Rooftop Prince: Episode 4

You know, I wasn’t sure I was totally grasping how the time-travel and reincarnation and inheritance conflicts would all fit — or whether they would at all — but with this episode we start to see the threads coming together, and I’m going with it. I’m still not sure I love the corporate battle, but now I at least feel assured that the show knows where it’s going, and has a solid trajectory planned.

Ratings remain mostly the same; everybody rose a teeny bit but the rankings are unaffected with Rooftop at 11.4%, The King 2 Hearts at 14.6%, and Equator Man at 8.5%.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Se-na slaps the prince, who is immediately dragged away and thrown out. He keeps shouting, “Princess!” but she turns back to her work, ignoring the crazy man outside.

Park-ha continues readying her shop for its opening, which is called Park-ha’s Fruits and Veggies. Her landlord drops by to complete the contract paperwork, which is when Park-ha realizes that the envelope is empty — her bank check for 40 million won (about $35,000) is missing. Ah, so that’s what Se-na stole out of her bag the other day, evil wench.

Park-ha frantically searches her things, then calls Se-na, who ignores it. A flashback shows us that not only had she taken the check, she’d ripped it up. Arggggh, but I guess this way her action is untraceable, and nobody will ever know what happened.

Park-ha pleads with the landlord to give her till tomorrow morning to get him the money, but he doesn’t budge, preferring to cancel the contract. He tells her to empty the store and be out today.

It’s such a bummer that it makes it hard to laugh at the Aqua Men, who arrive wearing animal suits (to promote her store), with Becky and Lady Mimi helping out. Aw, I love when friend-families spring up, and if a friend is willing to make himself look ridiculous to help you, that’s a keeper. Although, yes, these boys don’t know they look ridiculous. Side point.

Yi Gak waits outside the company building all day, until Se-na leaves with Grandma CEO. He shouts for her again, but the guards muffle him this time and she leaves in the CEO’s car.

The lost check doesn’t work exactly like cash so it’s not like money has just fizzled into nothing, but putting a stop payment and getting a new check issued will take Park-ha several days. And if she can’t cough up the cash, she loses her contract deposit as well as all the money she put into buying product. She asks her stepmother to borrow the funds in the meantime, but that’s no small sum and it’s not like Mom’s got it lying around.

Se-na interrupts the conversation and asks to talk to Park-ha. She takes this opportunity to say “I told you so,” about predicting that Park-ha would ask Mom for a handout. Se-na draws out the smug scolding, but Park-ha has no time for idle chitchat and starts to leave… until unni offers to lend her the money.

Ah, so she’s going to use this as a way to manipulate Park-ha. Evil bitch is an evil wily bitch.

Her quid pro quo: Take the money to settle her affairs, then return to America. She gives her till tomorrow to think it over.

Park-ha has forgotten two things, and she first rushes back to close up shop before remembering the prince. He stands shivering in the rain, still outside the now-empty corporate building, dutifully waiting for her to pick him up as she promised. Aww. There’s something so pathetic about that image, him clenching his fists and shaking in the cold.

She apologizes for coming so late because she was held up with important matters, and Yi Gak rails at her angrily. Was her promise with him not important? Was it not worth keeping?

They’ve both had crappy days and take it out on each other. Arriving home, he decides she cares about nothing but money — she’s fixated on her store and completely neglected him. And because she’s a person who doesn’t keep promises, her business is sure to fail.

Park-ha isn’t in the mood to take this, and she turns things around on him: He may have gotten used to speaking his mind, but he’s a useless man who knows how to do nothing. He may call her a lowly fool, but he’s one too.

She takes a swing to slap him, but he grabs her arm and they stand there glaring furiously at each other.

Joseon era. Aw, I’ve missed the Joseon scenes.

Yi Gak finds his wife, Hwa-yong, waiting for him in the courtyard and has a joyous reunion. He holds her close and asks her to never leave him again, and she’s just as pleased to be with him.

And then… a ringtone cuts in, and Park-ha stands there, insistent that he earn his keep and work. She ignores his protests and drags him away, separating him from his princess.

He wakes up in the rooftop room, sighing over his unlucky dream.

In the morning, Park-ha finds her ducklings sitting at the table, awaiting their hot omurice breakfast. She’s still in a rotten mood and stomps out, ignoring their requests for food. Aw, honey, that’s mean. Yes, they’re grown men, but they’re also babies.

Yi Gak has his pride, and he declares that they don’t need her to feed them — they can figure it out themselves. Yong-sool is always quick to act and offers to find a cow or pig or something to eat, but Man-bo reminds him to use his brains before brawn: They won’t find any of those outside. Chi-san pleads for the prince to go to the convenience store to buy instant noodles, but Yi Gak has to face the humbling truth: “What money have I?”

It’s therefore super-touching that the Aqua-ducklings make arrangements through Becky to find part-time jobs, but hide it from the prince. They urge him to rest up today at home, while they’ll endure Becky’s annoying insistence that they go sightseeing, wink-wink.

Man-bo gets to work directing traffic in a parking garage, wielding his baton like a sword as he points, stabs, and parries. Too bad he’s not doing any real directing, and he ends up with a traffic jam on his hands.

Yong-sool gets a job as a barista, which is just crazy; the boy just landed in modern times and you’re going to make him figure out the intricacies of pulling espresso? A woman orders her drink and hands over her card, and he eyes her suspiciously: “Do you take me for a fool? You have to give me MONEY.”

