Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #2

girlfriday: And the birthday bash continues!

javabeans: As promised, we’re kicking off a new round of prizes, so if you didn’t win this time, you’ve got a brand new chance to try. Just please don’t break our site.

girlfriday: Yeah, who knew free stuff would bring this many people out of the woodwork?

javabeans: I know everyone likes free gifts, but it was surprising to see how much delurking resulted. Hello, lurkers! Say more stuff!

girlfriday: It’s a good thing we’re only doing this for one month, because if the prizes get bigger and bigger each time, we’d be giving away cars and spaceships, and before we know it, we’d have to close up shop.

javabeans: Wait, you’ll give them ideas! To clarify: We are NOT giving away cars. Or spaceships. Those are exclusively for personal use.

girlfriday: Spaceships are a pain to get licensed for anyway. Thanks to everyone for your birthday wishes and anniversary cheer! Without further ado, drumroll please…

How has watching korean dramas changed my life? Let's see.. it absolutely transformed my life haha.. If it was not for korean dramas! I might not have my dark circles and I may have gone out more haha. Basically, ever since I was introduced to kdramas, I have been obsessed with them and it has been about 12 years ever since I watched my first kdrama. Because of kdramas I began to gain interest towards the korean language and their ost music... if it was not for kdramas, I would not have found out that kpop exists and shoooooot! That would really suck because i only listen to kpop nowadays haha.. anyways, that may be only one change in my life that it did but it was a major and drastic one. <3 I just simply love how it is able to relate so much to me sometimes.

I started making my own kimchi. Not very well, but it's better than what's at the store in my area. Now I just have to find a group of smokin' hot misfit guys to help me out...

Because of kdramas I have really annoyed my family by forcing them to watch shows and listen to kpop. I find myself speaking a little korean picked up from shows and finding that people don't understand when I yell "Yah" at them on the subway.

Kdramas have also made me completely unrealistic in my optimism because I kind of see Seoul as Coincidence City and figure that the first person I get in an argument with I will most likely end up getting together with, breaking up, finding out a birth secret, then marrying in the end. So fingers-crossed ;)

I started learning Korean at school and have now completed 3 years of Korean classes. For finals, one of our options was to write and star in our own K-Drama which I did with several friends. We totally ruined Boys over Flowers but hey it was fun. Oh and I joined a dance group and danced Shinee's Lucifer in front of hundreds of people at our dance showcase...though that reflects more on my overall obsession with K-pop than dramas specifically

Ever since I started watching korean dramas, I've felt drawn to the culture and the people. Everytime I find a drama that I like, I will look up the biographies of the actors and actresses in that drama. Then I'll do a search on soompi.com to find the latest news on those actors and actresses. I will also watch the dramas that were done by those actors and actresses. One of the recent kdramas that I've finished is Protect the Boss. Once I found out that one of the actors (Jaejoong) is a singer, I went on youtube to hear him sing.

I'm also a devoted fan of korean bbq with banchan. I freaking love korean bbq - bulgogi and kalbi, I heart you! But I don't know if I'll try soju since I'm such a lightweight. If I ever get the chance to visit Korea, I want to sit down in one of those large tents you see along the streets and eat to my hearts' content!

I've also tried using the words that I've learned in my kdramas with my korean friends. I call my co-worker/mentor oppa and his wife unni. Whenever I have the chance to chat with him, I'll ask him questions to further my understanding and appreciation of the korean culture. Hopefully, in the future, I will have an opportunity to learn hanguel.

I would say korean dramas helped me learn more about the korean culture. I was able to learn the language, see what they where in different time periods depending if it was a historical or futuristic drama. In addition, I was introduced to their music~ as well as a variety of foods. (:

New things that I did do to watching k-dramas
I have stay up late waiting for the latest episode to be posted online.
I was able to learn some korean phrases from watching too many k-dramas.
I have on my Nook reader the songs from my favorite k-dramas.
I was able to find this great blog were I can read about the latest about my favorite k-drama artists.
It introduce me to the 16 episode format. Before I used to watch dramas that would last like 200 episodes and even though nothing occurred in the story I swallow episode after episode. With the 16 episode dramas I learned that wonderful stories could be told.
I became picky when it came to choosing what drama I am going to watch next.
I found my favorite k-drama. My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. For this show I stayed up many nights surfing the net just to find anything and reading any articles and videos on the show. It was worth it.
Finally it made me find others who also enjoyed watching k dramas and it was nice to know that I was not the only one.

