Dr. Jin beats Faith to the punch with summer premiere

javabeans: So Song Seung-heon’s time-traveling medical drama has gotten on MBC’s schedule, and will be premiering in summer. They’re saying June, but it could be July.

girlfriday: Er? I thought Time Slip Dr. Jin already had a timeslot. Wasn’t there a whole debate we had about the size of his ego and cable?

javabeans: No, I think the substance of that discussion was mostly about towels.

girlfriday: It usually is.

javabeans: Time slip always trips me up, because it’s one of those terms that got co-opted into Korean that we don’t use in English, but it just makes me picture Song Seung-heon standing there with a permission slip to leave school or something. You know, his time slip.

girlfriday: Or standing there in a jumpsuit waiting to punch his time slip for his hourly job.

javabeans: His jumpsuit made of towels?

girlfriday: Yes, exactly. Also, I thought this drama was Faith?

javabeans: That’s what makes this news so funny to me. Lee Min-ho just got cast in Faith and was in all the headlines yesterday, with the media touting the power of the Lee Min-ho Effect in finally getting the show on the air.

girlfriday: The power of Lee Min-ho to make all noonas swoon? Oh, you mean the other one, his starpower.

javabeans: You might call those one and the same. You know, ‘cause Faith went through a couple leads, lost them, then sat in development hell for two years… and then he signs the dotted line and BOOM! Instant timeslot. I think people may underestimate just how huge Lee Min-ho is — he’s more than just another pretty face; he has more than just popularity, but also clout. On the Seung-gi Scale, he rates somewhere between refrigerator CF and mobs of handsy ajummas.

girlfriday: You mean Song Seung-heon circa 2000?

javabeans: Pretty much. So then you just know Song Seung-heon got all apoplectic about being pre-empted by that upstart, put in a few calls, and made sure HIS time-tripping, medical fusion sageuk drama got on the air FIRST.

girlfriday: Can’t have the young whippersnapper stealin’ your thunder now, can you?

javabeans: Right? Can’t you just see him yelling into his Bluetooth, “Just GET ME ON THE AIR BEFORE HIM, do you hear me?! Before August or I walk!”

girlfriday: “And these abs go with me!”

javabeans: I would hope so. And now all the headlines read, Dr. Jin To Air Before Drama With Same Premise Faith. Except… Faith has the legendary writer-PD duo of Sandglass, Eyes of Dawn, and Legend… while Song Seung-heon’s drama don’t got no writer or producer listed yet.

girlfriday: That seems to be a glaring omission.

javabeans: Maybe his abs will compensate.

girlfriday: Surely, they compensate for a lot. But I dunno if they have picked up drama-writing skills yet.

javabeans: But if they distract you enough from the lack of drama writing, maybe it’s the same difference.

girlfriday: Touché.

javabeans: But no touch.

girlfriday: Hands off the moneymaker!

Don't get the appeal of LSG.

He's an OK actor when he's not overacting and frankly don't find him funny at all in his variety hosting/participating skills.

As for looks, let's just say, not even close to good-looking.

For the longest time I felt the same way about Lee Seung Gi, and it always puzzled me why people adored him so. Until I started watching Gumiho and 1N2D and I'm pretty much a goner. I guess I finally see the light.

0

I haven't seen enough of his projects to pass off a sound personal opinion. I think he's cute and entertaining enough in 1N2D and the only times I've seen him acting were in the Infamous Chill Sisters and his cameo in Best Love.
But the reason why I can't bring myself to watch Gumiho or King 2 Hearts despite liking both lead actresses (and being interested in the storylines) is because I can't really find any attraction in his face that hooks me enough to look at it for a whole series. He is very clean-cut and nice-looking, but yes, I admit I am superficial and like lead actors who have some more...sex appeal/hotness. *sigh*

0

It's funny, Nicole, because I agree with you that he doesn't scream (or even whisper) sex appeal as himself...but I have seen him in MGiaGH and Shining Inheritance and I'm watching him in K2H...and somehow, within the role, he definitely sells it.

