Love Rain: Episode 1

There’s plenty of love and plenty of rain in KBS’s new-vintage drama offering, Love Rain, which enjoyed some considerable hype before its release due to its popular stars. It’s not out to transcend its genre, and works well to deliver an atmospheric, youthful vibe and a core love story with all its requisite entanglements. There might be as much to like about it as there is to dislike, and this drama seems like one of the more polarizing options – either you enjoy the throwback to the season dramas of yore, or you don’t. I found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would, but maybe I’m just in love with how snazzy it all looks.

EPISODE 1 RECAP

We open on a college campus in the 1970s as two students pass each other for the first time. As he sees her approaching we hear him say in amazement, “One, two, three. In just three seconds, I fell in love.”

The soothing sounds of an acoustic guitar segue us over a view of an evergreen campus and into a cafe, where a bespectacled KIM CHANG-MO (Seo In-guk) sings for the restaurant-goers. There’s a DJ/MC for the stage proceedings, a smooth-talker that plays the well-known theme song from the movie Love Story.

The song continues to play as our 1970s hero (there will be two versions of him), SEO IN-HA (Jang Geun-seok), sees the girl he fell in love with sitting outside his art studio window. Grabbing his supplies in a rush and never letting his eyes stray too far from her, he takes up residence by the window so he can draw her.

Back in the cafe, the DJ/MC LEE DONG-WOOK (Kim Shi-hoo) joins Chang-mo and another girl at a table to discuss an upcoming fight he’s scheduled with In-ha. Why? Because of a girl that In-ha claims he loved at first sight.

They’re all friends of In-ha’s, and no one can believe it – they’ve never even seen In-ha with a girl before. In fact, put him on a deserted island with a girl and he wouldn’t even talk to her. Dong-wook just shakes his head and attempts to convince them that the story is true.

In-ha continues to sketch the girl of his dreams, but becomes so engrossed that she’s gone by the time he looks up. He bolts out of the studio to find her, and eventually runs into her (literally), which sends the contents of her purse flying.

He helps her pick everything up, and thinks to himself while he looks at her, “All of a sudden, my heart started beating like crazy.” He awkwardly attempts conversation but backs out at the last moment, unable to speak when he’s so flustered.

Everyone stops for a campus-wide pledge to the flag. In-ha takes the time to try and edge closer to her, staring like a puppy. While the pledge calls for devotion to the glory of the country, In-ha thinks that funnily enough, he can’t help but feel that the reason he was born was to devote himself to love her.

She leaves right after the pledge, though In-ha finds a diary she accidentally left behind. Here’s where we learn her name, written on the inside cover – KIM YOON-HEE (Yoon-ah).

Dong-wook challenges In-ha to a game of tennis, with their friends watching from the sidelines. The girl in their group, BAEK HYE-JUNG (Son Eun-seo) cheers for In-ha on the basis that Dong-wook always tries to take what’s In-ha’s. In this case, it’s a girl. (Seriously? Dong-wook already seems like a crappy friend.)

Girls are screaming over the two good-looking men going at each other in good sportsmanship, and Yoon-hee happens to pass by. Any joy she feels at learning In-ha’s name from a friend disappears when she realizes her diary has gone missing.

In-ha sees her go, and in yet another inner monologue he says to himself, “On that day when I missed her so many times, I was already in love.” (I’m really glad for your love, In-ha, but we geddit.)

He makes it home by nightfall and shamelessly opens Yoon-hee’s diary. Along with all her various entries is a pressed flower with a famous quote from Love Story: “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” Her parents loved to watch the movie, but they’ve passed away. She still doesn’t understand the meaning of the quote.

Back on campus the next day, a nervous In-ha waits with Yoon-hee’s diary in the hopes of spotting her. Just as he puts it away she approaches him and asks for it, but preempts him returning it by whispering her hopes aloud that she hopes no one will read it. Probably feeling guilty that he’s read it, In-ha doesn’t end up returning the journal.

His friends join him just as Yoon-hee leaves, but she’s waylaid by a man who suffered her rejection and doesn’t want to accept it. The boys are gobsmacked over her beauty and ask Hye-jung if she’s in the same class – and it’s with a scoff that she says yes – but she doesn’t know her well because she hates girls like Yoon-hee. Clearly she’s used to the attention Yoon-hee receives from the opposite sex, and no girl is without her envies.

Yoon-hee is known as the class “Madonna,” another term that sends Hye-jung sulking. For everything that is praised about Yoon-hee, Hye-jung has a return. (Chang-mo: “She looks so innocent and classy!” Hye-jung: “And stuck-up.”)

The boys even appreciate her nice but firm rejection to the man who even got on his knees to beg her. Dong-wook looks intrigued, and asks, “Three seconds?” Oy. He knows without In-ha telling him that this is the girl he fell in love with, but it looks like he isn’t going to care one bit.

