OK WOW!!! Just watched Padam Padam 12 and I'm gonna kill Nosy Fish Ahjumma! Seriously, claim you have all of those successful children... go ruin their lives. Why are you so worried about other people?
Anyway, everything else is great. Jina is finally making some sense so I will give her one more chance to treat uri Kang Chil well. Her dad is a total nut job and I was really rooting for Gook Soo to actually sue him so we didn't have to deal with it anymore. I do think his reconciliation with Jina was not handled well. There is no context for it. One day she woke up and wanted to go hiking with him but we're not really told what brought on this change of heart. And he claims he's sorry for beating his wife and brother but how sorry could he be when we just watched him beat up a total stranger?
Oh, one question... why is Jung suddenly mad at his Maybe Almost Father? They show the scene where he storms off and refuses to do a DNA test but it's not explained very well... all they say is that (Possible) Daddy has a wife and two other sons. Is he upset about that? I was confused.

One show that I always thought was real sweet that didn't get much props was Accidental Couple. Warning the male lead (I forget his name... Hwang something...) carries this show so the first few episodes are a little iffy but I found it to be have a lot of heart and a great bromance. It's a pity you had a bad day, but you know, 'it happens.
My day was fine, but I really do not care about calendar, I don't even celebrate new year - it's just a day that some authority named first, the same is about every other day. Not worth noticing except it has to be written correctly on some documents.
YRH! I forgot to tell you over my many weeks of only-barely-here-ness that I'm downloading Delightful Girl... Actually, I'm almost done downloading it. I'd tried getting Zenkai Girl, but it didn't want to join the ranks of dramas in queue. Anywho, after Gumiho: Tale of the Fox's Child, Delightful Girl will probably be next on my list :)
Looking at Nida's question about underrated shows ppl love prompts me to ask: How do you all keep track of the dramas you've already seen. I know it can be difficult enough to keep the dramas you're currently watching straight, but do ppl have lists somewhere? Do you download stuff, so it's merely a matter of going back and seeing what's in your folder? Do you bookmark things? I'm curious.
If you don't remember a drama after a year it is not worth remembering :), so really no need to bother making any notes, I think. But I only watch online, maybe people who download have some differing opinions.
I just tend to remember. I'm also a fan of those red-spined Harlequin romance novels. I've read 100's of them, but if someone hands me an old one, I can usually confirm that I've read it before, even with all the similar plots. Just lucky that way, I guess.
So I don't have a list, but I know whether I've watched a particular show or not.
I watch so many dramas ( 14 at that time ), that i have to use a log book, which never breaks down :). I only use streaming, so i write what episode, what mirror, and any useful info like character's name, actors name or time code for scenes that impress me. I like the idea that i can refer to it. For my comp, i use Google chrome. Could be perfect without the pop-ups, but still it's the best browser. Tabs and well organized folders do the rest, to waste as few time as possible.
Wow, you are really serious, Mystisith. I like it! I need to do the log book thing with novels and fanfic that I read. I read (or I used to read) so much that I tend to forget what I've tried. I'm usually okay at remembering titles, but I've re-read novels w/o realizing until midway before. This happens even more often with fanfic, b/c I'm more likely to start one and give up quickly if I don't like it.
How do you do the tracking thingy with Chrome? I have Chrome, but I don't usually use it.
Tracking thingy ? I'm not sure what you mean. I'm french and my english vocabulary applied to computers is bad :(
How to do the requests ( sites, email adresses and anyword ) : Just type anything in the address bar.
To search a keyword on a site page : click the wrench menu on the right of the address bar, then click Find and enter the word you wish.
All the settings are done on the wrench menu anyway, including the Help center : I think it's easier for you :).
- 2 folders always on my toolbar :
1) K drama blogs : Dramabeans, Hancinema, Dramawiki, Korean Drama, Koala's playground, Dramafever, Cherkell, Darksmurfsub, soompi, Thundie's prattle...
2) Streaming sites : Kimchidrama ( used for 60 % of everything i watch ), Viki, YT, Dramacrazy, Mysoju ( for the oldies ), Natnatvip, Dramastyle, Dramagaru, Dramafans, Epdrama. ( Ranked by using ).
- Tabs opened : 1 per streaming site approximately, but at the moment :
1 : Linguee ( translater )
2 : DB Main page always there...
3 : DB Open thread
4 : Viki. page of Ep 4 for the drama Ten to check subbing progression.
5 : Dramacrazy main page
6 : YT on ddscleve14's channel ( Padam, What's up ? and Color of w. posted raw, but fast and in single files )
7 : Kimchidrama main page ( for the OST Playlist player mostly :) )
8 : KD - History of a Salaryman ep 2
9 : KD - Bachelor's Veggie Store ep 7