It's sort of the JGS effect - he looks one way but then in a role he seems entirely another. Except in this case, Sukkie usually looks like a girl and sounds like a man, and Puppy looks like a boy but sounds like a man.

0

Oh thank god I thought I was alone lol.

I don't get what all the hub-bub is about. He's not that good-looking. I think he's a good actor though. I think most of the love comes from ahjummas who wish they had him as a son.

0

Joining the Lee Seung Gi *don't understand it* club.

To me, he's like Matt Damon. He's got that Average-Joe quality.
If he stood in a group of a dozen other men of similar stature and ethnicity.....then you were asked to rate them ...from most-handsome/charismatic to least, based on visuals alone ---he'd probably score somewhere between 5-6.

It's neither praising nor damning....it's just --- average.

I rarely watch the variety shows (apparently his forte) because so few are fully English subbed. Dramas, I can follow fairly well without subs, but variety shows play off of quick wit/banter....which supposedly he's good at.

So~ I sense that I'm probably judging him when he's out of his BEST element. Yet, that also causes me to wonder why he's being cast as *hot male lead actor*....if he's better at other things. (?) In any case, I am still enjoying the ill-named "The King 2 Hearts".

0

Can't believe I finally found people that feel the same way about LSG. I've watched in him in both Brilliant Legacy and Gumiho, and he still hasn't impressed me much either. I think his acting is okay, but something about his appearance doesn't seem to hook me in as other Kdrama actors do. I'm planning to watch King Two Hearts and hoping this is role that maybe he shines more in.

0

When I was really getting into k-dramas and unfamiliar with names and things, Shining Inheritance was one of the first things I watched. I found him more attractive the more I watched him--it wasn't something I saw right away, lol.I also like his acting, so that helped. I guess my admiration for LSG grew along with my affections for the character he was playing in a way. And then stayed cuz he's a fun guy to watch, imo.

But apparently he's more attractive in person. I was watching an old episode of Strong Heart one day where one of the guests was talking about him. She didn't get why everyone was so attracted to him either but said she changed her mind as soon as she met him for the first time. That was a hilarious story.

Anyway, it's all in the eye of the beholder. I don't think anyone should feel odd if they don't find something in him that attracts them.

0

At first, I really am confused why soooo many people love LSG but after watching Shining Inheritance, Gumiho and 1N2D, I am too a goner...I fell in love with the guy.

It's called MAGIC! Few people have it. He has a certain charisma that people are drawn to him, not the "sexy""hot" appeal but something more on the side of adorable and cute but manyly as well. He is a guy that every father would want for their daughter kind of thing.

It helps that all his roles fit him perfectly and that he can really pull off the role without being silly silly.

Its not an ajumma thing, he comes off as someone who is REAL compared to other celebrities.

If you still can't understand it, it's alright not everyone is perfect. Peace! Hahahahahaha....

0

Beg to differ. IMO the first picture is the best. That head tilting you see has been patented for the last decade. No actor has ever patented a certain gesture/body language as theirs. But that particular pose is definitely Song Seung Hun's. His worldwide promo for headtilting.

And he's still the best looking of the three tilting or not.

yeah, you had me on all the rest: LMH is a better actor and since he generally comes across as goofy/likeable in real life, probably more charismatic than SSH who is beeyootiful but perhaps a bit..stand offish.

But on less abstastic? No. LMH has abs, somewhere. We don't ever see them. SSH, however, is a known quantity, and in this case, quantity and quality are synonymous!

Let's hear it for Towel Slip Dr. Jin!

I will be checking out both, for different reasons.

0

LOL - and I was saying that LMH's abs would be slapped into oblivion by those of SSH. :)

One acts, is cute, and can be really hot at times.

The other is competent in a role that suits his talents, (such as they are) which include being hot at all times.

I like to watch them both, so I'm good :)

0

Here you go.

SSH is like one of those smooth, dark chocolate after dinner mints. Delicious, pretty but cool.