In-ha reads Yoon-hee’s diary in class and finds out that one of her desires is to see the movie Love Story, which is making a return to the theaters. He finds out other predictably adorable things from her past – like the habit of applying saliva to a bruise because her grandma used to do it. And of course, whatever hurt her always healed because it was Grandma’s love.

Her inner monologue/diary entry continues, “Someday, I want to fall in love like the actors in the movie, and like my parents.”

In-ha reads her diary over and over, wanting to know everything about her. The entries lead him to a movie theater the next day to buy tickets for Love Story, and a library to find her father’s favorite book, “The Little Prince.”

He’s unaware that Yoon-hee’s in the library, and their eyes meet from two different sides of the shelf. In-ha’s flustered and bumps into a book cart – and when the librarian asks if he wants to check out “The Little Prince,” he loses his nerve and denies it right in front of Yoon-hee.

Her friend sees her with In-ha and immediately sets to questioning Yoon-hee – does she not know him and his two friends? She goes into descriptions, with Dong-wook being a womanizing med-student with rich parents. Next, Chang-mo, a country boy with a golden voice.

Most importantly, though, there’s In-ha – a mysterious art student with a soft kind of charisma, a winner of numerous painting contests and the son of an insanely rich family, to boot. But the rumor is that he has a fiancée.

In-ha interrupts their conversation, having unwittingly overheard. He informs them that he doesn’t in fact have a fiancée before nervously scooting out of the room.

It’s raining outside (we all knew this would happen, it was only a matter of time), and both In-ha and Yoon-hee are caught without an umbrella. After a few moments of awkward silence In-ha instructs her to wait while he rushes inside the school to scrounge around from an umbrella.

He runs back outside, umbrella in hand, and unfolds it in a grand romantic gesture… except that it’s broken, and folds sadly in on itself on top of his head. Ha. The only way to keep it up is for him to hold the umbrella near the top, which is enough to cover her but leaves half of him prime for rain-soaking.

As they walk together she brings up the topic of the fiancée, and In-ha assures her that it’s all untrue. She seems happy to hear it, although she worries once she sees him getting rained on. He assures her that he’s okay in that shy manner of his, and after a small back-and-forth she tells him to come in closer so the umbrella covers more of them.

He does, even though he seems nervous each time they accidentally brush against each other. Aww, cute.

By the end of their walk he’s pretty much only holding the umbrella over her while he gets soaked from head to toe. They share a common affinity for rain and feelings, and she shares a stanza from “The Little Prince” that talks about love having two faces of happiness and sadness. She thinks love and rain are similar in that regard.

When he claims he has to leave Yoon-hee stops him to ask when she should return the umbrella. It takes In-ha all his courage to ask her what she’s doing on Sunday – and he suggests going to see Love Story, all while trying not to seem like he hasn’t read her diary.

She’s shocked, because it just makes him seem more in tune with her feelings. She agrees to the date with a shy smile, and In-ha giddily runs off alone in the rain. He cheers to himself once he’s alone. (Aww. Resistance to this kind of cute is futile.)

Dong-wook is waiting at the same bus stop as Yoon-hee, and immediately starts laying on the charm despite her seeming indifference. She thinks the first time she saw him was on the tennis court – but he corrects her in that this isn’t their first meeting.

He acts hurt when she doesn’t seem to remember, but recovers quickly when he notices her looking at the poster for Love Story. He asks if she wants to see it together with him, earning a puzzled response in return. He backs off enough to tell her that if they see each other again, it’s a date. Regardless of whether she’s explicitly agreed or not.

Still soaked from the rain and filled with artistic inspiration, In-ha sets to painting a portrait of Yoon-hee. (Ah, so that’s why he was in a rush.) Dong-wook back in the cafe, dedicating a song to all those who have fallen in love on a rainy day like him.

Dong-wook finds In-ha composing a song later, and has brought drinks to share. He guesses right that In-ha is composing because of “Three Seconds,” the girl he loves. Dong-wook is happy to report that he’s found his own “Three Seconds”, and we flashback to Dong-wook’s first meeting with Yoon-hee (the one she didn’t remember) at the bus stop.

She’d noticed his finger was bleeding, and helped him to place a bandaid. Because she reminded him of his mother, he fell in love instantly.

He notices the movie tickets In-ha’s laid out to dry and notes that it’s such a strange thing – he got rejected by his “Three Seconds” for the same movie. (And neither of them thinks that any two “Three Seconds” are the same.) Dong-wook wonders why that quote so popular with girls, you know, the one about love means never having to say you’re sorry?

“I don’t know,” In-ha replies thoughtfully. “Because love comes from your heart. You know each other’s hearts. I guess you don’t need to say it.”

Later that night In-ha reads over Yoon-hee’s diary, learning about all the girlishly adorable things she likes like libraries and [insert random generic interest here].

Dong-wook has decided that he isn’t going to wait for fate to bring him and Yoon-hee together, so instead he drags In-ha and Chang-mo along for a sogaeting (a group blind date). Some hints that Chang-mo drops leads In-ha’s face to drop as he slowly comes to the realization that Dong-wook’s “Three Seconds” is the same as his.