Let me see, I started to watch Korean drama when one of my friend suggested Autumn's Sonata and how much it made her cried. Well the drama's sob fest scared me of ever watching Korean drama again until I finished school, so bored I watched East of Eden (I know!!! but I have a thing for SSH :p) even though that drama sucked I got hooked and from then on, 1N2D replaced my regular Saturday Night Live, Friends turned into High Kick thru the Roof, I became a Korean food expert (ask me how to make 순두부 찌개 ^^), drink expert (soju jelly shot anyone??). I eat, drink, watch, and even my toilet is the one they use in Korea >_<. Yup, that's it.

Since watching kdramas I've started coming up with elaborate kdrama plots for various friends. A friend and I have even started a Google doc to jot down all the random drama scenarios we think up. My kpop collection has significantly increased and I've learned random phrases in Korean like harabeoji. Giving the gift of a piggy bunny for a friend's birthday party and encouraging friends with shouts of "Fighting!" Wanting to go visit the 63 Building while I was in Seoul (unfortunately didn't get to it due to time constraints...next time!). And blessing army duty, haha.

1) Makgeoli has become my drink of choice.

2) I now hesitate before rejecting the earnest advances of younger, prettier men.

3) Hitting up a spa in K-town now seems like a reasonably affordable alternative to a motel when turned out in the cold by roommates.

4) When I have a fight with my sister, I now suspect that there is a hidden birth secret that will prove once and for all that we are not, in fact, blood-related.

5) There is no such thing as a dead-end job: just another Cinderealla-esque opportunity of hitting the lottery -- assuming that a young and talented chaebol will eventaully assume the throne at the helm of said company and attempt to annoy you into falling for his obnoxiously charming advances.

Being a fan of Kdrama made me curious about all things related to Korea.
- I love Korean food especially Kimchi Jigae and galbi.
- I started my own blog one year ago, recapping my favourite Kdramas.
- Watching sageuk made me googling all about Korean history.
- Everyday I open soompi, dramabeans and many of Kdramas blog to find latest news about Kdramas. I do the same on twitter and happily share the news with my friends.
- now I've started a business selling import Korean accesories.

Kdramas changed my life indeed^^

I've learned some Korean words, sometimes downloading OST of dramas and singing along with the lyrics though I don't know much about it. I keep on suggesting my friends to watch "this" and "that" and keep on talking about Korean dramas with my k-drama friends. I love kimchi since day one and I'm sometimes craving for it. I get some mannerism from Korean dramas and it's really driving me nuts!

When it's vacation, I never fail to watch Korean Dramas (again and again and again.) I also keep on stalking the Korean actors or actress of the dramas I watched in internet. I gather information or trivia about them.

I wore a full bangs once and I looked a little bit of Korean. Some Koreans thought I was Korean at first glance. I interact with Koreans also and ask them about their favorite dramas, movies or actors and actress.

Right now, I'm seriously considering of going to Korea for a short vacation since a Korean friend offered free lodging.

and the craziest thing is that I keep on falling in love with these fictional character! Should I worry about my future? I might end up being an old maid! No more interest with guys in real world!

the changes are involuntary and personal.
I am estonian. We don´t have emotions.
No, just kidding. We do have anger, greed, jealousy and such. Even if we are trying to show positive emotions it comes off as grinning someone to death. Only old ladies show their emotions - and you´d have to be half-russian.
I have always been off from that pattern myself though. Everyone glares at my outbursts of tears and laughter - in a university lecture. Or bookgasms in a library (falling down on the floor, jabbering).
Now in the dramas, the emotions float on the very surface. and the way they are expressed easily sticks with you. I love how open and invested korean actors are, and how much their whole body is taken over by the character.
If possible at all, I have adopted even quirkier, stronger facial expressions and phrases half-involuntarily from these dramas. It is a dangerous path, and I don´t want to become a caricature, so being aware to the change now, I take some control and dont let my behaviour become clownish. Still, I have no problem with expressing myself, even if I get stared at like a loony.
Oh, and one more thing: I have read a bit about the Korean culture and social behaviour, and I especially like the notion of it being a "culture of affection", where caring for one another and showing your concern, respect and love through small everyday actions is a center of everything. In a country where people have family dinners once a year - at christmas - seeing almost every single drama presenting us with scenes of sitting together behind a table and sharing food, and how significant moments are born from eating together, it is reassuring. If only I had shared moments like this with family and friends... most of them working abroad, minding their own, it is neigh impossible. Oh well. I´ll imagine I am one of those characters, and that the others behind the table in some scene are my family members. a Fantasy-dinner. I´ll make it real.

