Ryu Jin dorks out for Standby

This cracks me up: Ryu Jin, who’s so great at playing cold and serious, grins like a huge ol’ dork as the wannabe news anchor for MBC’s sitcom Standby.

Ah, he of the big dreams and the questionable fashion sense. (Those pants. They make me laugh.) There’s also the bumbling on-air presence, since he chokes in an early-career TV appearance and thereby consigns himself to a stagnating career while his younger colleagues pass him by.

Ryu’s character is named Ryu Jin-haeng (the other stars retain their real names for their characters) and marks a big departure from his prior images, showing us quirky and funny rather than cool, urbane, or sharp. I can hardly wait. With Lee Ki-woo playing his joking younger brother (and coming off such a random and quirky character in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop), can’t you just see the two brothers off on their own plane of 4-D ridiculousness? Plus there’s Ha Suk-jin, the younger, successful TV announcer who will probably make Jin-haeng stew at his own lack of upward mobility.

I do enjoy watching the “ruining” of a serious image, and I know Ryu Jin’s got great comic chops, so I’m expecting a lot from him. Hopefully the show doesn’t disappoint my ever-rising expectations… Or, I suppose I could just lower those expectations. It’s amazing what a pair of creamsicle-colored trousers can do, though.

Standby premieres in two weeks, following High Kick 3, and will air Monday through Friday on MBC.

I am glad that he is getting to play comedy. He deserves some joy after A Thousand (Tears, Disappointments), and Kisses. He deserves to get some of the laughs rather than having to play the straight man all the time. He is another one of those actors that exudes warmth even in those uptight characters he plays. I am trying not get excited because I probably would not be able to see this where I live, but . . . those "creamsicle" pants. What's not to love with this being the first day of spring and all?

I am cautiously optimistic. Those orange pants may just have enough mojo to blot the horrible memory of A Thousand Kisses out of my mind.
\Must focus...believe in the power of the orange pants.../

Is everyone super excited for this sitcom? I know I am. Here's the link of the script reading which shows the rest of the cast: http://simplysomin.blogspot.com/2012/03/official-photo-jung-so-min-script.html

Thanks for the link love the pictures, it's so funny that the actors don't pretty themselves up when going to a script reading is this a requirement? Does the production team ask them to come without any makeup on so that they are able to see the canvas for the characters. Because Ojakgyo Mom is sporting some pretty serious eyebags not that she's not pretty it's just that it was hard for me to recognize her.

exactly! He always does exude warmth despite the characters he plays. Like, I always hope that he has some good in him even though his characters always go off the deep end.
d'awww. I love sitcoms too! And for Korean shows, I'll watch 100+. It's like 20-30 minutes of joy errday!

Yeah I just discovered the joy of sitcoms with Vampire Idol I love it although the wait for subbed episodes could take a while but then the rewards are just that great. I'm also watching Unstoppable Highkick, I'm not forcing myself to marathon it I'm just grooving with it watching at my own pace and its pretty darn cool.

Dang. These pants indeed. Oo Yuck.

Not too sure about late thirties dorky guys or cutesy gals (hint: Kim Sun-Ah) tho. Let's wait and see.

Aww, this is right up my alley.
Ryu jin is an amazing actor.

But the second the angst hit A Thousand kisses I had to high tail it out so I'm looking forward the fun, awkward, dorktastic side of him!

I adore Ryu Jin, and I'm so happy that he gets a chance to play something different from his normally uptight and serious characters.

Hopefully this will be a funny and sweet show, especially after his last one "A Thousand Kisses" which I had hoped would be funny and sweet, ended up being... well, how do I even begin to describe that kind of dramatic hell? I don't even want to admit how many hours I wasted on that thing.

However, my hopes are high for this one!

I thought I'd given up on watching sitcoms but.....I REALLY wanna watch this one. I loved Ryu Jin in BFB (only thing I saw him in) and his appearance on Happy Together that showed him as a house-cleaning 'ahjumma' husband, just cemented my love even more.

Hehe. Those pants and that smile are win. Now....I just have to hope someone picks this up for subbing. -_-

Aww, so cute. Still cautious about going to full-blown, obsessive love for this show though. I may end up feeling as if this show will be awesome and then come back and bite me in the ass with a unsatisfactory ending (ex: Moon/Sun. SIGH.) But those orange pants nearly completely won me over, lol. Looking forward to this! (though it takes a lot of time and commitment)

Oh, those pants! Reminds me of the early 70's (in the USA) when polyester and weird colors were the "thing". When I was dating my future husband he had a yellow and white checkered tie ... and soon as we were married the tie mysteriously disappeared ;)