This is only reaffirmed when Hye-jung arrives with Yoon-hee in tow. She’s surprised to see In-ha, who can only look away and fidget the moment he sees her.

Upon seeing Yoon-hee, Dong-wook is all like, Oh what a coincidence that we ran into each other againlet’sgoseeamoviedatemealready. But they’ve still got the whole group date to sit through, which includes listening to one girl talk about her prestigious family lineage.

She’s clearly got her sights set on In-ha, and exclaims that she wants to be the wife of an artist (hint, hint). In-ha just looks even more uncomfortable than usual as a result.

After Yoon-hee introduces herself, Hye-jung asks about the movie. Dong-wook doesn’t give Yoon-hee a chance to answer as he says that they’d practically promised to see the movie together if they ever ran into each other again.

In order to score points, Dong-wook steals the romantic lines In-ha spouted earlier about love coming from the heart. This does earn him points, because Yoon-hee is touched.

As an icebreaker, all the men secretly put down an item of theirs, to be paired with whichever girl picks their item. When it comes to Yoon-hee, she’s faced with the choice of a charcoal pencil or a bandaid – and she picks the pencil.

In-ha’s face lights up – that’s his! – but Dong-wook kicks him under the table and exclaims, “That’s mine! I guess we really are fated.” Urgh.

Yoon-hee and In-ha can only exchange glances, the distance between them growing by the moment.

In-ha ends up taking a backseat while Dong-wook romances Yoon-hee with all the things she likes – baby’s breath (the flowers, not the actual breath of babies, which would not surprise me in her case), classical music. He tells himself that this is now the girl his friend likes, and only watches from the sidelines as she’s slowly stolen away.

He thinks to himself that he was happy because of her, and sad too. (Just like love, and rain. Love rain! It all makes sense now!)

The friend that had her eye on In-ha, HWANG IN-SOOK (Hwang Bo-ra) shares her disappointment in In-ha’s flightiness while shopping with Hye-jung at a boutique. She gets the sense that In-ha’s avoiding them – is he doing it because he thinks Yoon-hee likes him?

Yoon-hee finds herself unintentionally eavesdropping on their conversation, until she’s caught by In-sook. Whoops.

I was wondering how Dong-wook found out about everything Yoon-hee liked – it turns out that In-ha was enough of a doormat good friend to tell him everything he needed to know out of what he gleaned from her diary. Dong-wook asks his friend for more hints, because he’s feeling like he has to cement something with Yoon-hee before an upcoming festival or risk being friend zoned.

“Don’t try to do something,” In-ha advises. “Just show your heart.” Dong-wook: “So what is that?” You literally see In-ha facepalm.

Yoon-hee and the girls emerge from the boutique, but they’re in for a scary surprise. (The serious musical cue got a good laugh out of me. It can’t be explained, you have to see it.) There are policemen nearby with rulers and scissors – rulers for skirt length on women, and scissors for hair length on men. They’re literally curb-checking anyone that walks by for inappropriate dressing, and cutting hair in the street if they deem it too long.

In-sook worries about being caught for her short skirt, but thinks ahead and unrolls it so it’s less offensively short. Hye-jung marvels at her resourcefulness and wonders if In-sook ever thought to apply her brain to her studies as much as her skirts.

Alone with Yoon-hee, Hye-jung asks how she feels about Dong-wook. Yoon-hee admits that she really liked it when he repeated In-ha’s lines (she doesn’t know that, of course) about the meaning behind the Love Story quote. “I liked it because I thought he was like me,” she says. Oh darlin’, if only you knew.

Hye-jung is relieved to hear it, because she was worried that Yoon-hee might have something going on with In-ha. But now that she doesn’t, Hye-jung is free to admit that she likes In-ha. Yoon-hee looks troubled, now finding herself put into a similar situation as In-ha was with Dong-wook.

We get a funny, albeit meaningless, foray into Chang-mo’s life. He’d been stealing staged fruit meant for still-life artists to paint, and when he’s caught by one of the students he’s forced to repay his debt by posing in the nude for the art students. Haha.

Chang-mo is shocked to learn that women also get to pose nude, and surmises that In-ha must have some nude paintings, then. So he goes through In-ha’s locker for some porn and ends up finding paintings of Yoon-hee instead.

Dong-wook has no idea that Yoon-hee was In-ha’s first love, and so he thinks In-ha’s recent ire is directed at his playboy attitude. He assures his friend that he’s serious about Yoon-hee – but by the way, whatever happened to In-ha’s “Three Seconds?”

“I gave up on her,” In-ha replies. When asked why, he simply says that it’s because she has someone else. Dong-wook is aghast – so he just gave up without a fight? Just like that? (For the first time, I don’t hate what comes out of Dong-wook’s mouth.)