10 : Kimchidownload ( loading Me too, Flower, bit by bit ).
Hope it helps...
At this point I'm new enough that I can just list them although I do take a bit to remember everything...and I can probably list them in order, even, since one would lead me to another and there's a logic for me. But I do have plans to keep a list, because even if it was only June, at this point, I've seen dozens, and I will start to forget. I have a list of coughcough something else coughcough that I used to be able to list in order too and now I can't even really remember coughcough some names coughcough.
Anyway I listed them on Raine's site...it was certainly close to 40 or 50, I think.
Ya, I actually have a library of all my books and sheet music and videos and DVDs on my computer. And I keep my dramas up to date with my blog. But I don't know if I could keep all those notes. Those are super super impressive. It's hard enough for me to keep track of the 4 or 5 dramas I watch (very slowly) at a time!
Unni - I'm getting to ur emails tonight! I've had late night rehearsals every single day this week!
Got a new concert soon? I was so happy when the holiday season was over. Still have choir rehearsal once a week but that's it, no extra instrument practise.
Rehearse well with your... what was it... string bass? viola? fiddle?... whatever your wooden-stringy-bowy thing is.
[evil grin, dodging the poke in the eye with the bow]
Sometimes you just have to have faith in a good writer. This story is finally making that "turn," like in a good game of Texas hold'em....lovely song at the end.
Just introducing myself as a quasi-lurker. I've been mainlining kdramas for the last few months and really loving the episode recaps on this page (And the fun commentary). Thanks for being such a fun community for me to peak in at!
Yes, but what did you think of all the naked, hot sex?
Only kidding (kinda) - have to agree with your points - I thought that the death scene at the end was epic. King was begging for an affirmation of love, and he sure didn't get one, did he. Perhaps he shouldn't have castrated the object of his love. Just sayin'.....
:)
Yeah, but Hong Lim lied. He did love the King..but he was in love/lust with the Queen.
I actually thought they could have removed the sex scenes entirely - or at least scaled them back to an R or NC-17 rating level - and it wouldn't have harmed the movie any.
I continue to be uncomfortable with what I see as the violence of male/male sexual encounters - it does not look enjoyable at all from a purely physical perspective although clearly hundreds of thousands of men would disagree with me, and that's fine...as for the scenes between Hong Lim and the Queen, I kept being distracted by the fact that their thighs were the same size, and then from there I would think - geez, she's got her face absolutely buried in his balls, I wonder what was going through her head at that moment? And darn...he really had her nipple in his mouth. Wonder what THAT's like in a room full of people?
I mean...it's hot because, you know, been there/done that so I know what I'm seeing feels like - but since I'm watching, I'm watching. Not feeling. I'm analyzing. I guess I'm not their target audience for that, LOL...but I did really like the movie, over all.
Now see, for the first time I felt that Hong Lim was being honest about his feelings towards the King - after all, he was taken as the king's companion from an early age with no choice. It was all he knew until his encounters with the Queen and the discovery of hetero-sex and real love. When he told the King that he never loved him, I believed it.
This why I have to give Song Ji-hyo credit - you KNOW that the vast majority of Korean men/boys have watched that movie just for the sex scenes with her. I love the way it's a total disconnect with all of her interactions on various shows she's on. In such an outwardly repressed society she's able to dance on both sides with total equanimity.
I really did like the movie, with the exception of the castration scene. That (for me) was way too much. But then again, I hate movies with violence or horror/slasher content.
I don't think he was IN love with the King - I think he could happily have never had sex with him again, although he liked it well enough when he didn't know any different - but he did LOVE him, and everything he did up until he fell for the Queen (which was the KING'S FAULT) he did out of love. At the end, when he realizes the King lied to him (and he knows why, already) - he turns to face him and dies with that single tear trickling down...it was because he loved him and he was sorry about all the terrible things that happened to all of them...and then the very end repeats their happiest moments together. They were the true love story, in my eyes.
Gotta say, Ju Jin Mo was awesome in this...he had me feeling for him even after he became this terrible, crazed person. It's the only thing I've ever seen him in.
I've just discovered a Korean drama download website. http://www.dramadownload.net. This is accessble to those of us living outside the US.
Does anyone have any opinion/experience of it? I'd appreciate your feedback.
Thanks
So, for those who are interested...I'm up to Episode 12 of MiSa and at this point, I no longer care about the times SJS stares off blankly into the distance and pretends it's acting, because when he does cry (and Lord, does he have reason) I cry right along with him.
