Ha Ji-won and Lee Seung-gi confirm The King

Aaaaand, we FINALLY have a king. I seriously thought this drama would never secure a cast. But now the production team behind highly anticipated miniseries The King has announced that Ha Ji-won and Lee Seung-gi have been confirmed as the soon-to-be royal couple to hit the small screen this March. Looks like the king’s in for a noona romance, but considering that Seung-gi’s basically the poster boy for noona love, it only seems fitting.
The King is the new project from the team behind Beethoven Virus (PD Lee Jae-kyu and writers Hong Jin-ah and Hong Ja-ram), and is described as both a romantic comedy and a “human melo black comedy.” Uh… so basically you have no idea what it is. If it’s actually a dark comedy, all the better, but I’m not going to get my hopes up about that. The story takes place in a fantasy world where modern-day South Korea is governed by a constitutional monarchy. Lee Seung-gi will play the crown prince, Lee Jae-ha, who is just the face of the royal family. He quite literally only has a handsome face and cares nothing about politics, and is described as horribly spoiled and materialistic, and extremely blunt. That’s pretty much his Brilliant Legacy character taken up a notch to royal pain in the ass, yeah?
Meanwhile, Ha Ji-won plays Kim Hang-ah, a legendary North Korean special forces agent, now an instructor for the special forces. They begin their unlikely romance with prejudices about each other, but eventually come to fall in love. So… Pride and Prejudice meets Shiri?
I’m excited about the cast, but confused as hell about the premise, and just praying to the drama gods that it’s not Myung-wol the Spy Redux. I feel like with this production team it’ll go for a more serious version of the modern royal family rather than the goofy one, even if it’s a rom-com at heart. It’s the kind of premise that rests entirely on tone, so I guess we wait, and hope for some royally funny, kickass romance this spring.
The King follows The Moon That Embraces the Sun and premieres March 14 on MBC.

(1) Not everybody has to love Seung-gi.
(2) Not everybody has to hate Seung-gi.
(3) Everybody does, however, have to play well with others in the sandbox or you get taken out for time-out.

I felt like his role in the king is very much similar in his role in 1n2d? I got this really strong feeling about it,but the only difference is he will not demonstrate his fun personality or smart quiz answers. But through being high of himself and materialistic. So yeah,I may watch the show if I got time.

It just make me remember about how Ha Ji Won acted with Jang gen Seuk (when he is a new comer) in Hwang Jin Yi.
Granted, Lee Seung Gi is not acted as much as the others do, but took a breath and act is not wrong.

seems you don't know LSG well. he's a singer first and foremost. an MC then an actor. he can't do drama more often with his busy schedules. but managed to have two wonderful dramas while being a mainstay in 1night 2days, plus Strong Heart.

ya. I don't think he is acting humble because it'll be kind of hard for him to act nice and humble to everybody 24/7 , both on and off-screen. Considering how he is one of the top few idols/entertainers in Korea, he would have long been caught by the paparazzi if he really wasn't nice to others. I think he's a good kid.

Nop - he isn't the humble boy - he just respects Korean good manners - he can be pretty mean when he wants to - but his brain is wired a bit differently than us
he is too smart to make stupid mistakes even though here and there he can be quite blunt even though generally he is subtle enough to not raise some brows.
I remember quite well the scene in Strong Heart when NMW told him Let's be friends and LSK said" this remains to be seen" or something like that, NMW is a 8 months older than LSK and both debuted in 2004 LSK in June and TRAX in July with Paradox - therefore if LSK can make himself to have the upper hand he will do it without reservations but without being on the headlines for hitting old ladies. He is just smart enough to know when he can do it.

Wow, I guess that's a kind of joke right? It's like how someone tell a story, that depend on how people deliver it.
I remember about the davichi member who doesn't like seunggi's gift and she change it into something more suited her. She admit that she make that story to made people laugh, never expecting people will sent him threat afterwards.
Plus, I don't see the connection of the humble (or fake or what) thingy here, remember about Choi Min soo? He is a GREAT actor, but he has terrible personality. So why does offend someone just because the personality?

This was in the Strong Heart MGIG Special. Did you watch the whole story? NMW even agreed to LSG's explanation afterwards: LSG was (at that time) in the personality of his MGIG character as Dae Woong, and the director told him not to be too close with NMW since they will act as rivals. I remember this because it crossed my mind that LSG was acting arrogant, too.