In-ha’s passive nature comes to the fore as he tells him that he didn’t have the will to fight. He’s actually jealous of Dong-wook’s ability to be straightforward about loving someone, which Dong-wook doesn’t understand.

Hye-jung and Yoon-hee come across Dong-wook and In-ha, the latter of whom immediately excuses himself. Hye-jung calls him out on his behavior, claiming that the rumors must be true about him specifically avoiding Yoon-hee. In-ha doesn’t know what to say and looks like he’s about to cry at the thought of confronting his feelings, so Yoon-hee excuses herself from the awkward situation.

Alone with In-ha, Hye-jung asks if it’s true. In-ha denies it by saying that he doesn’t have anything against Yoon-hee, and manages to escape in order to brood.

It’s raining that night, and In-ha finds Yoon-hee taking shelter beneath the same building that they first shared an umbrella at. She claims that she’s waiting for a friend, but In-ha hands over his umbrella and tells her to just go.

He asks her why she hasn’t come out with them recently. She grows uncomfortable, and admits that she’s been staying away because she thought he was avoiding his friends because of her.

In-ha tells her in a completely straight tone that her worries are unfounded – in fact, he’s really happy things with her and Dong-wook are working out. She’s quick to counter that her and Dong-wook aren’t official yet.

So In-ha rephrases what he said, in that he hopes they’ll work out together then. Yoon-hee looks disheartened, since that wasn’t the answer she wanted to hear, and that’s how they part.

He watches her walk away from the window of the art studio, and collects all his paintings of her. “I thought that it could change. If only I change, I thought that we could all get along,” he inner-monologues to himself, as he shuts the paintings away in a locker.

COMMENTS

So I’ll be the first to admit that I came into this show with pretty negative expectations, only to actually be pleasantly surprised by the end. Unfortunately I’m a pretty cheap drama date when it comes to good cinematography, so it didn’t help when the opening shots of the drama were bathed in warm sunlight and just plain gorgeous. That campus looked like paradise.

It isn’t only that the shots were beautiful, but they worked really well in establishing a definite youthful atmosphere, filled with all the whimsy of young love in bloom. The color palette was great, the costumes a treat, the premise and story easy to digest. Guy meets girl, guy loses girl, guy becomes a noble idiot, cue angst.

Granted, I’m coming to Love Rain from a fairly fresh perspective, in that I’ve only seen one of the previous season dramas that gave the PD such widespread fame. Even without seeing his other work I’m well aware that nothing about this story is really new, and there’s nothing particularly exciting going on. That all sounds like points against this drama so I’m having trouble explaining the simple fact that I enjoyed the hour despite all the qualifiers. I wasn’t glued to the screen, but it was an easy watch.

It’s sort of funny that our two lead characters are the ones who seemed to talk the least, and looking back, I can’t really remember the sound of Yoon-hee’s voice. I find that most of the concerns I have (like whether we’re going to be stuck with two shy people for an entire show) are addressed in the promotional materials – we know that we’re seeing the parents of the look-alike children who will develop a relationship in the present, and who are described as opposites of their parents. This wait-and-see syndrome happens to me with dramas that spend time on their child actors – I end up wanting to stick around just to see how things will change once the adults (in this case, the children) show up.

I actually liked Jang Geun-seok in this role, since his past few projects were pretty disheartening. (You’re My Pet, I’m looking at you.) His character may be infuriating in that you wish he’d just stand up for himself, but he as an actor is not, and was believable as an endearingly vulnerable artist. He’s lacking a spine, sure, but it’s kind of nice that he’s not a Douchey McDoucherton. I tended to feel sorry for him, even when he was being a noble idiot. I can’t even be mad at the noble idiocy, because with this PD, it’s just expected.

As for Yoon-ah, jury is still out. She’s serviceable in a role that requires very little of her so far, and to be fair, there isn’t all that much to do with her character that a more seasoned actress could have done (so far). She was written as a beautiful wallflower, and she did her part. Hopefully she’ll get more things to do later, other than liking poetry and listening to classical music. Some more lines wouldn’t hurt, unless there’s a reason why she gets so few of them.

All in all, the production feels assured and my initial misgivings were slightly assuaged with the surprisingly palpable sense of tone. I’m curious to see how we move to the present, and hope that with the time skip we’ll never have to hear about Love Story again. But I’m probably getting my hopes up too high on that one.

Starting off, I only wanted to watch this show because of the beautiful cinematography. It gives off an old school feeling which I always go crazy for. A few days back, I heard that this drama has debuted therefore, I went to check it out. The first episode was quite okay, I enjoyed it. Then there comes the second episode, which made me enjoy the drama even more. I think many of you may find the drama boring and slow-moving. But isn't it what 1970s are about? Everyone lives a simple life therefore the slow paced. People call Yoon Hee and In Ha cowards because they wouldn't dare stand up for their love. If you ever think that way, I suggest you to watch the episode 3 preview and I say you'd change your mind. Love Rain was slow moving in the first two episodes but I ensure you it'll become definitely improve.

