook are the best cute couple. I love Lee Yeon Jae & Kang Ji Wook & Scent Of A Woman & Team of Scent Of A Woman so much. ^^

To be honest, at first, I was kind of expecting City Hunter to lots of awards. This was way before the ceremony, by the way. However, when I watched TWDR, I have to say that was the BEST drama I had watched. I have to say that drama kept me more on my toes than City Hunter. Han Seok-kyu definetly deserved that award.

WHAT?! (Wait a minute! I must be going blind! -since I can't believe what I'm reading!) Emo girl? - and nothing for Yoo Seung Ho?! O.K. so, what's up w/ SBS? Can't see talent when it's in front of you?! - and not even a NOMINATION for YSHssi? He even had the top movie and drama at the same time! Ya'll at SBS are crazy not to even list him. (Well, from what I've read I guess I'm not the only one upset.)

Oh - and if anyone deserved a newcomer award from WBDS, it should've been Choi Yoon So (who played Goo Hyang, the Gingsaeng and Yeo Woon's 'partner' at HSC). Her performance was so good that it made it seemed like she was in the drama a lot more than Shin Hyun Bin.

I like Lee Yowon^s dress, I think she looked great. I am happy to know she won an award for her role in 49 Days. I was expecting the other cast especially Jung Il Woo to also receive one, but they were not even in the ceremony.

D: Why was there only one award for city hunter?? That drama was fantastic! Lee Min ho was absolutely awesome (and yes he did get recognized) but what about Bad Daddy? He should have really been mentioned >:( I don't mind the others but bad daddy should've gotten something. Plus, CH deserves more. In the long run, it became SBS's most successful drama for that year in terms of international popularity... SBS better not leave out amazing shows like that again.
And my, Minho looked gorgeous didn't he? *swoon*
