Casting update for Time Slip Dr. Jin

Looks like Time Slip Dr. Jin is going full steam ahead with casting, now that it suddenly finds itself a month out from premiere. That’s the thing about dramas. You gotta have a cast to get on the air. It’s crazy like that. Lee Beom-soo has signed on pretty much right on the heels of Salaryman, for what will be a ten-year reunion with co-star Song Seung-heon, since their 2002 movie Run First (poster below). And then finally, we have some women rumored to join the cast: Kim So-yeon (Coffee) and Park Min-young (Man of Honor) are considering the show.

Dr. Jin is set in the late Joseon era (1860) and features a time-traveling genius brain surgeon (Song Seung-heon) who goes back 150 years and struggles to adapt his medical practice. Well I’d say. What’s a brain surgeon gonna do without lasers and all his fancy brain probing doohickeys?

Kim Jaejoong plays Kim Kyung-tak, descendant of a long line of warriors, and the most skilled martial artist and best military officer of the time. Lee Beom-soo has joined the cast as Lee Ha-eung, a “soldier of fortune,” aka a mercenary, or assassin for hire. Badass. He’s also a bit of an oddball character though, which if you’ve seen Lee Beom-soo in anything, you’ll know is perfect for him.

Park Min-young is up for a double role — Dr. Jin’s little sister in the present day, and then in the Joseon era, she plays Hong Young-rae, the daughter of a nobleman and… she’s not his sister anymore? Um, is anyone else worried about this storyline? I see where this is going…

Kim So-yeon is considering the role of Chun Hong, the best gisaeng in the land, who also possesses mystical powers. She has the power to look into the future, which sounds like it’ll come in handy for our time-jumping doctor. Both ladies are still unconfirmed, though the clock’s a-tickin’ on this beast.

Time Slip Dr. Jin follows Feast of the Gods and premieres May 26 on MBC.

Oh my, talk about blowing the lid off and going full steam ahead (did I just mix my metaphors), Dr Jin has surprised me with this latest news. At first I was worried about the drama, but if they get Kim So Yeon, who I loved in Iris and Prosecutor Princess and then the quirky Lee Bum Soo, it's a wrap. Can you just imagine KSY in joseon attire, like in gisaeng outfit, oh my. This is really shaping up nicely. I like that it is not an exact remake of the Japanese version, so there are still surprises for watchers.

Those who have seen the script and the costumes and back ground information have praised the drama a lot. I hope everything works out for them. There is potential for this drama to be huge.

I was wondering about the script, considering it's written by the writer who did Time Between Dog and Wolf, which I thought was one of the better (if not best) written action thriller dramas I've seen...great tension which made me yell at the screen & amazing cliffhangers which caused me to lose a lot of sleep!

With this latest casting of LBS and KSY as the Korean versions of Sakamoto Ryoma and Miki, this has now become my most anticipated drama of the year!

This.

I kind of glad it's Lee Beom-soo will play the Korean version of Sakamoto Ryoma instead of Jaejoong. And also, Kim So-yeon too as flawless Nokaze. The castings now looks pitch perfect to me. Both characters was pretty much the highlight of the drama and I hope this version will keep the values from the original.

are you sure about that idea? I mean look-wise that's okay, but acting-wise I don't think so. Kim So-yeon will outshine him, naturally.

Ameen! I love the possibility in that direction while PMY's double roles give me a very bad feeling. She's probably going to be the one who's in love with Dr.Jin and will never know why he doesn't love her back (at least not the way she wants him to be).

And to my surprise the story seems to be very interesting. Yeah, now I'm talking about the storyline. Glad to know that I no longer watching the show just to drool over THT gorgeousness.

And Lee Boem Soo? Yes! Yes!

KSY in gisaeng costume... it's gonna be gorgeous... i would love her pairs with both SSH and LBS if they did kind of follow the original Jin...if KSY is in the of role of Miki, then she would have loveline between Dr. Jin and LBS..

but then again is KSY and LBS both second lead then?!? it seems kind of wrong.