LMH is a dark chocolate covered caramel - Delicious still, but warm, sweet, and the type you want to sink your teeth into.

JoAnne and freinds - try to keep this PG

0

I don't think I can...so I will be quiet :)

0

JoAnne...you hit it exactly. LMH is adorable, and a great actor and CAN be hot, and IS more frequently as he gets older.

SSH can't act at all, but he doesn't need to, he's just hot We need to find another venue for him so he's not messing up a drama, but we can still enjoy the scenery. Maybe a towel CF?!

0

I think someone needs to post a side-by-side of the said abs so we can compare and take a vote. But I've got no idea how to do that, lol.

0

But LMHot doesn't have any bulk. He's built for speed.

Unlike young SSH who was massive in his early 20's and has gotten more defined as he "ages."

0

Great idea YY. If one exclamation mark isn't enough to make that damn towel obey a join chorus of bunch of angry ladies might work.

0

LOL, you two!

0

Yes!! And hardly anything else matters.

Just to put things in perspective. I come from Scandinavian roots and find him totally amazing.

A friend at work told me he saw him in for real and said he was better looking in person. I appreciate everything about him and have never sensed he possessed any of the negative qualities mentioned in this post.

I'd watch him over the other two in a heart beat. I hope this time warping medical drama story has some substance to it.

You have a point that makes me think of the ratings game.

Is it that teens don't drive the tv ratings, the people who pay the bills do? That is why sageuks are so reliable.

Does that mean MtEtS crushed all its competition because it pulled in both the parents and the children?

0

Required fields are marked *

I am fascinated by all that "ratings" stuff culture, even if i hate maths. From what i know, ratings tell us that in a sample of households, TVs are tuned on channel A or B. Apparently they do polls to know the composition of the family. But do they know how many people are sitting behind the screen to actually watch each show? Cause a lonely bachelor or a team of girls, are not exactly the same...

0

I've heard in Korea it's mostly ahjummas who're in control of the TV remote whereas in Japan it's the teens! Don't know how true this actually is but when i think that schools in both these countries run later than usual esp for 12th Grade (in Korea atleast) they finish school and then go for additional tutoring (this makes me think that they would mostly watch these shows on the internet/reruns!)

Poor poor THT. I hate to say this, but his drawing power cannot compare to LMH. And this is an LMH who hasn't even earned Army abs yet.

THT can't make a bad drama watchable. I tried, really tried with EoE, and the wardrobe, make-up and hair worked really really hard at making me want to watch him, but I just couldn't get past 20.

But LMH is a whole nother class of actor, as in, he knows how to act. And he is dreamy, so so dreamy.

SSH shows up in 4, at the end.
As the show progressed, he became more and more beautiful. Seriously every shot was gorgeous, but soo not interesting.
I will gladly take all the hits in the world for this, which I wrote when I watched it.
I am almost done with Ep 19 of EoE and I am still waiting for it to be interesting. THT is so handsome and has no charisma. When he says his lines you don't see any thinking behind his eyes. It is almost as if he's just waiting for the next... person... to... say... their... lines, so he can say his. Most of the time, actually he's just waiting for the next guy to hit him with a stick. He has been hit with about 257 sticks so far, and I am prolly underestimating that!

The experience of watching this show was painful. I don't understand why it had such high ratings. Do ahjummahs like to see poor SSH get the kit shicked out of him?

LOL, kit shicked....

I never watched it. I thought about it when I was in my SSH phase (early in my Kdrama career)....I've since moved on to KJH, Lee Min Ki, YSY, LMH, Yoochun, etc etc etc

Anyway...back to the point. I may be the only person who actually lives in Steinbeck country who says this out loud....but I hated the book. And I wasn't sure if this was a version of that story, or something else entirely with a similar name, but I didn't wanna chance it.

I wish there was a discussion about "East of Eden" somewhere. The story in a word is heartbreaking. I watched the entire series because I was just starting to watch Korean Dramas and was enraptured by them.

