Here’s a look at the quirky new gallows-humor romantic comedy Neverending Story, starring Uhm Tae-woong and Jung Ryeo-won as two people who meet on the day they each get diagnosed with a terminal illness. How’s that for a meet-cute? With six months left to live, they decide, eh why not, and start to date… as they prepare to die. Their dates consist of shopping for coffins and burial clothes, and other hilariously dark non-datey activities, but their romance is every bit the traditional bickering cuteness.
Uhm Tae-woong plays a happy-go-lucky unemployed loser who can’t live without the lotto, and Jung Ryeo-won an uptight, exacting bank employee who can’t live without her diary. What cracks me up is that in the trailer, Uhm Tae-woong seems the closest to his real persona that I’ve ever seen (not counting 1 Night 2 Days, of course). And in fact, it seems so out of his normal wheelhouse that it seems like a part borne out of his 1N2D persona. His character is kind of a doofus, and really inexperienced at love, to the point that Jung Ryeo-won has to coach him on how to seduce her. Him: “Do you… not have to go h-home?” Her: “You have to MAKE me not want to go home! Cry and beg, or jump into the ocean or something!” Ha.
The trailer starts out all melodramatic as they find out they’re going to die, and then immediately undercuts the drama with offbeat charm and flirty banter. (And yes, that’s a cameo by Cha Tae-hyun as a quack palm reader.) Uhm Tae-woong squeeing over being called “oppa” is pretty much the cutest thing ever. The poster’s kind of awesome too — who ever thought two people climbing into a coffin together could be so hot?
I love it when a story takes common melodrama fodder and then tells it as a comedy, and even better is the idea to take two drama-heavy actors and make them light and funny. Morbid AND hilarious? Why, oh why can’t this be a sixteen-episode drama?
Neverending Story hits theaters January 19.

What I love even more than trailer and posters is the way the movie is being promoted (all that wedding ceremony, proposals, holding hands…) And of course I adore how TaeWoong’s movie character seems to be so like him in real life ^^

When I 1st saw Uhm Tae-woong in something that was from a no. of years ago, I thought he was unremarkable when it came to the looks dept. – a little above avg. w/ a hint of dorkiness.
He is definitely one of those guys who has improved w/ age.
This looks like it could be lots of fun, and can see myself busting a gut over it. But I could also see this being super sad, a la Hello Ghost. I busted a gut and tear ducts for that film.

Another one whose a little bummed this isn’t a drama instead of a movie. Still, this seems like a pretty great depature from their usual wheels! Love to see them both in a dark rom-com. Granted, Jung Ryeo-won I’m kind of already seein’ her in that thanks to Salaryman :p. Anyways, I agree from the trailer we get is seems like we’re seeing more of the 1N2D flavor of Uhm Tae-woong. It’s a quirky way to treat a very emotional subject… I’d love to watch it but I bet I will cry even if it’s masquerading as a comedy. UTW is such a good actor and I’ve never seen JRW since MNIKSS. I’ll watch out for its posting in the web.

I was watching half way of Penny Pinchers until a family emergency came up. I haven’t touched it ever since, like a week already. Song Joong-Ki totally outshines his leading lady in this one. Ahh~ I hope when I re-watch it I won’t get disappointed as You’re My Pet.
On the upside, Cha Tae-hyun’s Champ was good as expected. I knew he’s a bit small for guy but I wasn’t sure he could pull off his act as a jockey. I know he’s not that petite as real riders. I was pretty impressed how the movie offered me a fitting illusion to that good outcome.