My prediction:
KSY has the talent to be the emotional anchor for the show.
She will make me cry.

Before we get to her character, it'll be pretty and sweet with PMY and THT, but I guess there has to be towel tilting angst that pushes him back to Joseon Days.

Anyway, maybe JJ will also be in love with KSY, and he really needs to fall in love with KSY - NOT PMY.
JJ will definitely make me cry.

LBS will steal every scene he is in and his role will expand beyond what the writers originally planned.
He will make me cry.

THT will be gorgeous, and if he has taken acting lessons, may make me cry. If he hasn't taken acting lessons, he will just annoy me.

PMY? I dunno. MOH pretty much demonstrated that what we have seen so far from her is what we get. The PD's aren't really asking her to stretch much.
She may just annoy me with blandness.

I don't really know if I should be worried that it seems the characters aren't 'clones' of their Japanese counterparts... I mean, on the one hand, yay for Dr. Jin not being a weird remake of JIN, but on the other hand, one of the things I liked the most from JIN was its mix of the whole time slipping story with the historical plot. And with those characters, I have a feeling they'll focus (only?) on the romance part :/

(I'm totally watching this though xD I mean, it has an impressive cast, even if the ladies are only rumoured to be in .___.)

'Cause people seem to feel that this drama's doomed to fail because she may or may not be in it. Don't get me wrong, the other actors are MUCH better than her in the acting department but I dunno, I liked her in SKKS and think she can do well in this drama, no?

0

Required fields are marked *

i think she hasn't found her forte yet...it is comedy, melo, action, etc? another reason(it always surfaces) is that she's plastic, ppl say she used to look nothing like she does now, so I dunno...though i might add that this should have nothing to do with acting abilities...ppl seem to forgive extreme plastic surgery in some actresses but not in others (Lee Si Young, for example...just google)...so it boils down to how comfortable you are with it...I didn't know abt this earlier but when i was praising her to a friend, he actually answered 'she's plastic!',,,and it ended there!yeah...confusing

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree. I think she's quite likable, and she's a serviceable actress. I don't think any drama would be a trainwreck just because they have her casted in it (unless it was a role that requires some great acting chops). Not to mention, she has some good projects in her resume--SKKS and City Hunter anyone? The two were great dramas, and she did her part in them, though I never felt like she went above and beyond or anything.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, she leaves no mark whatsoever for me. I mean, I don't think she's plastic - I find her pretty emotive. But she always looks like she's playing herself and not the character. Looking back at Kim Yoon Hee and Kim Na Na, all I can remember is Park Min Young.

Kim So Yeon and Lee Beom Soo are what I'm excited about.

And Kim So-yeon, love her. She is amazing. And I super love all her Red Carpet look.

Both LBS and KSY will blow everyone away! Lucky they have these two on board if KSY confirms as well.

with Kim So-yeon and Lee Beom-soo, they just added Acting Chops and Charisma to the time-slip-Dr.Jin resume.

I put Park Min-young in the same league as Song Seung-heon and Jaejoong (easy on the eyes, but only serviceable in the acting). Then again with PMY, she has been adorable and likeable in all her roles so far, I'd always give her a chance. (by the way PMY dear, you already did the faux-cest with MoH, so please no)

Time Slip was in desperate needs of some news concerning the heroine and even though it's only rumored for now, it still is welcomed for me.

Totally agree with your post nomu. PMY is okay, SSH is better in rom-coms, Jaejoong has great potential but LEE BEOM SOO!!! Kim Seo Yeon would also be a great add as a giseang. But I hope she does have a crucial role because this woman can act!

Granted, I would have probably watched this without KSY and LBS just for SSH and Jaejoong but with the addition of these actors, my interest just went through the roof. Praise be to the drama gods for adding actors with amazing acting range! Lee Beom Soo is one of my fave actors non of his dramas have failed me before so I'm hoping Jin is going to be one amazing ride.