Thank you, HeadsNo2, for kindly recapping this episode. Hope you will continue to recap the whole drama. ;)

I was born in 1970 and thus grew up in the 70s and watching this drama brings back so many sweet and heartwarming memories of that era.

I think the commentors who have given many negative comments about this drama being numbingly boring and Yoona's acting being wooden and uninspiring have missed the point of the drama.

With the advent of science and technology and the break-neck pace of life in the 21st century, the simple, gentle, calm and restraint way of life of the 70s is simply lost to the people of today's generation.

The present generation's obsession with everything FAST, even SUPER FAST - instant gratification, instant results, instant food, instant love, in short, instant everything, has made them impatient and intolerant of anything that naturally takes time to develop and reach its conclusions. Anything less than fast is undesirable and thus unappreciated.

If we learn to slow down and stop and smell the roses, so to speak, we may learn to appreciate more of what life has to offer. Something worth having is never easy to achieve. And, easy come, easy go.

The first 2 episodes' heartwarming tone and texture resonates with me and I hope it will be able to sustain that till the end. And I hope it will be able to capture some of the hearts and minds of the viewers of the present generation and convert them from hating it to liking it.

As for the Yoona's acting, I am not bothered too much by it because I have seen her acting in other dramas before and so have no expectations regarding her acting and also because to me she has done a good job so far, especially if we were to consider the possible constraints of her characterisation by the writing and directing.

Besides, what does berating or criticising her acting do, really. except making ourselves angry, frustrated and overall so unhappy? She is already IN the drama and if her acting gets on our nerves so much, we should just STOP watching the drama altogether but refrain from crushing her to a pulp because by doing that we are simply being mean-spirited and unforgiving.

well said. this drama is unique and has its own class. I really love this drama. ok, i'll share my opinion here as a hollywood movie lover also. i prefer 'atonement' to 'mission impossible'. thus i also prefer 'love rain' to 'fashion king'. that's how i feel about this drama. and i'm amazed by JKS' acting ability to portray In ha perfectly, as we know he's used to have the role as bad boy, flower boy, band leader or other fierce characters. i love him he looks sexy as a noble idiot, the sexiest noble idiot i've ever seen :)

Thank you for your kind comment. ;)

And I agree with you about JGK's acting. He is able to portray someone who is falling in love for the first time with an intriguing mix of sweetness, innocence and sexiness, on top of the other characters he has acted as in previous dramas/films (as you have mentioned them, Dom).

This time he is a sweet, innocent, sexy noble idiot in the first part of this drama. He will take on a different persona once he becomes the son in a different era - a persona similar to perhaps his characters in You're Beautiful/Mary Stayed Out All Night.

I am looking forward to the transformation of Yoona's character from 70's Yoonhee to the daughter.

Agree! The drama is just of another class or how say...It is just different from others! And the feelings it brings....also strange. I'll feel like I'll remember the story it tells, the love they describe and how we should treasure those pure loves!

Very well said! I totally agree with you, especially how everyone now wants everything FAST! The 70s was really mellow and slow and I think that the director really captured that essence in this drama. The scenes are so beautiful! And I honestly don't find the drama slow at all!

Aside from the colors, I absolutely adore JKS in this drama. I've never realized that he has such an adorable smile until now; his shy smiles are so cute! And with Yoona, I'm not saying this because she's my bias; but even though her acting is a bit bland, her character is written to be bland. Women were more restrained back then. You can definitely see that she changes the way that she talks in order to sound more "ladylike".

I bet more than half of those who said that this drama sucks, is boring, monotonous, and many other negative adjectives out there, haven't actually seen it. Why don't you guys try watching Love Rain without all these PREJUDICE like HeadsNo2 did? You might actually find yourself liking it. I know I did.

About In Ha's character being a noble idiot, I would hate him myself IF the setting of the drama wasn't in the 70s. People back then weren't as straightforward, outgoing, liberated, etc. as they are now, in our times (with the exception of Dong Wook's character, he's bold all right!). I find this drama beautiful because of that (cinematography is a given for this director ^^ i also love the sceneries in Spring Waltz). The innocence of the main characters when it comes love is something that's rarely found in modern times, and in modern dramas as well. Thus, I found myself attracted to this aspect of Love Rain. I guess, it is just hard for people to see beauty in the smallest things, not with people who wants everything fast-paced at least.

I wouldn't know how to comment on Yoona's acting since I haven't seen her previous works. But as of now, I think she's doing a wonderful on portraying Yoon Hee since it is what her character calls for. We'll just see later how fares with her portrayal of Yoon Hee's daughter.

Love Rain is so underated just because it has a "typical storyline"

the only thing I don't like in this drama is the idea of falling in love in 3 seconds. If In Ha thinks it is love AT FIRST SIGHT, then I think it is just a crush.

I agree with you. Falling in love in 3 seconds, in reality it doesn't last. its a crush, a physical admiration. Love is much deeper.