Chi-san actually enjoys his task washing cars with the high-pressure hose and soaping up the exterior — and just as I’m thinking he might end up the winner today, he goes on to soap up the leather interior, too. OH NO. And then he gleefully turns the hose on the leather, spraying the suds away. Cringe cringe cringe. If he makes it through the job alive, he’ll be lucky.

Thankfully the three boys make it home alive, where they fess up and tell the prince that they were working to earn money for Park-ha, because her business was ruined before it even began. Yi Gak hadn’t known, and now he feels sorry for his harsh words the night before.

Becky comes to collect the boys again for work, and Lady Mimi gives the prince a once-over, wondering why he doesn’t work. She’s been told he doesn’t “do” manual labor, and she tsks-tsks disapprovingly, sizing him up as a lazybutt.

Park-ha heads out to meet her New York friend, Amy, who’s gotten married and is here to visit. Amy brings a tin box from Park-ha’s old locker, which she’d left at the pub.

Amy tells her she and her husband are going to open a restaurant, and encourages Park-ha to come to New York to work with them. So after seeing her friends off, Park-ha considers taking her sister’s money offer after all, and moving back to the States.

It would mean giving up the life she’s carved out for herself here, and the thought is enough to bring her to tears. At home, she finds the radish doll Yi Gak had picked up from the ground and rehung inside, which makes her smile.

Becky teaches some dance moves to the animal-suited boys, who follow along. They’re the kind of sexy-cute moves appropriate for her — yunno, a woman — but look terribly strange coming from them. (At least they’ll have their costume heads on, which explains why they’re going for such aegyo moves.)

Yi Gak watches with a skeptical This can’t be right look on his face. (And then he turns around and tries a move himself. Omg so cute.) What cracks me up about him is that half of him is too cool for school, but the other half is fiercely competitive so he always wants to outdo the others, even if that means he’s out-ridiculousing them.

Yong-sool asks if they really have to dance, and Lady Mimi tells them not only do you have to dance, you have to dance like crazy, to get people’s attention. Somehow I don’t think crazy will be a difficulty. She also reminds them that while they’re in costume, they have to be fully in character as animals — so, no talking.

The boys head off to begin working, but don’t forget to dutifully bow to their prince first. Adorable.

Lady Mimi leaves with another disapproving look at the lazy leader who won’t work, and that raises his hackles. Ha, I love that you can’t persuade him to work, but you can shame him.

So it is that Dog, Cat, and Rabbit are joined by Panda. Lady Mimi assumes this is Becky and complains that the others are doing such a poor job that Becky needs to show them how it’s done. Omg.

So Panda takes his place and dances his little heart out. I’m torn between loving the gag of the disguise giving him free rein, and desperately wishing we could see his face.

Back to the Home & Shopping company; I know it’s hard, but let’s try not to zone out. Great Aunt is in a snit because Tae-mu has disregarded her connections and chosen models from a different company for their wedding feature today.

Great Aunt feels belittled and storms off, then visits a man named Pyo Taek-soo, telling him it’s time to come back to Seoul and ask Granny to return to his old job. Taek-soo declines, saying sadly that he caused too much trouble before. His place is here, as the warehouse security guard. I’m not sure if he’s an ex-husband or a relative or why we care (’cause I don’t), but no doubt he’ll come into play later.

Grandma CEO worries about the model switch for today’s broadcast, since this is an important expansion of their market. Tae-mu assures her he has this well in hand, and adds that it’ll be good to use company employees for their shoot. He nominates Se-na as their model — a surprise move that Se-na isn’t expecting — but Grandma goes with it.

Se-na asks why Tae-mu sprung this on her, and when he grabs her for a hug, she reminds him that they might be seen. He’s feeling confident (or maybe reckless) and says he’s the company’s owner — “I will be, soon” — and doesn’t have to fear anybody’s eyes.

Park-ha sees her friends selling strawberries for her, touched at their initiative. A large crowd has gathered, drawn in by the silly dancing animals, and Lady Mimi credits Becky for doing all the hard work in attracting people.

The Panda is still gyrating energetically, but finally runs out of gas and keels over. The friends rush to “her” side worriedly, and Yong-sool decides to carry her to get help. The boys take off their masks (the ajummas ooh at their pretty faces) and take Panda indoors to rest. The guard recommends removing the costume, but Yong-sool stops him — they should respect the lady’s modesty, after all.

He calls Park-ha instead, just as Panda takes off his head to reveal Yi Gak. He hears Park-ha outside, though, and hurriedly puts the head back on and crosses his hands demurely in a ladylike pose — can’t let her see his embarrassment!

Park-ha offers “Becky” water and tries to take off the head, but Yi Gak refuses. So Park-ha takes his hand and thanks Becky for all her help, reminiscing on how they met two years ago, when they’d both been new to Korea. She apologizes, saying that she might leave without being able to repay all of Becky’s kindnesses.

Yi Gak shies away at the hand touch, but when Park-ha says she’s going to leave the rooftop for America, he whips around to stare at her. Then he gets up and crosses his arms in a full-body pout, and Park-ha apologizes; because she lost that check, she has no choice. She adds the request that Becky not tell her boys about this; she’ll tell them when the time is right.

Yi Gak storms off angrily and runs into Becky, who thinks he’s mad because he had to wear the suit in her place. (She got called on a last-minute job and needed the money.)