Well, since they're calling it Dr. Jin, they better not make a horrible version of it. The original J-dorama was one of the best for me, be it the plot, the directing, the scenery, everything.

Especially the excellent acting. While the main actors, Osawa Takao, Uchino Masaaki, Ayase Haruka, Nakatani Miki, Koide Keisuke, etc were great, what also made Jin strong was because of the supporting casts. The medical team, the warrior clans, the geisha, they complete the story.

Ok, now, LBS as Sakamoto Ryoma, KSY as Nokaze, they can perfectly deliver. No worries. PMY, I think is ok, and I kinda can see Jaejoong as Kyotaro.

But to picture SSH as Minakata Jin-sensei, and I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but ehhhh.. I really find it hard to imagine, but hopefully, hopefuly I'm wrong and he can deliver.

Sorry for my long rant, but please, please do not ruin my beloved drama...

I'll be honest, SSH is my first love in K-drama (Autumn Tale), but as much as I love him there, his ability is limited.

He's servicable when the role does not require much, which is why I find him ok in My Princess, but for a role as difficult as Jin-sensei, I really wish they would've cast someone else. *sigh*

But then, it depends on the story as well. Because my spidey sense is telling me they're gonna turn it into a makjang fest like you said. >_<

Haish, why can't they just leave JIN alone and go with something totally different, totally new? But I guess what's done is done. Till then, let us all pray together...waaa...

Iirc, I've only watched 'My Princess' from him, and yeah, I thought he was OK there (mostly because it wasn't a hard character to play), but I don't think he's the right actor to play Jin :/ I hope he proves me wrong though.

I hate makjang fests ;___; I mean, I suppose it's inevitable they exaggerate the romance and so because it's a Korean drama and they tend to do it, but turning Saki into Jin's sister in the present time?

granted, i will check out anything song seung-hun is in. i was at an impressionable age when i saw autumn fairytale, and i still harbor a soft spot for him. i do think he's one of the most strikingly handsome actors in the biz.

but not really impressed with the rest of the casting. park min-young doesn't appeal to me as an actor; she was the reason why i couldn't watch sungkyunkwan to the end. i DID enjoy her in city hunter, although she has yet to impress me with her acting. and i typically like lee bum-soo (well, from on air), but i guess salaryman is still too fresh in my mind. didn't like him there at all.

i like the idea of kim so-yeon, and also jaejoong. word he is one ethereal looking man-boy.

and another thing- do they REALLY want to go up against gentleman's dignity? they're sure to get crushed, although i admit i may be wrong. it's just that kim eun-sook has such a stellar track record for trendy mega hits, and jang dong gun's star power probably eclipses song seung-hun's...

Happy that Kim So Yeon and Lee Beom Soo are joining the show as the korean counterparts of Nokaze and Sakamoto Ryomo. They will absolutely rock their roles and eat SSH for dinner.

I think Park Min Young would make an okay Saki but am not happy the made her Dr. Jin's sister instead of JJ's sister. I wonder how JJ will handle saguek speech?

The one am most worried however is SSH as Jin as he needs to bring out emotional depth (as he literally has the future in his hands) which I don't think he is capable of.

Hm.. am I the only one who was already planning to give this show a chance? Even though I roll my eyes at the how many dramas are jumping on the bandwagon, I'm actually kinda digging the time-travel trend.

I figured I'd just watch a few episodes to see what it was like, then move on if it was horrible (and it could be), but if Kim So-yeon is joining the cast, I'm a little more hopeful. I love her!

I'm planning on giving the show a chance as well, but I can see why some people are having doubts about the show. It has a lot of things working against its favor. Not to mention, it has a huge wall to climb (by it being a remake).

I'm digging the time-travel trend as well. I don't have a problem with it as long as each writer does something unique with it. Let's face it, there are a lot of drama cliches out there, but they can be enjoyable as long as there's some sort of twist or freshness about it.