The synopsis of this drama says that it is "pure love". I disagree, pure love is unconditional regardless of strengths and weaknesses of the person. Falling in love in 3 seconds, is for me, an insult to "pure love". the writer's idea of a pure love is falling in love in 3 seconds? that's instant love...like instant coffee?

I don't think so! I love my husband right from the first time I met him! Maybe for the first time, we think we just like or have strange feelings about the other but we gradually realize that is love from the beginning....

We still have a happy family until now with 2 children after more than 10 years since the first time we met!

Some of us may not believe there is a love like in this drama but yes, it is true! I'm of 80s and love like that still happens so why not, there was a love like that in the 70s?

It's not a crush, it is love feeling for the first time and it improves through knowing each other....After a time, you know you are really in love and being together make you unable to forget and so your love is deeper and deeper by time!

I think this happens most to first love.

Nice to hear about your blissful marriage, put God in the center and it'll be even stronger",)

I still am young and have no personal experiences about these things therefore I am not trying prove or disprove anything. I was just saying that I think a crush is often for "love at first sight". One thing I know for sure is that love is the most abused and misused word.

I agree with what Nanako said in one of her comments below (112). Love knows no reason. If you "fall in love at first sight" what do you think caught your sight??? Wouldn't it be his/her physical appearance? physique? fashion sense? and many other superficial reasons? It surely wouldn't be the positive traits of that person because that's something you'll have to discover yourself. Love is something that develops over time and may come as a surprise. The ONLY "love at first sight" I know and believe in is when a parent first looks upon his/her newborn child.

0

I believe in love at first sight. As I'm my hubby's love at first sight (well, according to him...:)) but he proves it till now after 8 years marriage. He proves that it's not only a crush. Well, maybe it WAS a crush at first, but then it developed into true love. Thus I believe in In Ha's 3-sec-love. Love at first sight also needs fate to help it develop. So pls enjoy the feeling of love at first sight or first love or crush-developed-into-pure-love in Love Rain. I feel so sad after the 70s part ended, and I definitely need some time to overcome my missing-In Ha- feeling

0

IT WAS a crush at first.",) i don't think there's anyone who would feel unconditional love for someone whom they just met. The sacrifices your husband can do for you now, aren't something he would do when your relationship was still young.. ^^

@personainnominatum, I think it's not fair that you are labeling dom's husband's feelings as crush. Everybody has a story of their own. To dismiss his feelings for his wife as a crush when he just met her was, dare I say, a little arrogant. Maybe you don't believe in love at first sight. But that doesn't mean that it don't happen to others. By the way, lots of men can sacrifice for their love in the beginning but not after some time. And I've seen too many cases of unconditional love (which was not love at first sight) in the early years of a relationship but which erodes after many years of marriage. Are we to dismiss that those are not love in the earlier part of the relationship?

In the preview of ep3, In Ha finds the courage to tell Yoon He how he really feels and they'll be together. I think it is the diary (which helps In Ha get closer to Yoon Hee) that will cause them to split up. Maybe Yoon Hee will think that everything In Ha is a lie.

Watched episodes 1 and 2. Cinematography, and costume design are very good. Script and actors, passable. The story is very very predictable..

Am I going to watch the next episodes? Sometimes...since the script is so predictable.

In these two episodes, acting of Yoona and JKS are at par with each other. Yoona improved a "bit" compared to her previous dramas, and JKS digress a "lot" compared to his previous dramas. I don't know whether that's intentional on JKS part so that he and yoona will be at same level of acting or its the PD's instructions so that he'll not overshadow Yoona with his acting. I actually watched because I miss JKS acting, but it seems he lost it -ex: his acting eyes and gestures (even without words) in YB, even his back was acting in YB - or is it just what it should be as they are supposed to be portrayed. I don't know. If I grade his and Yoona's acting in these 2 episodes, I will give them both a grade of 5.

I would agree that JKS is not at his best in these 2 eps and i don't know the reason.

He mentioned in his interview that as an actor, he needs to trust the direction and instructions given by the director. And PD Yoon highly praised him for able to act exactly the way he wanted In Ha to be. So i am not sure if that is the product of him portraying the way PD Yoon wanted or just that he is not into this character as yet.

However to rate him as same level as Yoona is way too harsh. He is still obviously a stronger actor than Yoona.

I see some clips of the next eps and he seems better. I think he will perform better when his new character appears. Looking forward to see him act with the veteran actors.

Agree! If you watched all Jang Geun Suk's dramas, this one is quite different and I am appreciated that he changed himself in every drama. All roles are different. That's his improvement and make new in every role he plays. For this particular drama, he changed successfully to a very kind, shy, sweet, sometime idiot....totally escape from his previous roles.
When the modern part of the drama comes, you may meet another Jang Geun Suk. He can change himself through characters. He is professional and excellent in acting for the role itself (not for him). The only similar character I found in his every role is that he has an artistic soul and always uses his eyes for acting. Not every young actor can do that.
I VOTE FOR JANG GEUN SUK'S GOOD ACTING

I am so happy after watching both episodes! I am not one to start watching a drama while it's still airing since I don't like to wait for next episodes. However, this is so awesome! It reminds me of previous great love dramas and a check on wiki shows that it's the same director and screenwriter as Autumn in My Heart and Winter Sonata.