The wedding show prepares its broadcast, and Tae-mu pulls aside Se-na for quiet moment. He pulls her in close, then does a sleight-of-hand trick that ends with a diamond ring in his hand, which he slides onto her finger.

He asks her to marry him, suggests they break the news to the elders after the show, then whisks her off her feet to twirl her around. Aw, they really are cute together, when they’re being happily adoring, and not devilish or murderous. You’d think that wouldn’t have to be a caveat, but that’s K-drama for ya.

The rooftop family of seven — ducklings, Park-ha, and the girls — gather for a dinner party, where Park-ha heaps the gratitude and praise onto the three boys and pours them drinks. She ignores Yi Gak, assuming he was his usual unhelpful self, and he pours his own shot and seethes silently. When she promises to repay their kindness, he bursts out, “When?!” He accuses her of making a false promise, knowing she plans to leave, but since she doesn’t know that he knows, his reaction puzzles everyone.

Becky looks troubled and asks Yi Gak to step aside for a cup of coffee. (Yi Gak: “Rather than coffee, do you have something sweet?”) Her TV is set to a home shopping channel, and he looks amazed to see her onscreen modeling clothing.

Becky feels bad for getting the credit for his work and wants to tell Park-ha that he was dancing in the panda suit, but he’s distracted by the shopping channel’s wedding segment — and the bride, whom he recognizes. He wonders what she’s doing, and when Becky says she’s getting married, he bolts up in alarm. The princess, marry? It can’t be! (HAHA. His horror is real, but the misunderstanding just cracks me up.)

The Home Shopping family hears that their wedding package is a hit, and Tae-mu’s father hastens to praise Tae-mu for the good work. Grandma has been skeptical all this while, holding off on the congratulations, but now she gives Tae-mu credit for a job well done.

Yi Gak arrives at the shoot location in a taxi as the broadcast winds down, pushing his way inside frantically. He finds Se-na and laments the “wedding,” asking how she could do this, how she could not recognize him: “It’s me, Princess! Me!”

Tae-mu grabs Yi Gak and pulls him away, punching him in the face. The moment mimics that punch on the yacht, and in an eerie echo, Yi Gak goes flying over the railing and hits the water below. Dude, again? Once was an accident; twice means anger management.

The similarity rattles Tae-mu as they watch the red tracksuit floating facedown in the water.

Park-ha opens her old tin box and takes out a postcard — the one Tae-yong had drawn of her in New York. He’d been too shy to ask her out in person at the bar, but apparently he left it for her with the bartender, adding a note to meet him here in two days. She’d come, but he hadn’t.

There’s also a cell phone: A tourist had come to the pub to return a cell phone — she and some other dude had taken each other’s phones by mistake, and she wants to make the swap. (I speculate this will turn out to be Tae-yong’s phone, but we’ll have to wait and see.) Last but not least, there’s some kind of doll figure (a woman and a man) made of twine and stones.

A rescue team fishes Yi Gak out of the water and takes him to the hospital in an ambulance. Tae-mu rides along, badly shaken — you’ve gotta figure he’s got some rotten luck, finding himself in the same accident two times, with the same person (kinda).

Yi Gak is unconscious and unresponsive for a long while. As he lies on the gurney being treated, we flash back to his fall into the water. He floats there, wondering:

Yi Gak: “Who am I? Am I alive or dead? Who is this Tae-yong, who has the same face as I do? Who is the woman who bears the same face as the princess? Is this reincarnation? Have we been reborn? So, the princess must have been reborn. I must have died, then been reborn as Tae-yong. But if I was reincarnated as Tae-yong, then what am I doing here? Where is Tae-yong? Have I come here to take Tae-yong’s place?”

As his mind wonders these things, we see visions of his life, and Tae-yong’s — though I’m not sure if he’s seeing Tae-yong’s memories, or if this is for our benefit.

Yi Gak is defibrillated, but he flatlines. The doctor calls time of death. The family has gathered around the bed, and looks on in stunned silence as the sheet is pulled over his head, and Tae-mu’s initial shock gives way to relief, again.

But then the heart beats. Not dead yet.

Park-ha waits up that night, wondering where he is. Becky assures her that he’ll be fine, since she sent him off with Park-ha’s contact information and some cash.

As the family leaves the hospital, Grandma says it’s a good thing, since they were almost responsible for a death. She tells Tae-mu that he almost killed a man, and instructs Se-na to make arrangements: They’ll take responsibility for the patient and give him a VIP room.

They don’t know who the man is or who his emergency contacts are, so when the nurse finds the scrap of paper with a phone number in the red tracksuit, they give it a call.

Park-ha arrives in time to share an elevator with Grandma, and then she’s introduced to Se-na and Tae-mu as Red’s guardian. They look at her in wide-eyed shock but don’t betray that they know her, leading her to the room.

When they arrive, they find Yi Gak awake and sitting up, awaiting their arrival. He looks straight at them and says, “Grandmother, it’s me. Tae-yong.” Whaaaa?

One heart failure averted, only to spur three almost-heart-attacks. He smiles, ever so slightly.

COMMENTS

Ooh, nice twist. My assumption is that Yi Gak hasn’t managed to somehow acquire Tae-yong’s memories, but has pieced together enough of the details to figure out the family dynamics. Going on the theory that he has been reincarnated, he suppose there’s an important connection between him and Tae-yong — and so, the best way to get to the bottom of that is to remain in Tae-yong’s circle. If he wants to find out the mystery of his lost princess’s death, for now this is the best plan. At least it IS a plan — otherwise, what else can he do but sit around and wait for the rooftop portal to open again, if ever?

