girlfriday: And the birthday bash continues!

javabeans: As promised, we’re kicking off a new round of prizes, so if you didn’t win this time, you’ve got a brand new chance to try. Just please don’t break our site.

girlfriday: It’s a good thing we’re only doing this for one month, because if the prizes get bigger and bigger each time, we’d be giving away cars and spaceships, and before we know it, we’d have to close up shop.

girlfriday: Spaceships are a pain to get licensed for anyway. Thanks to everyone for your birthday wishes and anniversary cheer! Without further ado, drumroll please…

Stop watching tv, or in general, no more American reality shows, and series. They don't appeal to me anymore. That's when I know that I'm totally addicted to kdrama, kvariety, and kpop. It's quiet scary o.O

When I was younger, I did everything that was trendy in the name of K-dramas. They mostly had something to do with my hair: perms, bleaching (yellow streaks), FinKl-like bangs (aka, one long strand of hair sticking out at the front while the rest of my head is slicked back), corn..rows (I am Korean).
Good ol' 90s.

I use a lot of Korean expressions like Aigoo, aish!, etc. I eat a lot of Korean foods, galbi, kimchi, you name it I ate it! It's a part of my routine. I feel incomplete without watching a drama for the whole week or even day. It's practically shaped my entire way of thinking and life in some way. My sister too is an addict. ^_^

Like every kid learning any new language I learn how to swear in korean then learned the rest of the language and now tell my friends to call me unni. When I'm angry I start out yell in English but end up yelling in Korean.

Starting to watch kdramas (and this site) got me through some rough times during my last year and a half of grad school. For whatever reason it also rekindled my love of Japanese TV, which is weird but... whatever.

Biggest thing, though, is that it got me to start applying to teach English abroad (just finished my degree in December, and therefore can come out of lurkdom). Not sure whether I'll end up teaching in Japan or Korea, but either way will be awesome, right? Summer 2012 will be awesome.

Kdramas have changed my life in that they got me interested in the Korean language, then manhwa and kpop. I use it to address some of my friends and shout angrily, too! Haha Also, it got me to try kimbap the first time I saw it, though I'm not sure I'll jump at the chance to try kimchi yet....it looks so spicy!

Hi,
I use the word "aigoo" in my everyday life. I tend to utter it when I mess up. And I mess up a loooot. One the bright side, I have made quite a few heads turn :)
I enjoy the puzzled looks I get followed by 'wtf was that?'

My new thing is that I tried kimchi. And.... it was gross.
I should have realized it was going to be a dicey taste test when the label on the jar warned that it needed to be opened over a sink and to watch out for internal gas pressure (the jar's, not mine...) shooting the lid up.

I have accidentally blurted out korean phrases to family and friends. oopsie, side effect of watching too much k-drama? i also make kimchi on a regular basis which my 2 yr old also loves to death. we have also been dancing to k-pop since before he was born. sure my family thinks im a bit strange but i don't mind. actually i think watching k-dramas has made me more caring/family oriented than before.

I hadn't listened to much k-pop before I started watching k-dramas, just sort of the average amount that had filtered through, but I started listening to more.

So my main ringtone on my phone is SHINee's Ring Ding Dong - because that's just funny. I'm the one who put that one there. However, I foolishly taught my nieces how to cut their own ringtones and how to program their phones, and so one day, while niece2 and I were out, suddenly my totebag started playing "Almost Paradise" - niece2 and I looked at each other in horror and dove for the bag. Turns out niece1 had reprogrammed my phone so that my sister's ringtone on my phone was Almost Paradise. Of course, the most ridiculous part about that was that the chances of anyone within hearing distance knowing that song and why we were freaking out was nil, but she got us on that one, after we got over the shock, my sister couldn't figure out why my niece and I were laughing so hard we could barely talk to her!

tl;dr - reprogrammed phone with k-pop ringtones.

I've fallen in love with Korea-the people, the land, the language and...ramen. Yes, I sit in front of my laptop watching Kdramas with a big bowl of ramen slurping away, chopsticks in hand. My husband and children stare at me while I defend the noise I'm making as being culturally appropriate. Hah.

On a more serious note, today I watched two documentaries on North Korea...seriously broke me apart.