Wow what can I say. A standard weakness in Korean dramas in recent years is that there are plenty of loopholes in stories and editing can be downright disgraceful but I'm happy that up to episode 2 this drama is showing none of that.

I'm gleeful to await episode 3 while for those who don't like this, stay with Dream High or Greatest Love or whatever. For me, at least I see a glimmer of hope that this drama can bring back the high standard of some Korean shows in yesteryear.

I agree with post 105 of personainnominatum. From comments on this blog alone you can see there's many who blindly follows - I've noticed it for awhile. Say something negative first and many will follow because negative is 'cool'. On other hand, it's hilarious how some bad dramas can become 'fabulous' just because of such noises too.

It's true that people react and think very differently in the 70s and even a decade after. To expect a character to act like oneself is well, ignorance and obnoxious at best. This applies even if the character is from the present. No two person are alike. If one thinks a character should behave in a certain way, he should not even be watching a show about the story of another person.

And oh, the 3 seconds thing. I am a believer that love knows no reasons. And I am one who fell in love at first sight. And my husband too. And we are happily together after many years. He won't be able to tell you why he fell for me at first sight and me too. But precisely that's why I think our love is purer than those with conditions like 'he has to be 1.8m, blue eyes blond hair, doctor, kind, loving, likes children' bulls.

Thank you! more than getting irritated at people who blindly follows, i really don't like it when people only count the negative things. There's beauty everywhere if you look close enough. Though, in this drama, I don't think you have to dig deep to see the beauty of it.

I agree with what you said. LOVE KNOWS NO REASON. But only up to that. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything. I just want to share my point of view.",)

I understand, personainnominatum, that of course you are not picking a fight. I am happy to read your reply.

If one falls in love after discovering another's positive traits, wouldn't that be a reason to love? And after falling in love by knowing these traits, say, if you discover some unpleasant things about the person, would then the love be diminished?

I am not discounting love that is grown. No, not at all. I think there's different ways a person can fall in love. And for people to love another due to growing feelings, I believe, is one of the most common ways to fall in love and is to be respected.

However, falling in love at first sight need not be due to superficial reasons too - I am a testimony to that. I have no outer beauty to attract instant love (lol too bad my inner 'beauty' is questionable too).

Maybe, it's affinity. Or there may just be such a thing as fate.

Sometimes I wonder about the word 'fall' as in 'fall in love'. What an appropriate word to describe the feeling - at least to me. No one takes his time to fall isn't it? It's normally out of the blue, in an instant swoop.

lol you can see I must be a diehard romantic.

I think you can't really say when the feeling of love really begins.. it's just like a magic you feel in an instant with a certain person.. nobody can really judge what the person feels at the moment if it is love, crush, infatuation or whatever feeling it should be.. one thing for sure all people fell in love in different situation..

I LIKE THE DRAMA! I don't know why the rating is so low and some people can't feel the love story. This may be just a very very odd and simple story to the young people but this is just typical and classical love feelings. It is not yet a moving story or a very sad or something huge but the feelings...Yes! the feelings of love is just simple like that. I love it!

I don't like Yoona before but she acts well in this series. Jang Geun Suk is good as always. He feels it, feels the love even though it's hard for young guys to understand how older people could love each other in just some seconds and how they treasure that love.....
It is not quick and complicated love or not a love that needs too many events or experiences to be called love! It is just PURE LOVE!
The scenes are so romantic, so bright and beautiful! Because it contains love and feelings, the natural scenes are just like that...pure and pretty!
The story line is ok until now!
I hope people love the drama too!
What a outstanding drama among today's quick dramas!

Ep 3 made me ask for more! I'm not going to say this is the best drama of this year because if the drama is consistent till the end of the show, I'm going to say it's going to be one of my favorite korean dramas Of All Time. It is that good. I feel sorry for people who don't get the show, because this is really excellent. Story-telling, acting, cinematography, scores etc all are above average to what you watch of most Korean dramas.

Of course if your idea of a good drama is one that involves plenty of plot or action, you will be disappointed. This is a love story. And it's not instant noodle love. This is a love story that moves the heart gently and subtly. I won't be surprised if later on in the show viewers will shed a lot of tears but as of now it's really bittersweet. You'll feel your heart constantly being tugged at, your emotions being gently pulled.

I'm actually a little apprehensive of ep 4. Afterall till now it's so romantic and I'm not getting enough of the 70s love story. Not sure if ep 4 will make a turn in the general mood and style of the drama - I hope not. But I do have confidence in the director and screenwriter. Just hoping the bad rating will not cause the production team to turn the later episodes to the general conveyor belt bad productions that you see so often nowadays.