Oh, let me count the ways, should i?
1. Went to Korea twice already -- and everything i knew, i learned from watching hundreds of Kdramas. My friends were amazed. Seriously.

2 Enrolled myself in hangeul class and what can i say? 한국어 = 정말 초와!!!

3. My TV is permanently tuned in to KBS world. American shows? What's that?!

4.My phone & laptop only play korean songs - from Im Jae Bum's 고해 to Super Junior's Mr Simple, i listen to them all day long. Even my 4yo niece sings along to 이 승기's Losing My Head (and yes, it was me who taught her the lyrics)

5. I now do noraebang, eat samgyeopsal (kimchi is a given), and cuss in Hangeul like some bonafide korean.

6. I'm aiming for the South Korean post in 3 yrs (yes, diplomats like me do have our guilty pleasures ;P)

7. The only entertainment news sites that i follow religiously are korean ones. No E! News for me.

8. I dont care for our local news. Im much more interested to watch the 9 o'clock news on kbs world.

9. All my dream guys are Koreans. I dont find any other race that appealing anymore!

10. I spent a small fortune on buying my kdrama dvds. Let me put it this way, if i were to add up everything, i could have probably bought a Balenciaga instead.

11. I never leave comments on sites - only here on dramabeans!

Oh, i can probably come up with 10 more but heck, you get my point. Im a kdrama addict & never been happier! ;P

... Too many things have happened to me because of K-Dramas xP

Mainly I've been (very) slowly learning Korean... really because it's just such a pain having to wait for subs :P And I've been using a lot of Korean slang while talking to my friends... only the people who watch dramas too actually know what I mean :(

Uhm... I kind of randomly scream out "PANTYYYYY" every now and then after watching a certain drama which features a very sexy cow. It's almost like I can't control myself and I usually end up embarrassing myself and whoever's around me at that moment -,-

I've also started eating more and more korean food (I actually never used the subway that much before but now because I'm always heading to Korea town I use it like all the time. Parking in K-town is really not fun in my city >.>)

I stopped using foundation and am now using bb cream (though BB cream really is just better quality ^^)

So far for almost every assignment that I've had where it can be applicable I've somehow been able to fit in Korea x3 (I talked about the MC Mong scandal in my current events class) [and it cannot even be explained how angry I was when this guy skipped the line and took the North/South korea topic for out final essay before me -.-)]

I take every chance I get to recommend dramas to my friends to the point where I even mention something that happened in the drama they tell me they don't want to hear about it... not that it really deters me from telling them anyways x3 And for some of the people who actually want to hear me blab about dramas without stopping... I usually end up drawing relationship diagrams for them >.>

There is definitely a korean textbook sitting up on my book shelf.

Also drifted into korean food. To the point the delivery guy from my local korean restaurant knows who I am when I meet him in the lobby of my dorm (he even wished me good luck on finals!). I've also sought out korean friends and their mothers to teach me to cook a few things/ cook things for me. My roommate (who I introduced to kdramas of course) and I do regular trips to H-mart to stock up. And I have to admit I probably only eat shin ramen because of goong.

I break out random korean words all the time to the point aigoo and omo are second nature. My sister responds to unni. My mother responds to umma. The highlight of this was getting my very not korean boyfriend to let me call him oppa (Poor guy doesn't understand why I keep trying to back hug him though...).

And I will confess that I've conned most of my guy friends into carrying me for the sake of getting a piggy back. Even when I'm not the least drunk.

(Delurked just to post this. And I've been reading since coffee prince. Thanks for all the work guys!)

- Ate kimchi and hunted out korean restaurants in our area.
-Tried to cook kimchi pancake but failed at it. Lol. My kimchi fried rice was a hit though!
-Tried learning the language. It's hard. >.<
-Was once very active at the site Viki then known a viikii.
-Stayed up up to 5am jut so that I can help out get the videos subbed. Almost had carpal tunnel syndrome from it!
- Am now a worshiper of bimbimbap and bulgogi.
-Branched out to kpop for a bit. Fell in and out of love. Sadly, it was short voyage. Too much idols sprouting out left and right.
- Planning on going to S. Korea. Now, if only I can stop buying and actually save though. I swear, the SALE sign beckons to me like a mermaid to sailor. LOL

I was never interested in Asian male celebrities due to the fact they look so feminine. And their skin is spotless. It's also the hair. What is up with the hair?! (Oska from Secret Garden?! Lee Min Ho in Boys Over Flowers?! *shivers*).

