Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #3

girlfriday: Week three of the blazin’ birthday giveaway extravaganza extraordinaire!

javabeans: You know what that means: More presents! Man, what a spoiled 5-year-old Dramabeans is.

girlfriday: Right? If DB were a kid, we’d have one needy brat on our hands.

javabeans: Then again, most 5-year-olds receive presents, and DB’s giving ‘em out. Although I don’t know who gave that kid my credit card info.

girlfriday: Is that what’s going on? That explains a lot. This time we’re giving away a brand new iPod nano, but that’s not the best part. It’s chock full o’ goodies! It’s got a Javabeans Playlist on it, which I’m gonna venture to say is worth more than the player itself.

javabeans: We’ve also got a few more premium memberships to give out to Dramafever, in case you want to get friends/siblings/parents addicted to your drama poison of choice. Because as we know, drama addictions are best shared, not cured.

girlfriday: Yeah, rehab’s for quitters, and we’re no quitters!

javabeans: So get crackin’! By which we mean, please post up lots of nice thoughts for our many many guest posters over the years.

girlfriday: They know how much we appreciate them, but as we know from personal experience, sometimes the warmest thanks comes straight from you guys, so please be generous with the love!

And the winners of Giveaway #2 are…

  • Bethany, winner of a one-year premium subscription to Dramafever,
  • PrincessSerenity81, winner of a one-year drama membership to Crunchyroll,
  • and Bluefyre, winner of one $100 gift certificate to Yesasia.

Congratulations! We’ll be contacting you shortly via email. On to the next one!

Giveaway #3

Question: Actually it’s not a question this time, but a prompt: Thank a guest blogger, any guest blogger. That can mean any of our current contributors (i.e., gummimochi, kaedejun, HeadsNo2) or anybody who’s ever written a guest post on Dramabeans in the past. (*Don’t forget to use a valid email address, and please indicate at the bottom of your comment if you are NOT a resident of US/Canada.)

Prizes:

  • 1-year premium membership at DramaFever (US/Canada residents only)
  • another 1-year premium membership at DramaFever (US/Canada residents only)
  • an iPod nano (maybe with some stuff on it, wink-wink).

DramaFever offers free legally-licensed dramas and movies with high-quality English subtitles. With a premium membership you can watch unlimited, commercial-free, and enjoy extra content as well as unlimited mobile device access and high-definition. Check out recently added titles here.

Winners announced: Sunday, January 22, at 8pm, Pacific Standard Time*

*Or, 10pm in Mexico City, 11pm in NYC, 1am in Buenos Aires, 4am in London, 5am in Paris, noon in Singapore and Manila, 1pm in Seoul and Tokyo, or 3pm in Sydney and Vladivostok. Okay, you get the point. (You can refer to this handy Time and Date converter to find out what this is in your time zone.)

Thank you, kaedejun! Checking for You've Fallen for Me updates was a regular and enjoyable part of my weekly schedule :) I look forward to following your posts again.

Also want to thank Skimmy and Andromytta for picking up some of those Pasta episodes. I watched that show about a year after it came out, so there was no one to talk to about it, haha. The recaps were an enjoyable part of the viewing experience-- it's neat to see what other people thought about the episodes I watched.

On that note - thank you all guest bloggers, regular bloggers, everyone. You make this such a fun site!

Too be honest, I can't choose just one person to thank. I thank everyone on dramabeans for their hard work. I found this site by searching the web for drama recaps. I found this site and realized how wonderful it was. All the blogs that are one here inspired me to create my own blog for dramas. I really thank you guys for everything! Thank you guys for creating this wonderful website that has become one of my favorites :] I go on this website at least once a day not knowing when something new would come up. I'm always really excited for the year-end-reviews because they always give me a good laugh and they help me choose another drama that i might start. I'm really happy that i can come on this site and read all the wonderful reviews and recaps. The recaps are always so nice :] Once again, thank you all for everything, all the recaps, ratings, laughs :] Thank You Guys So Much !

Thank you, HeadsNo. 2, for your wonderful Tree with Deep Roots recaps. They were so detailed, and evocative, I could almost imagine watching the drama unfold before my eyes :)

Actually, my grateful thanks to all of you who recap and post regularly. I can't access many of the sites which stream dramas - or they are really, really slow - so your recaps are a godsend! After having read the recaps for so many amazing kdramas here, I'm just waiting and praying that they'll be available on DVD soon. With English subs.

Just a thought - have you guys ever considered publishing your recaps, like a 'Best of 2011 Kdrama Recaps' series? I'd go for that! I know we can always read the recaps here, but it would be mighty handy to have a copy in hand (no pun intended), and to be able to read/ recall favourite moments wihout the tv/ other devices. And your recaps are so good, they are like novelisations of the dramas!

Once again, thank you, all of you, for your hard work and generosity in sharing that sweat and effort with us!

I would like to say a special thanks for HeadsNo2. Your recaps for TWDR, Salaryman and the halftime report on Padam Padam has probably made you my fav recapper on DB.
Not only do I love your writing style (it reads so easy and effortless and I love how you blend your wit and opinion within the recap of the story), you have also recapped all the best dramas that have been showing recently. All 3 of the dramas you covered have been my top fav kdramas this past year mainly because they're so different from the standard kdrama storylines and I love to read your take on them because I feel like your're taking the thoughts out my head.