Sports Seoul is probably the most well-known (or should I say, infamous) paparazzi in Korea. They were the one that first reported the shocking news of Seo Taiji and Lee JiAh’s marriage and divorce, as well as many other scandals over the years.
It turns out that they were pretty ‘curious’ about SeungGi too.
They staked out in front of SeungGi’s house for 6 whole months!!! But they did not see ANY misbehavior or wrongdoing. The article was actually full of praises for SeungGi, like how well-mannered and how sincere he was even in real life, and he was indeed an UmChinAh.

please don't even post that site. it's that site that "hopes 1N2D ends soon", "hopes Seunggi does another variety show with only Jiwon and Na PD" since "Sugeun was mentioned by Seungwoo for not being nominated in the Daesang therefore we hate him" and "Taewoong splashed water on a sick Seunggi and he took the pice of paper out of Sugeun's pockets and put it back to Seunggi's so Seunggi got the punishment for the morning mission", or the site that "wants KBS to apologize for a mistake in the caption of Seunggi's height" that did not even last 3 seconds in a 1 1/2 hour show, or "KBS is purposely lessening Seunggi's height because he is leaving KBS soon" and all that crap.

I LOVE SEUNGI but i do not want him in this drama.He doesn't have enough experience under his belt to work with Ha Ji won....I am saying this with the best intention but i think this drama would either show how lacking he is as an actor or How much he has improved since GUMIHO....My bet is on Lacking not because i don't like him but because i think that Shin Mina variety in acting was what made the chemistry work.

LSG better deliver his role as the king perfectly. I have no doubt about HJW since she is one of South Korea's top actresses.
LSG has been slowly improving his acting chops but barely. Honestly, I wanted someone with more experience to act opposite the lovely HJW.
I'm predicting high ratings for the drama since HJW's acting has been highlighted in increasing ratings i.e. What Happened in Bali, Secret Garden, etc.

Just because one or two dramas were hits does not mean every drama of his will be a hit. The life in the entertainment business means ups and downs, high and low ratings dramas. I'm not saying this drama will tank, and I'm not saying it'll soar. I'm just saying that an actor attached to a project does not necessarily guarantee an all out ratings success. The story comes into play too and if it can hold the viewers' attention/intrigue. We'll all just have to wait and see.
So chillax. Kick back and wait it out.

I only pointed out that ratings of a past project is not a sure fire way to guarantee that another project from the same actor would be a ratings sweep. It was an explanation why it's pointless to use ratings as a way to prove an actor's worth.
And yes, because it MUST be spelled out apparently I'll get an attacked, the size of their resume is not a real way to evaluate their worth too.

Aw, man. I really wanted to see Cha Seung-won in this role. Got all excited and everything.
I love Lee Seung-gi, but he and Ha look like siblings. Maybe they'll have chemistry? We can only hope. Or she might just eat him alive. Then again, that was fun in MGIAG. Not gonna lie though, I'm getting a little tired of the noona-romance.
The writing sounds very... shaky. Then again, BV was not a well-written drama. The only thing that made it worth watching was Kim Myung-min. (And, ok, Jang Geun-seok looking like a real guy.)

Yay, finally, seunggi's back in a drama!!
the changing in actors doesnt give a good impression, and the storyline is worrying too what with the unsuccessful north-south korea romance dramas recently.
but seunggi has yet to be in a bad project be it acting or variety, so i'm just gonna trust this will be a good one also.
and boy always has good chemistry with any of the actress he has been acting so far, including Shin Min Ah where people initially doubt they can make a good pair yet look how it turns out.
so, yeah, i'm completely excited! and it's timing is perfect too. i can just transfer my obsession to it once Moonsun is done heeee

I think the producers of the said drama has better judgment as to why they chose Lee Seung Gi for the lead role.His acting is good and we know he's improving.So We're hoping that those who doesn't like him won't judge him just because of that. I think he'll do good with HJW on this drama.
I don't think he's FAKE like what most people say (perhaps those who dislike him the most)..A lot of the actors/singer who has worked with him said nothing but all praises to him for being well-mannered,true personality and all.Just give him a break from all the negativities please.
As for the ratings,I think his fans will contribute a lot on this aspect.^_^
Anyway,I'm really excited about this drama.I have nothing but high hopes for this one..^__^

lee sung gi drama brilliant legacy averaged 47.1 tv ratings in 2009. in 2010 despite the huge sucess of baker king his drama mgiag was able to acheive 21% ratings.he clearly won the competition over kim hyung joong playful kiss which crashed. despite all the sucess in dramas yet people taunt him here which is hard for me to understand. he has most cfs, and varied talents as nation singer,mc and appearing 1st on all poles. probaly now he is korea 's biggest superstar after even surprassing rain and others on all polls.even rain drama fugitive crashed and suffer lower ratings than mgiag at that time. so plz don't taunt him if you can't support him/

