Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #4

javabeans: So here we are with the last giveaway in our five-year anniversary extravaganza! Phew, I’m tired. All this organizing is exhausting. Next year Dramabeans is just gonna have to deal with a store cake and a third-rate magician.

girlfriday: Just no clowns. That’s no way to spend a birthday.

javabeans: Now I know how Santa feels. Well, maybe without the drunk crazy.

girlfriday: Maybe this is why he drinks.

javabeans: Who knew it was work giving stuff away?

girlfriday: Well I’m inherently selfish, so not me. But it WAS really cool to read everyone’s thank you’s to our hard-working contributors and guesties. Thanks for giving them so much love!

javabeans: Yes. It makes us feel better for loading them down with recaps. What, this recap factory doesn’t run on unicorn dust and fangirl dreams, you know.

girlfriday: No, it runs on the blood sweat and tears of the few willing to be paid in Dramabeans Dollars, aka Abs Photos of the Day.

javabeans: Anyway, this is our last giveaway to celebrate our fifth birthday, which means this is your last chance to enter to win a birthday giveaway prize!

girlfriday: For the last big hurrah, we’re giving away a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, so you can watch dramas, listen to kpop, and read Dramabeans wherever you go! If you end up in rehab because of it, we will disavow all knowledge of enabling your habit.

javabeans: Enter at your own peril.

And now, for our winners. Congratulations to…

  • Jules (aka snoozit), winner of a one-year premium subscription to Dramafever,
  • Missyu_who, winner of the other premium subscription to Dramafever,
  • and Carinne, winner of the iPod nano (with javabeans playlist).

Giveaway #4

Question: What do you want to see on Dramabeans in 2012? This is your chance to tell us that one thing you’ve always wanted to see on DB or what you want to see more of this year. Maybe that’s more of the same, or maybe you’ve got a wild ‘n crazy out-there idea. We are not averse to crazy. (As always, please use a valid email in the comment form. No need to tell us where you live this time.)

Prize: A 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tablet 7.0 Plus.

Winner announced: Sunday, January 29, at 8pm, Pacific Standard Time*

*Or, 10pm in Mexico City, 11pm in NYC, 1am in Buenos Aires, 4am in London, 5am in Paris, noon in Singapore and Manila, 1pm in Seoul and Tokyo, or 3pm in Sydney and Vladivostok. Than you for all the wonderful recaps you do. Dramabeans is my go-to site for k-drama recaps. I'd love to see your great recaps of more of the on-going dramas. I'm having fun watching Wild Romance right now but don't get to enjoy the added pleasure of reading high quality recaps of it.

I really enjoy reading the recaps and upcoming drama news on your site. I think the opinions of the writers really add personal touches and make everything more interesting. It would be sweet if once in awhile, visitors can choose a drama to be recapped in the future (via poll).

In addition, maybe you could give some travel info about some of the Korea locations in the dramas. I know a lot of people probably would like to go to Korea and may want to visit some places they watch in the dramas.

I know it's been mentioned a couple of times, but I would like to see more culture posts as well. Even though I'm 100% Korean and fluent, since I grew up in the U.S. my whole life and my parents are 1.5 generation, I always ran into some cultural barriers when dealing with really Korean Koreans (1st gen co-workers/bosses, friends, etc.) I realized that the way of thinking between 1st and 2nd gen is VERY different. So perhaps some posts looking into the work culture, school culture, dating, etc. (as depicted in k-drama culture and how it aligns/differs with real-life culture) would be very useful to me personally and hopefully interesting to read for other readers as well :)

I actually would love to hear your take on the kpop. I don't know whatever you guys listen to it, but I can tell that you guys have some kind of knowledge about it.

If not kpop, maybe a music section where you guys give us a little inside on the type of music you like or some suggestion on your opinion of good music.

Also, I want a recap on Dream High 2 and The King =)

I love dramabeans just the way it is. But if i had to make a suggestion for a change for 2012, i would suggest maybe adding a poll to the side bar for movie reviews or a poll for reviews on dramas that aren't being recapped, something that gives us a clue on whether its worth it to check it out or not.

i really like this site. a lot. i definitely love all the opinions and news i read on here because they always make me laugh and it keeps me up to date with all the drama related news. IT'S HONESTLY SO GREAT AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH. there are so many changes in this site and they all work for the better(:

it's so hard to change something because i feel like this is one of the best planned out sites. everything's there and easy to find. it's so clear :D one thing i would like to see changed though would be drama ratings updated more, preferably after the series just ended. hahaha. i have this tendency to check the drama ratings right after a drama series end, just to have your final thoughts on it. i think it's great. it also gives me an idea of what to watch and what not to. i actually don't really know when the drama ratings get updated, so if there could be some way to know to...?

again, thanks for all of your great work! i love spending time on here regardless of whatever else i have to do. this site is already so great, so it's really hard for me to pinpoint what i want to see next.

Dramabeans's "Mobile Theme" looks different!

