MBC confirms Moon/Sun will not air this week

The addition of drama PDs to the MBC labor strike has rendered it impossible for The Moon That Embraces the Sun to finish production on this week’s episodes, as previously feared. There’s just too much work and too few hands among the short-staffed crew, and MBC has announced that they’ll be airing Moon/Sun specials this week to fill in the gap.

The upside: The filming with the principal cast will end on time, which is good news since Kim Soo-hyun and Jung Il-woo are booked solid, having assumed they’d wrap this drama by Thursday. The reason the two final episodes will not be ready for this week’s broadcast slots is because there isn’t enough time (or hands on deck) to complete all the editing and post-production work.

This isn’t a great scenario for MBC, which has been extremely happy about selling out all of its advertising slots weeks in advance, and can boast a national drama in its ranks after, let’s face it, a lackluster past few years. I’m sure all eyes will be on the ratings meters next week, to see if a week’s delay causes numbers to plummet, or if people will tune in regardless ’cause, well, what else is there to watch?

Speaking of which, this sends the other stations scrambling to figure out what to do with their shows. Initially all three stations were to premiere their new shows on the same day, March 14. But Moon/Sun‘s postponement pushes back the Ha Ji-won/Lee Seung-gi vehicle The King 2 Hearts, which’ll air on March 21. Now KBS and SBS have to deal with the question of whether to also push back the premieres of Equator Man and Rooftop Prince, or risk handicapping their new dramas by pitting their launches against a Moon/Sun finale.

According to reports, SBS has decided to postpone Rooftop Prince accordingly, and will air a two-episode special, Family Portrait, in the intervening week. KBS’s decision is less certain; some reports state that Equator Man will also get pushed, while another cites a source with Equator’s production stating that they haven’t made any plans yet.

Awww I love Peyton Manning. Is he healthy enough to play though?.
He was on my football fantasy team last year and he never played but luckily I picked up Cam Newton to replace him and end up winning.
I'd skip K-drama to watch Peyton play or Eli anyday lol.

That was expected. If the shooting of the drama is done, everything else can wait. Now, i wouldn't like to be in charge of the airing schedules for all those channels. What a headache... And i'm quite sure we haven't seen the end of all that circus. Still praying for the hard working citizens to win over their various corrupted "kings and princes".

i think equator man should just air. compared with king 2 hearts and RP, it has considerably less buzz so it might be helpful to get itself out there before the 2 big dramas air.

Quite the Domino Effect going on with this postponement. Surprised there aren't any developments on the "Dude that Must Resign" front - none that I know of. And here I thought this might actually spur MBC to do something. Heh

"dude that must resign" --> he's not the owner of MBC is he? cuz if he is, I must say, he sure has alot of say and I'm sure it's not going to resign... bad sign for business that's for sure. Unfair treatment--definitely bad.

The domino effect is utmost interesting. Korean show-bizz is very curious for a westerner. As a fan I am sorry not to be able to watch it this week. But I am old enough to be patient and to stand by those people who work so hard for our entertainment. When politics and money are involved, thing have a tendancy to get nasty. But the other stations executives should take a stand. One man cannot and should not mess everybody else's business.

Ratings.

If they don't move, they're up for certain crushing against a 40% rival. If they move, they're all on equal footing and have a better shot at grabbing a bigger slice of the pie. Makes sense.

I'm sorry to see that this strike is screwing with our favorite dramas and variety shows, but it really is a wonderful thing that the MBC Union has the Golden Goose of Moon/Sun to dangle by the throat in front of the corrupt management execs of MBC. It's only right that after several years of 'nefarious doings' by the head honchos, and their firing of good, honest workers that the time has come for their own reversal of fortunes. (I vote to blend fantasy with reality and send in our City Hunter to even the score!) :)

My own private grief involves Rooftop Prince. I just watched the newly released 7 minute trailer. I am in love. Seriously. Can't believe this drama will be caught up in this face-off.

I wouldn't worry about Rooftop. The move will boost its chances of a strong start, so it won't really be a casualty of this strike.

You call the City Hunter, i call our vengeful Salarymen and women from Hell. :)
I agree with you, it was now or never to oust those awful people. I must confess i didn't watch Moon / Sun. I only looked at the pictures of the recaps. And now as you, what bugs me is the delay for the airing of the other dramas. I feel like a donkey trying to eat the carrot handled by its rider.
On the other hand, it gives those other shows a little respite for their own filming schedules.

I totally support the strikers on this. It's a slow machine, but eventually, and hopefully, changes will be made.

I'm in agreement with those that have lost their interest in this drama. I'm happy to read the recaps rather than actually watching. There isn't any chemistry between the two leads....they're a much better read rather than watching them.

Man, postponing it sucks, but only for a private, personal reason. I was looking forward to it! On the other hand, I'm also happy that they're using this as an opportunity to deal some heavy damage to the company for the strike cause, since let's face it, who doesn't want free press? It was interesting that this issue even made it way into my weekly The Economist magazine.

It also sucks that the new dramas are being pushed back, but :/ My spring break will coincide with these new dramas so I shall watch without need to restrict myself on a time basis! :)

And thanks, JB, for covering this as things are in flux. Last night when I started hearing bits and pieces I was sooo hoping you'd give us the real scoop...and there you were. Yay! Seriously, thank you!

How can they film without the main PD? Who's directing then?

And I'm pretty sure there will be a decrease in ratings due to the delay. I just really hope that the strikers will be successful in getting their current president to resign. On our UC campuses we also had a strike, well, an occupy movement, on March 1 to protest the way the UC chancellors are mucking things up. Down with fogey, old, overpaid, incompetent, unscrupulous, self-interested head bureaucrats/board of directors/etc >:|

I will miss moon but I can wait. Being a doctor who and Sherlock fan, you have to wait like a year and a half but so worth it. Same with American shows like once upon a time where they go on two month hiatus or new episode after 2 weeks. I hope the production will get what they deserve because moon has been a blast. I am also glad that the drama is finished filming so it wont interfere with the actors schedule so there won't be any unnecessary cutting and pasting from ep 19 for 20. If I was in Korea, I think I would still choose to watch the moon specials over the other dramas since I adore this cast and need my daily dose of Kim soo hyun

Well since the issue is mainly politics and the free press, I guess so...

...read an article that was posted in the related article of this post, and it's 3 stations that are generally affected: MBC, YTN, and one-of-the-big-three-not-sure-which-one-but--has-BS-in-the-end...

...so this strike is not just some small issue, it's a somewhat national one...

I reckon the finale ratings are still going to be high and break the 50% mark. 1 week makes us crazy, imagine 2 weeks, fans are going to be scrambling to watch the last 2 eps lol