Now-- I actually appreciate the feminine-ish looks, nicely defined facial structure, beautiful skin... If the hair is too anime-ish, or crazy, it's still hard to get past that though. I never used to drool over any male celebrities but that's changed since I've become addicted to Korean dramas.

I'm definitely more interested in learning Korean as a language because I've watched so many Korean dramas. I can sometimes even pick up random phrases without subtitles, "Wanna die?" "Are you crazy?" "Come on in" "Delicious" "Alright" "Jerk" Totally useful phrases in a real life situation. Haha.

I visit dramabeans obsessively and I've even been keeping track of dramas that I've watched, it's a nice list now and I'm rating them :D

When I entered university, I was focusing on getting a degree so that I could teach in Japan. Since I started watching k-dramas, my focus has switched to Korea. Sadly, my university doesn't have a Korean language class, but I've decided that once I finish the Japanese classes, I'm going to learn Korean on my own. My top Asian country to teach in is now Korea, with Japan in second place.

watching korean dramas make me wanna learn korean language! I have been hanging out a lot with my korean friends. I understand a lot of korean words than I think. Sometime even my korean friends were surprised when I understand what they were talking about. We have korean fellowship at my school and I have been going to that fellowship and learn about korean language and culture. One of my korean friends always host lunch on every Sunday: we cooked korean BBQ, kimchi fried rice, rice cake soup, kimbab.. Visiting to korean one day is one of my life goals to accomplish! :) Thank you Dramabeans!!!

Ever since developing an obsession to K-dramas I've wanted to try everything that K-drama characters get to do, for example:

1. Eat street-vendor food. K-dramas make Ddeokbokki look so good that I had to try it at least once. I ordered a plate at a restaurant, took one bite of the and...omg those tiny rice cakes were too hot to handle for me. But I would definitely eat them again even though they left my mouth on fire.

2. Imitating fashion, hair, and make-up trends. I bring pics of Korean actresses & singers to the salon when I get my haircut. I bought Korean make-up products from Skin 79, Missha, and Etude House. I love the fashion/style of clothing from dramas, so sometimes I try to recreate outfits from dramas. I wore a K-drama inspired outfit to work one day, but realized that I looked pretty dressed up (and really colorful) in a cute, bright floral dress compared to my co-workers...I try to be more subtle in outfit choices now. Hehe.

3. Buying couple items & buying cute accessories for my house, car, and phone. I have cute bento box makers, cell phone charms, and room decos. I love all the plush toys that show up in dramas, so I've tried to buy all the cute character toys. Also, after watching "Boys Before Flowers" I bought a replica of the star-moon necklace that Gu Jun Pyo gave Jan-Di & after watching "You're Beautiful" I bought everything that was Pig-Rabbit related.

I love K-dramas and will continue to pull all-nighters to watch dramas, troll drama sites to wait for new episodes to be subbed, and read blog sites to get my daily fix of everything drama/Korean related. Being a K-drama fan hasn't been all about the dramas, but has now made me more interested in Korean culture (traditional), lifestyle, and entertainment/pop culture!

Oh man, there is SO many things I have tried/changed/become motivated to due since my obsession with dramas (particularly K-Dramas began).

First and foremost there is MAJOR food envy. Every time I watch a K-Drama, all I want to do is eat Korean food. Whether it is ramyun, samgyeopsal, dukbokki, or anything else the characters happen to be eating (even stuff I normally would never IMAGINE eating like grilled intestines or fried chicken's feet...) I find myself drooling over. This has lead to some great experiments in Korean cuisine going down in my kitchen, to say the least. Although, I will forever love kimchi!

Next would be my new-found obsession with plushies. OMG. I.Want.Plushies. Behind every good drama is a good plushie (or plushIES). These cute little stuffed whatevers could be the star of the show (see: You're Beautiful, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, etc...) or simply innocent bystanders in the background that give me major Plushie Envy (Hm. Pretty much every drama out there...). Guess who has taken up a hobby of sewing? THIS FANGIRL!

Third is my current obsession with BB Cream. In fact, most dramas make me want to slather my face with all sorts of stuff I don't normally use (give me some soap and a moisturizer and I'm set)! But lately I've tossed aside my foundation compact for some smooth, good smelling, all around miracle-working BB Cream. Successful product advertising? I should say so. Dramas: 3. Fangirl: 0.