The story is an allegory loosely based on the story of Cain and Abel. I had to spiritualize the meaning of the ending to not die of heart failure. Of course we know Abel has to die because he is/was the first martyr.

It is a beautiful revenge story. The character SSH plays is unbelievably God-like. He is a gangster, but such a good-hearted one! His actions throughout the story are totally contrary to what would be common/usual human reactions. I just feel that his character totally exemplifies WISDOM. So, I would have to say that this drama is a very important one.

0

Required fields are marked *

i have to agree with SSH Fan too, though I'm not really his fan. EoE is actually a very beautiful drama. it is my fav 70's era drama, given that i watched it without knowing any stories behind the drama production.

So I think most people who likes to criticize EoE is simply influenced by the whole 'drama' behind the production. EOE itself is actually a very beautiful drama. it is one of a kind that 'll always be remembered.

0

See, that is why I didn't enjoy this.
Cain and Abel is just way too sad for me, and I like sad.

Plus - I really cannot get past the violence in this show. I don't understand how watching these guys get pummeled over and over and over is necessary.

Why are you hurting the beautiful SSH? Why are you hurting the beautiful Vampire Prosecutor? STOP!!!

PS I didn't know anything about the drama behind the drama either. Oh yeah, LDH's character was NUTS, too, poor thing!

0

I do not like violence, either! I hated all the fights and how the evil man (Shin) tortured Lee Dong-wook not realizing he was his own flesh and blood. There is plenty of cruel irony.

Lee Dong-chul's purpose in life is to exact revenge on the man who killed his father. What happens in the end is that he gives his life for this man's only son who, also, is someone he (LDC) loved the MOST during his entire life.

Anyway, the redemptive themes are what make this story great.

I hated it when they introduce Min Hye-rin (Lee Da-hae) into the story. It is pointless and annoying. I could just taste the loathing Song Seung-heun had of her through his character Lee Dong-chul. I smile thinking about it.

When I watched "Sandglass" I noticed some parallels and similarities in the two stories: The prosecutor, the gangster, and casino owner's daughter. Falling in love with the bodyguard and him eventually dying. The time setting of the stories. I like "East of Eden" much better than "Sandglass." The ending of "Sandglass" disappoints me. It seems so amoral in many ways whereas "East of Eden" has a strong moral resolution.

0

Going to watch Lee JunKi's drama (my hubby is back kyaaah! >..,<
Because it is airing first I think LMH's drama will lose more casual drama viewers though....but his fans will definitely watch it.
Also, for TSDJ a PD and script-writer has already been chosen. The script writer is the one who wrote Time Between Dog and Wolf (a drama I loved).

Maybe Dr Jin Towel will be a bit of both? Angsty Hand Towel undergoes a radical change when he slips into the past and ends up becoming romcom Hand Towel? Or maybe it'd be the other way around? Heh - Song Seung-heon just isn't one of my favorites. I appreciated him for My Princess (until the writing tanked at the end), and I'm one of the first to say that I lurve me some Handtowel action, but there's just something about how his personality comes off - it's like he's got more than a big touch of So Ji-sub ego-centrism (word? IDK..) - I'll bet there's not a mirror made that he's ignored in passing.

Comparing SSH to LMH is like apples to oranges. Just doesn't compute. I can see SSH being afraid to go up against opposing time slots - LMH would crush him, and justifiably so.

Lee Kim Production claimed, "The fact that "Faith" is based on time travel and a modern day doctor traveling to the past to treat patients is very much like 'Time Slip Dr. Jin'".
SBS and Kim Jong Hak Productions said, "Our scenarios have been through reviews and we had no problems".

The one thing SSH's series has over Faith is that Jin is being adapted from a great manga. Jin is by far my favorite Japanese drama (one of the few worth watching), so I'm interested in seeing how the Korean version turns out.