Thank you so much to gummimochi for recapping Running Man. I get my kicks from reading your caps every week and while I may have my own misgivings [that I may had wrote down in my comments about], I would wish to say that it is from reading gummimochi's recap that I realized my lack of perspective in some sections of Running Man which I had not seen before. Thank you again, gummimochi, for your recaps which had made me enjoy Running Man in a whole new level. =)

Thanks to all the guest bloggers! With you all volunteering to take on recaps of dramas and variety shows, it allows javabeans and girlfriday to spend less time in the fourth dimension and allows us readers to get plenty more awesome reading material when we visit the site.

Thank you gummimochi for your RunningMan recaps! I enjoy watching the show and to hear someone else find parts fun like I did is like an extra bonus.

HeadsNo2, thank you for your recaps. I'm watching History of a Salaryman and following along with your recaps. I'm also in the middle of Tree with Deep Roots and will read the recaps as I watch the rest of the episodes.

only1tony! Your review of the movie, 'The Man From Nowhere' was a great surprise! I got to see this movie in theaters and enjoyed it a lot. There was a part where the white subtitles couldn't be read because of the bright background, and thanks to your recap I got to find out what happened in that scene.

Thank you, kaedejun! Your recaps of 'What's Up' are awesome and I like the actress Kim So-yeon, too! Because of you (and Kim So-yeon), I'm going to try to finish Prosecutor Princess. Maybe if javabeans and girlfriday make access to the fourth dimension public, it'll be sooner than later (I imagine them saying, "keep wishing, bub").

The week's almost up, so I thought I'd express my gratitude before it ends. To be honest, there are a lot of guest bloggers I'd like to thank, but I can't remember the names of some of them. So, for those whose names I forgot, I will just resort to talking about the series they recapped.

So, first of all, I'd like to thank the bloggers who covered "Sungkyunkwan Scandal." It was the drama that made me come back and really addicted to watching Kdrama. The recaps had been wonderful, and they became my stress relievers.

Next, I'd like to thank HeadsNo2 for covering the currently airing "History of the Salaryman." I think it's a great series, but I wouldn't have really known if not for the wonderful insights HeadsNo2 shared through the recaps. Also, I enjoyed the earlier and midway recaps of "Padam Padam."

Third, I'd like to cheer kaedejun. I think she still need to work on her narration, but there is no doubt that every recap she creates express her passion for the dramas and her desire to share her thoughts with us Kdrama addicts. So, kaedejun, fighting!

Last, I know that we are to say thanks to guest bloggers but I just can't skip and not say a big thank you to you, javabeans and girlfriday. I don't think I would have ever loved Kdrama as much as I do now if I had not found this wonderful site! I hope you gals never tire of writing about the best dramas of the year! 수고하세요! ^_^

PS: Am not from US or Canada >.<

Please keep up the good work. :)

Hello Samsooki,

I just wanted to say “Thank You” for your recaps and your occasional comments on this blog. I have only read the recaps about MNIKSS so far, but I would like to admit that I looked forward to reading them every Wednesday and Thursday this past summer. I am a night owl, so I would look for them around 5/6am, when you started posting them that early.
I liked and appreciated your attention to details, like the fact that you would mention a particular song playing in the background and its relevance to the scene you were commenting about. I appreciated that you knew how diverse the readership of Dramabeans is and that you never assumed that we knew some of the Korean cultural elements. You took the time to explain everything, enhancing in so doing our experience of the drama (an example of that is how you took the time to explain Sam Soon’s name, writing her name the way it was spelled in Chinese [I think]).

You always gave us food for thought, such as when you remarked that (in episode 13, I believe) when Samshik ask Sam Soon for more skinship (when they are in the bedroom), she doesn’t say no necessarily, she just says that she wants to lose weight first. With this answer, Sam Soon is indicating that she is willing to have a relationship of some sort with Samshik “thus becoming the other woman” since, technically, Samshik had not broken up with his girlfriend yet. I never thought about it that way, until you pointed it out and realized that you were right. I could go on and on about examples of how you made me think, but I will stop here.

I have also read some of your comments on different posts (on Dramabeans) and I would like to say how refreshing I think it is to read a guy’s perspective about Korean dramas and about Korea in general, especially for us non Koreans who have developed an interest in South Korea and its culture and its peoples. I found interesting the comments you made about how Korean Americans were not perceived in the same way (in Korea) that Koreans who grew up in Korea were (you explained it well, I can’t do it justice here). I also appreciated your sharing your experience about how you became aware that you were(or were viewed in this country) as an Asian male, which you never questioned until that was pointed out to you in college. I am not an American, and I did not grow up in this country, so my experience of race and awareness of it is different from the one of the people I have talked to in the US (I am not white). As someone interested in culture, peoples and the social and historical fabric of a country (in this case, the US), I was fascinated by what you wrote and I appreciated your candor.