I don't know if he snuck into me like someone said earlier or if I'm just beaten down by the pure misery of this poor guy's miserable existence (and his thrilled acceptance of any moment of happiness that does randomly come his way)...but my heart is breaking.
Don't know if you're going to catch this comment (OT is slowing down), but didn't you say that you were watching I'm Sorry But I Love You, somewhere up-thread? And you didn't know why you were still watching?
Think I figured it out.
Isn't the writer the same one who's writing A THOUSAND KISSES?!?!?
Someone over at the Soompi ATK mentioned it (okay, I admit it. I lurk over there to laugh at the constant fan outrage).
OMG - this writer has perfected being a total Black Hole of aggravating suckitude that you can't NOT watch. She's pure evil - a crack-whore trolling for victims...
:)
I finished MiSa. Never pay attention to writers or directors, so I don't know but the connection is interesting because I've been laughing at the ATK comments.
I can say this: by the end, I was completely onboard the Moo Hyuk train. I don't know if he got better at acting or I got better at reading his facial expressions (actually I do know - because I went back and looked at some earlier episodes - he got better, I'm not an idiot).
What a sad story! I did not reach the levels of 'I want to die WITH them' sorrow that I did with Sang Doo - and probably never will again with any other movie - but my heart broke in tiny pieces for at least a few hours yesterday.
The drama itself is kind of a WTF thing. Until the final few episodes, there's very little exposition. People do stuff, you aren't sure why, no one ever explains what they're thinking that would make them act the way they act. Some of the ways they act are insane.
Randomly with no real lead-in or development, Moo Hyuk has this thing going that's like Bad Guy, and the guy he pretends to be is even MORE wooden and ridiculous looking than he is, and yet he gets a girl to just up and leave her rich, adoring, cute (but kind of babyish) fiance based on a scarf and a rape-kiss in the elevator. Rich, cute, adoring boy's MOM is BOF Mom, too, so I had a hard time not automatically thinking she was evil when really, she was just clueless.
The last 4 or 5 episodes were definitely the payoff for my earlier pain. Idiots redeem themselves, So Ji Sub turns into someone I found myself literally praying to God for: Please, just let him have this one thing. Just this one thing he wants, he's been through SO MUCH.
"The drama itself is kind of a WTF thing. Until the final few episodes, there’s very little exposition. People do stuff, you aren’t sure why, no one ever explains what they’re thinking that would make them act the way they act. Some of the ways they act are insane."
Annnd that's the plot of ATK, to a Tee! Same writer, only apparently now she's a tad older and has become more Victorian in her views. Like in, has a bustle under her skirt, along with an iron-clad chastity belt with no key. And a sense of righteous moral indignation filled with K-trope.
Have you listened to the new podcast? If so, wanna take a wild guess at which part I truly enjoyed? Heh.
:)
May i be allowed to intrude and answer the podcast question ?
My guess is Innocent Solitary Kiss of Early Times versus Smoking Hot Kisses of Our Times...
No, no ! Wait ! I know ! The part about GHS acting right ? I know i'm right !! :).
It seems with ATK i've found my first k drama writer to blacklist even if my life is on the line. Just unbelievable, the Victorian reference is spot on : So true ! Is psychological torture of TV viewers legal in Korea ?
It was like an out-of-body experience to hear that pop up in the middle of the podcast - LOL
As for ATK - I'm gonna say 'two strikes and yer out' (not even going to go for #3) and avoid her, absolutely. The plot is just running amok - MamaDoormat now has some kind of fatal blood disease, and knowing that, BEGGED the OldToad to allow her to take care of him until he recovered.
Jo-mi is begging the OldToad to take Doormat back because she'll (Jo-mi) will divorce Ajusshi. Jo-Young continues in her weepy, sad ways and Won-bin is now certifiably catatonic from the neck up. I hate them all - and yet watch with glee. I am the pathetic one.... never will I get back these many hours wasted on this dreck. My hand to God, if I could understand a lot more Korean, I would SO be recapping this, snark and frustration abounding.
Cynthia, i prove you here you're not alone in your misery : You know six degrees of separation ?
Today, I decided to start watching the Vineyard Man, because of Oh Man Suk ( acting currently so well in What's Up and Wild Romance ). Apparently, half the cast of ATK has followed me there like a vicious little black cloud, including Old Toad, Eccentric Flower Dressed Ahjumma and Nice Glasses Ahjussi ( i've only seen first episode, so i fear for the rest... ). I think we don't know yet the full nuisance potential of ATK. We can't
escape !
Say with me : " When I walk in the valley of the shadow of the death, I fear no evil, because you are with me ... " And i'm not even christian...