But anyways,
I literally just thought of this: how 'bout polls? As in, like a Poll of the Week with fun (and funny) questions relating to dramas, actors, etc., and since a drama is never quite complete until I stop by Dramabeans, it would be fun to hear...er, *read* everyone's thoughts and opinions on new dramas (if they are watching it) -- it doesn't necessarily have to be long; it could even be one sentence or even a single word.

That's not too crazy, yeah?
Whatever you guys do, I'll be looking forward to it!

I love everything you do, and i'm sure it takes a LOT of time, effort, and energy to do it so i don't want to ask for anything too crazy.

if it's not too hard, i think it might be nice to get more movie reviews - i hear about upcoming movies through you guys, but then i never really have any idea whether it held up to expectations or not.

the other thing i really love it just the conversations taht you post sometimes between you and girlfriday - they're the best parts on this site!

keep up the great work!

More Cultural trivia please! :)

Dramabeans is doing a great job otherwise anyway and there's no space for more! I can follow all my favorite dramas here and keep updated with the new and upcoming! I even introduced my friends to this site and now they're regular readers too! :D

The reason for cultural trivia is because I loved your previous posts especially about the "Oppa" and "Noona" terminology and "Banmal" and "Jeondae"! Whenever there's someone who asks about these terms (I still find it hard to explain to people) I just refer them here! :D And this is a great place and platform for anyone to learn more about K Culture because its already so widespread and known to everyone!

Otherwise, DB hwaiting and have a wonderful new year ahead!!

I think an offcial facebook page would be cool! You could have polls on what we thought of the recent drama episode you recapped. OH! or maybe a Like button for the comments section. Some people here have funny things to say, but only funny enough to "like" it.

Hmmm...the stakes are going up!

LOL

Well, I have been lazy to read lately because not many series I am interested enough to watch. I only read recaps on series I want to watch but don't have time, or series I just can't seem to spend time watching but wish to know the details.

So I guess a small summary should suffice for lazy-butts like me?

Or...

summaries for other series that recappers (everyone!) watch but didn't finish for some reason or another. Just a small summary of up-to-the-last-episode-I-watch, why stop or finish, and a rating of how good it is!

I like that. A short read - a review!

Yeah, a small review instead of a whole recaps.

(I'd love to do this actually. I like to do reviews...
Recaps- for the brave.... :P)

I wih DB would make more korean culture related articles. More behind the scene, too, perhaps. And by that i mean no gossip but different analyses about the korean entertainment.
I wish you could also make one recap article about one old but favorite drama.
And maybe include a (numerous) rating system at the end of a first episode. I know that's silly, but it can help sometimes to prioritize viewing without reading spoilers !
Mainly i wish that DB goes on and on about korean dramas ! congrats !

Also, I have always wanted to know your thoughts on J-doramas. It'd be awesome if you could choose a few that you like and share your thoughts about them with us.
Your recommendations are always great, that's why! ^^

Welcome the new Recappers!
Happy 2012 everyone!

I would like to see more of the First Episode Series! I think it's a great way to preview new or old classic series, when you don't think you have time to cover the certain new series, or when things are going really slow and you would like to do some throwbacks to great shows.

Movie reviews or even better MOVIE RECAPS would be soooooo awesome for the newly released movies non-koreans can't see or understand. It definitely also helps people who are visiting/living in Korea but don't understand Korean well enough to enjoy the movies in theaters! Also, personally I always love reading your insights and comments on scenes in the shows. It's as if I'm sharing the drama viewing experience with someone since it gets lonely watching things without people to talk to!

I know that it's simply impossible to do everything since you recappers do have a life outside of dramas (do you? Heh, just kidding--no, seriously, how do you take the time to watch dramas and write recaps and maintain some semblance of life? I'm curious), but since you asked...

I would love to have more recaps on the site--not just for currently airing shows, but also for past ones. I've been wanting to read recaps of old ones especially after Samsooki wrote the lovely recaps on Kim Sam Soon. Also, just like the others who have commented before me, movie reviews would be excellent! Also, how about continuing some recaps for Korean novels, like how the Coffee Prince novel was recapped? I'd love to read recaps for the novel counterparts of several dramas I've watched, and I think many others would also be delighted. :D

Oh, and more culture stuff! I would LOVE to read more about that. Not just modern Korean culture, but you know, ones that are relevant in sageuk dramas as well.

Like majority of those here, I would love to see more movie recaps. I love this site because it not only recaps the shows, but y'all also explain the cultural significance/protocol that happens in the dramas. With that said, maybe some articles on Korean culture and customs would be great!

Thank you again for your time and efforts to make this site what it is!

I would love to see Dramabeans bring back the betting game/ JB and GF face off, the one where Javabeans and Girlfriday gambled over 2 (maybe more bets allowed in the future?) to-air dramas and wagered on the one they thought would win out. Unless I missed something, the last face off was between Dream High and My Princess, which was so long ago! Maybe this time JB and GF could add a "why" factor to back up their choices, or even bring guest bloggers into the mix, although JB and GF's convo was so hilarious I think it'd still be awesome if the face offs stay in the same format. Perhaps Dramabeans could poll readers on their betting horse, although I kind of cringe at that prospect as it runs the risk of making Dramabeans out to be a tabloid or Allkpop or something (the year-end poll is enough, in my opinion).