This is just my speculation, so perhaps you’ve got other ideas. I do love that a drama like this opens the door for so much fun speculating. Now that I see where this is heading, I have some faith that there IS something to speculate, that the writer has a concrete idea of where he’s taking this story.

I know there’s some speculation that the dead woman in the pond wasn’t the princess, and I’m not discounting that theory. It’s an interesting one, and one I’m keeping at the back of my mind. But so far the drama hasn’t given us any indication that a body-switch is part of the intrigue, so I’m going with: The princess died in the pond. Until we get more clues, at least.

I do love the makeshift family storylines that are starting to emerge. I was plenty happy with the central fivesome — Park-ha and her Joseon ducklings — but it’s also nice to have the extension of her neighbors. On their own, I don’t think Becky and Lady Mimi are all that interesting (yet?), but as part of the big family, I love it. Becky’s the foreign transplant, Park-ha’s the orphan, the others are displaced in time, and Lady Mimi — well, she’s eccentric.

So you have this ragtag team of outcasts who don’t really fit in here, or belong anywhere in particular, and they’re making their own home here with each other. The theme of non-family members bonding together in a family that’s created, not born — it’s a recipe for awesomeness. When it’s done well, that is. And so far we’re doing it with humor and heart, so I’m a happy camper.

I shouldn’t be surprised since the writer wrote my favorite makeshift-family drama Bad Family, but in any case, it’s always nice to get more than you were hoping for.

Sigh why can't everyone give Bak-ha a break.Yes she seems sugary sweet,naïve, and dumb but that's because she never grew up with a family after Sena convienantly lost her. It's just a defense mechanism to hide her hurt of never having a family, friends, home or a father.I think when she left the check it's because she felt a comfortable familiarity and that no one would touch it. Sigh can she please remember about Sena already? The other reason Yi-Gak is remembering things is because I think Taeyong spirit went in him.Just like soon Bu-yong spirit will be doing the same with Bak-ha.I need for her to do that riddle already already so they can start falling for each other. Not till episode 10 I don't think and. Now TY can make sure Bak-ha keeps her rooftop home and gets a job at the company so she doesn't have to leave to America. My final wish I want the sideswept hair pulled up instead of the blunt side cut. Only *5 tortorous days to go RTPERS! Thanks dramabeans!

You'd think that someone who had to fend for herself since 5 years old would be more tough, street-smart and hardened instead of naive, trusting, and happy go lucky.. it just doesn't make sense. how did she survive for so long being that naive? lol

I´m the same. I always see good in people so I don´t call Bak-ha naive for leaving her purse in presence of her sister, she doesn´t see her step-sis as an evil with (it´s just us because we see step-sis´s actions). I wouldn´t leave my purse with strangers but Bak-ha considers her step-sis family.

Yeah, I think most of us seek to see the good first and later acquiesce to the reality that is facing us about a person. *sighs*

Still, to have her character leave her purse open and not secured with that amount of cash (or cashier's check) was telling. It looks like they are beginnig to bring her character down from her previous heights of being smart, strong and independent. It started with the "strawberries" scene where she did not bring workers to help her pick the fruit. Whuh?

This reminds me of one scene from "The Caine Mutiny" where they first thought the captain was insane....It had something to do with strawberries....LOL

"It looks like they are beginnig to bring her character down from her previous heights of being smart, strong and independent. "

This is exactly what I'm afraid of. I hope they prove me wrong. There is nothing I hate worse than a character starting off tough and then turning into some weak damsel in distress.

at some point Im pretty sure her spirit from the Joseon Eras gonna shift into Park Ha. The catch might actually come when the Crown Prince asks Park Ha the exact same riddle and he gets the same exact answer as her alter self from Joseon.

We don't know what the Riddle Answer is anyways based from the 1st Episode now do we?

Nah. I'm pretty sure the answer to the riddle is candle. You know, it's dying when lit and lives when not.? Not sure why Princey would ask Park Ha such a riddle/question, though..

Anyway, I'm really loving this drama. I hope the fun continues and the conflicts played/used smartly.

thanks for the recap jb!
I'm worried that because of the prince's decision to "impersonate" Tae-yong we will be seeing less funny moments. I'm really disappointed in the chaebol family+Sena - they really are totally uninteresting. I don't know if it's the actors...or their lines or what. Can't wait for next week's episodes!

It would be funny if he fails, though.
If he keeps using formal sageuk Korean and people react strangely to him, for example. Or if he's confronted with a modern convenience he knew nothing about and has to fake it.

Hmm? I don't know what to think. Maybe since he thinks she's leaving he has to put his life in someone elses hands for the time being. And what better hands than those of his doppleganger's family. But what about his bros? The Aqua Team can't be parted! Most likely the grandma will force him to live back at home, right? Ah the thought bumbs me out.

I think that Yi Gak is so confused and feels adrift in the world, (since the Crown Princess doesn't recognize him and he has a doppelganger) that he's starting to believe that he is Tae-yong. Obviously, he hasn't had a complete memory wipe, but he believes his purpose of being in this world is because he was reincarnated to be Tae-yong, if that makes any sense. It gives him a sense of direction.

I still believe that the real Tae-yong is out there somewhere in a coma, awaiting the right dramatic moment to wake up.