Mystisith~ "the full nuisance potential of ATK." Omg - how funny and accurate a comment! You sure hit a trifecta over at VM.
Had to laugh with your description of flower-pants ajumma. Can you imagine signing a contract for 50 episodes of a character that can peel the enamel off your teeth just from the sound of her shrieky voice? It's so awful, it's fascinating to watch her. At least she's consistent. It really is so sad to know that they're all such good actors (some better than others) and stuck in this travesty? Commenters were talking about Kim So eun in the Rooftop Price post being cast as a lead. I love her, but if she doesn't wake up and get out of the extended drama rut, she's going to torpedo her career. She was under consideration for Princesses' Man and opted to do ATK?! Her next project better be juicy - she's in serious danger of being relegated to 2nd string status. She needs a change in management.
Shukmeister ~ You're welcome! We all need a few laughs every day - sometimes, horrible K-dramas are just the ticket! :)
I'm watching Dal Ja's Spring and How to be Perfect Neighbor. Has anyone else seen those?
Dal Ja is moving along, but I still don't see it's huge appeal. It's entertaining, and lee Min-ki is completely edible, but I don't feel drawn to marathon it.
Perfect Neighbor - So shoot me, I'm actually enjoying it. I like Park Shi-hoo's acting in ti so far (episode 6). He's smiled a few times and that's pretty darn adorable. The role doesn't call for much but severity and angst.
oh really? I think perfect neighbor is on my dramafever queue but it has such a going no where premise. but I'm in a pick-a-peck mood these days. I started watching park jung geum- woman of matchless beauty park jung geum and I really like it, but it's doing that taming thing with a really great female lead that I HATE! right now so I'm taking a break. I haven't seen dal ja's spring either but I am watching chae rim in good job, good job and that one also just started to bother me. I started white lies but I'm pausing because it seems like the mother is intent on grabbing a woman for her mentally retarded son and while I'm not really opposed to the idea of people faling love even in their case, I can't help thinking that mom is too ruthless.
Ya, I find my interest waning much more quickly lately. The one's I committed myself to recapping I will watch all the way through, but...I accidentally found out that Dal ja has some sort of time jump...ACK. The age difference thing is kinda killing me. he's 27, she's 33. its not that bad. get over it! The best thing I've watched lately was White Christmas. I devoured that - whole. I might have to go back and watch TPM.
I'm going to marathon White Christmas during my trip out of town tonight. I'll still be traveling when OT comes out next, but hopefully can pop in Saturday and give my two cents worth of opinion.
Has anyone who planned on going to Korea managed to get advice on visa questions? I've tried calling the Consulate in Chicago, but after going through the phone system I get one or two rings, then silence. After a few minutes I just hang up. I got a person last night, but it was after they closed, so she said she couldn't help me.
I should also mention: I'm looking for contact information for an American office. Although I suppose, I could send an email to any English speaking office.
Ambassador Sung Y. KIM
Physical address: Sejongno, Jongno-gu, Seoul 110-710
Mailing address: US Embassy Seoul, APO AP 96205-5550
Telephone: [82] (2) 397-4114
FAX: [82] (2) 738-8845
The State Department keeps an up-to-date list of anything regarding visas, travel safety, etc.:
Thanks, I'll take a look at these sites. My complication comes from the fact that my employment will be right up against the 90 day stay limit. I want to know if I try and take a vacation in Korea after my employment, if I have to leave the country and re-enter, or if I can just start being a tourist after my employment. And if I have to leave, can I just book a flight to Japan stay a day, and then come back to Korea as a tourist. Getting contact with the consulate in Chicago has proven to be quite a challenge.
Unfortunately it looks like the 90 day limit is a pretty hard cap. Tried sending an email to the US Embassy anyway. Hopefully I can at least go to Japan and re-enter as a tourist. Last time I went to Korea I wandered around aimlessly, this time someone has offered to be my tour guide, I want to take advantage of that as much as I can.

I love Kim Yoo Jung, she's a delight to watch. I have to say that Korean child actors are superb.
I'm also anxiously awaiting further episodes of History Of The Salaryman.
Lee Bum Soo's character is stealing the show imho.
It took me awhile to realize that Hong Soo Hyun was in The Princess' Man as well.

Mystisith
January 15, 2012 at 5:57 PM
OK cmrprindle, here we go :

1. Beautifully filmed
2. Completely tragic
3. Ju Jin Mo!!!!!! The King broke my heart, even when he turned into an ass of EPIC proportion.

So any way. I'm glad I stuck it out.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

:)

We can't
escape !

Perfect Neighbor - So shoot me, I'm actually enjoying it. I like Park Shi-hoo's acting in ti so far (episode 6). He's smiled a few times and that's pretty darn adorable. The role doesn't call for much but severity and angst.