I was JUST going to mention that. I quite liked the japanese drama but the strength of it was definitely the acting ability of those in the Edo period roles. Jin was sympathetic without being annoying and Ryouma was comical without being a cartoon; they played them with such subtlety that I wonder how the korean version will tackle the characters...
...will it stress the comedy aspect of the situation more or be more dramatic like the japanese version was?
The most central aspect of Dr Jin was the medicine... perhaps LMH's Faith will be different from that?

thank you for mentioning this. eventho i'm thinking most (here and the kdrama audience) will miss/ignore that tiny bit detail.

LMH has a big fanbase now, so i can bet my monopoly money that Faith might get the higher ratings. altho, perhaps combining SSH's fanbase with Jaejoong's supporters might boost Dr. Jin's.

honestly, learning about Jin's adaptation, I wanted someone like a Kang Ji Hwan (who was attached to Faith before, i think) - someone in the same calibre of acting. no offense to SSH.

I'm pretty shallow so I'm gonna bet my wrist on JIN. Mathematically speaking, two abs > 1 abs. And anyway, I never enjoy LMH's acting. He's too good at it that I don't even have some moments when I laugh at some part. And yeah, I'm pretty shallow..

-Rooftop Prince
-Queen In-hyun's Man
-Dr.Jin
-Faith

..... what else ?

I'm all for SSH and Jaejoong in the same drama! I can't wait :) I've watched Jin and loved it, I hope the Korean version is similar(great acting and lots of action, please?)
Faith sounds interesting too but I'm not a fan of Lee Min-ho, so I don't care too much about that one.

I liked SSH in My Princess, though that was largely because of the chemistry he had with Kim Tae-hee.

So, I'm going to be watching LMH's drama for sure (because, uh, it's Lee Min-ho), but whether or not I watch Song Seung-heon's largely depends on his female co-star and on just how cute and/or bickery the characters' relationship is.

... it would be pretty funny if the next bit of news was that Faith's timeslot had been moved up to early June. *g*

"I liked SSH in My Princess, though that was largely because of the chemistry he had with Kim Tae-hee. "

Exactly! He was so very endearing in that role.

Also, It's not as if we dramawatchers cant multitask. After all, I balanced The Musical and What's Up quite well, not to mention the multitude of similar k-dramas that are out every "season".
Personally, I dont see why I have to choose.

Oh, you don't have to choose at all - for me, I think the issue is: do I really want to watch two dramas about a doctor who travels back in time, one right after the other?

Possibly not. So, my solution is to pick Lee Min-ho's drama as my definite, as Song Seung-heon's as my 'maybe'. :)

See, I like variations on a theme. I like to watch all versions of a movie, I especially LOVE to discover that a movie I enjoy is based on some other movie I had no idea it was connected to...I love seeing the infinite variety in how to present the same story.

I will knit the same thing in different colors with slight variations in style for the same reason, just as (when I used to) draw the same scene in different media or times of day.

For me, having multiple shows with the same basic premise gives me food for thought so I'm always happy about that!

I agree.
I will watch any official version of Pride and Predudice, and most romcoms are based off the theme Jane came up with.

What about Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet being the basis for any of the "I can't be with you because my father killed your father" K-dramas?

It's all good.
Time travel is my favorite set up for any story. I have read just about every novel I could with that.

The fact that the settings start to resemble each other makes it more fun to compare and contrast, too.

0

Jomo...in that case, I guess you are probably a fan of Ten Things I Hate About You?

can't describe how much I love that movie...

0

If I love the source material (Pride & Prejudice, for example) or a specific concept or trope, I'll watch any and every version I can lay my hands on.

However, if it's simply a variation on a theme I'm not particularly enamoured of, my interest does tend to wane.

(P.S. 10 Things I Hate About You is awesome! and you know, for a brief time in high school, I was actually convinced I'd one day marry Heath Ledger. ahhh, youth.)

0

@ JoAnne,

While I think the movie "10 things I hate about you" is cute. I'm a bigger fan of the school they went to. The kid graduated from there. And yes, it does really look like a castle. In fact that's the schools nickname. :)

0

Trixi, that was a REAL school? I figured it was CG, LOL. But it's not really called Padua High, right?

Man, I love that movie...Heath Ledger singing on the bleachers...

