Park Ki-woong joins Bridal Mask
Park Ki-woong is keeping his schedule packed, what with him currently at work on the upcoming Full House 2 and now also confirming the KBS drama Bridal Mask, aka Gaksital. That’s the sageuk-hero period piece which stars Joo-won as the hero; Park will take on his opposition.
In the drama, Park will play Shunji, a Japanese martyr. Since the hero is a freedom fighter, naturally that makes them enemies during a volatile time — the 1930s — when Korea was struggling for independence from the Japanese occupation. The lead character embarks on his heroic exploits wearing a bridal mask, which gives him a dual identity; mild-mannered by day, badass by night.
According to Park’s reps, he decided to take the drama because he’d worked with director Yoon Sung-shik in the past on 2009’s smart revenge-caper thriller Story of a Man. I’d say that’s a good call; that drama was sharply directed and also marked Park’s career turning point when he shed his goofy, lightweight image and went all-in to play an autistic genius.
Park has really expanded his range since then, and while I’m not that excited to watch Full House 2, I just got a lot more interested in Bridal Mask. It airs in May.