I could actually cut out the whole inheritance storyline and instead flashback to the Joseon era. I thought that was a really interesting plot line and I want to know who killed the Princess. And know more about Park-ha's doppelganger. Was she as innocent as she seemed? What was her reaction to her sister being killed?

And I really really really hope that Park-ha does not go to America. Just so that we don't see any more English speaking scenes. Please I beg of you!! Those scenes are worse than the inheritance storyline, which is saying a lot!!

re: "Just so that we don’t see any more English speaking scenes. Please I beg of you!! "

o.m.g. the English scenes are excruciatingly painful. Did the producer walk into a grocery store and grab the first white person standing there? "Hey, you want to be in a Korean Drama?"

The dialogue sounds like an English tutorial audio:

"Jane went to the station to buy a bus ticket."
"Did Jane buy a ticket?"
"Yes. Jane bought a bus ticket."

(pulling hair out and grumbling....nrrrgggggg)

Yoochun's acting skills are superb. He has come a long way from his acting debut and I'm glad too see him take the main role in Rooftop Prince. It's not easy to potray a Crown Prince in modern age. Bearing in mind that this is a romantic comedy, one needs to have just the right mixture of action, romance and comedy. He has a lot of potential as an actor still - I hope to see a lot more of his dorkiness, seriousness, and charm in the future. Right behind you, Yoochun :D

P.S Sena's pretty, if it weren't for the fact that she does evil things. I've come to realise that in dramas, the people you envy (because they're so gorgeous!) in the beginning turn "ugly" later on when you become aware of the darkness beneath their lovely smiles. The fact that they're plotting/scheming all the time is quite enough to put someone off. On the other hand, some characters you may not have noticed because of their "common" appearance become suddenly prominent, and I mean really beautiful.

It's a pity, really. Because Sena has the looks but she ain't exactly loveable.

I liked Bad family too, but I hope when Tae Yong (Yi Gak) goes over to the rich family the story doesn't take a nose dive. Tae Yong's family are boring and just stereotypical Kdrama rich folks.

I like Park Ha's new family who reminded me of naughty boys, but are really innocent. I like their hi jinks which I thought were funny bits especially washing the interior of the car!! Those guys are a HOOT!

For some reason, I don't think it was the princess died in the pond because you never saw her face. Everyone who looks like someone from ancient times is alive in 2012.I think she faked her death with Tae Mu's look-a-like, and they were in a conspiracy to overthrown the throne just like Tae Mu is trying to takeover the company as CEO.The crown princess was evil then, and her evil character hasn't changed in the future. Is that reincarnation Karma?

Park Ha is a simple trusting soul who can't imagine why she can't leave the $40,000 won cheque laying around with her family. That is reason why the nasty adopted sister can take advantage of her unassuming nature. Can't wait until the evil sister past and present gets their come up pence.

I love your recap! I am going with this trajectory too.

Some say it's heading towards makjang but I don't have any thoughts on that yet and think that Lee Gak's just doing this in a desperate attempt to win Se Na.

Only a matter of time before he fully accepts that his Crown Princess and Se Na are not the same--I hope the whole denial thing won't drag too long.

I hope they can show some scenes where they are able to find more clues. Like Man Bo discovering Joseon history in Google!

Wow, I agree, Se-na and Tae-mu are actually really cute together when they're being all giggly and lovey-dovey :P Interesting twist at the end (I'm still WTFing from that) but I wish today's episode had a little more funny in it. And omg, the Amy and Park-ha scenes are just...*cringe*

This episode is awesome. I think it transcends all of our expectations in an extremely nice way. An intriguing twist that opens up more mystery exploration; lots of character development, and romance is up in the air, right (I love the scene where Park Ha held hand with the prince in guise of Becky, cute yet sentimental and clearly triggering a little love). Another week to wait, this drama grows on me. I'm pretty sure now that it is extremely unlikely that I will drop it.

People keep saying the crown princess faked her death......but why would she? she already has everything she wants, crown prince, destined to be the Queen (why would she want to overthrow herself to take over her own position? lol) It just doesnt make sense.

Anyway I LOVED the twist at the end, things are gonna be so interesting from here on out, I hope the drama keeps introducing these twists throughout its entirety instead of giving up and dragging along like most kdramas do.

The show's still young so we tend to make a lot of speculations as we can, then cross 'em out later on as the show progresses. The princess faking her death can be a plausible theory, a lot of theories are as of the moment. Even though she has "everything she wants", there might be a reason, yet to be revealed that may justify her faking her death.

People want to believe that the Crown Princess and Se-Na are similar people, but what if they are the complete opposite. What if in the past, Bak Ha's lookalike was the one that killed the Crown Princess. She does have a reason. After all, the Crown Princess did burn her face and took her spot.

It seems like it was someone else, though - why else would the government seem to be bent on covering it up? I also don't think that Bo-young has the political clout to influence things that way.

(Of course, if it does turn out to be her, that would be mind-blowing.)

Now I'm actively wishing for more Joseon scenes so we get more clues.

Hmm, to my mind, Park-ha wasn't being silly or naive by leaving her bag with a family member for the handful of minutes she was in the bathroom. And as for the money, um, it's a cheque; it would make no sense for someone to steal a cheque they couldn't cash. (this is, of course, not taking into account evil kdrama stepsisters.)

Something I found a bit surprising, however, is that I discovered whilst checking the names of the recappers for Rooftop Prince and King 2 Hearts, that (apparently?) Javabeans and Girlfriday aren't alternating eps (so far, at least). It's a topsy-turvy world, people.