I miss him. So sad.

0

For all the Pride and Prejudice lovers out there, I am SO with you - I think I've seen 3 or 4 versions, plus Bride and Prejudice, the Bollywood version - not to mention an almost annual read of the book - as well as Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Northhanger Abbey, Persuasion, all the rest! Huge Jane Austen fan here.

Has anyone read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? How about Sense and Sensibility and Seas Monsters?

0

That was the first thing I saw him in so that probably explains why I don't think he's an ass...I always think he's in on the joke - 'yeah, I know I'm not a great actor, but I'm trying...and hey, in the meantime, aren't I PRETTY?' If that's really his attitude, I find it very endearing. But I'm probably projecting.

I'm still very skeptical about the korean version of Jin. The japanese original was excellent and they had a leading actor who is a very good actor. Not denying that Osawa Takao isn't handsome but he is a very good actor as well. Plus the supporting cast especially scene stealing Sakamoto Ryoma(Uchino Masaki) and gorgeus Nakatani Miki.
SSH is gorgeus to look at but is he a good actor, okay at best.

let's not forget Ayase. I thought she was endearing as Saki.

the one thing i'm betting the Kdrama will up is the romance. kdramas are typically better at handling the romance department. yet, not very good at maintaining the balance between drama, comedy, romance, and action. the jdorama on the other hand can simply incorporate everything.

Ayase was adorable in this part, she can be a hit or miss in her roles but she had that girlishness that was needed to play Saki.
I liked how the feelings slowly grew between Saki and Jin, it wasn't instant love (though Saki fell for him first)
Now I'm wondering who will play Saki and will they add the Nokaze character (who wasn't a character in the manga)

The scriptwriter for “Dr Jin”, Han JiHoon, has written several hit movies and dramas including “Taeguki”, “Boy’s Don’t Cry” (t/n: also known as Once Upon a Time in Seoul), and “Time Between Dog and Wolf”.

Anyway, glad that the dramas are not gonna be shown at the same time. They each have advantages & disadvantages. Faith maybe has the trifecta, but I don't like the lead actress and not sure about the story; TSDJ has SSH (to me he's not an advantage ;) ) & Jaejoong, and was adapted from a popular manga, but as with most Korean adaptations they don't really turn out as well as the originals (so hope they got a genius writer and director).

Having seen the original "Jin" (which was very entertaining, btw), I think that lots of "writing" might not be required, so much as a few general localization edits. Much of the historical hierarchies and sentiments of the era will be substantially similar to the Japanese version. However, unless they're going to adapt seasons 1 and 2 of "Jin," they'll need to flesh it out a bit -- and, without a question, boost the romance quotient!

LMH has a huge fan base in China. Recently, his meetup was cancelled because 5,000 persons turned up, and they couldn't handle the massive crowds. I don't think SSH is as popular.
Maybe SSH and JJ will do a hand towel duo in Dr.Jin?
Faith has a big budget but it doesn't make a hit as it was the case in Korean Peninsula.
So far, LMH has chosen his roles wisely, and he will look HOT on Traditional Korean gear. His acting is much better than SSH 's which can be hit or miss.
It 's going to be interesting to find out which will have the higher ratings. My guess it will be Faith because Dr Jin was done successfully in Japan which I've seen already. Season 2 was so so.
I just love time travel movies and dramas, so I will absolutely watch the trio of gorgeous men.

Strange that some of the commentors here compared a natural looking SSH to LMH who had gone under a knife before.

I gave up watching Korean dramas until MP. Since SSH was the only actor who could draw me back to watching Korean dramas, I'll watch any of his drama (only if he is in it).

Bought the DVD on EOE and really like him even more. I don't think he's as bad an actor as what some had said here. SSH's eyes expression during acting cannot be compared to LMH at all. Maybe commentors need to look at his eyes expression rather than his abs. SSH's soulful eyes remind me of the famous HK actor, Tony Leung who is also known for his soulful eyes expression.

Not many actors have such soulful eyes!