Another instance was when you participated in a conversation about immigrants and how they were perceived in Korea and at some point you related that to the way that African Americans have struggled to be accepted as equal citizens of this country. Once again, I can’t do justice to how you expressed things and how the conversation developed , but I remember that you explained it well, and your analogies/examples were spot on in making me understand how some issues were perceived in Korea and how Koreans reacted to certain things. I appreciate that you don’t seem to romanticize Korea or bash it, you just say what is and explain what needs to be explained. I also liked when you talked about your first trip to Korea and how you thought everything Korean was the best thing since sliced bread (and how you grew out of that eventually).
I will add that I like the way you write, I find you funny, and I have learned a lot from reading your comments/recaps.

As someone who grew up and lived in France for many years, I loved it when you took the time to describe the French pastries in the recaps for MNIKSS. You took me down memory lane, and those were good memories. Than k you for taking the time to research those recipes and for making our mouths water.

Thank you Samsooki for enlightening us and for sharing some of your life experiences with us. We do appreciate it and we do appreciate you (and Mrs Samsooki, when you happen to mention her)

Thank you,

Sorry, but I also really wanted to add, thank you for explaining and warning us about the frequency and relevance (if I may use that word) of bathroom jokes in Korean dramas. After reading your explanations in MNIKSS, I was less grossed out by it and understood that it was part of the culture and that it came with the territory of understanding Korean style of humor and joking.

I apologize for adding comments, I wish my thoughts had been better organized, when I wrote my first long message. Again, you guys (the bloggers, guests and all) help us a lot in understanding better the Korean culture and we appreciate your hard work and your dedication and the time you invest to share your knowledge with us.

HeadsNo2, you are awesome. I love reading your recaps ever since seeing TWDR.

I didn't know if Dramabeans was going to cover it at first, but I watched it anyway because of Song Joongki. I was kind of confused, but I kept on because of the eyecandy. And then lo and behold, there were recaps!

Your recaps were thoughtful, informative and pretty much said what I had been thinking. Thank you for making a great show even better and I'm so glad you decided to recap TWDR and Salaryman!

Keep it up!

I want to thank "headsno2" for doing the recap of Tree with deep roots.
It was a very unique drama that your recapped gave it a sparkling shine by reading it. I don't really read recaps but your recap was really good, the audience can feel the emotion through the words you choose. The interpretation was good. Great job! I learned few new words from your recaps:) looking forward to see some of your recaps~ Hope you all the best in the future. Take care ~

First off, I just want to thank everybody (both Javabeans, and Girlfriday) and the Guest Bloggers (gummimochi, kaedejun, HeadsNo2) who take the time and recap our favorite dramas. I’m a brown West-Indian girl coming from Canada who doesn’t speak Korean so when I watch K-dramas, there is sometimes a bit of confusion when in regards to the language. There are often puns, themes, and inside Korean jokes that are lost to me as a non-Korean speaker. I come to Dramabeans and read the recaps because I know that when I do, each and every recapper takes the time and explains everything (with a side of cleverness, humour and wit) which is something that I LOVE about this site, its inclusive and open to everybody, Korean or non-Korean. The only thing that is a must is your passion and love for K-dramas! (which is something that I have! :) )

First I want to thank nokcha icecream, who recapped God of Study. When this drama came out my Noona love for Yoo Seung-ho came about so your recaps really helped me keep up to date and made me want to watch it. Thank You, nokcha icecream.

Next I want to thank kaedejun, who recaped You’ve Fallen for Me. I liked both Jung Yong-hwa and Park Shin-hye in Your Beautiful so when they were paired to be together in this drama I was curious. For me, I tend to read the recaps first about a drama to see where its going and if I’m interested in it, and if I’m invested I start to watch the drama (then read the recaps later), and your enthusiasm and whit really made reading them fun. Thank You, kaedejun.

And lastly, I am going to thank Dahee_Fanel, because if it wasn’t for your recap of The Princess’s Man in the Year in Review, I would have missed out on this drama and that would have been a real shame! Your passion and viewpoint of this drama made me want to watch it and like your sentiments, it did feel good to be addicted to a drama again,( and yes I did get huge bags under my eyes because of the marathons I was pulling to watch this drama.) It was AMAZING and its my favourite drama of 2011, and if it wasn’t for your review I would have missed out on it. Thank You, Dahee_Fanel.

Again, Thank You to every blogger here on Dramabeans who takes the time to recap dramas, its very much appreciated! :)

I'd like to thank aberdeen_angus and kaedejun for the Prosecutor Princess recaps. At the time that show was airing, I hadn't discovered dramas yet, but when I watched it about a year later, I really enjoyed reading your recaps along with it.

While I'm at it, I'd like to thank every guest recapper at dramabeans, even the ones whose recaps I've never read, because the fact that you take the time to do this means that there is a wider variety of dramas being recapped than there would be otherwise. I think the site is really benefited by having you here.

Even if I don't always agree with your opinions on certain things, I find your writing style intelligent and fun -- and I'm always happy to see a new post written by you.

I also can't help but give a shout out to orangy911. Thank you for helping me get through the difficult sections of "Me Too, Flower!" and for always leaving us readers a long comments section. I really appreciated that and all your thoughts on the drama.
