Whew. I didn’t get to this thread till late this evening. Got woken up at crack of dawn by my landlady pounding on my door yelling that there was a fire at the end of our alley, about four or five doors down from where we lived. Since I live in a particularly crowded part of Manila with houses all abutting each other, that was really scary. So I ran around crying because I could only carry my laptop and papers. Good thing the fire was put out before it got to our house. Then I remembered I had a doctor’s appointment (I have hypertension) and had to rush off to get lab tests done and see the doc. And then go off to do some holiday shopping at the bargain district. So now I’m bushed, and there’s no electricity at home. I hope it isn’t too hot without the electric fan.
First of all, wow! THAT is a morning!
(Where are you online if you have no power?)
Secondly, if you don’t use this scenario as the beginning of a drama script, I WILL!
Did you go to Greenhills?
I went there to buy loose pearls. I was surprised when the shop lady started knotting them right there in front of me and had the strand done quickly.
Hope your weekend gets better!
I’m at an internet cafe right now. I don’t want to go home yet!
Go ahead, do! I’ll probably use it in a story or something, but there’s always more than one way to use it.
Funny thing is I was having “Time of my Life” drama flashbacks. While everyone in that drama was panicking and running during the fire, people in my neighborhood were carrying stuff, but hanging around on their roofs watching.
Hehe I went to Divisoria. That was a crush, but it’s always fun checking out the night market. Funny, there aren’t too many people there yet because I was able to get in and out quite easily. Well, compared to those shuffle-one-step-at-a-time crushes that I experienced in past years.
Hope your electricity comes back soon!
Thanks, power was restored late last night, thank goodness.
I’m personally getting burnt out on kdramas lately. Maybe it was my decision to watch drama after drama during my break but I started getting pretty sick and tired of the same old rehash plot points over and over. Assholish male lead. Female lead who inexplicably falls for him. Second male lead who seems to be kinder yet won’t get the girl. Second female lead who’s either a bitch or worse. Yeah, I’m bringing up tired old crap that’s been regurgitated countless times I’m sure but it’s valid. Even dramas that try to move out of the familiar genre that kdramas usually occupy still fall for the trap. The only one this season that’s kept my interest throughout is Vampire Prosecutor (which is basically my crack while I wait for Boardwalk Empire episodes).
I’m sure someone will mention that American television does the same thing (cop procedurals mostly), but unlike most people cultural interest/obsession in foreign dramas isn’t enough for me since they aren’t very foreign to me at all.
Why not try something different?
Maybe one of the longer series where there are many stories going on, more than one romance, and LOTS of episodes to learn about the characters: Life is Beatiful or Giant.
There are a few that avoid the usual cliches, but you are also stepping out of the romcom room. They are also not trendy, so you don’t get the pretty clothes and purses.
I cannot recommend Time Between Dog and Wolf strongly enough. It really is like watching a film over 16 episodes. I fell hard for Lee Jun Ki who before that was just a really pretty boy.
H.I.T.T. with Ko Hyun Jung/Ha Jung Woo is one of those really good cop shows. LOOOOOOOVED the OTP a lot. They definitely were not cliche.
Lovers in Prague, if you haven’t seen it because it is one of the Lovers shows, is super duper. The cast they put together for it are mostly big screen actors now, and it is wonderful. Female lead is atypical almost on every level.
Que Sera Sera – I loved this funny, gloomy, dread-filled at times, sexy show. Eric Mun, Jung Yu-mi, Lee Kyu-han made an unpredictable team.
La Dolce Vita/Bittersweet Life – oooh la Lee Dong Wook! Oh Yeon-su, Jung Bo Suk. It’s sexy, messy, fascinating, scary, sad and did I mention sexy?
Not for the faint of heart, Sandglass, from 1995. Totally sucked me in to its madness and sadness. Epic journey through the rumbling and churning 70′s and 80′s and 90′s.
It left a mark I will never recover from.
All the sageuks out there are fab, too. Return of Iljimae is one of my favs. Lots of beauty and tears.
If you want, take a break and come back when your appetite is back. We’ll be here!
if you haven’t seen tree with deep roots, you should try it. It’s not romance based and very intriguing. The story is great.
