The King 2 Hearts’s poster and trailer

The first official poster is out for MBC’s The King 2 Hearts, which has finally fixed (again) on a title after changing it a jillion times. The funny thing? Each change was minuscule, accompanied by some nonsense explanation that (1) totally overexplained, (2) and yet explained nothing, like we were in a merry-go-round of nitpickery.

In case you’re keeping track: It went from King [킹] to The King [더킹] to King 2hearts [킹투허츠] to The King 2 Hearts [더킹 투허츠] to The King 2 Hearts [더킹 투하츠]. If you’re wondering what the hell is the difference between the last two: hardly anything. It just went from phonetically spelling out huh-chu for hearts, then changing it to ha-chu.

(Apparently the production felt people were having too much trouble pronouncing huh-chu, thereby changing it to ha-chu. I’m not sure if they think we’re all idiots, or if there actually exists a large contingent of angry, internet-savvy pronounciation nazis out there who care deeply about the proper way to transliterate a foreign word. IN A TITLE THAT SUCKS ANYWAY.)

Anyway. Ahem. The drama stars Lee Seung-gi as the king of South Korea in a fictional world where the monarchy still exists. Ha Ji-won is a North Korean spy who falls in love with him, giving us Goong: Shiri meets Myung-wol. Or something.

Here’s the trailer, which is a lot more serious than I was anticipating:

So maybe it’s more like Goong: Shiri meets Myung-wol and becomes Daemul of The Royal Family. I wasn’t actually thinking The King would be a romantic comedy, because the writers (the “other Hong sisters”) don’t hew comedic. Their past dramas have been dramatic, with music-centered Beethoven Virus and idol-wannabes-in-training Over the Rainbow being the most recent entries on their resumés. It’s for that reason that I’m also, sadly, pretty uninterested in this drama, even though the actors are charismatic and the plot sounds eventful. But unless the writers have recently learned how to build up angst without dragging out plodding plotting, I just can’t get excited.

On the upside, Lee Seung-gi and Ha Ji-won look gorgeous together in the poster. And her long angled bob is pretty awesome. (Yay for no more mullets!)

The King 2 Hearts follows The Moon That Embraces the Sun, meaning its premiere just got delayed a week to March 21.

Wow, Ha Ji Won is hot stuff! LOL @ the drama title. I'm still more interested in Rooftop but I'll definitely tune in just to see Ha Ji Won.

Same here. I'll check it out for Ha Ji Won. There's a tiny forlorn hope in the fact that the writers wrote a brilliant little short drama called Taereung National Village several years ago...I couldn't believe they were the same people who wrote Beethoven Virus. If it ends up more Goong and Shiri than Spy Myungwol it could be decent...?

That poster is... gorgeous. Men in uniform are almost as beautiful as men in hand towels. Honestly i find both of them magnetics. I was expecting for a bit more of comedy in the teaser, but we will have Prince for that so the dark tone doesn't bother me.
I will just burn a few candles to avoid Myung Wol curse and dragging plot : Please, please make that drama epic. Those actors and us viewers deserve it.
Now excuse me, i will get back above to drool on that uniform... mmmmm.

I don't know much about the writers and I'm not sold on the plot, but talk about watching a drama for the eye-candy.

Maybe it's because the last projects by these two were comedic (unless, SG was actually trying to be serious.....) and the recent memory of Myungwol hasn't completely faded yet, I was think thing was going to be a rom-com.

I think they said because they want to emphasize both Seunggi & Ha Ji Won, that's why they decided to put "2 hearts" as the title as well. But I still love "The King" - it sounds more regal.

I also don't know anything about the writers; but will give this drama a chance because I love Ha Ji Won. She must trust the writers, otherwise she won't choose to take the role in TK2H so I'll trust her too.

And Seunggi wants to take more serious role, so I'll give him a chance too. He may surprise us.

The poster above is so romantic and regal - can't wait to see their chemistry.

It actually looks interesting, but I will admit I haven't seen anything else from these writers. The trailer at least looks beautifully shot, crisp, lovely colors - and I'm kinda thinking they look like they have chemistry.

I'm thrilled if this is Goong for Grownups with her all secretly pining for the King in marriage of convenience and political alliance.