KIM SO YEON.
I've watched the Japanese drama and I don't think Park Minyoung is ready or fit for this role either. She just doesn't give off the right vibe. Someone with a classic kind of beauty would be nice. Han Jimin or Han Hyejin would really be nice but they're shooting their own dramas right now.

Um, is anyone else worried about this storyline? I see where this is going…
NOOOOOO....I will kill them!!!! on the other hand if she is paired opposite Jaejoong, she'd need only one more JYJ member to go for a homerun....
Lordy what a cast, I won't say that I love all of them but there is no denying that everyone here is a lading actor in their own right.....now I think that this sure can give Gentleman's Digninty a run for its money...I wasn;t sure about watching this earlier but if Kim So Yeon, who I've been dying to see make a comeback, signs on...then I'm going to be in...can you imagine her in a hanbok?!!!...super pretty!!!...also this might mean Kaedejun may have another recapping project in her hands...keke

I love KSY in Prosecutor Princess, JJ actually was unexpectedly good in Protect the Boss and MY in SKKS is unforgettable for me, SSH is OK but he is the one and only Mr.HandTowel !!! :) sooo... count me in Dr.Jin !!!

I watched SKKS and love it. Watched more than half of CH and still haven't found the urge to finish it. But it's not until this post that I finally dawn on me that PMY was the lady in SKKS! I thought when I saw her in CH was the first time I saw her. So, I guess that means she's somewhat forgettable.

Given the details out so far I can tell why they were accused of plagiarism.... It's almost a dead ringer for JIN; but I will watch for park min young :)

Actually they are the official licensee to do adaptation for the manga. Faith is the one accused of plagiarism if I am not wrong.

I wanted a strong actress in the main role. Not PMY, someone who can lead this show because the others actors can't.

I see this ship sinking.

Phew! Meaning Feast of Gods is ending soon yeahs?! Gotta say Koreans constantly surprise me with their choice of popular dramas cuz apparently its doing pretty well in ratings. I mean the cast is pretty decent but its the same old 'birth secrets' kinda drama and theres nothing extra special in it to make it stand out imo...

I find it sorta interesting that Lee Min-ho was(is?) up for the lead in Faith which we all know is sort of the rival for Dr. Jin. So now that Park Min-young is up for a role they're sort of competing against each other. Are they still even dating? I heard they broke up.

As for Park's role as the little sister....maybe they mean like a little sister who's really a close family friend and not biologically his little sister? I really hope they don't do anything weird with that. o.O

I agree with you, I hope that it is something like that. Either PARK MIN YOUNG should be like a close little sister or else everything is just gonna be creepy and weird if he falls in love with his younger sister?

I hope this doesn't end up like Lie to Me and spend the entire budget on casting and gives us crap on the plot.

Been burned a few too many times.

So;
LBS-Uchino Masaki (Sakamoto Ryoma)
PMY- Ayase Haruka (Saki)
KSY-Nakatani Miki( Nokaze)
Jaejoong-Koide Keisuke( Kyotaro)

But little sister, there was nothing like that in the original dorama, instead there was Nokaze the courtesan who looked exactly like his gf back in modern time.
The possible I love my little sister vibe is super creepy.
And why does the gisaeng have to have "mystic"powers ?
Honestly even though I adore KSY and LBS but Ayase Haruka and Koide Keisuke are far stronger actors then PMY and Jaejoon even though Jaejoong has improved.

Omfg, honestly, I watched JIN. & to say, for this korean version, if kim so yeon is the giasaeng in here, Im totally rooting for her story. Although in JIN, I liked the other story couple much better. But for reals? Sister in the present, & then in period time, they;re not bro and sis no more? OH NO. I Don't like that idea, it's soooo messed up. But I saw park min young coming that way, but didn't see kim so yeon! I hope that both of them are in here! It will make everything good & complete. ;D