I've learned Korean by watching dramas. Also, ever since that scene in MNIKSS, whenever I go on a late night binge by myself after dieting during the day, I do it SamSoon-style with bibimbop made with all the banchan in the fridge, lots of gochujjang and sesame oil, and a cold refreshing bottle of soju. Then, I wait for Hyun Bin to call.

Also, I become obsessed with learning the language and have a strong to desire to visit Korea someday. My ipod is filled with K-pop and osts from the dramas.

After being exposed to K-dramas and K-entertainment in general, I have been done a lot of things that I would not have done. I have made Korean friends, trying to study the language itself, eat Korean food at least 2x a month, trying Soju (which I can't get back to it anymore), eat kimchi with ramyun..almost every time, bought Korean brand clothing through online shopping.

My friends and I are planning a trip to visit S. Korea this summer.

Hello Javabeans and Girlfriday,

These questions are a lot of fun and I really enjoying reading all the responses from your amazing readers.

When I first started watching Kdramas back in 2005 I still lived in Santa Monica, CA so my earliest foray into the world I had only seen on the screen came from my first visit to a Jjimjilbang in Koreatown. it became a regular thing with my best friend (the one who turned me on to Kdramas in the first place). Every couple of months we would go to the Jjimjilbang and get the life scrubbed out of us and then we would hit a Korean BBQ and gorge - It was heaven! Sadly I moved to Seattle in 2007 and though I still go to a Jjimjilbang nearby I fly solo.

My second life change brought on by watching SO many kdramas was that I began to really notice Korean men. It is not like I hadn't seen them before but I admit I saw them differently from that point on. Since I was already a happily married woman (and mom) when I started watching Kdramas it means I will never get to fulfill that little part of me that would like to have a tryst with someone that looks exactly like Hyun Bin. Luckily my husband looks like a Canadian/Ukrainian version of Yoon Kye Sang so I am good!

Thanks for the fun.

Amy

Watching Korean dramas has definitely introduced me to the awesomeness that is Korea. Like most people, I started learning Korean. Also, I'm a foodie so I have become obsessed with Korean cuisine. I am constantly finding recipes and watching various programs that highlight Korean food ( I highly recommend Kimchi Chronicles-I want to go to Korea and eat at every single place featured on that show). Besides learning everything I can on Korean culture and entertainment, I have become addicted to Makgeolli. :)

Because of K-dramas, I've started learning Korean, and I had something to bond over my Korean friends with hahaha. No joke though, I met a lot of my Korean friends (and one of my bestest friends<3) through K-pop and K-dramas.
Learning Korean started about two years ago, when I was thinking about how cool it would be to actually understand Korean and not need subtitles (like I can do with tw dramas) and I was like "I'M GOING TO LEARN KOREAN." I'm still not fluent but I haven't really been learning actively haha but I'm happy to say that I can understand about 30% of typical drama language and it's really useful now because I can understand what my Korean friends are saying (still can't read and write though T___T) and I can multi-task while watching dramas (not that I really need to because I'm so focused on all the pretty)~

Let's see, where to start. Well, first of all, I started saying yah! OMO! and isshhhh a lot. My sisters look at me like I'm crazy whenever I do it. LOL. I also started eating better. Like, healthier. Looking at all the pretty girls in the kdrama world made me want to work on myself more. They all eat so healthy. Except for the characters that have weird eating quirks. Oh, and when ever some thing goes wrong and I have no idea what to do, I say "eotteokhae". LOL...

Watching Korean dramas has changed my life in so many ways I can't count. The first drama I watched (Attic Cat) was almost 8 years ago.

In these 8 eight years, I have:
- Fallen in love with Gong Yoo
- Studied abroad in Korea
- Taught myself Korean (by watching kdramas/x-man/singing kpop)
- Lived/Worked in Korea for 2 years
- Cooked Korean food
- Endured my dad complaining about the kimchi smell in the fridge
- 친구들이 한테 계속 한국어를 쓰고....그만하라고 할 때 무시하고...
- Drank makgeolli alone while watching High Kick 3
- Applied to be a Korean-English translator at DramaFever
- Now working as a Kor-Eng translator for DramaFever

I've taken a lot from these 8 years and I've learned so much about an entirely different language and culture than my own. I anticipate that the years to come will be filled with KDRAMA goodness ^^

- learned how to make some Korean food: Kimchi Fried Rice, Dobboki, and Kimchi stew.
- changed my message ringtone to Ra Im's 'munja wa shong', when 'Secret Garden' was airing. :D
- watched videos to learn how to put on make up like the Korean celebrities.