Anyway, thanks for the recap, Javabeans! :)

Can someone help to enlighten me on one particular scene? While I was rewatching Ep 1, there was this scene in the Joseon period where the four of them were running across the bridge on a moonlit night to find the man who could tell them more about the Crown Princess' death.

The cameras zoomed in to the stone turtle at the edge of the lake, and at that moment the head of the turtle moved? It was a very quick scene and many would have missed it. I'm wondering if there's a secret watchpost or something and that was why the assassins were lying in wait for the Crown Prince because they knew he sneaked out of the Palace.

I love all the speculations and I totally love this show. I can't wait to see how the storyline will develop.

Thanks for the recap. Helps me to fill in the blanks from being impatient and watching the episodes with Chinese subs because they come out before the videos with English subs, and unfortunately my Chinese is a little rusty nowadays.

Like all of you I love to speculate on what's going to happen and I think I've written the rest of the script in my own head.

I think the prince has been thrown into the future to save Park-ha in this lifetime. The Gods decided he failed to save his true love in the past and he has to do it right this time round and with Tae-yong gone before they even started dating then there was nothing for it but to bring his past self to sort it out.

We've got time jumps, possible reincarnations so why not have Gods and the red thread of love fate too! Star-crossed lovers transcending time and space to find their true soul mates.

I also think the dead woman in the pond was Bu-Yong and is meant to reflect the death of Tae-yong, who also died in water, both of these people were about to discover their other half when they died. The bantering between the prince and his younger sister-in-law and his admiration for her artistic skills (although he didn't know yet that Bu-yong did the embroidery) was to set up that these two, dead or alive, are really the connected souls.

Perhaps Bu-yong discovered a coup was being hatched by her father and family, was against it and was accidentally killed as a result (the king looked ill and BY and HY's father seemed to have a lot of say in court when the prince tried to investigate his wife's death). Hwa-yong being selfish and evil didn't want to be on the losing side either way, decided to disappear whilst this is happening and seized the opportunity to make it look like she's dead rather than having to end up being killed like her husband if the coup succeeds, and if it doesn't, she won't have to live a life of being a traitor's daughter, she's dead already as far as anyone knows. After all, why were those men trying to kill the prince and his men when they were out of the palace? It has to be a coup. It's the equivalent of what's happening at Grandmother's company, with Tae-mu being the usurper this time, even though it started as an accident, perhaps like the other death in the past.

First off, I'm hoping for no more time jumps if they're going to make Park-ha and the prince into a couple. It wouldn't have the same feel if he goes back to his own time and even if Tae-yong somehow isn't dead and comes back we, the audience, would know he's not the guy she fell in love with.

Yi-gak will put the dots together from being thrown into more contact with Se-na (a possible Hwa-yong reincarnation now in his mind so he won't be as fixated). He'll find out she's Park-ha's sister and is evil to boot. Tae-mu will be more scared than ever, especially when he finds out about Tae-yong's drawing, date arrangement and mobile phone are in Park-ha's possession. He'll try to get close to Park-ha and Se-na, who hates losing, will do all sorts of evil to Park-ha. Yi-gak will get jealous over Tae-mu being close to both of the sisters and keep close watch and that's when he finds out about Se-na being evil and decides to protect Park-ha, falling in love with her at the same time of course.

Some of you are questioning why Tae-mu can remember Park-ha but she can't remember him or Tae-yong. I don't think it's odd at all. Two years is a long time and why would she remember two men she met on the street and in a bar where she was busy working two years ago? I know I wouldn't. She's not in the same situation as Tae-mu because Tae-yong said he liked her and they were taking particular notice of her at the time, a time he's told everyone never happened because he wasn't supposed to have met up with Tae-yong.

I somehow have a feeling that pictures or portraits are important to the story's development. Yi-gak seeing Tae-yong's picture and deciding TY might possibly be his reincarnated version. I suspect Tae-yong took photos of Park-ha in New York so that will jog her memories of seeing the cousins before. She'll be the key to unlocking Tae-mu's misdeeds.

Whether anyone ever confirms that Tae-yong is dead is not important in the story I think, to grandma her grandson is alive and she'll have Yi-gak inherit. He has to remain a prince of sorts somehow in the story.

Yi-gak and Park-ha will both find out that it was Tae-yong who did the drawing of her on the postcard and they'll both realize that Tae-yong liked Park-ha, further adding to their romantic development, especially if Yi-gak really thinks that Tae-yong is the equivalent of himself.

Someone mentioned why don't the boys check out the history books and I think someone will eventually and they'll come across a portrait of Bu-yong with a fluttering butterfly close to her face to cover the disfigurement. Similar to the drawing Tae-yong made. So far, Yi-gak doesn't know what the adult Bu-yong looked like so he might find out this way. He'll also find out she was the one found dead in the pond 300 years ago. Yi-gak, who's trying to connect the dots, will think Park-ha is the reincarnated version of Bu-yong, his wife's sister, the one he was meant to have married to begin with and the equivalent of the woman he's in love with currently, not only as himself, but also the reincarnated version of himself. It dawns on him that he's here to save her as the story continues.

Yi-gak sees the the twine and stones figures and recalls giving them to Bu-yong when they were kids (they must have met for him to have initially chosen her as his bride). Somehow in modern time the dolls trickled in to Park-ha's possession, not only because the dolls belong to her in her previous life but to help the story along so Yi-gak can realize they were the couple that should have been. Perhaps Tae-yong bought them thinking they were cute, the card and phone belongs to him so why not the dolls?