Hello OT loves,
I will join in again tomorrow. My dongsaeng has hit a crucial part in her music theory/history studying and I’m going to go help her, doing my big sisterly duty! So, I won’t be able to get on today! But <3 to all.
DB & GF! i can’t wait for u girls to watch n give ur 2billion bucks worth on What’s Up & Padam Padam! omg. kim bum n his lookalikey im joo hwan r so rocking those shows! add kang hyuk to the equation. omigod. we r in good times! *instantly lies on floor lyk kang hyuk n wiggle in sheer happiness*

n oh the bromance w angel kim bummie in padam padam is just as gratuitous! ha.
seriously, how about dropping the variety shows n focusing on these 2 goodies?
I have a question for all ya’ll out there.
If you had two weeks of vacation, what metropolis in SE Asia would you visit? Tokyo? Seoul? Singapore? Kuala Lumpur? Taipei?
Whups, trying to make this a new entry and I goofed. Should I retype it?
Wouldn’t that depend on what you’d want to do/see?
My picks currently would be Seoul or Tokyo (but wouldn’t stay two weeks in Tokyo – would go to Kyoto or something as well).
Two weeks in Singapore seems a bit long?
Been to Taipei – lived there as a pre-teen so it’s deeply etched into my heart. If Taipei, I’d go outside the city as well, especially to see the Tarokko Gorge which is an amazing national park. Or Yelio (sea side… not really for swimming though).
Thanks. Basically, the sitch is this: I’m learning Japanese; various relatives have visited various countries and had pretty positive reports: Japan, Manilla, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Penang.
Five years ago I went to Great Britain and explored castles. Two years ago, I sang for the Pope at the Vatican during Christmas, so I was thinking of exploring the Southeast section of the world next year.
I’m learning Japanese, but, truth to tell, I’m just looking for someplace safe but outside my usual comfort zone, and don’t really have my heart set on any particular place. I’d just like to see some remnants of a 1000-year-plus civilization.
Kinda keeps in perspective my little 240-year old upstart country.
Well, all of those places are ‘safe’, especially Japan and Singapore. Maybe more petty crime in Manila and Malaysia? (But that wouldn’t keep me away.)
Sounds like Japan would be a good choice for you – as long as you don’t just stick to Tokyo. Kyoto is the old capital and I’m sure there are plenty of remnants of ancient culture there.
Taiwan would work for that too, you can find everything there – modern metropolis, old culture, etc. but it’s not as overrun by foreign tourists like other places in Asia (e.g. Thailand).
Singapore (which I only vaguely remember from visiting as a child) is probably predominantly a modern city.
I have friends that live in Kuala Lumpur, they like it okay but say Penang is much, much nicer. More culture there.
If you don’t go quite so far east, India and Nepal are absolutely fascinating parts of the world and have lots of ancient remnants. And lots modern chaos.
What’s your 240-year old upstart country?
USA, specifically Virginia.
If you look at a map, there’s a bump along the east coast of the country. I live about 3km from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, in Virginia Beach.
I once made an Italian curator belly laugh when I explained to her that we Americans consider anything made prior to WW II as an antique. I said this while we were surrounded by 14th century Flemish tapestries.
I like India, but with th Pakistan nuclear testing, and nearby anti-American sentiment, it’s pretty far down my list of places to visit. It is, however, above Chernobyl.
I find it curious that you’d call the US a ’240 year old upstart country’. I’d calculate at least from 1492….. but I suppose you haven’t got much architecture that dates very far back.
I’d have to laugh along with the Italian curator… in my native European city there is this bakery that has existed since 1569 – now that I find impressive whenever I visit and happen to pass by…
Not sure about Pakistan, but I don’t think Indians are any more anti-American than other parts. If you are worried about nuclear radiation though, Japan isn’t the place to go either. It’s been a mess since the earthquake, with things being downplayed our hushed up.
Where I live, I’m about a 30 minute drive to the site of the original Jamestown settlement (first permanent english settlement in North America, circa 1607), but most Americans look at 1776 as the start of our country.
As a whole, we have very few man-made structures that are older than 200 years, unless you count some pre-historical burial mounds and the like.
Oh, wow. How did I miss this?