But I could also be happy with 'their eyes met across the DMZ...their love would build a bridge.'

Yes, I'm a big sap.

I HOPE they bring in the funny in this one. I'm just sticking with this for Seung-gi, so if they turn on the Makjang button up too much, I'd just have to fast-forward to Seung-gi's scenes. Who knows? Maybe he'll show a bit of flesh underneath that uniform of his. His back exposure in MGIAG wasn't really enough, but I'm not really wishing for Hand Towel scenes since this is Lee No-to-nekkidness Seung-gi.

So...because of what ccinta said, I'm guessing the tile is supposed to be like "The King: 2 Hearts"? (or hoping...) That would make loads more sense, honestly...Also the way they set the typography with the big "the King" and the little "2 Hearts" at the bottom seems to suggest that also. Maybe it's a grammar problem we're all witnessing here...?

But, anywho...the poster looks all kinds o' romantic though. And when this was first announced there were complaints up & down that they wouldn't look good together. Pfft.

It does look dramatic though. I was actually expecting it to be more comedic, but I'll keep a look out anyway. It looks pretty interesting. But yeah, I hope it doesn't plod.

Imagine if they called this drama King2Heads.

Why is it when I look at Lee Seungi I think 'puppy'? But when I think of puppy getting it on with the sexy Ha Ji-won I'm like 'This is every male's fantasy'. I think a good movie with these 2 would be a coming of age story.

Want to see how the drama actually pans out even though it seems quite serious.

It seems like all the royals-in-the-modern-era dramas tend towards comedy, but this one chooses to go the slightly more dramatic route. I'm not sure if i will watch this. The constant title changes has left a bad taste. Makes me wonder how stable the script will be if they can't seem to even settle on a title.

OH MY GOODNESS! NOT ANOTHER ONE!!

Not another show that doesn't know what genre it wants to be!! It makes my heart weep to see these shows popping up like wayward little daisies in fields of roses. It's like the PDs don't know if they want to make a hearty rom-com or a serious melo with a dash of romance. In the end you get a clusterfck of different genres that only equals HOT MESS.

OH THE TRAGEDY! THE SADNESS! THE CAPSLOCKY-NESS!!

It's been described from the beginning that this is a black comedy, human melodrama. They never said that it's going to be a rom-com. Probably to separate themselves from the curse of Spy Myung Wol :)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but black comedy may also involve lots of action scenes combined with sometimes non-sense parody. Or they try to make parody based on sensitive issue (ie. in this drama, the political issue between the North & South Korea).

It's a genre which may not suit large number of viewers (who prefer a light drama - rom-com drama); so kuddos to Ha Ji Won & Lee Seung Gi to take up the challenge.

They will have their press conference tomorrow so they may release longer trailer / more trailers.

@JoAnne: Yes, I thought the same as well.

@Dea: I'm still a little lost as the premise. Most dramas can't seem to do rom-com right in 20 episodes so how exactly is this drama going to get black comedy and human melo right in 20? Especially since black comedy has to be done JUST right or else you end up getting campy and weird and just plain bad.

I'm just concerned that the show is trying to take on more than it can chew like dramas like Spy Myung Wol, Wild Romance, etc. They start out as one thing and then spiral into a hot mess of 100 other things. I mean I don't mind black comedy; I actually prefer it to slapstick comedy and romance. It makes for a better plot. I'm just not sure if it can be executed properly in a drama. Maybe a movie? I dunno. Still going to watch it though. >.<

I don't care what it's supposed to be, in terms are free genre...as long as it's good. I'll trust Seung Girls and Ha Ji Won.

After MGIAG which was written by THE Hong sisters, LSG is in a drama which is written by ANOTHER set of Hong sisters? Interesting...

Like you, Javabeans, I am less than interested in this drama even with LSG in it precisely because the writers are not THE Hong sisters who made me fall head over heels eternally in love with MGIAG...

So I am going to watch the first few episodes with no expectations whatsoever, so that if it turns out to be a flop, I will not be too disappointed...

I am hoping that the fact that LSG and HJW had chosen to be in this drama (out of the made other dramas which could have been offered to them) will in some way help viewers to give it a try and wait and see if it is worth our while to stay with it till the end... ;)
