Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

I stumbled upon personal taste about 2 years ago, which led to a major crush on a lee min ho. Skip to 2 years later, I'm semi-fluent in korean and i cant get enough of k-pop and k-dramas. :)

I would have to say Winter Sonata as well. I watched it probably more than 3 times on video cassette. Thinking back, I dunno how I watched it some many times with all the crying, possible incest, and terminal illness stuff going on. I admit, I cannot make myself go back to watching it again. But it was the drama that pulled me further into my addiction. At this point, there's no turning back! lol Oh yeah, I still love the soundtrack for Winter Sonata!

I remember I watched my first drama in 8th grade and it was Soulmate. I first liked anime and watch it in crunchyroll and there was a section called "dramas" and told myself -what is this?- then clicked it and discovered a whole new world!!! I totally fell in love with Soulmate and the OST, after that I remember watching dramas non-stop and one thing led to another, and here I am now (:

My first k-drama was Autumn in My Heart. I've seen a couple of k-dramas before but what really got me addicted was Boys Over Flowers mainly because of soeulmates. I will always ship them. Also, at the same time I found your blog. Reading the recaps is always a pleasure . Thank you!

My first k-drama was Lovers in Paris. The one that got me crazy-hooked was You're Beautiful/He's Bautiful. I watched it for the nth time. I even videod it in my cellphone so that I could watch even at work. Since then, whenever I watch a new series I would watch it at least 3 times, then I have to find a new series just to get over the last one. I bought myself an android/Tab (with 16GB SD) just so I could save video files on my phone and watch anywhere.

My first drama was My Sassy Girl Chun-hyang. I was a sucker for rom-coms, you see. But what made me pledge myself to the dark side was Endless Love: Autumn in my Heart. It's not a rom-com but it just touched my whole being. It was my First Love. :D After watching it, I became a KDrama addict. Kdramas became my companion, and comforter, and it's already been 5 years since that time :D

Happy Anniversary Dramabeans! You Rock! Thanks for your posts. I really love this site <3

The first drama I watched IN FULL was Dae Jang Geum/ Jewel in the Palace back in 2005. It was very memorable since for the very first time, I was hooked into an Asian drama which did not only entice me with its colorful and dynamic history and culture, but captured both my mind and heart. I did not really fall in love with the actors first. It was the story and the many lines that inspired me that made me love it. Since then, I've been watching, reviewing and sharing about Korean dramas. Few years after that, reading dramabeans has been part of my daily routine :)

Stairway to Heaven. Looking back on it, this drama was probably the one that created the "childhood romance/cancer/awk feelings for siblings" stereotype of kdrams. At the time, I was probably 14 and right when I saw Baek Seunghyun, I knew I was literally in love. I cried, I got angry at the mom and sister, and aww-ed appropriately throughout the drama.

To this day, my brother and I reference Tae-hwa's pauper like wardrobe and Kwon Sangwoo's famous "Jungsuh!" every few episodes.

I don't regret it for a minute and I will probably re-watch it again sometime soon. It's a guilty pleasure!

Korean drama? The one that brought me over to the dark side was a Taiwanese drama called Princes Turns to Frog. But for K-drama, I think my first drama was Stairway to Heaven. :] Before I found out that 90% of kdramas have cancerous patients! :[[

I love Winter Sonata: I absolutely loved Bae Young Jun! The setting was in the winter time with wonderful music. I was a kid when I first watched it too! It was one of the first dramas I watched and really cried too; I totally love it's story line. *sigh, true lovers will cross paths with each other again.

my 1st love is Autumn in my heart. (my first Korean Drama also). I would love to watch it over and over again but I don't have a copy. I was a high school student when I watched this. It was a bittersweet feeling!

After this, I become a nutcase for k-dramaland! :D

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on turning 5! :)

Secondly, My Drama First Love would have to be Princess Hours/Goong. Now keep in mind that it was the first EVER Korean Drama I've ever seen and I got hooked. Real bad. I guess the drama made me open to the Korean culture and the little things that make Korean Dramas so captivating to watch and so different from Western TV shows I've seen in my life.

I'm completely unashamed (okay maybe just a little bit) to admit that Boys Over Flowers brought me over to the dark side. Don't regret it one bit though! Before K-dramas, I was a super obsessive American TV junkie, and when all my favourite TV shows went on mid-break hiatus, I thought I'd give this show that I'd been hearing a lot about a try, and I was hooked! That was, of course, how I came upon Dramabeans in the first place too.

BOF is really the kind of show where when you're watching you're like, "This is the greatest piece of art ever made," and when all the hype dies down and you can objectively rate the show, you realise it really wasn't that great. But I immensely enjoyed the rollercoaster ride and I'm so glad it introduced to even better dramas.

My first sniff of k-drama crack was with Lee Seung-gi in "Brilliant Legacy". My mom introduced me and since then, I've been in constant need of k-drama fixes. My family doesn't understand my addiction and I proudly defend anything dealing with Korean Entertainment. My life has never been the same! *^_^v

Thank you dramabeans family for all the time and effort you put into this website. Wishing nothing but the best for y'all in 2012! Happy New Year!

My first K drama was lee min ho and Son Ye Jin in Personal Preference. i watched all sixteen episodes in two days, did no homework or studying and could only marvel at the all the prettiness. Being new to k dramas was exciting and i thought i had stumbled onto something quite refreshing with the subject matter of homosexuality and what not. Now 2 years into Kdrama and insomnia ie watching dramas till 4, 5 in the morning is the normal routine.!!!