The aunt's guard friend I think will come in to play when Tae-mu and possibly Se-na too tries to get rid of Yi-gak and Park-ha. Perhaps his big mistake at the company was created by Tae-mu to get rid of him, obviously he's someone with power previously. He looks like the man standing next to the aunt in episode one when Tae-mu told the family that he couldn't find Tae-yong. Might be the aunt's husband. With him guarding a warehouse with dogs I can't help thinking that he and the dogs will be involved in Yi-gak and/or Park-ha's rescue.

Becky will be with be Mr. Blue. Lady Mimi will be with Mr Green. Mr. Yellow won't be with any gal if he is indeed a eunuch but he's got his buddies with him so he won't be lonely. Yi-gak will live as grandma's grandchild in the present time. Park-ha will become his wife, she might think he lost his memories and he was the man she met in New York or she might think he's a man from 300 years ago, either way she doesn't care because he's the man she loves now and is meant to be with. She has her new family and is not alone anymore.

The end.

I can't wait to see how the actual story goes but this is what popped in to my head after watching episode 4.

After typing up the long script from my head I went back to read the comments I've missed and I like the ideas some of you have mentioned.

I'll rewrite my script a little, stealing some of your speculations because I don't want Tae-yong or Bu-yong to be dead either.

Tae-yong has time jumped to Joseon and will live on as the prince. The dead woman is Hwa-yong, accidentally killed during an illicit midnight rendezvous with her lover, who is a person quite high up in the royal family. Everyone wanted the investigation stopped because no one wanted a scandal. Tae-yong (as the prince) meets Bu-yong, somehow sees her face without the veil and falls in love with her as she's the spitting image of the girl he liked in New York. This is not hard to imagine actually as she'll be a link to the life he left behind. There won't be any further investigation in to Hwa-yong's death as Tae-yong didn't really knew her and her lover was exiled when the king found out about the assassins.

In my long-winded comment I mentioned Yi-gak checking out history books and coming across a portrait of Bu-yong with a butterfly fluttering close to her face to hide the disfigurement, similar to the one Tae-yong drew of Park-ha in modern time. This picture was drawn by Tae-yong of his new wife, By-yong, as he lived on as the crown prince.

Yi-gak worked out Tae-yong lived on as him in the past and married Bu-yong, the girl he was meant to have married himself in the first place. He realizes that he's been thrown in to the present time because of Park-ha and not Hwa-yong/Se-na.

I still like the ideas of the twine and stones doll being a connection between the Joseon time and the present, and also Yi-gak finding out that Se-na is evil and he's there to save Park-ha.

No matter what I still don't want Yi-gak going back and being with Bu-yong or Tae-yong, whether he's time jumped or is alive in present day, coming back to be with Park-ha, because that's not the story I can see here. From what's being shown so far the love story is going to be about Yi-gak and Park-ha so I don't want any convenience swaps at the last minute. If the love story is about these two people then I want it to remain as such to the end.

"What dies when it's alive and alive when it dies?"

The shot of the dead woman in the pond straight after the scene of the prince giving Bu-yong this riddle threw me and that's what initially put the thought in my head that perhaps it's Bu-yong who died.

Though Bu-yong solved the prince's riddle in episode one the show didn't let us in on what the answer was. I'm sure we'll be told towards the end, perhaps when Yi-gak is reading the history books or Wikipedia. He remembers this and it'll help him to make the decision to live happily on as Tae-yong in modern time instead of fretting about going back to Joseon.

Perhaps in the end we'll find the symbolism of this riddle refers to Yi-gak and Tae-yong's time swaps. Both are dead (in a way, because they no longer exist in their own times) but are still alive in another time.

There's speculation that Bu-yong killed Hwa-yong but I don't want that to be the case. Perhaps Hwa-yong, worrying over her position because the the prince seemed to have a fondness for Bu-yong wanted to get rid of BY, and was trying to poison BY and she accidentally sprinkled the cyanide on the wrong persimmon. Don't forget kings had more than one wife in those times! But I'm not keen on this theory even though it's my own. I'm hoping that this is more of a coincidence than anything to do with BY.

Perhaps someone was poisoning the king slowly and HY found out or perhaps even in on it and her lover was the one doing the poisoning (the Tae-mu doppelganger). Perhaps BY caught HY together with her lover and they tried to kill BY with the poison and somehow HY accidentally ingested some during the struggle and in her panic fell in the pond too. Bu-yong got away and told her family and that's why daddy and brother are trying to cover up otherwise it could be death for them all.

If this is the case, and the past and present are supposed to be mirrors, then Grandma and Park-ha are in danger and death for Se-na. Perhaps this time round Yi-gak saves all of them and Se-na and her lover will go to jail and rot and rot. Death is too easy a way out for Se-na and Tae-mu.

It looks like the colour rangers are moving to a grander abode next week but Yi-gak won't the the rooftop prince then, so I hope he'll move back in with Park-ha at some stage. This being kdrama the heroine and hero have to be under the same roof for at least half the series for their love to grow.

Really, really love Roof Top Prince so far, hadn't expected much apart from some laughs but combining mysteries with romance and comedy has me hooked as I love all three.

I'm not sure if anyone else has thought if this yet, but I feel like the quote “What dies when it’s alive and alive when it dies?” is referring to the *SOUL*.