Last but not least is the way dramas (or I guess--more specifically--drama PLOTS) have worked themselves into my everyday life. This one is a bit harder for me to elaborate on...but it's like the time the heal of my shoe got caught in the elevator rut and I went sprawling towards this cute, confused looking guy in the corner and it was as if time froze...I could see the look of confliction on his face (catch her? move out of the way?) and my own impending humiliation but all I could think was 'Does this mean we are fated?' because if it were DramaLand we would somehow coincidentally continue to meet until we bickered ourselves into love and suffered sufficiently enough to earn our happy ending. But see, life is like that for me now. I can't help but dramatize everything.

I can't imagine how dramas will effect my life MORE as time goes by. -twitch-

Back in 1990something when I was young and ignorant, I remember going to a Korean restaurant and ordered Shrimp Fried Rice and watched in horror as my friends enjoyed some kimchi (hangs head in shame). I started watching kdramas about 4 years ago and thus, my ALL THINGS KOREAN obsession started. I am learning hangul and how to speak Korean just so I can understand what I am watching or listening to (recaps are not always on time so, you have to do what you have to do), I go to my favorite Korean restaurant at least once a week (Kimchi and I are well acquainted now, lol), I shop at my favorite Korean market on a weekly basis (especially on Fridays...Kimbap day!!!), I'd learned how to cook several Korean dishes, I have watched several 16 (or more) episodes dramas within a day, when my co-workers stop by my desk the first thing out of their mouths is "Don't tell me that you are reading/watching Korean stuff again" (BTW, my daughters say the same thing at home), I named a bookmark folder in my computer: Korea, I can't stand pop music and yet, I listen to kpop (in the car, computer, phone, nook...), and there are some things that are way to embarrassing to write in here so, I think that I'll go to bed now...

Wowie. Well, watching K-dramas got me into K-fashion. I'd been fringing Japanese fashion trends, but I can never fit into clothes I find in Japan. But Korean fashion trends are more adaptable to other body sizes.
So, I can say that I spent over $100 dollars on a dress for the first time (just so I can do the evening gown / black blazer / boots look from Mary Stayed Out All Night). And I've been looking at a lot more color and indie stuff in my wardrobe.

Oh, and it brought me and my sisters together, whereas before they never understood my love of Asian men.

And it made me a better person. And...And...(what else can I say to get that yesasia prize....)

I started to cook Korean food. I have tried bimbimbap before but now, there more Korean food that I have tried eating. I have checked various Korean food blogs and realized that it was not difficult to cook Korean food. I think Korean food is healthy as it has more vegetables. In addition, I also notice in Korean dramas that Korean loves to eat all kinds of fruits. I like when everyone gathers after meals to eat fruit and talk about family matters.

I prefer to watch Korean drama with English subs. I prefer to listen to Korean language rather than watching Kdrama that has been dubbed in another language. Listening to Korean language gives the drama more emotion and gives the effect that the actors want to project.

I am a resident of US.

I started eating kimchi. At first, I was hesitate. Then, I hated the taste. Gradually, I started loving the taste, and can't live without it. I like to add kimchi and an egg to my Korean noodles. It's just oh-so-yummy!! There are a lot of food I would love to try, but have not come to it. I'm starting to pick up words from the dramas I watch. I started picking up gestures that I didn't know I started picking up. Hahha I just can't get enough of anything Korean.

I think the biggest thing that Korean dramas have given me is the heightened sense of understanding what it means to be a Korean son or daughter, or to be Korean in general. And why they intensely enjoy the drink and satisfaction of having soju.

But most of all, it made me realize how much I crave Korean food (mostly because most dramas have that one obligatory meal scene) I can't say I go every week to eat Korean food, but I definitely have Korean bbq a lot more often than my wallet wants me too.

omg, the food. I had no clue what was in a Korean menu until I started watching kdramas. And now my entire family sees me as the korean food junkie.

Ever since I started watching k-dramas, I have been obsessed with the food. Unfortunately I haven't been able to try out the food but my obsession for bibimbap has grown and meat + lettuce wrap that I always see all look delicious.
I have also caught myself saying words and phrases in Korean and I can understand a bit when I watch k-dramas. I am hoping that by watching these dramas that I slowly start learning the language. OSTs are a huge love for me as a result I have a huge lust of them ^.^
I don't know if this counts but I really really want to be part of production team for k-dramas and k- varieties. I was never really this curios but I would like to see everything take place
Oh and I badly want to dress in a hanbok(?). I need friends who can hook me up ^.^