Now I'm feeling really, really old... because the first Kdrama that I fell for, hook, line, and sinker was a daily melo called YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF. I was dallying back then, spending more of my time watching telenovelas to practice my Spanish skills and YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF was a lot like those old novelas. I loved Lee Tae-ran in it especially, and how decent she was without being overly sappy. But as far as realizing the true dark side of Kdramas (and by this you must know that I mean total and complete obsession over the gorgeousness that is the male spectrum in Korea), I fell for COFFEE PRINCE and Gong Yoo and The Voice like thousands of others!

Princess hours/ Goong! This totally got me. Back then i would have to search the web high and low to find episodes. i also frequented youtube to watch all the fanmade vids too! What made it worse was that my internet speed at the time wasn't so great. I WAITED for the vids to load. i was a goner. ;p

love ya'll!

Without a doubt, Neugeem (aka Feelings). I still remember clearly the first scene with Lee Jung Jae riding a motorcycle down the streets of Seoul, with jeans and matching jean jacket and RayBans. After that first video, it was all over. I think I watched 4 videos in a row that night.

The first kdrama I ever watched was Phoenix (2004), which starred the late Lee Eun Joo opposite Lee Seo Jin with Jung Hye Young and Eric as the second leads. I watched it on cable tv (in the US, nonetheless) and it intrigued me enough to keep an eye out for kdramas.

I had many first drama like after Phoenix (18 vs 29, Delightful Girl Choon Hyang, My Girl) But my very first drama love would have to be Goong/ Princess Hours.

One is not enough, let's go for two!

Autumn in my heart probably changed my life forever. It was such awesome drama that my mother let me watch even it was on school days. I have strict parents so yeah, BIG deal. WonBin was probably my first ever crush, and autumn became my favorite season.

Coffee prince was the first drama I watched that isn't being dubbed and watched as soon it was subbed. It was a fun ride waiting for new episode every week. It almost ruin my life..lol I was supposed to be studying for a major exam..I passed it anyway!

the drama that started it all: goong. but it was a combination of my girl/coffee prince that really jump-started the whole kdrama addiction for me.

but if we're talking about dramas as a whole, its the infamous hana yori dango (makes me cry tears of blood over the korean adaptation) that really got me into asian dramas.

Goong! Found totally by accident while surfing to find out what 'Crunchy Roll' was in an article I had read. I was smitten in about 5 minutes - and about 10 minutes after that, I was looking up hamnida and saranghae; 15 minutes in and I was on Youtube looking for the music, 30 minutes in and I had found DramaFever (easier to watch, plus I saw it referenced on my Hulu account), and then you guys, who have certainly enriched my life in ways I can't begin to count. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your commitment and intelligence and humor - I might have only been here for the past 6 months, but I will be here for the next 5 years, and however long after that. Kumayo!

Congratulations on your 5th anniversary! :)

Boys Before Flowers was the drama that kick-started my K-drama addiction. My friend lent me the DVD and kept telling me about how absolutely wonderful it was and how good-looking the guys were. I started Episode 1 with no clue what was going on, but the next thing I knew, I fell in love. With Kim Bum, that is. I continued to watch only for him, but then I grew addicted to the nonsensical plot of BBF. (I'm pretty embarrassed now by how much I fan-girled over BBF.) Once I finished the last episode, Google provided me with an extensive list of even more dramas to watch and now here I am, three years into my addiction with no regrets.

GOONG!

It was the year I suddenly started having interest in boys *erhem* and then BAM! Our broadcasting channel started showing Goong, and then I was bought over by the romance and hotttt kisses *rawr*. Yeah, I was sure that flipped on a GOTTA SNAG 'EM ALL switch in me and ever since, I have turned to the irrevocably addicting dark side of kdramas. And hot korean male leads. And their irresistible lips.

Like half the people who posted, Boys Over Flowers. I actually watched the parody that Big Bang did first, and I just had to watch the drama after that. I think I sat in front of my computer for a whole day, just taking in each ten-minute-long clip like my life depended on it. Boys Over Flowers was the first Korean drama I ever watched, and it'll always be my feel-good drama--the drama that I'll rewatch when I'm lonely and single (which is almost always) or just in need of a good laugh. It's a ridiculous drama, and yes, it may be waaaay too overrated, but it'll always have a special place in my drama-loving heart. :P

I would have to say that my first love - as in pulled an all night-marathon, couldn't stop, loved it, cried over it true love - was My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. It was technically the second one I watched, but since my first one was Lie to Me, I felt no pangs about cheating on it halfway through with Lee Seung-Gi and the Hong Sisters.

Oddly enough, the first K-drama that hooked me was Winter Sonata. When I think of it now it makes me cringe but back then I thought it was all that and a bag o' chips. I first watched it when it aired with subtitles back in 2002, I think. It was one of the few shows that I could watch with my whole family, because my grandma only speaks Korean and I can't understand the language. The main reason I watched it, though, was because at the time I was only in the second grade the ridiculous plot didn't bother me in the least; all that mattered was that the main couple find their true love.
Since then, though, I've taken to a number of other shows. The amount of time I have spent on Korean dramas is ridiculous lol :D