What alua said is true, they are petty crimes in Kuala Lumpur. I do think that criminals leave foreigners alone though. You just need to avoid alleys and be extra wary of pick-pockets in crowded areas.
Penang is foodie heaven. A local would know where to go, I think.
If you’re interested in culture and history, then why not Malacca or Melaka (in Malay). It’s official national name is Melaka Bandar Bersejarah, which literally means historical city.
Thanks, RtRH. I figured I’d start doing the research now, even though my ultimate destination decision won’t be for a while longer. I’m hoping to get enough information to convince at least one other person to come with me. Most of them want me to get a CAT scan. lol
To coin a phrase from a book: “Most of my friends believe I’m crazy, but then I believe that water is wet, so who am I to judge?”
So, are the sultanate palaces and such now open for tourism?
Spent a couple of days e-roaming and talking to my niece who was there for 8 months. Malacca looks good, although my travel agent needs to do a bit of digging. Definitely one of the places in the running.
And did I read correctly that you got a new king who’s an 84-year soccer fanatic? Fantastic!
Whenever I hear LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know it” i automatically think of Dokko Jin! lol I think the song applies to all those pretty flower boys
Lately I’ve been visiting Soompi and reading gossip about kpop stars that I don’t know. It’s fun and educational. When gossip is out of context, it ends up telling you a lot about the gossiper, not the gossiped about. Anyhoo, there was one today where this group said they wanted to help another idol on his path to recovery. This of course raised my eyebrows, so I read further. Apparently this path to recovery is needed because this guy E-Sens admitted to smoking pot.
So, I’m guessing stunts like this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4b5J-FBpcPc
are not happening on Korean television.
Well, I wouldn’t complain if the boys from Super Junior all had wardrobe malfunctions on stage…hee
Off to play piano for the church Christmas concert, with a burned finger. As usual, I have impeccable timing. I broke both arms when I was 19 two weeks before my college groups tour. THis isn’t quite that bad, and I’m taking a cold wet cloth to put on it when I’m not playing.
Watched 1st ep of Padam, it was awesome!
Watched the last ep (so far) of MOH and actually cheered when someone slapped evil daddy (don’t wanna give too much away, lol)
Everyone, have a great week…
And Ricky, oppa, my hubby says you have great taste in women. :0)
I would like to say the same thing to Mr Shel-Hubby! He married you after all
Ah….you’re a sweetie. Good luck on your papers/exams/finals! Hope to “see” you next week…
Shel – Hope your Christmas concert went well.
Our primary alto got laryngitis 6 days out from ours, and I ended up having to learn all the solo/trio parts from Tuesday to our dress rehearsal on Thursday. The concert went without a hitch on Sunday, thank God.
For the record, I really hate baroque music. Was any of your music that fiendishly complicated?
Yay for good shows! And Baroque music and I have a complicated love/hate relationship.
Love listening to it, hate performing it.
After months working on a project (that I quit anyways) I finally crawl back to dramabeans and find that today’s spotlight post is on a drama called Vampire Prosecutor?
Okay, now I’m convinced that they’re just putting random words into a fish bowl and picking out two at a time, then concocting the story from there.
some dramas definitely seem that way!
And just to stretch your incredulity a little more, the first two episodes of the new zombie series “I’m Alive” are out. Love the name, since, by most definitions, zombies aren’t exactly alive….
@Cabbage~
HAHA, love your reaction– and did you see that there’s another drama called “Vampire Idol”?! “Flower Boy Ramyun Shop” sounded like one of those random-word titles to me at first, but now I’m used to it. However, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get used to the title “Fermentation Family” (which is an upcoming drama).
Welcome back to DB!
JoAnne unni- I forgot to start talking about Ahjussi.
***spoilers********
WOW. It was so fantastic. I know many would say too violent. But that didn’t bother me. I was in tears several times. That little girl was so fabulous.
Won Bin blew my mind. I love some good serious acting. And I love that the Thai guy was just as affected by the girl. Do you think he let himself be beat at the end? Wanting to end his life?
She’s going to be taken care of by the system or by the halabeoji? Of course we all wish it was him, but the ahjussi needs to do a little time, methinks.