Don't know what went wrong with the viewership in South Korea but I'm going to take a chance and bet that this will be a big hit in Japan.

@koreandramalover, I agree with you. This drama is slow (but not draggy), it's setup in the 70s and it teaches us to appreciate things - to let it develop; unlike the modern world when everything is fast, instant & quick.

I heard that many variety shows / dramas which involve idols usually have less viewers in Korea; which explains the low rating.

@LeiDiAngelo, if you are wondering why it's 'hyung' and not 'oppa', well from what I know the term 'oppa' only became trendy for addressing a closer male (such as boyfriend, close buddy etc besides brother) from the 1990s. Before that the usual term was 'hyung'. So I guess in the 2012 scenes we will hear the term 'oppa' more frequently.

Maybe some are not watching because they find the 70s old-fashioned. But truly a good production will not make you feel it's a problem at all. In fact, the first generation love story was done so lovingly I just feel so sorry it has to end so soon!

And I'm beginning to be upset that I'm not watching this on a 50" TV. It's so beautifully shot. The departing train scene in Ep 4 was very impressive. Haven't seen a more beautiful train scene before.

Eeeek! I'm going to make sure I can watch it on an upgraded TV before they get to the scenes in Biei! Don't miss it! Biei's winter scene is awesome!

(Did you guys noticed that Love Rain has both Autumn and Winter seasons? It's a combi of Autumn in My Heart and Winter Sonata!)

If I ever watched this drama it would have to be after the time skip. I tried watching the first episode for Geun Suk, but I couldn't get through it, and about 3mins of the 4ep recap. And I can't say I'm gonna miss much if I skip this whole generation and just wait for the kids romance and hope that since they are closer to my age group I would be more invested. But the way this drama is styled that might be unlikely. I fear that after time skip it will just be the focus of the parents rekindling their lost chance at romance with the kids idoling in the background.

so let's see what will happen.. it's in the hand of the writer and how the director will present it.. hoping that the new generation to be good 'coz i can see that the 70's was well written and directed..

To be able to digest this kind of drama you have to watch it fully without any prejudice and you will feel the love that the drama wants to convey with its audience.. its not intriguing nor funny or whatever the trend now we are looking for the drama. This 70's drama is a pure love story that puts smile on your face as you watch it.

Wishing and praying for the best for LOVE RAIN because it is really a beautiful drama to experience...

Love Rain reminds me of the movie 'The Classic' by Son Ye Jin back in early 2000s. The premise of having 2 generations in the story means that there definitely will be a (very?) different feel between the early part and later part of the drama. Unfortunately, most viewers today are over 'melos' and would hardly have any idea how different relationships were back before we had Twitter, Facebook, Handphones, Speed-Dating and all other modern contraptions. I for one, am such a sucker for such dramas/movies and hence fallen hard for this.
And yes, the colors and scenes are absolutely amazing. See Episode 3 where the sketch club went for their 'sketch trip'.

One needs to be in touch with their feelings in order to love this drama. If your idea of love is equal to a dating relationship you will never understand why in the world the leads are mopping over each other all day.

On other hand, I do think love is never out of fashion. Main problem could be some think this type of dramas wear them down and equate such disinterest as equivalent to a 'boring' or 'bad' show, just like I think an action/police etc kind of drama would not complete my day.

A check on Youtube shows that lots of people are falling in love with this drama. Even if the view count may be slow (I'm not sure if that is considered slow), the comments certainly show that many are loving it.

(sheepishly... though I'm on this blog once in awhile it's never for the recaps. If I want to read recaps I would have done with a book. Slow? Not at all for me. I've recently watched some dramas that were, though full of happenings, bored me no end and I abandoned it right from the first couple episodes. How can it be considered a slow moving plot when so many has happened thus far. I've seen some romantic comedies that are no different from 1st episode to almost the very last.

But if you say the mood is 'slow', yes it is. The more apt word would be 'sentimental'?

And I love how this difference in appearance is going to throw up the contrast for the 70s and the modern character, both in appearance, character, place, season and possibly story and hopefully fate. Oh!!! Isn't this film beginning to look absolutely poetic!

Was really reluctant to start this one as King 2 Hearts has been just too amazing, with Rooftop Prince adding some humor in my week. But with nothing else on hand, I decided to give it a shot and did not hate it as much as I thought. Maybe because of the cinematography and visuals, it reminded me of my favorite movie, "The Classic," with Son ye Jin and Jo In Sung. Yoona's character's house with the lightpost really looks like it's from the movie, along with the yellow umbrella, and the college campus (those stairs seem to be in every show on a college campus).

This drama is a throwback to older dramas, and since it takes place in the 70's, I can accept that dating took on a much slower pace--what was acceptable then was vastly different than what we see now. So I can stick with it and am giving it a shot as the preview for ep. 3 shows some movement in JGS's character.