BL was a weekend drama though
I would say he is Koreas Boy Next Door
instead of Koreas "superstar"
and MGIAG ratings are 14.6% average
which is quite solid and i would say a hit but not really a blockbuster hit
I think its fair to say he is quite loved but whether it is more for his variety show personality than his acting skills is debatable
i dont think its wrong to say that HJW is a better actress
coz its the truth

then what about surprassing rain,won bin.hyun bin in all polls. if he is not korea's superstar i wonder then who is. why the senior actors praise him and love his work. in recent interview baker king lead actor choose lee sung gi the best actor which impressed him the most. i agree hjw is a better actress but for me lee sung gi is up there with won bin,hyun bin etc,ithink shin minah recently admitted tha mgiag gave her popularity which she never felt before and how worried and happy she was to star in mgiag. i won't say hjw is lucky to cast opposite lee sung gi or vice versa.so both have aura of their own. both will prove to be a sucess

Lee Seung-gi has won lots of popularity polls against lots of popular idols and actors. I can't pin-point you to any particular one because there has literally been a whole bunch he's won. Unlike DBSK, SNSD, and pretty much every other idol or actor, he maintains his popularity even when not promoting a new song or drama, and yes, it's because he's a well-liked fixture in variety. Also, unlike most male artist, actor or singer, he's really popular with both sexes. And not just with teens or young folks, but with ahjummahs and ahjusshi's as well (perfect son/son-in-law material). Anyway, long story short, he's very popular. Writing this up is making me chuckle because I'm not even a hardcore fan of his but even I know this about his appeal.

I think one or two polls are not that accurate to determine popularity from, but if you're consistently topping or rating pretty high in tons and tons of them, year after year, I think it's safe to say you're rocking on the popularity scale.
Oh, I don't object to your objection (pardon my redundancy, ha) on the comparison made on his acting. He has a lot of room for improvement. He won't improve unless he's given the opportunity, though, so I'm pretty receptive of him in this role. He may just bring it. And Ha Ji-won? Well, she gets to romance a hot young thing (subjective, maybe.. but I'm sure if you ask HJW she won't say he's ugly), so, why not?

yes lee sung gi will improve more in acting as he does more work. if you consider his age and the acting skills he displays for me he is in the same league as won bin, hyun bin,rain..the other distinguished actors expect rain very much do only acting.and have done a lot of work.lee sung gi is only done 3 dramas old .so if you take into consideration what multiple work he does at the age with not so much experience he is in the same league for me. i don't need to mention his popularity in think the post below will give you a clear indication. i think yesterday he beat sj and snsd for popularity award..conscecutively being in top 10 stars in 2009,2010 in all surveys and magazine posts. in 2011 even though he has not done a drama he is in top 10 actor list for 2011.that's his starpower. you can CHECK IT IF YOU WANT AT LSGFAN POSTS if yuou want by top critical acclaimers. still if you keep taunting you better take a chill pill. don't use terms like*headdesk* as it poorly reflects on you. we may have different opinions but still can be cordial.

You have no idea how big he is in Korea. He's not superstar because he's MEGASTAR and I'm not in a illusion or bias.
Although I'm a Airen, sometime I surprise about how much he's popular in Korea but still down to earth. If he's not popular, how can he 1st place favorite CF model for 8 moths consecutive, CF King 3 years consecutive, all his product he endorses increase sales, he's chosen 3 years consecutive model for Samsung, Pizza Hut, KB Bank and more.
Yes, he hasn't a great actor YET but I trust him, oneday he will become a great actor because he's the kind of person who continuously improves himself .This is a good chance to act with HJW, he will learn from her a lot.

All this hoopla about big ratings over a weekend drama? I can understand if Brilliant Legacy was a weekday drama and had aquired huge ratings, then you have bragging rights. But bragging over big ratings of a weekend drama...do that in korea and they will all laugh in your face.
My Girl is A Gumiho getting 21% ratings was laughable since it was competing against Playful Kiss, so it's not something worth bragging about either.

That's exactly my point, its EASY to get good ratings during weekend, so good ratings on a weekend is not something to boast about unless if they got huge ratings like that on a weekday. Baker Kim Tak Goo has bragging rights over weekend dramas such as Brilliant Legacy and Secret Garden cause it was aired on a weekday Wed-Thu with a new actor, yet it still kicked butts!