Since I fell in love with Korean dramas, I began to fall in love with its culture & foods too.

I would insert a few Korean words I know in my conversations with my friends. I shamelessly try to befriend Koreans hehe.

I forced myself to enjoy ddukbokki even though if I am being honest with myself, I don't really like it. I tried multiple times and still don't care for the rice cakes in ddukbokki. But I wanted to love it so much...

I flew to Korea from the U.S. hoping to be able to meet celebrities. No luck on my side.

I stopped watching American TV series.

I tried to self learn the language but I gave up. Hangul is too hard.

I had never fangirled a celebrity in my life until I met my Korean idol. hehe. She's still my idol after 6 years. No one can replace her.

I forced my Caucasian husband to eat my Korean cooking hehehe.. he didn't like some of them but I just blamed the dish, as supposed to my cooking. I would say "yeah..that's the taste of Korean dishes" hahaha

I replaced my plastic chopsticks with aluminum/metal chopsticks

I listen to Korean pop songs and drama OST.

I hid my obsession with Korean pop culture from my family . hehe

I confessed my obsession with watching Kdramas to my church friends during a women's retreat.

I tried to stop multiple times but always got sucked right back in

I cried my eyes out after watching a sad Korean drama then when a friend asked what happen to my eyes, I blamed it on the seasonal allergy.

wow..I just realized how much Korean customs are part of my life now. pretty crazy stuff.

Since i started watching Korean dramas, my grades have been slowly slipping. Right now, i have major senioritis, because once i come home, i start watching dramas. My mom gets mad at me but once she watches it with me, she forgets about why she's mad.

I also started making some Korean food like kimchi but i can't eat most of the other foods because im vegetarian.

Since i live in an area with many asian people, i find myself eavesdropping on Korean people's conversation just to see if i can understand. unfortunately, i have overestimated my abilities many times and im usually filled with disappointment later. Luckily for me, there are many people to help me understand Korean. Im a senior in high school, and really want to go UCLA and UCI just so I can learn Korean.

I even got my sister hooked on korean dramas and she's only 10 years old.
So basically, im ruined for the rest of my life!

Korean dramas have made me realize that my korean heritage isn't something to be ashamed of. And it's definitely made a positive impact on my relationship with my parents.

As a first generation Korean-American I've always felt somewhat ashamed of my parents lack of fluency with American culture. But watching korean dramas and variety shows with the help of recaps by the Dramabeans staff (thank you, thank you!)has allowed me to appreciate some of the most compelling, hilarious and heart-wrenching characters I would never have known otherwise. Never mind learning about korean history and values.

oh korean dramas, what have you done to me.
1) you made me find korean men attractive or asian men in general (kang ji hwan, kim bum, JGS, and Song Seung Hyeong, you are responsible for this).
2) you have made me enjoy korean music through OSTs and I use it to torture family members who stand hearing music they dont understand.
3) you gave me the platform to asianize my family by slowly getting them to watch korean dramas and we end up using korean words as part of our everyday language.
korean dramas, you have done these things to me, yet I love thee so much.

1) Watching kdramas have made me discover(rather recently) the wonderful world of Korean cuisine. I now look for new Korean restaurants within a reasonable driving distance to go try with my wife(and girls if they're available). I LOVE soondubu jjigae!

2) Kdrama OST music has now become the music genre that I listen to more often than anything else. It occupies a considerable amount of "space" on my iPod Touch and iPhone 4S.

3) Almost embarrassed to say, but...I recently downloaded Secret Garden character Gil Ra-im's incoming text alert onto my iTunes, then converted it to usable format to download onto my iPhone. I still haven't figured out how to convert it(currently on phone as ringtone custom selection) to sms text alert...working on it. lol