My reasoning is as follows;

1) They are definitely not referring to a tangible object...that's just not pedantic enough

2)Doesn't everyone's "soul" heart a little when we are dealt difficult blows...such as the death of a loved one?

3)Fits with the whole reincarnation theme the show has been playing with.

I'm not sure if anyone else has some other good theories? I would love to hear them!

"I don’t like to think that Tae-yong is dead – after all, someone will have to end up with Park-ha when Yi Gak has to go back to his own time (where he will end up with Bo-young, whom he was supposed to have married anyway). The evil princess can stay dead, and the evil modern-times sister can end up with nothing."

I absolutely agree with your opinion. And i don't think that Tae-yong died, either. I do think that he will show up sometime... The question is when...

it takes a few days (weeks given the amount?) to cancel the lost cheque and process the new one and she had to pay her landlord on the day she found out she lost it (or got it jacked from Se-Na)

so for the time that it takes to process she has nothing in terms of the money lost (worse if she had to pay off bills and such during the time frame the cheque was in the process of being cancelled)

Afterall, you can't really tell everyone "please give me a few more days/weeks to pay it off". Some might be generous but most of the time you'll get a response like the landlord did and saying "no sorry"

People seem to be ragging on Park Ha for leaving her purse with the step-sister, but I feel that you are somewhat biased and blinded because we know Sena's true personality and evil deeds as the viewer, whereas to Park Ha, Sena is a somewhat mean, selfish Unni(as older sisters can be) who feels uncomfortable being around her because she's not blood-related to her and her mother, but does "seem" to care(although the real reason being because she's afraid of being found out about the abandoning her in a truck incident). Park Ha doesn't know that her sister wants to get rid of her because of completely selfish desires. She probably is excessively naive and ignorant of sister's true self, because she's desperate for a family and is thus blinded from the truth. Not to mention her step-mom pulled her away suddenly because she needed someone to go with and she cares about her step-mom and worries since she had that broken arm and leg. She might not have had the time to think about grabbing her purse, as her step-mom was the priority, Even in New York when she hit Taeyong in the face she immediately let her fruit stand unguarded to check on him, which led to those kids taking her fruit. Since she also cares about her step-mom she probably doesn't want to think bad about her step-sister, who was born from her beloved step-mom.
Another thing, I don't know about you but when I go to the bathroom as long as one of my friends or a person I think I'm close with is at the table I just leave my crap at the table, with my laptop, wallet, cellphone, mp3, and other valuables, and Park Ha has been in Korea for 2 years already which means she's been around Sena for that long too, and she even felt close enough to Sena to go to her apartment and leave things in her refrigerator.
However, I do admit and wonder how Park Ha could possibly survive in New York with her trusting and good nature, maybe because of her nice personality she made really good friends who had her back, but even then....

[Sarcasm] If Park-ha was so nonchalant about carrying around $30,000 in a carrier bag un-secured, that’s on her and no one else. I felt no sympathy that someone, namely a "family" member, got their hands on the check that popped out exposing itself to the world.

The problem I had with the scene was that it was supposed to make Sena look bad---again---and to make the audience feel sorry for the candy, naive character losing her business oppty. Not. It was poorly executed because she did not zip or secure the contents in her bag. Most people would be checking to make sure the money was there for that amount of dough that was tied to one’s future. They showed her with such a lackadaisical mentality. I was glad the building owner or property manager did not allow her to have the rental space. I read $65,000 was the total payment so it looks she stands to lose her deposit.

Lost or stolen, she would have to wait before the bank to agree to replace the funds that are encumbered once she purchased the cashier's check. I did not appreciate the scriptwriter taking her down this path so blithely.

This is not the genre that I watch in kland because I cannot stand the candy character and they’ve just struck black gold with this character. ;)

I'll watch for the Joseon 4 to see their transformation and the solving of the crown princess murder mystery.

That trusting, naïve, and kind nature is why fate give Bak-ha a second chance at love because if she was closed off how would she have met G or the F4?Yes we should be mad at her but when she gets her memories back she will realize Sena is the one who stol her money, lost her on purpose, destroyed her family, and continues to ruin her life.It was in her description of her character and while she is suffering now I strongly feel her past life self is looking over her pushing her to G and looking out. Bak-ha is not going to america because G is going to ensure that. He will be Taeyong to make sure she stays in the Rooftop, stay with him and the F4, and build the feeling he feels. Also she will be working at the company with him either because of him or Taemu.Look at her sophisticated picture.Right now they are fitting the puzzle pieces together and leaving all the key clues out because Bak-ha has the phone, picture, and riddle. When G finally gets that answer and fixes Bak-ha life because of Sena all that is left is restoring order so Bu-young can be prevented.I think even though the F4 and G are leaving Bak-ha they will be frequent visitors to make sure she never leaves them or goes to america.I pray a miracle happens to get Bak-ha out of debt and on the road to love, her memories, and her true self. She is such a beautiful person inside and out I need 5 to come now so I can understand Ali song. Hurt which describes the OTP so well. Only 4 days to go.

The whole Panda scenario was priceless. It was cute, sweet, humanizing, and funny.

Love Micky Yoochun's natural acting! His nonchalance and general lack of self-consciousness makes him so magnetic and adorable onscreen. I'm looking forward to seeing more cute Chunfaces! :)

Fighting, Yoochun! Love you!!!