EASY? I don't think so, it's more about the story line and actors/actress performance. If the script and cast are good, high rating, not airtime exactly. Some air on weekend like Style, Smile you or Family Honor, ect. are not as high as BL that year. So I don't think any wrong to brag about that. No comment about BK, I love its story very much, waiting for every week but honestly don't have the interest to watch again and again like some drama

Bottomline Brilliant Legacy would never have gotten that kind of ratings during weekday. Everyone who lives in korea knows how hard it is to get good ratings for weekday dramas.
I guess he can consider himself lucky cause he will get paired up with Ha Ji Won, who'll be responsible to draw in the ratings...poor her.

It seem odd too for me, since the age gap is 9 years (HJW is older) but I believe in HJW's act,she'll be able to deliver it well. More importantly, I hope HJW can hone LSG's act, she is the perfect ne of that.
I know many people underestimating Seung Gi's here, but he has that 'will', the will of doing better, and I guess that's what that count, because hardwork is doing better than just a merely talent.

not so excited about the pairing. but i'll give it a go, since it's HJW's comeback drama. and to see seung-gi owning a sageuk hair and pulling off the look?

I am so excited for March, can't wait anymore. We can watch our Prince on the screen once again. We can watch him show his good acting skills. I don't care if some are asking why did they chose Lee Seunggi. Isn't it obvious? Because he is the King...:) and that is confirmed. I was so happy to know that he'd be paired with Ha Ji Won because I like her so much since Hwang JinYi time and I even cried with her Daddy Long Legs movie. And I expected that this issue will come. I believe in LSG's acting talent. He is a good actor and I am confident to say that. He's been paired with Han Hyo Joo and Shin Min Ah and we all know that they are one of the great actresses in Korea. Cheers to Seunggi. We are so happy you. Just keep the fire on! :)

We have The King, I Am the Joseon King, I am the King, and also... Fashion King?
And this is amusing, I don't know that there are so many who don't like Lee Seunggi here.
Anyway, too bad Jo Insung won't be the lead...I always wish he and Ha Jiwon would be together in a project again.

I was more excited about this pairing until I read the premise.
Rather than see LSG again as a spoiled rich, etc, with a heart of gold, why not a damaged, bitter, LSG pretending to be fine?
I don't want to see righteous anger, or disappointed tears, or pouting from him, but downright naked selfishness that doesn't apologize. That could turn his image around.
Perhaps I am thinking of how JIS captured my imagination in WHIB playing across from HJW.
HJW can do whatever she wants, she'll be great.

Sometimes I feel that all I ever wish to accomplish in my drama addiction is to find something that made me as full of emotions and thoughts (the latter being the the better of the two) as WHIB.

This is getting pretty ridiculous. With the assumption that this site has a crowd of the more mature followers, I cant believe some of the comments I'm reading. I can understand it if the drama already aired and he performed poorly- then you are within your right, but for most of you to jump the same bandwagon bashing him because your favorite star is not casted is revolting.
-The same negative remarks were said when he was casted with SMA for MGIAG- yet both marvelously pulled through with their amazing chemistry ending the show with top ratings.
-Again people prematurely voiced their doubts that he couldn't do it when it was announce for him to host SH solo- and yet he managed to proved them wrong again- receiving many praises from the viewers and the press.
Have we all not learn anything here?
If you must bash someone for their so call "lack of skills" and personal character- then at least have some facts to support your ignorant statements. Otherwise, never underestimate the ability of another, only to cover up for your own short comings. Spare us the hateful comments and use the time more wisely to reflect on your own character before judging someone else.

Thank you for this comment. I'm not exactly a Lee Seung Gi fan (although, between him & and Ha Ji Won, he's definitely the reason I'd even consider watching THE KING -- not HJW) -- but people should wait to see him IN the drama before criticising.
To bash him merely because their preferred male star is not casted is just ridiculous.

Finally! Someone who talks sensibly. I bet if they didn't say how CSW and the others were orignally contenders for the same drama, no one would have started complaining. The thing is, the other guys ARE NOT casted for the drama. Live with it. No point creating a mountain out of a molehill.

I totally agree with you. This is freaking childish. I thought most readers on here were mature, but it doesn't seem that way. Hate him, like him, whatever, but don't bring in their personalities or personal lives. Whether he is humble or not, doesn't necessary make him a bad or good actor. I've complained with you all (i.e. YoonA) but as far as I remember, no one brought in her personality. So if you're going to rant, do it appropriately. A lot of us would prefer not to see your comments about how good of a person he is or how bad of a person he is. Because who cares? I just want to see a good drama.

Totally agree with your comment. And anyway probably half of the actors/actresses/idols are not in real life as the image they have build. Some of them are probably douchebags. What matters is their artistic contribution.