And this other point is completely "selfish", but I'm dying to know what JB and GF are currently watching (and I'd like to know because I'm nosy).

Also, more K-pop culture deconstruction would be nice, when there "happens" to be a lull in Dramaland (which definitely isn't right now!).

Happy birthday Dramabeans, I love this site so much, it's always the first site I run to when I get on the computer and I refresh the main page about a bazillion times a day (or at least too many to count). Thank you to all the contributors, and to JB and GF for hosting these giveaways and putting so much effort into this website!

Congratulations to the winners. I think I actually remember Carrine from OT. Does she go to the OT?

Okay... I actually like the format that you have. I like the drama recaps. I actually would prefer if your schedule allows the recaps to appear about 24hrs or less after an episode.

So if asking more stuff makes the recaps slower- would prefer the recaps. I also like it that the news is verified before being printed here.

What would we like? I though even with the guesties it's difficult trying to do everything. There are just too many dramas and movies and news to be had.

However do like the old drama recap idea. How about 4 old dramas per year? I haven't had time to watch older dramas and would love to have some recaps.

Like Green Rose. What's the deal? Plus Winter Sonata? Or What happened in Bali? Or Que Sera Sera. The comments about these dramas makes me too afraid to start them without the recaps.

Thank you for all your hard work. I've enjoyed reading the answers the last month. The what have you done for K drama was the best. There are some way more die hard drama fans than me out there :-)

I think after establishing such a strong following over the years, a forum/message board would be a great addition to this website. It seems people are commenting more and more as time goes by and a forum would be a great way for drama addicts to have a place to discuss dramas. I think it would also be awesome because there are tons of dramas that the dramabeans' team cannot cover simply due to the large amount of dramas being offered nowadays. Having a place for just fans of dramas to share their own recaps or reviews would expand the horizon of drama information. Or even to just ask questions as some people like me do not speak Korean and sometime miss out on certain metaphors or meanings that get lost in translation. Anyways, I love the Running Man and 1N2D recaps so more variety is also fun! Thanks for 5 years!

Thank you for all the hard work you all put in to give us readers the drama recaps! Keep up the great work! As for my wish, I know that this is a stretch and really very ambitious, but I'd love to see a novel translation someday. For example, I would love to read the English translation of the book/s where "The Moon That Embraces The Sun" were based on. This is why I said wishful thinking. I know this is never going to happen, but hey, I can dream, can't I? I know that someone on another blog is already attempting to do this, but it wouldn't hurt to have more people doing it. I get so impatient. I guess movie recaps would also be a good idea. Anyway thanks again for the excellent job you all do! More power to this site! :)

As part of the weekly Open Threads, can you introduce a song from an Indie Band and a link to for people to read about the band? Or, if the links are in Korean, a short intro to the history of the band.
Everyone covers the popular and mainstream artists. But, it's hard to stumble upon unknowns or little-known artists, especially for non-Korean speakers.
Thanks and again, congratulations for 5 wonderful years.

i hope you can post as often as you can, playlist of different Korean songs. I religiously downloaded them eversince i started following your blog 5 years ago, specially the soundtracks kdramas. In fact, they are the only songs inside my I-pod and I-touch and in all the laptops i'm using. Just for the Coffee Prince alone, i was able to download more than 70 songs =). Happiness!!!

It would be beautiful if we can get complete soundtrack. But only if it won't post a problem to you.

Thanks so much Javabeans, GF and all the other contributors and comment posters alike. Thanks for this 5 years of companionship and many more to come (^-^)

I’d like to read article about korean (pop) culture more, just like when you write about piggy back ride, you guys talk about the sageuk way of speaking on the last podcast, I don’t aware about that since I don’t speak korean, I like that kinda info. Or when you write about the glossary on the kdrama, the jondaemal and banmal and oppa! Oh my, how is one supposed to watch kdrama without the knowledge of the most important word in Korea. Btw I've succeeded converting my mom (she’s 66) into kdrama thanks to 49days (Yay! Kang-ah rules!!), speaking of which I should teach her about the word oppa and oppa~

Btw I agreed with more movie review and monthly podcast would be great to discuss about the dramas that you guys don’t recap and yes it would be epic if we could hear samsooki’s voice on podcast. Thanks JB and GF.

Kind of like you guys might choose an actor and an actress per month that you want to write about for example,
and include your favourite characters played by them, what you like about their acting, what you don't like about their acting, what their good points are, favourite outfit, worst outfit, who you ship them with,...perhaps memorable quotes, etc.

Because it's always nice to find out more about the people we see on our computer screens, and I always like hearing your opinions on everything hehe ♥

anyways happy birthday once again, dramabeans. thank you to all of you who make my drama-viewing experience so much more enjoyable!
